I'm sure that most of you would agree that in today's world, where we have to rush from one situation to the other, getting a properly balanced diet is somewhat impossible, and often beyond the scope of our capabilities. This can be due to many things, like insufficient time to cook a meal, insufficient restaurants around to even pop out and eat a good meal, or you're tied down to your desk, or a multitude of other equally good reasons. If you think about it however, I'm also sure that you would agree that this is probably the leading cause for the poor digestion suffered by many people around the world today.

Bloating, constipation, and gas are a few of the more common symptoms of poor digestion. Abdominal cramping, chronic fatigue, premature aging, joint and muscle pain, arthritis, and nausea are a few more symptoms induced by poor digestion, from a list that can go on and on, and on.

If you suffer from poor digestion, you could be having one or all of these conditions and not even realize it. And from there it will just start to snowball, as you experience more discomfort, more pain, and finally succumb to a much worse condition than poor digestion.

It has been said, that poor digestion is akin to poor nutrition, where with poor digestion you might be getting the proper nutrients into your body, but your system isn't able to absorb it. There are many contributing factors to a poor digestive system, but it has been found that processed foods can be one of the biggest factors.

And no wonder, really with the amount of ready to eat meals, and fast foods that are out there on the market, beckoning to us eagerly when we're at most vulnerable, (read `irritable, tired, and hungry' into that last sentence.)

So how do we stop poor digestion? Ideally it should be easy to stop poor digestion, and correct it so your digestive system is working again properly right? Unfortunately, this is not always true, and for some people an extensive course of medication may be required before they can fully cure their poor digestion problems.

The best course that you can take would be to consult your doctor on how to remedy your condition. Just remember that you will need to remedy it. Poor digestion takes a lot out of your body, and makes it weak, leaving it more prone to attacks from other sources.

Missing vital nutrients due to lack of proper digestion can harm your body more than you realize. So just pick up that phone, and talk to your doctor straight away. Self-diagnosis isn't always right, and it's always better to have a professional opinion to back you up. Listen to your body, it's the greatest gift you could ever have, and it might just be trying to talk to you, don't ignore it. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com , http://www.myanxietyguide.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

Digestion is "the process by which food is converted into substances that can be absorbed and assimilated by the body." This is the definition of digestion given by the American Heritage Dictionary. Digestion happens in the alimentary canal, through the mechanical and enzymatic process of breaking down substances. In the end the substances such as fatty acids, simple sugars, amino acids are used by our cells for proper health.

Thus, healthy digestion begins in the mouth. Chewing is an integral part of the digestion process. The mechanical breakdown and enzymatic action happen in the mouth and are supported by chewing.

The function of the teeth is to tear the food into smaller bits and start the process of mechanical breakdown. The tongue muscles move the food as it is ground and crushed by the teeth into a soft mush. Chewing creates a large surface area and assures proper digestive action by enzymes produced in the stomach and intestine.

Improper chewing leaves large chunks of food going down the esophagus into the stomach and beyond. Since the stomach acid, pancreatic and intestinal enzymes work best on smaller particles, they cannot function properly if they have to work on larger chunks. The result is undigested foods, which breeds pathogenic bacteria and yeast, causing fermentation and rot. If it is allowed to continue, it can damage the intestinal lining causing irritation and inflammation.

While chewing the food, the teeth and tongue mix it with saliva. The saliva is the lubricant that helps to soften the food making it easy to go down the throat. However, if chewing is not done properly there is less saliva in the mouth, which leaves the food dry and makes swallowing difficult, as it irritates the delicate lining of the esophagus.

The first step in a chain of action which assures proper breakdown and assimilation of carbohydrates is the sugar and starch digestion by amylase, a starch digesting enzyme. This enzyme is contained in saliva, which is in short supply if chewing is not adequate.

Proper chewing, on the other hand, assures that carbohydrate rich foods are started on the path to digestion otherwise pathogenic yeast will act upon these foods when they enter the stomach and intestine. Yeast fermentation causes irritation as a side effect of gas, bloating and indigestion. Impaired carbohydrate digestion causes deficiency of simple sugars that our cells need for energy.

Saliva also contains lysozyme, an enzyme found in human tears and stomach secretions. Sir Alexander Fleming of pencillin fame discovered lysozyme in 1922. Lysozyme supports our healthy immune system by destroying the cell walls of bacterial organisms that may be found in the foods we eat. Chewing allows lysozyme to mix with the food in the mouth and act as a front line of defense against harmful bacteria.

To cut a long story short, human beings need to chew food properly for a healthy digestion. And, a healthy digestive system leads to the proper breakdown of carbohydrates and a healthy immune system. <bio>Brandon H.
Have you ever had a bad episode of digestive gas buildup? It can be very embarassing. However what most of us never consider is that fact that flatulence is a primary sign of poor digestion. Poor digestion is problematic for your long term health.

If you do a little comparative test, you will note that you feel better and your digestion is smoother when you eat in a quiet and peaceful environment. Digestion is the process of converting food into an absorbable form that the body can use to produce energy. If this does not happen, protein digestion is incomplete. If protein digestion is not taking place, then the proper number and amounts of amino acids will not be present to make other proteins which are necessary for other important bodily functions.

It is a good idea to support digestion with enzymes responsible for the healthy breakdown of nutrients.

Enzymes are catalysts which help break down nutrients into a form that the body can absorb them.

The health risks behind excessive flatulence are worthy of your immediate attention. Flatulence is caused by undigested foods that are fermenting in your digestive tract. If these foods are not eliminated quickly from your body they turn into fermenting toxins which can actually poison the body and prevent natural healing from ocurring. This is referred to as poisoning from within or endotoxemia.

Naturopathic Doctors strongly suggest that we increase roughage (fiber) in our diets.

The latest holistic medical research suggests the high incidence of heart disease, diabetes, bowel disease, hernia and diverticulitis in western countries on a lack of dietary fiber in the diet.

