There are as many different writing styles as there are writers. Some meticulously develop their characters, while the plot sneaks stealthily up on you. Other writers prefer to put the plot first and let the characters develop along with the storyline.

There is no doubt in my mind that Paul Mark Tag belongs to the second group. He wastes not one word on character development, preferring to launch into the plot at a speed approaching Mach 1. Now don't get me wrong, this is not a bad thing, it is just a writing style.

Prophecy has at its very heart a very interesting precept. The ability to foresee the future, some call it, a gift, some call it a curse.

Set in the very near future (2009) Prophecy goes to work. An old safe is found on a construction site, it also happens to be the site of the great Johnstown flood of 1889. The town was destroyed, and its 2,200 inhabitants met a watery grave when a sportsman's dam gave way. The only thing inside of this rusty old safe is a sealed bottle containing a letter. The letter was purportedly written by one of the Johnstown victims, Ms. Augusta Schmidt. The disturbing aspect is that the letter was written prior to the flood, the day before to be exact, and it details her choice to stay and die with her family, rather than run for safety.

Since the late 1940's the super powers, and some of the not quite super powers have expanded huge sums of money chasing the goal of ESP. He who owns the view of the future, owns the future, is the argument used.

Paul Mark Tag introduces us to a new explanation for the phenomenon, ESP is in the human genome. It is a rare naturally occurring mutation in the DNA. So rare, it may occur only once in every 200 million people. Prophecy is based on a plot line where both American and Russian scientists have discovered the gene mutation, and the ensuing battle between the interested parties to conquer the gene.

Our heroes are Navy scientists Dr. Victor Mark Silverstein and his assistant Linda Kipling, neither of which are DNA experts, but rather meteorologists. They become the central focal point of the various groups when it seems like they hold the key to this strange 'prophecy gene.' Rogue CIA operatives, a senator with Middle Eastern connections, and the very shady organization known as The Blade Of Sinai all become obsessed with owning the Prophecy Gene.

While the plot line sometimes lacks credibility, and the characters are ever so slightly over the top, don't be put off. This book was designed to be a wild ride on the wings of escapism, and it certainly delivers. This is just the sort of novel to lose yourself in these dreary winter days.

You can get your copy from Amazon. Paul Mark Tag also has a web site with information about Prophecy and his first novel Category 5. Until he retired in 2001 to write fiction full-time, his work revolved around meteorology and his career with the Naval Research Laboratory. <bio>Simon Barrett is an adult educator in Calgary, Alberta.
Having a home flood is never a fun experience, especially if the flood damage is extensive. A flood in the basement or first level of your home can be devastating to your life -- it can cause cracks in the foundation of your home, cause mold to form, and ruin all of your possessions. Water damage restoration is also never a fun experience. Water damage is often very difficult to repair or restore, and can often lead to expensive remodeling or even razing of buildings, depending on the level of damage.

If you have had a home flood, you know that wetness and dampness will be everywhere. Even once all of the water has been removed from your home, the interior humidity levels can spike and mold and even viruses can grow. Almost every item in your home will need to be replaced that came into contact with the water or that was near the flooded area -- things such as food, furniture, carpet, curtains, books, and more.

Water removal and water damage restoration is essential following the days immediately following the home flood. Because the moisture caused by the flood can cause significant health problems, timing is of the essence. All moisture and humidity must be eradicated from the home in order for any water damage restoration to be successful.

The first step in successful water damage restoration after a flood in the home is to get a dehumidifier and a couple of fans. As mentioned, it is imperative that all moisture be removed from the vicinity since bacteria, mold, and other hazards can brew in such an environment. Once the area has been completely dried out and dehumidified, the cleaning must begin. Remember, a flood damages everything and everywhere in the home, so everything must be cleaned. No exceptions.

If the water damage is extensive, you may want to call in the likes of a professional water damage restoration specialist. He or she will be much better equipped to deal with the clean-up and restoration processes within your home. Professionals usually work quickly and efficiently to reduce the likeliness of serious issues caused by the flood. These trained individuals have the proper tools, equipment, and techniques to efficiently prepare your home for water damage restoration.

When a flood happens in your home, do not delay in calling a professional water damage specialist in. Waiting can only increase your chances of developing an illness caused by mold, bacteria, or viruses in the standing water, or worse -- the flood could have damaged the foundation of your home. When a flood happens in your home, never delay any water damage restoration attempts as it will only lead to more severe problems later.

Also if your water damage is extensive enough, you will definitely want to report it to your insurance company. Doing so can help you get the coverage you pay for and recoup your losses. It can also help you deal with the cost of repair and water damage restoration so that you can hire a professional.<bio>This article about Water Damage Restoration was written by Abe S.
Everyone in Natomas will soon be required to buy Flood Insurance.

In the post Katrina era we all have a much better understanding of how devastating a major flood can be to both individuals and a community. When Katrina hit, the levees in place to protect the city failed and what resulted was one of the worst disasters in American history. Unfortunately, most people are not well informed about the dangers of floods and what they can do to protect themselves from financial devastation in the event of a flood. In fact when most people think about floods, they only consider catastrophic disasters like Katrina and they forget that even an inch of water can cause several thousand dollars of damage to both structures and personal property.

In recent years since Hurricane Katrina, the Federal Government has been the focus of substantial pressure and scrutiny about the way the disaster in New Orleans was handled. Some serious questions have arisen about the strength of the levies protecting the city and why the majority of residents did not have flood insurance given that they were living in a basin with a great potential for flooding. As a result of these experiences the US Federal Government has become much more aware of the devastation that flooding can cause and the importance of preparing and educating communities that could be the victims of a flood.

On Tuesday, January 15, 2008 the Federal Government took a serious step forward in their fight to educate and prepare our community for the possibility of a serious flood. A study conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers indicated that the levies surrounding Natomas, CA did not meet the minimum requirements and therefore FEMA announced Tuesday that it would place Natomas in a flood hazard zone. This new zone will go into effect in December of 2008 and it will halt all new construction in the area as well as make it required that all properties with a federally backed loan must now carry a flood insurance policy.

