The overall theory of pruning apple trees is to first train the young apple tree to grow efficiently, and then to promote the best production of good quality fruit as the tree matures.

By training a young apple tree to grow andquot;correctlyandquot; you enable the tree to develop a strong structure that will be able to support heavy apple growth, plus you will have a tree shape that is easy to manage in later years. A well-applied regimen of training and pruning apple trees stimulates strong growth of only those branches you wish to keep as lasting parts of the mature tree.

Once the young apple tree has been trained for several years to form its shape, annual pruning then becomes the means of keeping the desired shape and encouraging the best fruit production. Most pruning is done to encourage growth, and this type of pruning is done in late winter while trees are dormant. The wounds inflicted by pruning heal best then, plus flower buds are easy to spot. You can also prune your trees in late summer, but only if you wish to discourage growth.

So what is the secret to pruning apple trees? Simply put, the best apples will grow on branches that are from two to five years old. To keep a good supply of branches at this age, prune the older branches out each year, allowing younger branches to replace them.

Here's how:

Apple Tree Pruning Basics

Most apple trees grown by home gardeners are small-to-medium sized, and are best trained to the central-leader or pyramid system of pruning. The central-leader pruning method suits trees that have a dominant central trunk with lateral branches at regular intervals. In essence, it is a cone or pyramid shaped tree.

With the central leader pruning method, more sunlight is allowed to reach inside the tree. Basically, you prune the upper branches to stay shorter than the lower branches. Wide spacing between the upper and lower branches is key here, and a good rule of thumb is to keep the branches about three feet apart on a mature tree.

It is essential to make clean cuts, so always use good-quality, sharp pruning shears, and for bigger cuts use sharp lopping shears and saws. Shears with two sharp sides (like scissors) are better than the types with one sharp and one blunt side.

The first thing to do is cut away all dead, broken, or diseased branches. Also cut out any wood that crosses over or crowds other branches.

Next, identify the central leader and prune other limbs that compete with it. Look the tree over and decide which branches you want to keep. Your goal is to keep more horizontal branches and less vertical branches.

Remove limbs that cause too much shading. Remember with a mature tree to choose two or three of the oldest, larger branches on the tree for pruning. Take into account their position and whether a younger replacement branch is nearby. Often you'll see this choice is easy to make.

Remove suckers from around the tree base, and spindly shoots and water sprouts from along the limbs. Make your pruning cuts nearly, but not completely, flush with the branch, leaving no stubs (these can become hosts to rot and disease.) If you do make a pruning cut that is completely flush with the limb or the trunk, the wound will not heal as quickly.

If your task is pruning apple trees that have been neglected, do not prune severely, all at one time. Excessive pruning can be too much of a shock to the tree's system, so spread the work over two or three years.

What's the best teacher for pruning? Experience! Learn about pruning apple trees by following good, basic fruit tree pruning instructions, and you're bound to become a seasoned pro. A few wrong cuts will be many times better than no pruning at all. <bio>Robert Mosse is a garden and lawn care specialist and author of the andquot;Easyandquot; Lawn and Gardening Book Series.
Deciduous trees thrive in a variety of climates. They are a hearty lot of trees but proper care is necessary to see that your deciduous trees flourish and survive.

Call it being proactive, call it using your green-thumb, call it common horticultural knowledge. However you choose to see it, becoming deciduous-tree savvy is needed, and fairly easy to do. If you are unfamiliar with how to care for your deciduous trees, read on to build a knowledge-base to keep your trees healthy and promote longevity.

Many deciduous trees, fruit trees especially, can survive in mountain regions=97such as the apple tree or cherry tree, for instance. The apple tree requires extra chilling and cooler summer temps, so mountain regions offer this weather-bound setting. Many mountain regions, however, suffer from a risk of late frosts. Desert locations are another potential location for deciduous fruit trees. You rule out late frosts, for the most part anyway. Yet, mountain or foothill regions are, by far, a fairer location to plant deciduous trees.

When you plant your deciduous trees, choose a location with lots of sunlight and, if possible, protected from high winds. This will aid protecting trees during any unfortunate storms that blow across the region.

Some deciduous fruit trees require cross-pollination in order for the fruit tree to germinate and bud. Be certain that you find a compatible pollinator. You can do this by using a two-in-one or three-in-one grafted tree can be used. See your local nursery for further details.

Just as taking a proactive mindset to your planting is key, it's also a good idea to label varieties. If, for instance, a tree dies, you can quickly replace it. Having a backup map with written labels is another good idea, in the event that labels are lost or damaged due to inclement weather conditions.

Deciduous fruit trees should be pruned annually. Do so before buds swell. This promotes optimal growth and yield. Pruning, although sometimes arduous, doesn't need to be a complicated endeavor. Again, it's a matter of doing a little research, become familiar with the trees life cycle.

Three pruning phases are necessary for deciduous fruit trees. The first phase occurs during the planting phase of the tree. The goal is to help the tree create a vase-shaped structure. Also, when visiting a local nursery, be certain to purchase trees with well-developed root structures. Even though the upper portion of the tree might catch your eye when shopping for a hearty-looking tree, if the root system is weak, you may have trouble harvesting deciduous fruit trees.

The second pruning phase begins once the first year of growth is complete. Prune back your tree and cut it into scaffolds. This layering of branches promotes the greatest yield. Create some gaps, but don't prune back too much.

The third phase of pruning occurs once a tree reaches maturity, anywhere from 5-7 years for most deciduous trees. Prune the tree for fruit production during this phase. Pruning, again, needs to be focused on layering, or designing well-spaced scaffolding for fruit development and growth.

