The mention of "bacteria" brings to mind images of illness and uncleanness, but in fact the human body has about 500 types of bacteria living in the gastrointestinal tract alone, almost all of them beneficial.

We call them "friendly bacteria," and they have a symbiotic relationship with us. We help them by giving them a place to live and food to eat, and they help us by producing nutrients such as B vitamins, helping to metabolize drugs and hormones, and maintaining a healthy pH balance in the intestinal tract.

Friendly bacteria also protect us from infection by bad bacteria. For the most part, they do this simply by being more numerous: With good bacteria occupying most of the available space, there isn't room for bad bacteria to thrive.

But when something happens to disrupt the balance, bad bacteria can start to outnumber the friendly kind, and illness occurs. What causes this shift in bacteria population? Paradoxically, taking antibiotics can actually be one of the major causes of having too much bacteria. Most antibiotics kill all bacteria indiscriminately, including the good kind. If more good bacteria dies than bad bacteria, the bad kind will start to take over.

Birth control pills and other hormones (including steroids) can disturb the balance, too. In addition, an unhealthy diet, too much alcohol, and too much stress will nourish the unfriendly bacteria while killing the friendly bacteria.

One of the most plentiful harmful bacteria is the genus Candida (usually Candida albicans, specifically), a type of yeast that lives in the small intestine, the urinary tract and the mucous membranes. Normally, Candida's numbers are kept in check by friendly bacteria. When it is allowed to flourish, however, it causes dysbiosis -- the opposite of symbiosis, where one organism is now harming the other -- and illness.

Symptoms of Candida dysbiosis are often reminiscent of a hangover. Why? Because Candida is a yeast, and yeasts produce ethanol (or alcohol), as well as acetaldehyde -- the main chemical responsible for hangover symptoms. If there is too much Candida, too much alcohol is produced, and the person experiences the side effects of drinking without touching a drop!

Too much Candida can manifest itself in these symptoms: fatigue, headaches, aches, weakness, general "hungover" feeling, lack of concentration, diarrhea, nausea, constipation, allergies, and vaginitis, among other things.

In addition, while Candida is normally a bacteria, when it becomes strong it can change into a fungal form, with little branching "arms" that can jab into the intestinal wall. This leads to something called "Leaky Gut Syndrome," which is exactly what it sounds like: a permeable intestine that allows toxic chemicals to escape and be absorbed into the body.

One of the simplest ways to avoid all this unpleasantness is to resist taking broad-spectrum antibiotics. They may help with the immediate condition that requires treatment, but they may be more harmful in the long run. With several hundred types of bacteria in your system, most of them beneficial and necessary, it's best not to send medication in that's going to wipe them out. <bio>Jane Symms has an interest in Candida.
The full potential of probiotics has been recently discovered and the research is going on. Scientists are becoming aware of these beneficial bacteria and are devising ways and means to use them to improve the health of people everywhere.

Probiotics are dietary supplements that contain live microorganisms like bacteria or yeast. They maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the digestive tract. Since almost three-quarters of the immune system is located in the digestive tract, it is important to maintain balance or your health may suffer as a result.

The ideal balance of good bacteria and harmful bacteria should be 80% and 20% respectively. Unfortunately, this healthy balance is under constant attack by unhealthy diet, stress, illness, and exposure to toxic substances. Indeed, antibiotics change the balance significantly. Though they are taken to kill harmful bacteria, antibiotics often kill the existing beneficial bacteria as well. The result is diarrhea and other intestinal issues. Similarly, anti-bacterial soaps kill many good bacteria along with the bad bacteria.

Probiotics enhance the body's immune function by maintaining a healthy bacterial balance in the digestive tract. Probiotics also promote lactose digestion and prevent diarrhea and diarrhea-related illnesses. In addition, they maintain healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels and they reduce inflammation and improve mineral absorption. Recent studies have shown that probiotics can be used to prevent diseases like the Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, as well as certain types of cancer. For women, specific strains of microflora have been found to be very beneficial in supporting vaginal and urinary tract health, and preventing the discomfort of a yeast or urinary tract infection.

Probiotics are equally useful for infants and children; they can benefit from them immensely in the growing years. In nature's scheme of things, newborns receive their first beneficial gut bacteria during the birthing process itself. And, this process can be carried on during the early years by supplying additional good bacteria. It will support overall digestive and immune health. Since Probiotics support the intestinal lining and prohibit allergens from entering the digestive tract, they can also reduce the risk of developing allergies at a young age.

Some preliminary research has revealed that after the age of fifty or so the amount of good bacteria in the intestines declines considerably. Therefore probiotics should be taken by adults over 50 years of age. They should start supplementing their diet with probiotics to obtain the immunity-enhancing benefits of these helpful bacteria. <bio>Brandon H.
Many people suffer from the problem of flatulence, which is the act of expelling intestinal gas from the rectum. There are only two sources of gas in the gastrointestinal tract, swallowed air that enters the stomach, mostly gulped while eating or drinking, and the gas produced by bacteria present in the intestines, primarily the colon. The air that we swallow is rarely the cause of excessive flatulence. It mainly occurs due to the over-production of gas by the intestinal bacteria present in the large intestine or colon. Sometimes, flatulence is associated with some specific conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. People who suffer from irritable bowel flatulence may also experience other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and abnormal bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation.

In the digestion process, the food that is not digested in the small intestine, primarily sugars and polysaccharides (e.g. starch, cellulose), is digested by the bacteria present in the large intestine. In this process, bacteria produce different gases such as hydrogen, methane, etc. Lactose, sorbitol and fructose are the main sugars that are poorly digested.

The amount of gas produced by the bacteria varies from person to person. Some people have more bacteria in their colon, which results in more production of gas. Some people have particular bacteria that produce more gas. In some people, digestion of food in the small intestines is not complete, which can also effect the levels of gas produced.

Continue reading to discover natural methods to relieve Irritable Bowel symptoms and sign up for our free newsletter.

Conditions such as lactose intolerance, and celiac disease may also result in poor digestion. Since more undigested food reaches to the bacteria in the colon, it results in more gas. Some people suffer the spreading of gas-producing bacteria from large intestine into the small intestine. Therefore, the food reaches the bacteria before its complete digestion or absorption by the small intestine, and this increased volume of undigested foods which is available to the bacteria produces more gas also.

Excessive flatulence can also be associated with eating of particular type of food. For example, eating beans can lead to excessive flatulence.

The unused gas distends the intestine. The intestinal muscles contract and push the gas further along the intestine until the gas is finally expelled. People who have constipation as the main symptom in irritable bowel syndrome experience more flatulence and generally pass more gas than those who don't.

For those with a hypersensitive intestinal tract, like those with IBS, the build up of gas can trigger other IBS symptoms.

There are a number of options available to a person with excessive flatulence, which include the identification of the foods that seem to cause the problems, and reducing the volume eaten of these foods. They can often be reintroduced slowly at a later stage.

While evaluating the problem of excessive flatulence in a person, the physician may ask the patient to count the number of times he/she passes gas for several days.

