Gastroenteritis, also described as inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, is a sickness of fever, diarrhea and vomiting caused by an infectious virus, bacterium or parasite. It typically is of acute onset, usually lasting less than 10 days and self-limiting. Every so often it is referred to just as 'gastro'. It is often named the stomach flu or gastric flu even though it is not related to influenza.

If only the inflammation is found in the stomach, the term gastritis is used, and if only the small bowel is affected it is called enteritis.

Bacterial causes Bacterial causes are less common in developed countries. Campylobacter jejuni is responsible for 5-10% of all cases, whereas Salmonella species, Shigella species, and various pathogenic types of Escherichia coli is accounted for a tiny percentage.

In the developing world enterotoxigenic, enteropathogenic and enteroinvasive E. coli are essential due to the sheer number of cases, whereas Shigella causes debilitating sickness and has increasing resistance against low-priced and readily available antibiotics. Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae is one more important cause of acute diarrhea sickness and following death in the developing world.

Viral causes Viral causes are the most common of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in children less than 5 years of age, in both developed countries and developing countries. Rotavirus group A (up to 50% of the cases), noroviruses (the most common cause of outbreaks of AGE in all age groups), adenoviruses type 40 and 41, astrovirus, and finally sapovirus.

Parasites An outbreak of Giardia lamblia can cause dehydrating diarrhea in infants, and Cryptosporidium is known to cause 1-4% of cases of acute diarrhea in hospitalized infants.

Epidemiology Worldwide diarrhea caused 4.6 million deaths in children in 1980 alone, and most of these in the developing world. This figure has now come down considerably to approximately 1.5 million deaths yearly, mainly due to global introduction of correct oral rehydration therapy (Victora et al 2000).

The commonness in the developed countries is as high as 1-2.5 cases per child per year and a major cause of hospitalization in this age group. <bio>Much more information about Gastroenteritis http://www.Gastroenteritis-e.com on this website. It is also known as stomach flu. It can be caused by an infection, virus, bacterium or parasite. These viruses can lead to condition like fever, diarrhea and vomiting. The different viruses that cause gastroenteritis are rotavirus, adenoviruses, caliciviruses and astroviruses. The signs and symptoms of gastroenteritis may vary depending upon the individual. It is very important that your doctor makes the proper diagnosis before writing down the prescription.

This condition may not cause too much harm if proper care is taken. You body takes quite a toll due to diarrhea and other symptoms. Without proper care it can be get severe. Adults as well as kids are not spared by this inconvenience. Gastroenteritis can be contagious and can spread from person to person. The contamination of drinking water is one of the reasons for trouble. Unhygienic food and unhygienic conditions of maintaining the food causes problem too. Sea food in the likes of shellfish reaped in polluted water and handled by unhygienic people creates problems.

One of the common symptoms of gastroenteritis is severe diarrhea. It is the main reason for dehydration. You also suffer stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and fever. Due to this continuous pain there is loss of appetite, fever or chills. You also endure body ache as well as stiffness of your joints. There is lack of stool control. Dark color urine should ring a bell. It is very important that you wash your hands once you have been to the bathroom. By keeping your kitchen spic and span you can avoid any causes of infection. Drink boiled or bottled water. Avoid food which is half-cooked especially seafood.

Children are the common patients of gastroenteritis and special care has to be taken for that. Due to loss of fluids it is very important that the child remains dehydrated by constant intake of fluids. Take plenty of rest. Consume at least eight to ten glasses of water everyday. Avoid spicy food and eat more of vegetables. Plain and simple food may go a long way.

Some Home Remedies

You can make concoction by using eight ounces of fruit juice (one, which won't escalate your gastro problem), 1/2 tsp honey, corn syrup and a pinch of salt, mixed in a glass. In another glass you can have 8 ounces of purified water with 1/4 tsp baking soda. Drink alternately from each glass until it's over.

Having clay mixed with water is very good to prevent gastro.

Campfire ash used also helps due to its astringent and drying-up effect when brewed in tea.

Blackberry root when made into a tea can assist with your gastro problem.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautionary measures while following instructions on the home remedies from this article.
What is Gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the lining of the intestines caused by a virus, bacteria or parasites resulting in leakage of fluid from the cell into the intestine(diarrhea),abdominal pain and vomiting.

What are the causes of Gastroenteritis?

Viral Gastroenteritis:

The most common cause of Gastroenteritis is Viral.

Rota virus is the leading cause among children 3 to 15 months old and the most common cause of diarrhea in children under the age of 5 years.

Adenovirus occurs mainly in children under the age of 2 years.

Caliciviruses especially the norovirus cause infection in people of all ages.

Astrovirus also infects primarily infants, young children, and the elderly.

Bacterial Gastroenteritis: The most common cause is the E. coli bacteria, usually mild with diarrhea, abdominal pain and occasional vomiting. It rarely cause fever.

Salmonella, Shigella ,Vibrio cholerae, are more serious bacterial infection causing diarrhea and high fever.

Parasitic Gastroenteritis:

Most common is amoebic dysentery, common in India and Africa. Other parasitic infection are giardiasis and threadworms.

What are symptoms of Gastroenteritis?

