To get to those glorious places though, the right equipment will have to be worn.

Hikers will rely on long underwear during the wintertime to ward off the winter chill. During summer, however, the hiker might rely on a good pair of jeans and a light shirt accompanied by a lightweight vest and a pair of sunglasses. All types of camping gear can be carried along in a backpack and wherever the hiker is when sunset approaches is where they will strike camp for the night. The hiker might adjust to the lower temperatures at night by donning a heavier gauge of socks.

Other types of camping and hiking gear will be needed in the springtime. A hiker might need to don gloves or mitten in the early morning hours and store them away after the sun comes up high on a ridge. The backpacks will hold the sleeping bag tight with tethered straps attached on the outside, and the one-person tent will roll up nicely inside. The hiker might take some camping and hiking gear for refreshments after a few hours on the trail, such as water bottles or a bottle to hold water that was filtered through a pump immersed in the creek bed.

Some campers will be prepared to stay in the woods for a week or more and they will bring camping and hiking gear that will allow them to cook warm meals at night. The camp cooking gear might be a butane stove or a small pot that cooks well on coals. The forest are a natural source of cooking fuel but campers will ensure that all fires are out before they lay down to rest for the night. Campers do not working about sleeping on the cold hard ground if they bring camping and hiking gear such as sleeping pads along with them on the nature trail.

Hikers know how to dress for all outdoor environments and still be fashionable even there is nobody else in sight. The camping and hiking gear brought along for a trip will always include sandals, running shoes, or snow boots to ensure all conditions are enjoyable. A hiker might even choose to take some climbing footwear if there will be rock formations along his route. All of these fashion footwear accessories for a hiker can also be adapted for use by a camper.

Some camping and hiking gear is carried along to ensure that hiker's will find their way back to camp or to the spot in the woods where the truck is parked. Technological advances in satellite imagery have allowed camping and hiking gear choices to guide people along the various routes in the woods by equipping devices with global positioning software. Other camping and hiking gear will help hikers keep track of time and the number of miles traveled on foot. These camping and hike accessories will also tell hikers if bad weather is on the way.<bio>James Brown writes about Sun and Ski Sports.com coupon code, Mountain Gear coupon code and Backcountry coupon code</bio>

Hiking is a great sport for someone who wants to be in the outdoors, and experience a sense of complete freedom and satisfaction. But it is an activity that requires all the precautionary measures to be considered before participating. In the past, a person was accompanied by a local tracker on a hiking trip. This tracker was experienced and familiar with the particular location.

These days, the GPS (global positioning system) is replacing some of the functions of the local trekker. The GPS allows you to perform the trip on your own without the help of another person. In order to figure out which GPS would work for you, the GPS should be examined further.

The GPS system shows you where you are, and shows you the route you are following and what routes are possible. If you are traveling in an area that hasn't been mapped out yet, you would have to install the map into your GPS before your hiking trip.

When you buy a GPS system for hiking you must take into account the conditions you will be in. Unlike a GPS system in cars or planes or sea vehicles, you will be holding it throughout the entire trip. It has to be durable, water and shock resistant and keep updating areas and locations you as you move along. You should also consider what type of hiker you are, whether you are a serious hiker, or just a person who goes out on the weekends. This knowledge would give you a better understanding about the features you need. The most well known brands for hikers are Garmin and Magellan.

The main thing to remember is that you need a system which is more functional and has the most detailed mapping capabilities in the area you are going to hike. Things like shape, size, or color are not as necessary, make sure you consider what you need. <bio>David Matthews is a staff writer at http://gps-advisor.com and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including http://travel-gazette.com. </bio>

For lovers of the outdoors, there is nothing more enjoyable than getting away from the rat-race by taking a long hike in the wilderness. Indeed with so many of us confined to our desks in office jobs, caught up in the hectic bustle of city living, there is no greater need to get back to nature. Hiking is one of the best ways of doing just that. Not only does hiking take us into the restorative calm of the wilderness, reminding us of the wonders of nature, it is also a terrific way to exercise!

Ask any serious hiker, and they will tell you that it is imperative to have the right gear before you set out on a hike. After all, when you are out in the wilderness, you need to be prepared for anything. Embarking on a hike without the proper equipment is not only foolhardy, it can be downright dangerous!

The sort of gear and equipment you will need for your hike will depend on the weather conditions you are likely to encounter; the terrain you will be hiking through and the duration of your hike. Each hike is different, so you need to think through your equipment with every individual outing.

That said there is a variety of essential gear to get you started. For example, quality fitted hiking boots are a must. Many hikers opt for heavy duty, waterproof hiking boots that can endure all weather and terrain. Be sure your hiking boots are well fitted -- sore blistered feet are no fun!

