Keeping those animals in our lives healthy means that critter will be in our life for longer living a high quality of life. In addition, a healthier animal will not cost as much because of veterinarian costs. All forms of four legged critters would benefit from the MSM supplementation many humans are now experiencing themselves. The great thing is that they get the same benefits as us with the same safe results.

Four legged critters suffer from the same arthritis and pans associated with aging. As animals age, they will get those aches and pains, and not all animals can be treated successfully. MSM supplements afford that four legged critter to get around like he or she did when he or she was just a wee little friend. These are animals that are our friends, family, and sometimes, our careers are closely tied to these same animals.

When it comes to animals, there are two major costs: food and veterinary. As the animal ages, the veterinarian costs rise as the need for more visits becomes necessary. Now, instead of just getting an annual checkup and vaccination, you may be faced with monthly visits due to tired and aching joints. MSM few to these ailing animals were reported healthier with less aches and pains. In fact, one horse after taking these supplements was able to continue a jumping career that won him many rewards and honors.

For horses, adding one tablespoon or 15 grams of crystal flakes to the diet twice a day is ideal. If your horse is exceptionally large or small, you can figure out the amount to feed by taking the animals weight and dividing it by 100. You will want to feed one gram per 100 pounds of weight twice a day. Add the flakes directly to the feed or core an apple or favorite treat, and add the flakes to the middle. This is a great snack and extremely healthy!

For dogs and cats, you will want to feed 500 mgs or 1/8 tablespoon per 25 pounds of body weight. Since this is tasteless and odorless, you will find adding it to moist food or water is a great way to get them the MSM supplement they need.

On another note, it is important to note this is one of the supplements safe for cats. Felines have a sensitive system when it comes to pain killers. Their bodies are not capable of processing most painkillers such as aspirin or NSAIDS. In fact, one pill can be fatal to your cat. Never give your cat pain killer without first speaking to a veterinarian or researching thoroughly first.

When it comes to feeding MSM supplements to your four legged critters, you will find they get the same superb benefits from stronger nails, shinier hair, and less arthritis pains. Even their allergies are made better by these types of supplements. Just insure you know the right dosage before you feed these to your pets. Of course, speak with your veterinarian about adding any type of supplement to your pets diet. Better safe than sorry!<bio>Nance Leighton operates Arthritis MSM Supplements, Inc out of Houston, Texas.
I have always had a soft spot for dogs, each has their own unique character and charm. I also seem to attract them like a magnet. Case in point, I have just moved to a sleepy small town in Mississippi and have already made a 'new best friend,' a rather timid four legged creature that lives across the street. I have no clue what his or her name is. I call it 'Scardy Dog.' I just have to make an appearance on the porch and it comes running over to say hello. It also has great road sense, stopping at the curb and looking both ways before crossing. It is also scared of its shadow, one quick movement and it is off like a jack rabbit.

Kim Pearson and Anne Lindsay clearly share my affinity with our four legged friends, and Dog Park Diary is an exquisitely executed and highly amusing look at their pets, and their pets' best friends.

The action takes place in Robinswood Dog Park in Bellevue, Washington. A sanctuary where those pesky leashes can be discarded, and dogs can be dogs. This is the social apex for dogs that live in the neighborhood.

The hero of the story is one Dr. Jane Goodall Beagle, but as she explains most people just call her Goody. Goody is our guide and mentor in this voyage of doggy discovery. One of the first lessons that Goody introduces us to is doggy etiquette and the importance of playing 'sniff-butt,' this is the doggy equivalent of us humans saying 'hello, how are you today,' but also a lot more, you can tell if the other dog is sad or happy, friend of foe. As Goody puts it:

I think humans should do 'sniff-butt' too. Maybe they wouldn't fight so often.

They would look pretty funny though.

I enjoyed Dog Park Diary and Goody's explanation of the dog world. Although this book could be seemed to be aimed at the children's market it does contain some aspects that maybe a parent would not want to deal with, with their young children. Bodily functions are always a huge attraction to youngsters, and bodily functions do get a mention or two.

The photography by Anne Lindsay is superb, it matches the text so well. Both creators of this book deserve huge credit. While this may seem a very niche work, it is well worth seeking out. I really enjoyed it. Using minimal text Kim Pearson tells the story in a way that makes every word count. Goody takes on a personae from the very first page. Pointing out early on that she is a 'she dog', and as such has manners, not like those rowdy male dogs! "Some even pee in the water bowl" she tells us with disgust.

Dog Park Diary may not be the stuff that makes the New York Times best seller list, but I am sure it will find its way into the homes of many dog lovers.

You can order your copy from Amazon.<bio>Simon Barrett is an adult educator in Calgary, Alberta. While dry dog food can be included in your dog's diet in a limited way, most products are very high in simple carbohydrates, relatively low in protein and of inferior nutritional quality. Furthermore, it is very bad for dogs to eat food that doesn't contain natural moisture.