The main symptoms of gastroenteritis are

1. watery diarrhea 2. abdominal pain 3. vomiting 4. headache 5. fever. 6. loss of appetite and energy

Symptoms usually appear within 4 to 48 hours after exposure to the germ and last for 1 to 2 days, though symptoms can last as long as 10 days.

How is Gastroenteritis transmitted?

Gastroenteritis can be highly contagious. The germs are commonly transmitted by people with unwashed hands.

People can get the germs through close contact with infected individuals by sharing their food, drink, or eating utensils, or by eating food or drinking beverages that are contaminated with the germs.

Noroviruses in particular, are typically spread to other people by contact with stool or vomit of infected people and through contaminated water or food especially oysters, prawns, crabs, lobsters, cockleshells from contaminated breeding waters.

How is the diagnosis of Gastroenteritis made?

Doctors generally diagnose gastroenteritis based on the symptoms and a physical examination. Your doctor may ask for a stool sample to test for rotavirus or to rule out bacteria or parasites as the cause of your symptoms.

How is Gastroenteritis treated?

Most cases of viral gastroenteritis resolve without specific treatment. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections.

The primary goal of treatment is to reduce the symptoms which may include an antispasmodic drug to stop abdominal cramps, medicine to harden the stools such as kaolin and slow down the intestinal movement (lomotil or loperamide).

Prompt treatment may be needed to prevent dehydration which is the loss of fluids from the body. Important salts or minerals, known as electrolytes, can also be lost with the fluids. Dehydration can be caused by diarrhea, vomiting, excessive urination, excessive sweating, or by not drinking enough fluids because of nausea, difficulty swallowing, or loss of appetite.

The symptoms of dehydration are excessive thirst dry mouth little or no urine or dark yellow urine sunken eyes severe weakness or lethargy dizziness or lightheadedness

Mild dehydration can be treated by drinking liquids. Severe dehydration may require intravenous fluids and hospitalization. Untreated severe dehydration can be life threatening especially in babies, young children and the elderly.

The following steps may help relieve the symptoms of gastroenteritis.

1. Allow your gastrointestinal tract to settle by not eating for a few hours. 2. Sip small amounts of clear liquids or suck on ice chips if vomiting is still a problem. 3. Give infants and children oral rehydration solutions to replace fluids and lost electrolytes. 4. Gradually reintroduce food, starting with bland, easy-to-digest food, like porridge or soups. 5. Avoid dairy products, caffeine, and alcohol until recovery is complete. 6. Get plenty of rest.

How is Gastroenteritis prevented?

You can avoid infection by:

1.washing your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds after using the bathroom or changing diapers 2.washing your hands thoroughly for 20 seconds before eating 3.disinfecting contaminated surfaces such as counter tops and baby changing stations 4.Avoid eating or drinking foods or liquids that might be contaminated <bio>Kenneth Kee email: kwk481@gmail.com website: http://www.kennethkee.com http://kennethkee.blogspot.com http://dotkee.110mb.com http://mirage800.110mb.com http://success.myweb.io http://mirage.myweb.io Profile: A newbie to world of internet marketing. It refers to a chronic condition that is characterized by the presence of abdominal pain, change in bowel movements, cramping, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. It is considered a serious intestinal disease that can lead to much higher risks if left untreated.

* What causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

As with many syndromes that affect the human body, the real cause of IBS is not yet known. There are no medical studies so far that explain the root of the problem, although some claim that the symptoms of IBS are caused by muscle contractions in the bowel wall. However, medical specialists continue their studies to discover the exact cause of this syndrome.

* Are there other conditions related to IBS?

Yes. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is closely related to other conditions like gastroenteritis. This is a condition where the stomach and bowel linings become inflamed. It is believed that IBS develops after the occurrence of gastroenteritis.

In addition, it was also found that about 60% of the people with IBS suffer from Fibromyalgia Syndrome or FMS. This is a disorder located in the musculoskeletal system.

Candidiasis, also called yeast or thrush infection, is also a condition related to IBS.

* How common is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Frankly, Irritable Bowel Syndrome is extremely common. Anyone can be affected with it, but only a small percentage of people with IBS are treating the disorder. This is a widespread disease in most of the developing countries in the world.

* How serious is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

The fear of IBS can lead to more serious problem, so it should be treated early on. It is true that Irritable Bowel Syndrome is closely associated with more chronic symptoms but it will never develop into a cancerous disease or a life-threatening disorder.

It is more important for people with IBS to focus on its immediate treatment rather than feel the devastation that will make the condition unrelieved. Tests must also be conducted for an early diagnosis.

* What is the impact of IBS?

IBS is a common intestinal problem, particularly for women. It is said that the true impact of Irritable Bowel Syndrome can range from a mild nuisance to severe debilitation. It affects many factors in a person's life such as the emotional and social aspects. The difficulty arises when the person finds it difficult to overcome the symptoms that lead to impairment of their everyday activities. <bio>Ilene Trevore is editor of http://www.IBS-Tips.com, the online guide to Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Introduction

It is not clear what causes IBS, although there are three main theories - food intolerance, post infectious IBS, and psychological factors.

Food intolerance

Firstly, a food intolerance can produce irritable bowel symptoms, but not every person with IBS will have food intolerances.