How much dietary fiber are you consuming on a daily basis?

Americans usually avoid high fiber diets because of a concern that it will increase gas levels and bloating. As a matter of fact eating fiber will help the normal detoxification processes, normalize your bowel and support maintenance of a healthy weight and prevent bowel diseases.

Dietary fiber amounts are now listed on most product labels in supermarkets.

It is suggested that we consume at least 35 grams of dietary fiber daily. This amount can assist in re-establishing proper digestion in your body by toning and strengthening your bowel, eliminating harmful toxins. High Fiber Foods in Your Diet represent the revolutionary way for you to lose weight, prevent disease, stay slim and have more energy. Dietary fiber and digestive enzymes are a great way to improve poor digestion. <bio>Brandon H. Masters is a Health Enthusiast, Researcher and Brandon H.
Very rarely do we think about what goes into eating and digesting our meals. Pretty much, we just toss the food in our mouths, chew it a bit, and let it go down the gullet.

The real process behind digestion is much more complicated and begins as soon as you put the first morsel in your mouth. As soon as the first bite hits your tongue, the mouth is hard at work. The job of your teeth is to break down the food into smaller and smaller pieces until all that is left is a mushy concoction.

While your teeth are breaking the food down, you may notice you are producing more saliva. That saliva has a job as well. Inside the saliva you are producing are enzymes that are going to start breaking down the food into it's componants and begin digestion on some items such as sugars and starches.

The enzyme that does this work is called Lysozyme. It was discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1922. This enzyme working on the food that is in our mouth not only begins the digestion process, but also is a protector. It will destroy bacterial organisms that are found on our food.

The saliva also has a secondary role of making the food softer and wet, so when you swallow, it will not irritate the walls of the esophagus which are extremely delicate.

So what if this process doesn't go as it was designed? While many animals in the animal kingdom can swallow their meals whole, if humans don't chew well and instead swallow large pieces of food, it can lead to a host of digestive and immune problems.

If you don't chew thouroughly and eat too fast, larger chunks of food will make their way down you esophagus, which can inflame your throat, but that is just the beginning of the problem. Next, these larger pieces of food will make your stomach and digestive track work harder to break it down. If it can't, the undigested bits of food can start to rot and decay, in your intestines. The process of fermentation of food inside your body can create bad bacteria that are then battling your body from the inside.

If the foods that you have not chewed well enough are high in carbohydrates, you could begin a yeast growth factory in your digestive tract. Too big of pieces of carbohydrate foods in your system can be a breeding ground for yeast which will begin a fermentation process.

These bacteria and yeast created in the rotting food in your system can also cause inflammation of your intestinal lining and lead to discomfort. Other symptoms this type of reaction in your body, from swallowing too large of pieces of food, are gas, bloating, and indegestion. <bio>Brandon H.
A Waste Management system which is suitable for processing mixed (black bag) waste has been developed from technology first developed in Israel.

It recovers resources from waste while producing renewable energy and helping to reduce carbon emissions. In other words it releases energy from our rubbish, and reduces the quantity of rubbish which might otherwise be sent to landfill, while at the same time reducing climate change.

This is truly a win-win situation!

The ArrowBio process has been developed through a series of pilot and demonstration plants to a level ready to be used commercially in many countries, and is best described as a water-based mechanical biological treatment (MBT) facility with energy recovery.

ArrowBio's process has been developed in such a way that it can either be used as a stand-alone solution or in conjunction with other technologies. For example it can be sited within sustainable energy parks to provide a source of energy as well as recycled materials for further processing. The recycled materials are re-used as feedstock by the other businesses based within the park to create a variety of products.

Two Stage Anaerobic Digestor

ArrowBio sets out to fully recover and wash the recyclable elements of the waste, so it should be favoured by environmental groups which tend to object to alternative processes which handle mixed waste, like incineration, on the basis that the ability of incineration to handle mixed wastes reduces the necessity to separate and recycle. The argument is that incineration makes it too easy to neglect recycling, so it should not be used.

The process has at its core a two stage anaerobic digestor which has been optimized for better energy yield than competing systems, from every unit mass of organic matter processed.

Extracting the maximum available gas yield, is in fact a stated primary aim of the ArrowBio processs.

This is recognised as good policy environmentally, and of course the gas and, or electricity generates revenue, which helps to pay for the upkeep of the plant.

The process consists of two distinct yet integrated components: a "front-end" wet Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and a "back-end" advanced anaerobic digestion system.

The wet MRF combines standard solid waste handling technology in combination with liquid and slurry pumping, water based processing facilitates, passive separation, and cleaning of recyclables and their automatic conveyance around the facility, while also suppressing odours and dust.

In the wet MRF, the action of the water cleans, and recovers, ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals and plastics separated by type. These are then sorted into recycled materials of various grades that can be sold directly into the recycling market.

A "hydrocrusher" has also been successfully developed by ArrowBio which forms part of the wet (anaerobic) process. In effect the biodegradable waste is jetted with high pressure jets of water through a series of pipes. Food and paper is torn apart, greatly increasing the surface area available to biological action, while simultaneously suspending the organic chemicals in a watery solution.

Any waste that is not recoverable or that is not sent through the anaerobic digesters exits from the ArrowBio facility as a residue, and is normally present in only in minor quantities.

The first part of ArrowBio's anaerobic digestion process is known as the acidogenic stage, and the second is a methanogenic stage. The biomass achieves optimum efficiency compared with single tank AD, and optimisation of pH levels, temperature and residence times is achieved automatically.

The plant has low emissions. The ArrowBio design needs no costly gas scrubbing stage, and the largely water borne technique does not produce the troublesome (dust, odour, etc) emissions experienced from some other processes.

Recognition of the sustainability benefits of Anaerobic Digestion in releasing energy from our trash is rising fast.

