5. Evidence suggesting that a shipment of the ingredient "Rice Protein Concentrate" contained melamine has come to light. As reported by OregonLlive.com posted by The Associated Press and The Oregonian "Ingredients imported from China that went into recalled pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to boost their protein content, federal officials said today.

That's one theory being pursued by the Food and Drug Administration as it investigates how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used to make more than 100 brands of dog and cat foods. Melamine has been found by U.S. laboratories in both wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China."

Melamine, an ingredient in plastics and fertilizers could lead to kidney failure in animals.



Stephen Sundlof, chief veterinarian for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said melamine, which has turned up in more than 100 brands of cat and dog food, might have been used to falsely boost the apparent nutritional content of rice protein. Melamine can skew test results to make a product appear more protein-rich than it really is, Sundlof said.

Aside from these, phentermine is also available in combination with other drugs. Fen-Phen, a cocktail of fenfluramine and phentermine, and Dexfen-Phen, a cocktail of dexfenfluramine and phentermine, were extremely effective as weight loss agents. However, in the year 1997, a report by the Mayo clinic revealed that more than 20 patients taking the cocktails developed valvular heart disease. Further researches revealed that around 30% of patients who were taking dexfenfluramine or fenfluramine alone also developed heart valve disease. The FDA promptly requested the manufacturers of these drugs to withdraw them from the market. Phentermine, on the other hand, remained in the market, as the drug was not noted to cause the aforementioned adverse effect.

A newer cocktail is known as Phen-Pro, a combination of phentermine and Prozac. The mixture results in a longer effect of phentermine. The cocktail has not been shown to cause the same side effects as Fen-Phen. However, at present, the use of the drug has still not been approved by the FDA. The use of Phen-Pro remains "off-label".

Technically, drugs containing phentermine can only be bought if you have a prescription from a physician. However, it is now possible to buy phentermine weight loss pills even without one. FDA Deputy Commissioner Lester Crawford has indicated a food content labeling mandate will probably cause a substantial number of products to have their labels changed. Crawford indicated it will be an effort to "demystify the current confusion about carbohydrates."

Many food makers have jumped on the "low-carb" band wagon. Companies hawk everything from traditional creamy and/or vinaigrette salad dressings, to low-carbohydrate Easter chocolate, as formulated and manufactured reduced in calories and carbs.

The FDA is concerned how food producing companies count carbohydrates, as it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some do indeed significantly cut carbohydrates. Others promote their products as reduced-carb, but only cut a single gram per serving. Surprisingly, these are priced to cost more too. Then there are some companies that leave ingredients out of their carb-count altogether. In some instances these practices actually yield good results. Take for example some breads: carbohydrates are cut by increasing fiber content, this is a change many low-carb critics embrace because most Americans don't consume enough fiber.

As early as this summer, the FDA plans to determine precisely how many carbohydrates are allowed for a food product to be promoted or advertised as low-carb or reduced-carb.

It is expected the Food and Drug Administration will also tell the food manufacturers how they should count the grams as well.

The mystery, what exactly is 'low-carb'?

Until FDA defines the terms, "reduced carb" or "low carb" these promotional descriptions will not be allowed on food labels. In fact the FDA has ordered some companies to quit using them. Pure De-Lite stopped labeling its dark chocolate bar "low-carb." The manufacturer of Nature's Own Wheat 'n Fiber bread decided to change its name from the original "reduced carbohydrate" just before receiving FDA's directive last year.

One trade group, the Grocery Manufacturers of America, represents most major brands. They have petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to define "low-carb" as 9 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams of food, determined as a typical serving.

GMA nutrition director Alison Kretser, is not endorsing any particular weight-loss plan, but believes putting carbs on a level playing field with fat and other food ingredients is fair and prudent.

CSPI is a consumer advocacy group who wants low-carb defined as 6 grams per serving, and for "reduced carb" foods to have at least twenty-five percent less carbohydrates than original product versions.

In the event there is no DEA Field Office near you, you can conduct phone screening and orientation by calling the national DEA office. This way you don't waste money traveling long distance only to be disappointed.

2.You must pass the DEA Physical Task Test. The job requires people that are physically fit. The Drug Enforcement Administration makes sure you are up to the task before they hire you.

This part of the job is really up to you. If you really want the job, you will need to start getting yourself in shape. You can start small by walking and working your way up to running and lifting weight as you get fitter.

3.You should have a college degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Law Enforcement. While other degrees like Accounting and Engineering qualify, there is nothing like getting a degree in a major that teaches you the basics of what you will be doing on the job.

Granted the Drug Enforcement Administration has extensive training to prepare you for the job, a degree in criminal justice, police science, or law enforcement will give you a leg up on the competition.

The requirements to obtain a coveted position with the DEA are as follows. You need to be a United States citizen, you will need to be over 21 years of age but not older than 37. There will be a medical exam that includes a physical; if you have a hearing aide, it will disqualify you from the test.

There will also be a psychological and in-depth interview session. Your past drug use will need to be explained. This is not grounds for dismissal but very important because you will be given a polygraph test. You will have to take a drug test and a background investigation will need to be passed in order to gain employment with the DEA.

These tests may take up to 12 months to complete. If you pass all the required tests you will be trained for 16-weeks at the DEA training academy in Quantico, Virginia.

There you have! The only thing to add is that you start early in the application process. Give yourself at least 12 months from the date you apply to the date you will start work.

I must also add that you do more research on the DEA agent career. You need to visit websites that cover the profession in more detail. Do not let your competition be more informed and prepared than you.