For more information on pruning fruit trees, contact the UC Cooperative Extension in Bakersfield, California. They have a 47-page journal entitled Pruning Fruit and Nut Trees. You can also contact your local nursery to gain further information on caring for deciduous trees in your area. <bio>http://www.mishobonsai.com </bio>

When miniaturizing the bonsai tree, it is important that know how to prune your tree. The major parts of the bonsai that you need to prune well are the foliage or the leaf part of the bonsai and the root part of the plant. Pruning the bonsai is really not just a skill but more of a special kind of art.

It is very important that you as the plant owner should be very careful in the miniaturizing process of your bonsai plant. The leaves of the bonsai are very delicate so the pruning should be done with intricate care. Pruning this top part of the plant is actually the aesthetic part of the miniaturizing process of the bonsai so you really have to be creative when pruning the foliage. Creativity in pruning means you must have a specific shape or form in mind for your bonsai plant and be able to realize it by transforming your plant into the desired shape and presentation. It is also a must that the dead part of the foliage is also removed in order to keep the plant really green and healthy-looking.

The root part of the plant is also pruned. This process is a must because new root parts must be allowed to grow and the bonsai has limited space for its roots as it is grown on small pots or containers. Otherwise, because of the limited space, the new roots might not be able to grow. Growing new roots are vital as it promotes the better absorption by the bonsai of the nutrients and water present in the soil.

When miniaturizing the roots and leaves of the bonsai, remember that this affects the plant as a whole as the two parts are definitely connected to each other. If you prune the roots more than what is needed, the amount of nutrients that can be taken in by the plant might be lessened. Hence, this can greatly affect the bonsai's health. Likewise, pruning of the foliage should be just right enough to eliminate whatever excess pressure from the roots that can be caused by the leaves of the plant.

The outcome of your pruning of the bonsai is dependent mainly on how you want your plant to look in the end. Therefore, it is imperative that you have a firm picture of the plant in its final form and shape. Be careful when already doing the miniaturizing process as whatever part of the roots or branch that you pruned is gone for good. Pruning is a very delicate and time-consuming work. It should not be done in a haphazard way. Perseverance is one quality that you must possess in order to achieve the desired outcome for your bonsai. <bio>Owner of http://www.mishobonsai.com , has been practicing bonsai for over 8 years. The idea is to take what would normally be a very large tree and stunt its growth so that it stays small. Most people will keep their trees just a few inches tall. There are many things that are needed to work with bonsai plants. Here are some of the things your tree will need:

1. Constant pruning. A bonsai tree will require more pruning and care than your average plant. You will even need to prune the roots to help keep the trees growth stunted.

2. Water. Every plant needs water and a bonsai tree is no exception. With a bonsai however you must take even greater care to over water because of how the tree is designed.

3. Sunlight. Another need of all plants in sunlight. Another thing to consider is the temperature to keep the plant at. Every plant has a certain temperature that it will grow and thrive best in and you should consider looking up what it is for your bonsai tree.

4. Fertilizer. Remember to always choose the best fertilizer for your plant. Also, don't overdue it with how much you use. These plants are more delicate than your average house or garden plant.

One of the most important things to consider when getting a bonsai tree is time. You are going to spend a good bit of time pruning and taking care of your tree if you want to keep it looking healthy. While this is a calming hobby for a lot of people the average person just wouldn't want to deal with it. Make sure you are prepared to spend time working on your tree.

Also, make sure you do a lot of research on the best type of tree for your area. Some trees do better in certain climates than others and this should be taken into consideration when buying or planting a tree.

Lastly, check out the following books for some help regarding your new hobby:

Bonsai - pocket encyclopedia 101 Essential Tips: Bonsai Bonsai Basics : A Step-By-Step Guide to Growing, Training and General Care Simon and Schuster's Guide to Bonsai

Reading up on bonsai trees using those books plus the information posted here and on the web should allow you to successfully start your own bonsai tree.
Some people think that a bonsai is another plant or tree variety that is a genetically dwarf and that it will never grow as tall as any normal tree. But bonsai does not refer to a variety of any plant or tree. Rather it is an art of miniaturizing a plant variety. Bonsai pronounced as "bone sigh" is a Japanese word that refers to the art of growing trees or plant in a pot. The existence of bonsai was first mentioned in an 800-year old picture discovered at an ancient Chinese temple. It was then deduced that the art of bonsai originated in China.

Miniaturizing a tree to attain a beautiful artwork involves patience, time, effort and knowledge. A tree planted in a pot does not automatically become a bonsai. Unlike a regular tree or plant that can be left to grow by itself, a bonsai tree or plant must be trained while it is still young. Several steps or procedures are to be followed while the tree is still young.

Wiring is a procedure use to train the branch of a tree to the desired shape. Using a copper or aluminum coated wire; a branch is positioned to the desired shape. Then the wire is left on the branch until such time that the branch can retain its shape without the help of the wire. Two or more branches can also be tied together to attain the desired look. Proper wiring method should be followed so as not to hurt the branch or branches. Cut the wires into smaller pieces when removing the wire as unwinding can break the branch. Fall or winter is considered the best time when planning to wire a tree.

Stretching is another bonsai shaping method in which a piece of cloth is wrapped around the branch, tied with a wire then attached to the ground. Stretching is done slowly, takes time and done in multiple steps so as not to break the branch.

Pruning the branches and the roots is necessary when miniaturizing a tree. Pruning is done to shape or style the tree. This will removed unwanted branches and roots. When the bonsai tree or plant is already in good shape, pruning is done to maintain the style and shape. Pruning is done on spring. Pruned areas are treated with special chemical to protect the wound area and hasten the healing process.

Defoliating is done when some parts of the trees developed faster. Defoliating the more developed parts will shift the growth to the underdeveloped area. It will also force the development of new and smaller leaves which will fit better a bonsai tree.

Repotting a bonsai tree takes place at different times depending on what type of tree is being shaped. This is to balance the growth of the roots with the other parts of the tree.

