Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last week announced that the government would allow "sustainable" logging within 3% of the Amazon rain forest. The objective of the law is to reduce illegal logging while giving rural Brazilians employment. The plan is also aimed at generating revenue for forest management and protection.

Logging licenses will be restricted to private Brazilian companies, and by changing logging patterns, it is hoped that less damage will be done to the rain forest.

Current illegal logging practices, which account for most of the production, pay little heed to environmental regulations. A 2005 study found that "stealth logging" -- the selective logging of mature trees carried out under the protective canopy of the forest -- causes considerable damage to the forest.

In fact the study found that such selective logging is almost as harmful as if the forest was just cleared. Selectively logged areas are up to 8 times more likely to be settled and eventually cleared because of the access roads that are cut into the forest.

Logging itself is not thought to be the main cause of deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. That honor goes to agricultural expansion -- cattle ranching, soybean production and subsistence farming.

The Amazon area has lost more than 132,000 square kilometers of rainforest since the end of the 1990s.

The hope is that Brazilian firms will be able to operate profitably in the Amazon without damaging or diminishing the forest. Given the importance of the Amazon district to the ecology of the entire world, this is an experiment that all of us should hope will be successful.

**Brazil automakers sustained by exports

Although the Brazilian domestic market for new automobiles was down slightly in February, exports increased, keeping the overall level of vehicle production moving upwards. February production was up 3.3% over January and 3.9% over February of 2005.

Analysts had expected exports to decrease as the value of the Brazilian real strengthened. The real has gained almost 25% against the U.S. dollar since the beginning of 2005. But, in fact auto exports increased -- a sign that the Brazilian economy is stronger than expected.

Although domestic auto sales were down by 3.8% from January, this is an increase of 11.3% over February 2005.

Flex-fuel vehicles continued to be the biggest sellers, accounting for 93,000 or 76.6% of the total sales. Flex-fuel vehicles run on any combination of gasoline and ethanol.
Scientists at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology studying satellite date have found that only 1 to 2 percent of forest disturbance in the Peruvian Amazon occured in protected areas, which means that land-use and conservation policies have been successful. Protected areas are 18 times more effective at reducing deforestatio than unprotected areas.

Lead author Paulo Oliveira said, "We found that only 1 to 2 % of this disturbance in Peru happened in natural protected areas. However, there was substantial forest disturbance adjacent to areas set aside for legal logging operations. This leakage of human activity outside of logging concessions is a concern."

Peru's tropical forests are larger than France, which stretch 661,000 sq km and is second only to Brazil's forest area. The Peruvian government has been conscientiously putting aside large areas as parks and reserves while allocating around 40,000 sq miles of forest for long-term commercial timber production by 2005. With deforestation rates of less than 1%, Peru has comparatively lower rates when compared to its neighbors.

Scientists used the Carnegie Landsat Analysis System (CLAS), a "satellite-based forest-damage detection system" that penetrates the rainforest canopy to reveal the impact of logging. The CLAS system can uncover forest changes at a resolution of less than 100 by 100 ft.

GP Asner said, "Our approach has improved over the past eight years, but relies on a core set of methods that have consistently worked. We spent years developing them in Brazil, then went to Peru and completed this study in only a year. We are now operating over Borneo. Our approach is proving a good way to monitor rain forest disturbance and deforestation anywhere in the world."

Researchers found that Peru's forest disturbance and deforestation rates between 1999 to 2005 were only 0.2% a year, with an average of 244 sq miles and 249 miles a year. More than 85% of the damaged forests were in Madre de Dios and near Pucallpa. 75% of the damage was found within 20km of roads. Even within those limits, forests set aside by the government were more than 4 times better protected than areas not designated for conservation.

The authors said, "Overall, only 2% of the forest disturbances and 1% the deforestation detected in the entire study area occurred within the boundaries of natural protected areas. Furthermore, territories occupied by indigenous communities contained 11% and 9% of the total forest disturbance and deforestation, respectively. These results clearly show that these two forms of land-use allocation can provide effective protection against forest damage."

"The establishment of protected natural areas, the titling of native territories, and the sanctioning of selective logging activities, have combined with the Peruvian Amazon's traditional conservation allies--its remoteness and a complex hydrological network--to ensure a moderate level of success in the conservation of its forest ecosystems. Economic development of the forest sector, which employed 279,000 people nationally in 2001 (24), is essential for the well-being of human populations, but poorly monitored logging concessions, along with the challenges of uncontrolled road access, may hinder efforts to maintain ecological function and diversity in Peruvian rainforests in the future," the authors continued.

"Increased satellite monitoring of logging and other forest disturbances will thus be essential to conservation, management and resource policy development efforts in Peru and other rainforest nations," they concluded.

"This is another study from the Carnegie group showing the world how tropical forests can be systematically monitored amazingly quickly and at a reasonable cost." said Michael Wright of The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, which helped support the research. "I foresee that CLAS-like satellite analysis systems will become the standards routinely used by local conservation agencies to track rain forest disturbances and deforestation in the future."

