I bought this beautiful, huge <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/peach" rel="tag">peach</a> and left hopeful, and hungry at the thought of this lavish, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fresh" rel="tag">fresh</a>, succulent piece of heaven. *A fresh peach, it brought back memories of when I was about 6 years old, when we had several <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fruit+trees" rel="tag">fruit trees</a> in the backyard. Us kids used to gorge ourselves on the peaches, plums, apricots, and oranges. My mom made <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/jams" rel="tag">jams</a> and pies. Um, this beautiful peach I couldn't wait, even to get it back and wash it. I just figured, well, a few tree germs, I can handle. A good healthy peach, with all the fuzz. Fresh fuzz. Natural fuzz. I turned the peach over and over in my hands. I rubbed my fingers over the peach, feeling the fuzz, trying to rub it off. Thinking of youth, playing, fresh fruit, cobblers, jams, fresh bread. <br /><br /> I bit into the peach. <br /><br /> It was the perfect peach, *until I tasted it. I really enjoyed contemplating the peach much more than the actual taste, flavor and texture of the peach itself. In a way, I regret eating the peach. It wasn't very sweet. It was ripe but didn't have a particularly strong peachy flavor, and yet, for all its lack of vitamins, and nutritious wholesomeness, it was one of the best peach experiences of my life.*I'm sure there is a lesson in here somewhere. Maybe it is the gift of the memories of youth, perhaps it is a gift letting me know that small things in life can instill a sense of happiness, perhaps the gift is a sign for hope for the future, or the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/satisfaction" rel="tag">satisfaction</a> in being able to look with wonder and joy at past experiences in my life. It is well known that fresh produce maintains a higher nutritional value than processed produce. <br /><br /> Freezing foods is relatively simple. Although there are a few things you should take into consideration before you start. Become familiar with types of containers used in home freezing. Learn how to wrap food for freezing, and most important pay particular attention to storage time on foods you prepare and freeze. <br /><br /> There are several containers one can use. To prevent freezer burn, it is important to get as much of the air out of the container as possible. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/tupperware" rel="tag">Tupperware</a> type containers as a rule are good for most freezable <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/food+stuff" rel="tag">food stuff</a>. When using freezer wraps, wrap the food tightly, and it is also smart to slip that wrapped food into a freezer bag. <br /><br /> Blanching or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/steaming+vegetables" rel="tag">steaming vegetables</a> before freezing them will inactivate harmful enzymes. These enzymes can cause your vegetables to loss vitamins, and flavor. <br /><br /> Some fruits are not blanched however, but instead, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is used to control enzymes. Lemon juice also may be used to prevent darkening of fruits, but is not as effective as ascorbic acid. Packing fruit in sugar or sugar syrup also will help prevent browning. <br /><br /> Blanching also helps destroy harmful microorganisms that can be found on the surface of vegetables, and fruit. As you can surmise it is important to following the recommendations for blanching any produce you are intending to freeze. Over blanching will results in an over cooked product that will most likely lose its flavor, color, and nutrients. <br /><br /> Freezing Fruit: <br /><br /> To freeze fruit, wash and then cut fruit into sections. Fruits need to be steamed for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Cool before packing into a container, making sure to pack fruit in slightly tight. After the fruit has been put into the container, fill with liquid. There are two liquids that can use to complete the fruit for freezing. One unsweetened fruit pack or syrup fruit pack. The liquid you decide to use is your preference. After the fruit has cooled, you then fill the container with your choice of liquid, leaving 1/2 inch head space and then add cooled liquid leaving 1/2 inch head space. Freeze. <br /><br /> Recipe for Syrup: <br /><br /> Light syrup: 2 cups sugar, 4 cups boiling water. Stir in sugar until dissolved, remove from heat cool. <br /><br /> Recipe for Unsweetened Liquid: <br /><br /> 1/2 teaspoon ascorbic acid, 1 quart boiled water cooled. <br /><br /> The ascorbic acid keeps the fruits color bright. <br /><br /> Most fruits should be eaten within 6 months after freezing date. (Please consult a freezing time chart for recommended safe length of time to store fruit you will be freezing) <br /><br /> Freezing Vegetables: <br /><br /> Freezing vegetables are very easy. All vegetables will need to be either steamed, for small sized vegetables such as peas, beans or vegetables that become soft quickly, like celery, cucumbers and such. The other method in preparing vegetables for freezing is blanching in boiling water. Most vegetable will need to be blanched for 2-4 minutes. After the vegetables are blanched or steam blanched, plunge them into ice water, to stop the blanching process. Cool well, pack in appropriate air tight container, and freeze. Most vegetables have a storage time of 6 - 8 months. Carrots are supposed to be good for you, but they contain high amounts of carbs, sugar, and calories. Ask yourself and do a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/goggle+search" rel="tag">goggle search</a> (or a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pub+med" rel="tag">PUB Med</a> or any advanced search of scientific articles) about how many times you see a study--any study--on a particular <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fruit" rel="tag">fruit</a> or vegetable that comes out proving some <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/health+improvement" rel="tag">health improvement</a>. Not a group, but a particular fruit or vegetable. And proof of health, not disease (this is an important distinction). <br /><br /> We are talking about real science here not just made up stuff from some science nut or <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/health+nut" rel="tag">health nut</a>. And we are talking about real <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fruits+and+vegetables" rel="tag">fruits and vegetables</a> like a particular apple or broccoli as opposed to a group of fruits or vegetables. In other words we are talking about something very concrete and not at all abstract--this is where real scientific study comes in very handy: such study is not abstract or it is not science. And, importantly, if I can prove it and you cannot, it is not scientifically provable. Period. <br /><br /> How many? Which vegetable? Which fruit? <br /><br /> There are plenty of promoters of eating <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fresh+fruits" rel="tag">fresh fruits</a> and vegetables and many of them provide solid credentials like the Harvard, Tufts, Eat 5 a day, and so on (for a really good goggle search try vegetables and health or fruits and health).  <br /><br /> For example, the Harvard site cites the latest dietary guidelines that, "call for five to thirteen servings of fruits and vegetables a day, depending on one's caloric intake. For a person who needs 2,000 calories a day to maintain weight and health, this translates into nine servings, or 4Â cups per day." The citation for this is The USDA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is a helpful abstraction but not a particular guide to particular fruits and vegetables and how they can promote your health. <br /><br /> But most of what these prestigious institutions promote is air--no scientific studies demonstrating the health effects of a single fruit or vegetable could be found on the Harvard site, not one. True, it's nice air, but air nevertheless. <br /><br /> Now we are not talking about the genuine research on fruits and vegetables like this one listed in Pub Med, "Electron beam and gamma irradiation effectively reduce Listeria monocytogenes populations on chopped romaine lettuce", (J Food Prot. 2006 Mar;69(3):570-4, for those who need to know) . This kind of research is not after the health promoting effects of eating, in this case, romaine lettuce. And it does not pretend to be anything other than what it is. <br /><br /> Of course sites promoting the health benefits of eating of fruits and vegetables could be hiding the scientific studies and don't want to bother their visitors with all those numbers and scientific names for turnips or plums. Or farmers who grow the really good stuff and how to buy them. <br /><br /> I remember a study concerning folate and green leafy vegetables and some kids on an island in the South Pacific. The study, a genuine scientific study, had to be halted because the scientists found that the children in the study could not get enough folate for their diets from the fresh vegetables because the vegetables themselves were deficient. So the study stopped because, ethically, depriving the children's diet of this essential ingredient could hurt them--especially when the science proved the children would be deficient on a natural diet. So much for the health promoting benefits of this entire group of vegetables--and I have not seen another study to refute this single isolated, particular controlled scientific study on green leafy vegetable and exactly how they promote health in humans. <br /><br /> So how do you know if the fruits or vegetables you eat can really promote better health? Simple answer is you don't. But then again, if you stopped eating fruits and vegetables what would happen? How could anything that's been dehydrated, processed in a factory, stored in a bottle for months or years ever be more healthy and nutritious than a fresh <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ripe+apple" rel="tag">ripe apple</a> or a head of broccoli? <br /><br /> "Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth society will flourish." - Warren Buffett <br /><br /> Science has been telling us for over 30 years that eating <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fresh+fruits+and+vegetables" rel="tag">fresh fruits and vegetables</a> lowers our risks for heart disease, cancer, and stroke (among many, many other benefits). And what are the current leading causes of death? That's right - heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Get it? It's simple. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables (organic if possible). <br /><br /> Health enthusiasts focus on getting enough Vitamins C and E (the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/antioxidant+vitamins" rel="tag">antioxidant vitamins</a>) and wonder if they are deficient in this mineral or that. I have no issue with that, because we are sincerely trying to improve our health. My own opinion, though, is that there are probably countless more unidentified micronutrients in a simple thing like an orange or kiwi or cantaloupe or sprig of parsley that scientists haven't yet identified. In fact there are probably many more nutrients that you ingest when eating a whole fruit or vegetable that work together in some synergistic way that is not yet fully understood. The point is that by taking a vitamin supplement, you are receiving only one-isolated slice of the nutrient profile that is otherwise available from eating the whole fruit or vegetable, not to mention the fiber. Just this year, scientists from Cornell University announced that the common apple contains unique combinations of thousands of phytochemicals that somehow seem to be working together as antioxidants to retard tumor growth in cell cultures and animals. <br /><br /> Now I am not arguing against taking a multi-vitamin or mineral supplement; I just think we can do better. <br /><br /> Nature has extracted many highly-nutritive components from the soil, absorbed them through the root system of a fruit tree or vegetable plant and created a ready made, nutritious food for all of us to consume. It's what we are supposed to be eating! To attempt to replace all of these micronutrients by taking a tablet containing 500mg of synthetic Vitamin C just doesn't seem nearly as good, does it? How could it possibly compare? So I say, let the scientists continue to experiment and isolate all of the wonderful compounds that are contained in fresh fruits and vegetables over the next hundred or even thousand years. It may result in loss of consciousness, paralysis or death. <br /><br /> Good nursing care is of utmost importance, especially during the acute stage. The patient should be made to rest in bed, and he should be turned frequently from side to side to prevent development of pressure sores. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cold+compresses" rel="tag">Cold compresses</a> may be applied to the head to relieve pain. The patient should be protected from visitors and all forms of excitement. He should not return to work for several months. <br /><br /> The most important factor in treating this disease is fasting. The patient should fast for the first few days and he should be given only water to drink, if he can take it. Thereafter, he may be given orange juice and water. The fast should be continued till the severity of the stroke has passed off. He can then be allowed to take fresh fruits such as orange, apple, pineapple, pear, grapes, peach and papaya. The diet can be extended to include fresh and unboiled milk, and as convalescence progresses, the fruit and milk diet can be gradually followed by a well-balanced diet consisting of seeds, nuts and grains, fruits and vegetables. The emphasis should be on fresh fruits and raw <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/vegetable+salads" rel="tag">vegetable salads</a> and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fruit+and+vegetable+juices" rel="tag">fruit and vegetable juices</a>. <br /><br /> The patient should be encouraged to use the paralyzed limbs and move all the joints several times daily. The paralyzed muscles should be gently massaged. As soon as possible, the patient should come out of bed and walk around the room.