That said, for many people their IBS could be caused by a food intolerance, which begs the question - if it is a food intolerance, is it still IBS?

The thinking is simple. In some people IBS may be caused by an intolerance to a certain food, in much the same way as lactose or gluten intolerance. In fact it may well be a lactose or gluten intolerance causing the problems.

A food intolerance should not be confused with an allergy:

A food allergy is an immune system response. It occurs when the body mistakes something as harmful and creates antibodies to fight it. It is these antibodies which cause the symptoms.

Food intolerance is a digestive system response which occurs when the gut can not effectively process certain foods for some reason. For example: lactose intolerance is caused by a shortage of the enzyme lactase in the body which s used to break down the sugar in cows milk. Lactose intolerance often produces similar symptoms to IBS.

Post infectious IBS

Around 20% of people will have post infectious IBS, which comes on after a nasty bout of viral gastroenteritis. A large Spanish study showed that people who had gastroenteritis were twelve times more likely to develop IBS in that subsequent year than others.

The thinking is that the gastroenteritis has killed off all the established good bacteria which live in the gut and help protect the gut and maintain healthy functioning. With the good bacteria gone it leaves an opportunity for non-regular bacteria consumed in our food to get a foothold in the gut and cause the problems.

Psychological factors

Many people with IBS connect the start of their symptoms with a major traumatic event such as bereavement, redundancy, divorce etc.

In addition a very high percentage of people with IBS state that when experiencing IBS symptoms, day-to-day stressful or emotional incidents amplify the IBS symptoms, most notably pain and diarrhoea.

This suggests that there may be an emotional or psychological explanation for IBS in some people.

IBS Symptoms

Introduction

The main symptoms of IBS are: recurring abdominal pain and discomfort accompanied by diarrhoea, constipation or a combination of both, lasting for more than three months in a twelve month period. Many people also experience gas and bloating.

Some people will have short term symptoms, whilst others will have symptoms which last longer. Some people experience mild symptoms, and manage to get on with their life without visiting their GP, whilst others symptoms can be extreme and affect quality of life and require medical advice and treatment.

Here is breakdown of the main IBS symptoms:

Pain and discomfort

* IBS pain can be mild to extreme and occur in different parts of the gut. The pain is often described as stabbing, cramping or spasming.

* The pain may get worse before you need the toilet, and is often relieved to some degree after passing a motion.

* In addition to acute pain many people with IBS have a more constant feeling of discomfort in their gut, which is often described as a 'heavy' feeling.

Gas and bloating

* Many people with IBS experience gas, bloating, and extreme gurgling, and this is often one of the main causes of pain.

* It is not clear if some people with IBS produce more gas for some reason, or whether it is simply a sensitivity in the gut caused by IBS which causes pain when normal levels of gas build up.

Stools

* Depending whether you are experiencing constipation or diarrhoea, stools can range from small hard and pellet like right through to liquid diarrhoea.

* Some people with IBS have a feeling of not emptying their bowel after going to the toilet.

* Some people may have mucus mixed with the stools.

* Some people have an urgency to get to the toilet quickly with very little warning.

IBS is often broken down into three categories based on the predominant symptoms:

IBS-C: constipation being the main symptom

IBS-D: diarrhoea being the main symptom

IBS-A: alternating constipation and diarrhoea

Important note: blood in your stool is not a symptom of IBS.
If there is one body organ that does not really serve any purpose that would be the appendix. It's a big question why it exists. Despite the many theories surrounding the probable purpose the appendix serves, its purpose still remains a mystery.

Unfortunately, despite its apparent uselessness, appendicitis can cause your death. When you develop appendicitis, you will need to undergo an operation to have it removed. Curiously, however, once the appendix is removed, you will live just fine. In truth, this is not surprising considering that the organ does not seem to serve any purpose. So, how do you know if you are exhibiting symptoms of appendicitis?

The Primary Symptom -- Severe Abdominal Pain

First of all, appendicitis occurs when your appendix becomes suddenly swollen for no obvious reasons. It can happen to you regardless of your age or sex; although, it occurs more in people between the ages of 10 and 35.

The first thing that you will likely experience if you are suffering from appendicitis is abdominal pain. It is nowhere near the kind of pain you will suffer with indigestion or gas. People suffering from pain caused by appendicitis will likely rate their pain between 8 and 10 and even over 10. Indeed, this pain can be debilitating. People usually find relief by lying on their side and bending their knees upwards toward their chest. It's highly unlikely that you can relieve the pain by taking painkillers. Only surgery can effectively relieve and remove the pain.

The symptoms of appendicitis usually start with a localized vague abdominal pain. Usually, the pain would start somewhere near the belly button or the navel. Over 24 hours, this pain will eventually move to the lower right abdomen.

Other Symptoms of Appendicitis

The classic symptoms include nausea, lack of appetite, vomiting and fever. Not all people suffering from the disease, however, experience all these symptoms. In fact, there are people who suffer the debilitating pain without any other accompanying symptoms of appendicitis. Commonly, however, people suffer only a combination of symptoms.

The full-blown symptoms of appendicitis take time to develop. In fact, it may take up to 48 hours or 2 days for you to develop signs indicating appendicitis. During this time, you may experience varying degree of pain. You may lose your appetite and you may experience bouts of vomiting. There are people who have reported diarrhea or constipation while many also reported no change in their bowel movements or habits.

