Many people suffer from the problem of flatulence, which is the act of expelling intestinal gas from the rectum. There are only two sources of gas in the gastrointestinal tract, swallowed air that enters the stomach, mostly gulped while eating or drinking, and the gas produced by bacteria present in the intestines, primarily the colon. The air that we swallow is rarely the cause of excessive flatulence. It mainly occurs due to the over-production of gas by the intestinal bacteria present in the large intestine or colon. Sometimes, flatulence is associated with some specific conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. People who suffer from irritable bowel flatulence may also experience other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and abnormal bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation.

In the digestion process, the food that is not digested in the small intestine, primarily sugars and polysaccharides (e.g. starch, cellulose), is digested by the bacteria present in the large intestine. In this process, bacteria produce different gases such as hydrogen, methane, etc. Lactose, sorbitol and fructose are the main sugars that are poorly digested.

The amount of gas produced by the bacteria varies from person to person. Some people have more bacteria in their colon, which results in more production of gas. Some people have particular bacteria that produce more gas. In some people, digestion of food in the small intestines is not complete, which can also effect the levels of gas produced.

Continue reading to discover natural methods to relieve Irritable Bowel symptoms and sign up for our free newsletter.

Conditions such as lactose intolerance, and celiac disease may also result in poor digestion. Since more undigested food reaches to the bacteria in the colon, it results in more gas. Some people suffer the spreading of gas-producing bacteria from large intestine into the small intestine. Therefore, the food reaches the bacteria before its complete digestion or absorption by the small intestine, and this increased volume of undigested foods which is available to the bacteria produces more gas also.

Excessive flatulence can also be associated with eating of particular type of food. For example, eating beans can lead to excessive flatulence.

The unused gas distends the intestine. The intestinal muscles contract and push the gas further along the intestine until the gas is finally expelled. People who have constipation as the main symptom in irritable bowel syndrome experience more flatulence and generally pass more gas than those who don't.

For those with a hypersensitive intestinal tract, like those with IBS, the build up of gas can trigger other IBS symptoms.

There are a number of options available to a person with excessive flatulence, which include the identification of the foods that seem to cause the problems, and reducing the volume eaten of these foods. They can often be reintroduced slowly at a later stage.

While evaluating the problem of excessive flatulence in a person, the physician may ask the patient to count the number of times he/she passes gas for several days.

It helps in confirming the presence of excessive flatulence since the count correlates well with the total amount (volume) of gas passed. It is normal to pass gas about 20 times a day. However, it is not always easy to measure the amount of passed gas. If an individual passes gas less than 20 times a day but complains of excessive gas, the problem might be something other than excessive gas. For example, the lack of ability to control the passing of gas or the foul odor of the gas might be the main problem.

Such problems are also socially embarrassing and may prompt individuals to consult a physician. These problems are not correlated to excessive gas production or Irritable Bowel Flatulence and have different treatments. <bio>Sign up for Susan Reynolds' free IBS newsletter - Overflowing with easy to implement methods to help you discover more about Irritable Bowel Flatulence at http://www.natural-irritable-bowel-syndrome-relief.com/?source=is </bio>

Dog digestive problems are most often related to poor quality food and lack of nutrients. Graduating your dog to a better diet will impact his health in ways that you would have never thought.

Quality Food And Healthy Dog Digestion...

It's obvious when a dog receives the necessary nutrients, vitamins and dog enzymes that it needs by his skin, coat and the lack of digestive problems.A quality all natural dog food canned or dry, will deliver superior results to your dog's general health.

If you are not feeding your dog a "premium" dog food then chances are he is lacking in what he needs to thrive as a dog. Don't be sold by fancy packaging, what is actually in the bag is what counts. Meat should be the first ingredient whether it is beef, lamb, chicken, turkey or fish. Avoid dog foods that say meat byproducts.

Meat byproducts could be just about anything including things that you would not want to hear. That is why it is very important to look for the primary ingredient to say the name of the meat.In the past decade many private dog food companies have made a tremendous difference in providing dogs with quality foods.

Consumers are beginning to realize that this is money well spent. If your dog is not receiving what his body needs, his coat will be dull and his skin will be flaky. He will have gas and flatulence problems daily.

Unfortunately, your dog gets what you pay for when it comes to his food and health. You can easily improve your dog's digestion problems with a high quality food. Dog enzymes are also a very effective way to provide your dog with the necessary nutrients his body needs.

It is best to start with his food and if he still has gas or flatulence problems, dog enzymes will most likely be what he needs. <bio>Janie is an avid dog lover with over twenty five years of dog care and handling experience.
Have you ever had a bad episode of digestive gas buildup? It can be very embarassing. However what most of us never consider is that fact that flatulence is a primary sign of poor digestion. Poor digestion is problematic for your long term health.

If you do a little comparative test, you will note that you feel better and your digestion is smoother when you eat in a quiet and peaceful environment. Digestion is the process of converting food into an absorbable form that the body can use to produce energy. If this does not happen, protein digestion is incomplete. If protein digestion is not taking place, then the proper number and amounts of amino acids will not be present to make other proteins which are necessary for other important bodily functions.

It is a good idea to support digestion with enzymes responsible for the healthy breakdown of nutrients.

Enzymes are catalysts which help break down nutrients into a form that the body can absorb them.

The health risks behind excessive flatulence are worthy of your immediate attention. Flatulence is caused by undigested foods that are fermenting in your digestive tract. If these foods are not eliminated quickly from your body they turn into fermenting toxins which can actually poison the body and prevent natural healing from ocurring. This is referred to as poisoning from within or endotoxemia.

Naturopathic Doctors strongly suggest that we increase roughage (fiber) in our diets.

The latest holistic medical research suggests the high incidence of heart disease, diabetes, bowel disease, hernia and diverticulitis in western countries on a lack of dietary fiber in the diet.

How much dietary fiber are you consuming on a daily basis?

Americans usually avoid high fiber diets because of a concern that it will increase gas levels and bloating. As a matter of fact eating fiber will help the normal detoxification processes, normalize your bowel and support maintenance of a healthy weight and prevent bowel diseases.

Dietary fiber amounts are now listed on most product labels in supermarkets.