Find out more about this technology for the future, at the Anaerobic Digestion Community web site, and more about the ArrowBio AD Process as well. <bio>Steve Last is an Anaerobic Digestion expert who believes that everyone should know the great potential of AD to use the neglected source of energy which is literally "under our noses" in our trash!
Working as a nutritional consultant, I get asked a lot, "If our body does make our own digestive enzymes, then why do we need to supplement them?"

My usual response to that question is you most likely don't need to supplement them if and only if you are eating approximately 90% fresh raw foods which naturally contain enzymes. However, as you and I both know, this is not the case, especially with the Standard American Diet, appropriately abbreviated at SAD.

When we eat, our food sits in our stomach for about 45 minutes before making its way through the duodenum. Not enough digestion occurs in our stomachs because we lake the enzymes naturally found in foods which is killed in heating and processing.

So imagine the benefit of adding a balanced broad spectrum digestive enzyme supplement to this process.

Approximately 60-80% of our energy goes to digestion. Supplementing digestive enzymes greatly reduces the burden on the pancreas and the entire digestive process by assisting in breaking down foods into smaller and smaller components that become much easier to assimilate. This greatly increases our energy.

I have had reports back from people who take digestive enzymes that after eating they used to feel full and sluggish. But after taking them, they are filled with energy and no longer slip into the "food coma" after a large meal.

It is believed by many nutritionists that our bodies have a specific "enzyme potential" that can be exhausted. Our bodies make two main kinds of enzymes, digestive, and metabolic. Digestive deals with digesting food, and metabolic deal with other processes such as tissue repair.

When we are not eating enough raw foods, or supplementing digestive enzymes, the body uses resources that should go towards metabolic enzymes and puts them towards digestion. So, in essence, supplementing digestive enzymes will help to keep the whole body younger and healthier by allowing our metabolic enzymes do their job properly.

It is my opinion that unless you are eating a very well balanced, 80-90% raw food diet, everyone should supplement a digestive enzyme.

People who supplement digestive enzymes report improvements in health problems such as heartburn, indigestion, gerd, diarrhea, constipation, diabetes, bloating, and a host of other health problems.

When looking for a good enzyme to take, make sure your product is broad spectrum, plant based, and broad ph so that it can work in both the acidic stomach, and alkaline intestines. <bio>The author is a nutritional consultant and publisher of Jeff's Healthy Living natural health and nutrition Web site (http://www.jeffshealthyliving.com) </bio>

Enzymes are one of the most important things in human body that do everything ranging from helping us to breathe to digestion to living life. So most chemical reactions in the body would occur too slowly without the effects of enzymes.

An enzyme is a protein that catalyzes, or speeds up a chemical reaction. Enzymes help in digestion of food. The digestive enzymes in our human bodies break down food into tiny particles that get easily accumulated by the body into the blood stream. These are the compounds that our human body uses for fuel, repair and growth. Food is filled with enzymes called "food enzymes" that help in the digestion of food. When we cook our food we unconsciously destroy those enzymes.

How do pancreas work?

Our body, in general, can manufacture enzymes called "digestive enzymes" in our pancreas. When we eat a diet that is filled with mostly cooked and processed foods, devoid of all enzymes, then pancreas starts working hard on it and thus manufactures the enzymes that the body needs to digest the food. So pancreas overworks and the body starts spending much more energy and resources on digestion instead of spending on important things like boosting an immune system, fighting diseases and repairing body parts.

Types of enzymes

However you should try to heal the overworking capacity in pancreas by filling it with an abundance of enzymes. Foods rich in enzymes include raw materials, vegetables, seeds and nuts, as well as marinated and fermented foods. After you complete overloading your pancreas with enzyme supplementation you can check with your health care provider whether you need more medication to improve on your enzyme building system.

Food enzymes not only help in digestion procedure but they also help in cleansing the body, breaking down allergens and environmental products that can potentially prove to be harmful. So we should always have a diet that contains a range of fresh enzyme filled foods, to make our bodies stay disease free.

Capacity of enzymes

For most enzymes to operate in the body, the optimal temperature is 37 degree Celsius or 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Most of the human enzymes have a maximal activity at pH around 7.2, which is the pH of most body fluids. However, there are exceptions such as, pepsin. However, this enzyme is most effective in the highly acidic conditions of the stomach, pH 2. The pancreatic enzymes work optimally in the alkaline conditions of pH 8.5 of the small intestine.

Enzymes have a plethora of responsibilities in the body, digestion, metabolism of carbohydrates, and much more. With all the right ingredients of enzymes, the body can remain fit and healthy. <bio>Author Barney Garcia is a proud contributing author and enjoys writing about many different topics.
Remember all those times mom told you to chew your food? She was on to something. Beneficial enzymes released by your salivary glands jumpstart the digestive process, which in turn facilitates the breakdown of food and the subsequent transfer of nutrients, water and electrolytes from the digestive tract to the bloodstream.

The chemical processes of digestion begin with reducing food's larger constituents to smaller and smaller molecules. Within this procedure, enzymes catalyze the chemical reactions, making it possible for food to be digested and absorbed. Each type of food we eat contains different combinations of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, as well as vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. The end result of the digestive process is that those nutrients are broken down into forms usable by the body's cells. For example, when proteins from meat or vegetarian foods are digested, they are broken down into amino acids, which are subsequently used to build the proteins incorporated into organs and body tissues.

Further, because unhealthy eating habits can lead to a buildup of harmful toxins in the body (which can subsequently lead to weight gain and poor health), adding a daily enzyme supplement to your diet may also help rid the body of toxic chemicals. Many experts believe that taking supplementary enzymes to aid digestion enables the body to devote more time to producing the enzymes that help eliminate toxins. When choosing a digestive enzyme supplement, look for a formula that combines several different enzymes such as lipase (to help digest fats), amylase (for carbohydrates), and protease (for proteins), as this combination more closely mimics natural enzyme activity. If you have a particular digestive problem, however, individual enzymes can provide targeted support. For example, those who are lactose intolerant may benefit from supplementing with lactase, the enzyme that helps break down milk sugar.

