Preparing The Foundations

Start by marking out the site using and a length of string. Do not bother trying to form perfectly =96 they will not look natural once the rockery is completed.

Guidelines usually get in the way when you are digging, so mark out the area by dropping a thin trail of sand around the outside; then remove the pegs and string and lay them to one side.

To provide adequate foundations, the bed should be dug to a depth of 150mm. On a lawn, remove the turf first; this can be re-used if you are installing extra drainage so stack it to one side. Dig out all the fertile topsoil and place it in a large heap as close to the edge of the hole as possible. If the topsoil is clay or some other soil, which drains badly, remove it completely to another part of the garden.

Once you reach the required depth, compact the soil in the bottom of the hole by trampling it down with your feet; this will help to prevent the rockery from sinking. On a site with bad drainage, install the sump at this stage.

Now prepare the bedding material. Clear a space by the side of the hole where you can comfortably mix the topsoil or compost with the grit. It should be mixed in the ration of one part grit to five parts topsoil or compost. Throw five shovelfuls of topsoil or compost on the ground and one shovel full of grit on top. This is quite a wasteful expenditure of our energy when we need our energy available each day and night for the important job of keeping our organs, tissues, hormones, and cells operating healthfully.

If misuse of our energy goes on over time, our soil may become infertile. We absolutely need healthy blood on a regular basis and we need this rich, nourished blood flowing throughout the uterus. When our blood becomes tired, lacks oxygen, or is nutritionally deficient, it can become sluggish, slow down and even stagnate. This means our smooth flow of blood is compromised, thus compromising fertility.

Enough Chi flowing smoothly in all organs, muscles and channels (including the uterus): Chi is a Chinese word for life force, or energy, or molecular energy. It is what we are made of in that, if we have no Chi, we have no life force. Simple stated, when we are born we have a full tank of Chi, and when the tank is empty, we die. While alive and during the reproductive years, it makes sense that in order to create a new life inside of you, you must have a reasonable life force yourself. If you don't have enough Chi or life force in your own system, where do you think the Chi will come from to create a new life for 9 mos.? Nature, and infinite wisdom, just knows that if a woman's Chi tank is too low, then reproduction falls below the line of possibility. It's a no-brainer, in that, for a fetus to grow it needs a certain amount of Chi and blood.

Mental and emotional energy systems need to be balanced in such a way that a woman trying to conceive, is enhancing her overall health versus burdening her overall health: Thoughts and emotions are as much Chi as your elbow or liver is. They are just a more subtle form of Chi. Much like the wind, in that, we don't "see" wind, but it exists because we see the effects of wind even though it is invisible. This more subtle form of Chi, like our thoughts and emotions, are just as important as the food we eat. Every time we think a thought or have an emotion, there is literally a chemical reaction in our body. To put it in simple terms, the by-product of these chemical reactions are either toxic and thus, burdensome to our system; or the by-product of these chemical reactions align with optimal functioning of our system.

When I teach a woman to observe herself in this more subtle form of Chi, it is often surprising to her that she is much more plagued with thoughts of fear, worry, or depression, in relation to her fertility, than she realized consciously. Some of it she was aware of, but the extent of it is more the eye-opener. The chemical by-product of these thoughts and emotions over a prolonged period of time, become burdensome to the system, contributing to a decreased flow of Chi and Blood. It requires practice to become aware, and then become intentional about our choice of thoughts.

"Ingredients," or choices, are either enhancing or inhibiting our fertile soil. Either our fertility switch is 'on' or 'off.'

No woman purposely turns her fertility switch off, but, unknowingly, she could be making choices, day after day, that are preventing optimal and fertile soil. Start where you're at and begin making the best choices you can in order to fertilize your soil in such a way that pregnancy and healthy birth are a natural outcome. Or maybe you have an older , and want to know if it is okay to give breeding a try. There is lots to consider when deciding when a mare is ready to be bred.

Horses are sexually mature in their yearling year, although it is not unheard of for a filly to cycle before she is a full year old. Generally though, they are about a year and a half old the first time they come in season.

It is fully possible for a yearling to get in foal. If you have your fillies out with colts, it is essential to separate them by a year old. Colts can in fact become fertile as early as eight months old, so a pregnancy can happen far earlier than many owners imagine.

While it is possible to breed a yearling, most agree that it isn't a good idea. Generally a yearling is the equivalent of a 12-14 year old girl. She is reaching , but has no actual maturity of her own. She is far too young to be pregnant and .

A two-year-old is a bit better, but still very young. Two-year-olds are only the equivalent of a 14-16 year old girl, still awfully young to be pregnant. By the time the filly foals, she will be the equivalent of 17. As you probably know from human pregnancies, are much higher risk than mothers in their 20s. Likewise, there are more risks for a two-year-old filly when in foal, than there would be if she were bred a bit later in life.

By three, a filly is more mature and potentially ready to be bred. While many still feel that it is too early, she is the equivalent of a 16-18 year old, and will have the foal when she is the equivalent of 19. This is still young, but it is out of the danger zone, and she will be mature enough to have a better chance of being a .

The ideal breeding age range for horses is 4-15 years of age. Many mares remain fertile into their 20s. This is because horses do not go through menopause the way that humans do. In fact, there are stories of mares well into their late 20s who were accidentally bred, and had a healthy foal the following year. While this is far from ideal, it is certainly possible.

If a mare has been bred before, it is usually not a problem to breed her later in life. However, a maiden mare is less likely to get in foal as she ages, and many not retain her pregnancy as well as a horse who has foaled before. After a mare reaches 15 years of age, her fertility is at risk. Many breeders will not breed a maiden mare who is over 15.

With good veterinary supervision, there is no good reason not to breed a maiden mare as old as 18. As long as the mare owner is aware of the reduced fertility, and understands that she may not catch at all, usually there is little real risk. Some stallion owners offer special deals to owners of senior mares, not charging the full stud fee until the mare is confirmed in foal, or even until the foal arrives.

If a mare has been bred regularly, she can safely continue to have foals until her mid 20s. As long as the owner carefully maintains her, and understands the increased risks involved in foaling a senior mare, it can be a good choice for the proven broodmare.

No matter the age of the mare, it is essential to carefully monitor your horse's pregnancy and maintain her in good condition.
