When you are shopping for a dog bed for your dog, there are a few things that you need to avoid so that you can make an informed, intelligent purchase. Don't buy the first dog bed that you see, take your time and shop around. If possible, bring your dog with you when you shop for a bed so that you can make sure that you get one that is large enough. Otherwise, keep handy these five common mistakes and take care to avoid them.

It is not chew proof

If you have a chewer and your bed is not chew proof, you may come home one day to a shredded doggie bed. Check the liner as well as the bed itself and see how durable they are. Some beds are chew proof and you can purchase new liners or use old blankets for the inside of the bed. Another consideration here is regarding chewing. You don't want your dog chew his or her bed and get something stuck in their throat or choke. This is pretty unlikely, but there is always a possibility. It is better to be safe than sorry.

It is cheap

When you buy a cheap doggie bed, you usually get what you pay for. Chances are your cheap doggie bed won't last long. You may do better to get a slightly more expensive or better made bed for your dog. With a better made dog bed, preferably by a name that you can trust, you know it will hold up well.

It is not the right size

You don't want to get your bull dog a doggie bed that is made for a toy poodle and you don't want to get your Chihuahua a doggie bed that is made for a Great Dane. The point here is, make sure that your doggie bed is the right size for your dog. Your dog should be able to comfortably turn around, curl up and stretch out in his or her bed. You do not, however, want to get a doggie bed that is too big for the dog either. If the dog feels lost in a huge bed, they may not want to stay in it. If you get a bed for a puppy, remember that puppies grow - fast! You may want to get a larger bed, but pile a comforter or blanket in it so that the puppy can make a nice little nest in which to sleep.

It is not washable

The last thing that you want is a doggie bed that you can not clean. You want a bed that is fully washable. Dog beds can become quite odiferous over time, plus, they can harbor fleas. Get a bed that you can wash the lining regularly and wipe down the bed itself if it is not able to be thrown in the washing machine. Use a mild solution of bleach and water to clean your dog's bed. This is the best way to deodorize and disinfect the bed and bedding.

It does not suit your dog

Finally, make sure that the bed fits the dog. If the dog is warm natured, he will swelter in a bed lined with sheepskin. If your dog is cold natured she will freeze if you don't throw in some blankets. The bottom line is when seeking a dog bed, think of the dog first. What is safe and what suits them best. <bio>Before you purchase any dog bed, find the great variety of discount dog bed and up to date information at http://www.dogkindercare.com </bio>

We all love our pets, but it is so easy to become busy that sometimes it is difficult to care for our pets the way we want to. Maybe you need to work long hours at the office as you finish a project, or maybe you just simply feel bad for leaving Spot at home all day. Besides hiring a pet sitter, you could take your dog to doggie day care. That's right! People do it for their children, and a pet is a vital member of the family who deserves tiptop care as well.

Taking your pet to doggie day care will afford you peace of mind. You will arrive home in the evening after a long day's work and know that your pet has been well taken care of, that they had fun during day, they stayed out of trouble, and that they were able to learn and play with their new doggie and day care worker friends. You will not feel like you have abandoned Spot, and he will be so happy to see you when you pick him up on your way home from the office. And besides, he will thank you for a fun filled day with his excitement at seeing you pick him up.

Even if you can't afford to take your precious pet to doggie day care every day, maybe you could take him once a week or even every other week as a treat to show your pet that you know staying at home can be boring and that you understand. It will also show your pet that you love him, and that you make arrangements in order to provide care for him in the best way possible when you are unable to provide it yourself.

There are several benefits to your pet as he attends doggie day care as well. Many pet owners who take their dog to day care say that they see an increased enthusiasm emulate from their pet as they approach the day care center day after day. The pets truly do make doggie friends, and some even have best friends! Dogs are social creatures, and they thrive on spending time with other dogs and other people, especially in a cage or kennel-free zone. By the end of the day, they will have used up sufficient energy and they will be happy to sit on the couch and relax with you=85you had a long day of work, and he had a long day of fun. What more could a dog, or pet owner ask for?

As people become more and more busy with their jobs and as work hours increase, sometimes it is hard for the pet owner to make the best decision about the care of their pet while they are gone for the majority of the day. They don't want Spot to be so bored at home that he gets into mischief, nor do they want to have to give Spot away. Doggie day care is an excellent option for dogs. They love it, they make friends, and they have fun! At the same time, the owner has peace of mind because they are confident their best friend is being well taken care of while they are away. Doggie day care is a win-win situation for all involved! <bio> http://www.pet-super-store.com/pet-supplies/elevated-dog-feeders/ http://www.pet-super-store.com/pet-supplies/pet-carriers/ </bio>

Puppies are cute cuddly and so full of life throughout the infancy stage. It is at this time when puppy training is vital - because believe it or not these cute cuddly little characters can cause so much havoc in the home - with their outbursts of action packed antics all brought on by excitement.

Fun it may be at the time but when you waken to find the remains of a chewed slipper- scratch marks on the furniture and puppy poo to mark the pup`s presence then it is time for an obedience check

How do you go about house training a puppy - simple the same as you would potty train a baby? Yes your right it will take time and patience but all worthwhile in the end.

To be honest the whole process of puppy training can be quite fulfilling as well as fun. There will be times when you may get frustrated throughout the process but just the fact that you have accomplished what others would see as impossible is an achievement in its self. To have an obedient dog standing at the side of its master (you) will make you proud to be the canines owner. Even evening walks are so much more enjoyable with an obedient dog.

You have to think about safety for yourself and that of your pooch if they are not trained. Dangers by the roadside and where children are concerned - have to be a couple of vital factors why puppy training is important.

Puppies need to use the bathroom regular sometimes as much as up to 8 to 10 visits a day - this gradually lessons to about 3 to four times at 30 weeks old.

Our little four legged friends are clean animals but still need nurturing with correction lessons teaching them right from wrong.

If you are going to kennel/crate train the puppy then build the shelter to accommodate the size of the dog to have comfort. Section the kennel in half while the puppy is small and as he/she begins to grow then remove the partition. By not splitting the shelter in two the pup may decide to go to the back of the crate and leave their mark there.