Proteolytic enzymes, which help break down protein, are now available from the kiwi fruit (kiwi protease), pineapple (bromelain) and papaya (papain). Research shows that these enzymes help the body break down protein, casein, and gluten. Digestive enzymes are also effective in the fight against inflammation.

Plant-based enzymes are gaining popularity as people discover their potential to help promote healthy digestion. The main advantage of these supplements is their versatility: although each person's digestive system varies in its acidity and alkalinity, plant enzymes are equally effective in both types of environments. But the bottom line is simple: Supplementing with digestive enzymes relieves the body of some of the burden of creating these chemicals, giving it the opportunity to invest more energy in making other types of enzymes, such as those used for detoxification. Doing so can also release energy to repair damaged tissue and slow the aging process, offering our bodies a valuable defense against the many stresses of our modern lifestyle. <bio>Brenda Watson is a New York Times Bestselling author, a Naturopathic Doctor and President of Renew Life Formulas.
Throughout Europe all nations are committed to the processing of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) to divert as much of our organic waste as possible away from landfill. This is a high priority for the United Kingdom if we are to reach Government recycling targets which are designed to ensure we comply with required landfill diversion rates as set by the EU Landfill Directive.

What is the easiest way to divert organic waste away from landfill, and close a lot of landfills for good?

The answer to this is composting. Composting is the natural way to bring left-over organic material back into the nutrient cycle. It also replaces chemical fertilisers and improves the quality of the soil, reducing crop pests, and retaining more moisture in the soil which then means that less watering is needed.

So composting is a good way to divert waste from landfill, but is there real demand for the huge quantities that could be made from the very large proportion of our municipal solid waste which is organic?

No, there are good reasons for concluding that there will never be a large enough demand for it from farmers and gardeners, because there is a huge amount of organic waste in our rubbish from potato peelings to newspapers, cardboard, and even our old non-synthetic clothes.

Composting can also be the first stage toward more sophisticated waste processing technologies such as Anaerobic Digestion, and take us toward a much more sustainable carbon economy which many see as the intermediate step civilisation needs to go through before entering the age of the hydrogen economy.

The vision of a carbon economy leads us toward a need to increase methane production. This is because there will be a demand to produce a lot of methane which can then be processed further into biofuel such as biomethanol and biodiesel - away from dependency on oil as our fuel source - and toward a marvelous new freedom from fossil fuels.

However, just as in most scientific and commercial advances, they work best through evolution rather than revolution, and so it will be with composting. Many nations including the UK, are now composting very successfully, but we appreciate that composting alone will not bring us to the point where we become sustainable.

We realise that we need sustainable renewable fuels very urgently to stop using fossil fuels and reduce the rate of climate change. By building on our success with household green waste and by beginning to compost commercial waste, and food wastes too, we are developing a culture which begins to accept organic waste processing, and not landfilling as the norm. Many successful new businesses have been created to process compost in the UK, and those businesses will naturally seek to develop and diversify.

Composting requires energy, it is a net carbon emitter and it is still not very sustainable for Municipal Solid Wastes. It is not the best use of waste organic matter which can contain a lot of contaminating materials.

So, how can we adapt composting to be a net carbon emissions reducer, or andquot;Carbon Negativeandquot; and allow these new business to expand their hard won skills in biowaste processing?

The answer is Anaerobic Digestion for all the organic waste feedstocks suitable for it.

The process of anaerobic digestion (composting without air (oxygen)) uses organic waste materials to produce methane gas. The methane gas produced is a sustainable fuel for direct burning for power generation.

Doing this is carbon positive, it uses only renewable resources, it replaces fossil fuel use. It will reduce climate change.

Put this all together and you have real sustainability. A way of living without climate change, and without jeopardising the lives of later generations from global warming. <bio>To buy sustainable (peat free) compost visit http://www.compost-for-sale.com and also see this http://www.anaerobic-digestion.com web site for more information about AD. </bio>

A very important part of the way your body works relates to the digestive process. Ingestion is the process of your food being broken down into smaller pieces that are useful to your body to operate. It's a complicated process that includes enzymes that break the food you eat down into simpe sugars, fatty acids and amino acids that can be asborbed by the body.

The first front on the path to digestion is the mouth. When you take a bite of something and chew it that is the beginning of the breakdown of that item both from pressure and some of chemical reaction.

The mechanical part of the process is through the teeth. When we chew, we are breaking the pieces of food we eat down into smaller pieces. This is not just to prevent choking, but also to start the digestive process. When your tongue and teeth move the food items around and break them into smaller and smaller pieces until they are almost a paste consistency, making the food easier for the body to use for energy.

If you forget to chew well, you'll be swallowing larger pieces of food that will not only possibly get stuck in your throat, but also can make things difficult for the rest of your digestive system. When the larger chunks get into your stomach, it may have a hard time breaking them down into smaller pieces. That can leave the bigger food pieces in your digestive tract for some time and can cause them to start rotting, inside you. This rotting food can harm your intestines.

If you chew your food long enough, the mouth will create saliva that makes the food even softer for easier passage down the esohpagus and into the stomach.

In addition, this saliva also has enzymes that help the digestive process along. One of these items is called amylase. It assists in starch digestion. This head-start in breaking down the carbohydrates you eat will help your body to get the items it needs from these foods later on.

If you don't give the saliva a chance to start to break down these starches, you may swallow larger chunks of starchy foods. These can get stuck in your stomach and intestines and be attacked by pathogenic yeast in the body. This can lead to yeast fermentation which can cause symptoms such as bloating, gas, indegestion and other intestinal discomfort and irritation.