The study was published in the on-line edition of Science Express this month.<bio>L.
The tropical trees on planet Earth have seen better days. Today, the world's second largest tropical rainforest is on death row. Is there a way to save this jeweled segment of this ecosystem? If this tropical tree dies off, a unique ecosystem will vanish, a place where trees have learned to pattern their reproduction techniques. Tropical trees in Indonesia pattern reproduction by coinciding with the recurring arrival of El Nino.

There are global implications likely to occur that go along with this horrendous event about to transpire. So, just how do tropical trees reproduce? More importantly, can they survive?

Tropical trees vary in terms of the timing, extend, and intensity of flowering and fruiting. Most tropical trees do not produce reliable fruit crops. The majority of trees rely on animals to help pollinate the flowers and spread out the seeds released to the forest floor. It is more likely than not that seeds will come into animal contact prior to germination. This unfortunately is a fatal meeting for the seed.

Mother Nature, specifically El Nino is another player in the reproductive cycle of tropical trees. Speaking of El Nino's relationship with tropical tree reproduction, there are climate conditions of the El Nino that activate immediate fruiting. This fruiting is essential for seed reproduction to continue in all varieties of tropical trees.

According to Lisa M. Curran, tropical ecologist at the University of Michigan, masting, the ability for trees to provide abundant seeds on the forest floor to feed animals in the ecosystem, offers canopy trees a key strength. In a normal six-week masting period, a tropical canopy tree can release over 180 pounds of seed. Due to the fact that an abundant amount of seed is produced simultaneously, there is enough to germinate and foster new growth on the forest floor.

Yet, there are other adverse human conditions reeking havoc on this tropical tree's ability to reproduce: Logging, for one. In 1998, despite a major fruiting event that transpired during the 1998 El Nino year, no new seedlings were found. Even though a park under study is off-limits to logging=97at least it's supposed to be off limits=97the forest continued to lose the ability to regenerate itself.

Seed predators, for example, are unable to find food beyond the perimeter of the park. So, they venture inside and eat up the tropical seeds awaiting germination. This is but one issue surrounding the near extinction of various tropical rainforest.

Steps must be taken to aid in the reproduction patterns of tropical trees. For one, government action must take place. Since deforestation through logging has been a key element in the lack of tropical reproduction, it's up to us to find government subsidies or financial incentives to help in promoting progressive harvesting of tropical trees. Secondly, although it sounds obvious, we must prevent clear-cutting and burning of trees for industrial plantations. Without human intervention, many tropical ecosystems will die off. <bio>Avid full time hobby bonsai grower.
Forestry is one of the key industries in Northern Ontario. Northern Ontario's forest areas play an important role in providing livelihood to forestry communities all over the region. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, about 90% of the forest area in Ontario is publicly owned. Since aboriginal times, Northern Ontario has been dependant on forests for its livelihood and so has its social, economic, and cultural development. The twentieth century saw the development of sawmills, paper and pulp, logging, and other such industries in Northern Ontario. Today, the forest product industry, tourism, fishing and hunting, lumbering, and transportation contribute to the livelihood of more than 90,000 people all across Northern Ontario.

The forests sector industries ensure that they indulge in effective forest management. Since the livelihood of the region depends on the forest areas, effective measures are taken to ensure that the natural resources are sustainable and able to provide for the entire forestry community. High standards in terms of environmental protection and reforestation are provided to the precious natural resources. Apart from communities in Northern Ontario that are dependant on the forestry industry for their bread and butter, there are also communities in Southern Ontario that exist on the basis of the forestry sector, making using of products such as timber, paper, lumber, and so on. Thus, the forestry industry and community in Northern Ontario is playing a significant role in the economy and standard of living of other regions in Ontario as well.

However, the forestry communities of Northern Ontario have their own share of problems too. Although Northern Ontario has been blessed with abundant natural resources, and even though these sources are being used to generate power, they have not managed to alleviate the costs of power itself. The astronomical pricing of power is causing a loss of jobs and affecting the livelihood of the forestry communities. The government must ensure that power is produced at a price so that its supply can be carried out at a reasonable cost. Lack of an organization or a committee to regulate the forestry industry produce and ensure that adequate reforestation takes place is also a big problem faced by the forestry community in northern Ontario.

The signing of the Ontario Forest Accord in 1999 has been a breakthrough in terms of advancement for the forestry community in Northern Ontario. An effort has thus been made by the government, the forestry communities, and the environmental community to understand each others problems and come up with effective solutions together. <bio>Explore the Greenstone region's rich heritage of fur, gold, and forestry at interpretive sites in various communities or experience a traditional Pow Wow and learn of the ancient ways of the First Nations people. http://www.greenstone.ca/ </bio>

After the increase in global awareness about the dwindling Brazilian rainforest in recent years, it seems worrying that there is once again concern over its destruction after official government data emerged recently stating that deforestation has risen by 64 percent in the last twelve months. This sudden increase in deforestation can be attributed to loggers and soy farmers pushing ever further into the Amazon jungle and the recent high commodity prices.