It is suggested that we consume at least 35 grams of dietary fiber daily. This amount can assist in re-establishing proper digestion in your body by toning and strengthening your bowel, eliminating harmful toxins. High Fiber Foods in Your Diet represent the revolutionary way for you to lose weight, prevent disease, stay slim and have more energy. Dietary fiber and digestive enzymes are a great way to improve poor digestion. <bio>Brandon H. Masters is a Health Enthusiast, Researcher and Brandon H.
Whether your beloved canine companion suffers from chronic yeast infections, skin problems, arthritis or hip dysplasia; it's time to take a look at the facts regarding dog enzymes. In terms of ensuring your dog's health, longevity and happiness, this may be one of the most important things you read.

Digestion is a process that is facilitated by digestive enzymes. These enzymes are both created in the dog's pancreas but are also supplied when your dog eats foods like raw meat and vegetables or ingests a specially designed enzyme supplement.

Since enzymes are destroyed during the cooking process, most kibble dog foods lack these necessary vitamins, amino acids, fatty acids, probiotics and digestive enzymes that a dog needs to maintain optimal health. When a dog's pancreas has to overwork to supply these necessary enzymes, the digestive and endocrine systems become stressed. This can lead to several severe health problems as the dog enters early middle age, if not sooner.

One solution to the problem of enzyme deprivation is to reintroduce a digestive enzyme in the form of a supplement to your dog's daily diet. By providing a digestive supplement to your dog's daily diet, many health problems are at least minimized if not eliminated entirely.

Besides aiding in disease prevention through a boost in the immune system, the addition of a digestive enzyme reduces inflammation of the joints and can often help clear up severe allergies as well. For dogs that have chronic problems with their joints, especially larger breeds, dog enzymes can mean the difference between a lively healthy lifestyle or a quality of life that is so poor that euthanasia must be considered.

In the event that surgery is necessary, an enzyme supplement can speed-up the recovery process by reducing fatigue and infection that occur after inoculations, as well as the grogginess and the disorientation from the use of anesthetics. Digestive supplements can also help if the tissue around a surgical wound has been irritated.

Mention to your veterinarian that you would like to start your dog on an enzyme supplement before the surgery. Keep in mind that most vets do not carry these types of supplements and choices are limited at pet stores, but you can find a few premium digestive enzyme supplements online.

Some dogs or breeds (including mixed breeds) that are deep chested are susceptible to "Bloat", a life threatening condition that causes a gas build-up in the stomach. The dog's stomach is unable to expel gas through the normal process of flatulence, belching or vomiting which causes the stomach to dilate, expand and flip itself.

This is a condition that every dog owner should be aware of, especially since it can happen at any given time. Again, this is life threatening and a true emergency with as little as a half an hour to get the dog to the vet.

The job of digestive enzymes whether through raw food or a supplement is to support healthy digestion and with a healthy digestive system, there is little gas or flatulence. For a dog that gulps his food or the deep chested dogs, a dog enzyme supplement will ultimately aid in preventing "Bloat".

I know for a fact the importance of dog enzymes because I have seen the results myself. I have a Doberman that gulps her food in two bites and a Yellow Lab that suffered with severe allergies for many years. Although they have always been fed an ultra premium dog food; before adding a digestive enzyme to their daily diet, they both suffered with constant flatulence.

These days their coats are beautiful and their skin is intact. Their digestive systems are healthy and they have very little flatulence. Any allergy problems are minimal now. For years I traveled back and forth to the vet's office for the same problems with the same results, "none"; now my dog's see the veterinarian for basic check ups once a year.

When thinking about your dog's health, it is important to look ahead and take control. Consider what the addition of digestive enzymes can do for your dog and how much better your dog's health could be. <bio>For further information on nutritional enzymes for your dog, visit: http://www.old-dog-treats-and-rawhide.com/dog-enzymes.html Read more on what to look for in your dog's food: http://www.old-dog-treats-and-rawhide.com/dog-food-comparison.html </bio>

Frozen squirrels, flying cows, invisible roundabouts and dogs with flatulence are some of the more freaky insurance claims around. Even house insurance isn't always as straightforward as a leaking roof -- how about roof damage caused by the downdraft of helicopter blades? It may sound like Mission Impossible but there are plenty of insurance claims that take the biscuit.

1)Furry friends

Forget humans, pets suffer from strange afflictions too. Some pet insurance claims aren't as straightforward as a flea infection. Narcolepsy and flatulence are some of the more unusual ailments to bother our pooches. Although you'd be forgiven in thinking constant sleeping and flatulence were a given when it came to canine behaviour.

But the more unusual the complaint, the more costly it is to treat as it's harder to diagnose than a straightforward dose of fleas.

2)Drive on the wild side

Even if it's not some mysterious illness afflicting the nation's animal population, they still get the blame for human trial and error. According to one top car insurer, freak animal accidents are one of the main causes of blame in bizarre insurance claims.

• A frozen squirrel got the heat for falling from a tree and breaking one driver's windscreen. • One herd of poor cows were pinned for licking paintwork from a car. • Santa Claus must have been having an off day, but according to one parked motorist, a reindeer fell on his bonnet. • A rather exotic case involved a zebra colliding with a car -- in a safari park. • Even the insect world is to blame -- a wasp flew down one man's trousers causing him to prang the car in front.

3)The cheek of it

Dubious claims against local authorities include a man insisting on a new pair of pants, after he claimed the closure of a bus station toilet led to him soiling his trousers.

One shoplifter even tried to sue after she fell down the stairs fleeing from the scene of a crime, and one motorist insisted he didn't see the roundabout, despite the rather visible tree that featured in the middle of the roundabout.

4) Cat on a hot tin roof

One of the more unusual house insurance claims also involves our four-legged friends. A pet cat was sick on a TV and caused a house fire after the TV caught light. The property was seriously smoke damaged after Felix the cat's unfortunate vomiting. Felix's owner was left temporarily homeless, but don't worry, Felix escaped from the fire unharmed.

5)Monkey business

Travelling can be full of adventure and of course exotic animals. Once more animals trump the top of the list when it comes to bizarre insurance claims -- even when we're on our holidays.