The kennel/crate should be big enough to permit the dog to stand easily and stretch. As long as the dog can manoeuvre around then that is all that matters.

Timing is crucial when puppy training - have a doggie diary with a schedule of times and adhere to them. Work this pattern around what is best suited for you and your dog.

For example: 10 to 10:30 am. lead the puppy from the enclosure outside and always keep to the same spot every day. The puppy will get used to this allotted space and in time will make his or her own way there. Remember puppies are like babies they need feeding. Times for this is best after the first morning release - approx about 30 minutes. A little later let the puppy out for a friendly romp in the garden for a play without commands.

Leading the puppy from the kennel is an action you have to repeat over and over again at the scheduled times you have logged in your doggie diary.

Before retiring to blanket street take the puppy outside again and let them have a little time to investigate and nosey around - in other words sniffing every nook and cranny.

If you are serious with this practice then the puppy`s needs have to be checked again around 3 am in the morning. It is a good idea to have a catchphrase for the pup to relate to. Words like (want to poo poo) will do the trick.

When your puppy is at your side and obeying your commands it is then you will know why that famous saying came about - GOOD DOGGIE. <bio>Fact has it that an obedient dog is a friend for life. Take your pet on holiday http://www.benidormbeaches.com </bio>

Knowing first aid can save the life of your dog. Just like people, dogs have accidents and need medical attention sometimes. And the thing is that sometimes there is just not time to get to the vet, that is when doggie first aid is so handy to know. Knowing what should go into your animal first aid kit is the key to keeping your dog alive and well no matter what happens. If you do a lot of hiking and walking in places like parks or on trails then you should also have a kit in your car for emergencies out of the home.

Most of the items in your doggie first aid kit are similar to those you have in your regular one for the family. There are however some things that need to be specialized for the animal of your life. Here are some of the basics that your first aid kit cannot do without:

Hydrogen peroxide Sterile eyewash solution made specifically for pets Roll of absorbent cotton Some cotton balls Clean, white cotton sock (to cover wounded paws) Gauze pads Tape Small scissors with rounded tips Tweezers Instant ice pack Bulb syringe for suctioning mucous from mouth or nose Injection syringe without the needle (to give liquid medication) Small flashlight

All of these things should fit neatly into a container that has a nice tight lid. This will help to keep everything clean and sterile no matter how long it is sitting on the shelf or in the car. It is also a good idea to have the name of the vet and his or her phone number right there on the lid so that even in a panic you will know what to do. You may even want to put the number of the local emergency animal hospital as well in case something happens early in the morning or late at night when the regular vets are all closed.

Bee stings are one of the most common of all dog injuries. It is important that you get the stinger out right away before an infection has time to set in. This will also help to minimize any pain that your dog may be in. If you have to, restrain your dog and then use the tweezers in the first aid kit to pull out the stinger. You can then wash the area with some luke warm water and baking soda. This can help to take some of the nasty stinging away and easy the pain suffered by your dog. Ice and Benadryl will also help to keep the pain and swelling to a minimum, just make sure that you ask the vet just how much Benadryl is enough for your dog. Just like kids it is important that dogs get the right dosage when they take medications.

Never rush an injured animal. While it may be your instinct to run over and start taking care of the injury, this may spook your dog and scared animals can get a little upset. You do not want to end up with an injury as well, do you? Of course not, so take your time and let the animal know that you want to help not harm.
With the cold weather here, its time for the warm clothes to come out and the fall /winter fashion lines. Definitely the case with pet fashion as well. Dog coats, sweaters, and even scarves and boots are hot commodities.

If you're looking for the hipper cooler trends in the dog fashion world you can't beat Hip Doggie. They're always a dog fashion leader and this year's fall winter line is no exception. Lots of cool new looks for the coolest canines.

A hot fashion pick for fall this year is the dog hoodie. Hoodies are a great way to stay warm in the winter for you and your little dog. Our Shih Tzu Suzy loves her hoodies in the wintertime . They're soft and comfortable and the hood keeps her ears warm.

Hoodies are a Hip Doggie staple and this year's new fall/winter selections have never been better. There's a great selection of styles, colors and cuteness. Suzy's favorites include the Snow Bunny Sweater, Chuck-T Dog Hoodie, and the Super Soft Love Dog Hoodie.

Lets start with a winter favorite, the Hip Doggie Snow Bunny Sweater. The hooded dog sweater is warm and cuddly enough to keep any little dog warm in winter. Woven textured material and thick fur trim around the sleeves and hood see to that. The knit floral fabric design is gorgeous and the soft white fur trim is made for winter weather.

Our Shih Tzu Suzy loves hers. She digs it out whenever we get snow, unfortunately for her that's not often in Atlanta. She's still barking about our next ski trip. Hip Doggie also offers a brown knit hooded sweater with a bit of a stronger pattern that's perfect for the male dogs out there.

Next up is Hip Doggie's Super Soft Love Hoodie. This dog hoodie is definitely for the cute and cuddly puppies out there. Pink with black strips and a cute as a button love insignia. It's even reversible to black with pink stitch for those days you want something a little different

Then there's the material, soft as cashmere, what more could a little dog want? We try not to ask our little dog that unless we have a lot of time to spend. She definitely loves this hoodie though. Its like a favorite sweatsuit. Perfect for lounging around the house, walking around the block, and playing with her favorite Frisbee.

Last up is Hip Doggie's chic Chuckie T Hoodie. This dog hoodie is for the sporty dogs out there. Great for the fall season the hot orange color is great for those night time walks. A pompom hood add to the cuteness factor and the cool runner insignia gives the jacket a definite hip factor. Not a top for a shy dog I wouldn't think. Fortunately Suzy doesn't have that problem. She's actually asking for matching neon sneakers now, but that's for another article.

Hip Doggie's fall/winter line has lots for the non hoodie lovers also. Items like the Bite me Dog Turtleneck will keep your dog warm without a hood and the cute sophisticated Audrey dog coat is a great fashion pick. So hoodies or not, this fall/winter season "Hip" is definitely the way to go. <bio>Gerald Cormier is the owner of The Shih Tzu Store http://www.theshihtzustore.com.
The cold winter months are fast approaching, if it hasn't arrived already. Winter is the season for fun, family, the holidays, and cold weather. If you live in an area that has snow and ice, here are a few tips for caring for your pet during the cold winter months.