It helps in confirming the presence of excessive flatulence since the count correlates well with the total amount (volume) of gas passed. It is normal to pass gas about 20 times a day. However, it is not always easy to measure the amount of passed gas. If an individual passes gas less than 20 times a day but complains of excessive gas, the problem might be something other than excessive gas. For example, the lack of ability to control the passing of gas or the foul odor of the gas might be the main problem.

Such problems are also socially embarrassing and may prompt individuals to consult a physician. These problems are not correlated to excessive gas production or Irritable Bowel Flatulence and have different treatments. <bio>Sign up for Susan Reynolds' free IBS newsletter - Overflowing with easy to implement methods to help you discover more about Irritable Bowel Flatulence at http://www.natural-irritable-bowel-syndrome-relief.com/?source=is </bio>

Scientists have only recently begun to discover the full potential of probiotics. But as research continues, much is being learned about these beneficial bacteria and how they may improve the health of people everywhere.

Probiotics are dietary supplements that contain live microorganisms (bacteria or yeast) that have been shown to help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the digestive tract. This is especially important because nearly three-quarters of your immune system is located in your digestive tract, so when that balance is upset, your health may suffer as a result.

Ideally, there should be a balance of approximately 80% good bacteria and 20% percent harmful bacteria in your intestines. Unfortunately, factors such as diet, stress, illness, and exposure to toxic substances can affect that healthy environment. Antibiotic use can also significantly alter the bacterial balance in your gut. Although their main purpose is to kill harmful bacteria, antibiotics often kill the existing beneficial bacteria as well. This can lead to diarrhea and other intestinal issues. Likewise, using anti-bacterial soaps has the same effect=97killing many good bacteria at the same time it kills the bad bacteria.

Because of their vital role in maintaining a healthy bacterial balance in the digestive tract, studies have shown that probiotics help enhance the body's immune function. In addition to helping prevent diarrhea and diarrhea-related illnesses, probiotics also promote lactose digestion=97no doubt welcome news for those suffering from lactose intolerance. Other potential benefits of probiotics include maintaining healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels, reducing inflammation and improving mineral absorption, and current research is also looking into how probiotics may help prevent Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, as well as certain types of cancer.
A mouth ulcer is an open wound in the mouth where tender nerve endings are exposed and can often cause extreme pain to the person who is affected with them especially when they can become irritated. Often a person suffering from mouth ulcers will find it difficult to eat, drink and sometimes even talk and unfortunately these exposed ulcers are vulnerable to infection by bacteria that is find in our mouth and unfortunately create even more pain.

Many mouth ulcers often seem to start off as a small bubble or blister which then becomes open and ulcerated and this is when the pain really starts. However, they can be caused accidentally by someone biting themselves or there lips are so dry that they crack and then the ulcers begin to form on their lips.

Normally mouth ulcers are caused by either virus, bacteria or fungus and may result in the body's own immune system attacking the mucosal lining of the mouth. In some cases people who suffer from either Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's Disease (intestinal conditions) may find themselves suffering from mouth ulcers also.

A good way of treating mouth ulcers is with coconut oil which kills the bacteria that causes them. It is also good for treating throat infections, gum disease and cavities. Certainly the Pacific Islanders who have a coconut based diet have excellent dental health and rarely suffer from mouth ulcers even when they have never brushed their teeth or used floss or anti-bacterial mouthwash.

Certainly coconut oil is ideal for helping to relieve the pain felt from mouth ulcers instantly all you need is get a tablespoon of coconut oil and hold it for a minute on the mouth ulcer. Soon you will feel the pain going away and this relief seems to last for quite a while because of the MCFA's (medium chain fatty acids) find in coconut oil which are rapidly absorbed in to the body and thus the healing process is accelerated.

The way coconut oil works is that it has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and which can help to combat viruses, bacteria and fungus that can be found in a persons mouth and will cause ulcers. The MCFA's which are in coconut oil also help to enhance the body's own immune system and thus help it to fight viruses, fungus and bacterial problems. Also coconut oil is great for helping a person's intestinal system by killing any fungi found in the intestinal tract.

Above are a number of reasons as to why coconut oil can not only help to treat and heal mouth ulcers but also to help prevent them from forming. Also coconut oil is not messy to apply to the ulcer and is completely edible and natural. <bio>Lee Dobbins writes for http://ulcers.health-g8way.com where you can learn about treating ulcers and find more mouth ulcer cures. </bio>

You may have heard the term Probiotic from friends and family but never knew what it was. In this article we will discuss good bacteria and its benefits to the body, who may need to supplement probiotics in their diet and where to find them. For those who have never heard of probiotics, this term is given to bacteria found in our intestinal tract also known as friendly bacteria.

The human gastrointestinal tract houses more than 400 different live beneficial bacteria. Among these good bacteria include L. acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum, the two most abundant friendly bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract must keep balance with bad bacteria such as E.coli or your health starts to decline. If you suspect you have a problem in your GI tract, some of the health problems you may be experiencing are poor digestion, headaches, and intestinal yeast an overgrowth of the bacteria candida albacans which can make life unpleasant.

L. Acidophilus produces acidphilin, lactic acid, and hydrogen peroxide which together produce an antimicrobial agent in the GI tract which fight against foreign environmental borne pathogens. This effect also enhances the immune system as well as boost the digestion of foods, help alleviate digestive disorders, help prevent bad breath, enhance the synthesis (production) of B vitamins, help with calcium absorption, help as an anti-tumor and anti-cancer agent, help in the digestion of dairy products like milk, and fight against excess yeast growth such as candida.

The benefits of acidophilus, bifidus, and other probiotics to maintain proper GI health have been demonstrated by the scientific community for several years now. If your digestive system is in poor health, this poor GI condition can further reduce the levels of acidophilus and supplementation is required to restore your system to proper health.

If you have ever suffered from candida, you know with out a doubt that probiotic supplementation is a must. By supplementing with a good probiotic one can stop yeast over growth, boost the immune system, and rebuild their GI bacteria. The fastest way to destroy probiotics in the intestinal tract is by taking an antibiotic. In the past few years, doctors have been over prescribing antibiotics for every little sniffle and cold, even those with a yeast infection in the GI tract. Antibiotics are great for fighting bacteria and in some cases you just can not get around taking one; but the use of an antibiotic will destroy all the probiotics in your GI tract. Research has determined that 70% of your immune system resides in your intestinal tract, by taking an antibiotic you can knock out your immune system if you do not restore it with a good probiotic supplement. In North America, environmental toxins, food toxins, and a high stress life style can reduce the probiotic population in your GI tract as well. Note: if you are currently on an antibiotic do not take your probiotic at the same time that you take your prescribed antibiotic. The antibiotic will destroy the probiotic. Allow 2 =96 3 hours between applications. If you consume your antibiotic at 12noon wait till 2pm or 3pm before taking your probiotic. This will help prevent the antibiotic from completely destroying all life in your intestinal tract.

