You may be thinking that your child is getting more cold's lately, or maybe it's a tad bit worse. You've just come home from the doctor and your baby is diagnosed with the RSV Virus. Anyway you look at it your pediatrician will elude to the fact that you probably picked up these viruses at "daycare"

Anytime children hang around with other children there is an increased chance of picking up viruses. It's pretty simple and this law applies to everyone. You live in a glass bubble you won't get sick, you go out and you take the chance of getting ill.

But, there are some occurrences in child care centers that really do increase the chances for illness. So it's my duty to tell you why you may see your child getting sick and what you can do about it.

As a parent you have either decided to have your child attend a family center or a group center. Family centers are licensed for up to eight children and group centers are licensed for many more children. One simple fact is that the more children that are present the more chances you take for introducing illness. Very simple, but something you should think about. Group centers are known to be germ factories simply because of the numbers of children that are present.

Another item to keep in mind, it that parents do sometimes send their children sick to daycare. Parents will give their child Tylenol in the morning to "mask" the fever that the child has. By afternoon the Tylenol has worn off and the caregiver has figured out what the parent has done. The caregiver then calls for the sick child to be picked-up. Daycares do remind parents that sick children should not be brought into daycare, but many times parents have no alternatives and feel that they must go to work.

Daycare's must clean and sanitize toys and equipment daily. This definitely cut's down on germs and viruses spreading. Also, children's hands must be washed before and after eating and after bathroom breaks. Hand washing is the #1 way children and daycare facilities can cut down on illness.

Some children for whatever reason seem to get more viruses and illness than others. There just is no explainable reason, but some children I've had in daycare are always ill and others never seem to get ill.

All in all, most childcare centers are healthy places with few occurrences of major illness. Congratulate all the caregivers who do their job in keeping things clean for your children.

©CG Groth Inc. <bio>Christine Groth, author and mentor of Instant Daycare Profits Home Study Course.
Does going to work make you sick? Not the Monday morning "I-don't-wanna-gooooo", or the Friday afternoon "Is-it-the-weekend-yet?" kind of sick, but actually sick? Symptoms such as headache, eye, nose or throat irritation, dry cough, dizziness, nausea, or fatigue might signal that your office has Sick Building Syndrome.

Sounds funny, but Sick Building Syndrome is no laughing matter. It's recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and is described as a situation in which building occupants suffer discomfort (headache, eye, nose or throat irritation, dry cough, dizziness and nausea, fatigue, sensitivity to odors, difficulty concentrating) from being in the building that can't be linked to any other causes or specific illnesses. Ultimately, Sick Building Syndrome means that the air quality in your building is so poor; it's making you sick.

The causes of Sick Building Syndrome are fairly simple. Chemicals in the building contaminate the air; without proper ventilation, they can't escape. The big question here is just how do these chemicals get into the buildings in the first place?

The chemicals that are most likely causing office workers distress are commonly known as VOCs, which stands for volatile organic compounds. VOCs can be emitted as a gas from certain liquids or solid products, and can include a large variety of different chemicals. In particular, VOCs are known to be found in paint, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, building materials, copiers and printers, glues and adhesives, and permanent markers. Carpets are also a huge contributor to low air quality indoors -- don't you remember rolling on the brand new carpet as a kid breathing in that lovely new smell. Mmmmm well, let's not do that anymore. Mold, which can be hidden in the walls and ventilation, is also be a culprit. VOCs, as greenhouse gasses, also contribute to global warming.

All of these products have something in common aside from their heightened levels of VOCs: a strong odor. For example, the smell from the painting going on in the office down the hall might come to mind. That's a sign that you're being flooded with VOC exposure right now! In fact, the EPA estimates that levels of VOCs found indoors can be up to ten times higher than those found outside.

If you think you're suffering from Sick Building Syndrome, do what you can to provide yourself with better ventilation by moving near a window, bringing a fan to the office, and taking frequent breaks to get outside. Don't hesitate to alert the management of your situation, and ask if any changes can be made to the ventilation system.

As far as reducing the levels of VOCs inside offices or homes, be sure to search out a non toxic paint with zero VOCs. These do exist and are priced similar to other traditional premium paints. You'll immediately notice that these are low odor paints. In a work situation, low odor paint and zero VOC paint will not only be less distracting to current workers, but will also not harm the health of future workers. If you're painting a new wall, zero VOC paints are the safest for people (as well as for pets and the environment), and are much less likely to result in Sick Building Syndrome.<bio>Delilah Jones has a passion for zero VOC paint and its impact to consumer safety. She is also interested in how a 100 percent non toxic paint and low odor paint can correlate.</bio>

This election year, the issue of paid sick leave is one of growing concern for employers, labor organizations, and legislators across the country. Since the beginning of the year, 12 states and the District of Columbia have seen the introduction of new legislation requiring employers to offer their employees paid sick leave in various forms. San Francisco and Washington, D.C. recently enacted legislature requiring employers to allow their staff to begin accumulating paid sick time based on hours worked. In May, New Jersey approved legislation requiring companies to offer six weeks of paid leave to workers wishing to care for a new child or sick relative. And in Ohio, advocacy groups are working to place a paid sick leave mandate on the November ballot requiring the accrual of paid sick time immediately upon beginning employment.

