Everyone wants to save money, and the good news is that purchasing medicine online is both easy and affordable. This is because online pharmacies have a much lower overhead expenses.. The US Pharmacopeia (USP) has joined forces with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) together with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) has established quality control standards for all medications dispensed by pharmacies throughout United States. Their intention is to prevent consumers from receiving poor quality and/or harmful medicines from online pharmacies.

US Pharmacopeia (USP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Association of Boards of Pharmacy offer these ten tips to consumers who are thinking of buying health products online:

1. Do not purchase from an illegal website. This means putting yourself at risk. The danger of you being able to purchase contaminated or counterfeit product is there, aside from the fact that you may also be given the wrong product, an incorrect dose or worse yet, you could not receive any product at all since most illegal web sites do not maintain longevity.

2. Purchasing an unsafe or inappropriate medication may put you at risk or cause serious health consequences.

3. Obtain prescriptions from your doctor before purchasing drugs online. Moreover, it is not a good idea to purchase a prescription drug online without seeing first your doctor even if you fill out a health-probing questionnaire. The questionnaire does not provide sufficient information that would enable a doctor to determine if that drug is safe for you to use, if another treatment is more appropriate, or if you have an underlying medical condition which could be negatively affected by the drug you are about to purchase.

4. Always try to consult a doctor before using any medication for the first time. This way you can thwart any negative side-effects that the medicine might cause you.

5. Avoid sites that offer to prescribe a prescription drug for the first time without a physical exam, sell a prescription drug without a prescription, or sell drugs that are not approved by Food and Drug Administration. Taking drugs without any physical check up can be harmful to your health and may even cause death.

6. Do not buy from a web site that does not have any access to a registered pharmacist that can answer questions.

7. Avoid sites that don't contain information about the owner of the site and do not provide a street address and phone number to contact should problems arise.

8. If possible, refrain from purchasing from foreign web sites because generally it is illegal to import drugs from these sites and the risks you are facing are much greater. You could actually be held personally liable for importing this drug.

9. Be very careful in dealing with sites that claim that they have found a new cure for a certain serious disorder and offer quick cure-alls for a wide range of ailments. Likewise, stay away from sites that include undocumented case histories claiming remarkable results.

10. Beware of sites that make use of impressive sounding medical terminology to disguise their lack of research or those that claim that the government, the medical profession, or research scientists have conspired to suppress a products in spite of the effectiveness of the product to cure serious diseases. And if you want to be sure that you are purchasing from a licensed online pharmacy you may check out the site with the VIPPS and see whether it is a licensed pharmacy with good standing. <bio>Hannah Roberts has an interest Shopping related topics.
When the phone started to ring and my email started to fill, I knew something must have happened again in the world of dog and cat food. As of this writing more foods have been recalled and a few more ingredients besides wheat gluten have been added to the list of "not to safe."

Evidence suggesting that a shipment of the ingredient "Rice Protein Concentrate" contained melamine has come to light. As reported by OregonLlive.com posted by The Associated Press and The Oregonian "Ingredients imported from China that went into recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their protein content, federal officials said today.

That's one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods. Melamine has been found by U.S. laboratories in both wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China."

Melamine, an ingredient in plastics and fertilizers could lead to kidney failure in animals.

Stephen Sundlof, chief veterinarian for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said melamine, which has turned up in more than 100 brands of cat and dog food, might have been used to falsely boost the apparent nutritional content of rice protein. Melamine can skew test results to make a product appear more protein-rich than it really is, Sundlof said.

You think when you are buying food that all pet food manufacturers have your pet's best interests in mind =85=85=85=85..right? =96 After all, who doesn't love your pets more? Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your pet. For example: by-products used (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), or as some of you heard the 4 D's, dead diseased, dying and disabled Chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) should not be in your pet's food. Look for grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat, should be avoided

If you switch to premium dog food, switch your pet's diet to premium treats, bones and supplements. Often times we over look what else we are giving them. Treats can contain the harmful and not so healthy ingredients as listed above.

Life's Abundance premium pet food for puppies and adult dogs, cats and kittens is made using only fresh, human-quality ingredients. It is a nutrient dense food with high quality meat proteins and NO by-products, corn, wheat, gluten or soy. NO artificial flavors, colors, sugars or chemical preservatives. <bio>Lori Matthews studies health, nutrition and wellness. She enjoys writing articles on health for both people and pets.
With weight loss and importance of diet gaining momentum in the modern world, it has initiated a revolution of new products that is focused on improving and maintaining a healthy metabolic rate. These products assert that the various ingredients help in increasing the metabolic rate which enables a person to burn more calories at a faster pace thereby bringing about weight loss.