• One traveller's imagination went wild when he asked his insurer if his travel insurance would cover any lost limbs in the event of a polar bear attack.

• Fraudulent claims include one couple blaming the apes on the rock of Gibraltar for pinching their camcorder -- they later admitted they dropped it.

• One woman took her eye off the ball when she claimed five times for the loss of the same eye after various made-up mishaps. <bio>T and R Direct specialise in insurance.
As the clamour for Alli continues to grow, there is some concern that many people are forgetting the basic of using any medical treatment, whether prescribed or not. Non more so than the slimming industry is the rush for new products more headstrong, with many customers not even bothering to read the instructions fully. As with ANY type of medical treatment, it is essential that they understand how the product works, any potential side effects and treat the safety advice with the respect it deserves.

To get the best out of any treatment, you need to understand and respect what is happening inside your body. A number of factors need to be considered when buying and using Alli weight loss pills, including :-

Safety Information

=B7 It is vital that you purchase your pills from a well known and trusted stockist, whether this be online or a retail outlet. The slimming industry is riddled with "get rich quick" schemes, and copy cat medicines which have duped millions of dollars out of unsuspecting customers. As a rule of thumb, if the price looks "too good to be true" it probably is - do you homework first.

=B7 Dosage. While Alli is a reduced dosage variation of the prescription drug Orlistat, all customers need to respect the dosage advice. Under use of the treatment will show no meaningful effect, although abuse of the dosage recommendation may result in unnecessary increased discomfort.

=B7 Weight loss. As the clamour for the stick like figure continues for many ladies and gentleman around the world (most often in the modelling industry) it is essential that Alli is used for valid weight loss conditions. It is not a way for wafer thin models to stay thin, and should only be taken where weight loss is required.

=B7 While the drug has been tested vigorously, and is backed by the GlaxoSmithkline pharmaceutical giant, there may be situations whereby unrecorded side effects may occur e.g. when other medicine is being taken at the same time, or there is an existing undiagnosed condition. Any reactions or strange side effects should be reported immediately.

Side Effects

The potentially uncomfortable, but not serious side effects which may occur with Alli have been well documented. They relate specifically to the drugs ability to supress the absorption of fatty acids into the body, and the disposal of unused dietary elements. Some users may experience some of the following side effects :-

=B7 Oily stools. As the Alli weight loss pill reduces the production of an enzyme in the intestine, which converts fatty dietary elements into fatty acids, some fat from digested food may not be processed. As a result the body will find a way to release basic fat content from the body, usually excreted naturally. Due to the nature of the left over substances, stools can often appear oily and emit an unfortunate odour.

=B7 Flatulence. Another means by which the body has been known to release unwanted waste is by flatulence. While this is a totally natural and harmless release, it can prove potentially embarrassing and uncomfortable as the customer may not have full control of their bowels at all times.

=B7 Vitamin deficiency. Even though Alli is specifically structured to take out the fatty content of dietary intake, some vitamins may consist of fatty content, which may not be absorbed into the body. It is therefore recommended that while using taking Alli, the user also takes a daily dose of vitamin tablets.

While the oily stools and flatulence are slightly unfortunate side effects, they can be controlled by reducing the dietary fat content to somewhere in the region of 15 grams per meal.

Conclusion

We are currently living in a world where over 65% percent of American adults are either overweight or clinically obese. The problem is now spreading quickly throughout the rest of the world, with both developing and developed countries showing increased obesity problems. Not only is this putting a massive strain on the medical profession, but there are increased health issues including possible heart attacks, diabetes, depression and bone / joint troubles.

While Alli will have an immediate impact on its own, it is strongly advised that people using the medication also reduce the fat content of their diet (thereby reducing the oily stools and flatulence issues), and take in more physical exercise. Not only will these changes impact on the weight and fitness of the person involved, they have been shown to improve their disposition and outlook on life. <bio>The author of this article runs a new site designed to educate people about this new weight loss product at http://www.allipills.com. The site also contains up to date product information on where to buy Alli. </bio>

If you think that painful indigestion and heartburn are the same thing, then you are wrong, but not alone. In fact the two are not the same at all, and require different treatment and attention. The following is a basic overview.

Understanding The Differences

While heartburn and painful indigestion are related, they are not the same. The truth is that heartburn is merely one symptom of the larger problem known as indigestion. Having indigestion, then, does not necessarily mean you have heartburn. It does not exclude you from having heartburn, but often indigestion appears without this specific symptom.

The first thing we need to do is figure out exactly what indigestion is. Indigestion can be hard to describe, but generally is viewed as discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen or chest. Nausea, bloating, and flatulence are some common symptoms that are associated with indigestion.

What are the Causes?

So just what causes painful indigestion and heartburn? Heartburn, for starters, can be caused by eating too much too fast. Other causes of heartburn include eating fatty or spicy foods and drinking alcohol.

Since heartburn is a symptom of indigestion, all of the previously mentioned causes can be associated with indigestion as well. Additionally, gastritis, smoking, ulcers of the duodenum, gastric ulcers, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs can all act as triggers for causing painful indigestion.

What are the Symptoms?

Heartburn is one symptom of indigestion. Heartburn can be described as a persistent burning feeling in the chest. Some other associated symptoms are nausea, flatulence, and the loss of appetite. Anyone who is experiencing painful indigestion, rather than moderate discomfort, should see a doctor to make sure it isn't a more serious problem.

If you experience indigestion for the first time over the age of 45 this is somewhat unusual, and may require the consultation of a medical professional. If you have lost significant weight unexpectedly, this also may require a visit to the doctor. If you are coughing up fluid (especially blood) then it is best to see a doctor immediately.

Continue reading to discover preventative tips for reducing heartburn and indigestion and to sign up for the free acid reflux, heartburn and GERD newsletter below.

Preventative Action

Here are some simple rules to help reduce or eliminate heartburn:

=95 Eat Less =96 it is a good idea to eat less, though this doesn't mean you have to starve yourself. But when you start to feel full, just stop eating. If you have to eat more often as a result, so be it.

=95 Eat Slower =96 don't rush your food, as this is a good way to trigger indigestion. Take your time while you're eating, and pause between bites, sipping water as needed.