The Push for Paid Leave

The growing movement to make paid sick leave a basic labor standard in the United States stems from the fact that nearly half of all American workers are currently ineligible to receive pay for time missed due to illness (source: Bureau of Labor Statistics). Workers argue that when they become ill, they are forced to choose between going to work sick or missing wages - or, in some cases, risking a reprimand or dismissal.

Challenges for Employers

Employers, on the other hand, claim that covering the cost of mandatory paid sick time may force them to cut jobs, reduce employee wages and benefits, or even to go out of business altogether.

Meanwhile, in states where mandatory sick time legislation has already been enacted, keeping track of the varying laws from state to state presents nationwide employers with another challenge altogether. In New Jersey, for example, employees are required to partially fund their own paid leave through a payroll deduction, and must use accrued vacation time before accessing their allotted paid sick leave. In San Francisco, accrual of paid leave is tied to hours actually worked, while in Maine employers who voluntarily offer paid sick leave must follow state regulations regarding the flexibility of its use.

Employers operating in multiple states with varying laws regarding paid leave are charged with the time-consuming task of ensuring each employee is paid in compliance with his or her state's laws. Those who fail to comply leave themselves subject to potential litigation and heavy penalties.

How Outsourcing May Help

For companies who lack the time and capacity necessary to keep up with varying sick leave laws across state lines, outsourcing employment through a nationwide employer of record may provide some much-needed relief. As the legal employer of record, these organizations assume responsibility for paying employees in compliance with their individual state's laws. Employers operating out of one state but wishing to open additional offices in another can put their out-of-state staff on the employer of record's payroll and no longer have to deal with compliance issues regarding that state's labor laws: those responsibilities shift to the outsourcing company. Utilizing the expertise and nationwide capability of these types of organizations can help save businesses time and hassle, while dramatically reducing their risk of noncompliance.<bio>Elizabeth Rice, SPHR, is the President of Innovative Employee Solutions, a San Diego-based company specializing in payroll and HR administrative services for the contingent workforce.
It just makes me sick. I get sicker and sicker everyday. Know why?

I'm constantly getting emails--almost on a daily basis--from people wanting to know why their canary died so suddenly. "He was fine yesterday" they say. Or "He was acting just a little funny yesterday and today he's dead". It breaks my heart every time.

One of the most important things a canary owner needs to know is what a canary looks like when he's sick.

Likely these canary owners would have seen the illness a lot sooner had they KNOWN WHAT TO LOOK FOR. Then they might have been able to give the bird what he needed to pull through. Do you know what to look for? ARE YOU SURE?

If not, don't worry. It's easy to learn.

INVISABLE ILLNESSES

Your canary is a master at hiding his illness. After all, as far as he's concerned, if he looks weak and sickly, he also looks like easy prey.

Now, you know, and I know, that your canary, in his metal powder coated cage, is in no danger of being eaten by a slithery snake or a wily wild cat (unless, of course, you have a Sylvester in your home) but your canary doesn't know that. So, he hides his illness.

But anyone with a little knowledge can see it. You can see it.

And to make matters worse...

Your canary has a super fast metabolism. And that means that whenever he contracts an illness--of any kind--it will speed through him faster than last nights ice berg lettuce. (NOTE: Don't feed your canary ice berg lettuce. It can be very rough on his digestive system.)

With all this in mind, do you think it would be valuable to know what a sick canary looks like? Do you think it be wise to be able to read your birds body language so that you can give him fast treatment before things worsen?

I'll help you out here. The answer is a resounding YES! I urge you...

KNOW WHAT A SICK CANARY LOOKS LIKE.

There are 5 premiere canary symptoms that every canary owner should know by heart. Many more symptoms exist but these are the some of the MOST common.

The Premiere 5 Symptoms

1. Lack of energy

2. Fluffed up feathers

3. Sitting at bottom of the cage

4. Closed or partially closed eyes

5. Lack of appetite

Now that you know the 5 premiere symptoms let's quickly discuss each one.

1. Lack of energy.

This is the hands down, fastest way to KNOW if your canary is sick or healthy.

Canaries are high energy birds so when you see a lack of energy you know there is a problem.

2. Fluffed up feathers

This is your canary's attempt to stay warm. When your canary gets sick he will often feel chilled and naturally will want to retain as much body heat as possible.

3. Sitting at bottom of the cage

Sitting at the bottom of the cage and fluffed up feathers (above) often occur together. Basically, what's happening is, your canary is feeling ultra tired and super "feverish".

He doesn't even want to expend the energy it takes to sit on the perch.

How do you spend your day when you've got a high fever and chills? Wrapped up in a blanket on the couch or in bed? Well, sitting at the bottom of the cage with his feathers fluffed up is your canary's way of staying in bed.

When your canary reaches this point he may be in big trouble.