Other factors such as the amount of sunlight, fertilizer, humidity and supply of water are as important as the above procedures. Each tree has its own special needs. These factors must be studied carefully according to what type of bonsai tree is to be developed. <bio>Owner of http://www.mishobonsai.com , has been practicing bonsai for over 8 years.
Would you love to get into gardening and landscaping, but you're just not sure you have a green thumb? Starting with a tree can be a good way to start. It may take a little more work to plant a tree than it does to plant seeds or small plants in a garden or flower bed, but once you do that, the maintenance is much lower. One big plus is that there is no weeding involved. You may have to do some pruning, and depending on the kind of tree and where you live, you may have to take some precautions to protect your tree from disease or insects and animals. Maybe feed and water it in the beginning. After that, it will probably do pretty well on its own.

Planting a tree for a special occasion is a good way to start a family tradition that you and your children can cherish memories of for years to come. If your yard is already chock full, or you don't have a yard, many communities will have celebrations on Arbor Day (the last Friday in April) or other beautification projects that you can participate in. Once you plant the tree, you can make planting a new tree an annual event. Another idea is to go back and check on the growth of your tree on the anniversary of its planting. You kids can get a kick out of planting a tree for their birthday one year, and then returning to it each consecutive year and see how much it's grown. Growing up with a tree can give a child a good sense of how long it takes for trees to mature, and a better understanding of environmental concerns. You can also use tree planting as an opportunity to teach your child about the role of trees in pollution control, erosion prevention, and other concepts. To share the experience, suggest to your child's teacher that planting a tree could be a good class project. Better yet, offer to organize it yourself.

If you are planting a tree with a child, take their personality into consideration and let them be part of the selection process. You can go to a nursery or garden store and learn about what kinds of trees would be best for your climate and the part of your yard where it will go. If possible, select a tree whose leaves are your child's favorite color, or maybe a fruit tree of their favorite fruit, or one that flowers around the time of their birthday. Giving your child a connection to nature and protecting it can be a great birthday gift that pays dividends in the future. <bio>Leon Groom writes about http://www.HomeGardenCoupons.com, http://www.homegardencoupons.com/Coupons/Park%20Seed.html and http://www.homegardencoupons.com </bio>

It takes up little space, is not demanding upon your time, is a creative outlet and can empower you with a wonderful feeling of accomplishment.

Many different trees are good subjects for bonsai, but maple is one of the favorites. Some say the easiest to work on are the green leafed types such as pure Japanese Maple (acer palmatum), and Trident Maple (a.buergerianum).

To be successful growing a bonsai tree you must develop some specialized knowledge. That includes soil preparation and watering, but careful pruning is foremost in successfully turning a tree in the work of art called bonsai.

Just like any artist, before you can create a work of art you must have a vision of what you wish to create. Most bonsai experts use a simple drawing to formulate their ideas. Others may use software designed for gardeners as the first step in the process. When you completed you design you are ready to plan the pruning techniques you will use to achieve your vision.

'Finger pruning' is the next step in creating the bonsai. Finger pruning conifers means pinching new growth to begin shaping the tree. The technique of finger pruning is simply supporting the tree or branch with one hand. You then take the unwanted new growth between the thumb and forefinger of your other hand. Now you just twist sharply to remove the growth, avoiding a harmful pull on the branch or tree.

It sounds simple but finger pruning takes some practice to do correctly. The first tree you grow should be considered your practice tree. Don't attempt to build your skills on a valuable bonsai. You can learn by practicing on an ordinary small bush. You will know that you have mastered the technique when you can remove growth cleanly without tugging on the plant.

Finger pruning is not compatible with all plants. Deciduous trees, such as maples and Chinese elms, require scissor tip pruning. With these trees you must trim the unwanted new shoots back to your match your predetermined design or sketch.

Defoliation (leaf pruning) is another shaping skill you must acquire. It is done with some deciduous trees and bushes, such as ficus. Defoliation is usually done in mid-summer, using a fine pair of scissors to remove half the number of leaves while leaving the stems untouched.

You will quickly learn that shaping the tree to your desired look is why you are pruning leaves and branches.

Next you must consider root pruning. This type of pruning is done to maintain the basic health of the tree. It should be coordinated with your branch pruning schedule.

The growth of the roots is affected by your pruning of the branches and leaves. Heavy branch pruning slows the growth of the root system. In this case there are fewer leaves and branches, so the roots need to supply fewer nutrients and less moisture to the tree.

It is very important to examine the roots at least every two years. Depending upon the age, species and the size of the pot, some trees can become root bound. Roots naturally curve within the soil and container. They will start to curve inward when they meet the side of the pot. They will be pressed for space and have nowhere to go but up when the available space is occupied by more roots. That's why root pruning is required.

Roots must be trimmed with very sharp scissors to prevent them from running out of growing space. It is recommended that you trim the roots to about two thirds of their current length. While you are doing this it is a good idea to eliminate a few older roots and a few of the younger roots. Just be sure you leave enough roots to support the tree.

Another way to avoid the tree becoming root bound is to transfer larger and older trees into larger pots.

The species of tree determines the proper pruning time. Full-sized trees of the same species can be used as a pruning guideline.

Some species need to be pruned at the beginning of growth season to stunt growth. Other species need to be pruned at the end of growing season to leave fewer roots, leaves, and branches prior to the dormant period.

With just a little skill and care you and your bonsai tree will share a happy and healthy life together. <bio>Patricia Taylor is a home interior design and furnishing advisor.
The question is often asked as to when be the right and correct time to "prune" your trees? This is always a topical and highly relevant important question when it comes to the topic of tree care =96 for your yard and garden landscaping =96 whether it is your city house or rural cottage or chalet.

When considering the timeliness of pruning one must consider various factors. The correct timing is not always when it is easiest and most convenient for the landscape artist or technician.