The heavy use of commercially prepared dry dog food by dog owners is a leading cause of rising incidence of canine diabetes and associated pancreatitis. Doing a search on "dry dog food" on the internet will lead to a lot of websites and articles encouraging the use of this product, yet the purpose behind these articles is to sell dry dog food. So how reliable is this information really? The only safe and healthy dry dog food is likely to also be organic and contain high levels of protein and include complex carbohydrates in the form of whole grains. Even so, organic dry dog food should still be used sparingly. It should not be all that you feed your dog.

To maintain good health, dogs need a largely natural diet. The best diet is a raw diet that also incorporates healthy scraps from the family and raw dog bones. If this isn't possible, feeding your dog commercially prepared organic food from a reputable company can provide most of your dog's nutritional needs. Organic dry dog food can be added to this diet or given your dog as a treat, but should not be the only thing you feed your dog.

We have become a very convenience oriented society. We are busy and often stressed by the demands of earning a living and raising children. It is so much easier to pour food out of a box or open a can (and even then we'd rather have ring-pull cans) and we can fall into the trap of living on autopilot and feeding our animals and our families food that is of poor nutritional value and that can actually be a health hazard. Let's switch back to manual control and pay attention to what we are doing. Our family - both four legged and two legged members - will look and feel better and even if they don't thank us, we'll know who they have to thank. <bio>Lee Dobbins writes for http://www.dogbreeds123.com where you can learn more about dog breeds, dog care and the best dog food for your dog. </bio>

For much of the world, retirement can seem like a long ways away. Most of us have a feeling that things will just work themselves out. The reality is, you have to take care of yourself and your family and that no one else is going to do it for you.

We have been trained to believe that we will be safe because of the 3 legged stool of retirement planning. Those three legs are social security, pensions, and 401(k)'s. We need to be aware of the perils of relying on these three legs to hold us up for when we retire.

Almost everyone knows that social security is in trouble. The promise of social security is that there will always be enough workers to support the smaller amount of retired and disabled people who collect social security checks.

The problem is that we are spending social security funds at a rate that will not be able to keep up with the growing number of persons collecting it compare to the amount of workers contributing to it.

andquot;By the year 2042, the entire system would be exhausted and bankrupt,andquot; said President George W. Bush not long ago. He also appealed to parents: andquot;If you've got children in their 20s ... the idea of Social Security collapsing before they retire does not seem like a small matter.andquot;

Pensions have also not been all they are cracked up to be. State and local governments in New York, New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Vermont and Colorado are among the many who are feeling the crunch of a lack of funds in public pensions. It is calculated that as of 2003, the 123 largest state and city funds were around $366 billion short of meeting their retirement funding liabilities as a whole, and a whopping $611 million turnaround from where they stood in 2000.

One of the main problems with 401(k)'s is that they are not liquid enough. If an emergency comes up, there are heavy penalties for early withdrawal. Another problem is that there are many who spend their 401(k) money too quickly when they retire. If they run out before the end of their lives, they will be left with nothing but Social Security and any other savings they might have.

I am not saying that a 401(k) us a bad thing, it can be a good part of financial planning. You just have to be disciplined in managing it well and not putting all your nest eggs in this one basket. <bio>For ideas and information about retirement planning the website http://www.ourtimenow.com is a great resource for those that are already retired or are planning for retirement </bio>

When warm weather rolls around, families around the nation need to be aware of tick-borne illnesses and how they can affect not only pets, but people too. One of the greatest misconceptions about tick-borne illnesses is that you would have to spend a lot of time in the wilderness when, in fact, you can become infected in your own backyard. The key to prevention is through knowledge and care.

Lyme disease is a potentially serious ailment that stems from the black-legged deer tick but, despite their title, these carriers aren't only found on deer. In fact, your dog could unknowingly have been infected or could pass along the tick that could infect an individual or even a family. The best way to know how to prevent this from occurring is to speak with a veterinarian regarding the specific concerns for your area. Although Lyme Disease has been reported in all 50 states, there are other tick-borne illnesses that may also pose a health risk to your pet and your family.

The next step to protecting your family and pet against tick-borne illnesses is to be aware of the symptoms and how to identify them properly. As is the case with many symptoms, one ailment often sounds very similar to another. For this reason alone, certain signs may go overlooked. A loss of appetite, depression, pain in the muscles and/or joints, weight loss, fever are all potential symptoms of a tick-borne illness. If any of these symptoms appear, it's wise to seek medical attention for a proper diagnosis.

If you are a pet owner, make sure that your veterinarian checks your pet for tick-borne illnesses annually. In addition, you can help by checking his/her coat every day for ticks and, if recommended by your vet, use a preventative medicine for your four-legged friend.