4. Closed or partially closed eyes

Again, a general sign of listlessness. But this could also mean a respiratory infection, an eye infection, or he might just have something in his eye like a piece of seed hull.

5. Lack of appetite

This is obvious. A sick bird may not eat as much or with some illnesses he may even eat MORE.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Remember, your canary doesn't want you to know when he's sick. And when he does get sick, he gets sick FAST.

These 5 symptoms are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other important symptoms that every canary lover should know about.

Make a point to read and learn all the other important symptoms that your canary may exhibit. You can treat him or even save his life from deadly canary disease if you catch it early enough. <bio>Darren P.D.
Was your latest bout of the stomach flu really the stomach flu? Or was it some other virus that found its way into your intestines? Kid get sick and throw up all the time -- is it always the stomach flu? Actually, it is probably not. It turns out that what most of us think of as the stomach flu is really something else, a gastrointestinal virus. The flu is actually a respiratory illness, everyone just thinks that the stomach flu is that horrible sickly diarrhea. Even some doctors have started calling it the flu, just so people know what they are talking about.

If you have children, then you probably know how much the stomach flu can affect them. In most cases the name of the virus that they actually have is the Rotavirus. This is especially common in small children. This is not the only thing that can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Your child could be sick due to some nasty bacteria that found its way in, or even parasites. If your child is ill for more than a couple of days or is running a fever, it is always better to be safe than sorry, and take your child to the doctor.

A lot of times parents don't want to call the doctor about the stomach flu, but it is okay to if you are worried. That is what doctors are for, to support you and let you know what is going on, so that you don't have to worry about it any more.

The notion that the stomach flu is only supposed to last a day or so is completely off the mark. Most people stay sick with the stomach flu for days -- even a week. It all depends on which kind of stomach flu you or your child gets, because some are just stronger and nastier than others.

Whatever you do when your child has the stomach flu, you need to keep him or her well-hydrated. Lots and lots of water is going to make the stomach flu go away that much sooner, and it is going to keep your child feeling better than they would without the fluids. This is even more important if your child has diarrhea. In this case, it can be downright dangerous if your son or daughter is not getting enough water. You may want to look into getting some Pediasure, as it has the electrolytes your child's body needs when it is dehydrated. <bio>Dorothy Brown writes articles for several web sites, including http://foraw.com and http://mowek.com </bio>

Your pet's health is no doubt very important to you. You don't want your dog or cat to be ill and just down-right sad. Of course not! That's why you need to make sure your pets are in proper health. But not everyone knows how to identify a sick dog or cat -- and that's ok. Many people have pet health questions that they don't have the answer to. Pets are not like humans. Their illnesses are unique to them and unfortunately, they can't tell us exactly what hurts or doesn't feel right. That's why you need to look for signs that your pet might not be feeling just right.

Here are some signs to look for if you think your pet is under the weather.

Just not Him/Herself

One indicator of a sick pet is that he/she is not acting the way they usually do. Often lethargy (tiredness and/or fatigue) sets in when a pet is sick and your dog or cat may shy away rather than run up to greet you. Also if your pet isn't as vibrant or energetic, it's a good indication that something is not right. However, these signs won't answer your pet health questions. They'll just key you in to how your pet is feeling. When a pet is not acting his/herself, feel around his/her body and see how your pet reacts. If something is tender, your pet will definitely react with a "howl" or quick movement. That means a visit to the vet's office is necessary.

Vomit/Diarrhea

Even though pets are not like us, there are some indications of poor health that are similar to ours, such as vomit and diarrhea. These are two clear signs that something's not right with Fido or Mittens. This normally means that your pet has eaten something that has made him/her sick. In this case, it's common to see your pet eat grass. The common belief is that grass helps remove the "bad stuff" from your pets system, acting sort of like a laxative, so you might see your pet eating grass prior to spotting vomit and/or diarrhea. Normally if they just ate something that doesn't agree with them, the vomit and diarrhea will pass. However, if it persists, consult your veterinarian.

Fur Loss

We all know that our pets shed. We see the lumps of hair build all over the house that, at times, can be a bit annoying. However, if you notice large patches of missing hair, something is definitely not right. In some cases your pet might just be getting old and losing hair. However, this is not always the case. In some cases hair loss indicates skin irritations (scratching at itchy skin causing hair to be scratched away), cysts, ringworm, or an infection. Fur loss does raise a lot of pet health questions and since there could be a number of reasons, your best bet it to take your pet to the vet for some pet medications.

Discharge from Eyes and/or Nose

If there's unusual "goop" around your dog or cat's eyes or coming from their nose, you got a sick puppy/kitty. "Goop" normally indicates some sort of infection. If you notice such "goop", clean your pet's eyes/nose and see if it persists. If it does, there's something up and it's time to go see the vet.

Your pet's health should just as important as yours and your family's. The healthier your pet is, the longer he/she will be around to greet you when you come home from a hard day's work.