=95 Avoid Certain Foods =96 avoid the foods that naturally bring about acid reflux or heartburn. Lists of these foods can be readily obtained by doing a simple web search. So find the list, and cut these foods out.

=95 Don't Smoke or Drink =96 it is best to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol when possible. Both are triggers for indigestion.

Just because heartburn and painful indigestion are common problems, doesn't mean you have to live with them. Follow the simple tips above, and you can be well on your way to eliminating the problem. <bio>By Kathryn Whittaker.
Canine flatulence is not a fun thing to experience. Dogs tend to have very smelly gas and, apart from the nasal assault, you`ll notice that your pet is rather uncomfortable as well. Gas in dogs can be the result of several different problems and it is best to try and figure out which one is the issue before you attempt to treat your dog.

Possible Causes of Canine Gas

Your dog is most likely suffering from a fairly minor problem, but in some cases, gas can be a sign of something more serious. If your dog appears to be in severe pain or has gone off his food, be sure to see your vet immediately. Anytime you suspect the problem could be serious, call your vet. You know your pet better than anyone else and you should follow your instincts.

Now, let`s look at some of the most common problems that cause gas in dogs.

Eating too fast. This is especially an issue in larger breeds, such as German Shepherds. If your dog is eating too quickly, he is gulping down air, as well, which reaches his intestines quickly and comes out the other end as gas. Try giving your dog smaller amounts of food, a bit at a time, to teach him to eat slower.

Change in food.

Some dogs are particularly sensitive to changes in diet and you may find that if you buy another brand of food, your dog will suffer from flatulence. This can also happen when too many table scraps are given. This can be tested by going back to the original food brand for a few days . . . the gas should be gone. The best way to avoid this problem is to make diet changes very gradual, mixing a small amount of the new food with the regular food and slowly increasing it.

Intestinal worms.

Worms are notorious for causing gassiness and it can be quite unpleasant for your dog. Check your dog`s stool for signs of worms. It`s also a good idea to de-worm your pet at least once a year, but if you find nasty critters in his feces, you may need to do this more often. Whether you de-worm at home or have the vet do it is up to you.

Poor diet.

Not all dog food is the same. Some are made almost entirely out of wheat or other similar grains and this is definitely not friendly for a dog`s stomach. An overabundance of fiber or the wrong type of carbs can wreak havoc on your puppy`s digestive system and result in gas. To solve this issue, invest in good quality dog food that is correctly balanced for your animal.

Slow intestinal tract. Dogs get out of shape, just like humans, and this often results in constipation and extra gas. If you want to reduce the chances of this occurring or to fix an existing problem, you will need to help your dog stay fit. A nice long stroll after dinner will help your and the dog`s digestive system function faster.

Bad bacteria in the intestine. Sometimes, when your dog is eating or mouthing things that he shouldn`t, bad bacteria get into his body. These can cause all sorts of problems in the intestines and it`s a good idea to get rid of them. This is possible by adding probiotics (good bacteria) to your dog`s food to reestablish a balance of healthy bacteria.

You don`t have to live with nasty gas and neither does your dog. Check the symptoms and you should be able to diagnose and treat minor problems yourself. However, if you ever have doubts, don`t hesitate to talk to your vet.<bio>Reduce dog odor with natural dog grooming supplies.
Your dog's diet can have a great impact on a variety of factors in his health. A dog that is not receiving adequate nutrition from his diet can be prone to gas, flatulence, lack of energy and skin problems.

The dog's coat may become dull and, if he is a working dog, his performance may be affected. This is due, in great part to a variance that many dog owners have imposed on dogs when they domesticated them. In essence, it is a nutritional deficiency that, though unintentional, can lead to health and digestive issues.

In many cases, digestive enzymes for dogs can correct or substantially reduce the problems. Enzymes are substances found in the body that have the ability to induce chemical reactions or accelerate these processes. Enzymes are broken down into two parts, one is a protein called apoenzyme and the other is a non-protein. The non-protein can either be a coenzyme or cofactor.

Every cell in every plant and animal contains enzymes. They regulate biochemical reactions that aid the system and sustain life. When the delicate balance of the body's digestive system is upset, various undesirable reactions can result.

Enzymes can bring balance, but if they are not present naturally in the diet then supplements must be introduced. A supplement can reduce or even eliminate the undesirable side effects of an improper diet in a dog. Gas and flatulence, skin problems and lack of energy can be turned around and the dog's coat will be shinier.

Dog digestive problems are common even in dogs whose owners feed them top of the line dog food. The problem stems from the processed diets that most domestic dogs are provided. A dog is not equipped to digest this type of diet because kibble lacks the necessary dog enzymes his body needs.

Wild canines, such as wolves, exist on a raw diet. In their natural environment, wolves will kill their prey and consume the organs first. The organs contain the vitamins and nutrients that the wolf needs and it is these vitamins and nutrients that boost their system, aiding in digestion.

A domesticated dog does not have access to animal organs from prey or a raw diet, so their body requires an enzyme supplement for proper digestion and a healthy system. A dog is naturally designed to consume raw prey. However, with domestication, man has imposed a diet of kibble which is more convenient and cost effective, but the dog is paying a heavy price because his diet is nutritionally lacking.

In such cases, enzymes for dogs are necessary to provide what the dog's diet is lacking. This is true for dogs of all ages and especially important for senior dogs. However, when a dog is started on digestive enzymes as a young dog, it will give greater assurance to the owner that the dog will be healthier as it ages.

It's never too late to start providing your best friend with an enzyme supplement for dogs. <bio>Janie is an avid dog lover with over twenty five years of dog care and handling experience.
Although the mention of stomach gas problems, such as belching, flatulence, bloating and "gas pains" often elicits some degree of amusement, all of us have gas in our intestinal tract and must expel it in some way.

Some individuals are very sensitive to the effects of gas collections in the stomach and intestinal tract and may develop significant discomfort.

If such complaints are troublesome and persistent and do not respond to simple measures, such as change in diet, a visit to your doctor could be helpful.

The gas brought back by belching comes entirely from swallowed air. We all swallow some air when eating food and drinking liquids. Most of the gas mixes with the stomach content and either enters into the small intestine or is belched back.