This week, Brazil's National Institute for Space Research said that around 3,145 square miles -- an area about half the size of Wales -- of forest were destroyed between August 2007 and August 2008. The satellite images were captured by a real-time monitoring system, known in Brazil as Deter. It comes as a shock -- and a terrible step backwards - that deforestation has picked up again after it seemed to be diminishing over the last three years.

The rainforest statistics have been highlighted by the Brazilian newspapers, sparking a debate over how best to preserve the Amazon rainforest and triggering environmental campaigners to attack the government, claiming that the battle to protect the rainforest is not being given sufficient recognition.

This information about the yearly rise in deforestation was released soon after an announcement of monthly figures assessing deforestation per month, which actually showed that it had decreased. Government figures show that between May and June this year deforestation fell by 25%. "This is not about luck, it is about work, work, work," said Brazil's environment minister, Carlos Minc who described the levels of forest destruction as "alarming".

Although the monthly decline in deforestation is of course positive, Environmentalists think that the annual statistics give a more accurate representation of the damage being done to the rainforest, and the environment cannot afford for them to be ignored. Minc is aware that the government still has to combat large problems such as illegal logging. "We can't celebrate because deforestation is still very large. We have to invest everything into sustainable development," Minc was quoted in an interview with the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.

Environmental campaigners are now accusing the government of backing out of its original promises to protect the Amazon rainforest, which has been constantly destroyed since the 1970s by a mixture of logging, cattle ranching and soy farming. Brazil is striving to expand its economy and develop the Amazon region; however the campaigners fear that this is at the expense of Brazil's natural resources.

"The president (Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) said there would be no steps backwards," the former environment minister Marina Silva said in an interview with the O Globo newspaper. "But suddenly there is a conjuncture of things that go against everything that was being done."

We can only hope that the Brazilian government hasn't just been making these claims to pacify environmentalists and that they really are willing to crack down extensively on the decimation of this rainforest before the destruction becomes uncontrollable and it is too late.<bio>Hannah Walker is a writer for www.ecoswitch.com</bio>

There are several reasons one might consider learning more about the Forest VA Real Estate Market and why a Real Estate Buyer or Real Estate Seller could benefit a great deal. Forest VA is a city that is very rich in United States History and Style and is one of the older cities in the state. This city is the rural outskirts of Lynchburg, which is loaded with city attractions and amenities. When you decide to make your move out here, you will find very quiet living with a rustic flair. There are many pretty, colonial style houses in this area and it's quiet so you won't have to worry about being bothered all the time. This city is close to Lynchburg, Madison Heights and Washington DC so there's plenty of things for your family to do on weekends or holidays.

The biggest region in Forest, VA. is Ivy Hill. Ivy Hill is built around the Ivy Hill Golf Course and displays Forest VA Homes carved and spread out in and around the circumjacent timberland. Property in this region run in the $400,000 - $500,000 range and provide spectacular views of the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains and a myriad of other simple ideas to occupy your time.

If you prefer houses that are a little less prodigious, the Forest, VA. Real Estate Market has a dwelling for you as well. There are a myriad of Forest Virginia Homes available in the $100,000 - $200,000 price range that are still very attractive and breathtaking. When you are belaboring purchasing houses in the Forest region, you have to keep in mind the cost of living in the region and its close distance to Washington, DC. As a reminder, you may pay a little more here for a dwelling than you would for a home that is located some place in the Midwest, for illustration purposes. But be assured, you do acquire what you pay for in Forest.

Although many of the surrounding cities of Forest, VA boast lots of city attractions, Forest itself is guilty of sporting some of their own. This city is the home to Poplar Forest, which was Thomas Jefferson's summer home. In fact this home is now on display and anyone can visit it during certain hours. His home is still to this day studied by Archaeologists. Also in this area is the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, which isn't too far. You can also visit the Peaks Of Otter located in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Point Of Honor in Lynchburg. If this isn't enough, there are 4 schools in Forest and just recently 2 new shopping centers have been built, which in and of itself is a testimony to this area.

As far as Forest Virginia Real Estate statistics are concerned, Forest was home to approximately 8,000 people in a 2000 census and the median income for a family in Forest was $67,000, which is much larger than the national average. The preponderance of the people in this region are in the 25-44 age price range and 62.9% of the houses in this area are comprised of married couples with families. What you will encounter in Forest Lynchburg is a gentle, rural, established, family-oriented region of hard-working folks who are more than willing to promptly socialize and greet you into the region and into their hearts.