In many cases, the solution to helping your pet feel better is through prescription pet meds. There are places online where you can get pet medications for less. Before you by those meds for your pet, see what generic and low cost alternatives are available to you online. The web is filled with discounted pet supplies. <bio>For pet advice, other pet health questions, and deals on pet supplies visit http://www.petsuppliesandmeds.com </bio>

Just like when you or any family member is ill, when you find that you have a sick pet medicine is what you'll be needing to give it as well. Your pet is just as much a family member as anyone else, especially if they have been with you through your good times and bad. Some pets might be childhood friends who are now in their old age. Pets need medicine as well, so you'll need to see their wants when they fall sick as well.

It's easy enough to pick up a pet at the pet store and think glibly that you will care for it, then forget all about it as time goes by, but that isn't playing fair by your pet. It too should expect to be cared for and looked after well into its dotage just as you would an older relative. There'll also be special pet medicine that you will need to get for your pet when it falls sick.

Animals are prone to the same whims and fancies of fate that we are, and they also get the same diseases and illness that we do. Not exactly the same but more of the pet version, which is why they need pet medicine. So don't feed your human medicine to your pet as this could be lethal.

If you're interested in administering to pets however, you could of course become a veterinarian. These wonderful people are the shamans of the pet world and will know exactly what pet medicine to administer to your pet when the need arises. If you feel the calling in your blood to look after animals and care for them, then this could be the route you were looking for.

This could unlock your hidden talents and set you on the path of a great career. That is of course only if you enjoy being with pets. If not then this job is definitely not for you. However, if you have a pet, you'll still need to be able to give your own pet the prescribed pet medicine in the right dosages, at the right times.

Look after your pet with great care. You'll never find the same lifelong love and devotion from anyone else that you would from a faithful pet. One pet is worth a thousand people who will only stand by you in the best of times. So remember that your pet needs medicine too, just as we do and give them the pet medicine they need. <bio>Author's Sites: http://dogi-food-recipes.blogspot.com , http://cat-food-recipes.blogspot.com , http://myaroma.blogspot.com </bio>

While traveling by airplane is perhaps the fastest way to reach your vacation destination, it is not without its share of unpleasantness. Being aware of the common problems passengers of airplanes complain about and knowing how to deal with these can surely make your flying experience a little less disagreeable and perhaps even pleasant.

A vast number of those who partake in air travel complain about the lack of space on airplanes. Having to accommodate a profitable amount of people can often cause space limitations on airplanes and dealing with this lack of space is difficult for some. Having an isle seat is ideal if you need the legroom as it allows for stretching, but keep in mind these seats go very quickly. Many people find that traveling with a friend can help to alleviate some of the personal space invasion some people feel.

Many people get air sick on airplanes as well and while this experience can seem utterly unavoidable for those of you who are prone to motion sickness, there are ways to evade the effects of air sickness. Taking a motion sickness drug before hand can help but it must be taken before you get sick. Once sick, the best thing to do is perhaps to try and empty your stomach as this usually makes one feel slightly better. Most, if not all, planes are equipped with andquot;barf bagsandquot; in case you do get sick.

Many other factors on airplanes contribute to the experience being less than enjoyable for some. The air quality on planes is significantly lower than it is at sea level. The air in the pressurized cabin is usually extremely dry and as such can cause great discomfort and possibly dehydration for many of the passengers. Thus it is advised you bring a lot of water with you on the flight and continue to drink it throughout. The temperature can also be rather cold and it is suggested that bringing a light coat onboard would certainly be beneficial. <bio>Interested in Travel?
When you brought your pup home from the kennels you may have had your first experience with a carsick dog. Some dogs take to cars naturally and never have a sick moment. Others are nauseated by the motion of the car and other factors and get sick at the thought of going for a ride. The central problem is one of confidence; he has to be made to feel sure of the situation, and of his surroundings.

Consider it from his point of view. Suddenly he is thrust into a strange -- smelling monster of steel and padding, closed in a small place which immediately starts moving and bumping about with gasoline smells, motor oil and horn noises and the sight of the world rushing by him.

You can start things out right by not feeding him for an hour or so before taking him for a ride. That takes some of the physical load off his system. If you are driving alone, by all means let him snuggle up to you on the front seat, pet him and talk to him. Let him sit with you in the car for a few minutes before you start up. Start off slowly, reassuring him all the while. Drive only around the block the first time so you can get him out before he has a chance to get sick. Then increase the length of the rides until he becomes used to it.

During the introductory rides, keep as close an eye on him as you can and still drive. If he shows any signs of throwing up (usually a sort of slight hiccupping), stop as quickly as you can and get him out of the car. Whatever you do, when he is sick, don't chastise him in the slightest. He simply cannot help it, and any attempt at correction or any disapproval will only confuse him and may make him worse.

Once he has gotten over car -- sickness, or if he started out cured, you can direct your attention to persuading him to ride wherever you want him. Wherever you want him, put him there and make him stay. If he moves, correct him with a firm "No!" and put him back. For car riding, it is essential to make very strict rules and never let him stray from them. Windows are boundaries and he should not stick his head out, he cannot leave the car until you give him permission, these are the two most important rules he needs to learn to stay safe. <bio>Randy Jones and his partner Brent Jones have been in the pet industry for a long time.
If you have ever been in the hospital and had to pay the bills you know how much health insurance can help. It provides people with a way to be able to afford medical costs.