The air that enters the small intestine is either absorbed or it may continue through to the large intestine and is then passed rectally. Individuals may swallow more air (and thus increase stomach gas) if they have a post-nasal drip, chew gum, have poorly fitting dentures, suck on hard candies or smoke tobacco. Drinking carbonated beverages (soda or beer) or eating rapidly can also increase stomach gas.

The food we choose to eat can influence the amount of gas passed rectally. Although most of our food intake is absorbed in the small intestine, some foods, such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, baked beans, and bran are incompletely digested.

They are then broken down by bacteria in the large intestine, causing the formation of gas. A high roughage diet is important to promote bowel regularity, but excessive roughage or fiber may lead to bloating and increased flatulence.

When increasing the amount of fiber in your diet, do so gradually, allowing your intestinal tract time to adjust.Milk sugar (lactose) requires an intestinal enzyme (lactase) for digestion. When individuals lack this enzyme the lactose in milk and other dairy products enters the large intestine where the lactose is broken down by bacteria, producing gas.

Although milk is an excellent source of protein and calcium, many adults experience abdominal bloating, gas and diarrhea after consuming milk sugar. Persons from Asia and Africa are often extremely intolerant to the smallest quantity of dairy products.

Everyone passes some rectal gas, although the volume of gas is different each day. Much of the flatus comes from the nitrogen found in the air one swallows. The remainder of the flatus volume is the result of carbohydrates which are not absorbed in the small intestine and are broken down by bacteria in the large intestine.

Therefore, the amount of flatus represents a combination of swallowed air and poorly absorbed carbohydrates. The unpleasant order of flatus is due to other gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, which is produced by the bacteria.

Individuals with a long history of occasional gaseousness and abdominal discomfort need not seek medical attention. A change in the location of abdominal pain, significant increase in the frequency or severity of symptoms, or onset of new symptoms in individuals over the age of 40 are some of the reasons to see your doctor. <bio>Learn all you wanted to know about stomach gas http://www.stomach-gas.info </bio>

Why should I get my colon cleansed? Consider what function your colon serves in the body; it is a waste disposal system, much like a sewer system. Our colons are designed to carry toxic waste out of our bodies in a timely fashion. If they get partially blocked, they can back up just like a municipal sewer system. This can cause a continuous full feeling, bloating, gas, flatulence, and irregular bowel movements. Colon cleansing can get your internal sewer system back to its regular self.

Fecal matter backs up in the colon by sticking to its walls and collecting in pockets in your colon. As this fecal matter ages, it breeds more toxins. These toxins leach back into our body and can create a multitude of health problems. Studies have shown that between seventy-five to ninety percent of all illnesses, including many cancers, can be traced back to problems that started in the colon. By keeping your colon clean, you can help keep the rest of your body healthy.

Symptoms that an unhealthy colon can cause include:
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Irregular bowel movements
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Bloating
- Gas
- Flatulence
- Difficulty or inability to lose weight
- A spaced-out feeling or lack of focus
- Joint pain and stiffness
- Hemorrhoids due to excess strain in passing hard stools
- Blemishes and acne
- Psoriasis
- Halitosis (Yes, chronic bad breath can be a symptom of an unhealthy colon!)

Colon cleansing can help eliminate the symptoms above that make your life uncomfortable and keep you from developing other, more serious problems. A colon cleanse followed by a colon-friendly diet will get you and your colon on the way to better health.

So what is a colon-friendly diet? A colon-friendly diet is one that helps your colon cleanse itself. It's a diet that allows your colon to maintain itself by passing healthy waste regularly. It should include fiber and probiotics. Fiber can be added to your diet with fibrous fruits and veggies, beans, and food supplements like flaxseed that you can add to smoothies and such. Your colon-friendly diet should eliminate refined sugar, red meat, animal fat, and heavily processed foods including most fast foods and many restaurant meals. Your diet should also eliminate dairy products with the exception of yogurt. Yogurt actually has living, good-for-your-colon bacteria in it.

A colon cleanse is a good thing to consider if you want to improve the health of your colon. But colon cleansing is not recommended for everyone. Persons with diverticulitis, Crohn's Disease, and other bowel ailments should consult their doctor before undergoing a colon cleanse. You should also consult your pharmacist or doctor about taking any herbal colon cleansing products. Some herbs change the absorption of prescription drugs.

So why should you get your colon cleansed? To feel better and to stay healthier two great reasons to get and keep your colon clean.
Because irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that almost defies diagnosis due to the unusually wide range of symptoms and treatments, the most common sense way of dealing with it is with laxatives. A laxative can be easily defined as a medication that increases bowel function. Laxatives can be broken down into four major categories: fiber, osmotic laxatives, stimulant laxatives and emollients. Since there is no known cure for IBS and treatment for the disease is aimed solely at treating symptoms, many sufferers have to combine two or more forms of treatment.

A steep increase in dietary fiber in a patient's diet is the most common prescription for dealing with IBS-C. As stated above, however, this doesn't work for everyone. For those who do experience relief with the use of fiber, studies have shown that fiber helps IBS-C sufferers by helping to ease stool passage and increasing overall satisfaction with bowel movements, but does not help in the ease of pain.

Fiber is not without it's side effects, either. Increases of flatulence, distension and bloating can lead to a low number of suffers agreeing to fiber treatment, especially during the first few weeks when side effects are at their highest. Studies of IBS patients have shown that the minimum increase in a patients diet for effective use is 12 grams of fiber per day.

As treatment continues, the amount of fiber prescribed increases to 20 or even 25 grams per day over several weeks. To start with, foods rich in dietary fiber should be increased. For patients that do not respond to natural increases in fiber, a second option is the introduction of over the counter fiber supplements into the diet is recommended. If your doctor has decided that an increase in fiber isn't right for you, other options such as osmotic laxatives and then later stimulant laxatives can be tried. Stimulant laxatives are seen as a last resort because they have the potential for abuse.

Osmotic laxatives are defined as substances that cause an influx of water into the small intestine and colon, helping to clean you out. When used, they begin working in 1-2 days. The most commonly prescribed osmotics are magnesium and phosphate. When taken, the laxatives are only partially absorbed by the small intestine, the leftovers allow water to be pushed into the area and cleansing takes place. But these are not without side effects. Bloating, cramping and flatulence are common with the use of osmotics.