The first factor to consider is that every pruning cut on a living branch is a direct insult and injury to that plant is it tree, bush or shrub. These wounds take away energy from the plants vital stores and reserves. Pruning wounds will cause the tree to use energy to contain the decay that is caused by injuring the tree and as well in the repair process. Nothing is for nothing and so it is with tree care and growth. . Make it a general overall rule to prune only the bare minimum amount needed. Experience of millennia of professional landscapers has shown that pruning excessively will result in permanent injury to the tree or plant trimmed. As well in the future increased frequencies of corrective pruning and landscaping will most likely be needed and required. These later repairs would otherwise may not have been required.

The second factor to consider is the actual species of the tree. It is well known that various trees have different growth patterns that affect the time of year that you can successfully prune the tree. Trees like maple, willow and birch should not be pruned late in the year =96 in the winter seasons and as well in the early springtime seasons. Pruning willow , maple and birch trees at these times will cause them to lose copious amounts of sap liquid , that while it does slightly weaken the trees , will leave a sticky mess in your yard. Trees that tend to lose sap can be best be pruned when they are at their fully leafed state later in the spring or summer season.

The third factor to consider is the presence of insect pests and disease. Some trees may be made more susceptible to these problems when you injure them by pruning. For this reason, species like elm and oak should only be pruned when dormant, which is typically after their leaves fall and into mild winter. In many jurisdictions, there are prohibitions on pruning elms and oaks during their growing seasons.

Generally most flowering trees can be pruned right after they flower to allowing new flower buds to set. Pruning these trees too late can result in poor flowing response the following growing season year.

It has been found that with many deciduous trees, the later you wait to prune them, in the winter season, the greater the amount of adventitious shoots you will develop the following year. If you prune these trees later in the season =96 best in fall or late summer you will find that these succulent shoots are less likely to avail themselves in your yard.

Spruce trees and most pine trees can be pruned in the spring time when they are generally putting out new growth. Generally most evergreen conifers follow this rule and should not be pruned from mid summer until the fall weather cools off.

Finally, it is important that you're landscaping tools and utensils are sharp and up to the job. Cuts larger than =BE of an inch should be performed with a sharp saw. If the cut is below =BC of an inch then the preferred tool are "bypass pruning shears".

All in all, prune your landscape trees, shrubs and plants correctly and at the appropriate time of the year for the species of plant. <bio>http://www.glendalegolfs.com Manitoba Golfing and Golf Course Care and Maintenance http://www.fishlakemanitobanarrows.com Manitoba Forest Hunting Lodges Manitoba Beaches and Yards http://www.sellyourmanitobacottage.com Lake Winnipeg Beaches </bio>

The early Spanish explorers of the 1500's found Strawberry Guava, 'Acca sellowiana O.,' growing as a native tree in America, where they were firmly established from Mexico southward to Peru. History records that Seminole Indians were growing guava trees in Northern Florida in 1816.

Strawberry Guava, 'Acca sellowiana O.,' can grow into trees 25 feet tall and frequently they are planted by homeowners as a privacy hedge that is easily trimmed or grown as an untrimmed windbreak. The guava tree can be trained to single or multiple trunks by pruning and will grow into an excellent specimen plant that is covered with exotic flowers during late spring. The wood is gray in color, and the grain is very hard and dense. The leaves are small, distinctly colored flat green, making the plants easily recognized at a distance.

The guava tree or shrub is slow growing and requires the planting of two plants for cross-pollination. The tree is cold hardy to 15 degrees Fahrenheit and is salt water tolerant. Bees and hummingbirds visit the red and yellow flowers, and the pollination visits result in a heavy fruit set.

The guava fruit is classified as a berry by most botanists, and it occurs in clusters with individual berries in sizes just under one inch. Each guava berry is covered by a rough rind and the pulp inside occurs in colors of white, pink, or red.

The guava tree grows best in partial shade in acidic soils. The plants are virtually disease free, and the fruit is usually harvested by shaking off the mature guavas when the color change occurs, then, they are collected onto sheets or tarps. The fruit will keep well in a refrigerator up to a week and can be peeled and eaten as fresh fruit, as a dessert, or in salads. If the fruit is dipped into diluted lemon juice, the color of the pulp will remain bright.

The fruit is commercially made into puddings, pies, juices, and jellies, and is a rich source of Vitamin A and C, as well as many beneficial minerals. The guava is grown commercially in Florida and California, and in many southern forests the shrub has become naturalized and mistaken as a native historical plant

"Guavaween" is a traditional central Florida event and fund raiser that is held every year to celebrate the advent of the guava corresponding to parades and festivals that are scheduled near Halloween at holidays Ybor City, Florida, an outskirt of Tampa, Florida. This "Guavaween" event is celebrated during the last of October each year.

There are many kinds of guavas; one tropical guava, 'Psidium guajava L.,' is an important crop in Hawaii, with fruit production exceeding 15 million pounds per year. These guava fruits are technically considered to be berries, and the trees grow in the wild on the island of Kuawai as a native plant. Before harvesting, the plants are vigorously pruned, fertilized, and irrigated. Fresh vigorous shoots grow in response to the pruning, and the delicious fruit forms within the flowers that mature on the new wood to form guavas and require about seven months to fully develop.

Most travelers to Florida last century will remember the many tourist stops on U.S. Highway #1 and U.S. 41 that have now been transformed into interstate highways I-1 and I-75. Tourist shops such as "Stuckeys" were loaded with souvenirs such as pecan logs. One of the most memorable items displayed for sale was guava jelly, jam, paste, or any other conceivable product that involved the use of the magical fruit of the guava tree. All these little jars of jelly and other guava products were visually stunning to the eye, revealing their contents in colors of mint green, red, yellow, and blue. <bio>Patrick A.
The best way to keep your plants looking good and healthy is to keep them pruned. However, the average person doesn't know how to prune their plants. Were going to look at a few of the basics you will need to know in order to keep your plants looking good.

