When you think about some of the most exciting professions that you have heard of, chances are pretty good that geology never made your Top Ten List. Now of course this comes as no surprise to most as spending 40-plus hours a week looking at rocks probably doesn't sound too appealing. But while geology may not get the adrenaline pumping like being a NASCAR driver or skydive instructor, the fact remains that the field remains challenging and essential to our understanding of the planet on which we live.

While many believe that geology is merely the study of rocks, the truth is that it is far more complicated than that. In truth, geologists seek to uncover hidden passages in one of the greatest stories ever--the history of our planet. And yes, geology does make use of rocks and their formation as a means of interpreting the history of our planet--but it is the story itself that is actually being pursued. The rocks, in that sense, become mere tools in the quest to interpret our planet's history--not the actual point of geology itself. However, the rocks are important too!

A rock is basically any naturally occurring concentration of minerals or mineraloids. Rocks can be classified in three basic manners: Classification via the mineral/chemical composition; Classifying based upon the texture of the rock and its constituent parts; Or, classification based upon the physical processes that helped form the rock.

There are three basic rock types for anyone in geology to identify: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks are formed by volcanic activity. Those that were formed from lava after a volcano erupted are called volcanic while rocks formed inside the earth due to magma are known as intrusive igneous rock. Sedimentary rocks are any that were formed by sediment. Metamorphic rocks are formed by extreme heat or pressure changes within the earth.

Again, while it may seem like geology only concerns itself with rocks, the point is that the rocks tell a story about how our planet came to be the way it is today. Mass extinction events can be tied to volcanic activity as a result of geological studies. The very composition of the atmosphere can also be determined through geological analysis. All of these and many more questions can be answered through geology--and the more we know about our past, the better prepared we are for the future. <bio>Science-Explored.com makes http://www.science-explored.com exciting!
Do you need geology activities? For a classroom? Homeschooling? Something different for an after school program? Maybe you don't know how much you need them.

If you've ever taken a walk in the woods with a young child, you've probably observed a natural love of rocks and minerals. Shape, color, texture...any of these can warrant special notice, a quick pick-up and a drop in the pocket. Once home, those same rocks can spark a memory or an imagination of how it came to be there at just that spot in the path.

A love for the natural world is so universal that if you drop "rocks and minerals" into a Google search you'll find over 9 million websites from countries all around the world--and lots of these are directed to children or made by children. On a short search, I encountered sites by teachers for students, by avid rock hounds for aspiring rock hounds, by colleges, universities, and museums, and by folks who just LOVE rocks!

That's why we recommend starting a geology club.

Geology Club In Ohio

Last year, Kathy Koenig of Cincinnati started a geology club for 7 and 8 year-olds. Being a teacher, she wanted to inspire kids in a subject she knew would be lots of fun. She also wanted to give the students plenty of opportunities for some genuine science work. She planned out a years worth of geology activities and lessons.

The Basic Plan

The club met for eight sessions monthly throughout the school year. Students paid $25 for the year-long club, all of which was to be used to purchase specimens, experimental materials, and geology activities, that could then be owned by the students. Kathy searched hard to find resources who would give her a lot for her money. (That's how she found us at www.fossilicious.com!)

Attendance

Would you be surprised if you found out that this geology club had nearly 100% attendance, even on Friday afternoons after school? That's what happened! Even on the last day of the week, kids were thrilled to spend time LEARNING!

The students worked with:

crystals and crystal growing classification of minerals the practical uses of minerals around the house the rock cycle and the events that lead to different formations how fossils are formed how to identify and dig for fossils and, of course, starting their own fossil, rock and mineral collections.

Careful Planning And a Little Help

While Kathy planned the sessions and led the meetings, parent volunteers were there to support the students in their geology activities. Most of the meeting time was spent in hands on geology activities with real specimens. The extra adult support allowed more of the children to be engaged and successful.

The Results

By the end of the year, students had not only learned a great deal, they had also begun personal collections, nicely labeled and ready for display. These budding paleontologists and geologists were becoming well-versed in the process of excavation and labeling...and they'd had a first-hand experience with creating good field notes. <bio>Find out how you can get everything Kathy used to create a successful geology Club.
The real reason for sketching the geology of the rivers is that it explains their curious course. In their early beginnings they are all mountain streams, such as drain the rainy hills everywhere. They tumble in waterfalls, ripple into pools. Their sides are steep, often narrow enough to be called gorges, of the v-shape eroded by water flowing with a strong head of power through ages too long to reckon. But as they reach the Causses, the character of the rivers changes suddenly. There the long volcanic faults gave them their original beds. The faults are not slopes, however steep, but perpendicular cliffs where the rock has been split apart. Below the cliffs there is usually a tilted screen caused by stone falls; and below that again is the bed worn by the running river.

Limestone is relatively soft, and the river beds are worn down as straight walls, if they do not actually overhang, where the scour of water has hollowed them. And the rivers have worn the lime right down to the ancient hard sea bed. Once they are in the limestone country, the streams do not fall very rapidly; they are fairly near sea level all the way. Their gorges are called "couloirs," "passages," or in the Tarn, "canyons."

The Causses have other perplexing effects upon the rivers. Rain falling on the plateaus does not form streams; it just sinks into the porous rock as though it were blotting paper. Then it works downwards, and collects in the caves and hollows with which the Causses are riddled. Here and there it runs in underground rivers, at the level of the hard base, till it finds an outlet. The bottoms of the cliffs are pierced at intervals by strong springs. Many of these, in the Tarn especially, run into the beds of the rivers themselves. These springs, which are called "resurgences," are very cold, pure, and clear. These fresh water springs are an impeccable vacation spot for upscale around the world cruise passengers looking for a taste of the French countryside.