First, protection for you pet's precious paws is essential. The cold and hard ground, particularly when snow or ice is present can cause your pet's paws to become sore and cracked; sometimes, it can even cause their paws to bleed. There are several things you can do to help protect your pet's paws. Oftentimes, the best option is to purchase puppy boots. These boots are made of water-resistant fabric on the exterior, and they usually have warm material such as fleece or flannel lining on the inside. They usually sport elastic cuffs around the top and Velcro underneath to ensure they stay on.

If your pet does not take to wearing booties, there is another option: grooming your pet's paws. When it is particularly snowy outside, the ice and snow can easily cling to the hair between your pet's paws and on their paw pads and 'ankles'. Simply trim the hair to keep it short, this way they snow and ice will have nothing to hold on to. Also, keep your pet's toenails trimmed short (but not too short). This can help prevent your pup's paws from soreness. Finally, gently rub petroleum jelly on your puppy's paw pads before and after they go outside. Doing this protects their paws from cracking and bleeding by providing a film of protective gel over the paws.

Winter nights are cold, especially if you like to keep your house somewhat cool, even in the winter season. Secondly, to help your pup remain warm and comfy at night, there are a few things you may want to consider. If your pet does not have a doggie bed, you may want to get one for your pooch this holiday season. Doggie beds are built so your pet can snuggle warmly at night in their soft fabric bed. You can also buy your pet a throw or a fleece blanket. When you put your dog to bed at night, simply toss the blanket or throw over their body, and it will help keep them warm.

Another option to purchase puppy pajamas. It may sound silly, but flannel pajamas for dog's can really help keep them insulated and warm. Also, if your dog tends to shed, this is a great option, because it contains the shed hair within the garment until you wash it. This is great because then you won't have pet hair all over your couch, on your bed, or other warm places in your house that you don't want covered in pet hair.

Help keep your pet warm and protected from the winter elements this holiday season. Consider purchasing winter wear such as water-resistant booties, puppy pajamas, or even a coat or jacket. A doggie bed and pet throw or blanket can also go a long way. Remember, investing in your pet's comfort is investing in your pet's happiness. It is well worth the cost! <bio>http://www.dog-fence.org </bio>

Want to know how to stimulate your dog's mind?

Play games with your dog.

I've written before about different games to play that will help keep your dog from getting bored and help to stimulate his mind. Here's another great game to play:

The Shell Game.

Here's what you'll need:

- Three small, identical buckets approximately one gallon size. Or, you can use empty coffee cans if you like.

- Kibble or doggie cookies.

- A leash and training collar.

- One hungry puppy.

Here's what you do:

Place your dog in a down-stay, in the kitchen.

- If you don't know how to teach your dog to lay down and STAY DOWN until you tell him to get up, take a look at this: http://www.dogproblems.com/downstay.htm

Next, walk into your living room and place the three buckets side-by-side, with the mouth on the ground (upside down). Leave about one foot of space between each bucket.

Put a doggie-cookie under one of the buckets.

Now, return to your dog, give him your andquot;releaseandquot; command, and walk him over to the buckets.

Say, andquot;Where's the cookie?andquot;

Encourage your dog to smell the buckets. When he gets excited about the bucket with the cookie under it, praise him lavishly. Then, kick the bucket over and let him get the cookie.

Repeat this process by switching the bucket the cookie is hidden under.

Once your dog starts to get the hang of the game, you can add more complexity by spacing the buckets further apart. You may also add more buckets.

I like to teach a dog to give an active indication when he finds the bucket with the cookie... such as scratching the side of the bucket, or barking. You can also teach your dog to andquot;Sitandquot; next to the bucket with the cookie.

Initially you'll find that your dog will likely go back to the previous bucket that hid the cookie. Don't lift the bucket up until he finds the one that actually contains the cookie.

That's all for now, folks! Adam <bio>Adam G.
Your dog is not just a pet. Your dog is not just an animal. Your dog is a bona FIDO member of the family!! So of course your dog needs to dress the part -- right?

Well thanks to the internet and the many online boutiques you can dress your dog for every occasion from the comfort of your own home. No more "granny' knitted sweaters for your sophisticated canine!! But is dressing up your dog just something that you like to do? Is there any benefit to your dog? It all depends on why you bought the clothes!!

A Dog Coat can be a very useful item of clothing for your dog. It can keep him warm in the cold weather, dry in the wet weather and can protect him from infections in the same way that our clothes protect us. It can also keep him clean which may be especially useful after a romp in the park on a wet winter's day. Just take the coat off after it's dirty and keep most of the dirt contained. Then you can let your clean(ish) dog into the car which helps keep the car cleaner. Dog coats come in many different styles and colors so pick the coat that's most appropriate for its use. And of course what dog would be seen out without the matching doggie hat??

Just like people wear, you can get 'designer' labels for your dog to make him feel like a million dollars, (and it probably costs that too). Many celebrities always have their dogs dressed in the latest doggie fashion. A practice that Paris Hilton with Tinkerbell has raised to an art form, or so it seems!

Apart from coats and sweaters other useful dog clothing items include dog t-shirts and dog sunglasses. These can look cute but they do also serve to help protect your pet. The sunglasses can protect him from UVA and UVB rays and the t-shirt helps protect his skin. Dogs can develop skin cancer the same way that people can and this is one of the main cancers in dogs. And you thought it was just to make Fido look cute!!

As you can see, getting clothing for your dog is not just vanity on your part, although it is fun dressing up your dog. It can also play a vital role in keeping your dog healthy and happy. And if you do get the urge to step out on the wild side -- get your dog some formal wear or a great costume for Halloween -- go on have fun and buy your dog some great clothing today!! <bio>David Amos is a long time dog owner and dog lover.
They've been spotted everywhere, the streets of Hollywood, the beaches of Miami and the hotels of New York and London. Have you noticed the global spurt of celebrities' fascination (or possibly obsession?) with Chihuahuas? At first it was thought to simply be a phase; either it's a short phase, or the Chihuahuadom in Hollywood has begun for the long haul.