Beginning in December of 2008, Property owners in Natomas will be required to purchase a Natomas flood insurance policy at a cost of approximately $1390 per year. The good news is that residents have been given warning about this new requirement and there are still ways to get Natomas flood insurance and be compliant without paying huge $1000+ premiums. We did some research and if we purchase our policies before the December deadline then we would still be able to purchase a Preferred Risk Policy for only $317. There are also other benefits of purchasing a policy before the December deadline. If residents purchase a Preferred Risk Policy before the deadline they will not only save over $1,000 in their first year, but they will also be grandfathered in at a lower rate of $769 when their policy renews and they will be allowed to keep that rate for as long as they keep the policy active.

Everyone in Natomas will soon be required to buy Flood Insurance. <bio>Matthew Byers is author of http://www.Natomas-Flood-Insurance.com and an Account Executive for Stonecrest Insurances. </bio>

Given the recent hurricane and flooding disasters in the country, homeowners, real estate lenders, and insurers are giving flood insurance a lot of attention. There are some basic questions you should ask, and facts you should know about flood insurance, before making any real estate purchase. A great resource for any related questions is the government sponsored flood insurance website at <a href="http://www.floodsmart.gov" >http://www.floodsmart.gov .

First off- if you have a federally backed mortgage, you are required to have flood insurance in high-risk areas. Also, lenders may require flood insurance on real estate properties in high-risk areas. If it's not required, but the responsible thing to do in your area, here are the basics.

What Do You Get From Real Estate Flood Insurance?

Basic homeowner's insurance won't cover flood damage for real estate structural loss, furnaces, water heaters, air conditioning units, carpeting and flooring. Flood insurance does that. You can purchase additional flood insurance for furniture and personal items. The coverage is fairly inexpensive- visit the government website for an estimate based on your real estate holdings.

Don't think you're at risk? The NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program) reported that a third of the payments it made last year were to real estate properties in "low-risk" communities. In the course of a 30-year mortgage, your home has a 26% chance of being damaged by a flood (according to NFIP statistics). Your fire risk is only 9%. Having NFIP approved flood insurance guarantees your claim is backed by the government. Knowing that, what questions should you ask before making a real estate purchase?

Questions to Ask Before Buying Real Estate

In addition to the government sponsored website, your real estate agent and your insurance agent should be able to answer some basic questions regarding your chosen property.

=95What is the property's flood risk? =95Does the area participate in the NFIP? =95Is flood insurance required on this property by the lender? =95Is the property near a dam, or levee? =95Does the current real estate owner have flood insurance?

You may also want to ask your insurance agent about a Community Rating System (CRS) discount on your real estate property. Find out exactly what the policy covers, and what additional coverage is available. Finally, ask about premiums for higher deductibles, and associated fees and expenses.

Congressional Issues Affecting Flood Insurance

In June the National Association of Realtors (NAR) testified before the House Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity to support H.R 1682, the Flood Insurance Reform and Modernization Act of 2007. Vince Malta, vice-chair of the NAR's Public Policy Coordinating Committee said, "To maintain the vitality of residential and commercial real estate, certain safeguards must be made available such as the federally backed flood insurance through the NFIP."

Reforms to the NFIP are expected to be ongoing as the real estate community, insurers, and government agents come to a consensus on the best ways to protect real estate investors and homeowners. <bio>John Harris is a researcher and writer on real estate topics such as economics, credit improvement tips, home selling advice and home buying preparations.
Many people are unaware or apathetic to the risk of a flood in their area. Flood damaged homes and businesses can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars if proper protection is not taken. Most people living in highly risk areas for flooding will inevitably purchase flood insurance. But what kind?

It is often hard to know what kind of a policy you should invest in. Many home and business owners are unaware of what the typical cost for such coverage is and what the benefits of the coverage can be. To find the right insurance for you, it is important to understanding a little bit about what flood coverage is, what kinds of policies exist, and, most importantly, what coverage fits for your particular flood risk.

What is Flood Insurance?

There are three basic types of flood insurance:

Dwelling

"Dwelling" insurance usually covers residential buildings that contain no more than four families, residential condominium units, manufactured homes, and the storage contents of the insured building's tenants.

General Property

"General property" policies tend to cover larger residential buildings like those that house more than four family units as well as certain commercial buildings, such as churches, schools, and small businesses.

Preferred Risk

"Preferred risk" policies are generally offered at a lower cost to residential and commercial building owners with a low to moderate flood risk levels.

Why Get Flood Insurance?

Many people don't feel the need to protect themselves with flood insurance because of their location or the construction of their home. What these people don't understand is that even a few inches of standing or moving water can cost thousands of dollars in infrastructure and restoration work. Flood insurance not only helps cover the financial burden of flood damage but many providers can help you find other disaster relief services, such as document restoration specialists.

Questions For Your Agent

Like any major purchase, it is important to understand what you will get and what the complete costs are up front. Take the time to ask your agent questions so that it is clear how your coverage will work.

Here are questions you should make sure you know the answers to when discussing policies with your insurance provider:

• Do I live in a flood zone? If so, how will my location affect the cost and benefits of my policy?
• What will be covered by my new flood policy and what won't be covered?
• How much is the cost of the policy fee and premium, and are there hidden expenses or fees I need to know about?
• Do I need coverage for my building only, its contents only, or both?

Filing a Flood Damage Claim

Contact your insurance agent or company as soon as you realize that you have flood damage. Make sure you have the name of your insurance company and your policy number in an easily-accessible place. This will help speed up the filing process. You insurance provider will then schedule a visit with a claims adjuster and advise you on how they will proceed with your claim.

After you've contacted your agent you will need to make a list of all damaged or lost valuables. Separate your damaged goods from the undamaged ones and, with the help of your adjuster, start itemizing and calculating the value of the destroyed property.

Purchasing the right flood insurance doesn't need to be an overwhelming experience.
America's northeastern areas, such as Connecticut, have been known to take some hard hits as far as storms go, so when you begin your search for a Connecticut home owner insurance quote, you must make sure your home owner insurance policy covers specific factors that could arise due to storm damage. After you dig through the damage to find your Connecticut home owner insurance policy is no time to find out what your policy does, and does not, cover.