One major issue about many of the weight loss merchandise is that they have never been tested by the Food and Drug Administration. As a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/proper+evaluation" rel="tag">proper evaluation has not been conducted, check the label of the product and it will not have the approval from the Food and Drug Administration. But, not having this evaluation does not automatically mean that the product will not help. There are several products prepared with certain herbs that will work efficiently in this regard. there is no method to authenticate the claims made by these products.

So, when you next go hunting for a weight loss medication by enhancing the metabolic rates, check the label of the product and it will not have the approval from the Food and Drug Administration. But, not having this evaluation does not automatically mean that the product will not help. There are several products prepared with certain herbs that will work efficiently in this regard.

One good method to check back is to look for product reviews and it authenticate the claims of weight loss through improved metabolic rates. Check for reviews on a general forum on weight loss and not on the company website. As a proper evaluation has not been conducted, there is no method to authenticate the claims made by these products. Look for people who have given bad reviews or have experienced some side effects from the product.

This is a good method to employ as people from the company may also be participating in posting reviews and only claim positive results from using the product. So, if you do not find anything negative then move over to the positive. This will ascertain that you will get a proper opinion only from actual users of the product.

Some such products that are available claim to increase your metabolic rate but what it actually does is boost you up by the help of its caffeine and some adrenaline constituents that it has. These products assert that the various ingredients help in increasing the metabolic rate which enables a person to burn more calories at a faster pace thereby bringing about weight loss. With this though initially you may feel a rush and a sense of improvement in the metabolic rate, it will actually end up making you feel very sluggish and tired once the effect wears off.

The best way to go to improve metabolism is to consume a healthy and nutritious diet and to develop a good exercise program. Such artificial and so-claimed magical products that is believed to improve metabolism and help in reducing weight is a strict no-no.<bio>Find out free tips on how to increase metabolic tate as well as resting metabolic rate when you visit http://www.extrametabolism.com, the portal dedicated to ways to increase metabolism</bio>

There are many government agencies that have some limited form of product recall responsibilities, such as the Coast Guard's responsibility for certain marine-product recalls like floatation devices, and the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) jurisdiction over recalls involving harm to the environment. However, the bulk of recalls in the United States goes through one of four government agencies: Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This article aims to inform consumers about which agency to contact when they have a complaint to make about a product, and how to go about contacting the agency.

Food Recalls

Both the FDA and USDA are responsible for foods, but each has its own jurisdictions. If you have a complaint to make about meat, poultry, dairy and egg products, the USDA should be informed right away. See the end of this article for contact information on all agencies. For all other food products (i.e. canned goods, fruit and veggies, processed foods, snacks, restaurant food, etcetera...) you should contact the FDA.

Pharmaceutical Drugs, Over-The-Counter Drugs and Health Supplements

The FDA is in charge or regulating these, although their ability to regulate health supplements and 'herbal remedies' is somewhat limited at present. It is very important that you contact the FDA in the event of an unexpected side effect from any drug or health supplement so they can investigate quickly in order to save others from similar - or worse - reactions.

Cars, Trucks, Vans, SUVs, ATVs and Motorcycles

Most things with an engine and four-wheels are covered by the NHTSA, although certain ATVs and motorbikes may also be covered by the CPSC. In general, if it is legal to drive it on the street you should contact the USDA. If it is a motorized toy or recreational vehicle, contact the CPSC.

Auto parts, Tires, Infant Car Seats and Vehicle Accessories

If it is directly related to the automobile, such as a part or tires, contact the NHTSA. Infant car seats and most non-essential automobile accessories are handled by the CPSC.

Toys, Electronics, Furniture, Clothes, Etcetera...

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has the most to worry about in terms of overall products. Just about everything you can think of that was not covered in one of the above paragraphs is handled by the CPSC.

How To Contact Each Agency

FDA - www.fda.gov
5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville MD 20857-0001
1-888-INFO-FDA (1-888-463-6332)

USDA - www.usda.gov
1400 Independence Ave., S.W.
Washington, DC 20250

CPSC - www.cpsc.gov
4330 East West Highway
Bethesda, MD 20814

NHTSA - www.nhtsa.gov
NHTSA Office of Defects Investigations/CRD
NVS-216
1200 New Jersey Ave SE
Washington, DC 20590

Learn More

History of the USDA
http://www.usrecallnews.com/2008/06/history-of-the-u-s-department-of-agriculture-usda.html

History of the FDA
http://www.usrecallnews.com/2008/06/history-of-the-food-and-drug-administration-fda.html

History of the CPSC
http://www.usrecallnews.com/2008/05/us-consumer-product-safety-commission-cpsc.html

History of the NHTSA
http://www.usrecallnews.com/2008/06/history-of-the-u-s-national-highway-traffic-safety-administration-nhtsa.html<bio>Everett Sizemore is an online copywriter with content interests in yoga, consumer safety and green living.</bio>

Some people have the misconception that phentermine is an illegal substance, and weight loss pills that contain phentermine are sold illicitly. This is wrong. Phentermine is merely a controlled substance in most countries in the world, including the United States. This means that the manufacture, delivery, dispensation, administration and use of phentermine must be regulated; thus, the need for a prescription prior to purchasing the drug. According to the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances held by the United Nations, phentermine is a Schedule IV substance.