By protecting your pet and being aware of your surroundings, you can also help to protect your family from becoming ill. When outdoors, it's a good idea to wear full-length pants and a long sleeve shirt. If you will be spending a lot of time in the woods, hiking boots can be worn and pants should be tucked inside to prevent infection.

The information contained in this article is designed to be used for reference purposes only.
Lyme disease is primarily spread to both dogs and humans through the bite of an infected tick. Many different species of ticks can be involved, including the deer tick, the western black-legged tick, and the black legged tick. Ticks are tiny parasites that are difficult to see with the naked eye and can easily hide on people and pets.

Ticks, however, are not the only way the disease can be spread, fleas and other biting insects are capable of spreading it as well. There have been incidents in which Lyme disease has been transmitted by direct contact with infected body fluids. This ease of transmission has made Lyme disease one of the most commonly reported tick-borne diseases.

The symptoms of Lyme disease in dogs include lethargy, loss of appetite, high fever, swollen lymph nodes and joint, and/or a sudden onset of lameness. Veterinarians have the ability to test for this disease in house and should be consulted immediately if any of the symptoms develop. Rapid treatment of a diagnosed case of Lyme disease is essential to prevent permanent damage to the joints on internal organs.

To lessen your dogs chances of contracting lyme disease, you should vaccinate him. After the initial immunization, a booster is recommended three weeks later, followed thereafter by annual re-vaccinations. The symptoms of Lyme disease in humans are similar to those found in dogs, and vaccination of the family dog will help to prevent the spread to humans.

A tick must feed on the host for approximately 24 hours before spread of the disease takes place. When you return from an outing, carefully check your dog's skin and coat, including the groin, around the ears and tail and between the toes. If a tick is found, remove it immediately with an alcohol swab and tweezers. After applying the alcohol to the tick, carefully pull the tick upwards. Try not to squeeze the tick while removing it as this may force bacteria from the tick, back into the animal.

If possible, save the tick in a jar or sealed container. If the dog becomes sick or exhibits any of the symptoms described earlier, your veterinarian can identify the type of tick to aid in the choice of antibiotics to use. When it comes to ticks, do not take any chances. <bio>Randy Jones and his partner Brent Jones have been in the pet industry for a long time.
For entrepreneurs who love pets, the Shure Pets opportunity may be just what you need! This is a very unique opportunity that was created by Andrew Shure at a time when pet parties did not exist. When you join this opportunity, you have access to over three hundred different products that the company has for sale. This includes anything from premium and luxurious pet shampoo to vitamins and even pet themed gifts for people who love their furry friends.

Shure Pets works just like some of the most popular opportunities out there. A consultant who signs up to help sell the products will make a base commission of 25% on each product that they sell. So, if you're a consultant and you sell a product that costs $100.00, you automatically make $25.00.

The trick in selling these Shure Pet products is this -- you get to have a party! It simply works like this; you get a volunteer who will host the party at their home. This volunteer will receive points toward free products from the company. Then, that volunteer will give you names of their friends, associates, co-workers or family and those people will be invited to the party.

While you have a great time at the party, you also show off some of the coolest Shure Pets products that are available. Of course, the people at the party will decide if they want to purchase something and if they do, you make a percentage. You may be wondering just what kind of income you can make with this opportunity.

Well, the average reported party sales are around $400.00 and the party doesn't take that long to set up. Factoring in the time you spend 'working' at the party, along with your 25% commission, you can make $25 to $30 an hour easily. The greatest part is you decide how many parties to have and how often, so you really do set your own limits as far as income.

Because people are so emotionally attached to their pets, and really, pets have become just like family members for these people, this is an opportunity where you can make a good deal of money. Many consultants for Shure Pets are retired veterinarians or they work with animals daily and use this opportunity as a way to make extra money on the side. You don't have to work with animals to be a Shure Pets consultant though; all it takes is a love for animals and a great attitude. Oh, and it takes a desire to make money doing something other than a typical 9 to 5 job.

Although many people think that the 25% commission is a little low, the truth is that this is a really good income opportunity and the products have a specific and very large target market. The chances of selling are great because people who love animals enough to attend a pet party are more than likely going to purchase something for their four legged friends. Shure Pets is a great opportunity for anyone to make extra money doing something unique and fun.<bio>You can read our Unbiased, expert review of Shure Pets from Brian Garvin and Jeff West at MLM Review Kings.
Yoga pants are some of the most popular athletic wear available in stores today. Choosing the right pair of any pants is always difficult, however, there are so many varieties of yoga pants that choosing the pants either for lounging or exercise can also be a challenge.

Everyday Yoga Pants

It seems that the most popular "running around" pants are also yoga pants. Many of these closely resemble wide legged jogging pants but are often made of natural fiber such as cotton or hemp and are a thinner material for ease of movement.