All in all, if you are looking for a nice place to settle down and raise a family, consider the Forest, VA. Real Estate Market. It's a great place to do business for a Real Property Buyer or a Real Property Seller. Forest is already home to many young and middle-aged families who are just doing their best to live the American dream and raise the next generation of Virginians, so there's no reason why you cant make this beautiful city your next home as well.<bio>Allow Virginia Real Estate Guru Jeffrey D.
There are many hazards associated with growth among tropical trees. Tropical Trees are just as susceptible to disease as any other living organism. One graphic concern here, though, is that tropical trees, in case you haven't noticed, are an endangered species. So the study of common diseases that inflict many of these trees is a worthwhile endeavor. It's not just for the tree's sake, either. Historically speaking, countless vaccines and other homeopathic remedies were born in tropical rainforests. If rainforest trees die off due to common diseases, then our human existence, too, will suffer the consequences=97not to mention other human interferences such as logging and de-forestation that are killing trees.

Tropical trees and their rainforest habitat must fend off against a variety of diseases. There are some common diseases associated with the sickness of many tropical trees. Without going into detail on how to cure these tree ailments, a discussion on diseases among trees will help shed some light on a small portion of the tree population's struggle to survive, co-habitat with humanity.

Virus infections cover a group of diseases, tree-born illnesses that were discovered, decades ago, due to the use of electron microscopes. The microscopes helped to visualize the growth of biochemical and biophysical methods scientists and bio-diversity scholars.

For one, Marchitez disease, a disease found in the oil palm of coconut trees has led to the discovery of other plant pathogens.

Nematode, a pathogen, causes disease in many tropical tree crops, some of which are lethal.

The underworld-like fungal population living in tropical forest ecosystems also plays a role in disease. A genetic diversity stems from a large portion of fungal parasites. A close cousin to the fungal ground-dweller is known as telluric diseases. Telluric diseases grow on trees and cause infection, a slow wasting-away of tree development.

Telluric refers to rotting away. Here, the rotting away occurs due to a change in the tissue structure of many root systems. These tissues, known as the cortical and ligneous tissues, formed in the roots leading first to wilting and the eventual death of a tropical tree. Rigidoporus lignosus, another fungal parasite housed in the root system of a large number of forest trees, causes decay.

During the closing pages of the 19th century, bacterial diseases were uncovered in the world of tropical tree crops. One of the first bacteria discovered was what caused citrus-greening disease. Scientists believed its formation was attributed with the presence of phytoplasmas (MIO, mycoplasma-like organisms).

Notwithstanding the relevance associated with environmental factors in ecosystems, scientists realize that the pathogen, along with its variability and susceptibility to change, constitutes one of the key ingredients that intervene in host-parasite relationships.

In a large number of diseases, evolution plays a role in forming the symptoms which may, in effect, lead to the ultimate demise of trees, even to the extent of killing off wide areas of rainforests. To some extent, these diseases are simply a part of the ecosystem. Yet, with the development of logging, our trees face dire circumstances beyond the normal evolutionary tract of birth, growth, and death through disease. <bio>http://www.mishobonsai.com </bio>

The scenery is primitive and has understandably, been the setting for films such as the Tarzan films.

Apalachicola Barrier Islands

Apalachicola, an old town south west of the forest, is the state's oyster capital. The three marvellous Barrier Islands are across the bay.

One of these is St George Island - a 28 mile barrier island. It is still the least inhabited and is unspoilt, even though you can get there by road. Its miles of white sand beaches are uncrowded, great for swimming and catching a variety of fish. You can see many gracious wildlife like turtles.

Take a break from the beautiful seashore and visit one of the many restaurants serving fresh local seafood such as oysters of course.

Or go shopping on the Island for clothing, beach stuff, gifts and art.

Another of the Barrier Islands is Little St George Island. Perfect for those who like a measure of isolation. The island is about 75 miles from Tallahassee and is reached by bridge and causeway from US 98.

You can camp for free, but bring your own facilities. There is of course, the white sand beaches, bird watching (ospreys and eagles), wildlife (yes, and racoons) and last but definitely not least - fantaastic fishing.

The third of the Barrier Islands is the St Vincent Island. You can only get there by boat.

But is has many fresh water lakes and salt water swamps. It is a birdwatchers paradise. <bio>Tim Burton writes travel articles for the popular Orlando Villas Florida by Owner website at http://www.milkriver.co.uk and Worldwide Villas by Owner website at http://www.worldwidevillas.net Article may be reprinted but must include the all the author's bio </bio>

A deciduous tree is a type of tree that periodically shed their leaves. A forest that is composed of mainly deciduous trees will appear as if it is bare or naked during the cold, winter months. A deciduous tree usually grows in a well-watered, temperate area that has a warm, long growing season that alternates with a cold winter. The precipitation that a deciduous tree requires during the year is snow and rain. Snow is very important because snow creates moisture that stays in the soil well into the spring months.

A deciduous tree, woody vines or shrubs that are located in the middle latitudes or the topics will drop their leaves during a period of a drought. For a woody plant that is located in a temperate area the winter is the time when the deciduous tree will shed its leaves. If the winter is so severe that the ground freezes that the water is unable to be taken in by the roots of the tree then the tree will shed its leaves.