A good quality rain jacket is another must have. This will be one of your first purchases, and you should always opt for a durable, light jacket if possible. Even if you don't expect wet weather, rain jackets are light and easy to carry, and you would be surprised how often weather forecasts are incorrect! Always carry a compass and a map, even on the most basic route. While you may never either of these items, it is imperative to have them in the even you get lost.

Likewise, you should take along a small but well-stocked first aid kit, a flash light and waterproof matches. If you plan to do overnight hikes, you'll also need to look into tents, sleeping bags, packs and cooking equipment.

Whatever your plan, the items mentioned above are the basic, indispensable items that all sensible hikers recommend no matter what the level or experience of the hiker. No backpack is ready without them! <bio>outdoorthread.com gives advice on http://www.outdoorthread.com, http://www.outdoorthread.com/hikingarticles/index.html and http://www.outdoorthread.com/hiking-trails/index.html </bio>

Some of the best things about Italy are found completely within the Western Alps, if you're a hiker. Of course there's the country's highest peak, which no hiker can resist. Then there is Italy's oldest national park, also found in the Western Alps. Count the amazing variety of flora and fauna, the alpine meadows, and accessible yet remote wilderness areas, and you have the perfect setting for a hiker's dream vacation in beautiful Italy. Discover Colonna mine or encounter wildlife throughout Vallone del Grand Nomenon. Reach your personal goals and try for the six-day trek along the Alta Via 2, known as a particularly challenging route. From Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso (Gran Paradiso National Park) to Valle d'Aosta, to Monte Bianco (the highest peak in Europe), there is a series of wonderful pathways for hikers and walkers who will find that traversing the Western Alps to be the experience of a lifetime.

Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso will stun you with its beauty: deep lateral peaks and plunging valleys below will amaze even the most seasoned hiker. The valleys were cut by glaciers, which left behind the jagged silhouettes and sharp peaks for which the Alps in general have become famous. There are numerous glaciers still within Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso, including Italy's highest mountain, Gran Paradiso.

Gran Paradiso is just about 13,324 feet high and full of magnificent larch. Larch is a deciduous conifer, the only type found in all of Europe. Some trees get to be over one hundred feet tall and great stands of larch form sweeping green canopies in the sky which will protect you from the sun as you walk or hike the mountain. Besides larch, hikers will welcome Norway spruce, Arolla pine, and silver fir. The Arolla pine should be especially revered because it's in decline here in Italy. Furniture makers and others crave the beautiful wood for their products, and the pine has been exploited for many years.

Gran Paradiso also hosts several species of birds that are rarely, if ever, found anywhere else in Europe. Take the Bearded Vulture, which was hunted almost to extinction in the 1800s because it was thought to feed on domestic animals. Since the 1970's, however, it's been reintroduced and is now making a comeback. Also, while scaling the mountain, keep an eye out for white partridges, owl, jackdaw, alpine chaffinch, and spotted woodpecker. You might even see a lynx if you get to the higher, rocky areas during summertime. When it's cooler, they come down into the valleys.

Getting to Alle d'Aosta is easy: take a SAVDA bus from Torino (Turin) or Milan. It's also near France's Annecy, Chamonix, and Vald'Isere, and Switzerland's Martigny, if you're in either of those neighboring areas. There are also regional trains to Aosta, via Chivasso if you're leaving from Milan. You can also drive: take the A5 from either Turin or Milan.

Accommodations in Valle d'Aosta include moderately-priced small hotels around Aosta and in the suburb of Sarre. Use any one of these as you base, and enjoy the wonderful experience of hiking Italy's Western Alps, and Valle d'Aosta. <bio>Macchi http://www.keywestvacationguide.com/ </bio>

Perhaps you view hiking as easy or a "piece of cake" as some would say. Put on some boots, shorts and a shirt and off you go. How hard can it be? Well, walking is not necessarily the same thing as hiking. Ask any experienced hiker.

Now, some hikes may very well be that easy and those hikes should be. Not all hikes need to be a three or four day venture in the mountains, or navigating through forests or across streams and rivers. It is perfectly fine to just want some fresh air and exercise in nature's surroundings.

But, if you want to expand your hiking there are some things you should consider in preparation.

An outdoor vacation such as hiking tours does not necessarily fit the "vacation" definition as other vacations may. Yes, you will enjoy yourself but do not approach hiking vacations in the same manner you would a vacation to the Caribbean.

First, you will want to get in shape. Try taking brief, more level hikes in your local area to prepare yourself for the longer hikes. If your lifestyle is fairly sedentary, you will want to slowly build your endurance for the more rigorous hikes. Pain is a top reason why many do not stick to an exercise plan, and that pain is often caused by doing too much too soon.