This has the surprising result that the lower reaches of the rivers are more limpid than the upper waters, which are dark tinted with the soil and debris that color all hill streams. Where the cliffs are withdrawn from the riverbeds, as they are towards the west, the springs furnish the drinking water of the people. A good resurgence in this land of hot dry summers will make a city. Perhaps the best example is the Chartreuse, the fountain of Cahors. In the days of Gaul, and during the Roman Empire, it was worshipped as a goddess-as well it might be, running crystal cold out of the scorching, chalky hill-and it is still carried under the Lot to supply the drinking water of the town.

There is only one thing to be said against the Causse springs. The water has been seeping slowly through lime, and it is hard, while the water of the upper streams is as soft as silk. Even far west of the Causses properly speaking, where the low hills are covered with woodland and fields, the ground has this porous, absorbent nature. So that between the watercourses it is singularly dry, and depends upon a rather untrustworthy rainfall for the ripening of the crops. Indeed the whole region makes the impression of a dry land threaded with rivers.

But the rivers give it a pattern of living waters like the veins in a leaf. Their head springs are not far apart; they spread out to run in all the old valleys of what was once the Basin of Acquitaine, and come together again at the Atlantic, a typical stomping ground for luxury world cruise ships. No wonder the Romans, when they conquered this country of streams, and remembered their own precious, paltry, Tiber, gave it the name of Acquitania, the Land of Waters.<bio>Sarah Martin is a freelance marketing writer based out of San Diego, CA.
Young earth creation science advocate Andrew Snelling proposes in his article "Can Flood Geology Explain Thick Chalk Layers?" that it is possible to lay down massive layers of chalk in a short amount of time (Footnote 1). It is necessary for him to prove this can happen, because the chalk layers must be laid down during the Flood of Noah for him to prove that the earth is young, and that the days of creation were literal twenty-four hour days.

So, what is chalk? For that I refer you to Dr. Snelling's article, and the section so titled. Then come back here and continue reading.

The Hook, Line, and Sinker Tactic

Further down in his article, he aptly describes the problems that must be solved for flood geology to account for these thick chalk layers. The key problem here is the production rate of these organisms. In order to lay down these thick chalk layers, these organisms must be very prolific. In fact, he states the deep ocean floor as the place with the purest calcareous ooze, and its reported accumulation rates range from 1-8 centimeters per 1,000 years and 2-10 centimeters per 1,000 years, depending on the origin of the ooze. At this rate, his obvious problem is to figure out a model which can produce 1,329 feet of chalk in only the time frame of the Flood of Noah (371 days).

To propose the young-earth model, Snelling relies on the research of Dr. Ariel Roth and John Woodmorappe. He does so by slowly upping the ante, by gradually leading us up and up the scale of believability. He starts by Roth's calculations that "the top 200 metres of the ocean would produce 20 grams of calcium carbonate per square centimetre per year, or at an average sediment density of 2 grams per cubic centimetre, 100 metres in 1,000 years." Okay, now we don't have millions of years as geologists propose, but if you do the math, you can create 1,329 feet of chalk (the amount in the cliffs of Dover, England) in only 4,050 years. We are closer to 371 days, but still far away.

These calculations were based on the source of the chalk being foraminifera. Now, Dr. Snelling leads us into the other source of chalk, coccolithophores. Roth, using this source, argues that these organisms can multiply at a rate of 2.25 divisions per day. Now, we are able to "produce an average 100 metre (305 feet) thickness of coccoliths as calcareous ooze on the ocean floor in less than 200 years." Following this math out, we could produce 1,329 feet of chalk in 750 years. We have gone from millions of years, down to 4,050 years, and now to 750 years. We still have a ways to go to get to 371 days.

It is obvious at this point what tactic is being employed by Dr. Snelling. Call it the "Bait and Reel." He presents the problem, then tempts you with the bait. First, he lowers it to 4,050, then to 750 years. What he is doing is gradually reeling in the reader into believing his conclusions. Of course, the average reader with no knowledge of the subject will fall for this tactic 'hook, line, and sinker.' However, if you take the time to step back and look, you realize he has to use this tactic to convince his audience, because a straightforward approach would fall flat on its face. Anyway, let's allow him to continue.

Now we move into the "Blooms" part of his argument. The two supporting geologists "recognize" that coccolith accumulation is not a slow, steady process, but is highly episodic. In other words, they have periods of highly increased production rates, even to the point that near Jamaica you can see "white water" conditions because of the density of these organisms. The various reasons suggested for this condition is "turbulence of the sea, wind, decaying fish, nutrients from freshwater inflow and upwelling, and temperature."

At this point, Snelling claims all of these "reasons" would be present during the catastrophic global Flood, "thus rapid production of carbonate skeletons by foraminifera and coccolithophores would be possible."

He states, "It has been reported that oceanic productivity 5--10 times greater than the present could be supported by the available sunlight." The reported 5-10 times production rate would lower the 750 years to 75 years at best...not to the 371 days required by the flood model. (Notice that although he can get us down to 75 years, the rest is speculation.)

Why Noah's Flood Can't Produce Chalk Layers

Okay, even if you believe this, it is impossible to overcome the following argument.

Let's back up to the beginning of the article. Remember that these chalk beds form when the organisms die, and their calcium carbonate shells start falling slowly to accumulate on the ocean floor. "It has been estimated that a large 150 micron (0.15mm or 0.006 inch) wide shell of a foraminifer may take as long as 10 days to sink to the bottom of the ocean, whereas smaller ones would probably take much longer. At the same time, many such shells may dissolve before they even reach the ocean floor."