Phentermine belongs to the drug class of amphetamines. Although the chemical structure of phentermine is similar to amphetamine, it is not a kind of amphetamine. However, because of its similarity, phentermine can produce a positive result for drug tests.

Phentermine as a treatment for obesity was initially approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the year 1959. At that time, the only available preparation of phentermine was the resin form. Further research and development resulted in the production of phentermine hydrochloride in the 1970s.

Phentermine was formerly manufactured as Fastin by King Pharmaceuticals for the company Smithkline Beecham. However, in December of the year 1998, the drug was taken off the market by SK-Beecham.

Other pharmaceutical companies continue to manufacture weight loss pills containing phentermine. Gate Pharmaceuticals produces Adipex-P, while Medeva Pharmaceuticals sells it as Ionamin. Phentermine is also available as a generic medication.

Aside from these, phentermine is also available in combination with other drugs. Fen-Phen, a cocktail of fenfluramine and phentermine, and Dexfen-Phen, a cocktail of dexfenfluramine and phentermine, were extremely effective as weight loss agents. However, in the year 1997, a report by the Mayo clinic revealed that more than 20 patients taking the cocktails developed valvular heart disease. Further researches revealed that around 30% of patients who were taking dexfenfluramine or fenfluramine alone also developed heart valve disease. The FDA promptly requested the manufacturers of these drugs to withdraw them from the market. Phentermine, on the other hand, remained in the market, as the drug was not noted to cause the aforementioned adverse effect.

A newer cocktail is known as Phen-Pro, a combination of phentermine and Prozac. The mixture results in a longer effect of phentermine. The cocktail has not been shown to cause the same side effects as Fen-Phen. However, at present, the use of the drug has still not been approved by the FDA. The use of Phen-Pro remains "off-label".

Technically, drugs containing phentermine can only be bought if you have a prescription from a physician. However, it is now possible to buy phentermine weight loss pills even without one. Although it is possible, to do so is illegal. Another act that is illegal is giving or selling one's phentermine pills to another individual. By doing any of these acts, one can be prosecuted under both the state and the federal laws.

Phentermine is not an illegal drug, but it requires adequate medical supervision. Consult your physician if you plan on using weight loss pills containing phentermine.<bio>To find out about all of the different kinds of weight loss pills and phentermine visit www.netnutri.com </bio>

Herb Medicine becomes more popular each day as the benefits of using herbs becomes available to the general public. The cost of mainstream healthcare skyrockets and consumers pay out huge sums of money to the established companies that provide the drugs. The information on herb medicine is sometimes discounted by the general consumers. The first thought a consumer might have when this information is reviewed might be of witch doctors and the sorcerers. This should not be the case since there is now much information available based on scientific research and results. Governmental agencies including the Food and Drug Administration now provide proper guidance on the use of herbs for medicinal purposes. The experts that offer the advice on the use of herbs as medicine are certified and industry recognized for their expertise.

The use of herbs as medicine is complementary or as alternative medicine. Most people who have experienced the benefits of herb medicine use these in addition to the available mainstream medical treatments. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration issued information on the use of green tea for medicinal use and the potential benefits of drinking green tea that helps reduce the risk of cancer. The study was based on scientific research and the report issued included the information from these studies. Other information on the use of herbs as medicine comes from private study groups who employ traditional, scientific research to provide the information to the public.

Consumers Should Study Results Carefully When Using Herbs as Medicine

Some advocates of the use of herbs as medicine do not use the scientific information available. And some herbs used as medicine do not have scientific information to substantiate the benefits it claims. Some of the herbs available for medicinal purposes have been used successfully by consumers and their enthusiasm and testimony about the benefits encourage others to use certain herbs. Without the scientific information on a particular medicinal herb, the benefits are dubious. Maybe these substances do work and maybe they do not. There is no way of validating the benefits without the proper research. At times, people experience benefits for other reasons not necessarily related to a certain herb treatment.