As is the case with every laxative, the concern that the user isn't absorbing nutrients and is just passing them is valid. When used in excess, osmotics can cause severe diarrhoea and dehydration. Those patients that suffer from kidney or heart disease can suffer even more extreme side effects, such as water volume overload and electrolyte disorders.

Stimulant laxatives should be used only as a last resort. They directly stimulate the nerves in the large intestine and hamper absorption of water. They take effect within hours. The most well known stimulant laxative is castor oil, which can cause severe cramps and diarrhoea.

Emollients can be broken down into two categories, docusates and mineral oil. Docusates allow extra water to enter the stool, thereby making is softer. Mineral oil coats the stool, therefore not allowing water to leave it. Both are effective ways to help IBS-C suffers who are helped by laxatives. <bio>Susan Reynolds has an interest in IBS. It is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, cramping, flatulence, diarrhea, mucus in the stool, and constipation. Often diarrhea and constipation alternate. 1 in 5 American adults suffer from IBS and 1 out of every 10 visits to the doctor is for IBS. There are several irritable bowel syndrome solutions that are worth trying.

Treating IBS is difficult because the cause is not clearly understood. But there are some treatments that have proven helpful. IBS treatments are very individual so much is dependant on trial and error. A combination of medication and lifestyle changes can be effective.

Anticholinergic medications affect the nervous system and thus relieve the pain of a spastic bowel. Antidepressant medications such as amitriptyline or Imipramine which help reduce pain by inhibiting the activity of the pain neurons.

There are two newer drugs on the market that are specifically designed to treat IBS. Alosetron or Lotronex is a nerve receptor antagonist that relaxes the colon and slows down the speed that the waste travels through the lower bowel. This drug does have some heavy side effects so it can only be prescribed for serious cases under a physicians care.

The second drug is Tegaserod or Zelnorm which has FDA approval in women. It was not found effective in men. It is meant for short term use and acts on the neurotransmitter serotonin coordinating muscles and nerves in the intestine. It does have some side effects that you should discuss with your doctor.

Medications are generally a mix of laxatives and stool softeners as well as anti-diarrhea medications such as Imodium with the active ingredient loperamide or Lomotil with the active ingredient diphenoxylate. Codeine may be used in IBS where diarrhea is prominent.

Antispasmodics can be used when cramps or diarrhea are prominent. Antispasmodics can be combined with barbiturates and tranquilizers such as Librax or Donnatal.

Studies have shown that rifaximin a non absorbable antibiotic is effective in treating flatulence and abdominal bloating which lead back to the question whether Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a result of a bacterial overgrowth.

Even cannabis has been used to treat IBS. Although completely illegal in the USA medicinal cannabis is legal in Canada and as such prescribed by some doctors to their patients. It reduces pain and nausea, slows the bowels spasms, and aids in sleep.

Alternative treatments include the use of probiotics which is beneficial live bacteria that is often missing from the human stomach or is diminished due to the use of antibiotics. Studies have shown a definite link between taking lactobacillus plantarum and the reduction of IBS abdominal pain. Use in conjunction with an anti-parasitic like garlic, cloves, ginger, or grapefruit seed extract shows very good results because the bad bacteria is killed off and the good bacteria replaced.

Fiber supplements such as Metamucil or psyllium husks taken with lots of water help to relieve constipation. Diarrhea medications like Imodium should be kept on hand to help control diarrhea and spasmodic pain in the bowel. The elimination of gassy foods such as soda pop, beans, broccoli and cabbage may also prove helpful.

Acupuncture has also shown some good results in some IBS patients. Traditional Chinese acupuncture shows better results than its Western counterpart.

There are many irritable bowel syndrome solutions. Finding the right one is often a matter of trial and error but there is hope so a patient should not give up. <bio>http://www.methodsofhealing.com/Bowel_Control.html </bio>

Peeper Scientific name:Piper nigrum Linn. Family:PIPERACEAE Vernacular name:Prik Thai

Pepper is native to the monsoon forests of the Malabar coast in southwest India. The pepper vine is now grown in much of tropical Asia. Pepper is the most popular spice in most of the recipes in cookery, to aid digestion, to preserve food and to enchance its flavour. Pepper has a warm, woody smell that is fresh, pungent and agreeably aromatic. Pepper is neither sweet nor savoury, just pungent, and can therefore be used in both types of dish. It is so popular that it has given its name to a wide rang of dishes.

Pepper is perennial vine with stout stem, dark green leaves, white flowering spikes and green to dark red fruit. The vine takes seven to eight years to teach full maturity, and continues to bear fruit for 15-20 years. It is trained up posts of the tress grown for hade in coffee plantations.

There are black, white and green peppercorns. The black pepper which are the whole berries picked unripe and sum dried until shriveled. Is the most widely used, while the white peppercorns are ripe berries with the red skins removed before being bleached white by drying in the sun. it is hotter and less subtle than the black. It is mostly used by sprinkling it in powdered form in many cooked dishes. Green peppercorns are the immature berry pickled in brine or freeze-dried while still fresh, is not as hot and has a clean, fresh taste.

Pepper is said to help relieve flatulence and to have diuretic properties. It is the main source of heat in tropical Asian food.

Lemon Grass Scientific name:Cymbopogon citrates Stapf Family:GRAMINEAE Vernacular name:Ta Khrai

Lemon grass is found throughout Southeast Asia. The culinary stem and leaf have a distinct lemon flavour. The base and lover shoots of the plant are used in cooking, and give a fresh, elusively aromatic taste in many Thai dishes.

A perennial tufted grass, up to 1.5 n has clumped, bulbous stems becoming leaf-blades and a branched panicle of flowers. Lemon grass grown readily in almost any soils, its bulb and leaves constantly multiplying. It is easily grown and thrives in a hot, sunny climate with some rainfall. It is better suited in sandy soil, which produces a higher content of the essential oil.