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to diagnose appendicitis in its early stages since there are other stomach conditions that manifest similar symptoms. People suffering from gastroenteritis, for one, suffer from stomach and intestinal inflammation. They also suffer from severe abdominal pain. Because the symptoms are fairly similar, there are many people actually suffering from appendicitis who leave the hospital with a diagnosis of gastroenteritis. These cases are especially common in children and the elderly. Often, they have fewer symptoms of appendicitis, so it is far more difficult to diagnose them properly. Unfortunately, misdiagnosis often leads to severe complications.

The appendix does not serve any purpose, but appendicitis is not something you can ignore or trifle with. If you are showing symptoms of appendicitis, you should visit your physician immediately. There is no cure for the pain except surgery.<bio>Peter Garant is writing articles about Appendicitis Symptoms and Appendicitis Pain for a site about Appendicitis.</bio>

Researchers have yet to find a specific cause for irritable bowel syndrome or IBS. It is known as a functional disorder, which means that the way the bowel words is affected. However, there are yet to be found any physical abnormalities that can explain the symptoms.

One theory that has been proposed is that people who have IBS have a large intestine, or colon, that is quite sensitive and reactive to both stress and certain foods. It is thought that the immune system may also be involved.

Symptoms of IBS seem to be caused by contractions of the muscle in the bowel wall some researchers think. These contractions are thought to be stronger and more frequent in people that have IBS. The contractions seem to worsen after eating certain foods and in stressful situations. If a person is intolerant to certain foods such as dairy products, tea and coffee, it may trigger symptoms.

IBS may often develop after a bout of gastroenteritis which is an inflammation not only of the stomach but also of the bowel linings. This often causes diarrhea and sickness. An infection with a bacteria or virus may be the culprit here as well as food poisoning.

These are some other causes of IBS which you may want to think about:

Normal movement, or motility, may be absent in the colon of someone who has IBS. The motility can be spasmodic, also called a spastic colon or it can even temporarily stop working. Spasms are strong and sudden muscle contractions that may come and go periodically.

The lining of the colon which is also known as the epithelium is affected by both the immune and nervous systems. It regulates the flow of fluids both in and out of the large intestine or colon. In a person who has IBS, the epithelium seems to work properly.

However, when the contents inside of the large intestine move too quickly, the colon is not able to absorb the fluids. This results in watery stools. In other people, the movement inside of the colon is much too slow.

This causes any extra fluid to be absorbed, and thus the person suffers from constipation.

With a person who is suffering from IBS, their colon may respond very strongly to certain foods or to stress that would normally not bother other people.

Recent research has found that serotonin and normal gastrointestinal functioning are linked together. Serotonin is a chemical, or neurotransmitter, that delivers messages from one body part to another. Approximately 95% of the serotonin in a person's body is found in the GI tract, and the other 5% is located in the brain. Cells which line the inside of the intestines work as transporters and work at carrying the serotonin out of the gastrointestinal tract. People who suffer with IBS do not have as much receptor activity as normal people, and this causes a build-up of serotonin in the GI tract. As a result, people with IBS suffer from problems with bowel movement, sensation and motility since they have more sensitive pain receptors located in their GI tract.

Researchers also have reported that IBS may be linked to a bacterial infection in the GI tract. Studies have been documented that people who have had a bout of gastroenteritis may sometimes develop IBS.

These are the main causes of irritable bowel syndrome. If you think that you may be suffering from this disease, it would be wise to consult your physician. <bio>Article written by Jessica Bradbury, she has a site dedicated to bottom line information on IBS at http://www.ibs-information.com </bio>

It is well known among those individuals who have been diagnosed with Chrohn's Disease, as well as their family and their doctors, that there is no known cause of Crohn's Disease. Even so, there are many theories as to what triggers the disease, although they are just theories, and have not been adequately proven at this point.

One of the most common theories on the cause of Crohn's Disease has to do with the reaction of the body's immune system to certain viruses. The theory is that the immune system reacts to a virus or bacteria within the digestive system. Some evidence shows that the body protects itself from a perceived threat to the digestive system by causing inflammation within the intestines. Those who suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's Diseas and Ulcerative colitis do typically show a high instance of abnormalities in their immune systems. Doctors, however cannot confirm at this time whether the immune system abnormalities are a cause of the diseases, or a result of them.

There are a number of other factors that may figure strongly in the role of the development of Crohn's Disease. Infection, family medical history, genetics, diet, immunological factors, measles, MMR vaccine, and psychological factors all may all play a role in the development of Crohn's Disease. Some people develop Crohn's Disease after suffering gastroenteritis, yet the infection itself is not regarded as a cause of Crohn's Disease.

There have been studies that show that genetics may play a role in the cause of Crohn's Disease. Statistics show that if one member of the family suffers from Crohn's Disease, then there is an increased chance for other family members to develop the disease as well. First degree relatives, that is, parents, siblings, or children of an individual with any Inflammatory Bowel Disease will have a much higher risk of developing such Crohn's or other Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. The risk of developing Crohn's Disease is increased with identical twins.