The companies that produce herbs as medicine have been successful just like their counterparts that produce mainstream drug products. Some of this success has been due to their advertising and enthusiastic consumers. There are certain herbal substances that are known to suppress the symptoms of the common cold and depression. The effects of these herbal substances are not always backed by scientific research. That does not mean that these are not effective herb remedies, but the research has not been conducted to prove the results it claims. Consumers should look carefully at all the information available on the medicines that they use to maintain a healthy life style. <bio>Tangopang is a herbalist and owner of http://www.naturalhealthherbalremedies.com. </bio>

I think by now most people have heard this expression. This is one of the first times a drug has the proper name. Alli is the first Food and Drug Administration approved over-the-counter diet pill. It is fitting that the first over-the-counter diet pill approved by the FDA can make you have out-of-control bowel movements. The FDA is full of it when they say they are the protectors of Americans health.

This drug marketed by GlaxoSmithKline is not new just a repackaged prescription diet pill named Xenical. Ali is a half-dose version of this drug that has been on the market from 1999. The peak sales were in 2000 partly because it did not produce much weight loss results. By making this available over-the-counter they do not need doctor complicity. This is a very good business move.

Surprised? You thought the pill was for your health and well being. What Alli does is reduces the amount of fat the body absorbs from food by 25%. You must reduce the amount of fat you eat because all the unabsorbed fat will leave your system though elimination. One of the side effects is it leaves suddenly, in other words you experience loss of bowel control. That is embarrassing, but the more serious side effects are not talked about.

Alli has some very serious drawbacks. Alli blocks the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins. There are essential fats they we do not consume enough of in America. It is dangerous to lower the amount of Omega 3'S and GLA in the diet when the supply is not adequate as it is. Alli blocks the absorption of vitamin D another nutrient the American public is probably short on.

The Consumer group Public Citizen wants a ban on prescription Xenical and Alli because of precancerous colon lesions seen in animals studies. The FDA recommends that all users take a multivitamin in the evening. They are really out there fighting for our welfare. Instead of revoking the approval of the drug Xenical because of its lackluster performance and its side effects, they now let a direct-to-consumer advertising campaign be run by GlaxoSmithKline.

An over-the-counter drug does not have as many controls to see that it is used properly. Remember it is the "drug" companies along with their partner the FDA that gave us fen-phen, and other risky weight loss protocols. The problem that is not being addressed is that the diet plan that comes with Alli is not a good one. It is again based on the notion that the only way to loss weight is on a low-fat diet. Again this is not a good basis for a healthy lifestyle.

Most of the low-fat advice is from people who think in terms of the American High processed food way of eating. The Alli manufacturer is basing there guidelines, on so called research, on a normal way of dieting. Nothing can be further from the truth. Whole foods are the nutrient dense foods the way nature intended. Any fat that is contained in a whole unprocessed food is intended for your consumption and health. Alli Oops is an Oops by any standard. <bio>Paula Martinez is a contributing editor to Clermont Rocks which is a marketing resource for small business in Clermont, Florida.
The FDA is not always thorough in their approval of drugs or herbs! They don't always make sure that pharmaceutical and herbal supplement companies perform thorough studies. They often let them rush to put their products on the market. Consequently this results in the banning of products later on. Such was the case with Ephedra.

Ephedra is a botanical that has many uses and purposes in the medicinal field. There are more uses for ephedra available today, however, science has not yet developed it into its full potential. Science, herbs and medication do go hand in hand when combined properly. To eliminate any of these would be a major mistake. To invest in further development is a wise thing to consider especially when the future of our health is at stake.

Any medicine, scientific drug, natural or man made or herb that causes a rapid heartbeat is a risky substance for the body. This is the primary reason the FDA placed a ban on Ephedra in the first place. Now that we have established some basics, let's take a further look at what the FDA did regarding Ephedra and why?

Lets look at Ephedra through the eyes of the Consumer Advisory Board and the US Food and Drug Administration, FDA. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises consumers to stop using any dietary supplements containing ephedra. In order to protect consumers, the FDA published a final ruling on April 12, 2004 that bans the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids. This was the active ingredient in Ephedra.

After careful review of evidence about the risks and benefits of Ephedra in supplements, the FDA did find that these particular supplements present an unreasonable risk of illness and or injury to the consumers. The information showed little evidence of Ephedra's effectiveness, except in short-term weightloss use. This evidence also confirmed that this substance raises blood pressure and stresses the heart. The increased risk of heart problems and the risk of strokes negates any benefits of short-term weightloss.

This information is correct and very much on target to help and prevent heart as well as nervous system conditions. So we can see how the FDA does intervene and take action against botanicals that can have harmful effects on the body when consumed, especially in high quantities.

Ephedra and its uses need to be reconsidered. What its purpose is. What it can safely be used for. And most importantly, what it should not be used for. These issues and more are currently being addressed with research.