Who own these dogs? The list is endless, but here are some of the celebrity biggies: Paris Hilton's Chihuahua, Tinkerbell; Britney Spear's Bit Bit and Lucky; Hilary' Duff's Lola; Scarlett Johansson's Maggie; Sandra Bullock's Chihuahua mix Poppy; and Demi Moore's Yorkie-Chihuahua mix, Louie.

Why do Chihuahuas appeal to celebrities? First, Chihuahuas are normally 6-9 inches in height and 2-6 lbs in weight. This equals a teeny tiny full grown pup. Because celebrities are always on the move, they have a perfectly portable pet in a Chihuahua, they can easily be taken nearly anywhere: the spa, the film set, a private airplane, a shopping spree, a sporting event=85you name it. Also, celebrities seem to love buying accessories and items for their precious pooches: carrying bags, jeweled (yes, jeweled) personal collars, doggie sweaters and outfits, custom made leashes, etc. Celebrities have money to spend; why not diffuse cash on their peppy companion?

These dogs have not only grown in popularity because they are owned by celebrities; they now stand on their own four feet. Consider Paris Hilton's Tinkerbell, who seemed to have been the groundbreaking pup which was first in the Chihuahua trend. Tinkerbell even has her own doggie diary that is titled "The Tinkerbell Hilton Diaries: My Life Tailing Paris Hilton" by Tinkerbell Hilton. A doggie author? This book is 112 pages full of Tinkerbell's first-person (or is it first-canine?) thoughts as she trails Paris around the world.

Are these celebrity pooches only as popular as their owners, or can they exceed the fame of their mommies? Britney Spear's pup, Bit Bit, is only popular because of the struggle between Britney and Kevin; Kevin thought that Britney's Bit Bit might be harmful to their children. Britney agreed to get rid of Lucky after she snapped at Kevin one day in May, but Bit Bit remained. Are Chihuahuas aggressive pups?

Chihuahua's are known for their extreme loyalty to their owners. They are loving pets who demand attention from their owners, yet they freely give it as well. They are wary of dogs other than Chihuahuas, primarily because they are tiny and sometimes are easily scared. If a Chihuahua is well-socialized, they are happy to be dotted upon and passed around from person to person. They are not recommended for children because Chihuahuas are naturally nervous and edgy dogs, and the teasing actions of a child may cause them to become afraid and nip with their sharp teeth. Chihuahuas are energetic, dotting, and saucy pets; they know what they want, and they plan to get it. Compare their temperament to that of a celebrity; there seem to be a few similarities. Is the primary appeal to a celebrity of owning a Chihuahua because they can keep up with the fast and famous lifestyle? Quite possibly. <bio>http://www.dog-bed.org/ http://www.lveproductions.com/ </bio>

Before you set out on a trip with your dog, you should gather all the information you can about possible hotels, motels, or bed and breakfasts at your destination. Currently there are 65 million dog owners in the US and approximately 19% take their pets with them when they travel. According to AAA, more than 13,000 hotels nationwide are now pet friendly.

Some hotels require the owner to sign an agreement to pay for any damage that the dog may do, while others require a refundable damage deposit. The larger hotel chains won't charge extra for the pets stay, while others charge $10.00 to $50.00 extra per pet per day, so it pays to shop around. Most of the hotels surveyed prefer smaller dogs, (less than 30 pounds), but many have no weight limit, so again, do your homework before you go.

The list of amenities for pets is growing, especially in the larger hotel chains. A short list includes, "doggie daycare", walking services, pet play areas, grooming services including "pawdicures", and even special pet menus that include foods prepared by the hotels chef, served in a special doggie bowl, placemat, bottled water, and a complimentary chew toy.

You can do much to make your dog popular with the management. Inquire at the time you register where you can take him for a walk and all pet policies that apply. The following tips can make the difference between being invited back and being asked to leave:

-Be respectful toward other guests and always keep your pet on a leash when you leave your hotel room -Keep identification on your pet, and some hotels require proof of vaccinations. -After walking your pet always clean up after him -Keep your pet contained in the bathroom or in a crate if he is left alone in the room -Always take your pets personal items such as his food bowl, chew toys, bed or blanket to help him in strange surroundings -Avoid messes on the carpet by having your pet eat in the bathroom

Most dogs are excellent travelers, better behaved than some children. The strange environments and experiences will make your pet feel more dependent on you. He will stick closer to you and obey you more promptly than he does at home. So the responsibility for his good behavior rests on your shoulders. You will have no problems if you simply anticipate your dog's needs and provide for them. <bio>Randy Jones and his partner Brent Jones have been in the pet industry for a long time.
Taking your pet with you on a car trip may be a hassling and harrowing experience. Here is a list of 5 items that help lighten the traveling load for both you and your pet when on the road. These items are listed in no particular order:

1. Pet Net Barrier

This is ideal when traveling with a larger dog. Many people will take out the back seat of their SUV or van and set up this easy net barrier. The net utilizes micro-mesh material that allows for clear visibility for checking up on your doggie in back; it is commonly recommended over metal barriers. It is also easy to set up: it contains wiring that snaps open and shut and stays put on the road. It also has adjustable side panels that allow it to fit in virtually any vehicle; it also securely connects to the inside of the car with fasteners.

2. Backseat Hammock

This is an easy and comfortable option for a seat cover when traveling with your pet. This backseat hammock attaches to the backs of the two front seats and then slings and attaches to the top of the back seat. This keeps you car clean from your shedding pet, as well as keeping your dog safe from jumping into the front seat.

3. Car Seats for Smaller Dogs

There are many different varieties of car seats for dogs, and most attach to the seat by using a seatbelt. The primary reason for doggie car seats is that it is a safe and comfortable option for your traveling pet. Some car seats are raised to aide in pet visibility to and help avoid carsickness. And hey, what pet doesn't like a comfortable throne to sit on?

4. Portable Pet Ramps

Pet ramps are an excellent idea for small or elderly pets who are unable to get in and out of the vehicle on their own. Most ramps hook securely onto the back bumper of your car. A folding ramp is highly recommended because it does not take up much space; some fold up and are about the size of a briefcase. Be certain to get a ramp that has some kind of traction for sure footing, as well as a little edge on the sides to ensure the safety of your pet.