It is a common ingredient in Thai cooking. The coarse, long flat leaves are normally discarded, and only around 10-15 cm of the bulbous base used. If the lemon grass is to be eaten raw, the outer layers of the bulb should be peeled away until the pinkish ring inside appears; the tender portion is then finely sliced. Lemon grass is also bruised and added whole to many curry dishes, or sliced before pounded to a paste with other ingredients and added to many dishes. Lemon grass remains fibrous safer cooking so avoid chewing it. It combines well with garlic, shallots and chillies, and with fresh coriander to favour fish, shellfish, chicken and pork.

In the past, lemon grass was prescribed to relieve flatulence and as sedative. The culinary stem is used for stomachache, diarrhea, headaches, fevers and is antiseptic. The essential oil is used for cosmetics and food, and in aromatherapy to improve circulation and muscle tone. The antiseptic oil treats athlete's foot and acne, and when sprayed, reduces air-borne infections. <bio>http://www.beautybathbodyspa.com http://www.Buybeautyskincare.com http://www.healthspasupply.com </bio>

Are there natural ways to reduce the gas you pass? Try preventive measures first. Learn how to move gas through your intestines more readily.

While there are several reasons you may find yourself to be gassy, there are many solutions for reducing belching, flatulence, abdominal bloating and pain. Excess gas commonly is associated with irritable bowel syndrome. Other serious gastrointestinal disorders usually produce other symptoms besides just being "gassy."

Doctors usually recommend a plan to help move gas through the intestines more readily, combined with preventive measures, such as eliminating certain foods from your diet and avoiding chewing gum. Although many products on store shelves promise to help, their success is not guaranteed and often depends on the individual. There are also prescription medicines and some alternative therapies.

Keeping a diary of the foods and beverages you consume can help you systematically eliminate one food or group of foods at a time to determine which may be most responsible for your symptoms. One of the first questions at the top of the list would be 'Could this be related to dairy products?'. If it is, the first step should be to eliminate these products from your diet for about seven days. If you feel better, then try to add dairy products back to your diet in smaller amounts to see if you can tolerate them.

There are some recommended home remedies and lifestyle changes. Chew more slowly and thoroughly because gas can be a sign of undigested food, the enzymes in saliva begin the first stage of breaking down food in the body's absorption process. Avoid foods you know cause indigestion. Common food sources of gas include Brussels sprouts, bran, beans, milk products, cabbage, artificial sweeteners, carbonated beverages and alcohol. Take a short walk after you eat to prevent gas accumulation.

Maintaining a regular exercise schedule in the form of walking, jogging and calisthenics will help stimulate the passage of gas through the digestive tract. Perform chest-to-knee stretches. Lying on your back, bring your right knee to your chest. Hold for 10 seconds and, then repeat with the other knee.

If those remedies don't provide relief, your doctor may recommend that you take an over-the-counter antacid, activated charcoal, or a lactase or bismuth product.

Antacids contain aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide (known as Milk of Magnesia), calcium carbonate, or other ingredients individually or in various combinations. Antacids help to control the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, a condition in which the stomach's juices (acid and digestive enzymes) flow backward, or reflux, into the esophagus.

Tablets of activated charcoal may provide relief from gas in the colon. Studies have shown that when taken before and after a meal, lower-intestinal gas is reduced.

However, activated charcoal can cause black stools and constipation. While these are harmless side effects, black stools can be confusing to a physician, because color changes in stool can be a sign of a serious illness. Evidence concerning the benefit of activated charcoal is contradictory. Its effect in alleviating symptoms of intestinal gas has been supported by some studies yet refuted by others. As a result, physicians may recommend that patients consider trying activated charcoal to see whether its use results in some symptom relief. The usual dose is two to four tablets taken just before eating and one hour after meals.

Gas is often a symptom of lactose intolerance, which makes digesting dairy products difficult. It occurs when the body has too little of the enzyme lactase in the small intestine to break down lactose, the main sugar in milk and milk-based products. Although lactose intolerance can happen at any age, it tends to affect most people as they grow older. Lactase comes in liquid or tablet form. Adding a few drops to milk before drinking or chewing lactase tablets just before eating helps people who have difficulty breaking down lactose.

Bismut has salts to relieve inflammatory conditions of the stomach and intestines and can sometimes relieve gas. It also reduces the odor of unpleasant smelling gas caused by hydrogen sulfide, a sulfur-containing compound. Like activated charcoal, bismuth may result in black stools. Take before or after meals, on either an empty or full stomach.

In summary, stomach and intestinal gas is normal. Excess gas can be distressing, but rarely is it caused by a serious medical disorder. If your symptoms cannot be easily controlled or you have additional problems such as abdominal pain, change in bowel habits, or rectal bleeding, you need to contact your doctor's office. <bio>While there are several reasons you may find yourself to be gassy, there are many solutions for reducing belching, flatulence, abdominal bloating and pain. Excess gas commonly is associated with irritable bowel syndrome. http://www.stomachgashelp.info </bio>

There are some side effects of Folic Acid that you should be aware of. While they rarely occur you need to identify them so that you can see your doctor about reducing the amount you take or stop taking it all together. The side effects can be mild or severe. Mild side effects include are nausea, loss of appetite, bloated abdomen, flatulence, bitter taste, insomnia or difficulty concentrating. Your doctor will likely reduce the amount of Folic Acid you take and monitor the results closely.

If you are experiencing severe side effects to Folic Acid such as difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of your lips, tongue or face, or hives then you need to see immediate medical attention and stop taking the Folic Acid. Other side effects that have been noted include fever, general weakness or discomfort, reddened skin, shortness of breath, skin rash or itching, and wheezing and they can vary in severity. For more info see <a href="http://www.omegaflaxseedoil.com/benefits/omega3/essential_Fatty_Acids_Found" >http://www.omegaflaxseedoil.com/benefits/omega3/essential_Fatty_Acids_Found= _In_Eggs.html on acid enriched eggs

The University of Maryland reports that the instances of having a side effect from Folic Acid is rare but if you take a large dose of 15,000 mcg or more you may experience stomach pain, disrupted sleep patterns, skin reactions, and seizures. According to the Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, Folic Acid is very safe in doses of 5,000 mcg or less. It is the larger doses that cause the side effects including nausea, decreased appetite, bloating, gas, decreased ability to concentrate, and insomnia to occur. If you suffer from seizures a large dose of Folic Acid will affect the effectiveness of the common medication Phenytoin, also known as Dilantin.