=95 Storms and floods sometimes go hand-in-hand. In general, a Connecticut home owner insurance quote will not include flood coverage. If you are interested in flood coverage, make sure to make your interest clear when you are getting your Connecticut home owner insurance quote. If the company does not have a home owner insurance policy that offers any kind of flood coverage, contact the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) at 816-783-8003 for a flood insurance quote.

=95 Connecticut home owner insurance companies are not ignorant to the damages caused by storms; therefore, they are going to want to know what precautions you have taken to protect your home and your valuables. Making updates and repairs such as new, sturdier windows and storing your expensive valuables such as family heirloom jewelry in a safety deposit box somewhere safe will help you get a better Connecticut home owner insurance quote than not taking any precautions at all.

=95 If it's important for your home owner insurance policy to reimburse you for living expenses while you wait for your home to be repaired, make sure to ask the agent about this coverage. If you have family or friends living in a safe location, neglecting this coverage may be a way for you to save money on your Connecticut home owner insurance quote.

There are more factors to consider regarding your Connecticut home owner insurance quote, but these storm-specific matters will help get you started. <bio>http://www.ezquoteguide.com/home/ http://www.ezquoteguide.com/health/ http://www.ezquoteguide.com/car/ </bio>

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors warns that if you can't get insurance for your house, you're in big trouble. Mortgage lenders won't lend on houses that are uninsurable and as a result its value could fall by up to 80%.

It's a high flood risk that's most likely to make your house uninsurable. According to a recent survey, 6.5 million homes are already at risk from flooding of which 1.5 million are in high risk areas. The government has completed flood defences in many such areas and protection for a further 80,000 homes is due this year. But concerns have also been expressed about a further 120,000 new homes planned for the Thames Gateway which are potentially in a high "at risk" zone. Yet many areas remain vulnerable. And if global warming continues, by 2030, the 1.5 million at risk could mushroom 3.5 million. Back in 2003 the Association of British Insurers (ABI) agreed the principles which committed UK insurers to offering home and contents insurance for properties in areas which are assessed to be at a flooding risk once in seventy five years or more. The rider was that the flood defences had to be already in place or would be completed by the end of 2007.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has the responsibility of developing and maintaining these flood defences but within the insurance industry there's widespread concern that insufficient progress is being made. As a result the insurers have has warned the government that there could be widespread withdrawal of insurance cover if progress is stepped up.

In the mean time, those in areas threatened by flood water could find their insurance premiums soaring. Whilst the insurance industry agreed to provide insurance cover, their commitment was simply to maintain premiums at "reasonable" levels. But there was no definition of what "reasonable" means. As a result premium increases of 60% have been common with up 400% increases in bad areas. In a tiny number of cases, cover has been withdrawn altogether, mostly in country areas where DEFRA considers the cost of defending a cluster of a few homes to be uneconomic.

Environmentalists warn that unless DEFRA gets it's skates on, the UK 's current bill for flood damage could rise from £950 million a year, to £3.2 billion. After all, the average insurance claim for household flood damage is £30,000 -- that's even higher than fire damage. And localised events like the 2004 flood at Boscastle, Cornwall , can cost the insurers over £15 million.

If you are in any doubt whether your home or proposed home, is in a flood risk area, you should visit www.environment-agency.gov.uk. This is DEFRA's web site where you can check whether they think your home is at risk of flooding. Their maps were originally designed for planning purposes and provide information on a post-code basis.

Whilst many insurers use the DEFRA information, others like More Than, have their own flood maps. These assess homes individually rather than post code areas. This means that if your existing insurer increases your premium for flood risk and uses the DEFRA information, you may still be able to get a cheaper rate from an insurer using it's own flood data if its data identifies that your property is beyond the "at risk" zone.

The ABI has recently added to the pressure on DEFRA to accelerate the building and upgrading of flood defences. It has warned that unless the government increases its spending on flood defences, the insurance industry may not continue their commitment to the 2003 principles.

That would be bad news for many homeowners. <bio>Brokers Online are one of the leading authorities on UK finance including providing the opportunity to request quotes for Life Insurance ( http://www.life-assurance-bureau.co.uk ), Life Assurance ( http://www.life-assurance-bureau.co.uk/life-insurance/ )and home insurance ( http://www.life-assurance-bureau.co.uk/home-and-contents/ ) </bio>

In an article by Leonard Brand and James Florence, titled Stratigraphic Distribution of Vertebrate Fossil Footprints Compared with Body Fossils (Footnote 1), the authors do a fascinating study of fossil footprint sites, and correlate them with the distribution of actual fossils. Fossil footprints are not true fossils, and are more correctly identified by the term "trace fossil." True fossils are the actual remains of the animal.

In their comparison, they show that the quantity of bird and mammal fossils correlate with the number of trace fossils. In other words, where you see a large quantity of fossils in the rock record, you have a corresponding number of trace fossil footprints. However, when comparing reptile, amphibian, and dinosaur trace fossils, they do not correspond to the number of actual fossils in the rock record.

They equate this to the fact that during the first part of the flood (the Triassic sediments) the dinosaurs were more active, and during the later part of the flood (upper Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments) there were very few live amphibians or reptiles to produce footprints, except for the large dinosaurs. (This is contrasted with the young earth creationist book, Grand Canyon: Monument to Catastrophe, in which all the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous sediments are all "late flood.")

Rebuttal

There are several problems with this theory. As any paleontologist knows, fossils are a hit and miss scenario. We consider ourselves lucky when we find a dinosaur fossil. However, we have found many mass dinosaur graves in the Jurassic and Cretaceous, which skews the data. Conditions were right for the mass burial of these bones by fluvial, river systems (not ocean systems, or global Flood related). We may yet discover unknown trackways, or great abundances of Triassic fossils which makes the correlation closer. We are lucky to have found the trackways that we have, and I'm certain there are many more we can't see because they are covered by other rock layers.