What happens when you have a planet full of water? A study of the currents during such an event was done by young-earth creationists Baumgardner and Barnette, and young earth proponents depend heavily upon this study (Footnote 2). You get flow rates at 40 to 80 meters per second, or 131 to 262 feet per second, which equates to 89 to 179 miles per hour currents. These flow rates are located in rotational gyres over the continents. The flow rates over the shallow, continental shelves would also be close to these speeds. Unfortunately for Snelling, these organisms thrive in calm waters, not turbulent waters. You can imagine what would happen to an organism's production rate of 2.25 divisions per day. Division would be the last thing on its mind, it would merely be trying to survive.

The currents cause several more problems. In Jamaica, you can see these placid, calm seas, which are white with organisms. Try running a 90 mile per hour current through there, and see what happens...oops, no more white clouded water. They would be dispersed all over the ocean currents. By this model, it would be impossible to "bloom" in one place...as these blooms would be carried along on the currents, scattering their remains all over the world, instead of the one spot over England that you need for the Dover cliffs. In fact, you would get NO chalk beds anywhere in the world!

Furthermore, remember the statement two paragraphs up, "many such shells may dissolve before they even reach the ocean floor." The size of the larger shells is 150 microns. Using Stokes Law, which determines the velocity at which a particle will settle out of the water and be deposited on the bottom of a fluvial system, a particle of that size would sink to the bottom when the water velocity goes below 1.5 centimeters per second, or 1/30th of a mile per hour (Footnote 3). Please note the Flood model flow rate is at a minimum 89 miles per hour! Therefore, these particles would never fall out of the ocean currents, and would dissolve as they were carried along. Again, the Flood model would yield NO chalk beds at all.

Can you discard the current studies done by Baumgardner and Barnette? Go ahead. The problem is...if you do that, you don't have the erosional forces to supply the material to form all the other sandstones and siltstones! Either way you choose, you can't account for the layers of rock we see using the young-earth model.

Conclusion

According to the Flood model, we should not have any chalk beds. However, chalk beds exist all over the world. The only possible explanation is that they formed exactly as geologists have theorized. It is obvious that the Flood of Noah could not have produced them.

Footnotes

1 "Can Flood Geology Explain Thick Chalk Layers?" Rather than flowing into the sea, the Okavango River empties into the Kalahari Desert =96 a spectacular phenomenon to behold! One of the remotest safari camps in the Okavango Delta is the camp of Duba Plains. The camp is situated on an island surrounded by flood plains that are flooded at different times of year. The area is home to lions, elephants, and buffalo to name but a few of the local residents! Alternatively, for those wanting a few home comforts, the Xigera Camp is situated in the centre of the Okavango Delta with luxury tents. Each room is raised off the ground, with excellent views of the floodplains.

The Moremi Game Reserve situated within the Okavango Delta is a haven for photographic safaris. at the heart of the Moremi Game Reserve is the Mombo Camp. The Mombo Camp has luxurious tents raised high up off the ground to allow wildlife to roam freely through the camp, making for some very close experiences!

The Linyanti Game Reserve is located in northern Botswana on the corners of the Chobe National Park. The Linyanti Game Reserve is home to a wide variety of species, but is best known for its very large elephant population. The King's Pool Camp overlooks the hippo filled lagoons, and is probably the most luxurious camp in Botswana.

The Makgadikgadi Pans provide you with the backdrop of lush scenery for your safari holiday. Local wildlife includes meerkats, springboks, and black-mained lions in the dry season, and flamingos and zebra during the wet season. Located in the Makgadikgadi Pans is Jack's Camp, offering quad biking across the vast salt pans, as well as geology, archaeology, and anthropology to do in between safaris. <bio>For more information about safari holidays in Botswana, please visit http://www.malachitetravel.co.uk </bio>

After the invention of the camera and the growth in popularity of photography, it is only natural that mass production as well as dissemination of photo prints will follow.

Becasue of photography, personal as well as public history, time, and the perception of man himself has notably changed. The idea of privacy became altered as more and more well known public figures and that of the common man were recorded.

Photographs became the unchallenged proof of any experience, event, and even a state of being.

Photography as an art Certifying photography as an art form was a hard thing to undertake during its early stages. It was challenged by artists as well as critics and focused on both the chemical and mechanical facets of photography. They considered photography as a craft and nothing more.

Taking away the restrictions When musuems and art schools finally opened up themselves to photography, the resulting trend was carried up to the present.

Photographers began to set themselves free from the strict impositions made by the norms of the straight aesthetic mode as well as the documentary modes as forms of expressing their individuality.

By the 1960's photography became a major force in visual arts. This art form has been combined with other types of expression including computer imaging as well as mixed media.

Practical applications of photography Photography has many practical applications. It has evolved to become a vital tool used in diverse fields like education, medicine, military activities, and commerce. Science has greatly benefited from photography, including aerial mapping of areas, geology, surveying, archeology, meterology, and anthropology just to name a few.

The digital age With the onset of the 21st century, images can be manipulated and altered in so many ways with the help of digital imaging and computer utilizing techniques. Digital photography started a change in photographic techniques and its nature.

The conventional method of photography involved the passing of light into a lens then to an emulsifying agent or digital photography, where color filters as well as sensors are used to create an image.

There are two kinds of techniques used in digital photography. The first one involves the use of 3 layers of filters. Each one only allows one color like green, another red, and the last one, blue.