There are several sources one can get probiotics from, by a food source or in supplement form found at your friendly health food store. Foods high in probiotic culture consist of natural cheeses, yogurt, kefir, and buttermilk. These are perhaps the best food sources for probiotics. Some other foods like wheat grass, spirulina, and chlorella are also rich in probiotics and are also packed with vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that can boost the immune system and help detoxify the body. For those of you who are allergic to the list of foods first mentioned (dairy), an alternative to those food sources is a good enteric coated probiotic from your friendly health food store in capsule form. Whether you choose to eat foods high in probiotics or visit your friendly health food store, getting a daily infusion of probiotics can improve your health and quality of life. <bio>Please visit VitaNet Health Foods at http://vitanetonline.com/ VitaNet sells high quality probiotics like Kal brand Acidophilus probiotic 4 to boost Intestional flora and overall wellness.
Trillions of microorganisms live on and inside us. Human beings, as well as animals, play host to many types and high number of microbes. Microbes live on our gastrointestinal tract. Microbes live on our skin, in our mouth, and all the way through our gastrointestinal tract. In fact, in reference to the human body, it has been estimated that there are more microbes associated with it than there are human cells in it. It has been estimated that more than 400 different species, or type of bacteria make their homes on humans. By providing large numbers of these friendly bacteria to the intestinal tract that may increase the population of these bacteria compared to other, less desirable, strains. These strains may then competitively inhabit the growth of undesirable strains by competing for space and nutrients, while also inhibiting the production of toxic substances produced by some desirable strains.

Many types of diarrhea illnesses, with many different causes disrupt intestinal function. Recently, a paper was published which reviewed nine studies on the effect of Lactobacillus therapy for diarrhea in children. This paper conclude that "Lactobacillus is safe and effective as a treatment for children with acute infectious diarrhea"

Can it replace antibiotics?

The purpose of antibiotics is to kill harmful bacteria. Unfortunately they often kill normal bacteria also. This can result in disruption of the bacteria flora, leading to the diarrhea and other intestinal disturbance. Replenishing the flora with normal bacteria during and after antibiotics therapy seems to minimize disruptive effects of antibiotics use. Studies have been recently reported suggesting a role of probiotics in decreasing symptoms in patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative coalitis, inflammatory bowel disease and pouchitis.

Probiotics helps prevent lactose intolerance.

Yogurt was found to aid digestion of lactose because the lactic acid bacteria used to make yogurt produce lactase and digest the lactose before it reaches the colon. In addition to yogurt starter bacteria, L acidophilus and Bifidobacterium have been shown by several studies to improve digestion of lactose.

It is unlikely that eating yogurt will significantly increase the number of beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract. The bacteria used to produced a fermented food like yogurt is not concentrated for the purpose of supplementing your body's probiotics level. Besides the lack of potency found in food producing bacteria, sugars and preservatives cause the bacteria to go through their life cycle before the food product even reaches your store. The strains used in natural probiotics are selected as being the most beneficial for supplementing the probiotics level in your body. These strains are not found in yogurt.

In general, everyone should supplements themselves with probiotics. Without taking probiotics supplements, most people will not have enough beneficial bacteria in their systems to deal with many digestive tract related upset. However, there are some common conditions associated with a lack of beneficial bacteria. If you have poor skin, diarrhea or constipation, slow peristalsis (how long it takes your food to be digested and eliminated), flatulence or bowel wind, bad breath, bad body odour, lactose intolerance, or a low resistance to infections on a regular basis, your body be telling that you need more beneficial bacteria. The best way is to supply your body with natural probiotics supplements.<bio>Bardnurz Sham, Write an article to educate people so that they can improve their life by eat well and have a wonderful life.
In order to get the best results for any type of Candida probiotic treatment you should lookf for probiotics containing Lactobacillus, Bifobacterium and Acidodophilus.

These are the active ingredients usually found in good probiotic supplements. These beneficial micro-organisms help to increase and repopulate the intestinal bacteria that are good for the immune and digestive systems.

The probiotics used in supplements for treating Candida also often contain B Vitamins such as Biotin, Niacin, Folic Acid and Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6), all of which help to improve a person's digestion as well as help combat vaginal yeast infections.

Successful suppression of candida overgrowth is achieved by an altering the balance of the acid/alkaline found in a person's intestines which in turn deprives the Candida bacteria of the essential nutrients which they need in order to grow and multiply.

When a person is using a probiotic supplement for combating Candida they are bolstering the number of good bacteria in their GI tract, and these good bacteria produce an anti-fungal enzyme, which can then fight the overgrowth.

However, along with probiotic supplements there are other more natural ways increasing the levels of good bacteria in the GI tract. One of these includes eating more live yoghurt.

The live yogurt that we eat is cultured using the same bacteria that live in the gut and the intestines, and helps to protect a person against the overgrowth of Candida in their bodies.

For many years women have found it to be beneficial in staving off vaginal yeast infections when applied to the skin.

So, including live yogurt into a healthy eating regime can lessen the chance of developing intestinal and vaginal yeast problems, along with Candida and digestive disorders.

The introduction of good bacteria into the GI tract has also been linked to an improvement in the immune function, as a properly working digestive system is essential to a healthy immune process. ] Read below to discover how you can sign up for the free combating candida newsletter and discover other natural ways for overcoming candida.

If you do not enjoy the taste of yoghurt, there are multiple alternatives available to you. There are Probiotic foods and drinks, and supplements, which are easy to take and can provide additional good bacteria for your body.

Finally, if you have had a course of antibiotics to treat another ailment then you will often be recommended to consume some form of probiotic supplement or food. Antibiotics are usually pretty indiscriminate and can kill off both the good and the bad bacteria in the GI tract leaving the body wide open to developing a yeast infection.

So, boosting the levels of good bacteria helps to avoid problems and a good candida probiotics treatment is a way of helping the body fortify itself against the misery of a yeast infection. <bio>Grab your free copy of Jane Symms' brand new Candida and Yeast Infection Newsletter - Overflowing with easy to implement methods to help you discover more about candida probiotics and natural candida remedies : http://www.eliminating-candida.com/index.html?source=is </bio>

Although the mention of stomach gas problems, such as belching, flatulence, bloating and "gas pains" often elicits some degree of amusement, all of us have gas in our intestinal tract and must expel it in some way.

Some individuals are very sensitive to the effects of gas collections in the stomach and intestinal tract and may develop significant discomfort.

If such complaints are troublesome and persistent and do not respond to simple measures, such as change in diet, a visit to your doctor could be helpful.

The gas brought back by belching comes entirely from swallowed air. We all swallow some air when eating food and drinking liquids. Most of the gas mixes with the stomach content and either enters into the small intestine or is belched back.

The air that enters the small intestine is either absorbed or it may continue through to the large intestine and is then passed rectally. Individuals may swallow more air (and thus increase stomach gas) if they have a post-nasal drip, chew gum, have poorly fitting dentures, suck on hard candies or smoke tobacco. Drinking carbonated beverages (soda or beer) or eating rapidly can also increase stomach gas.