The biggest reason people will prune their plants is to decide how they will grow. This can be a good and bad thing depending on how it's done. Some variety of plants will stay healthier if they are allowed to grow free. Some plants however can take pruning and are sometimes the better for it. Now let us discuss some of the steps for pruning your plants.

First let us go ahead and remove dead leaves. These can be pulled right off the plant and don't require and tools. The only use dead leaves have is to deprive a plant of nutrients that could go toward live lives to gather sunlight.

After you remove all the dead leaves you should start trimming off dead branches. The idea is to get as close to the trunk or thinker branch as you can without scaring it. If you're successful then it will heal.

Lastly, consider trimming off any unhealthy limbs and leaves. This keeps your plant from having to support branches and limbs that aren't helping bring nutrients to it. Usually by doing this what flowers and leaves the plant has that are healthy will become even healthier and maybe even have more vibrant colors.

After doing this you can start trimming your plant to shape. The first thing is to decide what shape you want your plant. After you do that you just start trimming off any branch that you don't need until you get your design. One you have your shape remember to water your plant and then treat it as you normally would. That's how easy it is to prune your plant! <bio>If you're wanting to prune your tree into a master piece, get our bonsai seeds and create a work of art. http://www.mishobonsai.com/ </bio>

Pruning your roses is an essential part of rose maintenance. There are many ways and opinions on the best way to prune, when the perfect time to prune is, and which roses need pruning. Many seasoned rosarians have their favorite tested methods.

Pruning roses is not as complicated as some people think. To make it easy, there are 7 basic rules to follow when pruning your roses. If you keep these rules in mind, you will be rewarded with the most beautiful rose bushes.

The first rule in pruning roses is to remove any dead or dying growth. In doing this, your bushes will look good and will be free from signs of diseases. Removing the deadwood will discourage insects from making your rose plant their home. Insects love rose plants so keep an eye out for them while pruning.

Second, you should keep the center of your rose plant clear. This helps keep your bushes clear from pests and insects and allows good ventilation, which reduces the likelihood of fungus growth and other diseases.

Third, it is important to keep your rose plant away from other bushes so that their growth will not be impaired. If your rose plant is disturbed or overcrowded by other plants it may not grow, as you desire.

Fourth, you must shape your rose bushes while they are growing. This will prevent the roses from growing too wildly. If you do this, your roses will grow properly in the right direction. You will notice some roses growing in different directions. These are roses, which have not been shaped during growth.

Fifth, you must use sharp pruning shears. This is important so you make a clean cut and don't effect the areas that you are not pruning. If you use a pruning shear that is not sharp, it may result in uneven branches, which can hinder or result in uneven growth.

Sixth, you must clean your pruning shears so they are free from diseases or fungus spores. The shears should be kept dry to prevent rust formation which makes your shears dull. If your shears are not sharp, you will have a hard time cutting the desired parts and will end up damaging the branches.

And lastly, you should seal the cuts you have made so that they will be free from disease. Using Elmer's glue works well and it is inexpensive.

Roses are considered tolerant plants so pruning roses is important to keep them free from diseases and insects. If you follow these basic rules, your roses will flourish and live for many years. It only takes a little patience and your efforts will be well rewarded. <bio>Jo Williams has an interest in Home and Garden Topics.
One winter evening I was working on the computer when the power went out. The freezing rain that had been forecast must have been the culprit.

It was getting late so I went to bed figuring we would have power again by morning.

Thunder and lightning woke me a couple times, but then I heard something a little different. An explosive popping sound followed by what seemed to be a shower of sparks. In my minds eye I tried to picture the cause of this sound. An exploding power transformer with hot lines arcing around it? There is nothing like a puzzle to keep me awake; but I didn't want to get up and lose the warmth I had built up under the blankets. Just drifting off again I heard the sound repeated but up the hill behind my house and more distant... more crackly sounding but still accompanied by the sparkling shattering sound my ears were now more tuned in to analyze. Suddenly realizing the impact this freezing rain was having I shot out of bed and ran to the window. Large tree limbs were on the ground. Major branches were bending under the cumulative weight of the ice; then noisily busting sending thousands of 3" icicles to break with a sparkly shattering sound.

Well the power was out for days for many, and the damage to the trees and landscape is still being cleaned up. After a damaging storm you always see a migration of tree company trucks to the area. Many of the local tree care, and landscape businesses have their hands full assisting their customer base. The city workers are also busy as these crews and residents move debris to the street for collection. The effects of such a storm can be seen in the landscape for years to come.

Storms can cause limbs to break and trees to fall. A large damaged tree branch can be extremely heavy and dangerous to remove or trim.

Removing large branches from a mature tree safely requires special training and often specialized equipment. Also the way this damage is dealt with impacts on the health of the tree. If you value your trees (yes I know they are all valuable) or fear a tree becoming a hazard, I would suggest you find a certified arborist.

One good first test of an arborist is:

Tell them you need your trees topped.

If they say "Sure, no problem." move on till you find one that knows what is good for the long term health of a tree.

There are plenty of crews in your town that can carve up your trees for you; but it may take diligence to find a crew trained in the proper pruning of mature trees. Everyone appreciates the hardworking and practical service of the local jobber cleaning up a storms mess, but if you have issues with major branches of a large tree, do generations to come a favor and search out an International Society of Arboriculture certified arborist.

A good certified arborist with integrity will only perform ISA accepted practices. Branches are not removed without good reason. They do not "top" tree's, remove excessive amounts of live wood, or use climbing spikes on a tree (unless it is being removed). A good arborist knows how to make removal of a desirable tree the last option, and will make pruning decisions that will enhance the health of the tree and reduce possible hazards.