These are some of the notable things with regards to modern photography. Photography has been present for more than a hundred years and yet more and more innovations are taking place. Looking at it, one can surmise that more things are yet to come in the world of modern photography. <bio>Learn Digital Photography Now - Is an excellent guide to Digital Photography and finding which camera suits your needs.
When looking to buy fossils to create or add to your collection it is advantageous to have some information about the fossils you want and the dealers you are buying from.

Don't Pay Too Much! You can find fossils at all sorts of gift shops, rock shops, and nature stores. But here's the hitch: BE CAREFUL! The one-of-a-kind nature of fossils sometimes has a price tag--a BIG price tag! You need to know whether your fossil purveyor is reputable and knowledgeable, but most importantly, YOU need to know if they are overcharging you!

A Shopping Trip Brings A Shopping Tip We found ourselves in a jewelry store that sold a very popular and pricey kind of ammonite to be made into jewelry. These ammonites truly are EXPENSIVE! But right alongside the expensive Canadian ammonites, were ammonites from Madagascar. These small ammonites are also very beautiful and unique...but not worth the $300 price tags that they were sporting. In fact, a fair price for them would have been between $50 and $100. This is not the kind of place to buy fossils.

Rule Of Thumb Price Guide When I go into a new fossil shop to buy fossils I start by looking for 2 or three very common fossils, that I am familiar with and have seen for sale in many places. Trilobites, ammonites, orthoceras, and sometimes fossil shark teeth are what I look for. Now there is a great range in quality, size, prices, and rarity for these fossils like any other. What I am hunting are commercial grade, inexpensive, and very common. When I find one or more of these I compare prices with my memory bank of other stores prices for similar specimens. My memory is not what it once was but even I can get a feel for prices on two or three fossils.

The rest is easy; the store fits into 1 of 3 categories:

They are overpriced, and I won't buy fossils here.

The prices are fair. If I see something I really like I may buy it.

The prices are great. I'll probably buy fossils here.

Remember, When you buy fossils, price alone does not a bargain make. The quality, size, and variety have to be similar to make this rule of thumb work.

Interview The Shop Owner That sounds kind of formal doesn't it. This is really an informal process. Just talk to the owner of the shop. Why are they in this business? Often you will find that they have a geology or palentology background. This is a good sign, though there are lots of good dealers out there with no formal training. A passion for fossils, rocks, or earth science is the key component to a good dealer. How long have they been in business? Do they stand behind their sales and sales claims?

The bigger the price tag the more you need to know about your dealer. Some fossil pieces cost thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. This is a major investment! Do some research. <bio>Claudia Mann is a teacher, and a contributor to http://www.fossils-facts-and-finds.com .
The Stone Mountain Park got its name from the Stone Mountain, which is a granite stone rock. The Stone Mountain is located in the suburbs of Atlanta. The height of the mountain is about 513m. Most people believe that the Stone Mountain is the largest granite stone in the world. But, when you compare the Stone Mountain with the El Capitan in Yosemite, you will discover that it is just one fourth the height of the El Capitan Mountain in Yosemite, which is the tallest granite stone on earth.

The Stone Mountain is about 8km, if you want to go round. To reach the top of the mountain easily, use the sky ride. On the top of the mountain, you may find pools of water formed from the gathering of rainwater. At certain periods of the year the visibility of the Stone Mountain is limited because of fog which covers the whole place. There are some tiny Shrimp in the pools of water on the mountain. The tiny shrimp usually dies when the pools of water dries off and you can only find but their eggs, which are to survive when it rains again.

The Georgia State owns the Stone Mountain Park, which is managed by an association called the Stone Mountain Memorial Association. The operation of the park and the different attractions is been done by a corporation called the "Herschend Family Entertainment.

In 1996, some of the summer Olympic events took place in the stone mountain park, some of the events where table tennis and long tennis , Archer, and cycling just to name a few. There is also a museum which operates near the Stone Mountain memorial association (SMMA), called the Confederate Hall, whose objective is to educate visitors on how the Stone Mountain is. That is the ecology and geology. They also educate their visitor on the history of Georgia. Fishing, Picnic site camping etc. are some of the offers provided to visitors.

There are some commercial operators who offer attractions which may include:

1) The scenic railroad, which surrounds the entire mountain and facilitates the movement round the mountain.

2) The sky ride is cable-car which carries people to the top of the mountain.

3) The riverboat which is found in the Stone Mountain Lake.

4) The Antebellum Plantation and Farmyard are buildings which were built around the 1790 and 1845.

5) There is also a broadcast tower, which is found on the top of the mountain and transmits signals to two stations. That is the WGTV Channel 8 and Weatheradio Station.

It will be very good for all the inhabitants of Atlanta and visitors to really visit the Stone Mountain Park, for there are many things that you are going to learn there and even see.

This park remains one of the most important attractions in the Metro Atlanta area. Thousands of people visit the park everyday with their families and friends. Kids especially love the park, because of the many activities designed specifically for them. There's always some occasion going on at the park.
When you look at waterfall designs, there are those that are absolutely beautiful and those that just don't quite make it. So, how do you create a spectacular one?

The key is to make it look as natural looking as possible. Observing those found in nature will allow you to see how those created in home landscapes should look.

Although you will see some water features where the water flows gently over rocks, many have very dramatic waterfall spillways. A waterfall spillway often is created by a large flat rock, which is built up beneath it by smaller round stones. Picture a step with an overhang. The higher up the flat stone is from the level beneath it, the higher the waterfall.