The food we choose to eat can influence the amount of gas passed rectally. Although most of our food intake is absorbed in the small intestine, some foods, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, baked beans, and bran are incompletely digested.

They are then broken down by bacteria in the large intestine, causing the formation of gas. A high roughage diet is important to promote bowel regularity, but excessive roughage or fiber may lead to bloating and increased flatulence.

When increasing the amount of fiber in your diet, do so gradually, allowing your intestinal tract time to adjust.Milk sugar (lactose) requires an intestinal enzyme (lactase) for digestion. When individuals lack this enzyme the lactose in milk and other dairy products enters the large intestine where the lactose is broken down by bacteria, producing gas.

Although milk is an excellent source of protein and calcium, many adults experience abdominal bloating, gas and diarrhea after consuming milk sugar. Persons from Asia and Africa are often extremely intolerant to the smallest quantity of dairy products.

Everyone passes some rectal gas, although the volume of gas is different each day. Much of the flatus comes from the nitrogen found in the air one swallows. The remainder of the flatus volume is the result of carbohydrates which are not absorbed in the small intestine and are broken down by bacteria in the large intestine.

Therefore, the amount of flatus represents a combination of swallowed air and poorly absorbed carbohydrates. The unpleasant order of flatus is due to other gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, which is produced by the bacteria.

Individuals with a long history of occasional gaseousness and abdominal discomfort need not seek medical attention. A change in the location of abdominal pain, significant increase in the frequency or severity of symptoms, or onset of new symptoms in individuals over the age of 40 are some of the reasons to see your doctor. <bio>Learn all you wanted to know about stomach gas http://www.stomach-gas.info </bio>

Managing stress in your life is a great way to help get your negative emotions under control, but unfortunately, stress is only one of many IBS causes. In fact, research that has been conducted over the past few years has found that IBS may also be related to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).

What is SIBO? It is an overgrowth of bacteria that naturally occurs in the small intestine. The small intestine contains a small amount of bacteria that is essential to the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. However, when too much bacteria exists, problems such as fat malabsorption occur. In addition, it also stops carbohydrates from being absorbed, leaving them to rot in the intestines causing a number of unpleasant and often foul-smelling symptoms including bloating, pain, gas, mucus in stools and diarrhea.

Bacterial overgrowth can lead to nutrient deficiencies, food allergies and digestive enzymes that barely function. It is a common condition that usually goes undetected for years, even when symptoms are present. Why? Most people who have chronic digestive problems and have bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation are typically diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. Doctors rarely consider bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine as the problem.

What causes bacterial overgrowth? There are many different factors that can lead to SIBO. Some of the following conditions that could cause an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine include:

• Reduction of motility in the small intestine -- condition caused by too much dietary sugar and chronic stress. This condition can also occur from diabetes, scleroderma and hypothyroidism.

• Structural abnormalities within the small intestine -- abnormalities may be caused by small intestinal diverticula, gastric bypass surgery, and intestinal obstruction. etc.

• Hypochlorhydria -- As people age, they produce less stomach acid. Stomach acid helps to eliminate bacteria in the small intestine. Thus, if there is a decline, the acid won't be able to eliminate enough of the bacteria.

• Other causes -- stress, prolonged use of steroids, antibiotics, antacids, birth control pills and other medications, immune deficiency, pancreatic enzyme deficiency and a diet insufficient in fiber.

Are IBS and SIBO related?

One study that was conducted by researches at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in California involved 202 participants with IBS. Each participant was tested for bacterial overgrowth with a lactulose breath hydrogen test. A person with bacterial overgrowth produces high levels of methane or hydrogen gas. The lactulose hydrogen test analyses the gas in breath, and is the best test for diagnosing SIBO.

At the end of the study it was found that of the 202 participants, 157 tested positive for SIBO. When the 157 people that were diagnosed with SIBO were treated for the condition, and the extra bacteria within their intestine were eliminated, 48% of them had an improvement in their IBS symptoms.

Although it has been found that bacterial overgrowth and IBS can co-exist, researchers are still determining whether or not IBS symptoms are caused by SIBO. Some theories suggest that the high levels of methane or hydrogen gas that are caused by the overgrowth of bacteria produce IBS symptoms. However, the theories are yet to be proved.

How do you treat SIBO?

Excess bacteria are eliminated through the use of antibiotics. Unfortunately, although antibiotics can control bacteria overgrowth it isn't a cure. Like IBS, SIBO symptoms often return when medication is ceased. Thus, antibiotic treatment is often a continuous process.

If you think you may have SIBO, talk to your doctor about taking a lactulose hydrogen test. If you find that SIBO is related to your IBS causes, or even if it's not, it is a good idea to look into other alternative and complimentary forms of therapy to treat your symptoms such as acupuncture aside from medications. <bio>Want to learn more about http://www.natural-irritable-bowel-syndrome-relief.com/ibs.html?
Probiotics and their benefits are still being studied and discovered day by day by scientists around the world. One thing they are all agreeing on is that probiotics are very positive bacteria that can help your body on a path to good health.

Some of the items you eat have live microbes on them that once in your system, actually are helpful to maintaining intestinal balance. These are probiotics. They tend to make their home in the digestive tract and seem to be closely tied to the immune system.

All bodies have a lot of bacteria in them, but the average healthy body should have a range with 80% good bacteria and 20% percent bad bacteria at any given time. But, there are plenty of things that can upset that balance including changes in diet, being sick and dealing with stress. Often when someone gets sick, they take antibiotics to get rid of the problem. Unfortunately in addition to killing off the bad bacteria, antibiotics also tend to kill off the helpful bacteria in your system.

It's important to keep a good amount of these probiotics in your system. While they benefits are still being discovered they have already been linked to increased immune system function, digestion assistance, and even preventing digestive problems such as diarrhea and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. In addition there are studies into whether probiotics also aid the body in soaking in more vitamins and minerals from items ingested, and they may even help in regulating blood pressure and cholesterol levels and preventing infection in the urinary and vaginal regions.

There are probiotics additives on the market that can be taken to get those probiotic numbers back in balance. Many health care providers advise these for use for patients of all ages. For children, even infants, it is believed probiotics may be helpful in the maturation of their digestive and immune systems, even helping to lower their chance of developing several childhood allergies.

In addition those who are getting up in years may want to consider probiotic supplements. As people get over age 50, the amount of those good bacteria inside the digestive tract is believed to start declining. A good way to bring those levels back up and have a healthy balance of bacteria is by using a probiotic supplement. <bio>Brandon H.
The specialists at Rockefeller University performed a complicated medical research which has as main result, the identification of another possible cause of strep throat: a bacteriophage. The so far neglected microorganism that eats bacteria seems to cause not only strep throat but also many other conditions of bacterial nature. It is a surprising discovery, because the main role of the bacteriophages is to infect and destroy a large variety of bacteria, thus also Group A hemolytic streptococcus bacteria, the cause of strep throat.