Disclaimer - The information presented here should not be interpreted as or substituted for medical advice.
Diet Pills come in three different varieties - prescription, over the counter (OTC) and herbal supplements. The only way to purchase prescription diet pills is with a medical doctor's prescription. Prescription diet pills are tested and continually monitored by the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). You can purchase OTC diet pills at a drugstore, pharmacy, health food or vitamin store. OTC diet pills are still monitored by the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. To purchase herbal diet pills or dietary supplements at drugstores, supermarkets, vitamin and health food stores. The FDA considers herbal diet pills to be food products, which fall under the control of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition which is subject to different guidelines than the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

For prescription diet pills to come on the market extensive testing has to occur which takes years of research. For that reason they are often the most effective products you can buy when you want to lose weight. They are however also the most expensive, and require a prescription from a doctor to obtain. For this reason they were not meant to help you lose 10 to 20 pounds before your next social outing. Prescription diet pills are meant to be taken by people who are so obese it is causing major concerns for their overall health.

Prescription diet pills work by using one of two primary strategies. They either surprising your appetite or blocking your body's ability to absorb fat. Appetite suppressants do exactly what their name suggests they do, they stimulate your brain into thinking that your stomach is full. Specifically they target norepinephrine and serotonin which goes to the hypothalamus region in your brain, and creates the "full stomach" sensation. When you think your stomach is full you eat less you start to lose weight. A wide variety of commercial products from different manufacturers are designed to suppress your appetite.

Other Diet pills help you lose weight by blocking your ability absorb fat. The pills cause a reduction in the lipase enzyme. With less lipase your body has a limited amount of fat it can absorb. In recent months studies have shown other prescription medication used to treat depression or Alzheimer's disease shows similar traits to the prescription drugs.

While prescription drugs may be some of the most effective products on the market they should only be used under the right circumstances and only when prescribed by a doctor.

© Copyright ProDietPills.com, All Rights Reserved.
Tamoxifen is a medication in pill form that interferes with the activity of estrogen. Tamoxifen has been used for more than 20 years to treat patients with advanced breast cancer. It is used as adjuvant, or additional, therapy following primary treatment for early stage breast cancer. In women at high risk of developing breast cancer, tamoxifen reduces the chance of developing the disease. Tamoxifen continues to be studied for the prevention of breast cancer. It is also being studied in the treatment of several other types of cancer. It is important to note that tamoxifen is also used to treat men with breast cancer.

Tamoxifen Tablets Tamoxifen Citrate Tablets, a nonsterodial antiestrogen, are for oral administration and contain 15.2 mg of Tamoxifen Citrate (equivalent to 10 mg of tamoxifen). Tamoxifen blocks the female sex hormone oestrogen. The hormone influences the growth of cells related to female reproduction, such as those in the breast or the uterus. If there is too much oestrogen in the system, cell growth can accelerate to the point where tumours start to develop. Tamoxifen competes with the sex hormone for the same proteins - called receptors - found on the surface of cancer cells. When the drug locks onto the receptors it blocks the way for oestrogen - which would otherwise activate the cancer cell to divide and make the tumour grow.

FDA Regulations on Tamoxifen On October 29, 1998, the Food and Drug Administration approved Nolvadex (tamoxifen citrate) for reducing the incidence of breast cancer in women at high risk for developing the disease. This new indication for tamoxifen, which has been used as a breast cancer treatment for more than 20 years, resulted from a recent study of the drug, conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), in women who were judged to be at increased risk of breast cancer. The study showed that tamoxifen reduced the chance of getting breast cancer by 44 percent. The data also showed that tamoxifen treatment did not completely eliminate breast cancer risk, and that its longer term effects are not known. <bio>Tamoxifen has been proven to be the cure to Breast Cancer.
To be honest, most people don't know a lot about LASIK surgery, and to them a LASIK procedure is a LASIK procedure. These people don't even know there's a difference in lasers used, and therefore they don't have a preference for one over the other. And indeed, the skill and experience of the surgeon matters more in the success of the operation than the laser itself. However, for those who are interested, here is some information you need in comparing LASIK lasers. Most reviews of the differences between lasers comes from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some factors you need to consider s you're making your comparison:

1) Results are better than FDA comparisons. Remember that FDA trials take place during the early part of the life cycle of a laser. However, in most cases, the laser has been improved since then. Add to this the fact that the surgeon's experience with LASIK improves over time, and you'll see that the FDA comparisons and data are limited in what they can tell you.

2) Remember that you can't fairly compare FDA data from one research study with the data from another FDA research study. This is because a laser manufacturer will go to the agency with different study designs, and they usually have different criteria for enrolling test subjects. It's true that every study has to answer some basic questions about the product's effectiveness and safety, but still, the study results are never meant to be compared with the results in another study. To get an accurate comparison of two separate lasers, you'd need random clinical trials in which the circumstances are deliberately controlled in such a way as to give an accurate comparison.