These flat stones might be pieces of bluestone. They also might be thick slabs of fieldstone. There is no reason why you can't mix them as this might occur in our natural environment also. Another aspect of waterfalls in nature is that they generally will have more than one spillway.

The sides of the waterfalls are often made of different sized stones. Larger ones are mixed in with medium, small and even pebble sized rocks.

Plants are usually incorporated into waterfall designs. In the woods, soil deposits in and near the falls would have created pockets for plant seeds to lodge. Plants that are suited to the specific conditions of the area will grow well. If the waterfall is in a damp, shady area, you might find such plants as ferns. If the area happens to be sunny, those plants that like the sun will survive. Plants that are indigenous to the area will be part of the landscape as that is where they grow best.

All of these ideas can be used for various types of waterfalls. One thing that is good to remember is that all waterfall designs look best when it appears that water is tumbling down from a higher elevation. You don't want an unnatural mound sitting there. This is true whether you are creating a waterfall for a swimming pool, pond or stream.

If you are lucky enough to have property that slopes down towards the area you are going to be viewing the waterfall from, you will have the best type of water feature. Sometimes you can tweak your viewpoint to take advantage of this. For example, if your land slopes towards your house, you will be able to see the waterfall clearly from your home. However, if your land slopes towards the rear yard, this is not so. In this case, you might want to add a special sitting area in which you can view the waterfall from.

There are many different stone types and colors. Some are fieldstone, found in the woods. Others come from mines. I mentioned above mixing different kinds of flat stones. Mixing stone types or colors can be done, although the majority should be similar. If you think about mountains and geology, similar stones collect in certain areas. Sizes, however, should definitely be mixed.

These are things that you can mimic when creating your own waterfall. Try to create your waterfall as you might see it in the woods or mountains. It will be more successful this way.<bio>Susan Schlenger is a professional Landscape Designer with a degree in Landscape Architecture.
Forensic science is not just what you see on television shows like CSI but rather the use of actual science to help determine the answer to varied legal questions. There are many different types of forensic disciplines that are used to help police and other officials answer these questions. These include criminalistics, forensic psychology, forensic pathology and others.

Criminalistics is the science used to help understand the evidence in crimes. Evidence used in criminalistics can include biological evidence, trace evidence, impression evidence, controlled substances and ballistics. Biological evidence is usually bodily fluids such as semen and blood. Trace evidence are items like hair and fibers. Impression evidence are items like foot prints, impressions of car tires and fingerprints. Criminalistics is usually investigated in a crime lab. Many cities with very large populations have crime labs within their police departments. These include Miami-Dade, Florida and the famous Las Vegas crime lab.

Forensic psychology is the study of the mind of a criminal. Forensic psychologists usually study the motivations that led an individual to commit a certain crime. Forensic psychology has recently come into the limelight as more and more television shows have started to feature it. These includes CSI, NCIS and Criminal Minds. Criminal Minds especially digs into why a person committed the crime so that they may locate the victim before it is too late. Forensic psychology has also been discredited by some as being interpreted in court as opinion and what might have been going through an individual's mind, not what actually went through the individual's mind.

Forensic pathology is the study of the cause of death. Literally, pathology is used to determine how someone died and the forensic findings are usually used to backup a court case. Forensic pathology has also recently become popular for television shows such as CSI and NCIS. Many of the cases involve a mystery over death.

There have also been many other forensic sciences such as forensic meteorology, and forensic geology, although these are used much less often than other branches of forensic science. Many of them just involve using analytical skills to determine the cause of the events.

As with any science there have been some disagreements over the scientific effectiveness of certain forensic sciences. One of these cases was an experiment by the FBI. Comparative bullet lead analysis was used by the FBI for over 40 years starting when John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. The theory was that each batch of bullets had a specific chemical composition, much like an element on the periodic table, and therefore could be traced back to its original batch or even down to the very box. However, internal studies showed this to be exactly the opposite and the test was finally pulled in 2005.

No matter what you may think, forensic science affects you each and every day. Forensic science allows scientific means to be applied to almost any situation so that there can be a root cause determined. Forensic science in any form is just the answering of a legal question using analytical means. <bio>To learn more about forensic science visit http://www.forensic-career.com.
What is an electron microscope?

Invented by a German physicist named Ernst Ruska, electron microscopes are mostly used in archaeology, medicine, and geology to look at surfaces or layers of objecs. Rather than using light, electron microscopes use electrons to produce images. They have high resolution and can magnify in small detail.

* What is a compound microscope?

Used mostly in biology, compound microscopes have two or more double convex lenses. They produce a 2-D slice image of an object, yet can attain a high enough magnification to see a hair strand. Unfortunately, they do not have excellent resolution, so the image may be blurred. On the other hand, stereoscopic microscopes, as the name implies, provide a 3-D picture of bisected items, like muscle tissue or an organ.

Compound microscopes are the simplest type of microscope and are found in many classrooms. Compound microscopes are operated entirely by hand and use ordinary ambient light from the sun or light bulb. The specimen is mounted between two glass slides, and the microscope system uses a simple series of magnifying lenses and mirrors to bring the image to the eyepiece, much like a telescope.

* What is a stereo microscope?

While a compound microscope provides a 3-D picture, a stereo microscope provides a 3-D picture of bisected items such as muscle tissue or organs. A stereo microscope is a lower-powered microscope with low magnification. Although you cannot make out separate cells, it does allow for closer viewing of the non-microscopic world.

This microscope makes tiny objects gigantic and is sometimes called a dissecting microscope. Inexpensive models of stereo microscopes are available for schools and students. The stereo microscope has a zoom as well as improved optics and lighting and can be used for professional purposes.