Researchers blame the bacteriophage for some of the cases of strep throat; the results of their series of studies contradict the traditional belief that bacteriophages don't produce infections inside the human organism. What makes them responsible for conditions like strep throat seems to be the fact that they appear to transfer toxins between bacteria. This discovery is very important, because it gives the answer to the question why some of the patients that test positive for Group A hemolytic streptococcus bacteria lack the symptoms of strep throat and other develop both the disease and one of its complications.

Bacteriophages are viral microorganisms that seem to alter the normal benign function of a large variety of bacteria as it is the case with E -- coli that was proved to have a malign function that causes ulcer, although its normal role is to protect the intestinal flora from the external invasions. The study of bacteriophages may help in the identification of a treatment for diseases caused by altered bacterial functions.

Researchers consider strep throat to be generated by a lysogenic conversion, a process in which a bacteriophage carries a toxin to Group A hemolytic streptococcus bacteria, transforming thus what was supposed to be a harmless microorganism into a dangerous one that generates various conditions. A component factor of the saliva, SPIF, makes the lysogenic conversion easier and quicker because it produces the mobilization of the bacteriophages.

On mice, any bacterium appears to be able to convert non-toxicogen and non-infectious agents in toxicogenic infectious agents in presence of a bacteriophage that carries a toxin in its structure. The conversion is made through the very contact. The studies reached the conclusion that the bacteriophage should be controlled too in order to treat diseases generated by lysogenic conversion whose previous treatment only focused on bacteria such as Group A hemolytic streptococcus bacteria in strep throat. <bio>For more information visit http://www.strepthroatinfection.com </bio>

The answer is yes, the northwestern Larch tree can boost the immune system. The fiber that has this amazing immune boosting property is found in the wood of the larch tree and its called arabinogalactan (AG). Researchers recently discovered that AG can boost the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, these cells kill off microbes and cancer cells as soon as it detected in the body. In laboratory tests, AG has shown to prevent cancer cells from spreading to the liver and organs prone to secondary tumor development. Researchers speculate that AG will become part of a supplement list shown to fight cancer in the near future.

A study done by the University of Minnesota and Southwest College discovered that AG boosts white blood cell count in health individuals and combined with Echinacea, AG increased the chemical properdin in the blood which helps the immune system fight foreign substances.

AG is also known as a prebiotic which feeds friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract and help bring balance to your colon. Friendly bacteria or flora is important to help fight bacteria and microbes that enter the body through the intestinal tract and also help in the digestion and absorption of the foods we eat.

AG is a fiber and can help get things moving in the colon, in America the average fiber consumption is 15 grams per day, this is 50% less than the recommended 30 grams of fiber needed for optimal colon health. Some don't even get 15 grams a day these individuals may suffer from chronic constipation from lack of fiber. Consuming the proper amounts of fiber each day helps with regularity and can help reduce cholesterol levels.

So to sum it up arabinogalactan (AG) helps support a healthy digestive tract by increasing regularity, by feeding friendly flora and can boost (stimulate) production of natural killer (NK) cells a primary immune system defense against cancer and bacteria.

The statements in this article are not intended to diagnose, treat and cure or prevent disease please consult your health care physician before discontinuing medication or introducing herbs into your diet. <bio>Visit VitaNet® Health Foods at http://vitanetonline.com/.
No drugs should be taken to control diarrhoea as it has been found that anti-diarrhoeal drugs and binding mixture may temporarily relieve the symptoms, but do not really help to cure the disease. Rather they hamper the bowel's protective function to rid the body of its harmful contents.

In severe cases of diarrhoea, it is advisable to observe a complete fast for two days to provide rest for the gastro-intestinal tract. Hot water only may be taken during the period to compensate for the loss of fluids. Juices of fruits may be taken after the acute symptoms are over. After condition improves, meals can be enlarged gradually to include cooked vegetables, whole rice, soured milks. Raw foods should be taken only after the patient completely recovers.

An effective remedy for diarrhoea is the use of buttermilk. It is the residual milk left after the fat has been removed from yoghurt by churning. It helps overcome harmful intestinal flora and re-establish the benign or friendly flora. The acid in the buttermilk also fights germs and bacteria. It may be mixed with a pinch of salt three or four times a day for controlling diarrhoea.

Carrot soup is another effective home remedy for diarrhoea. It supplies water to combat dehydration, replenishes sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sulphur and magnesium, supplies pectin and coats the intestine to allay inflammation. It checks the growth of harmful intestinal bacteria and prevents vomitting. Half a kg. of carrot may be cooked in 150 ml. of water until it is soft. The pulp should be strained and boiled water added to make a litre. Three-quarter tablespoon of salt may be mixed. This soup should be given in small amounts to the patient every half an hour.

The pomegranate has proved beneficial in the treatment of diarrhoea because of its astringent properties. If the patient develops weakness due to profuse and continous purging, he should be given repeatedly about 50 ml. of pomegranate juice to drink. This will control the diarrhoea.

Turmeric has proved another effective home remedy for diarrhoea. It is a very useful intestinal antiseptic. It is also a gastric stimulant and a tonic. Turmeric rhizome, its juice or dry powder are all very helpful in curing chronic diarrhoea. In the form of dry powder, it ma y be taken in buttermilk or plain water.

In case of diarrhoea caused by indigestion, dry or fresh ginger is very useful. A piece of dry ginger is powdered along with a crystal of rock salt. A quarter teaspoon of this powder should be taken with a small piece of jaggery. It will bring quick relief as ginger, being carminative, aids digestion by stimulating the gastro-intestinal tract.

Starchy liquids such as arrowroot water, barley water, rice grual and coconut water are beneficial in the treatment of diarrhoea. They not only replace the fluid lost but also bind the stools. Other home remedies include bananas and garlic. Bananas contain pectin and encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria. Garlic is a powerful, effective and harmless antibiotic. It aids digestion and routs parasites. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com , http://www.myanxietyguide.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

Have you ever thought about what goes into your body each and every day? If not, you should. One of the key ways to ensure that you feel good and are healthy is by eating nutritious food and making sure your GI tract has the tools it needs to digest and absorb nutrients as best possible. The GI tract, which includes the stomach and intestines, works to digest food and eliminate waste. A variety of "good" intestinal bacteria, called probiotic bacteria, can help to keep the digestive system running by helping to digest food, process waste, and keep the "bad" bacteria in check.

Although some kinds of bacteria do cause illness and diseases in humans, the majority of bacteria do not cause disease. There are actually types of bacteria that are beneficial. Probiotic bacteria are used in the manufacturing of food and beverages and can be found in buttermilk, yogurt, cheese, sausage, and acidophilus milk. The same probiotics can be found in our intestines, where they help to keep the digestive system running by digesting food and processing waste. Probiotics are live bacteria that are non-toxic and do not cause disease. Some of the best known probiotic bacteria include members of the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium groups. These probiotic bacteria are also known as lactic acid bacteria because they have the ability to break down lactose. Both of these types of probiotic bacteria are well studied and are available in both food and dietary supplements. The bacteria that are found in yogurt, our intestine, and most natural supplements are the same types of probiotic bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria longum. Because of this, these bacteria are referred in a generic sense as probiotics or "good" bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria can be found naturally in milk. The probiotic bacteria used in food and natural supplements are harvested through a highly controlled fermentation process which results in high numbers of quality bacteria.