Obviously, your legs will bear most of the initial burden during the hike, but many muscles are involved actually. Begin preparing yourself with some daily leg squats and thrusts to strengthen your lower muscle groups.

Try to hike with at least one partner unless you are very familiar with the area and it is not a challenging terrain. It is especially important to not hike alone if you are in a new, unfamiliar travel destination. Even for the experienced hiker, signing up for hiking tours in the new area can help familiarize you with the terrain before venturing out on your own. The last thing you want is to get lost in an unfamiliar area.

GPS units and other tools can help, but keep in mind that not all GPS units function in all areas. Also, GPS units will not help if you become ill or injure yourself.

Avoid drinking water from creeks or streams. They may be "natural" sources of water but they are more likely than not full of bacteria, animal waste and other unhealthy toxins even if not man-made pollutants.

Stay on clearly marked trails until you are familiar with the area and gain more experience. Though maps are helpful for those who can read them, GPS units are probably a better option for most hikers. Spend some time learning how to use it and verify that it will work in the area you will be hiking.

Hiking can be a fascinating adventure. Start slowly, and soon you will be ready for the overnight or all day hikes through some of the most beautiful parks, forest and mountains around! <bio>Focusing on news and information about Denia, Clinton Maxwell wrote mainly for http://www.alicante-spain.com .
Whether or not a hiker uses a maps or GPS unit has nothing to do with skill level. Even experienced hikers use these navigational tools.

Actually, more experienced hikers than beginners tend to rely on maps or GPS units since beginners and amateur hikers tend to think they will not need it. Beginners often think that they do not need to learn how to use maps and stick by the reasoning that well-traveled trails cannot be that difficult to follow. To this, experienced hikers chuckle and sarcastically wish them luck!

Truth is that you can get lost, even with visible, well marked trails and this is not a laughing matter. It is possible for any hiker to inadvertently travel off a trail. You would be surprised how easy it can be to get turned around. Stepping a short distance off a trial into a thick forest has confused many hikers and soon they are lost.

Many maps will not actually help you find your way out of the forest, but you can usually find a trail that connects to your previous trail. If anything, it can help you return to starting point. A tourist uses a map to navigate through a new city, and similarly you can view hiking as "tourism through a new forest." It can save you a lot of headaches and even worse!

Here's how to get started:

Get a current map of the area you are planning to hike. Take some time to study it beforehand to get familiar with the symbols and general trail connections.

Becoming familiar with the symbols is important. Almost all will have a legend, but symbols in general tend to differ among publishers. You should also determine what the scale being used is. Look for 1 inch = 2 miles or something similar as it can vary. Keep in mind that it is not all about distance. One mile on a level terrain is not the same thing as three-quarter of a mile near sea level then to a 2,000 feet winding incline.

For the latter, look at altitude on a map which is usually indicated by a series of curved lines. The distance between the lines circling a hill or another natural feature indicates the altitude of that area. The closer the lines are the higher the altitude.

As far as longitude and latitude, longitude runs vertically north and south while latitude runs horizontally east and west (or right and left).

During the day, you can use natural features such as the sun which sets in the West and rises in the East. This means that early in the day if you find the sun you are usually facing east. Likewise, late in the day, you will be facing mostly west if you turn toward the sun. Of course there are variations due to coastlines and latitude, but this is a good approximate place to start.

Finally, be sure to bring a flashlight to read the map in the unfortunate event you are lost at night! <bio>Focusing on latest developments in Altea, Greg Hansward writes essentially for http://www.alicante-spain.com .
An outdoor vacation such as hiking can be a terrific getaway. Vacations like hiking are far different than other vacations which often require you to make travel reservations and find hotel accommodations. However, some hikers like to make a hike part of a larger vacation and rent a house by a lake. This is a great idea. But, hiking does require some extra precaution unlike other popular getaways to the beach or popular tourist attraction.

Getting lost is possibly the most potential problem for those new to hiking. A few steps off the trail can result in a few additional yards in the wrong direction and, eventually, you are far away from your trail and lost. Or, sometimes hikers misread maps and find they are on a different trail than planned. The point is that however it happened, you are lost. Here is some advice to help you avoid getting lost and what you should do if you do get lost, though hopefully you avoid it in the first place.

It is important to heed to some simple guidelines. Always travel with an experienced hiker. Remain on the visible, clearly marked trails. Use a navigational tool, whether a map, compass or GPS device, but keep in mind that GPS devices do not work everywhere.