3) Remember that no study covers every conceivable possibility. The fact that you have a condition that a particular laser's manufacturer does not expressly say will be covered doesn't mean the laser won't work. It also doesn't mean that a different laser will (or will not) perform better in your situation.

4) Keep in mind that after the Food and Drug Administration approves a laser, your surgeon has the freedom to use it in any manner that he or she feels is appropriate (provided it's not in a manner that the courts would rule to be malpractice). In fact, this holds true for any FDA approved device or drug. To use a product for something for which it was not originally designed is called "off-label," and this is a perfectly acceptable practice. Doctors frequently use a particular technology for a patient's condition that was not part of the FDA's clinical research. As an example, even though aspirin was not designed in the laboratory and then tested as a treatment for stroke, still doctor's regularly recommend it as an "off label' method of decreasing your chances of having a stroke. That doesn't mean a doctor can be reckless with the LASIK laser. It just means that he is given some latitude, with the patient's approval, of being creative with his treatment recommendations.<bio>Phillip Dye is the creator of Lasiksurgeryrx.com .
Bextra is once a popular drug for arthritis. But when the US FDA had ordered its pullout, it ceased to be the wonder drug that it used to. Bextra is considered as an NSAID drug. NSAID means non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. These drugs are commonly used by arthritis patients and those who experience severe pain in their muscles and joints. Pharmacia Corporation manufactured Bextra but it was chiefly distributed by Pfizer. Bextra's generic name is Valdecoxib. It works as a powerful painkiller and can provide an almost immediate relief to arthritis patients.

However, the pullout of Bextra from pharmacies is due to its side effects. It was found out that Bextra can cause skin reactions that can be fatal to patients who use it regularly. Because of this, the US Food and Drug Administration had publicly announced that the drug is not fit for use and issued its recall. Pfizer, the drug's distributor, heeded the call and pulled their product out for the safety of the buying public. When the recall is issued, patients on Bextra are strongly advised to stop their intake of the drug and consult with their physicians immediately. The physicians, in turn, would have to give them the next best alternative for the drug.

Pfizer continued to study Bextra and what went wrong about it. Currently, they are trying to improve the drug so that its beneficial uses will not be overshadowed by its side effects. Aside from life-threatening skin reactions, it was also discovered that Bextra can cause cardiovascular diseases as well.

Bextra was initially created to aid osteoarthritis patients. This condition is a type of arthritis that is described as the overuse of the joints. The joints suffer from normal wear and tear throughout one's lifespan. However, other factors such as obesity and extraneous activities can also increase your risks of osteoarthritis. Bextra had effectively eliminated the stomach upsets normally associated to NSAIDs. However, it had overseen the adverse skin reaction it produces, including major heart concerns. If not for these, Bextra is very effective not only for osteoarthritis patients but for those who are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and menstrual pains as well.

This development about the Bextra drug had caused a big impact on the public. As a result, they became even more concerned and confused as to which drug to trust. Even doctors were alarmed about it. Patients who are on constant medication became wary of their drug, even if it doesn't have any direct relation to Bextra or NSAIDs. This occurrence had placed the spotlight on alternative medicines, which claim to be all-natural and causes absolutely no side effects. However, there are also a group of patients who choose not to take medicines at all but simply withstand the pain of their condition.

Whether or not Bextra had affected the confidence of patients with their drugs, the problem with side effects still remains. It is impossible to assess the effectiveness of certain drugs on your health problem without taking it first.
Smokers have many incentives to quit smoking. The health risk of smoking is bigger today then at any other point in history. It seems that with each passing year more is known about cigarettes and the health problems that stem from them. The problem is not a lack of motivation or incentive on the smoker's part, but it is quite simply a hard addiction. There have been many stop-smoking aids that have been released in the last 15 years. Some of these include the Nicorette gum and the famous stop-smoking Patch. Recently however, there has been a new stop-smoking aid that has entered the market. Varenicline, sold under the name Chantix, has many people hopeful for a stop-smoking method that actually works.

Chantix was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is the first stop-smoking aid to be approved by the FDA in almost 10 years. This has many people excited about the possibility that it may actually work. Although there have been some very positive test results shown with Chantix, it is still currently in the testing phase, and not available to the mass market. More will be known on the effects of Chantix once it is released.

In a nutshell, Chantix works by attaching itself to nicotine receptors in the brain, which is supposed to help prevent cravings. It does not actually contain any nicotine, instead containing Cytisine, which is commonly referred to as "False Tobacco". This differs from most stop-smoking aids which contain certain amounts of nicotine.