Second, and more importantly, if the Flood model is to be believed, ALL the dinosaurs had to be killed during the first 40 days of the flood. At day 40, when the rain stopped, the water was at its deepest. Why then do we have footprint trackways in multiple rock strata, on top of each other? By the time the second, higher layer was deposited, all the dinosaurs should have been dead...then who was making these tracks? It is evident from Stratigraphy, that you can't lay down all the rock layers in the world during the 370+ days of Noah's Flood. In many instances, you have fossil trackways, in a lacustrine system, covered by other sediments, then another trackway in a later lacustrine system. This would require fluctuating sea levels during the flood, but during the flood, the waters rose for 40 days, then they receded for 330 days...no fluctuation.

Third, the authors propose the Triassic sediments were deposited during the early flood. Look at the leading Flood model proposed by the Institute for Creation Research, in their book Grand Canyon: Monument to Catastrophe. They claim the rocks of the Grand Canyon were deposited early in the Flood, and the rocks above this point, which show up north of the Canyon, were deposited during the receding of the floodwaters (Figure 4.1 of the book). These "receding" rock layers included the Triassic layers. Genesis 7:24 states the waters were at their maximum for 150 days. All the rocks which contain dinosaur fossils and footprints were deposited in this receding phase of the Flood, more than 150 days after the Flood started. Genesis 7:21-23 states that all living flesh died during the first 150-day prevailing period of the flood. How then are dinosaurs making footprints, during the receding phase of the flood! God SAID in Genesis 7:21-23 that they were dead! The fact that we even have footprints is conclusive proof that the Flood did not create all these rock layers.

Finally, the authors left out a key piece of information, that being the paleoenvironment. Were the environments of the time conducive to making footprints? You would have to consider this in order for their study to be conclusive.

Conclusion

The authors conclude "that the footprint data make a very natural fit with a global flood model." Actually, the global flood model fails to adequately explain the existence of trackways in late-flood sediments. I admit that this is dependent upon which "flood model" you believe in.

FOOTNOTES:

1 Stratigraphic Distribution of Vertebrate Fossil Footprints Compared with Body Fossils (www.grisda.org/origins/09067.htm) <bio>This article comes from the Answers In Creation website (http://www.answersincreation.org).
Insurance is often undervalued, frequently because people have a narrow mind when it comes to the insurance business as a whole. However, insurance helps to give security to business dealings. Here is a look at how insurance can give your business security.

Insurance is a swap:

All types of insurance do one thing -- they exchange a small, certain payment for a large, uncertain loss. Basically, this means that you pay a small fee and fixed intervals (your premium), and the insurance company will take the risk should any losses ever occur.

Take, for instance, a flood. Floods are often destroying business property and inventory, but it is impossible to know when one will, if ever occur. If you were able to tell when a flood would occur, you wouldn't need homeowner insurance (http://cheap-insurance-rates.com/home/denver.cfm). But because you can't, taking out a flood insurance policy can help you to replace the things that you lose when there is a flood.

Group statistics can be calculated:

While you cannot tell what your chances of a flood, fire, or other disaster will be, your business group as a whole has set statistics. For instance, if you own a bakery, your risk of having a fire destroy your business is higher than the risk of a fire taking down an office building. Knowing that, you could decide that as a bakery owner, your risk of having a fire is higher, and you therefore need more insurance. If you are an office owner, you could decide that your risks are lower and that you need less insurance. Every business and every individual needs certainty, and insurance can help to provide certainty in an uncertain world.

All insurances are similar:

Fire insurance is not terribly different from flood insurance, and flood insurance is not any different than life insurance. To a certain extent, all insurances are the same. If you work with life insurance, then you know that approximately 3.8% of people die before they are 25. This means that another 96.2% don't, but you have no way of knowing which of the two groups you will be in. All you can do is calculate your personal risk. The higher your risk, the higher your premium will be.

This is true of all types of insurance, including home owner's insurance. Property owners never know how good their title is. A merchant doesn't know how much he will lose on a given debtor. However, when you look at a large enough group, you can get an idea of what your individual risk is. Everything you do in business has a certain risk to it. On your own, you cannot determine what the risk is, but as a member of a business group, you know what the statistics are for that group.

What insurance does for your business:

Business has risk. There is the risk of losing property, losing life or health of employees, or losing money, among others. What insurance does is give you some guarantee against these losses. By knowing what your risk factor is, and insuring it appropriately, you will know that you have what you need sure an incident ever occur.<bio>Sarah Martin is a freelance marketing writer based out of San Diego, CA.
With record amounts of rain in many parts of the nation this year, the topic of flood insurance has gained a lot of attention. Flooding occurred in areas where it hadn't before, or at least not in decades. Not every homeowner has flood insurance and the worst time to realize that you should have it is after your condo, townhome or single family house has sustained water damage. Flooding can not only destroy your material possessions but also do major structural damage that could cost thousands of dollars to repair. So even if you think there is little chance of flooding where you live, the cost of an insurance premium is cheaper than replacing home furnishings or repair costs.

Chicago real estate can be susceptible to flooding from several different ways. Even if you live in a new construction condo such as those listed here http://www.bestchicagocondos.com/new-construction-condos/index.html, you could possibly experience flooding. Excavation nearby might change the normal drainage of the area and cause rain water to run off into your property. Nearby construction could cause surface flooding during storms or from heavy snow melt in spring. The unexpected main water line could burst and leak into your unit. And in older structures you may discover that your building's roof is poor construction or in need of repair or that the basement storage area leaks after a heavy rain. Your condo association fees may already cover flooding, but you should carefully check to be sure.

Your basic home insurance policy does not cover flood related damage. Individual companies and policies will vary of course, so you need to read yours thoroughly. Many condo and home insurance policies will state that water damage is covered only if wind or fire damage occurs first to let the water in. There are insurance companies who may go to great lengths to try and prove that water damage you sustain isn't covered. That's why it's important to have a separate policy so there won't be any doubt as to your coverage.

Statistics from the Federal Emergency Management Agency state that 25% of all flood damage and claims occur in areas of the country classified as low to moderate risk. It's possible that your mortgage holder or bank won't require you to have flood insurance unless you are in a high risk area. But you can purchase flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program. That policy will cover the cost of rebuilding your condo or home and replacing the contents that were damaged or lost.