Pruning Cuts on a Mature Tree

Regardless who is doing the pruning or why, final pruning cuts should be made just outside a growth of bark cells called the branch collar. The branch collar is a collar of growth made of parent branch (trunk) tissue where the branch meets the trunk (or parent branch) and care should be taken to not cut or remove it. This is true for dead, damaged or living branches. Do not remove the actively growing cells of the branch collar. These cells are the trees way of closing the wound. The branch collar grows a bit out and angled away from the parent, so if you make a flush cut against the trunk, the branch collar has been removed and the wound will not close. Conversely if you cut far away from the trunk the branch collar is not near the cut where they can grow over the wound. Improper pruning cuts can hurt your trees.

Take notice of trees with dieback of the bark on branches and down the trunks. Often you can tell it was from a flush cut or an end cut. Other times it may be a storm damaged branch that wasn't removed and it died back to the trunk and on down.

If removing a large limb, first its weight should be reduced to prevent tearing the bark when the branch falls. Make a shallow cut from the bottom of the branch a foot or so out from the branches point of attachment. Then finish cut from the top, above or a little further out on the branch. This leaves a lighter and more manageable stub. The stub is then removed while taking care to not remove the branch collar. This technique reduces the possibility of tearing the bark. <bio>Residents of Shelby County Ohio have been bringing Lee pieces of trees, moldy leaves, and jars of bugs for years. Since this storm Lee has learned the value of a good standby generator. http://www.best-standby-generators.com </bio>

Keeping a healthy, clean garden takes time and effort. Pruning, weeding and pest control are three of the more fundamental tasks involved in cleaning your garden. Read on for a few tips to help you clean your garden.

There are two main reasons that pruning the roots of your trees and shrubs is important. The first reason is to prepare a tree or shrub for transplanting to a different location. For a smaller size plant, cut down straight all around the bush about sixteen to eighteen inches from the main stalk. You will want to cut down farther if it is a larger plant. You then leave the plant to grow new roots, but be sure to water the plant well for at least a month and fertilize as needed. You should prune the tree or shrub at least six weeks before moving it. A second reason pruning is important is to cure what is referred to as girdling. Girdling is when one of the larger underground roots, or sometimes a surface root, is turning onto the other roots and not spreading out or implanting itself into the soil as it should. Sometimes, you can actually see the root circling where it should not be but, other times, you can only see that the trunk goes straight down in certain sections rather than slanting in spots where there are roots. A straight trunk is a good sign that girdling is taking place. Be sure to remove all of the girdling roots to prevent these roots from strangling the tree and damaging its growth, eventually to the point of dieing.

Many gardeners prefer mulching over weeding, but there are times when weeding is necessary. When the plants are small, you need to pull out the weeds that could grow in and "choke" the flowers. Weeding is often an important step before you can even begin to mulch. Many weeds are, actually, beneficial either from their root exudates or sometimes for food. Deep-rooted weeds can bring good supplies of nitrogen up into the to the topsoil and the plants' stems. During tilling, the weeds will supply the soil with healthy nutrients and such which will help young plants grow.

Pest control is no fun in gardening, but fortunately you do not have to do a lot of work aside from the normal garden practices which tend to keep pests to a minimum. You should give plants a lot of room and air, ensure that they are not too damp unless required by the plant type and also plant them in sun or in shade, depending on what their needs require. Also, be sure to select disease-resistant varieties of plants and their companion plants. It is important to create a harmonious environment of living creatures, for example, bees on flowers and birds which are known for consuming insects. <bio>Focusing recent findings in wood processors, Greg Hansward published normally for http://www.insidewoodworking.com .
Tree removal service is basically in charge of services like limbing, tree removal, and tree pruning. As a company providing such service, it is a big responsibility and should be done professionally.

Tree removal service is necessary every now and then especially if you have trees that threaten to damage your house or property. It is also crucial when trees are blocking a driveway or sidewalk. Similarly, tree limbing is needed when there are too many branches hindering sunlight to pass into your house or garden. There a lot of do-it-yourself methods of tree removal and tree limbing. However, this job is not easy and requires immense expertise to do it safely.

Tree removal tools and equipments can be dangerous if mishandled. In this case, there is a need to hire <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/arborists" rel="tag">arborists or avail of tree removal service. An arborist has the necessary skills and know-how to do this specific job. Before deciding to seek for a tree removal service, it is vital to identify what are your specific needs. Here are some of these needs:

Grunt Work -- This work involves brush chipping and stump grinding of trees. Stump grinding is typically messy because wood chips will be scattered all around your house after the task.

Dangerous Work -- This operation includes taking away of partially broken limbs which are likely to fall in your estate or may cause injury to others. This procedure is called limbing. This delicate chore requires a reputable, expert tree removal company that offers insurance to its customers.

Tree Pruning Work -- It is a process of cutting damaged branches or other parts of the trees. This entails cutting only the damaged portion of the tree rather than hacking the whole tree. This method helps develop the tree to become strong and it also prevents it from endangering your possessions. It is important to hire certified arborist for this particular purpose.

Now that you have identified your specific needs, the next step is to find the best arborist or tree removal company. This is critical since you want to have the best outcome and want to save your possessions from any harm. Such work needs a professional tree removal service holding a high level of responsibility. Indeed, there are a lot of handymen roaming around your neighborhood with pickup trucks equipped with chainsaw but may not qualify with the demand of the job. There are also similar services asking for a down payment before any work is started but may not even provide any cost estimate.

As a consumer, you ought to first ask for estimate and detailed work plan. You must also demand for a written contract before even deciding to hire them for the specified assignment. If you value the tree that needs limbing, you must insist that the workman should not use any spike shoes since this will damage the tree. A good tree removal service would normally use ropes or aerial lift in order to accomplish the task.

If a risky work is required, it is crucial that you should verify if the tree removal company has insurance certificates. Then check the coverage of its liability. This will ensure you that you will not be liable in case there are accidents or serious harm takes place to property or anyone whilst the work is being done. In most cases, reputable tree removal companies know well how to handle difficult tasks. Such tasks are when the trees that need limbing are directly over electrical wires, telephone wires or other utilities.