* What is a confocal microscope?

A confocal microscope is a step down from those above. It uses a laser beam to illuminate a specimen. Then, the image is digitally enhanced and viewed on a computer monitor. The specimen is often dyed a bright color for a more contrasting image. Unlike compound microscopes, confocal microscopes are controlled automatically with motorized mirrors that help with auto-focus.

* What is a digital microscope?

Made up of a digital camera unit and a controller, a digital microscope is fairly new to microscopy. It utilizes USB technology to produce live images viewable on a computer monitor. A high pixel color CCD and light are built into the camera unit. It makes use of inverted lens design and has a rotatable lamp. The controller has various functions such as display, record, measurement, etc. The digital microscope allows for quick observation, analysis and data processing without much preparation. <bio>Evan Mattensen is editor of http://www.e-microscope.com, the online guide to Microscopes.
Fossil information sites are abundant on the web. But not all sites are created equal. Some sites are scholarly and may be over-the-head of the first-time or casual fossil collector. At the other end of the spectrum are sites that are a collection of links with no real information. Their sole purpose is making money from their google ads. There are plenty of sites in between that offer every form of fossil information you can imagine and for every audience.

Focused Sites The scholarly sites often delve deeply into one fossil information topic. Dr. Sam Gon III's site- http://www.trilobites.info/ shares just about anything you would want to learn about trilobites. His site is easy to navigate because it links logical topics, but also because it has a long list of the topics covered on the home page. Elasmo- http://www.elasmo.com/ covers sharks: fossil sharks, modern sharks, classification and disputed classification. This site is usable by the novice, but has enough depth to bring you back over and over again.

General Sites Sites like UCMP- http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/ approach the fossil information topic from a broad perspective. They have a huge amount of information on fossils. They include fossil-related topics like geologic time and classification (phylogeny) of both fossil and modern species. Fossils-facts-and-finds'- http://www.fossils-facts-and-finds.com/ target audience is teachers and pre-college students. The topics covered relate to both fossils and geologic time, but additionally include tips and lesson plans for sharing the information with students, and there are projects that students can do on their own.

Especially For Kids Since fossil information is often needed by young students, there are sites feared toward short, quality information about specific species. Enchanted Learning- <a href="http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Home.html" >http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Home.html gives a little information about LOTS of topics...not just fossils and dinosaurs. Their approach gives good starter information.

No Help Here Watch out for "links-only" sites. These sites contain long lists of linked sites that MAY contain pertinent fossil information, but you can waste huge amounts of time following these links and never really find what you are looking for. (Of course, that's what these sites WANT you to do, because for every click, they make money!)

Fossil Directories Good niche directory sites, on the other hand, can be of great help. Bob's Rock Shop- http://www.rockhounds.com/ is a good directory of fossil information sites because Bob has looked at the sites and puts a short note about the information you can find at each linked site.

Read the descriptions! With a little scrutiny, you'll save yourself time, avoid the "no information" link sites, and get on to the business of getting REAL fossil information! <bio>For more fossil information visit http://www.fossils-facts-and-finds.com. If you need fossils for classrooms, scouting activities, geology activities, or homeschooling http://www.fossilicious.com offers free shipping, quantity discounts, and a wide selection to fit your needs. </bio>

If you loved adventure books and spent your days locating "buried treasure" as a child, go grab the keys to your RV. There's a new sport on the horizon for Georgia recreational vehicle enthusiasts called geocaching.

Geocaching is an adventure game that relies on a GPS unit and the Internet to help travellers track down caches (the treasures) that others have set up and shared locations for. There are hundreds of cache sites listed on the Internet right now, and your Georgia RV dealer can probably recommend a website to help you get started.

Setting out well armed with a list of GPS coordinates that you'll visit can be a great way to help pass the time on the road. Kids will be thrilled to track down each cache, and it will certainly help keep them busy until you reach your destination. Some caches are more easily found than others. A scuba enthusiast may have left a cache under water, for example, which would certainly qualify as a very difficult find! You'll find plenty of caches located on hiking trails, in parks and at beaches, in fairly accessible spots. Caches will never be buried, placed in a way that disturbs the environment or located too close to a railroad track or roadway.

Treasure in a Cache:

What might you find in a cache? The sky's the limit! Caches might be as simple as a guest book where you can see the names and hometowns of everyone who visited it before you, or as elaborate as a holiday themed box filled with small toys or ornaments. For example, a 4th of July themed cache might include small flags or red, white and blue tennis balls and frisbees, or a Christmas themed cache might be filled with tree ornaments.

Rules of Geocaching:

One of the few rules of the game is that if you take something, you must leave something in its place, ensuring that the cache is never empty for the next treasure-seeker. This applies even to the simple log book only caches; if you enjoy reading what others have written, be sure to leave a tip of your own! Advice about local attractions and restaurants is always appreciated by fellow geocachers.

Getting Started:

So, what do you need to get started? While RV dealers frequently recommend this game to those frequent travelers who are RV or Georgia travel trailer owners, it can be a fun game for anyone who travels. It is necessary to have a GPS system installed in your vehicle, since that's how you'll locate the coordinates of each cache. The Georgia RV dealer that sold you your RV should be able to help you pick the right GPS system for you. Other than a sense of adventure and some small trinkets to leave at cache sites, you don't need any other equipment.