Another enzyme in the saliva that is an aid to the digetive process is Lysozyme. This enzyme was the discovery of Sir Alexander Fleming in 1922. If there are bacteria still alive on the foods you yeat, Lysozyme will destory them and keep them from harming the body.

All of this points out the importance of taking the time to chew instead of eating quickly. Proper chewing at the beginning of the digestive process leads to benefits all the way through. <bio>Brandon H. Graduating your dog to a better diet will impact his health in ways that you would have never thought.

Quality Food And Healthy Dog Digestion...

It's obvious when a dog receives the necessary nutrients, vitamins and dog enzymes that it needs by his skin, coat and the lack of digestive problems.A quality all natural dog food canned or dry, will deliver superior results to your dog's general health.

If you are not feeding your dog a "premium" dog food then chances are he is lacking in what he needs to thrive as a dog. Don't be sold by fancy packaging, what is actually in the bag is what counts. Meat should be the first ingredient whether it is beef, lamb, chicken, turkey or fish. Avoid dog foods that say meat byproducts.

Meat byproducts could be just about anything including things that you would not want to hear. That is why it is very important to look for the primary ingredient to say the name of the meat.In the past decade many private dog food companies have made a tremendous difference in providing dogs with quality foods.

Consumers are beginning to realize that this is money well spent. If your dog is not receiving what his body needs, his coat will be dull and his skin will be flaky. He will have gas and flatulence problems daily.

Unfortunately, your dog gets what you pay for when it comes to his food and health. You can easily improve your dog's digestion problems with a high quality food. Dog enzymes are also a very effective way to provide your dog with the necessary nutrients his body needs.

It is best to start with his food and if he still has gas or flatulence problems, dog enzymes will most likely be what he needs. <bio>Janie is an avid dog lover with over twenty five years of dog care and handling experience.
Canines have the ability to consume large quantities of food at one time and can rest between meals. In the wild, this is known as andquot;gorging, andquot; which is beneficial in hunting large game. Canines, like carnivores, can devour large meals after a hunt, and, thanks to the digestive function, can then leisurely wait until the next meal opportunity arises.

To keep your canine's gastrointestinal system functioning at its finest, a healthy, well-balanced diet is of the essence. The quality of the diet can be measured in its ease of digestion. Large, malodorous stool is a reliable indicator that something is amiss in the digestive tract -- and the food going into it would be the most likely perpetrator.

Your canine's digestive system is an impressive, powerful function of the mouth, stomach, small and large intestines, aided by the liver and pancreas.

Digestion begins in the mouth, where saliva lubricates the food and passes it down the esophagus. The canine's teeth -- sharp, jagged, blade-shaped molars -- are designed for gripping, tearing and shredding, and are specifically suited for its digestive capabilities. Other mammals have flat molars, characteristic of grinding. The canine's jaws, however, are incapable of moving sideways, and instead are hinged. This allows them to open widely and ingest large chunks of meat whole.

Swallowed food passes down the esophagus to the stomach. The stomach of a canine is very acidic with a pH registering as low as 1. Food is well mixed and broken down before contents leave the stomach as chyme.

Chyme is the fluid that passes easily into the small intestine, where the pancreas and liver provide additional digestive enzymes. These enzymes continue protein digestion and also provide carbohydrate and fat digestion. Nutrients are absorbed from the small intestine into the bloodstream.

By the time any food reaches the large intestine, most of the nutrients have been processed and absorbed. It is here that water and electrolytes are assimilated and bacteria can break down undigested fiber. The wastes are then excreted.

Understandably, large amounts of vegetation, grains and fiber are difficult for canines to process. With their short and simple digestive tracts, they are incapable of fermenting and absorbing these foods like an herbivore would. High-grain, high-fiber diets, then, only result in a much larger stool volume. The canine has a short digestive tract that helps to easily digest animal flesh and fat. The food spends a much longer time in the stomach, which produces a higher amount of hydrochloric acid, and aids in the breakdown of animal proteins, bones and fat.

Digestive issues are one health concern your canine need never suffer, as the solution is right at your fingertips, and completely within your discretion.
This is the second article in a five part series devoted to digestion where we have been following a nutritionally poor meal, typical of America, from the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach. We have seen that the food enters the mouth where enzymes are added via sublingual glands. The meal then moves through the esophagus where it is warmed, and then to the stomach where pre-digestion takes place. We will follow this nutritionally poor meal into the stomach.

Food is chewed in the mouth and saliva is mixed with this food. Saliva is made up of an <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/alkaline+electrolyte" rel="tag">alkaline electrolyte solution that moistens the food, mucus that serves as a lubricant, amylase, an enzyme that initiates the digestion of starch, lipase, an enzyme that begins the digestion of fat, and protease, which digests protein. Most carbohydrates are broken down by the process of chewing the food and mixing it with enzymes. Hopefully that food had viable enzymes to mix with the enzymes supplied by the mouth.

Pre-digestion in the Stomach

Here is where the food that Americans typically eat leads us directly to disease. By eating mostly refined cooked foods with meat we let our body down. It is like a very good friend of yours is lying in front of you dying of thirst and you hand him a glass of salt water. It is water but it will gradually kill him.

Below I am going to trace the food's path as it moves into the stomach, and see what happens to it and how it is treated by the stomach and the rest of the digestive system. This is information that few Americans know about. When I received this information my mind was shocked and I immediately changed my style of eating completely and for life. So please read and I pray that this powerful truth changes your life as it did mine. After swallowing the food, it moves down the esophagus, which is 18 to 24 inches long. The esophagus moves through the warm core of the body and is responsible for warming the food to close to body temperature, which is ideally 98.6. This is very important as enzymes digest food best at between 94 and 104 degrees. So, if the ideal situation exists in the esophagus (ice water is not added to the food) the food is warmed to somewhere between 96 and 98 degrees before it enters the stomach.