Other popular styles of yoga pants include capri, knee length, straight leg, "boot" flair, and even tight fitting or bloomer style pants. With all the fancy names it can be confusing exactly which pair to choose. For the summer, capri pants are always comfortable and the knee length yoga pants fit much like gauchos. These types of pants are comfortable like jogging pants but look stylish. They can be perfect for around the house, when running out for milk, or picking the kids up from school.

Straight leg yoga pants are probably the most popular style for every day wear. The straight leg design is flattering for most figures and many have a wide elastic waist that stays in place. The alternate waist band is often a draw string; drawstring pants tend to feel more comfortable at a low rise or ultra-low rise position. Also some yoga pants have a roll down waist, which can be particularly comfortable for people who will be gaining weight through pregnancy or losing weight through exercise.

Yoga Pants for Exercise

Yoga pants are of course intended for exercise. When used for their intended purpose trying the pants on is essential as they must feel comfortable in many positions. The yoga pants should be loose fitting enough to allow a complete range of movement without cutting into the skin or restricting the legs in any way.

A tee shirt in soft comfortable material pairs well with yoga pants for exercise. Wearing velvet hooded sweat shirt, a sweater, or small fitting hooded sweatshirt will look the best while traveling to or from lessons. These will also compliment the yoga pants for running errands.

Shoes are often not worn in class, however, en route to lessons or general running around athletic shoes will complement the total outfit. Sometimes casual sandals such as crocks or flip-flops will look nice with the capri style or wide legged yoga pants. <bio>Ann Marier writes informative articles about family life and general health issues, Her lastest are about losing weight with yoga.
You can have a spectacular party for your dog with a few tips on how to set things up and on how to get things done. Planning is the key to getting the party running successfully and knowing beforehand what needs to be done, what you need to buy, who to invite and where to have the party will help to give you and your beloved pet the kind of party that is both fun and memorable.

Why you are celebrating is up to you. It could be your pet's birthday, graduation from dog school or a doggy shower. Whatever the reason, you will need to plan around that occasion and come up with ideas that will make your pet, your guests, and your guests' pets enjoy the day immensely.

Start Off with a Motif for Your Doggy Party

Some people may think that any motif will do for a doggy party, but hey, if you are celebrating an occasion for your pet, why not do it the right way? The motif for your pet's party may depend on the occasion itself. If its a birthday, you may want to put the usual birthday type decorations for your dog's birthday, although you might want to think more in terms of doggy d=E9cor, like bones with ribbons, smaller party hats and such.

If the party is for his doggy school graduation, you can have a graduation style motif for your party. Or if it is a puppy shower, you can have a shower motif, like small baby bottles and hanging mobiles to help give out that baby shower effect for you dog's puppy shower.

Plan the Location, the Invitations and the Food

Location

Before you can send out invites or even create a food menu for both humans and animals in your party, you may need to look for a suitable venue for your doggy bash. While the most convenient place for such an event may be your backyard, you may need to reconsider the hassle of having so many dogs and humans trampling through your house. Try to consider a park for a picnic-like setting. You can also try to find a venue that allows pets, if you are planning on an indoor affair.

Invitations

When you are thinking of who to invite for your dog's bash, you may want to consider the people who interact with your dog on a regular basis. You should consider inviting those friends of yours who are dog lovers as well and those who may have pets that your dog has interacted with in the past. You can also invite the dogs that your pet has played with on your walks or from some of the doggy establishments you visit. Try to make sure that you do not have too many dogs coming to your pup's party since this may result in chaos. Just have enough of your pet's pals around to really make it a pet event.

Once you know who you plan to invite for your dog's big day, you may then plan the menu and choose which kinds of food you may want to serve your guests and your pet's guests. You can also choose the invitations you want for the occasion and send them out as soon as you think it is possible to give people time to prepare for the coming event.

The Menu

When you are considering the food for the party, you might want to think in terms of two menus, one for your human guests and another for your pet's furry four legged friends. This menu should consist of easy to eat foods since the pet owners you invite will also have to tend to their little ones and having food that is complicated or hard to handle may just cramp the movements of your guests. The menu that your four legged guests will have should consist of the kind of food that they can easily nibble on. There are a few doggy bakeries that specialize in packages like this for such occasions and looking through their menus for what you might want for your doggy guests will indeed help you set things up without a hitch.

Of course, you may want to prepare individual place settings and doggy bowls for your dog's pals. Having an individual place setting for each canine will help each one get his or her own share of the goodies at the party and may also serve to help avoid chaotic scenarios when feeding time comes around.

Activities

What is a party without a few games? Try to organize a few games that involve both the pets and the owners. These activities may include fetch games, funny games or simple dog and owner games, like races where both owners and pets run to and from a set point in the venue. You can even try to come up with a fashion show contest where the owners dress up their dogs in their nicest togs and have the guests who do not have pets at the party judge who is the best costumed pooch in the venue.