Another thing to consider is that the tree removal service that you opt for should have a proof of certification from the Tree Care Industry Association before you agree to have them accomplish the work. Furthermore, it is a must that you confirm if the company will do the job in accordance to ANSI A300 standards. This will ensure that these guys won't execute anything that would cause permanent damage or death of the tree especially when doing limbing.

Lastly, you can ask your friends or neighbors who have already experienced hiring a tree removal service. Know from them if they were satisfied with the company they chose. You can even request the tree removal company for references of their past accomplishments. Remember, you own the property and you don't want anything untoward to happen. So be diligent in selecting the right tree removal company which will supply you the vital service without having any trouble.<bio>For more information on Stump Removal Methods please visit our website.</bio>

Those little trees with the matured and seemingly put-on roots around them are aptly called bonsai. They make for a very good indoor or outdoor décor for any home or commercial establishment. Every person who sees a bonsai will probably wonder whether they created by nature as such or if they are a product of the creative hands of man.

Bonsai is a Japanese word which refers to a tree placed in a tray, much like the way the modern bonsai plants look like. It is not just enough that an ideal tree species is chosen and dwarfed but the container where it is grown also adds to its value.

Bonsai growing usually starts as a hobby until a person gets enough experience and expertise in bonsai making to make his hobby a business. Bonsai growing is much like gardening but the difference lies in the skills necessary to produce the dwarfed trees.

The trees are dwarfed by regularly pruning the branches as well as the roots of the tree. A little bit of shaping and tugging is also necessary to keep the bonsai in the desired shape.

Bonsai growing is a painstaking hobby because a person can not produce beautiful bonsai trees in a day or two. A bonsai grower must wait for a long period, sometimes years to see the beauty of his creation come to life.

There are basically five bonsai styles which include the formal upright style, the informal upright style, slanting, cascade and semi-cascade style. These basic bonsai styles can already produce beautiful bonsai trees but growers are looking for more advanced styles to keep up with the growing demand for bonsai.

Bonsai growing is so dynamic that growers have developed advanced styles of bonsai trees. The advanced styles of growing bonsai however get their inspiration from the basic bonsai styles.

One of the advanced bonsai styles is known as Fukinagashi or what is commonly known as the windswept style. This style aims to personify the effects of nature through the bonsai design. The

The Bankan or Twisted style aptly follows the shapes taken by a dragon as the style seems to have gotten inspiration from the Chinese. Bonsai trees following this style may look like a roaring dragon or other forms taken by the dragon.

The Bunjin or Literati style of pruning bonsai is the simplest of the advanced styles of bonsai growing.

Growing bonsai can be therapeutic but it can also be a good money-making venture. The hobbyist should keep himself abreast of the latest bonsai styles so he will be able to present new designs to his clients. Bonsai growing basically stems from love of plants but somehow, it is also tied up with creativity and patience <bio>Owner of http://www.mishobonsai.com , he been practicing bonsai for a decade. The Mangosteen trees are grown in Asia, Africa, India and some areas in Central and South America. The trees are very sensitive to cold weather and anything below 45 degrees Fahrenheit will kill these trees.

The Mangosteen trees are very difficult to grow because these trees like lots of humidity and rain, but do not like the soil to be too wet. The trees do not like higher elevations, salt air, cold weather, and sandy or silt soil. They do like to grow in Asia and Africa, below 200 degrees latitude, then rain forest conditions, the way from the coast and in rich loamy soil.

The Mangosteen tree starts to produce when they are about ten years old. The Mangosteen fruit are small (1-3 inches) and purple. The top of the fruit has a small Rosette-shaped blossom remnant with 4 to 8 the triangular segments.

The Mangosteen fruits have two parts to them; a white center fruit and a purple outer hull. The White center part of the fruit is divided into different segments. There's one segment for each triangle in the blossom remnant. The white part of the fruit it is well known for its flavor and some people feel that this fruit is one of the most delicious fruits in the world.

The outer part of the Mangosteen fruit this thick and purple. It does contain bitter latex and the purple juice itself it is a permanent dye. The Mangosteen fruit has over 40 different xanthones and the outer rind it is one of the richest sources of sxanthones in the world.

Where Can I Buy The Mangosteen Fruit?

You can purchase them Mangosteen fruit wherever it is grown. It can be a challenge to purchase the Mangosteen fruit locally because the food itself it is very picky about its shipping conditions.

Probably the best way to enjoy the benefits of the Mangosteen fruit is to drink it as a juice. Drinking the mangosteen juice maybe even healthier then eating the whole fruit by itself because the juice is made from the whole fruit.

Try going to your local health food store and ask them if they carry Mangosteen juice. Another way to purchase some Mangosteen fruit juice it is to look for some independent distributors. Go online and do search for Mangosteen juice and you will find lots of local distributors within your area. <bio>Kerry Ng is a successful Webmaster and publisher of The Mangosteen Blog.
Everybody has heard of the Bonsai tree but very few people know anything about the history of the miniature shrub or where the tradition came from.

Bonsai is a Japanese term which, in its native language, translates to mean "tray gardening". This term describes exactly what bonsai is as it is a tree which is grown in a small pot or tub enabling it to be kept indoors. These trees are not always genetically predisposed to be small and so they are kept this way through careful pruning. The ability to care for a bonsai tree, keeping it small and healthy, is an art form in itself. The trees are commonly pruned in to an aesthetically pleasing shape, another reason why they are seen as works of art and not just as plants.

The term bonsai is widely known and understood and yet the art was originally found in China, by the name of penjing. The Japanese art of bonsai stemmed from this and so is actually more modern than the Chinese. However, the Japanese version is the one which is more widely known.

Discoveries have been made in Egyptian tombs of sketches showing miniature trees in pots. These are thought to have been kept for decorative purposes and the pictures date back to 4000 years ago! After this time there is evidence to suggest that trees were transported in the caravans of Asia as they travelled around as they were used for their medicinal properties should someone have fallen ill.