If you do get lost, remain calm to help you think clearly. Try to re-trace your steps to the last point in which you knew your location. Look for certain landmarks, such as streams, hills or large rock fixtures that you passed. It is important to pay attention to such landmarks as you hike not only because you want to enjoy the scenery and make note of you surroundings, but also because it will be useful if you become lost. Landmarks can act like a mental map and help you re-trace your steps.

Water runs downhill in any sloping area. Trailheads usually do not start at the beginning of a river, but rather where the river bends to find a large, flat open area of ground. Trailheads usually begin at what this could be referred as to "bottom."

If you are hiking from a high spot, try using the view to look below for campsites or trails. Also, make a note of which way the sun is moving. Remember, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

Don't hesitate to shout out or whistle in an attempt to find a nearby hiker. The last thing you want is to stay overnight without water or food. If the daylight is setting, use your flashlight if you have one to wave it up toward the sky and then in front of you. Learning the Morse code for S.O.S. wouldn't be a bad idea in the event you do find yourself lost.

Finally, be sure someone at home knows when to expect your return. If you do not return, they will know to contact someone and search-and-rescue can begin searching for you. Don't worry. Even experienced hikers have become lost. <bio>Eric Slarkowski continually produces news on subjects similar to Malaga and Oliva.
Hiking can be a great experience, but you will want to prepare before you take off, especially if you are a beginner hiker. Though not always the case, hiking is not like traditional vacations which require preparation in terms of locating your accommodation, finding a beach front vacation rental or other details such holidays entail. Hiking requires preparation related to fitness and essential items specific to hiking.

Of course, you want to make sure you have achieved general fitness as hiking requires endurance and strength. Once you have achieved a basic fitness level in preparation for your hike, a few specialized activities specifically related to hiking that can help you prepare even more.

Though not essential, walking barefoot around the yard or house can help toughen the soles of your feet. Yes, you will be wearing hiking boots and quality socks but it isn't a bad idea to have something under your socks that is tougher than soft, tender skin.

Benzoin is a special ointment that can help with sores, gradually make skin tougher and even helps kill germs. As any experienced hiker would likely agree, dealing with blisters needs an entirely separate article to fully describe. But, if you do get blisters it is important to puncture them and avoid doing too much walking until they heal if possible. You can try to avoid blisters by covering the parts of your feet that are more likely to develop them with a band-aid or moleskin. Also, be sure you have trimmed your toenails before heading out for the hike, but be sure to not trim them down too far.

Another good idea is to gradually work up to a long hike in stages, maybe one to two miles. If you are in fairly good shape, you should limit yourself to around five miles at first. Hiking is more demanding than simply walking on your sidewalk, as it usually entails walking on slanted, uneven surfaces. For this reason, it is a good idea to build up your endurance at least in terms of distance.

Once you are up to at least five miles, you may want to start walking with a backpack to become used to the extra weight. Carry some water bottles, whether reusable sport bottles or the pre-filled disposable bottles. Or, at least bring along a sports drink but avoid the beverages with a lot of added sugar. Though sugar is actually essential to life and not as bad as often claimed, the amount of sugar in some sports drinks is not the best choice when you want to achieve optimal results.

Of course, nobody wants to get lost which is why it is important to have some type of navigational guide. This is especially true if you are going to an unfamiliar area or onto unmarked trails. You can choose a map, compass or a GPS unit all of which can help provide some direction. Of course, you want a GPS unit you know how to use if you prefer this device.

As you see, hiking is not just a walk or stroll through a forest. It takes preparation to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience! <bio>Peter Wilson routinely pens articles on issues associated to Elche and Gandia.
With forethought and a little imagination your camping trip can be very enjoyable and a bit of an adventure. Before I go off on holiday I always have a practice in my garden and make sure I can remember how to put my tent up. When my tent is erected this also gives me the chance to check that all the pieces are there and in good working order and I can also make sure my tent is waterproof. If I have bought a new tent then this will give me the chance to familiarise myself with it before I venture out. Just think how embarrassed I would feel if I arrived at my beautiful destination and didn't know how to assemble my holiday accommodation!

When I have chosen my destination and found my camping site I think facilities, do I want to have them readily available or do I want to 'rough it'. If I were a happy hiker and carrying my tent and equipment in a rucksack then depending on where I stopped for the night I may have to forgo some of life's little creature comforts. I would also be limited to how much I can physically carry so I would have to remember to take this into account when packing.

If I were travelling by car or van then obviously I can take more equipment and can travel further afield. There are many organised camping sites available world-wide. They vary from basic sites with water and toilet facilities to ones that also include a swimming pool, shops, restaurants and entertainment. Costs will vary immensely so I always weigh up my options before I decide. Do I want peace and quiet and open spaces, basic facilities or a more sociable and busy holiday full of entertainment, the choice is mine.