Normal microflora (intestinal bacteria) is associated with good health, while an imbalance if frequently associated with various disease states including yeast infections and colon cancer. Eating foods or taking a nutritional supplement that contains probiotic bacteria can help support and modify the large intestine microflora, which assist digestion by making the intestines more inhospitable to invading bacteria species, protection against disease-causing bacteria, and stimulation of the immune system.

Lactose, which is an important sugar that is converted to lactic acid by lactic acid bacteria, can lead to lactose intolerance when the body is unable to digest lactose which results because of genetics, gastrointestinal disease, or a decline in the amount of intestinal lactase levels. Those who are deficient in lactase accumulate non-absorbed lactose in the GI tract, which draws water and electrolytes into the gut and speeds water through the intestines, causing bloating, cramping, and diarrhea. About 50 million people in the United States have some form of lactose in tolerance.

Digestive enzymes, which consist of protease, amylase, and lipase, act upon food by breaking it down into similar components that are used by the body for energy. Without these enzymes, digest could not take place and the food we eat could not be absorbed and utilized by our bodies. Probiotics help the enzymes in our bodies digest food and process waste, ensuring that the digestive tract is running smoothly. When taken with enzymes, the enzymes ensure greater levels of digestion and absorption of food while the probiotic bacteria aid the enzymes in digestion and keep problems in check.

Helping to ensure a healthy digestive system is not the only use for probiotics, as Lactoabcillus acidophilus has been found to help prevent vaginal yeast infections in women that suffer from these reoccurring infections. Probiotic bacteria have also been demonstrated to have anti-cancer properties. In one study, colon cancer patients given Lactobacillus acidophilus showed a significant increase in numbers of intestinal Lactobacilli and a decrease in risk factors associated with colon cancer. Patients suffering from inflammatory bowel diseases can also benefit from probiotic bacteria supplements. Probiotics supplementation can also improve and prevent skin diseases such as eczema. Scientific research has shown that probiotic bacteria can actually control inflammation associate with skin conditions.

Since probiotic bacteria do not permanently stay in the body, they need to be replenished through the consumption of foods which contain probiotic bacteria or taking a natural probiotic supplement daily. If you choose to take a probiotic nutritional supplement, the critical factor is how many bacteria reach the intestines healthy. A quality supplement should deliver at least 1 billion living probiotic bacteria per dose to your intestine and be mixture of both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria. A good quality probiotic nutritional supplement will have guaranteed levels of live bacteria at when it is consumed. Other, lesser, brands will just merely state levels of live bacteria at the point of manufacture. Look for a product that has a use by, or expiration date that is clearly stated on the package. It's also important to find a supplement that does not require refrigeration because one can never be sure whether the supplement was refrigerated during shipment and storage to the retail store. A scientifically validated process (True Delivery Technology) assures that live bacteria are delivered to the intestine by suspending the probiotic bacteria in a moist paste and sealing the bacteria in a seamless spherical gelatin ball protected from air and dryness.

Since lactic acid bacteria aren't very resistant to stomach acid, the harsh environment destroys the majority of the bacteria. This new coating process protects the bacteria from the stomach acid, as the sphere is specially developed to dissolve in the intestines. Although this specialized process is expensive, it has many advantages to you. The gelatin spheres "seal" the bacteria in the capsule, protecting them from air, which can injure or kill probiotic bacteria and eliminating the supplement's need to be refrigerated. By protecting the bacteria on the shelf and in the stomach, the probiotic bacteria are able to successfully reach the intestine. This means that, there will be a greater number of healthy bacteria that can arrive in the intestine.
Bowel habit is a topic we seldom pick up even in our close circle, but we all secretly admit the value of a problem-free bowel habit and its multiple effects in our lives. We all know how frustrating it feels like starting the day with a nagging constipation and just on contemplating the effects of the attack of diarrhea, chills run down through our blood. Now while the symptoms like constipation, diarrhea, poor skin, trouble in losing weight, all result from the wickedness of a clogged colon, a healthy colon not only relieves you directly from these complaints, it ensures you an overall health. You can try different methods to get a healthy colon, but according to the experts the method that brings in most dramatic result is the Oxygen Colon Cleanser.

An oxygen colon cleanser is typically an oral solution for colon cleansing which takes the forms like Capsules and powder rich in oxygen-based chemicals. It is a way of cleansing your colon by releasing revitalizing oxygen to the systems of the body. Bad food habits lead to covering up of the colon walls with indigested wastes and an oxidation reduction reaction help to melt away those compacted matters. Specialized ozonated elements used in Oxygen colon cleansers break the solid toxic mass into a liquid or gas form and as a result it cleanse the entire intestinal tract and supply essential oxygen along the way. The best quality oxygen colon cleansers affect the whole system and work for other aspects of constipation treatments.

Now the question is why should we opt for oxygen colon cleanser when so many other options are available? The answer lies in its unique ability to help in the growth of helpful bacteria that ease our digestion process. But as for the other methods, they do away with these helpful bacteria in their efforts of eliminating impacted wastes harmful bacteria.

As opposed to other methods, oxygen therapy is also able to cleanse and detoxify the entire colon by eliminating all the old, impacted fecal matters. It clears the entire intestinal tract, and initiates a normal bowel processes.

It is often recommended that you should use oxygen-based cleansers along with colon hydrotherapy. It not only cleanses, also refreshes the entire intestinal tract. These cleansers have the ability of traveling to the kidneys and bladder. In the process the urinary tract gets purified as well.

You need not get panicked if you get watery, gaseous stools as a result of taking oxygen colon cleansers; it is not diarrhea. It is simply the result of oxidation or the process of turning a solid into a liquid or gas. If you want to see the best result, take at least gallon water per day to keep your system hydrated. <bio>Kaye Trout writes on various health subjects.
Have you ever thought about what is going into your body each day? If not, then you should. One of the main ways to feel and be healthier is eating nutritious food and making sure your GI (gastrointestinal) tract has the right tools to digest and absorb nutrients. The GI tract, which includes the stomach and intestines, works to digest food and eliminate waste. A variety of "good" bacteria, called probiotic bacteria, can help to keep the digestive running as well as digest food, process waste, and keep take care of "bad" bacteria which causes disease and illness.

Although some kinds of bacteria do cause illness and disease in humans such as strep throat, the majority of bacteria do not cause disease. Instead, they are actually beneficial and are used in the manufacturing of food and beverages like buttermilk, yogurt, cheese, sausage, and acidophilus milk. These same kinds of "good" bacteria can also be found in our intestines, where they help keep the digestive system running by digesting food and processing waste. Probiotics, or live bacteria that is non-toxic and does not cause disease, are found in yogurt, intestines, and most natural supplements.

Up until the middle of the last century, bacteria found in food ingredients naturally were used to make fermented food products such as cheese. This process was known as wild fermentation. However, this process is no longer used, as the probiotic bacteria found in food and natural supplements now are harvested through a highly controlled fermentation process resulting in high numbers of bacteria and ensuring quality and purity of the bacteria.