Other activities may involve a simple trick contest. The pup that does the most doggy tricks may win a prize or the pup that performs the most unique trick wins a prize. Of course, you may have to prepare a prize that is suited to the winners and you may even include prizes for the owners too, if you want.

Do not forget to take pictures of the event so that you can look back at it and enjoy reliving the day anytime you want. You can place these photos in a special album with your pet's face on the front and the date of the party as well as the occasion.

All in all, planning a party for your dog need not be a hassle if you plan way ahead of time. Having all the things you need in place and doing what needs to be done before hand will indeed help your pet enjoy his or her party and will help you enjoy it too. <bio>Gerald Cormier is the owner of The Shih Tzu Store, a pet boutique specializing in small dogs.
People love their dogs. Dogs love their owners. More and more dog related places and things are showing up all over the place, and Tampa Bay is no stranger to the craze. Pet friendly hotels, restaurants, and stores are around every corner these days. Gone are the days that dogs lived in the back yard or the basement. Most pet owners choose their furniture and flooring around the needs of their dogs. Some even have custom designed beds and personalized food dishes for their dogs. Just about every city in the Tampa Bay area has a Dog Park these days and people want to live near them too. Dog owners are starting to take their dogs to the park as much as they take their children it seems.

Some of the more popular places for dog lovers in Tampa Bay are Dunedin and Davis Island. Dunedin has a Dog Beach, with a separate section where dogs can run free up and down the beach and swim in the gulf. Davis Island's Dog Park in Tampa is fenced on three sides with the fourth side opening up to the water with views of the sailboats in the marina. There are also many fenced and unfenced dog parks in the Tampa Bay area as well including Clearwater's Crest Lake Park, Tarpon Springs' Anderson Park and Crescent Lake Park in St. Petersburg to name a few.

Just when you think you have heard everything dog related, a new real estate twist emerges. Bay Park Condominiums just off Old Coachman Road in Clearwater announces the opening of new "dog friendly" condominium project. They have gated, well-lit dog runs for large and small dogs in each building, landscaped with pet friendly plants and accessories. There is also a concierge service which includes pet sitting, walking and feeding. This is not your ordinary run-of-the-mill condominium either. This is a gated, luxury condo complex with 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units, complete with granite countertops, rich wood cabinetry, and stainless steel appliances. Bay Park also has many amenities such as a heated resort style pool, tennis and volleyball courts, a gorgeous clubhouse, a 24 hour fitness center, and a putting green.

A day at the park is one thing but keeping your four legged friend in mind while shopping for a condominium is probably quite a good idea if you are a dog lover. After all, not everyone is. Why not indulge in something that will enhance your life as well as the life of your dog, while sharing this common trait with your neighbors?
When you're rod building, you need to choose the guide you add to your equipment carefully. One of the advantages of developing your own equipment is that you'll have full control over what elements you choose to add to your fishing rod so make sure you inform yourself about the options so you'll make the best decision possible and created a finished product that will make you very happy.

Let's start by looking at a couple of guides you might need, especially if you are interested in building a fly rod. We'll also look at the different type of material used for those guides.

Types of Guides

One of the types you might want to consider is stripping guides. If you go with this option, then you'll want to purchase a couple of them, especially if you the length of the finished rod you're building is going to be on the long side. You could choose either the two-legged or the three-legged styles depending on your personal preference. Remember that's the whole point of rod building: personal preference.

You could also choose running guides instead. If you choose this type of guide, it would be wise to go with a variation of the snake guide. These can minimize the chance of your line getting stuck to your blank which can make proper casting a real challenge. You won't have to worry about friction as much either but they do stand a better chance of breaking. For that reason, you may want to purchase extra running guides.

Tips tops are the third possibility. These come in a couple of styles as well, including wire frame loops and ceramic inserts. The ceramic inserts are slightly heavier which could be a disadvantage if you're worried about the weight of the product after your finished rod building. However, because these provide reduced friction the casting is much quieter. That reduced noise can be a huge advantage when you're fishing.

Guide Materials to Consider when Rod Building

Choosing the best guide for your rod building is only part of the issue. You'll also need to pay attention to the material you pick. The materials are used for plating and that's important because it is responsible for ensuring the longevity of the guide itself. In many cases, the plating you choose can also have other benefits, such as reduced friction.

You can choose hard chrome plating which is definitely one of the best choices for a variety of guide types when you're rod building. It provides increased protection over stainless steel but also helps keep friction to a minimum thus reducing noise and wear.