I really do think it is a good idea to make a list before I embark on any trip. For camping you really do need to remember the basics. A drinking vessel, water, plate, cutlery, pot for cooking and heating water in, a torch and of course a warm sleeping bag are a definite must as is the one thing most people forget -- a can opener! On a personal level, I always think it is also a good idea to take along my own toilet roll. A camping bed or blow up bed are also a must so that I can hopefully have a good nights sleep off the lumpy ground. I also take warm clothes even if I am travelling in the summer as night time can be decidedly chilly in a tent.

Normally when camping I cater for myself so I obviously will need some sort of cooker. I could by a small gas or petrol stove and can choose between single ringed stoves or larger double ringed cookers. It may take skill and ingenuity to cook a three course meal on them but they will do the job of heating or cooking my basic food. Opting for nostalgia and lighting a fire is always a last resort as my surroundings might be dry and a spark could easily set dry undergrowth alight. Apart from the safety aspect fuel would have to be collected for the fire, not easy if there are no old branches or pieces of wood in the near vicinity.

Careful thought goes into what food to take. If I only have one cooking ring then there is no point in taking food which needs to be oven cooked! Unless I can buy fresh food daily then tinned food is ideal as I won't have a fridge to keep perishable food in.

Most importantly remember to do as I do and leave my camping site as I would wish to find it, clean and tidy, I remove all my rubbish and leave it looking as if I was never there. <bio>Simon Cantene is a passionate hiker and camping enthusiast with a wealth of practical experience "under canvas".
You can find package holidays to take you everywhere from a beach resort to a dude ranch to an outdoor wilderness adventure. If you anticipate traveling anytime soon and want to experience the great outdoors, you might want to consider hiking. If you are a beginner hiker, read some of the tips and techniques below to help get you started. Hiking is not simply a long walk.

Hiking through ordinary terrain requires that you maintain a steady pace for hours at a time, and do so with only short breaks each hour. This might not seem that bad, until you ad in creeks and steep, slipper slopes that can make hiking at a higher altitude seem nearly impossible. It surely isn't impossible, but it does require certain techniques that must be adjusted according to the conditions you are in.

Walking on ordinary level terrain is usually done at a speed of two to four miles per hour at which pace you can burn anywhere from 50-150 calories hourly. Additionally, you lose about one liter of fluid for every hour of hiking and even more during a hot climate. This fluid loss must be replenished to keep your body hydrated. But, when the conditions become more challenging, you often find yourself walking up steeper slopes and at high elevations causing more of a strain and requiring your heart to work harder.

The more challenging terrains tend to be the most beautiful, though. Would you rather stroll around some brush in ordinary terrain or hike up a thick forested mountain? But, the conditions up that thick forested mountainside require more from the hiker tackling it. Be sure to pace yourself and monitor your heart rate. Try to stay on the lower range of 70 to 120 beats per minute, the average rate at rest and then during a harder workout.

This can help you avoid what is sometimes called Acute Mountain Sickness or High Altitude Syndrome, among other terms. Just as high altitudes can present challenges, crossing rivers and lakes can as well. Along with strength, experience and technique can make it a lot easier also.

Finding quality boots is the first step, specifically a waterproof, high-top boot to keep your feet dry. This is a must to avoid foot problems.

As far as technique for such conditions, it's about experience, common sense and intelligence. For instance, avoid the temptation of fording a river when you do not need it. Undercurrents, cold temperatures and slippery bottoms are only a few of the dangers you could face. If possible, step on rocks in a stream rather than directly walking through the water. Or, take a bridge or walk around the lake rather than swimming through it.

These alternatives will actually save energy. You will have less fatigue with a longer walk than a cold, short swim. Remember, a lot of it is about common sense. Hiking in the great outdoors can be an amazing experience, but getting injured or becoming unwell should not be part of the experience. <bio>Leroy Calstard writes articles mainly for http://www.alicante-spain.com , an internet site on Gandia and Moraira.
Gear up for an exhilarating day in the great outdoors. Whether you're a beginner or a veteran hiker, being prepared and following a few hiking basics can help make your adventure as safe as it is sensational.

You don't have to be a professional hiker to fully enjoy a hiking adventure. Hiking basics begin with a good sense of the outdoors and a willingness to get connected with the wilderness. The right equipment and supplies can help ensure a successful outdoor adventure.