Diet is another area that is looked at as a cause of Crohn's Disease, since it is often used by patients to address the symptoms of Crohn's Disease, and dietary changes will be inexpensive. Treatments involving an individual's diet vary in their results, but there is a consensus that certain foods should be avoided. Even though a particular diet doesn't cause Crohn's Disease in and of itself, there may be certain foods in the diet may trigger symptoms of Crohn's or make the symptoms worse.

Some vaccines, particularly measles and MMR vaccines have been looked at recently regarding a link between the vaccines and various diseases including Crohn's. There is not enough evidence, however to link these vaccines to Crohn's disease.

Psychological factors are not the cause of an Inflammatory Bowel Disease such as Crohn's disease and that there is no hard proof to support the link between those psycholigical factors and the disease itself. However, the stress of living with such a disease can make the symptoms of Crohn's Disease worse.<bio>Visit Digestive System Disorders for more information on Crohn's Disease and other digestive problems.</bio>

When your baby arrives, the days will be so much happier. However, you must also be prepared for bad situations.

Your newborn baby is very likely to face some of the common health problems in her early days. Moms usually get overly worried and panic finding their precious newborns sick.

Below are some of extremely frequent problems your newborn baby may face, with some easy, simple and effectual solutions to them.

1. Problem: Sticky Eyes Most of the babies suffer from this problem, wherein a thick, sticky, yellowish mucous is secreted from baby's eyes.

Solution: Sticky eyes are generally the outcome of blockage of lacrimal ducts (the tear ducts) in the eyes. Babies have fine lacrimal ducts so they are blocked easily.

All you need to do is dab some cotton wool in slightly warm, sterilized water (water boiled for 20 minutes and then cooled) and massage the corners of your baby's eyes. Use different cotton wool for each eye to prevent cross infection. You may even consider applying cool tea. Place a tea bag in boiling water and let it simmer for a couple of minutes. Let the water cool down and then wipe the corners of the eyes using cotton wool. You can also gently massage around the eyes with your finger to help free the tear ducts.

2. Problem: Spitting up and Vomiting

Solution: First, it is important for the parents to understand the difference between the two. Spitting up generally occurs soon after feeding or sometimes up to an hour after they are fed, while real vomiting means throwing up of a large amount of the feeding and it is often forceful.

Spitting up is a normal phenomenon and goes on its own as your baby's diet changes, i.e., with the introduction of solid foods in her 5th month.

Vomiting generally occurs due to inability to burp, when your baby is full, or when there is excess of mucous in stomach. Try burping your baby more often and feed her smaller amounts. Also, avoid playing with her vigorously. Another thing you can do in such a situation is to put the baby to sleep or give her few drops of gripe water. Even if she has vomited most of the feed, you do not need to feed her again immediately after she has vomited. Try to put your baby to sleep as sleep alone do wonders in making her well. You may wake her up a little sooner than usual for the next feed. However, if your baby is repeatedly vomiting, has green-tinged bile or blood in the vomit or is running a high temperature, take her to the pediatrician.

3. Problem: Gastroenteritis Gastroenteritis is a common problem in newborns, caused because of inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The symptoms of gastroenteritis include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, chills, and aches. It is a contagious disease caused by bacteria and spreads through oral-fecal route. It usually occurs in babies suffering from immuno-suppression. The symptoms generally appear within four to 48 hours of exposure to bacteria and usually last for a day or two but in severe cases can persist for up to seven days.

Solution: The major critical consequence of this problem is dehydration due to excessive fluid loss by vomiting and diarrhea. Dehydration can be fetal. You, therefore, need to administer adequate amount of fluids to your baby. You can give your baby an electrolyte solution created for children (ask your pediatrician for a recommendation). Various unflavored/flavored oral dehydration solutions, commonly known under the brand names Pedialyte, Infalyte or Kaoelectolyte are available. However, consult with your pediatrician before you administer these fluids to your baby.

Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding, as that too would help preventing dehydration, and often alone are enough to keep your baby hydrated.

Warning! Never give your baby any anti-diarrhea medication because it can have potentially serious side effects and generally is no good treating gastroenteritis.

4. Problem: Baby Jaundice or Neonatal Jaundice Baby Jaundice or Neonatal Jaundice refers to yellowing of baby's skin and white of the eyes on second or third day of birth. It is a very common problem in newborns, affecting about 80-90 % of babies during their first week of life.

Solution: Baby jaundice is caused because soon after birth, baby's liver is not efficient enough to dispose off a yellow pigment called bilirubin, formed by normal metabolic breakdown of hemoglobin in the red blood cells. As a result, bilirubin accumulates in the blood giving yellowish appearance to baby's skin and eyes. Most of the babies do not require a treatment of jaundice, as it tends to clear up on its own when baby's liver starts functioning efficiently.

You may fasten the recovery of your baby by the following:

• Give your baby a little exposure to sunlight in the early morning or late afternoon. Never expose your baby to the strong rays of the midday sun as it may cause sunburn. • Feed your baby as often as possible as it would help excretion of excess bilirubin via urine.