5. Travel Food and Water Dishes

An important thing to remember when traveling with Fido is he needs food and water to stay hydrated. This can sometimes be difficult in the car, and it is easy to spill. Travel dog bowls with funnel lids are helpful because the design allows for your pet to access his food with relative ease, and you don't have to worry about food spilling everywhere.

Travel water dishes are also designed for the easiest distribution of water without the spills. You will normally see these water bowls being used on boats and in RV's, but they are also excellent for automobile use. These water bowls are designed to keep the water level in the basin to avoid spills and splashes, so your pet can stay properly hydrated for the trip. <bio>http://www.discount-pet-mall.com </bio>

In my newly released book, YOU CAN LEARN SPANISH or Any Language No Matter Your Age or Disposition, I discuss how most, if not all, second language courses in the Free World are taught: Grammar First. Not only is this method frighteningly boring, but I also explain why it will not--indeed cannot--give you what you want: A high degree of spoken fluency. I recall all too well walking into my first Spanish course at the University of Kansas. I was handed a huge textbook, a workbook, and was told I had to login so many hours each week in the language lab. Now, instead of a language lab, you just get some CD's or tapes.

The reason this approach cannot teach you a high degree of spoken fluency is simple. It is so simple that all of you who raised children already know it. This approach is not the way humans acquire spoken fluency in any language, including their native one. The same way in which you, the parent, coached your child to say words, phrases, and sentences, is the way in which a second language is learned. The mechanisms your child used to learn his native tongue are the same ones you need to acquire a second language. It does not matter at what age you begin to develop a high degree of spoken fluency in a second language.

Does this mean someone who wants to become bilingual should ignore grammar? Absolutely not! What this does mean is that one comes before the other. The horse pulls the cart. It is not the other way around. The horse is spoken fluency and the cart is the study of formal grammar. The logic of what I am saying should not escape anyone.

In my book, I reviewed and suggested two commercially available products that closely simulate the process in which you learned your native language. In the book, I explain the science behind second-language acquisition. Without rewriting the book in this article, let me mention the natural process of acquiring language is to engage in intensive input first.

This means a period of time in which the learner just listens to meaningful input in the target language. This is what children do. It is called, "the period of silence." Before children begin to speak, they listen intensely to what is being said to them and especially to things that interest them.

>From his stroller in the park, the child sees a dog. For the first time, he thrusts out his hands at what he sees and makes all manner of grunts, groans, screeches, and spewing saliva. The caregiver instinctively says something like, "That's a doggie. Do you see the doggie? Can you say doggie?" And until the child begins to use that word, the caregiver goes through the same routine each time the child sees a dog.

The child is listening. The child sees the object in front of him. The object provides the mighty stimulation. The child makes an association between what he hears and sees. When he sees a picture of a dog in a picture book as the caregiver tells a story, the process begins again.

Very simply, this is how language, or I should say spoken fluency, is acquired. You did not enroll your child in an English course with books and tapes so he could learn his native language. He developed a degree of spoken fluency long before a formal study of his native language began. And, hundreds of thousands of people who have tried using the grammar-first approach would kill for that level of fluency.

Grammar first will give you the skills to exegete written text and that is about all. Is that what you want?

Input, input, input is what you want first and foremost. Total Immersion means meaningful input before output is attempted. The process of need, picture, sound, and association is taking place in meaningful input. The child shows you by his slobbery enthusiasm that he needs to know what the animal in the picture is. You sound out the word dog and the child makes the association. You go through this repeatedly until the child is able to make the sound himself.

One day, the magic of language occurs and the child begins to speak.

The two commercially available products I mention in the book are The Learnables and The Pimsleur Language System. The Learnables provide the meaningful input, and lots of it, before you attempt any output. The Pimsleur products provide a channel to begin your output--beginning to speak. <bio>YOU CAN LEARN SPANISH or Any Language No Matter Your Age or Disposition(Paperback)by Doug, Bower (Author) http://www.zyworld.com/theolog/Page2.htm </bio>

The idea of potty training a puppy may seem more than a little daunting with all the information available today. Fact is though that it's not hard if you have the right tools and methods. Below are a few tips that will start you on this adventure of interacting and teaching your new best friend how to behave. If you want your puppy to be happy, you need to realize that they need to be able to spend time indoors with you. Most dogs prefer to enjoy interacting and being with their human family and not living alone outdoors.

WHAT IS HOUSETRAINING? House training is teaching your puppy not to use your house as their personal bathroom.

Contrary to some pet owners, proper crate training methods are not cruel or unkind to your pet. Being kept outside for years because you didn't teach them that using your living room as a bathroom was not ok is truly cruel to a social animal like a puppy. Here are a number of Important Tips for Successful potty training a puppy

TIP #1 Never Scold or Punish your puppy. Dogs have few cognitive reasoning skills, if any. This means that hitting or yelling at your puppy will most likely result in confusion for your pet and not correction. So even if you are frustrated, don't ever hit, smack, or abuse your pet either physically or verbally.

TIP#2 OK, next tip is to be consistent in your house breaking efforts. Take your puppy outside immediately after a feeding. Don't wait for them to have an accident. The majority of puppies also cannot hold their water with a full tummy. A full stomach pushes on the bladder.

By taking them out at regular times, you lower the possibility of accidents. You also gain the opportunity to give your pup praise when they go the bathroom outside where you want them to go.

TIP#3 Speaking of consistency, use only one word to mean one thing. Don't use Bathroom one time, then potty the next. Your pet has enough trouble figuring out what you want without having you use different words that mean the same.

TIP#4 Watch your pet when inside your home. Penning your puppy isn't the same as house breaking.

Your puppy needs to be confined to their crate whenever you cannot actively watch them. It only takes a few seconds for an accident to happen so you need keep a watchful eye to limit accidents.