There are many different types of health insurance that provide many different types of plans. Depending on what your state of health is and how much you pay can depend on what you get.

Most health insurance will provide coverage for your hospital bills and will help cover your medicine costs when you get sick. This is pretty much the basics of what is offered in health insurance.

Some health insurance plans will cover dental and eye work. This kind of coverage can end up costing more because it isn't a necessity to most people and it adds more cost to the insurance agency. It does, however, prove to be a great benefit to people when it comes time to use it. The cost of glasses can even sometimes be covered with the eye care insurance.

Another type of coverage is preventive care. This means the insurance agency will pay for medicines that will help keep you from getting sick in the first place. This will sometimes cover mammograms and other disease detection procedures. This can help both the customer and insurance agency in keeping costs down. Remember, it will cost the insurance agency more money if you do get sick.

A lot of health insurance agencies will make you co pay. This is money that you will pay up front to the doctor for your treatment. Sometimes this money is paid back to you by your health insurance provider and sometimes it isn't. It all depends on what your plan covers.

When shopping for health insurance make sure you choose something that is affordable and has good coverage. If you choose a good plan it can help immensely with your medical bills. <bio>Visit BCBSNC NC Health Insurance for affordable, dependable health insurance: http://www.ibdinsurance.com/ </bio>

It is not always necessary to bring a sick family member in the hospital. Doctors do not recommend the admission of a patient in a hospital if the condition is not serious. This is why everyone should at least know the basics about how to take care of a sick individual.

Taking care of someone does not require any tricks. You do not have to be a registered nurse and wear cheap landau scrubs. All you need to have is the willingness and commitment to care for them. Here are some of the things you should keep in mind when taking care of a sick member of the family.
The attention you give to the sick person depends on the severity of his condition. If he is too weak to get up to do things for him, you have to assist him most of the time.

1. See to it that he takes his medicine on time. Check for any allergic reactions as well. Patients usually find out that they are allergic to a certain medicine after taking it. If you see irregular reactions, stop giving him the medicine and go back to your doctor.

2. Give him nutritious food as well. Food is essential in his recovery. Give him loads of fruits and vegetables. Healthy eating will help him recover his energy. It will also strengthen his immune system. Give him plenty of water and juices to drink as well.

3. It is also important that you keep the patient and his surroundings clean. If you are feeding him on his bed, make sure that you clean the sheets afterwards. Ants, bugs, and other insects find food debris very appealing. Clean the patient as well. If he cannot do it by himself, help him. Use a cloth or sponge, and lukewarm water.

4. You have to keep in mind that your patient needs plenty of rest. So if you have kids in the house, tell them to refrain from making loud noises near the patient's room. Comfort is also necessary for him to rest. Make his room as soothing and as comforting as possible.

5. Most importantly, make your family member feel loved. Taking care of someone is difficult. It requires patience and commitment. Ask other members of the family to help. Simple things like preparing the patient's medicine and food can be tiresome if you do it all by yourself.

You do not have to wear cheap landau scrubs when taking care of a sick family member. However, it is important that you wear something comfortable so that you can assist the person better. Remember, you will be performing some tasks for him. You have to prepare his medicines. You also have to help him clean up. It is also your job to ensure that he is comfortable in his room. This means that it has to be clean, peaceful, and comforting. You will surely need the help of the rest of the family members. Your patient needs to feel all the love he can get from everyone at home.<bio>Brent McNutt is actively involved in the subject of Landau Scrubs such as cheap landau scrubs and landau scrub top and enjoys networking with healthcare professionals online.</bio>

Many parents worry everyday that their baby is going to get sick, especially when they are newborns. This worrisome attitude is amplified during the winter time, because the chances of getting the flu or the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are much higher during the winter months. My wife and I have a one year old child that was born last October. This was our first child so we were both very nervous about our son getting sick during the winter. One of the things that we did to prepare for our son's birth was to buy a humidifier for his nursery. I believe that the humidifier was one of the keys that have allowed our son to avoid any significant sickness since he has been born. A home humidifier has many advantages from helping to avoid sickness to extending the life of the interior of your home.

A home humidifier adds moisture to the air either in a room, or throughout your entire house, depending on the type of humidifier that you purchase. This extra moisture in the air will help you feel better and avoid getting sick. The humidifier will help to eliminate a dry nose, itchy, cracked skin, and many allergy and asthma problems. Many viruses that cause sickness can only live in a low humidity environment, so they will die when the moisture level is raised by a humidifier. Also a low humidity environment can weaken your immune system and allow you to become more susceptible to infection.

Home humidifiers can also help to extend the life of many different items in your house. A dry house will cause much more static to occur, which puts all of your electronic instruments in danger. Also a dry house can lead to cracked paint and plaster to occur, and also wood floors to warp. The furniture in your house will also appreciate a more humid environment, because it will allow it to last longer and remain stronger. Home humidifiers are great for your house and everyone in it, and they are also much more affordable than some people may think. <bio>Visit the complete guide to home humidifiers at http://www.humidifierinformation.com/ </bio>

If you're incapacitated for any reason and are unable to work, you may qualify to receive certain benefits from the government to assist you. This is one of a series of guides to government benefits, in which you'll find practical information on the range of benefits that may be available to you.