If you're interested in finding some type of material that will be able to withstand the harshness of salt water while you're fishing, consider titanium for your guide. It's also lighter to use than other types of material and much more expensive. However, if you want your rod building to produce the highest quality finished product it could be a good choice.<bio>Rod Building Sea Isle Tackle has been proudly serving the saltwater fishing community for over 45 years.
Every year, as winter approaches, the graceful, long-legged White Stork Ciconia ciconia of Europe makes its migratory journey to Africa. When it returns, Europeans welcome it as a joyful harbinger of spring. For centuries these beautiful birds have been looked upon as symbols of marital happiness and good fortune, but today there are only a few villages in northern Europe which still have storks nesting on the rooftops and chimney stacks of their houses; further south they are more common. The villagers often do what they can to encourage these visitations by setting out baskets and wheels for the birds to nest on. The fact that storks pair for life and make excellent parents has no doubt lent credence to the legends which have grown up around them.

With the first hint of spring, the male stork returns to the nest which he vacated the previous autumn. As soon as his partner joins him, the nest building begins. The male brings the building materials, mainly twigs, earth and grass, which the female carefully arranges into a large platform. Over the years these nests may grow to mammoth proportions, for the new home is nearly always built on the ruins of the old. After the chicks are born , both parents feed them and, when they are about two months' old, the fledglings leave the nest.

Although the famous White Stock is most often depicted on its rooftop nest, much of its time is spent on the marshlands searching for crabs, frogs and fishes which it devours in huge quantities.

Most member of the stork family, which is widely distributed throughout the warmer regions of the world, are attractive birds, This cannot be said of the unprepossessing Marabou, or Adjutant, Stork Leptoptilus crumeniferus. This large bird of tropical Africa and India feeds mostly on carrion and for this reason its presence is tolerated. It is quite useful to have and unpaid refuse collector on the Outskirts of your village! In fact, the Marabou has few enemies for its massive bill is no mean weapon and even the hungry vultures keep a respectful distance. The military title of 'Adjutant' derives from the pompous way these storks strut about. Famous for their spectacular dancing in the mating season, the elegant, long legged cranes are found in many parts of the world.

One of the most beautiful of all the cranes is the Crowned Crane Balearica pavonina of Africa with its magnificent golden crest of bristle-like feathers. With wings half-spread, it has been photographed in a typical dance pose. Both sexes take part in these elaborate courtship dances and, as the birds hop, skip and jump, they punctuate their movements with gracious little bows to each other. As a piece of additional showmanship, one of the dancing cranes will occasionally toss a stick into the air, catching it in its long slender bill as it falls.

Crowned Cranes feed mostly on insects, and as they move over the soft marshy ground they deliberately stamp their feet to disturb their prey.

Numerous legends and superstitious beliefs surround cranes, based on the fact that it is a long-lived bird. In Japanese mythology cranes are said to live a thousand years or more and so have become symbols of longevity and happiness. The Japanese name for crane is 'turu' and quite often a baby boy will be named Turuo and a girl Turuko. Japanese birds often wear ceremonial kimonos which are beautifully decorated with cranes.<bio>Please visit my blog Holiday deals The Holiday Holiday Packages</bio>

Fleas are pesky critters that can transmit a variety of diseases and illnesses and make life miserable for your pet as well. Getting rid of these pests is essential for a healthy, happy home for all of its two-legged and four-legged inhabitants. Here are seven easy ways to prevent and control the flea population around your house.

Prevention is Key The best method in the fight against fleas is preventing an infestation in the first place. Since they thrive in heat and humidity, be sure to check your pet frequently during the hotter months as well as in the fall or autumn. Another critical preventative measure is keeping your yard trimmed and free of weeds and to keep the foliage pruned as much as possible. It's also wise to wash the pet's bedding in very hot, soapy water on a weekly basis as this is the most likely site for flea eggs and larvae.

Keep an Eye on Your Pet It should go without saying that it's necessary to watch your pet for commons signs and symptoms of a flea infestation. Keep an eye out for excessive biting and scratching, particularly around the tail and lower back areas. Watch for raw patches of skin where your dog or cat may have been scratching at fleas for some time. Another bit of evidence is "flea debris," specks of dried blood that are black in color.

Ask for a Professional Consult with your pet's veterinarian for their thoughts on flea control. They can recommend a few treatment options for you to decide which would be best for your particular situation.

Flea Collars and Powders If you have caught the problem relatively early, it may be possible to eliminate fleas by simply using flea collars and powders. There are several brands and types to choose from, and many contain a special comb with fine teeth that is designed to remove fleas from fur.

Flea Baths It's helpful to bathe your pet frequently using a specially formulated soap or treatment. It's necessary to take into consideration the type of fur or coat your pet has when bathing. This is particularly true for dogs as some breeds have essential oils that shouldn't be washed away with soap and water more than once or twice a year. If bathing in a flea bath isn't an option for your pet, consult your vet for other alternatives.