This food enters the stomach through the cardiac sphincter, which is where the esophagus and the stomach meet. An empty stomach is like a flattened balloon until food enters it. As the food enters the upper part of the stomach, it stretches and enlarges to accommodate the food. In fact, the stomach will enlarge beyond the size of the meal until it is fully inflated. While the stomach is inflating to its full size which takes somewhere between 40 to 60 minutes, pre-digestion takes place. Pre-digestion, is the food sitting in the stomach being digested by the enzymes that came with it. The ideal ph here is about seven, very alkaline. This pre-digestion is considered by many nutritionists to be the most important stage of digestion. This is where the enzymes from our food and mouth digest and prepare the food for absorption.

What are Enzymes?

Before we go any further I would like you to understand why enzymes are so important. The answer to this question is crucial to you understanding your health. Understand this and you understand why the type of food you eat and the way it is handled is so important. Your energy, strength, immune system and all the systems of your body right down to each individual cell depend completely on enzymes. Without enzymes nothing happens in your body, or if it does it could take years to take place; essentially you are dead.

The enzymes we use are both produced by cells in our body and also brought in with food made by other living cells. These enzymes are proteins produced in living cells that affect chemical reactions. An example of this is a banana sitting in a bowl. After a few days, you notice the skin turning brown. That is the enzymes in the banana acting as a catalyst and causing a chemical reaction which releases energy.

Without these reactions caused by the enzymes the food you eat will not be turned into energy or supplies for the body. Here are just some of the other functions of enzymes in the body. All our vitamins, trace elements and minerals are dissolved down to molecular level by enzymes. Only at that level can they and our food be absorbed by our body. They also control digestion, cell growth, and wound healing plus the phagocytes of the immune system use enzymes to cope with pathogens.

Once the stomach completes the pre-digestive process, the food then undergoes chemical and mechanical digestion. Here in the lower part of the stomach, peristaltic contractions (mechanical digestion) churn the bolus, which mixes with strong digestive juices. These juices include powerful hydrochloric acid, which helps break down the bolus into a liquid called chyme. In addition, enzymes called pepsin and cathepsin are added to the juice in the stomach to break down most of the protein in the food. This process can take several hours depending on the meal eaten. The ideal ph here is about three, very acidic.

The hydrochloric acid has three purposes. The first is to break down mineral bonds from our diet. Now when they pass through our intestines they are small enough to pass through the wall to be used by the body. Second, to clean the food of pathogens by creating an acidic environment that destroys the pathogens. Third, change pepsinogen into pepsin, which breaks down the long protein strings that are the essential and non-essential amino acids in the food. These are broken down by pepsin into polypeptides, peptides and tri-peptides so they can be utilized by our body.

Once the food is broken down, it has the consistency of cake batter. This is called chyme and is released into the duodenum by the pyloric sphincter. If this chyme is properly prepared at the stomach your health is good and you never get sick. If the chyme is not properly prepared disease will soon follow and the person will find all their genetic weaknesses. This is why digestive enzymes and pre-digestion are such important keys to good health.<bio>Paul Blake is a doctor of herbal medicine and a master herbalist.
Since `acne' is acknowledged by human beings, many theories in describing its true cause are also put by them. And the search is not exhausted till date. Continuously researchers are coming up with new, innovative causes- that you might not have even imaged for the troubles that your acne was giving you.

The common causes outlined are unhygienic body conditions, excessive oil production from the oil glands of the skin, hormonal imbalance, excessive accumulation of dead skin, stress and tension and over-eating and consumption of oily, fried food. But have you ever given a thought to this: a bad digestive system can also aggravate or be the root cause of acne disaster you are trying to get rid of since long?

To understand this relationship more clearly, let's first put some light on the working of our stomach. Our stomach is the house of all the food we consume. It also houses many acids, enzymes and bases that aid in the total digestion of the food. The food in a semi-digested form, leaves the stomach and travels to the pancreas, small intestines, large intestines and finally to the anus. Through this journey, all the glands help in the digestion process by contributing their share of enzymes.

Indigestion occurs when any one of the enzymes, produced by any one of the glands goes missing. Sample this, for proper digestion of food to take place in the stomach, presence of adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid or Hcl is very important. When there is scarcity of Hcl in the body, the body misses on the absorption of many important minerals. Deficiency of important minerals in the body in turn weakens the immune system. As your body becomes weak, it loses the capacity to fight back bacteria which itself is a major cause for acne problem.

Now when this food in a semi-digested from reaches pancreas, the enzymes present in the pancreas will try to compensate for the loss by producing an increased enzymatic activity. But if pancreas is also deficient in the enzymes content, the food tends to stay there and with passage of time starts producing toxins. These toxins are then evenly distributed throughout the blood leading to impure blood. And presence of impure blood is also one of the main causes of appearance of acne on face and on body.

Therefore the only natural and easy way to fight acne is to follow a healthy and nutritious diet. The food that you munch upon should be easy to digest and should have high fiber or roughage content. Besides, you should try to avoid oily food as much as you can. Water is also a good therapy for treating and fighting acne. Water helps in carrying with itself all the toxins produced during the process of digestion. It is also advised that you should eat regularly without missing on any of the meals. Try to incorporate as many fruits as you can.

Remember the golden rule, a healthy diet plan and a healthy life style is a route to a radiant, gorgeous and problem free skin. <bio>To get more information visit http://www.acnetalks.com/pimple/magazine/edition/Acne-Types.htm, http://www.acnetalks.com/pimple/magazine/edition/Acne-Treatment.htm and http://www.acnetalks.com/pimple/magazine/edition/Acne-Medication.htm </bio>

There is nothing wrong with the usage of prescription medication or antacids as a way to fight against acid reflux. These methods are proven. However, for those who suffer from chronic and frequent acid reflux, such methods are not always the best choice for treatment. Sometimes, using acid reflux alternative medicine can be more beneficial to your overall health.