You should always call your healthcare profession as sometimes bilirubin levels may be very high and your baby might have a specific treatment, Phototherapy. In this treatment, a baby is placed naked (with her eyes covered) in a special crib and is exposed to controlled amounts of ultra violet light. Ultra violet breaks down the pigment levels in the skin and helps recover jaundice. In another version of treatment, the baby is wrapped in a fiber-optic blanket called a bili-blanket or bili-pad. You may hire a bili-blanket with your doctor's prescription and treat your baby at home.

5. Problem: Common Cold Almost every baby suffers from runny nose very now and then. This is a mild viral infection that occurs very frequently in babies because their immune system is not very well developed yet.

Solution: There is no medicine, which can kill the virus causing common cold and cure cold. However, you can comfort your baby and prevent infection go worse by ensuring that she gets plenty of rest and by giving a plenty of fluid (frequently feeding the baby).

You can ease her congestion by:

• Administer a few saline drops in baby's nostrils to loosen up the mucous and after a few minutes suck the saline using a rubber bulb saline.

• Washing baby's nose with warm water containing menthol or eucalyptus oil may also help unclog her nose. You can even make her inhale steam, either plane or containing eucalyptus oil vapors.

• You can make her sleep with head slightly elevated by placing a towel under crib's mattress. This will help prevent postnasal drip.

• You can apply petroleum jelly outside her nostrils to lessen irritation.

• In case your baby is running temperature as well, you can give her infant's acetaminophen. Never give your baby aspirin because it makes babies susceptible to Reye's syndrome.

Warning! Never use nasal spays on babies unless prescribed by your healthcare professional.

6. Problem: Colic Many babies have crying attacks in the evening, usually between 6 pm and 9 pm. They cry loudly, stretch their legs up and turn bright red. These attacks are termed as 'colic' and can last for hours.

Solution: Colic or crying attacks are generally caused when the babies have excess of gas in their tummies. In this case, you can consider doing the following:

• Ensure that your baby is not swallowing air from a bottle. • Burp your baby frequently even while breastfeeding. • Try giving your baby gripe water, other herbal remedies including as weak teas brewed from fennel, chamomile, or carom (ajovan) seeds. • Some babies also get gas due to inability to digest lactose, a constituent of milk (lactose intolerance). Changing baby's milk can make the baby do better. • If you breastfeed, try changing your diet since it has an influence on milk you produce. Try eliminating spicy foods, beans, potatoes, high-fiber grains and caffeine and see if your baby does better. • If your baby is on formula, you can try Soy based formula as it is hypoallergenic.

You can make your baby calm by making her suck a pacifier, gently massaging, talking outside for a walk. You can also try feeding your baby since many babies cry and fuss from hunger.

7. Problem: Twitching, Acne and Dry Skin

Solution: Most babies tend to jerk while asleep. This kind of twitching arises because their nervous system is still developing and does not require any treatment; it tends to disappear once baby's nervous system is fully developed.

Many babies get acne, usually towards the end of the first month. This is particularly distressing to many new parents. The acne is most probably caused due to exposure of baby to her mom's hormones when inside mom's womb. Treatment normally requires cleansing baby's skin by clean, wet washcloth. If required gently wash your baby's face with mild baby soap once a day and avoid laundering the crib sheets in harsh detergents.

Some babies have a very dry skin that usually peels off especially on the hands and feet. You can massage/apply baby lotion. Put some baby lotion on cotton and gently apply on baby's skin. However, since in some cases, it may be a severe condition called eczema, it is advisable to seek your doctor's advice.

Hope you get these tips helpful! <bio>Adwina Jackson is a working mother of a gorgeous young boy.
One of the reasons that many cases of Celiac's disease go undiagnosed is that doctors mistakenly believe patients to be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS. IBS is one of the most common disorders that US doctors see, with an estimated 20% of Americans suffering from it at some point.

The reason Celiac's is commonly misdiagnosed as IBS is that the initial symptoms can be very similar. In both cases patients often report stomach pains or cramps, bloating, excessive wind, and diarrhea or constipation.

The symptoms of Celiac's disease are actually caused by the consumption of wheat or gluten and the symptoms of IBS, while not directly caused by eating wheat products, can be aggravated in this way. However, as you will see, the causes and effects of IBS and Celiac's disease are very different.

Differences in the causes of Celiac's disease and IBS

Celiac's disease is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system attacks gluten in the digestive system, damaging the tissue of the intestines at the same time. Celiacs are genetically predisposed to the disease, but can develop it at any age. It can be triggered by a stressful event such as surgery or pregnancy.

The causes of IBS, on the other hand, are not well understood. Many believe it originates in the central nervous system with changes in the nerves that control sensation or muscle contractions in the bowel. The walls of the bowels or intestines, which usually contract rhythmically to allow food to pass through, start to contract irregularly, meaning that food is pushed through too quickly or too slowly. Because IBS tends to affect women more than men, hormone changes are also thought to play a part.

The triggers for IBS and Celiac's often appear to be similar. IBS can be triggered by stress or a particular illness such as gastroenteritis in the same way as Celiac's disease. IBS can also be triggered by eating certain types of food that the body is intolerant to, including foods that contain gluten, but gluten does not cause the symptoms of IBS as it does with Celiac's disease, it only aggravates them. With IBS, the immune system does not produce antibodies to fight the food that is aggravating the condition, as it does with Celiac's disease.