The biggest problem with potty training a puppy is the need to remain consistent. The idea of moving a dog crate from the living room to the bedroom at night can be a chore. The answer to this problem is a portable doggie crate available only from the site below. Find out more about these affordable - portable dog crates used to quickly house train your puppy

If you are serious about successfully house breaking your Dog, you need a lightweight, portable and easy to use doggie crate.
In this article, I will give you tips on agility training your puppy.

Agility training is actually preparation for a doggie sport that started in the late 1970's to fill in some time between some events in a dog competition. In dog agility competitions, dog handlers are given a specific amount of time to direct their dog through an obstacle course. The dogs are not on a leash and they may find a number of different courses to navigate through like jumps, see-saws, weave poles and tunnels. Patterned after equestrian events, dog agility has evolved from the doggie equivalent of a half-time show to an event in its own right.

If you plan to adopt an active dog into your family, you might want to consider agility training for him. Dog agility is a sport, but you do not have to plan to compete in order to get your puppy involved in it. It is perfect for a dog breed that is known to be restless or bored easily. In addition, it is also good for dogs that need more exercise and discipline. However, one of the caveats is that you should have a good bond with your puppy. Because agility training can be quite involved, you will be spending a lot of time with him!

You can start puppies as young as four or five months old on agility training. Of course, they are still growing into their feet so they may not seem that nimble! With puppies, you will be playing a lot (at least it will seem that way) but they are learning. Your puppy will not start with any stressful exercises; in other words, he will not be walking across any tall obstacle courses and perform jumps. Their obstacles are just a few inches off the ground so they don't get hurt, yet the principles are the same as for older dogs.

Puppies will be able to train on the tunnels and weave poles however. Trainers usually push balls and other toys through the tunnels as an incentive. In addition, puppies are given special sticks to carry in their mouths as they weave through the poles. They soon learn about spacing and how to not bump into each pole so that they can get through the course.

The key to agility training for puppies is short sessions. They have short attention spans and keeping them in long sessions is just setting them up for failure. Rewards are used a lot as well as plenty of praise, hugs and love. The great thing is that puppies, once they master a course, are so excited! Agility training also works wonders for the shier puppies that need more socialization skills.

As dogs grow older, the agility training sessions become more advanced. In addition, they go through more exercises and conditioning as well. You will find that you will need to pay more attention to your dog's diet as well because the more active he is, the more nutrients he needs.

You can have your dog compete in various agility events if that is your ultimate goal. However, your dog gets a lot more out of the agility training because he is spending time with you. As a result, he is more devoted to you and an outstanding member of your family. The added plus to all of this is if he is normally a dog breed that is overly active and mischievous, the agility training will tone that down quite a bit. <bio>Carol Sommers is a professional puppy trainer that has been training puppy's for over 7 years now.
We all know that brushing and flossing is a must if we want to keep all our teeth in our old age. Of course we want to take good care of our teeth and mouths because we desire pearly white teeth that are aesthetically appealing. However, we realize the importance of dental hygiene; we need to take care of our teeth so we don't succumb to disease that could have been prevented by simply brushing and flossing multiple times each day.

So, what about our dogs? They have teeth too, and they need dental care just like us. Though they don't mind if their teeth aren't the perfect shade of white, they probably do care if their mouth is poorly taken care of and if they suffer later on in life as a result from lack of attention. Like humans, dogs can have plaque, cavities, gingivitis, and tartar. Though you can take your pet to the local groomer to get their teeth cleaned, you can do it at home. Here's how to take care of your pet's teeth easily and effectively.

The best way to prevent periodontal disease and inflammation is by daily brushing your dog's teeth. Of course, you will want to begin slowly and entice your dog with treats and praise to encourage him or her to allow you to brush their teeth. This takes time, and effort, but it is well worth it.

When you brush your dog's teeth, you will most likely want to use a finger toothbrush or a simple kid-sized toothbrush. These are gentle, yet they allow the tartar and plaque to loosen up on the teeth and be flushed out. Also, you will need to make sure you use special doggie toothpaste. You can either get this at your personal veterinary office or at your local pet supply store. When you apply the toothpaste to the toothbrush, be sure to get the paste deep into the brush; if it just sits on top it will quickly come off in your pet's mouth and be ineffective. Be sure to brush your dog's teeth at a 45-degree angle, because this helps ensure that every tooth gets properly cleaned, and this makes it more comfortable for you as well.

Other ways that you can help your pet remain in good oral health is to feed them dry food instead of wet food. The crunchy chow works to gently scrub teeth as the food is chewed. Also, there are many, many special treat products available that claim to help clean teeth; though these do help, they certainly are not as effective as actually brushing each day. Chew toys are another way to help keep up good dental health. Chew toys with rubber prongs or ones that are textured certainly help gently rub off plaque from the teeth and are good choices for your pet's oral health.

Just like humans, dental health is important to dogs. Dogs can suffer from periodontal disease, gingivitis, tartar and plaque. There are doggie toothbrushes, toothpaste, chew toys, food, and treats that help keep your pet's mouth happy and healthy. Help your dog, and keep their mouth and teeth squeaky clean! the biting! <bio> http://www.pet-super-store.com/html/Category-23-0.html http://www.pet-super-store.com/html/Category-5-0.html </bio>

The first year of owning a pet means more veterinary check-ups than usual. However, once you get past the first year of your pet's life, you will most likely only need to visit the vet for annual check-ups. This article contains a few tips for taking your pet out to their first annual vet check-up visit. Here's what to expect:

Most veterinarians will do the "nose to tail" exam; this simply means that they will start the examination at the nose and end with the tail. This is just a way that helps them stay methodical so they can perform a completely thorough examination.

So, first, we have the nose. Your vet will be looking for a nasal discharge; though this can just be a sign of a doggie cold, it could also mean symptoms of a more serious illness, such as Canine Distemper or a respiratory infection, just to name two.

Next, your vet will move on to the eyes. They will look to see if your pet's eyes are alert and full of life; dull or lethargic eyes can be a warning sign of parasites or various illnesses. Eye infections will cause a discharge or an "oozing," so a vet will look for these as well.

From the eyes your vet will go to the ears. Believe it or not, sometimes that doggie smell comes from your pet's ears! Ears are a good place to harbor various bacteria and infections. Keeping your pet's ears clean should be a vital part of your weekly grooming.