The art of bonsai as we know it stems from the Chinese art of penjing, which is a 2000 year old tradition. It was brought to Japan somewhere between the 7th -- 9th centuries by the Imperial Embassies to Tang China. Initially it was enjoyed only by the nobility and was not a hobby which was enjoyed by the masses. However, over time it began to filter down through the social hierarchy and became something which much of the population enjoyed.

The practise of pruning and shaping miniature trees is still in place in both China and Japan. However, the Chinese tend to keep them for outdoor displays and so, although still smaller than normal trees, they are somewhat larger than the Japanese versions, who create the pieces of art to be displayed primarily in the home.

For anyone considering turning their hand to this hobby, it is well worth reading up on the subject beforehand as the trees require careful nurturing. It is not just the leaves which require trimming, the roots need to be tended to also and the amount of water they require is practically an art form in itself. Information on this is widely available on the Internet, meaning that anyone serious about trying this should be able to do so successfully. <bio>The author is a regular contributor to Best Bonsai Supply http://www.bestbonsaisupply.com where more information about bonsai trees, plants, pots and other bonsai supplies is freely available. </bio>

Bonsai trees are diminutive and exquisite examples of larger trees. To keep them small, they spend their lives in shallow containers. Just about any type of tree can be a bonsai. Nurseries and some stores carry beginner bonsai trees, which are just waiting for you to train them into a lovely design. Prior to training a bonsai, it is essential that you understand what is about to take place.

Pointers on Beginner Bonsai Trees

To further develop beginner bonsai trees, some parts of the plants will need to be removed in order to create fine-looking presentations. Beginner bonsai trees have no planned shape when you first get them. Therefore, their future motifs will be entirely up to the whims of their new owners.

It is possible to choose from many bonsai styles. Some of the more popular and less complicated ones include the windswept, cascade, slanting, formal upright, informal upright and the bunjin designs. Hobbyists about to grow beginner bonsai trees are able to select any style they will be happy with. While making the purchase, notice if a certain bonsai tree already has a tendency toward a specific shape. Does it have a crooked trunk or branches that suit a particular form? Carefully taking the time to observe the features of a new bonsai can be greatly rewarding, as well as inspiring.

Invest time in learning how to prune both the crown and the roots of your beginner bonsai trees. Pruning implies cutting off specific parts to encourage more growth or to engender a hearty plant. Repotting and pruning of the beginner Bonsai trees also encourage them to grow faster. Further, you will need to replace the container of your bonsai repeatedly every one or two years to stimulate continued health and in order to access the roots for pruning. This will also encourage faster growth, which can mean more pruning will be needed.

Since many varities of bonsai trees which have been shipped from tropical or subtropical regions, are not able to withstand cold and the shallow bonsai containers can freeze when left outside in winter snow and cold, it is recommended that you bring your beginner bonsai trees inside during the cold season in your area.

To prevent the soil from drying out too quickly, it is best to place beginner bonsai trees away from inside heat sources such as radiators. The container can also be placed on top of some pebbles in a shallow water dish to keep the humidity up around the plant. The container should not be directly in the water, just above it. Also, make sure the bonsai plants are not left too close to windows, because excess cold can stress a tree to the point of death.
The shoreline of the Ogeechee River is densely imbedded with a little known fruit tree called the, "Ogeechee Lime" Nyssa ogeechee, that could easily demand attention from farmers, who are looking for a secondary crop. Local landowners, and those who fish on the banks of the river, are familiar with this tree that can grow 30-40 ft. tall, and in the Fall, the leaves and the oval shaped fruit turn a brilliant scarlet in color. The fruit or berry is about 1-2 inches long and reaches the approximate size of a large kumquat with an agreeable acid flavor, that is similar to limes or other citrus. The fruit is used to flavor foods and drinks, when the juice is released, or it can be used in preserves and the canning of such items as jellies and jams by the local inhabitants.

Many botanists in the past centuries observed that Ogeechee Limes were found growing in colonies with roots underwater, and therefore, they naturally recommended that a planting of this tree should only be done in a bog garden. There are trees planted in the Arboretum garden at the Coastal Plains Experiment Station at Tifton, Ga that are mature and growing well in well drained soil. These trees produce bushels of fruit in the fall that is exceedingly enjoyed by children and adults.

The famous, early American explorer, William Bartram, when traveling through Georgia in 1793 wrote, "I saw large, tall trees of the Nyssa ogeechee growing on the banks of the river, there is no tree that exhibits a more desirable appearance than this, in the autumn, when the fruit is ripe, and the tree is divested of its leaves, for then they look as red as scarlet, with their fruit which is of that color also. It is of the shape, but larger than the olive, containing an agreeable acid juice. The most northern settlement of this tree, yet known, is on the great Ogeechee River, where they are called Ogeechee Limes, and they are being sometimes used in their stead ".

These trees are dependable producers every year of unbelievable masses of fruit, that when dead- ripe in September falls to the ground after changing color from green to a spectacular scarlet. The trees can also be shook by hand to collect the limes as they fall to the ground on sheets. Many local people prefer to gather the fruit as the limes begin to change color, looking much like green 'Nagami' kumquats in appearance and size. Someday this American native tree will become a very important commercial fruit producer. The fruit from these trees is remarkable in being uniform in size. The trees should be planted in partial shade or the full sun and require frequent irrigation for maximum production, however, they require no fertilization and pest and diseases are no problem. The trees are self-pollinating.

The pollen of Ogeechee Lime is considered to be very important for bees that make honey called, "Tupelo Honey." This unusual product is considered to be gourmet quality by specialty stores. <bio>Patrick A. Malcolm, owner of TyTy Nursery, has an M.S. degree in Botany and has been cultivating ogeechee lime trees for sale for decades. http://www.tytyga.com </bio>