Monthly Medication There are pills available for your pet to take on a monthly basis that will prevent fleas from reproducing, but they do not kill the ones that have already reached adulthood. There are also multi-purpose medications and products available that are designed to prevent fleas from reproducing as well as controlling heartworm, hookworms, whipworms and roundworms.

An Unconventional Method This simple home remedy is touted by many as a sure cure for a house infested with fleas. At nighttime, simply fill a few bowls of plain water and place them underneath a lit flashlight. It is said that the fleas will be attracted to the light, jump into the water and drown. <bio>Jean Morgan is a writer of articles concerning pet health and pet health matters.
My wife and I own two dogs. They are considered a part of the family and we try to include them in many of our activities. This means that we have accumulated a great deal of dog stuff through the years. It is amazing the amount of advertising there is that gets directed towards dog owners and pet owners in general. The marketers know that people love their pets and are willing to spend a great deal of money on them. It seems that each holiday season there is more and more dog stuff in the stores.

This past holiday season I could not believe my eyes when I was in the accessory section of a national department store. At first I thought there was a new section of doll clothing that was placed in this section. Upon closer examination I realized that the clothes were for dogs. Along with the clothes there were beds, toys, designer dishes and other dog stuff. This is a store that does not ordinarily have a pet section. I asked one of the sales clerks when this section of dog stuff had been added. She stated that it was part of their holiday campaign nation wide. It seems that people were requesting more items that they could purchase, not only for their dog, but for the dogs of their friends. I jokingly asked if this did not snub cat owners, but I was told that the cat merchandize was on the opposite side of the display I was looking at.

The dog stuff included very elaborate outfits for the holidays. Velvet dresses, satin off the shoulder cocktail dresses, and the more traditional knit sweaters. There were also collars that were studded with sequins and stones. I could tell that the sales clerk was not thrilled with this new merchandize. I commented that our female dog would certainly prefer precious stones. When I said this she lead me over to the fine jewelry counter and showed me a display of precious and semi precious collars. I could not believe what I was seeing.

I knew that there were specialty stores and catalogs that handled this kind of dog stuff, but I never thought that it would be featured in a national department store. The clerk mentioned that they had a large display of Halloween costumes in the fall along with special treats for the four legged trick or treater's.

I came home and told my wife about the display of dog stuff. She commented that we might be recipients of some of the items, because our family members and friends know that we pamper our dogs. I told her that if we did get something I hoped it would be the 14 carat gold collar with the pearl pendant. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles about dogs and puppies and how to train them. His main business is as an internet marketer. http://www.howtostartonlinehomebusiness.com http://www.basicsdogtraining.com </bio>

Dogs all over the world are treated as treasured family members. Since these fabulous four legged friends deserve to be treated in the best possible manner most dog owners are anxious to know what the best possible treats are for their dogs. Here are several great ideas of treats that you could be giving to your dogs that are sure to make them very happy.

There are many dog owners out there today that are extremely conscious about the health of their dog. It is for that very reason that many dogs owners have decided to start giving their dogs homemade dog treats. Homemade treats for dogs have become hugely popular over the last several years and can be located everywhere from the World Wide Web to your local coffee shop. Homemade dog treats can be anything from a simple biscuit to tasty treats that resemble things like doughnuts or even a slice of pie. Many dog owners prefer to make their own treats for their dogs, as then they know exactly what their dogs are consuming. There are tons of recipes for homemade dog treats that can be found by simply doing a search on the Internet. This can be a very fun hobby to start and your dog is sure to be a very willing taste tester.

Another great gift idea for those looking for more healthful treat options for their dogs is to give them treats that they can not eat. Items like tennis balls, a piece of rope that is knotted at both ends and of course the ever popular squeaky toy can all be great treats for your dog. These types of treats can really contribute to the overall health of your beloved pet. Non-edible treats will also generally last longer then treats that your dog is able to eat.

Of course the most popular type of treats for your dog are the ones that can be found at your local grocery store. Dog bones, dog biscuits and chewy treats flavored like things such as bacon can all be found at very reasonable prices.

Be sure to remember what you plan to accomplish with the treats that you are purchasing or making for your dog. Do you want to help them loose weight? Are you training the to be able to do a specific task or are you just looking for something to help spoil them rotten? Knowing that will help you be in a position to select the best possible dog treat for your dog. <bio>Gray Rollins is a featured writer for Dog Teachers.
As winter arrives in the northern parts of the world and we break out our down filled parkas, our fleece lined ski jackets, long-johns, hats and mittens - do we stop to think of our four legged friends and companions? Well, most of us don't, which is hard to imagine seeing as he's one of our best friends.

Most of the dogs that we keep have not been bred for a severely cold climate. They were bred for size, companionship, show and as working dogs. Only the Spitz-type dogs such as the Alaskan malamute and the Huskies were bred for cold climates. These are large dogs with heavy mass and thick coats that are able to retain and maintain their body heat.