As you begin searching out caches, you might start to notice some that aren't as typical as a simple "treasure chest." Some Georgia RV dealerships have begun collecting lists of the most exciting caches their customers find. Multi-cache locations actually send you along on a scavenger hunt to find the next clue, which will eventually lead you to the final cache. In some areas, a multi-cache can help give you a tour of unique or interesting features of the location. If you have children, don't be surprised to hear your GA RV dealer recommend you search out Earth-caches. In these, you'll find educational information related to geology or earth sciences. Several other types of caches exist out there- part of the fun is finding a new one on your own!<bio>David Porter is the owner of Three Way Campers, a GA RV dealer. As a Georgia RV dealer he is also interested in the Georgia travel trailer industry.</bio>

What do you get when you mix chocolate and wine? In the case of Clean Solar, Inc., you get solar. Silicon Valley Entrepreneur, Randy Zechman, is the founder of City Chocolate Fountains (the largest chocolate fountain rental company in the United States). Jeff Ritchey is a San Jose native and wine guru. He is a wine consultant for Pichetti Winery, San Saba winery, and has two of his own labeled wines. Together, they are the co-founders of Clean Solar, a Silicon Valley solar installer and integrator.

Randy Zechman will readily admit that he is a serial entrepreneur. Just over a year ago, with two successful businesses in his portfolio: City Chocolate Fountains and World 2 Do, Inc., Zechman was ready for a new challenge. Zechman and a friend of eight years, Jeff Ritchey, an award-winning winemaker, regularly attended a monthly Bay Area speaker series with a group of friends. After every speaker they would end up at a local restaurant debating the subject matter of that night's speech, global warming and the health of the earth were often the center of those debates, which resulted in them seeing Al Gore speak at the State of the Valley conference in early 2007.

After seeing Al Gore speak on solutions for protecting our planet, Zechman began to research the solar power industry. Ritchey, while continuing to grow his label, Sensorium Wines, was also showing increased interest in the green movement, realizing that green technology was an ideal fit with his knowledge in geology, winemaking and construction.

Zechman knew that the scientific and construction skill set that Ritchey could bring to the table would be the perfect compliment to his business and marketing skills, which led him to approach Ritchey about starting a solar power company.

Zechman and Ritchey met weekly for 6 months, discussing the in and outs of the business and making sure that their ambitions would not get in the way of their friendship. "We had a heart to heart regarding our friendship versus business. We both believed we could manage both and that our friendship would not get in the way." says Zechman.

"We've been friends for eight years and never thought about getting into business with each other, but this presented the right opportunity. With the market timing, our passion for doing something good, Randy's sales and marketing experience and my technical and construction abilities, we figured it was a natural fit." says Ritchey.

Clean Solar Inc. quickly became a reality and is now the Bay Area's leading solar installation company. The fuel for their business growth is in the form of state rebates through the 10 year, $3.4 billion California Solar Initiative. While silicon is still in short supply, the rebates offer customers a chance to significantly lower the installation cost of a solar power system. Zechman and Ritchey are committed to staying ahead of the curve and being early adopters of new solar technology as it comes on line. "We want the Clean Solar team to stay abreast of the latest advancements in technology, maintain certifications, and educate ourselves in order to provide our customers with the knowledge they need as a solar owner." says Zechman. <bio>Isaac Riggins is a solar consultant for Clean Solar, Inc.
Dowsing, sometimes associated with the word, radioesthesia, is the use of a special instrument to identify or find an object or condition in physical matter. Dowsing is generally associated with finding oil, water or precious metals, but sometimes an object that is missing. To this end, various Dowsing instruments are used- on either a map, a picture or an actual physical location. Dowsing is probably a very ancient practice. There is evidence that Dowsing goes back as far as ancient Egypt and ancient China. Dowsing was reportedly used to find coal during the Middle Ages.

The most popular tools for Dowsing are the "wishing rods," which are often made out of metal these days but sometimes out of wood, as was common in the past- and the pendulum.

Dowsing, in the fast, generally used, wood. Popular woods that were used for Dowsing were hazel branches, generally forked, along with beech, alder and apple. Nowadays, as before, the Dowsing rods, when used, are held in an L-shape with discovery being made when the rods cross each other. Pendulums used for Dowsing are simply generally string weighted with some type of crystal or other type of weight.

Sir William Barrett, a physics professor at the Royal College of Science in Dublin at the end of the century, was extremely skeptical of Dowsing until he became familiar with a dowser named John Mullins, who was hired by the Waterford Bacon Factory to locate underground streams of water. The small forked stick he used for Dowsing almost immediately bore more fruit than the work of various professional geologists who had failed to identify the water source. Later on, Barrett would be one of the main founders of the British Society for Psychical Research and publish the results of his research on Dowsing in the Society's Proceedings.

Classic research on Dowsing was conducted and reported by Dr. Solco W. Tromp, a Dutch professor of geology, who was the director of the Bioclimatological Center in London. His chief book related to parapsychological research was Psychical Physics, a work speaking of the influence of various types of electrical and magnetic field on living organisms. It included the effects of these types of fields on dowsers, which he himself tested in the laboratory. To this end, used a galvanometer with a wooden ring and a coil of wire to create a magnetic field. He found that, although dowsers could not really determine the intensity of the field, they could detect changes in it. He also found that Dowsing in the field, using a pendulum for quicker results, could successfully enable to dowser to detect different types of magnetic anomalies

Theories of Dowsing vary, but it is often supposed that the Dowsing instrument conveys to the psyche of the dowser a subtle energy detected around the object in question. So a field of energy, perhaps still unknown to modern science, is postulated to be the cause of the phenomenon. For those interested, there is still an American and a British Society of Dowsers. Their addresses are: The British Society of Dowsers, Sycamore College, Tamley Lane, Hastingleigh, Ashford, Kent, TN25 5HW, England and The American Society of Dowsers, Inc., Danville, Vermont, 05828. <bio>Sophie Chamberlain is the author of the acclaimed Ultimate Paranormal Secrets.
Learning doesn't have to be put on hold just because school's out! Your beach family vacation can be full of fun and exciting learning experiences for your children. When the kids get tired of building sand castles and playing with sand molds, try a few of these popular ideas for a fun and memorable summer vacation that educates!