It is difficult to tell at this point whether or not Chantix will become the be-all and end-all of the stop-smoking aid world. Until more is known and more studies have been done, people should use caution before hailing Chantix as a miracle drug. Only you and your doctor can dtermine if you should try this drug. <bio>Get more info on Varenicline and a variety of subjects at http://www.schmeg.com/ </bio>

One of the hardest but most redemptive seasons of my life happened when I spent fourteen months in a drug rehabilitation center. In all my years of writing, I have never written about this experience that has so distinctly shaped my life.

Of course, I never would have dreamed that over a year of my life during my mid-twenties would be spent in drug rehabilitation, but it happened. I began doing drugs in junior high school, mostly I guess do to the typical amount of peer pressure that most teens get from their friends. I started using drugs with great hesitation, but party after party I got a little less afraid of using drugs and that became my biggest problem. Losing my fear of doing drugs was the single worst thing that happened to me in my struggle with drug use.

My drug use became a more serious problem throughout high school and into my years at university. I thought that I was doing a great job of hiding my problem until Christmas break happened one year and my parents saw all the signs. I had great parents, by the way, and I believe that they were in no way responsible for my drug use or for my eventual need for drug rehabilitation.

My drug problem got so bad shortly after that Christmas break that I ended up agreeing to go to drug rehabilitation without any fight. Most drug users, I am told, put up a fight for a while when someone first suggests that they enter drug rehabilitation. But not me. I knew how badly I needed help and I knew that if left alone I would probably allow drugs to kill me.

My fourteen months in the drug rehabilitation center taught me more about myself and about life than I ever expected them to. I learned about my value as a human being and as a man for the first time in that center. I learned in drug rehabilitation that drugs are a substitute for a hole that is empty in my life, just as food or exercise or alcohol or any other thing can be for people. I learned that I had a huge responsibility in taking care of my life and my health.

It has been healing for me as I have begun talking about my experience with drug rehabilitation with honesty. I have never felt more free than when I am looking back on the mistakes of my past with honestly and then when I am looking forward to my future with hope. <bio>Triston Huntsmin is now a drug and alcohol counselor for those in need of drug rehabilitation or alcohol rehabilitation.
Phentermine is a drug used for short-term weight loss in patients who are obese. It is a regulated drug, and typically requires a prescription from a physician when purchasing. If you're interested in taking Phentermine, it is first important to know some basic information about the drug.

Phentermine is classified under the drug class of amphetamines. The name phentermine is a shortened form of phenyl-tertiary-butylamine. Chemically, phentermine is actually 2-methyl-1-phenylpropan-2-amine and 2-methyl-amphetamine. Phentermine is also known by a number of brand names, such as Adipex, Fastin, Ionamin and Pro-Fast. There is likewise a generic form of amphetamine that is available in the market.

Phentermine is used in the treatment of obesity, especially for those individuals who are at risk for developing heart disease in the future. Best results are achieved when the drug is combined with both regular exercise and the proper diet. The drug is completely absorbed in the body by around 4 to 6 hours, and has peak levels in the blood 1 to 4 hours after drug intake. This drug should not be used in combination with other drugs for weight loss.

Phentermine works by suppressing one's appetite. It stimulates the brain to release special chemicals known as catecholamines. These catecholamines produce a stress response in the body that stops the hunger signal from reaching the brain. These chemicals are thus responsible for the loss of appetite associated with the intake of the drug.

In the late 1950s, phentermine was approved as an appetite suppressant by the Food and Drug Administration or FDA. The resin form of the drug became commercially available soon afterward. Phentermine hydrochloride, the active ingredient used in phentermine preparations nowadays, was developed and eventually became available in the market in the early 1970s.

In general, phentermine is a well-tolerated drug, with relatively mild side effects. These include a high blood pressure, a fast heart rate, palpitations, nervousness and headache. A common side effect of the drug is insomnia; thus, the drug should not be taken at bedtime. If used longer than prescribed, it can result in addiction or dependency. However, when used properly, phentermine produces rapid weight loss with few, if any, adverse reactions.

Phentermine has become the focus of numerous controversies. Specifically, the combination of phentermine with fenfluramine, also known as Fen-Phen, was associated with the development of disease of the heart valves. Research revealed that this side effect can be attributed to the fenfluramine component, and not phentermine per se; thus, phentermine by itself remains available in the market. However, because of the risk of addiction that may develop in individuals taking the drug, phentermine is considered as a controlled substance in various countries all over the world. At present, phentermine is classified as a Schedule IV drug based on the international Convention on Psychotropic Substances.

Phentermine can have serious effects on people with certain medical conditions, and may interact with a number of medications. Thus, it is best to consult your physician prior to taking phentermine or any other weight loss agent.<bio>To find out about all of the different kinds of weight loss pills and phentermine visit www.netnutri.com</bio>

Just a moment before you pick up that low-carb salad dressing from the grocery store shelf. Low cal, low carb, reduced fat, reduced carbs, and other so called healthy promotional phrases may all take on a entirely new meaning in the not too distant future.