Many of the larger short haired breeds such as the Bulldog, Boxer, Dalmatian and Great Dane appreciate a sweater in cold weather. However, most of the dogs we have as pets in our homes are from the medium to smaller dog breeds. These dogs, because of their smaller body mass and typically thinner coats, can get cold very quickly. Their extremities, being smaller, have a greater chance of being damaged by the cold than do the larger breeds. Small and toy dogs have an extremely hard time maintaining and retaining their body heat. At worst frigid air, snow or slush can cause your dog to get frost bite and at best it will certainly make her him not want to go outdoors for exercise, walks and toileting.

One of the best ways to protect your pet from the elements is to kit them out with specialty dog clothes designed to keep them warm. Like our own clothing, the materials used are designed for comfort and durability. Fleece, cotton and nylon are commonly used in the construction of doggie coats, capes, sweaters, shirts and boots. If you want keep your dog comfortable in cold weather you will need to purchase at the very least a coat or cape (to help retain body heat) and fleece lined nylon boots (to protect the feet from snow and cold). Almost any pet store will have dog apparel to suit most breeds. To find larger sized clothes (for breeds like the Greyhound) or specific brands and styles, you may have to search out an on-line store that carries these products.

If you live in the Snow Belt, do your dog a favor - get him some warm clothes to wear. He'll be happier for it and you'll have peace of mind that your dog is safe and comfortable. <bio>Mike Mathews is a contributing writer and editor for the popular dog breed site: http://www.dog-breed-facts.com .
At one point or another, we all have to deal with some type of stress. The important thing is to prevent it from taking over our daily life, and this can often be done by observing a few simple ways to keep emotions high and the blues at bay.

Pet your pet. For years, experts have agreed that pet owners may lead happier, healthier lives thanks to their four-legged friends. Gently stroking a cat or dog is believed to lower stress and increase happiness.

Take a hike. Studies have shown that walking at least 30 minutes each day may help to significantly ease stress. It doesn't matter whether you walk outdoors or indoors using a treadmill; the important thing is to get up, get moving and get rid of your stress.

Common scents. Many people relax to their favorite scented candles, but few know that certain scents have a calming effect that may actually reduce stress. Lavender, vanilla and other fragrances that you may find especially soothing may be just the ticket to a stress-free day.

Just breathe. There's an old saying that recommends taking a deep breath and counting to 10 to soothe anger. Well, the same is true with stress. Breathing in rhythm may improve positive emotions as it helps to promote activity in the area of the brain that's responsible for good thoughts. Positive thinking can lead to happiness, which is one sure way to stop stress.

Treat yourself. Whether you're feeling a little blue or just need a quick pick-me-up, take time to be good to yourself. Have a sip of your favorite beverage, indulge in a light snack to tempt your tastebuds or just take a break. When one errand runs into another and days seem to fly by so quickly that we barely even notice them, it may be time to get out of the rut and take a moment to enjoy life by treating yourself to something great.

The information contained in this article is designed for reference purposes only. A dominant dog will use this posture to indicate assertion of authority and a willingness to fight for it.

Body slightly sloped forward, feet braced: "I accept your challenge and am ready to fight!"

Dog rolls on side or exposes underside: "Let us not argue" or "I am not a threat to you" or "I accept that you are in charge here." This is a submissive response to avert conflict. Many dogs adopt this posture in a fairly relaxed and contented manner when they are around their pack leader. When your dog rolls on his back for a belly rub, he is actually accepting you as leader of the pack.

Dog places head on another dog's shoulder or places paw on the back of another dog: "I want you to know who is the boss around here." These gestures are commonly used by dominant dogs, pack leaders, and dogs that have aspirations of becoming a pack leader.

Mouthing: This shows up in dog-human interactions as the dog taking the handler's hand in his mouth or, while walking, taking the lead in the mouth. Mouthing can be a serious sign of dominance challenging and shows that the dog does not accept the human as pack leader.

Dog places paw on master's knee: "Look, I am here" or "Pay attention to me." This attention-seeking signal has many variations. They include pawing the air in front of their master or sliding the head under the master's hand.

Hair bristles on back and shoulders: This is a sign of anticipated aggression. A ridge of hair bristling down the back is a sign that says "Do not push me, I am angry!" It means "I am anxious, uneasy and concerned."

Dog rolls on his back and rubs it on the ground: This is sometimes preceded by nose rubbing where the dog pushes his face, and possibly his chest against the ground in a rubbing motion or rubs the face with a forepaw, from eyes to nose. However they also can occur following or in anticipation of other pleasant activities.

Scraping the ground and ripping the turf with the paws: This is usually after the dog has defecated but may occur at other times. Dogs have glands on the bottom of their feet that provide each with a unique scent.