The long term effects of Celiac's and IBS

The crucial difference between Celiac's and IBS, is that with Celiac's disease the gut is actually damaged by the gluten fighting antibodies, leading to long term complications, whereas with IBS, although the gut may be inflamed, no long term damage is done.

The effects of IBS are likely to be more emotional than physical as people find it hard to lead a normal, happy life, while experiencing IBS symptoms. The complications associated with Celiac's disease can be as severe as malnutrition, osteoporosis, and possibly bowel cancer, although the link between these two diseases is often contested.

As you can see, it is essential for Celiac's disease to be properly diagnosed so that the correct treatment can be begun. If your doctor wrongly diagnoses your condition as IBS and you continue to include foods that contain gluten in your diet, the damage to your gut will only increase leading to worse symptoms and long term complications.

If you suspect you have Celiac's disease, rather than IBS, especially if you have a close relative that suffers from the disease, go back to your doctor, and if necessary get a second opinion. A simple blood test could be all you need to know whether your condition is Celiac's disease or IBS.<bio>Sean Ambrose runs http://www.gluten-answers.com the web's most thorough source on providing free information on learning to manage a Gluten free diet successfully.</bio>

Natural remedies have been used for many centuries all around the world. In fact, before more traditional medicine was introduced natural cures were all that were available.

However, as with all things, the human race strived to make medicine easier and better, so along came synthetic drugs such as pain killers which were created to duplicate the results of natural pain relief medicines, but are able to be produced in laboratories and eventually replaced the old medicinal techniques and traditions.

In today's society with all the striving to make things better and easier, even the foods we eat aren't as natural as they use to be. With many of our available foods containing additives, colourings and preservatives our lifestyles are becoming much unhealthier than they once were.

Society has reached a point where the number of health issues, such as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and Autism, are rising possibly due to all these additives and preservatives that many people are now once again seeking alternative natural remedies to use for their ailments.

There seem to be more people now than ever that are using natural ingredients such as fruits, vegetables and herbs to improve their health and cure their ailments.

That is not to say that there is no place for modern medicine as modern medicine has proven to be quick to relieve symptoms of pain and illness. There are also many modern medicines that cure diseases and help ease the symptoms of many diseases.

Natural remedies, however, are much more useful when it comes to prevention of illness and chronic disease. Natural remedies are also very useful in the treatment of mental and emotional needs.

Modern medicines have many undesirable side effects which can sometimes make you feel worse than the actual illness does. This is another reason why many people are turning toward natural medicines.

Natural medicines not only treat the disease but also treat the body as a whole and not just a set of symptoms of the disease. Thus keeping your body healthy and assisting in the prevention of more disease.

Natural cures offer gentle treatments that are simple to use, easily available, much safer than synthetic medicine and reasonably inexpensive. The trend toward heading back to nature has quickly made its way around the world. Countries such as Asia have used natural plants and herbs as ingredients for their traditional therapies for many years.

When they are growing naturally around us and can benefit us in many ways, then why not take advantage of their uses. People worldwide are seeking the grains and grasses of the fields, the fruits, seeds and nuts of the trees, the herbs and vegetables of the gardens and who could forget the honey from the bees.

Honey has proven to be extremely useful as an anti-bacterial, particularly the Manuka honey. Studies have shown that burn patients who have been treated with pure, unprocessed honey have had a much faster recovery than burn patients treated with conventional burn treatment. Honey is also a useful remedy for patients with bacterial gastroenteritis and can shorten the duration of the illness.

So when we have natural medicines growing around us, why not use them when we can and keep a healthy body and a healthy lifestyle and prevent any nasty diseases from occurring. <bio>Discover The Natural Remedies and Cures The Big Drug Companies Don't Want You To Know About.
Celiac disease is referred to as the inability of the body to process gluten. Also called gluten sensitivity enteropathy, celiac disease is characterized by stimulation of the body to produce antibodies to harm or damage the tiny hair-like projections lining the small intestine of the person with this disease upon the ingestion of food containing gluten. This tiny hair-like projection that lines the small intestine is known as the villi. These tiny structures are responsible for nutrient absorption into the blood stream. Consequently, absorption of nutrients to the bloodstream is hindered due to unhealthy villi.

Therefore, if the body has the incapacity to absorb nutrients there will be greater chances of developing unhealthy body condition such as malnutrition and other health-related issues. There are studies showing association of heredity as the cause of development of Celiac disease while some studies are also based on certain medical conditions like childhood gastroenteritis as the causative factor. It often occurs on children and the only means of diagnosis is through biopsy of a colon tissue sample.

Celiac disease is often suspected when a child seems not to gain weight, to have a stomach that sticks out beyond the normal extent, usually constipated or sometimes have bulky, frequent and foul-smelling stools. Unfortunately, cure is not yet established to be effective; thus the only known cure is to eliminate gluten from the food that is eaten. On the other hand, careful supervision and consultation with the medical doctor is the best option that you can take on.

While this seems to be a very frustrating and tiresome disease to deal with; the good thing is the hope given by the cases wherein a patient suffering from Celiac disease outgrows the condition. When this happens, normal and usual diet is then resumed and normal healthy development of the body will resume as well.