As the spring blooms all around the deciduous tree will re-grow their shade-casting leaves. The deciduous tree provides adequate shade to many plants that grow in full or partial shade. The spring time is when the deciduous tree experiences a long season of reproduction and growth. This is when deciduous trees will reproduce and create seedlings, from seeds fallen in fall, that can be seen sprouted along the forest floor. After this long season of reproduction the leaves of the deciduous tree will begin to change colors in preparation for winter.

Most temperate deciduous forests, that require a cold winter season, can be found in the Northern Hemisphere. Also, a deciduous forest can be found in three major tracts of the world. In Europe the deciduous tree is usually found in the British Isles and in France reaching as far as central and Eastern Europe. Deciduous forests have been spotted as far as the Ural Mountains.

In East Asia a deciduous forest is found in the far east of Russia, the Korea Peninsula, Northeast China and Japan. Most of the deciduous forests are found in North America and occupy the areas that are around the Great Lakes, the Atlantic Ocean and in the south near the Gulf of Mexico.

Even though these forests are vastly separated a deciduous forest, no matter where its location is, consists of the same group of plants. The plants and trees that can be found in a deciduous forest include elms, walnuts, maples, oaks, beeches, birches, chestnuts, ashes and hornbeams.

A deciduous forest is most beautiful during the spring, summer and fall months. During the winter months many people find a deciduous forest to look barren and empty. An evergreen tree usually provides the only color in a deciduous forest during the colder months. A deciduous forest is a real treat when the leaves are changing color. This is when the countryside will be dotted with reds, oranges and browns. The fall season is when a deciduous forest reaches new and beautiful heights.<bio>Owner of Mishobonsai.com , has been practicing bonsai for over 10 years.
Situated in Wake County, the town of Wake Forest serves as a suburb of Raleigh, which accommodates more than 20,000 people.
Has it ever occurred to you when you look back on your day or week with a feeling that you didn't accomplish as much as you wanted? Your time is your most precious asset, especially when establishing your career or business. Proper use of your time can help you do more and even earn more. An intelligent approach to increase your personal productivity is by time logging.

Time logging is a good way to better manage your time since you know how you are currently spending your time. When keeping a detailed time log, record the time each time you start or finish any activity all throughout the day. You can simply use a stopwatch to record the intervals for every activity, doing this during your working hours or the entire day. Then, sort the time into categories and determine how much time was being spent for each type of activity.

For instance, note how much time you eat, surf the Internet, read the newspaper, spend in the bathroom, etc. If you want to be more detailed, consider doing this step for a week. Depending on your activities and your consistency, you can be surprised at how many log entries you can make for a day. Moreover, you may even be surprised to find that you are only spending a small portion of your working time on what should be considered as actual work.

Studies show that an average office worker spends only about 1.5 hours of actual work in a day, with the rest of the time spent engaging in non-work tasks. In fact, s/he does not eve begin doing actual work until at 11am and starts to wind down at about 3pm.

Your time log should help you analyze your results and make changes, when necessary.

The next step is to measure your personal efficiency ratio. This can be computed by recording the time spent on "actual work" divided by the total time spent "at work." However, you should keep in mind that while it is important to get as much of the job done as possible, it would also be foolish to work longer than you should. You may want to consider cutting back on the total hours to boost efficiency.

If you try to discipline yourself by doing something that does not really motivate you, chances are that you are most likely to fail. Trying harder can, in fact, actually de-motivate and drive your efficiency ratio even lower. For instance, if your time log indicates a low efficiency ratio, try limiting your total working time per day and see the result.

This is because when the brain recognizes that working time is limited, it sends you a signal to get working. Usually, you will find a way to get the job done and be more efficient with time constraints compared to having the luxury of time. Then, you can gradually increase your total hours at work while keeping peak efficiency.

Time logging is a great way to ensure peak productivity without necessarily increasing your work hours. It only takes little effort and time to do it, but it can produce long term benefits. <bio>If you are interested in personal productivity, check this web-site to learn more about increase productivity. http://www.measureproductivity.com/ </bio>

Two non-profit organisations in the United States, alongside the private research Duke University in North Carolina, have spent the last three years monitoring the actions of gas and oil companies in the western Amazon, and have now completed a comprehensive map covering the area that shows the alarming extent to which the corporations have plans for commencing their destructive trade in their area.

The study identified 180 "blocks" that have been ear-marked for oil and gas exploration, an area that stretches 170 million acres, an area just smaller than that of oil rich Texas. Understandably, these findings have caused a huge amount of concern that the businesses are instigating a plan to begin operating in this delicate, bio-diverse portion of the world. The threat to wildlife and indigenous people is obvious, and the report found that many of the oil and gas blocks overlie areas of the greatest ecological wealth, meaning that any activity in the area would come at the cost of species that are already under threat, amphibians for example.