FDA Deputy Commissioner Lester Crawford has indicated a food content labeling mandate will probably cause a substantial number of products to have their labels changed. Crawford indicated it will be an effort to "demystify the current confusion about carbohydrates."

Many food makers have jumped on the "low-carb" band wagon. Companies hawk everything from traditional creamy and/or vinaigrette salad dressings, to low-carbohydrate Easter chocolate, as formulated and manufactured reduced in calories and carbs.

The FDA is concerned how food producing companies count carbohydrates, as it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some do indeed significantly cut carbohydrates. Others promote their products as reduced-carb, but only cut a single gram per serving. Surprisingly, these are priced to cost more too. Then there are some companies that leave ingredients out of their carb-count altogether. In some instances these practices actually yield good results. Take for example some breads: carbohydrates are cut by increasing fiber content, this is a change many low-carb critics embrace because most Americans don't consume enough fiber.

As early as this summer, the FDA plans to determine precisely how many carbohydrates are allowed for a food product to be promoted or advertised as low-carb or reduced-carb.

It is expected the Food and Drug Administration will also tell the food manufacturers how they should count the grams as well.

The mystery, what exactly is 'low-carb'?

Until FDA defines the terms, "reduced carb" or "low carb" these promotional descriptions will not be allowed on food labels. In fact the FDA has ordered some companies to quit using them. Pure De-Lite stopped labeling its dark chocolate bar "low-carb." The manufacturer of Nature's Own Wheat 'n Fiber bread decided to change its name from the original "reduced carbohydrate" just before receiving FDA's directive last year.

One trade group, the Grocery Manufacturers of America, represents most major brands. They have petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to define "low-carb" as 9 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams of food, determined as a typical serving.

GMA nutrition director Alison Kretser, is not endorsing any particular weight-loss plan, but believes putting carbs on a level playing field with fat and other food ingredients is fair and prudent.

CSPI is a consumer advocacy group who wants low-carb defined as 6 grams per serving, and for "reduced carb" foods to have at least twenty-five percent less carbohydrates than original product versions.

You would think we could "all just get along" by eating green salads and using home made vinaigrette recipe dressings wouldn't you? <bio>James Zeller writes for gourmet gift related websites and blogs.
There are many people who dream of becoming DEA Agents. Who can blame them? This is an exciting and rewarding career. The fight to keep drugs off American streets is a fight many people will be glad to join.

But the dream of becoming a DEA agent can quickly die if the proper care and preparation are not taken. To help with this preparation of becoming a DEA agent, this article will discuss the 3 important things people aspiring to this noble profession must know before applying for the job.

In no particular order, they are:

1.If you are preparing to become a DEA agent, it is important that you attend the US Drug Enforcement Administration Orientation Session. This session can be attended at your local DEA field office. There, you will get a dose of what the job involves.

Sometimes people want to be something until they find out what is involved. Then, they change their mind. This orientation session will help you decide if you really want to be an agent.

In the event there is no DEA Field Office near you, you can conduct phone screening and orientation by calling the national DEA office. This way you don't waste money traveling long distance only to be disappointed.

2.You must pass the DEA Physical Task Test. The job requires people that are physically fit. The Drug Enforcement Administration makes sure you are up to the task before they hire you.

This part of the job is really up to you. If you really want the job, you will need to start getting yourself in shape. You can start small by walking and working your way up to running and lifting weight as you get fitter.

3.You should have a college degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Law Enforcement. While other degrees like Accounting and Engineering qualify, there is nothing like getting a degree in a major that teaches you the basics of what you will be doing on the job.

Granted the Drug Enforcement Administration has extensive training to prepare you for the job, a degree in criminal justice, police science, or law enforcement will give you a leg up on the competition.

I have highlighted the 3 important things I believe can be your obstacle to becoming a DEA agent. There are other requirements, which I think are less important than those listed here. Covering every little requirement is beyond what I can cover in a short article like this. I wish you luck in your journey to becoming a DEA agent.

Note: You are free to reprint or republish this article.
The drug called Ecstasy/MDMA is just one of several that children as young as 8th graders are abusing. Ecstasy is a human-made drug taken orally as a capsule or tablet. The short-term effects include feelings of mental stimulation, emotional warmth, enhanced sensory perception, and increased physical energy. Adverse health effects can include nausea, chills, sweating, teeth clenching, muscle cramping, and blurred vision.

If you suspect or find out your child is actually abusing this drug or is involved in any kind of drug abuse what steps can you take to help them overcome the addictions?

A family-based prevention program should include:

1. Enhanced family bonding and relationships; 2.