Since most babies and young children with Celiac disease may have allergy to cow's milk; it is essential to feed them with other vitamin sources like fresh vegetables and fruits. Other nutrients could then be derived from fresh fish and nuts. It is highly necessary that you always include healthy non-gluten foods in the diet so as to restore health and reduce the risk of developing other damages to the intestinal tract. Seek the guidance of the doctor if a high-quality vitamin and mineral supplement is necessary to meet the nutritional needs essential to the developing body. The doctor is the right person to know if the vitamin or mineral supplement is totally gluten-free.

Some Ideas for vitamins for celiac:

Treat Celiac with vitamin D
People who have celiac are usually prone to bone problems like osteopoenia.

Vitamin D, along with calcium, can help fight off the effects of celiac in the body.

Doctors usually prescribe the daily RDA for Vitamin D and about 250 mg of calcium thrice a day. With these two nutrients working to address the issues that pertains to the bones, people with celiac should not worry about their bones thinning out due to the disease.

Vitamin C for Celiac

The use of Vitamin C in the body is just too many.

For one, it is a very good anti-oxidant. But in this case, Vitamin C is taken more to reduce histamine in the blood. Histamine is the term given to the by-product of the body's allergic responses.

Take note that people suffering from celiac have lowered nutrition levels, resulting to a weaker immune system. They are more prone to allergies than any other people. Around 2000 mg of Vitamin C a day should be sufficient. It is suggested that half of the dosage is taken during morning and the other one during the night.

Celiac disease needs proper management, it is therefore vital that vitamins for celiac is supplied to the body in order to ensure healthy development until symptoms are totally cleared out of the body.<bio>Jack L Bloom is the owner of the online vitamin assistant.
As years are rolling by, we face many changes around us, may it be technology or lifestyle. One thing that is often forgotten is adapting to such changes, so as to always lead a healthy life. Today's world demands more and more from each individual and an extra mile has to be travelled, in order to survive. How can such exertion be made possible, without a sound health?

It is often quoted, that the body is the temple of the soul. There should never be a compromise on things that pertain to the health of an individual. Even as one strives for quality education, a lucrative job and an affluent life, equal importance must be given to the care of one's health. There are some factors to be kept in mind and reflected as and when needed during the course of life.

EAT SMART:

As it is understood, food plays THE major role in one's health. The choice of food must be made based on the lifestyle of the individual. For example, those who are occupied in jobs that demand physical labour, must make sure that they consume enough amount of energy yielding food, so as to compensate for the loss of energy while doing work. The following chart says which is the right food for a particular lifestyle:

=95Hard Physical Labour:

Such people need to make sure that their diet consists of enough supply of carbohydrates. In India however, this should not be a concern, as rice is the staple diet, which provides much of the carbohydrate needed by the body.

=95Sedentary Workers:

This includes the category of people who do "on the desk" jobs and do not have enough physical exercise. They need more amount of proteins, vitamins and minerals along with minimum amount of carbohydrates.

=95Children:

The nutritional requirements of children vary as they grow, the requirement being highest during adolescence. When the child is an infant, the mother's milk is the ideal food that can be given, as it contains the essential nutrients as well as substances that induce immunity. Awareness must be created amongst people of the lower sections of the society, about the importance of feeding infants with mother's milk. The nutrition of the child, occupies the seat of priority, as it is only during childhood, that the body grows to the maximum.

Nowadays, people prefer fast food, as it suits their tastes and fast paced lifestyle. Even though these foodstuffs give the satiety, they do only more harm in the longer run. Even youngsters these days complain of heartburns, ulcers and gastroenteritis, the culprit being junk food. Such foods must be cut down and healthier alternatives such as fibrous foods (whole wheat bread, oats), fruits, green vegetables etc must be sought.

STRETCH OUT AND EXERCISE:

Exercise must not be looked down upon as a cumbersome chore, but must become a part of life, just as how we eat and sleep. A little portion of the day must be kept aside for physical workout and exercises. While affluent people can head to gyms and fitness centers, those who cannot afford such, can very well stay at home and still get their share. Walking, jogging are some exercises that anyone can do irrespective of age and gender. Swimming, cycling are excellent choices as they relax both the mind and the body as well. Each part of the body must be given due importance and toned well so that the exercise is wholesome.

Obesity is now considered as a disease. People with obese bodylines must wake up to the reality and do the needful (diet and exercise) before its too late. Obesity if left untreated, may lead to clinical conditions such as Atherosclerosis and Myocardial Infarction.

SOUND MIND GIVES WAY TO A SOUND BODY:

Along with all the care that is taken for the body, the mind must be kept healthy with good and light thoughts. If the mind is not at rest, it will definitely reflect on the physical health. Having a good environment around, catching up with loved ones and friends, bringing up a pet, cultivating hobbies and involving oneself in societal developments keeps the mind occupied with productive thoughts and prevents stress from eating away the mind. Having a stroll, listening to soft music, playing indoor and outdoor games can follow long working hours at work place.

Following such simple rules can benefit the body to a great degree and improve a person's health status by several measures. Being healthy not only benefits a single individual, but also contributes to the goodness of the entire society and the nation. <bio>For more information on Health and Fitness please go to: http://www.better-health-blog.com/ </bio>