The federally backed insurance will usually only max out at the policy limit and not account for increased construction costs due to inflation or any other unforeseen expense. The FEMA insurance will allow up to $250,000 for the structure and another $100,000 for the contents. If you think you will need more, you'll have to buy additional coverage from a private insurance company. Your rates will largely depend upon the level of flood risk in your area. Actual coverage generally won't start until 30 days after you purchase the policy, so waiting until a flood warning is issued will be too late. Even if you rent you are still eligible for content coverage. And unlike car or health insurance, the quote you get for flood insurance for your specific condo or home and location should be the same no matter from whom you purchase it.

So unless you live in the desert or on a house boat, you may want to seriously consider checking into flood insurance for your condo, town home, single family residence and the contents. Don't let your life, dreams and bank account get washed away. Flood insurance may be the life jacket you need to survive.<bio>Paula Cherrist writes articles about Chicago real estate, home trends and housing related topics for About Chicago Real Estate.</bio>

Floods have become one most of the most destructive natural disasters for around two years now. It has destroyed homes and eroded precious land in several parts of the world. The destruction caused is often so enormous that it takes years to repair the damages, and the mental trauma encountered is colossal. Those who have lost their homes during these floods would appreciate a few helpful pointers that could aid them in bearing up with the consequences of such floods.

Monetary aid-

1. Firstly, something as basic as insurance can go a long way in helping you bear up with the repercussions of flood damages. Contact your insurance company and verify whether the policy you have opted for covers the damages you have suffered. Investing in flood insurance would be a sensible decision during such times because homeowner's insurance policies do not extend their coverage to flood related losses.

2. Secondly, other voluntary service groups extend help to all those victims of flood-zones who have incurred huge losses. You can contact agencies such as local church groups, Red Cross, and civic clubs. During national declared disasters caused by floods, telephone hotlines distributing such information are made available.

Measures for safety after the flood-

The first impulse of those who have been forced to evacuate their homes during the floods is to enter their houses after the flood has subsided. However, you should venture inside only when the local officials have declared it as a safe residence. Exercise precaution and avoid entering if the water still stands inside your home.

1. Check whether the power lines inside your house are intact or not. Report to the local officials if you find any hazardous broken lines that have been lying under the water level. Turn off all such utilities before getting a thorough inspection and restoration done by professionals. Check your waterlines and sewage provisions systematically, because the water if infected can be a health hazard.

2. Next, inspect whether there has been a gas leak or not. Avoid switching on any electric appliance inside your house when you enter it because there is a risk of a fire in such cases. Use flashlights that use batteries for power generation while subjecting your house to a careful scrutiny.

3. Another feature that must be checked is the foundations of your house. Inspect the walls, staircases, and floors. Get a professional to repair such structural damages.

4. If your car batteries or other such tanks containing hazardous chemicals are leaking, make sure you take proper professional help to eliminate such risks.

Cleaning up after the flood-

Disinfecting your home after the flood should be on your priority list. You can procure a disinfectant or cleaning solution from the store or use your own homemade remedies like mixing 1/2 cup of chlorine with a gallon of water to clean the walls, floor, and every surface that had been drowned by water. Open all windows to ensure that the rooms are well ventilated. Sunlight too helps in killing germs.

Prevention is better than cure-

There is always a risk of your home being flooded once over again. Make sure you take measures like storing food for emergencies, chalking new plans for immediate evacuation, and getting flood insurance done. If the flooding was due to pipe leakages, make sure you have proper water alarms and detectors installed in such vulnerable areas of your residence.<bio>Derek Rogers is a freelance writer who represents a number of UK businesses.
The days immediately following a flood are the most crucial to the potential for recovering any personal property that may be damaged by the floodwaters. Hurried recovery tactics, however, can lead to further damage of your property and potential harm to yourself and your loved ones. To recover from a flood safely and affectively:

1. Determine the type of flood experienced

2. Assess the damage that has occurred

3. Determine the safest way to salvage belongings

Determine The Type of Flood Experienced

Floods vary by origin and damage. Floods can develop slowly and take days to reach their final peak. Flash floods, on the other hand, come about within a matter of minutes from seemingly nowhere, typically caused by a surge in rainfall in dry areas. Floods that occur near a defined lake or river are called overland floods and are often weather related. Levee and dam breaks can also create flooded areas.

Stagnant floodwaters can be contaminated by oils, fuels or sewage. If the flood is accompanied by a hurricane, earthquake or severe storm, downed power lines can also electrically charge the water making it entirely unsafe. Also, be wary of any wild animals in post-flood areas. Experts recommend residents avoid all areas with remaining floodwater until it recedes and never enter moving floodwater as it can very easily cause a loss of footing.

Dry areas may also be potentially dangerous after a flood, depending on the severity. Floodwaters can erode roads and walkways, making them dangerous to traverse. Buildings can also be damaged.

Assess the Damage That Has Occurred

Never immediately enter your home or office after a flood - the floors and stairs may have sustained damage and may no longer be safe. Instead, walk a safe distance around your home's foundation and check for loose or downed power lines, gas leaks, structural damage, and any other potentially dangers. Call a qualified building inspector or structural engineer if you suspect your building has sustained any dangerous flood damage.

Once it has been determined that entering your home or office building is safe, the next step is to assess the damage sustained to your valuables and personal belongings. Not all damage means utter ruin. Water damaged photos, books or documents may not necessarily need to be thrown out. Proper document recovery techniques and document restoration companies can help you stem the loss of your most beloved belongings. Seek out a professional to help you determine if any of your essential materials can be saved, even if you believe them to be beyond repair. Quick response and attention to important pieces may make the difference in its potential for restoration.

Determine The Safest Way To Salvage Belongings

A dedicated document restoration service will be able to help you determine the best system for saving your belongings. Many believe that the best technique for recovering your water-damaged personal effects is the desiccant air dry distribution system. Not all companies offer this recovery service. The desiccant air dry technique is an energy-efficient and safe way of removing moisture from the air surrounding your belongings, allowing the water that is trapped inside them to evaporate quickly and harmlessly.

When looking for a restoration specialists make sure the system they use completely dries the materials. Mold damage can occur long after a flood if valuables are not completely dry before they are returned.