Probiotic bacteria are very important for digestive health. Normal microflora (intestinal bacteria) is associated with good health, as an imbalance in this natural microflora is linked to various disease states including yeast infections and cancer. By eating foods or taking a nutritional supplement containing probiotic bacteria, one can help support and modify the composition of the intestinal bacteria. These bacteria will offer protection against disease-causing bacteria, and stimulation of the immune system.

Lactose is an important sugar that is converted to lactic acid by lactic acid bacteria. Lactose intolerance results when there is an inability to digest lactose because of a failure of the small intestine mucosal cells to produce lactase, which is an enzyme needed in order to digest lactose. This is often caused by genetics, gastrointestinal disease, or a decline in the amount of intestinal lactase levels associated with aging. People who are deficient in lactase accumulate non-absorbed lactose in the GI tract, drawing water and electrolytes into the gut and speeding waste through the intestines which leads to bloating, cramping, and diarrhea. About 50 million people in the U.S. have partial or complete lactose intolerance. Lactic acid bacteria have been shown to help the breakdown of lactose by enhancing the activity of lactase and improving lactose digestion and tolerance.

Digestive enzymes including protease, amylase, and lipase act upon food by breaking it down into simpler components that can be used by the body for energy. Without these enzymes, digestion could not take place and the food that we eat could not be absorbed and utilized by our bodies. Probiotics help the digestive enzymes to digest food and process waste, working together to ensure that the digestive tract is running smoothly.

When they are taken together, enzymes ensure greater levels of digestion and absorption of your food while probiotic bacteria aid the enzymes in the digestion while keeping problems in check.

However, ensuring a healthy digestive system is not the only use for probiotics. Probiotic bacteria have been found to prevent vaginal yeast infections in women that suffer from these reoccurring infections. Probiotics keep levels of Candida, a fungus component of the normal GI microflora, in check, preventing overgrowth which is associated with vaginal infections, oral thrush, or even serious systemic yeast infections. Probiotic bacteria have also been shown to have anti-cancer properties and significant benefits for inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Along with the above, probiotic supplementation can improve and prevent skin diseases such has eczema and actually control inflammation that is associated with skin conditions.

In order to ensure optimal support of the digestive system, probiotics should be replenished by consumption of foods containing probiotic bacteria or by taking a probiotic natural supplement, as probiotic bacteria do not permanently colonize in the body. Whatever form you choose to replenish the intestinal probiotics, they should be ingested daily to ensure their health-promoting effects. The critical factor to a good supplement is not how many bacteria that supplements contains, but how many bacteria reach the intestines healthy, vigorous, and ready to work. A good supplement will deliver at least 1 billion living, healthy probiotic bacteria to your intestines with each dose. The critical key to a good quality supplement is, once again, that the bacteria are alive and can colonize in the intestines. A good quality product will have guaranteed levels of live bacteria at the point of consumption rather than at the point of manufacture. To ensure that the bacteria are live at the point of consumption, look for a product that has a "use by" or "expiration" date clearly stated on the package. It is also important to look for a probiotic supplement that does not require refrigeration, as those that do have often been subjected to warm temperatures during shipment and storage that will kill off some or even all of the bacteria. Along with this, it is important that the label guarantees live bacteria at the time of purchase, not at the time of shipment or manufacturing. There is one scientifically validated process truly delivers live bacteria to the intestines by suspending the probiotic bacteria in a moist paste that seals the bacteria in a gelatin ball, completely protected from air and dryness, so the bacteria are alive until the specialized gelatin dissolves in the intestines. Because probiotic bacteria are anerobic, they do not require oxygen to live, and the presence of oxygen can actually injure or kill them. In addition, this coating which seals in the bacteria eliminates the need for the nutritional supplement to be refrigerated. However, it can be kept in the refrigerator if desired. By protecting the bacteria on the shelf and in the body, the probiotic can successfully reach the intestine, resulting in a greater number of healthy, intact bacteria to colonize in the intestine. <bio>Visit VitaNet Health Foods at http://vitanetonline.com/ VitaNet sells high quality vitamins and herbs at discount prices and name brands like Source Naturals and Kal brand vitamins and herbs.
Fructooligosaccharides, which shall henceforth be referred to as FOS for obvious reasons, are sugars with chemical linkages known as osidic covalent bonds that resist enzymic hydrolysisis, and so are broken down by neither the salivary nor the digestive enzymes. In other words, they are indigestible.

However, before discussing the biochemistry further, let's have a look at what they can be used for. Your body depends upon certain bacteria for its health. These are essential to help break down and digest certain foods, and also to provide a resistance to disease and infection. FOS is what is known as a prebiotic, which used to feed these friendly bacteria. Just like any other living organism, bacteria require nourishment and while they get plenty of food from our own diet, especially from the fiber content, they find FOS particularly appetizing.

Because fructooligosaccharides cannot be digested, it passes unchanged into the colon, where these bacteria live. As they break down the FOS and live on it, they multiply, and create an environment in your lower intestine that is hostile to many harmful bacteria such as Clostridia and E. coli. However, it is not only these harmful bacteria that cause problems with your digestion since there many other agents that can interfere with the smooth functioning of your gastrointestinal tract.

People all over the world are continually suffering from both minor and very serious digestive problems, ranging from heartburn and upset stomachs to severe diarrhea, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome and even bowel cancers. There is a multitude of reasons for that such as the effects of aging, poor diet and bacteria from contaminated food. Organic foodstuffs do not last long in many warm countries, and while spices can be used to hide the taste, they are not always successful in killing off the bacteria.

Your health depends on a healthy digestive system, and when that is wrong then you will feel ill. If your digestive system is running below par, then you will not feel good, and could suffer from a wide range of symptoms, including tiredness, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, fevers and depression. The health of your intestinal tract in particular is often neglected, and most people need to do something to give it a boost and improve its, and their, overall health.

That is what FOS can do. And it can do more than just feed friendly bacteria: it can help you maintain regular bowel movements, maintain healthy blood sugar levels, maintain a healthy immune system, break down hormones and rebuild them again (it is useful for the relief of the symptoms of PMS) and to keep down the cholesterol and fatty acid levels in your blood. It is used to feed beneficial bacteria, not to replace them, and if you are on a probiotic supplement, you can take FOS along with it.

Fructooligosaccharides are also used as artificial sweeteners, and alternative names for them oligofructan and oligofructose. There are two classes of FOS, the first of which is produced commercially by the chemical or enzymic degradation of inulin, a polymer of D-fructose linkages terminated with D-glucose. This is produced commercially predominantly in Belgium and Holland, and it also occurs naturally in chicory and Jerusalem artichoke, and in lesser amounts in bananas, garlic, tomatoes and onions.

The second class of FOS is produced mainly in Japan. This is produced by a process known as the transfructosylation of a B-fructosidase from saccharose or aspergillus niger, a black mould found on onions and grapes. This is basically the same as the first class, although the chemical bonds are in different places.