Environmentalists should be under no illusions as to the amount of pressure that businesses can exert on areas that have been in theory protected from their activities. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska is an example of an area that was recognised as being environmentally vulnerable, was defended through legislation and has still found itself under the avaricious eyes of the Bush administration and their oil drilling friends. When president calls for congress to authorize oil prospecting in a wildlife refuge, you realise that the measured, protective legislation put in place to guard environmentally valuable areas is all to easily brushed aside for the immediate plans of big business.

This study fond that the highest concentration of these 'blocks' were concentrated in the most pristine areas of the Amazon, and that even the world famous national parks contained within, such as Bolivia's Madidi National Park, were earmarked for exploration. Overall, the study found that there are a total of 64 'blocks' in the Peruvian Amazon, covering around 121 million acres or 72% of the total land. Peru, like many other developing, Amazonian countries, has been driving toward increasing its hydrocarbon exploration in its own borders, although it is not currently allowing such activities in its national parks.

The report focused on the impact that road building would have on these remote, potted havens of biodiversity. As well as destroying the rainforest beneath their path, roads make previously inaccessible areas easily accessible to human influence, including illegal loggers and poachers. Illegal logging is already a major problem in the vulnerable Amazon, where the sheer scale of the area makes effective policing very difficult. It is estimated that illegal logging accounts for around half of all logging globally, and would be devastating to a developing Amazonian country as it would cause a loss of biodiversity without bringing any of the economic benefits to the country as a whole due to the loss in tax revenue.

The report went on to highlight the huge impact that opening up these secluded areas of jungle would have to the indigenous people who currently inhabit the area. Many of these communities would be extremely vulnerable to disease brought in from the outside world, and there is a concern that traditional cultures and ways of life would be placed under threat through coming into contact with people from outside the forest.<bio>Matt Gammie is a writer for the green camparison website ecoswitch</bio>

Rainforest deforestation impacts the planet, local and global economies. We're going to focus on the local changes, and work from there, up the chain of events and causality. The typical cycle is that rain forest lands get clear cut and used for crop lands, then cattle grazing lands when the crops fail, then abandoned (or used for housing if conveniently located), when even grazing lands fail. This is part of a vicious cycle =96 most of the nutrients in a rain forest biome are tied in the living organisms, not the soil itself. When they're clear cut, and burned, most of the resulting land is poor for agricultural use, low in phosphorus and nitrates, with soil that will blow away when the first wind storm hits. Soil exhaustion and salinization from over irrigation makes things even worse. This is, in many ways, analogous to strip-mining the soil, much as one would strip mine for copper or iron ore.

In an active and thriving rain forest, minerals and nutrients cycle quickly. When the rain forest is chopped down, those nutrients aren't there any more. They're shipped off as building materials or simply burned to clear the land. When grasses are seeded for cattle ranching, the soil is already starting depleted, and gets more so quickly. Eventually, the grass gets overgrazed, winds and rains come down and wash the soil into estuaries, and the process cycles even faster.

Erosion from deforestation is an attendant problem. The cover provided by the rain forest canopy keeps the tropical sunlight from baking the moisture out of the soils, and the aspiration of the plants helps capture rain clouds and seed clouds for rain. After the forest has been cleared, rainfall drops considerably. The tropical rain forest is a perfect example of a system where the combination of elements creates a whole greater than the sum of the parts.

There are several programs in place to try to preserve rain forests; the problems come from the fact that, in terms of local economics, it's hard to convince a farmer that clearing more land to raise more crops and make more money is a losing proposition compared to leaving the rain forest in place as a refuge for vermin and predators. Trying to preserve islands of rainforest land hasn't worked; the minimum area for viable rainforest biomes is around one hundred square miles, and most of the island experiments have been a tenth of that or less. Now, larger non governmental organizations are trying to buy up large tracts of rainforest land to keep as nature preserves, or to use as a basis for ecological tourism as a revenue stream to offset land use taxes, and the economic incentives for clear cutting.

Some efforts are being put in place to teach local farmers to work with the rain forest ecosystem rather than competing with it, using clearings in the rain forest for garden plots, and attempting to harvest the bounty of the rainforest directly. These have met a great deal of resistance because of the difficulties in balancing immediate short term profit with long term sustainability. <bio>Learn about Preservation of Endangered Rainforest Birds and Plant Species at http://www.paradiseearthonline.com </bio>

The 469 mile long Blue Ridge Parkway is often said to be the most scenic drive in America. Beginning near Cherokee, NC, the parkway winds through the gorgeous Smokey Mountains and passes through the Pisgah National Forest, as well as the Shenandoah National Forest, before ending just before Virginia's Skyline Drive begins.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is milepost after milepost of beautiful mountain views, camping opportunities, and outdoor activities. Whether your planning a family day trip or a week long trekking adventure, you can pack your Coleman cooler and enjoy the perfect journey on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails along the parkway, many accessing larger trail networks including the Appalachian Trail, NC's Mountain to Sea Trail, and the Shining Rock Wilderness Trail. This three part guide covers the hiking trails along the Virginia section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. A guide to the NC hiking trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway can be found here.