Simple steps taken in the first few days after a flood can make a big difference in the long-term detriment the waters cause a family, home or office.<bio>Recovering from a flood water disaster is overwhelming and tedious.
The Flood of Noah is one of the centerpiece arguments for young-earth theology. Because of this, I have been asked what I believe the Flood of Noah was like.

To answer this question, let us first look at what the Flood is not...it is not the event that has been described by the young-earth theorists. There is no possible way the Flood could produce the rock record we see, nor could the flood produce all the coal layers, oil reserves, or chalk layers that we see in the rocks. If you want to explore these topics first, click on them to examine them in closer detail.

Was the Flood Global?

This is probably the biggest question I get asked. This will be a short answer to such a big question, but...no.

You may ask how I can believe in an inerrant Bible if I don't believe the Flood was global. The Bible says the waters covered the entire face of the earth (Gen. 7:19). However, when considering any writing, one must take into account the author's point of view.

What is the author of Genesis's point of view? He is writing the story from the viewpoint of the witnesses, or, mankind. At the time of the Flood, mankind was still limited to the Middle East. Therefore, if you wipe out mankind, which all existed in one geographic area, you could easily say the Flood was global, since everywhere that man lived, it was flooded. Does that mean that North America was flooded? Think of it this way. You are in your house, and a flood comes and covers your entire house, leaving you sitting on your rooftop, with no land in sight. This flood event may not be global, or, over the entire surface of the earth, but to you, it is definitely 'global', for your entire world, all the land that you own, all the land that you can see, is flooded.

Or, think of it from Noah's viewpoint. All the flood stories from around the globe originated from Noah, since all mankind is descended from him. If you are Noah, on the Ark, floating around with no land in sight for months on end, you too would certainly call the Flood global. Therefore from his viewpoint, global would be the correct word, even though there is no proof that the Flood actually covered the entire earth.

If the Flood was global, there is no proof that it covered the entire earth, either geologically or from writings, including the Bible. It was certainly 'global' from Noah's viewpoint, but we can't be certain that he completely circled the globe to prove that it was indeed global.

Food Supply

In Genesis 8:11, the dove that Noah sent out brought back an olive leaf as proof of dry land. Let's look a little closer at this from a young-earth perspective.

In order to prove the Flood, and the necessary erosion that took place in order to deposit all the rock layers we see today, two young-earth theorists, Baumgardner and Barnette, worked out a simulation of the current patterns and speeds if the entire globe was covered in water.(Footnote 1) The important thing to note here is that the water currents were at least 131 feet per second, or more than 89 miles per hour! (Actual speeds varied between 89 MPH and 194 MPH). At that velocity, all previously existing trees would have been torn from their roots, and there would be no living trees or plants to survive the flood. So, where did the olive leaf come from? It would have to be a leaf from a seedling which the dove brought back, because none of the pre-existing trees would have survived.

Since none of these trees could have survived, there would have been no plant food for any of the animals (or Noah) to eat. How did the plant-eating animals survive after they were released from the Ark? The young-earth model cannot answer this.

How did the meat-eating animals survive? They would naturally have to immediately feed on the plant-eaters, which would have made them extinct within a matter of weeks. The young-earth global flood model again fails to answer this.

However, if the Flood were local, not global, then the animals would merely have to migrate a short distance to find food. Clearly, the local flood model is the only one which can logically explain survival of animal species after the Flood of Noah.

Wildlife Ranges

What about the other continents...where they flooded? Was Australia flooded? If so, how did the wildlife there, such as Koalas and Kangaroos, get to Australia from the Ark? Did they swim across the sea? Of course not. If they migrated from Noah's Ark, you would expect Koala and Kangaroo populations to exist all along this migratory route...but they are only located in Australia. A young-earth flood model cannot explain the wildlife habitat ranges that we see today in Australia, nor the other continents.

Dinosaurs

Young earth theorists are quick to use dinosaur graveyards as evidence of Noah's Flood. They claim the dinosaurs herded together, and then were quickly buried. However, this explanation is not feasible.

The dinosaur graveyards referred to are mostly in North America, in sediments in Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and Canada. However, looking at the positioning of the rock layers, there are thousands of feet of sediment below these layers that the young-earth theorists claim were deposited by the Flood.

To make this more understandable, let's look at the Grand Canyon. Steven Austin, in his book Grand Canyon: Monument to Catastrophe, claims the Canyon rocks represent those which were deposited during the rising waters phase of the Flood (Figure 4.1). The "Late Flood", or receding water rock deposits, are the Mesozoic sediments.

It is interesting to note that all the dinosaur fossils, including the mass graves, are Mesozoic in age. This means that all the dinosaurs died in the receding water phase of the flood. However, it is clear from Genesis 7:21-23, that all life was killed during the first 40 days of the Flood. Some young-earth theorists will argue that the bodies floated around, and eventually sank, based on various factors as body size, density, and so forth. However, this cannot be true, because the dinosaur footprints all exist in the same Mesozoic rock layers, as do all the dinosaur coprolites (fossilized dinosaur poop), and fossilized dinosaur eggs. Clearly, the dinosaurs were alive and well, after the declaration in Genesis 7:21-23 that all living things were killed during the first forty days of the flood. Clearly, the young earth flood model cannot explain the dinosaur fossil distribution in the rock record. However, if one accepts a local flood event, with the dinosaurs having lived over 65 million years ago, there are no problems.

Conclusion

The young-earth flood model falls flat on its face when compared to the rock record. There is no global, geological evidence for a flood, nor can the young-earth model explain animal survival when there was no food supply, animal distribution ranges, nor dinosaurs which survived the first forty days of the flood.

The old-earth explanation can handle all these problems. You can believe in an old earth, and still believe in Noah's Flood. It was not "global" over the entire earth, but it certainly was "global" if you were in Noah's shoes.

FOOTNOTE:

1 Baumgardner and Barnette (icr.org/index.php?module=researchandaction=indexandpage=researchp_jb_patternsofcirculation) <bio>Greg Neyman is the founder of the website ministry Answers In Creation, located at http://www.answersincreation.org..
It is well known that Egyptian history is closely aligned with Hebrew history. Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and Moses interacted to a significant degree in the history of Egypt. King Solomon was attacked by Shishak of Egypt; Josiah was killed by Pharaoh Necho. Isaiah predicted that the fortune of Egypt would depend on its relationship with Israel in the latter days. Therefore is it possible to adjust the Egyptian Chronology using the Fourth Day Chronology we have developed so far?