If you take Folic Acid, you should add a supplement of B Vitamins, especially 12, because the Folic Acid can lead to a deficiency. While the side effects from Folic Acid rarely occur, the risk is higher if you have a Vitamin B deficiency. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking Folic Acid, make sure you talk to your doctor so action can be taken. <bio>You can also find more info on http://www.omegaflaxseedoil.com/benefits/omega3/essential_And_Metabolic_Fat= ty_Acids_In_Depression.html on metabolic fatty acids and http://www.omegaflaxseedoil.com/benefits/omega3/essential_Fatty_Acids_And_A= ttention_Deficit.html on fatty acid deficiency. </bio>

Clinical studies have shown that those who have taken Protonix gain full control of their acid reflux.

Some of the common side effects are stomach pain, lack of sleep, loose bowels, hyperglycemia, eructation, flatulence, and headache. Protonix is not for most people. People who have a liver disease, children, women are pregnant or may be come pregnant, or breast feeding should not take this medication. This medicine is recommended for adults only.

More severe and serious side effects are eye damage, swelling in the pancreas, face, and throat, blisters, and liver damage. There are some medications that may not be taken with Protonix, such as Iron, Ampicillin, and Ketoconazole. Talk to your doctor if you are taking any these medications. Your doctor may start you off on a lower dosage.

If you are still having acid reflux your doctor may add 8 more weeks to the term of your treatment. All doctors and drug stores recommend that you not take over 240mg per day. Protonix is only a 8 week treatment, but your doctor may suggest that you take it longer.

There is little known about overdose in humans, when it comes to Protonix. Studies in animals overdose indicate reduction in activity and coordination. If you are not sure, but suspect that you have taken an overdose, please contact your doctor or hospital immediately. Increases in this medication may cause bleeding in the belly and could cause death.

If you miss a dose take it as soon as possible. If it is time for your next dose keep to your schedule, just take one pill.

This medicine should be stored at room temperature and may be taken with or without food. In long-term studies, protonix created gastrointestinal tumors of the rare type, as well as being carcinogenic.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, can be triggered by a wide range of foods. Certain foods can trigger abnormal functioning of the digestive system, thereby causing a number of symptoms. If you have determined that your syptoms are related to milk intake, you have several options available to enable you to continue enjoying the taste of milk, without consuming milk products. Some experts claim that cow's milk actually contains some substances that are not ideal for consumption by humans. They also claim that certain dairy products can be problematic for our digestive system. It has been noted that processed milk can produce more adverse affects. Following are a number of tips that will help those whose inability to tolerate dairy products causes suffering from IBS. Milk, cheese, yogurt and other types of dairy products often trigger symptoms in people with IBS. They contain ingredients that cause bloatedness and flatulence. If you are accustomed to having milk and dairy products, you may think it hard to find enjoyable dairy alternatives but read on.

If you decide to eliminate dairy products from your diet, be sure to take vitamins and calcium supplements to replace vital nutrients that will be absent from your diet. You might find it effective to take a calcium supplement to ensure that you are satisfying your daily calcium requirement. However you may also want to revamp your diet to capture these nutrients, as there are certain vegetables and other calcium-rich foods that you can include.

There are a wide range of dairy substitutes available. For example, milk can easily be substituted by commonly-available soy. Soy milk will provide you with conventional milk taste but will be gentler on your digestive system. Also available are rice milk and nut milk are also available from most health food and some grocery stores. All of these will provide you with a substitute for the taste of milk yet are absent the ingredients that cause adverse reactions. If you like yogurt, cheese, and ice cream, there are also good-tasting substitutes available for these. There are several types of no-dairy yogurts on the market. You can consume gluten or casein-free cheeses to satisfy your cheese cravings and using these will prevent your IBS symptoms.

As lactose intolerance is one of the largest triggers for IBS, by choosing dairy substitutes, you will be able to enjoy dairy taste without having the resulting problematic digestive reactions. Evaluating alternative recipes that use dairy alternative products will definitely help to alleviate the symptoms of IBS. Removing dairy products from your diet, or substituting them with other products as well as removing other trigger foods, aid normal digestive tract functioning. <bio>Patricia Smith contributes to several online magazines, including http://lutad.com and http://foxow.com </bio>

In what for many was a surprise, but welcome relief, the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) have formally endorsed the first weight loss drug to be available over the counter without prescription, named "alli". The release of this anti-obesity wonder drug may well have come at the right time with recent reports showing a growing problem in both the European and US markets (with Europe particularly disappointing of late).

While the US has been troubled by obesity for some time, with some 65 percent of adults overweight or obese, the problem is starting to take hold in Europe. While weight loss pills have attracted some negative comment in the past, the fact the FDA have approved the product offers a great deal of support to many.

The drug itself is a reduced strength version of the prescription weight loss drug Xenical (also known as Orlistat) which has an impressive safety record, and encouraging clinical trial results. In the original trials of Xenical it was shown that when used in conjunction with a traditional weight loss program, the treatment resulted in an average loss of 12.4 pounds over 6 months (the placebo patients only losing half that amount).

Even though many potential customers may see the alli pill as a quick path to weight loss, it works better along side traditional weight loss programs such as light exercise, and careful dieting. There can be some slightly uncomfortable side effects if the customer continues with a high fat diet while using alli, with increased flatulence and rectal discharge (very soft stools) as the drug acts to reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the body.

While Xenical was originally formulated by Roche, worldwide pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithkline acquired the US rights some 12 months ago, and are behind the release of "alli". They have a massive marketing machine behind them, and alli is expected to become one of the latest wonder drugs in the US market. As the market for weight control and weight loss products continues to grow, the fact that customers will not need to arrange a potentially embarrassing visit to the Doctor prior to receiving the drug may prove a big attraction for many.

While it is still early days for alli, the signs are encouraging and it has prompted a lot of comment on and off the internet. Obesity and overweight problems are for many a personal issue, and the fact that you can buy alli pills over the counter is a great attraction. <bio>The author of this article runs a new site designed to educate people about this new weight loss product at http://www.allipills.com. The site also contains up to date product information on where to buy Alli. </bio>
