I'm going to share with you the mistakes I made and the things I did right about getting book reviews for my novel MRS. LIEUTENANT.

First the mistakes:

I waited until the book was published instead of sending out the manuscript or the first page galleys from my print-on-demand publisher BookSurge.

I used pay-for-review services whose reviewers were not committed to the subject of my novel -- for them this was a job for hire.

I sent copies of the book to book bloggers who responded to my email that they indeed wanted to review the book but who never reviewed the book. I later realized that I wasn't anyone to them so my book obviously got buried in the avalanche of books they receive.

Now what I did right:

I researched on Amazon for reviewers who had written good reviews about similar-themed books. I contacted them through the Amazon and offered my book for review. (Note -- there is no payment given for these reviews.) I got a few replies, including some who told me they were too busy along with some who really wanted to review the book and did.

When I emailed these to consider reviewing the book, I gave them the link to my website with the first four chapters available for free. I suggested they read those chapters to see if the book might appeal to them. Obviously, if they didn't like the first four chapters, they probably wouldn't want to read the whole book.

I took a through virtual book Pump Up Your , and several book bloggers agreed to review the book. (Again, no payment.) I said yes to providing a second free book for a contest connected with the review (or interview). And the winner of the contest often had her/his own book blog.

I started using social -- especially Twitter and Facebook -- to make "friends" online. Now when these people said yes to reviewing my book I was no longer a nobody to them. We had a relationship.

More valuable reviews from people who were interested in my book:

The reviews I got by approaching people interested in my book's fiction genre were much more valuable than the reviews I got using, for example, pay-for-review services where the reviewer might not even like my type of book.

And, yes, doing the work to find and contact reviewers who like your type of book takes time and effort. It can be much easier to use pay-for-review services even thought these reviews might not be as targeted and sincere.

If you do use pay-for-review services, ask if the reviewer will be someone who likes the genre in which you've written. You could even ask to see samples of the reviews the proposed reviewer has written on books of this genre. In this way you may have a better chance of getting a reviewer who will appreciate your book.

And if right now you're still writing your book or it's still in the publication process, this is an excellent time to start forming relationships on Twitter and Facebook. The key to both these social media platforms is to freely share information that can help others. The Cochrane reviewers looked at six trials that had 800 participants who all had OA. Four studies included patients with osteoarthritis of either the knee or hip, one study followed patients with only hip arthritis and one included patients with knee arthritis only.

In the studies, patients did aquatic exercises for different lengths of time and numbers of sessions per week and were compared to other patients who did no exercise or exercised on land. Most of the studies measured patients after three months of therapy.

Based on the studies' results, the reviewers said, "In people with osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, pain may decrease by 1 more point on a scale of 0 to 20 with aquatic exercise, and function may improve by 3 more points on a scale of 0 to 68."

"There is gold-level evidence that for osteoarthritis of the hip or knee, aquatic exercise probably slightly reduces pain and slightly improves function over three months," the reviewers wrote. "Based on this, one may consider using aquatic exercise as the first part of a longer exercise program for osteoarthritis patients."

The reviewers were unable to find evidence on whether aquatic exercise affected patients' walking ability or stiffness after treatment sessions.

The reviewers added that more research could help determine long-term effects and to understand which kinds of aquatic exercise as well as frequency and length might benefit osteoarthritis sufferers.

Author's note: Water exercise makes sense for OA because the buoyancy relieves stress on joints. It is the ultimate low impact workout. This is particularly important for those patients with OA who are overweight, which is, sadly, more common than not. The benefits that accrue to the patient include not only relief of pain and improved mobility but if done often enough should help with weight loss.

If we as self-publishers don't begin to work together to combat the bias against our work, we are going to continue to be treated as and feel like second-class citizens of the writing community.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that poorly written, unedited, crummy-looking books should be given the same treatment as high-quality books. But I am saying that books should be judged on their own merits, not on whether they are published by the author or by someone related to the author, and not by the number of copies that are printed at a time. How can someone judge a book when they haven't even seen it?

People say authors only self-publish because they can't get a traditional publisher. That's not my story. I chose to publish my , TOO NEAR THE EDGE, through my family publishing company, . I didn't send the novel to any agents or publishers first. I made the self-publishing decision based on my experience with my two published =97one, self-published has sold over 50,000 copies and is now in its 4th edition; the other was published by a major traditional publisher sold about 5,000 copies and is now out of print.

My self-published novel, TOO NEAR THE EDGE has gotten good reviews from online reviewers and won a silver medal for best regional fiction in the 2007 Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY) contest. It's available on and other online sites, and I can keep it in print as long as I want. But if I want it to sell, I have to promote it, which is harder than it should be due to the bias against self-publishers.

I understand that approximately 800 books are published every day and reviewers are deluged with books to review. But I hate that like a trendy new NYC bar, they man the door so that only the well-connected get in. Reviewers should be in the business of judging books not judging publishers. Just give our books a chance.

And why should self-published authors be given second class status at conferences? Here's what happened to me after I found out that the annual "Left Coast Crime Convention," (LLC) meeting=97a mystery convention sponsored by mystery fans, for mystery fans=97will be in my area in 2008. I figured this would be a chance to go to a regional conference as an author, meet fans, and maybe even get my book in the "book room" to sell. But, no. It turns out that to be considered an author at the LLC I have to either meet the requirements for active membership in the Mystery Writers of America or be shortlisted for a major mystery award like the Edgar or the Anthony. That means I have to have been paid at least $1,000 in advances and/or royalties for my book, which had an initial print run of at least 500 copies. But even then, I can't be considered an author at their conference if my book is self-published or cooperatively published. My publisher must have been in business for at least two years and publish at least five other authors per year, none of whom may be an employee, business partner, or a relative of the publisher. And my publisher must be on the MWA list of approved publishers.

Well my publishing company, PMI Books, belongs to PMA, and we are reputable=97but clearly, given all their criteria, they aren't going to put us on their approved list.

So I tried to get in under award thing. My book isn't shortlisted for the mystery awards they list, but I wrote them a very polite email asking if the IPPY would qualify me to be an author at their conference. They replied that I don't meet the eligibility requirements and that awards like the IPPY are not on the list, "since they are primarily awarded to authors from non-traditional publishing houses."

Enough!! These criteria are outdated, unfair and shortsighted. They arbitrarily exclude books and authors based not on the quality of the books but on the publisher and method of printing. There must be a better way. Self-publishers need to work together to end this bias against us.

No longer do you have to worry about matching up skill levels in order to get a fair game. Another reason is that it's a relaxing game where you can socialize with people in and out of the game while still focusing on your play. And finally, college kids have found that it's one of the few games that allows them to hold a can of beer while thowing!

So, where will it end for this game? Is it just a fad that will soon die off? It doesn't appear that it is anytime soon. The game is a staple at any BBQ or summer party that happens in Chicago, Ohio, or Kentucky. Many manufacturers of cornhole products are reporting that they are seeing increased orders from the coasts and other areas of the country that were never exposed to the game. So, who knows?