Hiking Boots

Can you safely say, andquot; These boots are made for hikingandquot;? If not, it's time to go shopping. Hiking basics start from the ground up, so make sure you've got a good foundation. There are all sorts of different styles of hiking boots to choose from. Choose your boots and wear them for a few days before your hiking trip. If your boots are nicely broken in, blisters and sore feet won't spoil your hike. Remember, your feet will be your only source of transportation on the trail, so you've got to keep them comfortable.

Clothes and Accessories

There are no fashion runways in the forest, but it's still important to choose the right clothing and accessories. You want to be comfortable, but you need protection. Layering your clothes is always best. Start with a light shirt or tank, and then wear flannel or fleece over top. If the hike heats up, you can tie the top shirt around your waist; if the air gets chilly, you've got an extra layer of warmth available. Zip-off and roll-up cargo pants are also great for offering flexibility and comfort. Remember to bring a hat and sunglasses, just in case your hike takes you to a sunny spot.

Food and Water

It's important to keep your energy and hydration levels on track while you're on the trail, so pack plenty of snacks and fresh water. It's great to pack light, but more important to have enough water and food when you get hungry or need an energy boost. Fruit, trail mix and protein bars are all easy to pack, and packed with energy. Just be sure to take any food wrappings with you. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks that give you an initial boost, and then cause you to crash. Sugar doesn't replenish energy, so leave it at home. Drink lots of water along the trail to keep from being dehydrated, particularly on hot summer hikes.

Survival Supplies

Don't underestimate nature, or overestimate your navigational skills. Accidents can happen and you may become lost, so be prepared for anything. Pack a first aid kit for unexpected cuts and mishaps, and bring anything you might need in the event you get stuck or lost. Chances are, you'll never need your survival kit, but in this case, it's better to bring what you don't need, than it is to need what you don't have.

Respect Nature

Leave nothing behind, and take only your memories. These are important hiking basics for all adventurers. Nature is a gift that must be respected as well as enjoyed. Take a break every now and again to appreciate your gorgeous surroundings. Bring a camera to capture your memories. Smell the flowers and breathe in the fresh air. A few quiet moments can create memories that last a lifetime.

A few hiking basics are all you need to hit the trail for a great day outdoors. If you have kids that can safely hike the trails, bring them along to let them experience natural wonders they don't get to see everyday. You'll all see the world in a whole new way. <bio>Nancy Jackson writes articles for several popular web sites, including http://zigug.com and http://yogey.com </bio>

To truly experience the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, hiking from the rim to the river can be a rewarding and life-changing adventure.

The hike from the canyon rim to the floor of the valley and back up again can be tackled by most relatively fit people -- even the novice hiker. Make no mistake, it is a tough hike but you don't need to be an athlete to complete it successfully.

It is possible for an experienced hiker to trek to the bottom and back up the other side in one day, however, if you have the time available try to plan your hike over three or more days to make the most of this experience.

During the planning process for your trek you might want to read some of the many books available on Grand Canyon hiking. There are also videos/DVDs available and any of these resources will start to give you an idea of the trail you might prefer to take from the rim to the canyon floor and back up again.

It is a popular idea with hikers to begin their descent from one rim, hike to the floor of the canyon and then hike out on the opposite side.

This particular hike poses the problem of where to leave your car; or more importantly, how to get back to your car it you exit the canyon on, say, the south rim, and your car is parked on the north rim. The distance from the south rim to the north rim is only about ten miles as the crow flies but it is a 220 mile car trip! Some hikers arrange to swap car keys with a group hiking in the opposite direction. If this option isn't available to you, there is a shuttle that runs between the two rims.

You can choose a guided Grand Canyon hike or a self-guided hike. If you choose a self-guided hike you must start out with a good map. There are many different maps available and you'll want to ensure that your map covers the trails you wish to hike plus the campgrounds.

When To Hike

Let's start with when not to go Grand Canyon hiking! June, July and August are scorchingly hot and should be avoided. The north rim and all its facilities are closed from mid November to mid May. The most pleasant time of year to attempt a Grand Canyon hike is mid May to early June and late September to mid November. An advantage of trekking in the spring is the presence of many beautiful wildflowers on the canyon floor.

Which Track?

>From the north rim the only track to the canyon floor is the North Kaibab Trail. It is approximately 13 miles from the north rim to Bright Angel Campground and the trail descends 5400 feet. There is reliable water available. From the south rim there is a choice of the South Kaibab Trail which is 5.6 miles and descends 4500 feet, or Bright Angel Trail which is 9.7 miles in length and descends 4260 feet. There is reliable water on Bright Angel Trail but there is no water available on South Kaibab.

Because of the lack of water and the steepness of the gradient, South Kaibab is recommended as a descent track rather than a climbing track.