Next on down the line is the mouth. Your vet will basically look to see if your pet has good dental health: minimal plaque, no signs of gingivitis or periodontal disease. Your vet will also examine any cuts, lumps, or bruises that may be present.

Once the head examination is complete, your vet will move to the chest. Here they will listen to your pet's lungs for coughing, congestion, or any breathing difficulty or abnormality. Congestion or abnormality in breathing could very likely be the cause of many different illness or infections, so your vet will listen very carefully to your pet's breathing.

Next on the list is the heart. Just like humans, the heart is the most important organ for dogs. Your vet will take out their stethoscope and listen to your pet's heart as they make sure the beat is healthy and the heart rate is normal.

The skin and coat examination is important in the exam process. Your vet will check for any unusual cuts, scrapes, bruises, lumps, swelling, a thinning of the coat, and of course: fleas and ticks.

The Abdomen is the second to last stop on the examination train. Your vet will lightly press on your pet's abdomen area to feel for any sensitivity, lumps, or abnormal distending.

The spine and tail are the last check-ups on the exam. Your vet will feel along your pet's spine, make sure it is healthy and in-line. Your vet will then do the same with the tail and legs, looking for anything unusual.

Though having an annual vet check-up is different from a vaccination visit, there is usually no cause for worry. You have picked you vet because you trust them. Your pet is in their hands, and if you take your pet to annual vet check-ups, it will help your pet stay healthy and live a longer, fuller life! <bio> http://www.pet-super-store.com/html/Category-23-0.html http://www.pet-super-store.com/html/Category-5-0.html </bio>

Knowing the tricks of getting your fur pal to enjoy brushing makes it easy, fun, and quick!

Here are some proven steps to ensure a pooch with a positive attitude about tooth brushing. A positive attitude translates to happy cooperation at tooth brushing time each day.

For more great tips on caring for your dog, please visit <a href="http://bichonworld.com/bichon-dog-articles.html" >http://bichonworld.com/bichon-dog-articles.html

First, select a canine toothpaste. Your vet may have a recommendation. (Remember, dogs won't gargle or spit the toothpaste out like us, so their tooth cleaners must be safe to swallow). Thankfully, the doggie toothpastes come in palatable flavors. Since Bichon breeds may be andquot;more selectiveandquot; than many others, be ready to try more than one flavor!

Begin by letting your dog taste a little toothpaste from your finger. It is essential to discover a toothpaste flavor that your little one likes!

When you've found a flavor andquot;of choice, andquot; call your buddy and use a lick of toothpaste from your finger as a reward. Do this several times for a couple of days.

Next, let your doggie lick the toothpaste from a toothbrush. (Studies show that a brush is more effective than a andquot;finger-cotandquot; for cleaning a dog's teeth). andquot;Humanandquot; toothbrushes work great, are cost effective, and the handles provide excellent leverage. andquot;Softandquot; bristles are recommended. Although Bichon mouths are small, it is very easy to scissor the bristles to create the ideal brush size.

During this period, practice placing your pooch on a counter where you'll be brushing teeth. Hand-feed tasty treats so that being on the counter is fun. (For secure footing use a rubber-backed mat on the counter).

Progress to andquot;playingandquot; tooth-peek-a-boo. Quickly and gently raise the lip to reveal a tooth, praise and treat.

Once this is happily accomplished, add a quick, light tooth-touch with your finger. Praise and treat.

Progress to touching teeth on both sides of the mouth before giving a treat.

Next, add a lick of toothpaste from the brush to the chain of events on the counter.

Once this is easily accomplished, play tooth-peek-a-boo on 1 tooth using the toothbrush with a little toothpaste.

When you can touch several teeth with the brush, it's time to begin an actual brushing procedure. Imagine dividing the mouth into 4 sections: front left, front right, back left, and back right. Do one quick, light andquot;swipeandquot; in each of the 4 sections. Gradually add a andquot;swipeandquot; each day until you can brush each section at least 6 - 10 times.

Once your little buddy is completely happy with brushing, he'll probably begin to gnaw at the brush while you're cleaning the back teeth. This actually assists with the cleaning process, but it shortens the life of the toothbrush. Just trim the bent bristles off with scissors to stretch the effective life of the toothbrush. (Consider making toothbrush purchases at places like andquot; The Dollar Storeandquot; so that you can replace them easily and cheaply.)

>From start to finish, tooth brushing should take less than 2 minutes. Isn't that a tiny price to pay for the health benefits that result!?! <bio>Sandy Schneider, author, is a devoted dog mom.
Is that your excuse for not eating healthy and losing those extra pounds you've packed on? Do you think that eating healthy means you have to spend all day Sunday in your kitchen prepping fresh vegetables and putting them in single serve baggies so you have food to eat the rest of the week?

While I agree you could easily spend half a day in the kitchen cutting up fresh vegetables for the entire week if you wanted to, there are other options that aren't such a drain on your time.

First of all, while fresh fruits and vegetables are great foods to have handy while dieting, the salad bar at your local grocery store has them already cut up for you which will save you time. Even if your grocery store doesn't have a salad bar, they usually have precut fresh vegetables in their produce section or deli that will save you time. My favorite ready to go fresh vegetable are those already peeled baby carrots in one pound bags.

Second of all, there are lots of fresh fruits that don't need any more prep than a good washing. Apples are a perfect example. They are easy to transport and are delicious.

I also don't think it takes any longer to cook a healthy meal than it does to cook an unhealthy one. It only takes a few minutes to broil or grill a piece of fish. Fish is nature's fast food. While the fish is grilling, reach into the freezer for some frozen vegetables to steam and you have a very healthy meal in minutes. There are also healthy frozen meals available in the freezer section of your store.

You can also order healthy take out food that is diet friendly in the same amount of time you can order a pizza with the works. Order some Chinese but skip the calorie laden General Tso's chicken and fried rice. Instead choose something much healthier and lower calorie like beef with broccoli, shrimp with garlic sauce, or teriyaki chicken.