Consider Noah's flood. If there is an event that can leave its mark on a culture like no other it would be a global event like the flood of Noah. Fortunately there have been scientists that consider the global flood a reality and they have searched for and found evidence for it. However the same approach has not been taken by historians. They have not looked for evidence that the global flood affected the ancient cultures. If the global flood did occur could this be reflected in the history of Egypt?

Imagine the beginning of the world as the descendants of Adam and Eve begin to procreate and fill the globe. Families had to protect themselves from animals, weather and other people. Tribes, groups of families, began to form as the population grew. Tribes offered more safety than individual families. However, tribes would often fight against one another and the mightiest of the tribes would "absorb" other tribes until these "mega" tribes would form nations. So if a global flood occurred, a period of induction from the end of the flood until populations rebounded to their pre-flood levels would occur. Evidence of this would be small tribes skirmishing until they absorbed other tribes until they became large tribes. Large tribes would then battle for dominance so that they could form nations. David Rohl provides evidence of such a situation (page 14, Pharoahs and Kings). Rohl states that after the Old Kingdom's glory is followed by the first low in the history of ancient Egypt, the First Intermediate Period (the 7th through the 12th dynasties). Rohl than proposes the following scenario to explain the fracturing of the Egyptian kingdom. The fall of the great pyramid age appears to coincide with severe changes in the climate of the region. Droughts that were the results of a series of major earthquakes led to the collapse of major city-states in Canaan and the inhabitants of Canaan invade Egypt. These invaders are responsible for the fragmentation of Egypt into petty kingdoms just as was the situation prior to Egypt's unification under the first pharaoh of Egypt, Menes.

I have a different explanation for the fragmentation of Egypt into petty kingdoms. I don't believe the Egypt had been fragmented but rather the presence of these petty kingdoms indicated that Egypt's population was growing after the global flood. This can be seen be looking at Egypt's history in the first few dynasties. I believe Menes was the first king of Egypt ever. I believe Menes is one of the "mighty men of reknown", one of the first kings of the earth (Genesis 6:4) : "And there were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, the men of reknown." I believe Menes was a great warrior that was able to defeat all the tribes around him and assembly the nation of Egypt for the very first time. I believe the sudden demise of the Old Kingdom, the great pyramid age, was caused by the global flood. The droughts (caused by a change of climate due to major earthquakes) were symptoms that the earth was about to go through a dramatic change.

The global flood then occurs in the beginning of the first intermediate period and the presence of the petty kingdoms in the first intermediate period is the evidence that mankind is trying to re-establish its former population after the flood. Therefore the First Intermediate Period should not be dated 2152 B.C., but according to the Fourth Day Chronology the beginning of the First Intermediate Period should be 2313 B.C., the year of the global flood, or about 161 years earlier. If the Egyptian Chronology is shifted back 161 years the dating of Menes' reign would be corrected to the year 3081 B.C. which would be between the dates of the birth for Lamech (3095 B.C.) and Noah (2913 B.C.) according to the Fourth Day: Why the Bible is Historically Accurate chronology. This dating for Menes would make his presence consistent with the biblical appearance of the "men of renown". <bio>My name is Darren Thompson and I am a chemical engineer that has worked in the rocket propulsion industry for over 15 years.
Did you know that according to the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDI), the insurance industry is one of Indiana's largest employers. That being said, that means there are many insurance options for homeowners in Indiana. Because the insurance industry is so large, there must be tough regulation to ensure the protection of the consumer.

Here are some facts Indiana homeowners should be aware of when securing homeowners insurance:

If your homeowners policy is being cancelled for non payment of premium, the notice of cancellation must be in writing and sent to you at least 10 days before policy cancellation.

If your insurance company does not want to renew your policy, IDI requires the notice be sent to you at least 20 days before policy expiration. As a consumer, negotiate with your insurance company to extend the 20 days to 30 or 60 day notice. If your policy is being cancelled for a reason other than non payment, you'll need the extra time to shop around for replacement coverage.

If your policy does not cover flood damage, it must be stated prominently on the policy jacket or, you must be given written notice that flood coverage may be available through the National Flood Insurance Program.

In certain Indiana counties in southwestern Indiana along the Illinois Coal Basin, the insurance company must inform you of the availability of mine subsidence coverage (coverage for homes built over mines that may collapse or slowly settle) when they issue the policy.

IDI also regulates how much an insurance company can charge you for an inadvertent bad check. Their charge may not exceed $20 (this is in addition to the charge issued by the banking institution).

Please see our list of references below to find the lowest rate insurance quotes on the web. Along with low rate quotes this is a good source of insurance information. <bio>http://www.ezquoteguide.com/car/ http://www.ezquoteguide.com/home/ http://www.ezquoteguide.com/health/ </bio>

Flooded Vehicle - is considered, a vehicle that was damaged by water level raised to seating level. Most flood damaged cars, trucks and SUVs are sent to a salvage yard, but some are cleaned up and put into the auto market where they'll be bought by unsuspecting buyers who think they're getting a great deal.

Flooded water leaves long lasting damage. Electrical and mechanical components will probably fail early. Mold and mildew can also create a serious problem. Any remaining warranty is voided. While buying a used car be on the lookout for these cars even if you don't live in a flooded area, because dishonest people move them around. Here are some tips and points to detect flooded vehicles.

I) Get a Vehicle History Report Enter the vehicle's VIN number to get a history report. Carfax does a great job of researching a vehicle's background, but a clean slate is not a 100% guarantee that the car or truck hasn't suffered water damage. You can also contact CarSnaps and ask them for advice or request a vehicle background report.

II) Look for Moisture. Look for moisture within the lights. Check the glove compartment, console and trunk and inspect them for any sign of dampness moisture or the dirt that looks like a leftover from a flood. Look under the hood for accumulated dirt or signs of rust. Check under the seats for signs of moisture.