This may sound strange, after all, why would alternative forms be better than prescriptions? Nonetheless, alternative medicine actually can be better than conventional medicine simply because they can eliminate some of the side-effects known to accompany other medications.

Many antacids can shut down the body's natural digestion processes, so some people turn to alternative acid reflux remedies to avoid these complications. Supplements like orange peel extract, fiber and green tea can help ease the symptoms without impacting on the body's processing ability.

Orange Peel Extract: As an acid reflux alternative option there are few better than orange peel extract. This works to speed up the digestion process, without removing the absorption of minerals, and keeps your stomach from producing too much acid. They do not, as some would think, stop acid production. Instead, they merely help the food leave your stomach more quickly, which reduces the need for acid production. This will keep your stomach from refluxing acid into the throat and reduce symptoms.

Fiber: Fiber, to put it simply, absorbs excess acid. This does not cure reflux but it dramatically helps keep the symptoms from appearing. When the acid is absorbed, it is removed naturally from the body as part of the digestion process. This is arguably the easiest method to use since there are so many ways to get a dosage of fiber. Vegetables and fruits are excellent sources of fiber. Everything from spinach to avocados can give you what you need. If you happen to have a particular aversion to high-fiber foods, however, fiber tablets are also available.

Green Tea: Green teas health benefits are well-known, so it should come as no surprise that green tea may have a positive impact on reducing acid reflux. When you drink green tea, it helps to soothe your digestive system and works to balance acidic levels. This, while not a cure for reflux, will help you maintain a healthier stomach, resulting in less outbursts of acid. Of course, due to the fact that green tea has so many other health benefits, you would do well to drink it aside from reducing reflux!

Acid reflux alternative medicine can have certain advantages over prescriptions and antacids. They do not altar the body's natural processes. Instead, they work with them.

Sign up below for the free Acid Reflux newsletter and discover the many other natural treatments for treating and preventing acid reflux.

However, please keep in mind that not all acid reflux alternative medicine may be an improvement over antacids, so you should always speak to your doctor about your treatment methods. However, many of the alternative options will give you the results you want without causing unwanted side effects. Alternative medicine does work for many sufferers and may be able to help you fight acid reflux. <bio>By Kathryn Whittaker.
Finding a home remedy for acid reflux may be easier than you think. There are several household items found in just about every kitchen that can bring relief to your acid reflux pain. In fact there are so many natural home remedies I will only be able to list a few here. It may take some trial and error to find what works for you because not one treatment will work on everyone but once you find something that works it will change how you treat your acid reflux discomfort. For instance, let's say you have some acid reflux pain and discomfort shortly after a meal. You need something fast to relieve the burning sensation in your throat and you're not thrilled about taking prescription medications. A quick look in the around the kitchen and soon and you find several that will give you the relief you are looking for that may have been previously overlooked as a cure.

Here is a short list of home remedies that others have found helpful:

1. Aloe Vera: Many do not know that aloe vera also comes in juice form. This has the same cooling effect as the topical treatment and will reduce the intensity of the acid level. You can take this daily but do not need to take it more than once a day.

2. Alma: Known for its anti oxidant properties alma can be an effect cure for some.

3. Apple or Apple Cider Vinegar: We have all heard the old saying about eating an apple a day buy did you know it is also one of the remedies for acid reflux? Apple cider vinegar made of apple juice also is effective. This can also be purchased in pill form but the liquid form is more easily absorbed by the body.

4. Fresh Vegetables: Not only fresh vegetables but also fresh vegetable juices can be consumed. You can make a combination of vegetables and juice them.

5. Fresh Black Pepper: An herb known for aiding in the digestion process.

6. Garlic Effect: Chewing 2 to 3 leaves of garlic cloves also improves digestion and will keep the acid level in check.

7. Ginger: Ginger should be consumed in small quantities and can be used in many recipes as well as in tea. This is another way to improve your digestion.

8. Jeshthamadh: This is a sweet tasting spice that can be added to tea to be used as a natural anti acid.

Whit so many acid reflux home remedies available I couldn't possibly list them all here but I think you get the idea that there are things you can do to take control of your acid reflux treatment. If you do not want to treat your acid reflux with medications or just do not have your medication available you can find relief with natural products found in many kitchens. You may even want to experiment with different natural treatments to identify what will give you relief when you need it most. If you do not find the cure you were looking for on this list just be persistent and keep looking for a home remedy for your acid reflux that will give you the relief you are looking for. <bio>You can find more information on natural cures and home remedies for acid reflux, heartburn and GERD at http://www.acidrefluxfocus.com </bio>

There is an old saying that the simplest answer is usually the best one, and it is remarkable how many times we as a society encounter a problem and seem incapable of using the simplest solution, instead wasting our time and efforts on a pursuit for some other solution. We, as greedy people, consider it a fundamental right to eat what we want and when we want, and it is this that means many acid reflux sufferers end up soldiering on with their symptoms rather than dealing with them.

Eating is not only part of our life, it is our life, and without this fundamental process our bodies cannot function, so eating is required to survive and thrive. However, somewhat regrettably, most of us lack the discipline to analyze each item of food, assess its respective nutritional value and then consume it based on that, or throw it in the bin.

Taking control of what we eat

Whilst our bodies may need proteins to generate new tissue and cells, water to hydrate itself, and iron to help produce red blood cells, it is our brain and our emotions that make the choice as to what we eat. What we want to eat takes preference over what we should eat, and eating is so much more than a strictly mechanical process designed to fuel the body. Our eating patterns are a reflection of our lives, who and what we are, and so for the overwhelming majority of us, food becomes that crucial ally in difficult time, be it a bad day at work, or stresses of the world causing a drop in our mood.