For hikers who choose to hike from the south rim to the canyon floor before returning to the south rim, descending via the South Kaibab Trail and climbing out via the Bright Angel Trail is a good option.

Serious backpackers who are prepared to carry a tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment and food along with their drinking water, extra clothing and toiletries can stay in any of the campsites. For those hikers who'd like a little more comfort at the end of the day, Phantom Ranch, a historic National Park lodge built in the 1920s stands alongside Bright Angel Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River. They serve simple but hearty meals and this is a great place to relax before the climb back to the rim and the conclusion of your Grand Canyon hike. <bio>Alison Stevens is an online author and maintains the Hiking And Camping Website http://www.hikingandcampingsite.com/blog/ to assist hikers, campers and backpackers to choose the right equipment. </bio>

If you've ever been out hiking on a trail, or even walking along a back road, you've probably seen people using walking sticks. Walking sticks (also known as hiking sticks or poles) are long poles or sticks used to help a hiker keep their balance and for many other duties while in the great outdoors. Some people may wonder if a walking stick will help them out while climbing mountains or hiking trails, and the answer is unequivocally, yes!

Walking sticks are very commonly used by hikers in areas of Europe with mountainous terrain, such as in the Alps. The stick or pole can help you to balance while you're walking in areas that can be slippery or hard to get footing on -- such as shale, mud or sand. You can dig into the material with your walking stick and then use it almost as a third leg so you don't slip. You can also use a walking stick to help your knees and back, as you can either prop yourself on it to rest, or use it as a lever to help pull yourself uphill when hiking. Among other uses for walking sticks can include using it as a place to prop up a blanket for a makeshift tent, or even as a way to push aside tall grass or brush so you can pass through these areas more easily.

A good height for a walking stick is between 4 feet and 5.5 feet, depending on your height and the way you plan to use your stick. Walking sticks can be made of all sorts of wood (some people even use broom handles), but an important necessity for a good walking stick is a handle or strap. Hiking poles, which are a type of walking stick, are generally made of metal and may have a spike or cleat at the end for digging into the ground. No matter which type of walking stick you choose for your hiking needs, you can definitely benefit from the use of a stick. <bio>Get Walking Sticks and Folding Walking Sticks at http://www.walking-stick.net/ </bio>

I wear large size boots, so going to the shoe store is not exactly a picnic. You see, it is hard enough to find large shoes in my size, but to get large size boots is almost impossible.

Of course, there are some moon boots and clunkers like that, but I am a hiker, and I need special hiking shoes to keep my feet happy on the long trails. But, although I can usually find a pair or two of large size boots at any store, there isn't the selection that I like unless I go to the big outlet stores, or buy my footwear on the internet.

Of course, the internet is right out for me. Companies often change the build of their shoes without announcing it to anyone, and there is nothing to do about it but try on each pair of shoes that you buy.

Last time I bought a pair of my large size boots online instead of in the shoe store, I thought that I would get something that would fit me. After all, it was the same pair that I had bought last time, and my feet hadn't grown at all.

But, when I got the large size boots in the mail, it turned out that they were not just too small, or too big, but shaped differently altogether. They were tighter across the bridge of my foot, longer, and narrower, and so didn't fit at all in any dimension. I learned my lesson then, I'll tell you.

At this point, I buy all of my large size boots at the outlet, but I didn't always do this. The problem with using outlet shoe stores is that you have to have a pretty good idea of what you want to begin with going in to the store.

After all, you will only have one brand to chose from, and if you don't like the large size boots that they make, you will have driven out all of the way to nowhere for no purpose at all. The best thing to do if you are looking for large size boots and don't know exactly what you want, is to ask friends with large boots what they like on their feet.

That way, you will have something to go on, and won't just be blindly searching out the first outlet that you hear about, and wasting your time driving all over the town. <bio>Let's go find some large size boots online. http://largesizeboots.info </bio>

Hiking is an outdoor sport that requires no equipment. It's one of the least expensive sports you can engage in. It's basically walking, conducted in a natural setting. Some hiking is goal-oriented, with a specific distance or destination in mind, while other hikes take the form of rambling, with no particular goal other than exercise and enjoyment.

Hiking can be a social experience. You can join hiking groups and clubs to meet people with similar interests. Many singles organizations, in fact, run hikes as a form of low-stress get-together. Other people consider hiking to be a peaceful and solitary activity. Keep in mind these different approaches to hiking when you are on the trail.

Observe hiking etiquette whenever you are on a hike. Many hikers prefer peace and quiet, so if you are in a group, avoid shouting your conversations. Many hikers also enjoy seeing wild animals, and loud conversation and loud music are sure ways to scare animals away. Remember that you are in a natural setting and behave accordingly.