Statutory sick pay -- this benefit is paid to people who are in employment but are unable to work due to illness. It's currently paid at £70.05 per week for up to 28 weeks of illness, and can be claimed after four or more consecutive days of being sick. (If you're still unwell after 28 weeks, you can apply for incapacity benefit.) To claim statutory sick pay, you'll need to inform your employer (either by phone or in writing -- you don't have to speak to them in person) within one week of falling ill. Some employers offer their own sick pay schemes instead of statutory sick pay. Check your terms and conditions of employment.

Incapacity benefit -- if you have an illness or injury and have been unable to work 28 weeks or more, and/or your statutory sick pay period has ended, you may be eligible for incapacity benefit. The rate increases the longer you receive this benefit, currently going up to £78.50 per week for long-term illness or injury (over 52 weeks of incapacity). When you apply, either online or at your local jobcentre plus, you'll be asked to go for a personal capability assessment and you may need a medical examination by a doctor. If you're deemed eligible, you'll receive flat-rate weekly payments directly into your bank account. You're not automatically barred from working while claiming -- you may be allowed to work up to 16 hours a week or earn a small income, depending on the nature of the job. If you do work, though, you may be required to pay income tax.

NHS costs -- most of the treatments provided on the NHS are free, but there are some that you must pay towards. If you're on a low income or unable to work, you may be able to apply for free treatment. This includes dentistry, prescriptions, travel to and from hospital, eye tests, vouchers for glasses and contact lenses, wigs and supports. Again, you won't be eligible if you have more than £16,000 in savings.

Community care grant -- this is a sum of money awarded to people who need help to live independently in the community. You can apply for it if you are receiving other benefits such as jobseeker's allowance or incapacity benefit. It can help people who need financial support after leaving care, or who need financial support so that they don't have to move into care. In some circumstances, people who have gone through a difficult period in their lives or have suffered a family breakdown may be eligible, and it may also be granted to people who care for someone else. If you have savings of over £500 (or over £1,000 if you're over 60) you may not qualify for the full amount. The grant will be paid into your bank account as a lump sum. You won't be required to pay it back and it isn't considered as income, so it won't affect any other benefits you receive or apply for. Apply for it at your local jobcentre plus. <bio>Benedict Rohan Website: http://www.mortgagenation.co.uk Benedict Rohan works as a freelance finance writer.
As you spend time with your horse you begin to learn his different quirks. You will be able to tell if he is feeling good and healthy and you'll also be able to tell if he seems depressed or a little under the weather. Horses have good days and bad days just like people, but they can't tell you if they are really sick. It is up to us to recognize the basic signs of a healthy horse so that we can recognize when they are sick.

A healthy horse will often stand on all four feet. If they are drowsy they will rest a hind foot and doze off. A horse will never rest a front foot unless they are in pain in the front hoof. The healthy horse also has a shiny coat that lies down nice and smooth. The horse's eyes should be wide open and the inside of the eye should have a pink salmon color. The gums and nostrils should also be a salmon color as well. Limbs and joints should be free of heat and swelling. If you rub your hands down your horse's legs on a daily basis, you will learn to detect heat and swelling easily. You will also be able to compare legs to each other.

A healthy horse will want to eat. Feeding time is a horse's favorite time. They should be ready to eat and begin eating as soon as you drop it in the feeder. The skin of the horse should be moist, but not sweaty. They should breathe quietly when resting. The pulse should also be steady and even. You can feel for a horse's pulse buy holding the tips of your fingers, not your thumb, over the horse's large artery located under the lower jaw and in front of the heavy muscle of the cheek. A mare or gelding will have a pulse around thirty-three to forty beats per minute. Stallions will have a pulse of around twenty-eight to thirty two beats per minute. A young horse may have a faster pulse.

In contrast, a sick horse will show different symptoms. Usually they will have an abnormal attitude. He may lie down at odd times and even in odd positions. If you see a horse sitting back on his hind feet, the horse may be suffering from founder or laminitis. The membranes of the horse will be either pale or yellowish in color. If they are dark red, the horse may have a fever. If blue-red the horse may have a heart or circulation problem. A sick horse will also not be willing to eat. They may sweat and the skin will feel tight. The horse's breathing will also be labored and noisy. These are important signs to watch for in all horses. As you walk down your barn aisle, be sure to notice if everyone seems to be themselves or not. Most sick horses are noticed around feeding times.<bio>Jo Thompson just loves her three horses and loves anything to do with horses.
Dear Adam:

Thank you so much for your tip on how to get my dog to come to me. After only a day of training he now comes right away no matter where I am. I am definitely the Alpha Dog around here.

I do have another problem. He always gets car sick. Yes, I have not fed him and taken him on short trips. But he always gets sick. He also hyperventilates when I get out of the car even to just get the mail. Not sure what to do.