MP 5.9 Mountain Farm Trail is an easy, quarter mile self-guiding walk through a reconstructed 19th century Appalachian mountain farm. During summer months, there are living demonstrations in the farmstead, reenacting life on the farm long ago.

MP 6.0 The Appalachian Trail is a 2000 mile long hiking trail stretching through the eastern mountains, from Georgia to Maine. Several sections of the trail can be accessed from the Blue Ridge Parkway. This 2 mile section is a strenuous hike to Humpback Mountain at 3650 feet above sea level.

MP 8.4 Catoctin Loop Trail is a moderate .3 mile trail with beautiful vistas. This short loop is a great way to stretch your legs if you're driving the parkway.

MP 8.8 Greenstone Trail is a short (.2 mile) self-guiding trail that loops through the shady hardwood forest and examines the amazing rock formations along the parkway. This trail is a moderate hike.

MP 17.6 The Priest is an easy tenth-mile stroll to an amazing view of the religiously named cluster of mountains looming in the distance.

MP 18.5 White Rock Falls Trail Connection is a moderate 2.9 mile hike to the White Rock Falls trail.

MP 20.0 White Rock Falls Trail is a moderate hike that follows ..9 miles alongside a tranquil stream and ends at a small waterfall.

MP 26.3 Big Spy Mountain Trail is a short (.1 mile) but moderate walk to the War Fields, a large meadow known for the numerous arrowheads found in the soil. At 3200 feet above sea level, this trail offers a terrific view of the sky, as well as the beautiful Shenandoah Valley below.

MP 34.4 Yankee Horse Trail is a moderate .2 mile trail that passes a reconstructed railroad exhibit once used for logging in the Virginia mountains and leads to a small waterfall known as Wigwam Falls.

MP 38.8 Boston Knob Trail is an easy tenth of a mile loop around the hill near the overlook. This is an ideal walk to stretch your legs after a picnic lunch at the available table. <bio>For more tips and information about Camping Gear , check out http:http://www.summitcampinggear.com </bio>

They call this an eco-experience. But a Karkloof Canopy Tour on the Midlands Meander in KwaZulu Natal is more than that. This is adventure. This is adrenalin. This is like your first time on a red or a black ski slope. You're thinking, "This is too fast. This is too dangerous. I'm gonna die".

So what's the skinny? Using state of the art climbing and safety equipment, they suspend you on a pulley attached to a steel cable 30 metres above the Karkloof indigenous forest floor. And then it's "Goodnight Vienna".

What and where is the Karkloof Forest? The Karkloof Forest is in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. It is pristine. And when you see the size of the trees, you'll know. They're old. It is also home to the Karkloof Blue butterfly, which inhabits a few hundred square metres of the forest. And it's found nowhere else in the world.

And Karkloof Canopy Tours? Well they're the psychopaths that make a living out of jumping your adrenalin level to the point where it's practically squirting out your ears.

Sure it's a big rush. But don't think these guys aren't serious about safety. The kit is "state of the art". The whole thing's been designed with the strictest civil engineering standards in mind. You begin with a safety briefing. Your harness and gear are checked and double-checked by the lead guide. And then you're off!

"Off" means you've managed to screw up your courage, closed your eyes, muttered a prayer, and leapt off the first of seven platforms -- high up in the trees. Catch your breath, calm your heart rate. You've got eight slides, the longest of which is 170 metres long as you whiz and zigzag, down the pristine indigenous Karkloof forest valley.

By the way, did I mention that they call this an "eco-experience"? You did notice the 20-metre waterfall you zoomed over, the river you screamed your way across, the beauty of the forest, the extremely rare bird-life, the Samago monkeys? You did notice these things, didn't you?

No?

Then you'd better go back and do it again tomorrow!

Karkloof Canopy Tours is a member of the Midlands Meander Association which regulates and markets the Midlands Meander -- the largest "arts and crafts ramble" in South Africa. It's not only "arts and crafts", as you've probably gathered. It's jam-packed with a variety of accommodation establishments and things to see and do. The symbol of Midlands Meander in KwaZulu Natal is the Karkloof Blue butterfly. Bear it in mind, the next time you're travelling to South Africa. <bio>Brian Kemp owns and runs http://www.hallscountryhouse.com a http://www.hallscountryhouse.com/Midlands-Meander.html establishment in the http://www.hallscountryhouse.com/drakensberg.html </bio>

The recent conference on global deforestation held in Sydney co hosted by the Australian Ministers for Environment and Foreign Affairs drew a crowd of ministers, officials from all over the world and international development agencies. Preservation of natural forests was proven to be of particular interest, especially when it is largely believed that deforestation contributes about 20% of greenhouse gas emissions.

The Australian Government committed $200million to a global initiative on forests and climate and will be joined by the US and other countries.

Malcolm Turnball, Australian Minister for the Environment was quick to point out that Australia's contribution will focus on "practical measures", such as the promotion of better forest management, plantation of new forests and the use of remote-sensing technology to monitor the progress of deforestation in Indonesia, the Philippines and Pacific nations.