While they resist breakdown by enzymes, they are fermented in the colon by anaerobic bacteria, bacteria that work in the absence of oxygen. Because they are fairly soluble, they can be added to dairy products such as yoghurt and used to feed the bacteria contained in the yoghurt. In fact many supplements containing acidophilus bacteria are fortified with FOS: you drink the bacteria along with its food.

Although FOS is only now assuming increasingly popularity in the West, it has been used as a dietary supplement in Japan for many years. Some of the specific health benefits that FOS coveys by promoting the health of essential bacteria, are:

Calcium and Magnesium Absorption

There have been several studies that have concluded that FOS and inulin improve the absorption of calcium in the intestine of both animals and humans. The fermentation of the FOS by bacteria reduces the pH of the gut, which increases the solubility of these minerals and hence extracts more of them from food. The increased solubility also helps them to be more easily absorbed through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. FOS can therefore help to maintain bone density and prevent osteoporosis.

Strengthened Immune System

By taking a supplement of FOS, you can increase the density of friendly bacteria in your gut fivefold in a matter of weeks. This crowds out harmful bacteria, and so the level of toxins in your body is reduced. Your immune system is allowed to work properly to fight of infection and disease without having to work hard on keeping down the harmful bacteria in your gut.

Promotes Regularity

Apart from being a food for bacteria, since it is not digestible FOS is also a soluble fiber that draws water into your colon, and so promotes easy transport of feces by the peristaltic pumping action of the intestinal muscles. It also absorbs excess water in the chyme and feces and so helps to prevent diarrhea. Furthermore, improving the health of the friendly bacteria also improves your digestive health that also promotes regularity.

Increased Energy

The fermentation of FOS by bacteria produces gases and acids. These acids help the body to produce energy, and although not a massive energy boost, when allied to the improved digestion it is significant.

All of these benefits and more suggest that FOS is highly recommended in the event of sporadic and chronic gastrointestinal problems. It is a natural substance that does not have a direct influence on your body's biochemistry, but promotes the health and reproduction of those bacteria that do have a significant influence on intestinal health. Add that to the added benefits discussed above, and FOS is one of these supplements that could almost be called essential.<bio>More information on FOS is available at VitaNet ®, LLC Health Food Store. http://vitanetonline.com/</bio>

You've dug the hole in your backyard. You've installed the liner, and all of the pipes and filters are in place. You've filled your new pond with water. But now what? Should you add plants or fish to the new pond? Well, before you do that, you'll need to season the pond. Similar to an indoor aquarium, certain nitrifying bacteria need to be in place to help promote the proper environment for plants and fish to grow and thrive.

These nitrifying bacteria do not exist in a new pond, and need to grow. Instead of simply adding plants and fish to a new pond, you'll need to give the pond time to develop these bacteria, but there are some steps that you can take to help the bacteria develop.

A new filter will keep your water clean, but they are sterile, containing no bacteria. You will need to get some of these nitrifying bacteria growing in your filter These bacteria do not grow if the water is too cold. So, in the spring, when the water starts to warm up, you can add enzymes to your pond to promote the growth of this bacteria. Do not do any backwashing for about a month, to allow the nitrifying bacteria a chance to grow in the filter. After a month, you can backwash as directed. And after the first month, it is important to backwash the filter since the pollutants that encourage the growth of good bacteria also encourage the growth of bad bacteria. If you have a UV filter, keep it turned off for the first month to give the bacteria a chance to build up.

The bacteria need some nutrients to grow. These nutrients can be found in organic waste. So, add a couple of koi or goldfish to your pond. The waste from the fish will give the bacteria what they need to grow. Just be sure not to overpopulate the pond. At this point, a couple of fish are all that is needed. You can add more later, after the bacteria is established. Remember that chlorine can kill the fish, so if your water is chlorinated, be sure to add some de-chlorinator to the water before you add the fish.

Given time, the nitrifying bacteria will build up in your pond, and will promote a healthy environment for the aquatic animals and plants that you choose to stock your pond with. If you follow these steps, and have a bit of patience, a healthy ecosystem will develop in your pond or water garden, giving you years of enjoyment. <bio>Visit http://www.water-gardens-fountains.com for more tips and advice on building and maintaining a water garden, and for water garden supplies. </bio>

Canine flatulence is not a fun thing to experience. Dogs tend to have very smelly gas and, apart from the nasal assault, you`ll notice that your pet is rather uncomfortable as well. Gas in dogs can be the result of several different problems and it is best to try and figure out which one is the issue before you attempt to treat your dog.

Possible Causes of Canine Gas

Your dog is most likely suffering from a fairly minor problem, but in some cases, gas can be a sign of something more serious. If your dog appears to be in severe pain or has gone off his food, be sure to see your vet immediately. Anytime you suspect the problem could be serious, call your vet. You know your pet better than anyone else and you should follow your instincts.

Now, let`s look at some of the most common problems that cause gas in dogs.

Eating too fast. This is especially an issue in larger breeds, such as German Shepherds. If your dog is eating too quickly, he is gulping down air, as well, which reaches his intestines quickly and comes out the other end as gas. Try giving your dog smaller amounts of food, a bit at a time, to teach him to eat slower.

Change in food.

Some dogs are particularly sensitive to changes in diet and you may find that if you buy another brand of food, your dog will suffer from flatulence. This can also happen when too many table scraps are given. This can be tested by going back to the original food brand for a few days . . . the gas should be gone. The best way to avoid this problem is to make diet changes very gradual, mixing a small amount of the new food with the regular food and slowly increasing it.

Intestinal worms.

Worms are notorious for causing gassiness and it can be quite unpleasant for your dog. Check your dog`s stool for signs of worms. It`s also a good idea to de-worm your pet at least once a year, but if you find nasty critters in his feces, you may need to do this more often. Whether you de-worm at home or have the vet do it is up to you.

Poor diet.

Not all dog food is the same. Some are made almost entirely out of wheat or other similar grains and this is definitely not friendly for a dog`s stomach. An overabundance of fiber or the wrong type of carbs can wreak havoc on your puppy`s digestive system and result in gas. To solve this issue, invest in good quality dog food that is correctly balanced for your animal.

Slow intestinal tract. Dogs get out of shape, just like humans, and this often results in constipation and extra gas. If you want to reduce the chances of this occurring or to fix an existing problem, you will need to help your dog stay fit. A nice long stroll after dinner will help your and the dog`s digestive system function faster.

Bad bacteria in the intestine. Sometimes, when your dog is eating or mouthing things that he shouldn`t, bad bacteria get into his body. These can cause all sorts of problems in the intestines and it`s a good idea to get rid of them. This is possible by adding probiotics (good bacteria) to your dog`s food to reestablish a balance of healthy bacteria.

You don`t have to live with nasty gas and neither does your dog. Check the symptoms and you should be able to diagnose and treat minor problems yourself. However, if you ever have doubts, don`t hesitate to talk to your vet.<bio>Reduce dog odor with natural dog grooming supplies.