Thanks, Patrick

Dear Patrick,

Car sickness like you've described is 100% psychological, and not physical.

Here are three things you can do to fix car sickness:

#1: Start feeding your dog dinner, in the car... while it's parked in your drive way, with the engine off. After you've done this for a week, start doing it with the engine on. For the first couple of days, he may decide that he doesn't want to eat. Too bad. His food drive will win out over his irrational fear of the car. By the third week, I want you to put him in the car, drive the car to the end of the street and back, then park and feed him dinner. Gradually extend the trips, and if he starts getting sick again, then you're moving through the steps too quickly.

#2: Supplement #1 by playing games with the dog, involving the car. Play fetch, with the car door open. Throw the ball in the car, let the dog hop in, get the ball, and hop out. As you see the dog gradually start to relax, do it with the engine on. Soon you'll be able to take him for a short drive to the park, where you will then reward him with lots of play and fun.

#3: With some dogs, simply taking them on an all day road trip will break them of their fear. They'll throw up and stress for the first half of the day, but by the second half, they start to acclimate. Take lots of breaks at pit stops and take the dog out and play with him. Soon he'll associate that the car represents a precursor to play and fun.

That's all for now, folks! Adam <bio>Adam G.
When you are ill, you probably have zero interest in dealing with your health insurance company. In fact, they are probably the last person that you want to talk to. When you imagine calling them, you probably begin by cursing yourself for choosing an "affordable health insurance policy". Why? Their customer service hours are between the hours of 9-3:30, and the average wait to talk to a customer service representative is 23 minutes.

When you are ill, dealing with a health insurance company probably doesn't seem like it may be on the top of your list of things to do. In fact, if you are ill, you probably should do things like rest, drink plenty of fluids, and concern yourself with a swift recovery.

If you have an individual health insurance policy, you are probably going to have to deal with a lot more paperwork than if you have a plan through your company. An individual health insurance policy is also going to cause you more headaches, and probably cause you to make one too many calls to your health insurance company.

If you do end up calling your health insurance company while you are ill, remember that you are definitely going to need a lot of patience and a cordless phone. This phone is going to be a godsend, especially when you get put on hold for the fifth time, while they decide whether or not you can go to that specialist or if you have to make due with the prescription antibiotic that your doctor prescribed you for your temporary blindness.

While you are waiting on the "affordable health insurance agency" to answer your questions, make sure that you have something to do. You may want to have a book to read, your favorite television show recorded and other things ready to do.

If the health insurance company seems like something that is going to make you feel even worse, you may want to ask your doctor, wife or other family member to deal with your health insurance. Making sure that you get the right answers before you go to the doctor and before you get an expensive treatment is going to save you a lot of troubles and a lot of headaches in the future.

If you think that calling the insurance company while you are sick is worse than being sick itself, there is something that you can do: make sure that you read the fine print and don't have any questions about your insurance policy before you even get sick. This is going to be really important anyways, but if you know about how to get express authorization for an illness and what to do when you are in an emergency situation and need health care quickly.

Calling the health insurance company while you are ill is something that is probably worse than the pain that you are feeling. If you want to know what to do, the answer is probably in the fine print of your policy. If you ask and get the answers to all of your questions while you are healthy, you are going to save yourself a lot of pain and suffering and be able to feel better about yourself sooner, because you don't have to deal with the health insurance company. <bio>Looking for quotes on family health insurance policies?
If you're reading this, I can assume that you are feeling exactly the way I did only a few short months ago: sick of your day job, looking for a way out. After reading this article you may need to look no further.

It's natural to be curious about what else is out there, that will provide you with a comfortable income, while letting you operate out of the comfort of your own home. Or maybe you want to supplement your income to increase your standard of living, or just be able to spend money when you want to without feeling guilty. Any or all of these things are possible.

Curiosity is one thing, but if you're like me, no matter how determined you are, you may run into friends and family members who will tell you that you can't do it. I'm here to say one thing to you:

WHY CAN'T YOU?

There is absolutely no reason. The opportunities on the internet for home business are ENDLESS. You don't need them all, just one or two easy methods that work for you. People may tease you or tell you that it's not possible, but people who don't know me think I'm a genius.

I'm not. I have no idea how to build a website, and internet marketing was a complete foreign object to me. But now, NOBODY is laughing at me anymore or tells me that I can't. This is because I have proved that it can be done. If I can do it, so can you.

So go for it. Work in your jammies. Stay in bed if you're sick without having to apologize to your boss. It IS possible.

You just need to want it. <bio>Written by Ingrid Tiessen, proud owner of her very own website that allows her to work from home!
When a new sales rep talks to someone about their product, invariably what comes out of their mouth is:

andquot;These are the best candles...andquot;

andquot;This is a one-of-a-kind nutritional product...andquot;

andquot;This is based on the best research anywhere...andquot;

andquot;This is the greatest, the next iPod, the next Google (for the business), etc.andquot;

While the rep may believe that and while she feels a tremendous urge to repeat that as often as possible to anyone who will listen, such self serving proclamations do the opposite: They tend to turn everyone off.