Fun Beach Games Besides the traditional beach toys and games your children already love, try a few of these new twists on old summer favorites.

Beach Geology Use a magnifying glass to investigate the sand and shells you find at the beach. Compare dry sand grains with wet and explore the various lines and small creatures that may be on your shells. Collect a variety of shells and have fun sorting, matching, and comparing the shells.

Beach Darts Draw a large dart board in the sand, assigning points to each section of the board. Use the seashells you have gathered to play darts on the beach. Keep track of everyone's points and set a certain number of points that must be reached to win the game.

Squirtball Divide your family into two equal teams and give everyone a big water gun completely filled. Draw goal lines in the sand behind each team and place the beach ball in the center of the lines. Each team should try to squirt the beach ball across the other team's goal line, keeping the ball away from their own goal line and without using any hands or feet.

Making Fresh Water at Sea Collect a small amount of water from the ocean in a large bowl. Place a small, plastic cup in the center of the bowl. Make sure the cup is not taller than the bowl, but is taller than the water line. Cover the bowl and cup tightly with plastic wrap and place a heavy rock or shell on top of the glass. After a few hours in the sun, the water will begin to evaporate, creating condensation on the plastic wrap and then filling the cup with fresh water while the salt is left behind.

Creative Beach Crafts

Footprints in the Sand This is a simple and fun way to capture a lasting memory of your summer vacation and all you need is a beach and plaster of Paris. Make a deep set of footprints in the soft sand near the edge of the water, at least an inch deep. This works well just after the tide. Fill the footprint with the mixed plaster and wait about half an hour. Gently dig out the cast and lay it upside down in the sun until completely dry.

Beach Treasure Display Another fun plaster of Paris craft that is a wonderful way to save all those shells and beach treasures in a decorative, long-lasting display. Pour a small amount of beach sand into the bottom of a pie tin and arrange your favorite beach treasures into the sand. Fill the container with plaster of Paris and let it dry at least 24 hours before removing your seaside showcase.

Shell Paintings This is a fun activity to do on your vacation or is a great way to remember your trip when you return. Collect a variety of seashells that have room for a picture inside. Light colored, clamshell types work best. Clean the shells and let them dry. Paint your favorite seascapes inside the shell with acrylic paints. <bio>For more tips and information about Baby Einstein CDs, check out http://www.thekidstoystore.com. </bio>

The oil and gas industry provides three quarters of the UK's primary energy alone and globally it is responsible for more energy output than any other fuel production areas. There are many changes coming about in the oil and gas industry as a direct result of this constant demand, with new means of sourcing oil and gas being looked at every day on a global perspective. The increased demand and the limited supply of both these fuels means the oil and gas industry has many difficult challenges ahead in the next decade and beyond, making it a very interesting sector to break into.

Oil and gas jobs represent a huge part of the job market in the UK, with positions ranging from customer-facing roles in public relations to commissioning jobs and project management jobs in the global arena. Ensuring a safe supply to those countries dependent on oil and gas for their economic prosperity is a difficult challenge the oil and gas industry has to face up to with depleting supplies and more countries becoming more dependent every day. Perhaps unsurprisingly this has led to a greater number of project management jobs in smaller countries where the emphasis is on working with the people and securing their future in terms of cleaner and sustainable fuel production.

Whatever your discipline, from engineering to geology and exploration engineering, there is a position within the oil and gas industry to accommodate your skills. Most oil and gas jobs will require a basic understanding of the challenges faced by the industry today and some will form a platform for the beginnings of solutions to those problems. Becoming part of the solution to a global problem is the toughest challenge the industry has ever had to face is what makes starting a new career in the oil and gas industry appealing to many.

Providing an oil and gas supply to consumers throughout the world may involve a great deal of traveling to ensure supply is reliable and clean. Depending on your role, it could also involve working in harsh environments such as drilling jobs offshore in the North Sea to supplying energy onshore to meet the high demands of the UK alone.

The main areas of work within the oil and gas industry are:

Exploration drilling and production
Construction jobs and fabrication
Engineering and research
Installation piping jobs and maintenance jobs
Equipment supply

Each of these areas has a wealth of positions available. Having a degree in your chosen area of work within this industry will of course stand you in the best stead as so many vocational degrees involve practical training and experience. Whether you're looking for a project engineering job or a mechanical job, a background in engineering will stand you in good stead in the oil and gas industry and give employers the confidence that you are able to meet the needs of this global sector. However, even without an engineering or related qualification, there are now many ways to enter into the oil or gas sector than ever before, and those with people management skills are as welcome as those who have previously been involved with installation and piping jobs in unrelated industries.

Working towards alternative solutions for the replacement of fossil resources, sourcing cleaner energy production methods which respond to climate change and finding methods of extraction which are secure and respect the area being mined are all aspects of the nature of the industry. Changing to meet the needs of the consumer and protecting the planet are both relevant considerations in industry's recruitment drive with an increased awareness of production alternatives and their impact becoming number one priority on most companies lists.<bio>Duncan freer - Director - Oil and Gas Jobs Search is a job site dedicated to the specific needs of candidates who work in the Oil and Gas industry.