However, the truth remains that sustainable forest management in natural forests in the tropics is very often simply not as rewarding economically as the combination of rapid logging and conversion of the land to other uses.

At the recent high-level meeting, Turnbull estimated that for Indonesia alone halving its current rate of forest loss could be worth $3 billion a year in retained carbon value.

But the bottom line is someone has to pay for the carbon emission prevented all of it for this to become a reality, and who could or would?

The Stern report, strongly encourages reductions to happen as soon as possible, before costs becomes prohibitive.

The answer is that high greenhouse gas emitting industries could, with the proper incentives to do so. One possible example is the Australian coal-fired energy sector.

Current projections of coal consumption for power in Australia suggests that by 2030 about 50% more coal than is presently being used will be consumed. However, should the consumption of coal follow the trend needed for it to play its proportional part in reducing Australia's level of greenhouse gas to 50 or 60% of current levels by 2050, then by 2030, to be on track, consumption would have to be down to about 75% of present levels.

If the coal industry was to begin buyin avoided deforestation credits from Indonesia, to offset the difference between its actual use of coal and the amount it would have to reduce to meet targets, it would need to buy about 60,000ha of avoided deforestation credit in the first year, and this would increase quickly to an impressive 1.4 million ha or so by 2030.

As the demand for offset carbon supplies grows, the price paid for that carbon may rise from $15 currently to $45 a tonne by 2030. Prices of electricity from coal would increase by about 3.8% in 2015, 8% in 2020 and 20% in 2030.

This increase in prices would be low compared to 40 - 100% price hikes for electricity that would be needed by nuclear power, one of Prime Minister John Howard's favoured options.

Under the catalyst of emission targets, lower emission alternatives for power, in the form of natural gas and geo-thermal options, wind, solar and other technologies, would gain greater market share, and the coal industry might eventually crack the clean coal problem.

The avoided deforestation option should be seen as an interim strategy, buying natural forests in Indonesia time in the medium term while allowing Australia to address its emission issues.

From Indonesia's point of view, reducing deforestation will by no means be a low-cost exercise.

For a country to be able to sell carbon from avoided deforestation, total levels of forest loss in the entire nation must come down. This would require a broad international undertaking to implement a viable global market for avoided deforestation, which probably means that a Kyoto-style international treaty will be required. Developed nations would also have to show their own commitment as potential buyers of the carbon credits. This would be in the form of serious measures that will require greenhouse gas emissions to begin falling in line with international target levels.<bio>L. S. Other activists followed suit.

A private screening was followed by an after-party with organic beer and finger food from all organic ingredients was served.

Tzeporah Berman, founder of the eco-group ForestEthics is one of 50 leaders and scientists who appears in the film. She chose to go the distance, wearing an eco-certified wood fibre called Tencel.

She said, "I kid you not. The top I am wearing is made from ecologically, responsibly harvested wood."

In a speech, she called for stiffer government action on carbon emissions, a halt to oil and gas subsidies and a new strategy with a goal of ending old-growth logging while protecting critical ecosystems.

DiCaprio, who was not at the screening, describes it as a movie not about doomsday, but about solutions.

The 11th Hour refers to the last moment when change is possible. The film makes notes of the issues facing the planet's life systems: global warming, deforestation, species extinction, and depletion of the ocean's habitats. The film also investigates how humanity impacts the earth's ecosystems and what can be done to change the decline.

The Canadian forest industry said the film draws attention to the importance of sustainable management of forests.

Andrew Casey, vice-president of communications for the Forest Products Association of Canada said, "Canada has a rate of zero, for the most part, in terms of deforestation. But there is significant deforestation in countries like Brazil and Indonesia that are emerging as strong forest products suppliers. Until you do something about global demand, that demand is going to have to be met by somewhere. And if you shut stuff down here, it's going to move to places where there is deforestation and that's a bigger worry in the context of climate change."

Berman addresses the state of the world's forests, insisting 70 countries no longer have enough intact forests to maintain biodiversity. In contrast, three countries - Canada, Russia and Brazil - have the most remaining intact forests where biodiversity can be protected.

Berman, who was at the film's Hollywood premiere earlier this month with DiCaprio promoted her drive to protect more forests in Canada with stars like Paris Hilton.

She said she welcomes the involvement of celebrities in her lifelong cause, adding, "I'd rather have my teenaged niece reading about Paris Hilton's concern for Canadian forests than reading about what she is wearing. Hollywood becoming interested in green issues is taking these issues to a whole new level."

"I don't think this has changed my role," she said of the film. "For over a decade I have done everything I can to raise awareness about the importance of Canada's forests and how quickly our old-growth forests are being logged.

"It has taken me to a lot of strange places, from blockades to the boardrooms of some of the largest corporations in the world and now to the red - I mean green - carpet."<bio>Lawrence Soriano [please visit Deforestation Watch.] Deforestation Watch was established to drive sustainability mainstream.