(Everyone except other reps in the same company.)

andquot;But,andquot; one gal asked in class, andquot;how will they know how great it is if I don't tell them?andquot;

Ahh.

People don't believe sellers much today. Do you? People are sick sick sick of being sold sold sold.

Even if what the seller says is true, people doubt because they know the sales person makes money when they buy. And of course sales people always say their thing is the greatest, most amazing...

So...instead of acting like the predictable sales type, how about you tell them your authentic story...what happened to you with your product (or service).

(E.g. andquot;I'm introducing a product for someone with achy knees who doesn't want to do drugs or surgery, like the way I used to be. Do you know anyone who might like to know about a product like that?andquot;)

See if there's interest. MAKE NO PROMISES. Instead, try what the Buddha did when he was out telling others about what he had found which had transformed his life:

andquot;Oh monks! just like examining gold in order to know its quality, you should put my words to the test.andquot;

In today's words:

andquot;I don't know if this will work for you or not. But what if it does? Would you like to try it then?andquot;

How would you react to someone who said that?

This 'try it for yourself' approach (instead of screaming to everyone how great his philosophy was), is how the Buddha started, grew and maintained his organization 2,400 years ago. It is still growing all over the world today, including here in the United States.

What if that approach works for you? Would you try it then? <bio>Kim Klaver is Harvard andamp; Stanford educated.
It wasn't all that long ago that we had a massive pet food recall that sent quite a scare through everyone in the United States that owns a dog. It turns out that dog food from many different manufacturers had used a byproduct that was contaminated. This not only made many dogs sick, but it also ended up killing a few dogs. If you're concerned about the safety of your dog when it comes to dog food then here are some of the things that you can look for to make sure that your dog is not getting sick from what it eats.

One of the first things that you will notice if your dog eats something that is bad is that it will become lethargic. Some of you may think that it is difficult to realize whether their dog is lethargic or not, as it may be laid-back in the first place, but you will no doubt notice the difference. You should also look for any signs that its stomach is upset. The most obvious would be if the dog were to begin to vomit, but it could also manifest itself by the dog drinking an unusually large amount of water. Many dogs will also "lick their chops" whenever they are feeling sick. This is just a precursor to the vomiting but it could alert you to a problem earlier.

Although more than likely your dog will experience some sickness from the food that it ate it will recover. The problem, really, is that it could have caused a problem that will manifest itself later in life. These problems could be things such as a kidney or liver malfunction. There is not really much that you can do to ward off this problem if you're going to purchase store-bought dog food. There are, however, some organic foods that you can buy that would help to keep this problem at bay, although even organic dog foods are not immune to every problem.

Most people are alarmed to learn about some of the things that are allowed to go into manufactured dog food. Although almost all dog foods contain the words all-natural or nothing added on the container that is only a half truth. Dog food companies are permitted to put such things as the euthanized bodies of dogs and cats into their food. They can also add food that is pumped full of steroids, and provided they don't add anything to it once it reaches the factory they are well within their rights to put this on a package.

One of the best things that you can do for your dog in this case is to feed it homemade dog food. Of course not all of us have the means or the time to prepare food for our dog, but it is one sure way of making sure of everything that your dog eats.

If you must feed your dog manufactured food then make sure that you pick a company that you can trust, and keep your eye on your dog after it eats to make sure that there are no problems. <bio>To find out more about dog nutrition and some great homemade dog food recipes please visit http://www.barkbarkimhungry.com </bio>

We've all faked a sick day or two in order to get some extra sleep and recuperate after a night of celebration, to get some last minute shopping done, or to pamper ourselves at a local spa. Go ahead, admit it. The boss isn't watching. And while these little discrepancies aren't exactly worthy of major guilt or fear of job termination -- everyone needs a break now and then, right? -- they could cost you some money in the long run. But, sometimes that night out with your old college roommate you haven't seen in a few years is worth it.

All secrets aside, there are times when you actually need to take a few days, weeks, or even months off from work. These are the times when you are actually sick, or even injured, to the degree that you can't make it to work, or be very productive even if you could. To protect yourself against these times, you should consider purchasing disability insurance.

Many employees have family concerns, i.e., bills to pay and mouths to feed. Without a substantial supplemental income during the time they're off work, it can be quite difficult to meet these family concerns.

Sure, there are programs such as workers' compensation and Social Security that can lend a financial hand when you find yourself too sick, injured, or disabled to work for a certain amount of time. And some employers even offer disability insurance for a low cost, or no cost, to their employees. However, each of these kinds of programs are usually very limited in the financial assistance they dole out, and recipients of the financial assistance must meet certain qualifications before they are considered unable to work for a period of time.

Don't rely solely on your employer or government programs to help you and your family in your time of need. Put your family concerns to rest by purchasing a disability insurance policy. <bio>http://www.myquoteguide.com/High-Risk-Home.shtml http://www.ezquoteguide.com/home/ http://www.ezquoteguide.com/car/ </bio>