Going to a restaurant doesn't have to be forbidden while dieting either. Dieting and losing weight doesn't have to be a gloomy and horrible time of your life. Instead of sitting at home feeling sorry for yourself and thinking about everything you shouldn't eat, go out to a restaurant with family or friends, make healthy choices, and really enjoy yourself and your food.

The best strategy is to know what you are going to have before you go to the restaurant. Then you will be less tempted to order something you shouldn't or to be overwhelmed by the menu choices. If the restaurant has their menu online, look it up and pick out your food beforehand. If it's not possible, keep your choices simple, avoiding most sauces and extras because those are typically loaded with calories.

You are probably aware that the serving sizes in most restaurants are huge. Either ask for a doggie bag right when you order and put half your food in that doggie bag or split a meal with someone else. I do this when I'm going to go out and have something I'm been craving but isn't that great for my diet.

Most of the time I order seafood or a lean steak; skip the bread; have a sweet potato (without the marshmallows and brown sugar) on the side or vegetables on the side; drink water or a diet soft drink; and then split a dessert with everyone at the table so that I can have a couple of bites of something sweet.

Having healthy snacks while dieting doesn't have to be time-consuming either. You can buy nuts, those precut vegetables mentioned earlier, snack size servings of fresh cheese, and individual serving size cups of yogurt. It also only takes a few minutes to take a box of healthy cereal and put it in plastic bags for munching on when you have a craving for something crunchy.

If you want to eat healthier and lose weight you can do it even if you don't have a lot of time to cook or prep food. If you have the determination to do it, you can. <bio>Dorrie Ruplinger is a featured writer for http://www.LoseWeightForChristmas.com. Whether you have an inside or an outside pooch, a trainer will be able to help you. When you speak to your trainer about training your dog, be sure and let him know just exactly what the bad habits are your dog has, that need breaking. Tell your trainer your dog is uncontrollable when you take him for a walk, and that he is overbearing in a welcoming sort of way, to guest that visit your home. Do not forget to tell them about the bathroom accidents either. Do not worry, your trainer will not think of you as a bad pet owner, but rather as one that needs help. That is what trainers are for, to help.

Having your dog trained will make you and him happier. As well as your guest that are frequently jumped on and greeted with an innocent sloppy wet tongue. Once your dog has had a training session with the dog trainer, the trainer will tell you about the new commands and things your dog has learned. Hopefully you can find a trainer that works with you and your dog once he is trained. Ensuring that you know what commands are for what, and when he deserves a doggie treat.

Where are you going to find a dog trainer? Ask around at the veterinarian's office when you take your dog in for check up. Notice the well behaved dogs, and be sure to ask their owners if they used a trainer and how you can contact them.
I highly recommend this dog treat for all dogs, but especially for dogs that suffer with allergy problems.

After learning that my Westie Rose had several allergies, it had me checking all of her dry dog food, and goodies for the forbidden ingredients. She ended up being allergic to some of the most common ingredient in dry pet food, ingredients such as, beef, rice, corn, flax, milk, soy, white potato, and corn. As you can see from this list, it was not going to be easy to find a food that would be void of these popular ingredients. I had my work cut out for me?

It took a bit of work, and research to find a dry food Rose could eat, without aggravating her allergies. I finely found a dry dog food that would suit Rose's dietary needs.

The dog food is a fish and sweet potato formula made by California Choice. She loves it, and it is void of all the additives she is allergic to.

I wasn't having as much luck finding goodies that Rose would not turn her nose up at... Yes Rose is a bit spoiled, as you most likely have realized by now? Well---I found a Doggie Bakery that could develop a custom treat for Rose. After the baker quoted a price per pound for these personalized treats, I decided quickly that this was not an affordable option for Rose's dilemma.

I got to thinking; Rose loves people cookies, and begs with good vigor whenever one is in her vicinity. Perhaps I could whip up a wonderful, healthy treat for her myself.

I wanted to make a treat that would be not only healthy, but tasty. It also needed to be hard and crunchy. The consistencies that Rose was accustomed to, and would help keep her teeth clean. It didn't take but a moment before one cookie came to mind, Biscotti! Yes Biscotti, let's face it a stale Biscotti is so hard it could well be considered in the same class as a dog biscuit.

I developed the recipe with care. Adding ingredients that would provide Rose with not only a wonderful tasting treat, but would supply her with all the daily nutrients, protein, fiber, and vitamins she required, to sustain good dog health. After some lengthy research I came up with the major food ingredients I wanted to include in the Biscotti. Each ingredient was chosen not only to provide great taste, but also to provide good nutrition. Below is the recipe for my special healthy Dog Biscotti, I hope your dog enjoys this taste treat!

Rose's Banana Biscotti

4 cups flour

1 cup oatmeal (ground fine)

1/4 cup olive oil or vegetable oil

1 egg

1 1/2 cup pureed banana

3 Tablespoons brown sugar

1/3 cups well chopped peanuts

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

2 teaspoons vanilla

You may need small amount of water.

Preheat oven to 325. Add all dry ingredients to large bowl, form a well with dry ingredients. Blend oil, banana, and egg with blender or food processor. Add a bit into well, start to incorporate wet with dry ingredients. Adding a small amount until all is mixed. Ay this time you may have to add a small amount of water. Add 1 teaspoon at a time. Knead with your hands until you have a soft none sticky dough.

Form dough into a log, approximately 2 inches wide by 2 inches high. Now flatten the log, until it is approximately 6 inches wide and 1 inch high.

Place log into a non-stick baking sheet that has been lightly greased. Place in oven, bake for 30-40 minutes. Remove from oven, cool for 10 minutes. With a sharp knife cut across the log in inch pieces. (If your dog is a small breed cut Biscotti once more in the middle, making two cookies, instead of the larger 1 cookie).

Place all cookies back on baking sheet, bake at 325 for 20 minutes. Let the Biscotti air cool for 2 hours. Store some in an air tight container, freeze some for future needs.

Rose's Biscotti are packed full of nutrients, fiber, protein, Vitamins, and Carbohydrates, along with Omega 6 fatty acids and loads of trace elements.

Last but not least, Rose loves her nightly treat... <bio>For more information about feeding your dog, please visit the following url: http://www.oldandsold.com/articles02/dogs3.shtml </bio>