Hiking etiquette requires that a group stick to the pace of the slowest hiker so that no one is left behind. The easiest way to do this is to put slow hikers up front. If you find the pace of your group too slow, just choose a different group to hike with the next time.

If you cause a low-hanging branch to brush back, it is proper hiking etiquette to hold the branch for the next person so that it will not snap into their faces. However, it is also proper etiquette to maintain enough distance between yourself and the person in front of you so that they will not have to worry about hurting you with branches.

Right-of-way on hikes is different than the rules of the road for walking and driving. People heading uphill have the right of way on a narrow trail over people going downhill. Smaller groups of hikers have the right of way over larger groups. <bio>http://www.hikingwalkingtrekking.com </bio>

One of the most important things you can get when preparing for a hike is a good hiking backpack. It is obvious that you cannot just carry all the supplies youll need along with you in your hands so a hiking backpack is absolutely necessary. A great hiking backpack is a must for any hiker whether they are a beginner or a professional. A great backpack should be lightweight, sturdy, and be able to hold everything you need for your trip.

1. Why do you need a backpack?

As was hinted at above, the main reason for having a hiking backpack is to hold items - namely, the essential supplies you will need. At the very least you should bring along with you the following items -

- water bottle - first aid kit - camera - cellular phone - change of clothes - tent - blanket

2. What kind of backpack should you get?

There are many different types of hiking backpacks to decide on. You should choose one that will nicely fit all of your goods and be comfortable on your back. Remember you have to carry this backpack with you for the duration of your hike, so you want to purchase one that is comfortable and one that is not too heavy for you.

3. Where to purchase your hiking backpack

There are lots of stores that house backpacks. You can look into any one of your local department stores or you can go one step further and look at the local sporting goods stores in your area. There are also stores that are not in your area that offer catalogs for you to purchase hiking accessories.

4. Shapes and sizes of hiking backpacks

There are all sorts of different sizes and shapes of hiking backpacks. There are even many different colors to look at. It all depends on the backpack that you want and the one that will fit all the items that you want to bring along with you on your hike.

5. Important information on your backpack

When you buy your new hiking backpack, the first thing that you want to do is print your name and address on the backpack. This is important in case you ever lose your backpack or if you ever become lost while hiking. This will make it easier to identify your backpack if lost.

6. Pack before your trip

Planning your hike well will determine the overall enjoyment you will have on your trip. When you are packing your backpack for your hike, make a list of the items that you want to bring with you. Check the items off as you pack them. This will help to ensure that you do not forget any of the items that you want to take with you. For backpack enthusiasts, look into getting an ultralight backpack - this kind of backpack is extremely light yet very strong - perfect for hiking. <bio>For more great backpack related articles and resources check out http://hikingadvice.info </bio>

Taking a hike means expecting the unexpected, so it's best to be prepared for some of the more common things that can occur on a daylong or weeks-long trek. There are some very useful items that you should always take with you any time you go hiking. Obviously, you want to take a backpack. It contains everything -- the things you need to survive in the wilderness.

Most people remember to take a backpack, but it is surprising how many forget to think about taking some kind of rain cover. You may think that you just won't go hiking if it is raining, but you should consider the fact that, many times, a sunny day can turn rainy in an instant. Also, going for a hike on a rainy day will get you used to hiking in the rain, which is likely to occur when you take longer treks. Get a raincoat and include it in your day-hiking equipment.

You may think that you'll only be gone a few hours, so why carry the weight of food, but it is always a good idea to have some food with you on a hike. You never know when a two-hour hike will last longer than that. You might find an interesting trail and find yourself walking around in the woods for many hours. Ultimately, you will get hungry; so carry some food with you when you go hiking.

Your boots are critical. When choosing hiking equipment, remember that every pound of weight in your boots is equivalent to adding five pounds on your back. When you put too much weight on one part of your body, another part is sure to complain. The boots you should wear depend on the kind of trail you are hiking. Many trails can be hiked with just a pair of sneakers on, but others can only be handled with serious and heavy hiking boots. Make your choice appropriately.

If you plan to hike in the rain, you should get a pair of gaiters. They prevent water from running down your legs and into your boots. If you've spent any time waterproofing your boots just to find all your efforts have gone to waste because you didn't seal around the space where your legs go in, you'll appreciate adding gaiters to your hiking equipment.

You should wear two pairs of socks. Having an outer sock made of wool and an inner sock made of polypropylene is a good combination. This method is effective in draining moisture from your feet, and every hiker should use it. <bio>For more articles of interest to men visit http://www.easy-men.com </bio>