III) Take a deep Sniff This can really help in detecting flooded vehicles. Do you smell a sour, mildewy-like odor? Soaked seats, carpeting and other components are difficult to dry in a hurry, so there's plenty of time for mold and mildew to grow, especially if the flood occurred in a hot and humid location.

IV) Look for Mismatched Interior Components Does the carpeting look brand new or mismatched or too new for the vehicle? Do seat covers seem out of place with the carpeting? Components that don't match-up might have been changed in a hurry after the vehicle was pulled from flood waters.

V) Request free advice from CarSnaps Contact CarSnaps.com and request free advice from their qualified technicians who are there to help and it is free so there is nothing to lose.

VI) Let Your Technician Examine the Vehicle Take the vehicle to a technician if possible and ask for a thorough examination. Experienced auto technicians see evidence of flood damage more often than most individuals do, so they know exactly what to look for.

VII) Turn it On and Go for a Drive Turn the car on and check every electrical system possible, including the exterior and interior lights, the gauges, the clock and the audio system and the dash lights that display air bag and seat belt information. Go for a drive and test electrical components again to make sure they work correctly. 90% of the time you will be able to suspect an electrical problem with flooded vehicle unless it is repaired or electrical parts are not damaged which is very rare though.

Flooded vehicles should be avoided as much as possible even if seller tell you about the manufacturer warranty because warranty voids when a car goes through a flood. If you suspect a flooded vehicle walk away from it. Flooded vehicles are not worth the hassle they provide. <bio>Jareeullah is a 19 year old certified automotive enthusiast.
Although it is in your best interest to purchase a used car as opposed to saddling yourself with the huge monthly payment and insurance rates inherent in buying a new car, there are certain things one must consider when taking the plunge. You have to consider what has happened to the car during its lifetime with its previous owner =96 or owners, as the case may be. You probably already know that you should beware of a damaged axle in the case of a collision, for instance. What you may not be accustomed to thinking about, however, is the possibility that the car may have been in a flood.

If you are wondering what the big deal is about floods and cars meeting up, just consider what it would be like for 10 feet of water to make its way into your house. For one thing, your upholstery is going to be ruined. Because it is very difficult to get all the water out of something like a couch (or the front seat of a car), the upholstery may suffer from long-term moisture, which will lead to mold. In the case of cloth upholstery especially, soaking may damage the shape or the overall quality of the materials. Dye may even run.

Think about how being drowned will affect your electronics. These may or may not be able to dry out completely, a situation that can lead to nasty shorts in the system. There is no reason to believe that drowned electronics will ever work properly again. You can see where this is going =96 your car is a one-ton mass of electronics.

One of the easiest ways to tell whether a car has been in a flood is by climbing in and taking a good sniff for the scent of mildew. In addition, floods often cause car liquids like gasoline and oil to make their way to the fabrics as well, and those smells will likely be present. If it is apparent that someone has gone to great lengths to disguise the car's smell, such as applying too much air freshener or New Car Smell, then that is cause for suspicion.

Another sign that a car has gone for a dip is dirt and moisture trapped inside the lights. This is very easy to check for, but it is also easy to overlook unless you make a special point to check. Other telltale places to check are inside the glove box and in the trunk, not to mention beneath the hood.

One very clever thing that you can do is check to see if the automobile components match. If an automobile has been given the emergency room treatment and had its components =96 stereo, seats, carpet, et cetera =96 changed very quickly, then that is a sign that it could have suffered flood damage.

Of course, you can never be completely certain a seller is being completely legitimate about the car's history with you, but being armed with even a little bit of knowledge really decreases the likelihood that you will make costly mistakes. <bio>Find the best deal on the auto insurance coverage you need.
If you have financed the purchase of your home with a mortgage, your lender will most likely require you to get Buildings Insurance to protect their investment. If your home is paid for, it may still reward you to have Buildings Insurance as it gives protection against the costs incurred should your property be damaged.

Having a Buildings Insurance policy would pay for the rebuilding of your property should it be destroyed by or sustain damage by, an insured event. Either the rebuilding cost can be unlimited or up to a specified sum, this detail is agreed when you purchase your policy.

The policy will cover the structure of your home, the roof and walls, plus any permanent fixtures within, such as a kitchen or bathroom. It generally gives protection against fire, flood, theft and subsidence plus other events, which need to be checked and agreed upon before you buy the policy. If your property is located within a flood zone, the insurance company may not agree to provide flood cover. This could a consideration when you are looking at properties to buy, if the property is in a flood risk area, the insurance companies may give flood cover but at a price that may prove too prohibitive.

If your property is in an area that is prone to subsidence or if it has a history of subsidence, it may prove difficult to obtain building insurance. Should your home have a history of subsidence, then a recognized professional should perform any underpinning and a guarantee obtained. Proof of the work being done satisfactorily will assist in acquiring cover.

Savings can be made when buying Buildings Insurance by simply checking the marketplace for the best price. Some insurers will offer a discount if you also buy Contents Insurance when you buy Buildings Insurance with them. Additional discounts can be obtained if you have other policies with the same insurance company, for example, Motorcar Insurance.

Generally, it is considered that new buildings are built to a higher standard and are more cost effective to run, than older ones. This is reflected in the cost of the premium. The placement and quality of a good warranty will affect the price and availability of Buildings Insurance on a new home.

There will be a reduction in the cost of your premiums if no claims have been made against your Buildings Insurance in the last three or more years. There are a number of things you can do to your home to reduce the risk of making a claim. Fitting high quality locks on all external doors and windows and the installation of a recognised good home security system and a smoke alarm. Insurers look upon even joining the local neighborhood watch campaign favorably.

As with all forms of insurance, a factor, which greatly influences the cost of the premium, is the amount of excess you are prepared to pay in the event of a claim. The higher the excess amount, the lower the premiums will be. This, plus many other details regarding your level of cover will need to be compared carefully. To assist with this process, it might prove useful to use a specialist broker when searching for Buildings Insurance. <bio>David Thomson is Chief Executive of BestDealInsurance (http://www.bestdealinsurance.co.uk) an independent specialist broker dedicated to providing their clients with the best deal on their home, motor and life insurance. </bio>