Broken down to an extremely simplistic level, the food we eat through the magic of digestion ends up in our stomach, which then breaks the food down. Our stomach contains hydrochloric acid, a particularly potent form of acid which is so dangerous, it's contained within a layer of armored protective tissue to separate it from the rest of the body.

Getting off the couch

Light exercise, especially walking just after a meal is an excellent and not especially demanding way of helping to ease the digestion process, as it prevents the stomach from becoming too swollen, which is the main cause of acid reflux.

A change in eating habits, not only in terms of what you eat but also how you eat can also have a major benefit. Because the stomach breaks down the food using the acid to do so, if there is too much food, more acid has to be produced to compensate. Therefore, eating more frequently but less food at any given time will give the stomach a much better chance to process the food effectively. Eating more slowly operates in the same manner.

Whilst reviled due to its rather unpleasant taste, an excellent means of having instant relief from acid reflux is to mix some baking soda into water, stir briskly and then drink (nose pinching optional!). For those of you who do not have such an iron constitution, you may want to drink some lightly warmed milk to help soothe your tummy.<bio>The agony of heartburn won't go away on it's own! Instead of looking for over-the-counter cures why not have a look at the natural remedies for acid reflux that can heal you safely and quickly!
This is the third article in a five part series devoted to digestion where we have been following a nutritionally poor meal, typical of America, from the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach. We have seen that the food enters the mouth where enzymes are added via sublingual glands. The meal then moves through the esophagus where it is warmed, and then to the stomach where pre-digestion takes place depending on the nutritional value of the meal (does the meal have enzymes to digest protein, fats and carbohydrates). Then stomach acid and a strong protein digesting enzyme are added to complete the stomachs processing of this meal. Now we will follow this nutritionally poor meal from the stomach into the duodenum.

The Function of the Duodenum

The chyme (digested food from stomach the consistency of a milk shake) is slowly transported from the pylorus (a valve at the end portion of the stomach) through the pyloric sphincter into the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum where further digestion occurs.

The inside wall of the duodenum has a smooth surface like the skin on your face. It is at this point that the acidic chyme must be alkalized so the assimilation of this nutrient filled liquid is as complete as possible. In addition, this alkalization is very important so that the acid from the stomach is neutralized and will not burn the walls of the small intestine.

The duodenum, an eight to nine inch long chamber is where more chemicals of digestion are added. The Ampule of Papilla is located in the duodenum wall. This is an opening where bile from the gallbladder, and enzymes and bicarbonate from the pancreas enter the duodenum. They combine with the chyme to begin the final part of digestion in the small intestines. Enzymes are also excreted through the walls of the duodenum to assist with this digestion.

The Average American Meal and what happens at the Duodenum

Your body is aware of what you have eaten (there are sensors in the duodenum) and it calls on your liver, gallbladder, pancreas and other avenues of digestive chemicals to assist in the breakdown and assimilation of nutrients and protection of the digestive tract. Your body expects you to bring in live food rich in enzymes (uncooked foods such as produce) to assist in this digestive process.

Here at the duodenum is where the body has a chance to recover from any mistakes made at your mouth. But without enough raw food to supply the enzymes and alkaline that was needed to create a balanced meal no recovery will take place. A meal totally unprepared will continue through the duodenum to the small intestine where impossible assimilation is undertaken. From this point on the damage to your body takes place over and over bringing disease.

If you do not bring in enough live enzymes with the food you have eaten you may expect to have acid indigestion (undigested food), acid reflux, ulcers and constipation all caused by food improperly prepared at your mouth (no live enzymes). As this improperly prepared food enters the duodenum, your digestive awareness will call on the pancreas and gallbladder to do the job you did not do. Your pancreas and gallbladder will then strain to prepare this acidic chyme for release into the small intestine. Allow this to happen enough times and you will get sick.

Constantly releasing acidic unprepared chyme from the duodenum to the small intestine, can lead to such diseases as Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel disease and leaky gut. These in turn can lead to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, muscular dystrophy, etc.<bio>Paul Blake is a doctor of herbal medicine and a master herbalist.
Many people suffer from the problem of flatulence, which is the act of expelling intestinal gas from the rectum. There are only two sources of gas in the gastrointestinal tract, swallowed air that enters the stomach, mostly gulped while eating or drinking, and the gas produced by bacteria present in the intestines, primarily the colon. The air that we swallow is rarely the cause of excessive flatulence. It mainly occurs due to the over-production of gas by the intestinal bacteria present in the large intestine or colon. Sometimes, flatulence is associated with some specific conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. People who suffer from irritable bowel flatulence may also experience other symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and abnormal bowel habits such as diarrhea or constipation.

In the digestion process, the food that is not digested in the small intestine, primarily sugars and polysaccharides (e.g. starch, cellulose), is digested by the bacteria present in the large intestine. In this process, bacteria produce different gases such as hydrogen, methane, etc. Lactose, sorbitol and fructose are the main sugars that are poorly digested.

The amount of gas produced by the bacteria varies from person to person. Some people have more bacteria in their colon, which results in more production of gas. Some people have particular bacteria that produce more gas. In some people, digestion of food in the small intestines is not complete, which can also effect the levels of gas produced.

Continue reading to discover natural methods to relieve Irritable Bowel symptoms and sign up for our free newsletter.

Conditions such as lactose intolerance, and celiac disease may also result in poor digestion. Since more undigested food reaches to the bacteria in the colon, it results in more gas. Some people suffer the spreading of gas-producing bacteria from large intestine into the small intestine. Therefore, the food reaches the bacteria before its complete digestion or absorption by the small intestine, and this increased volume of undigested foods which is available to the bacteria produces more gas also.

Excessive flatulence can also be associated with eating of particular type of food. For example, eating beans can lead to excessive flatulence.

The unused gas distends the intestine. The intestinal muscles contract and push the gas further along the intestine until the gas is finally expelled. People who have constipation as the main symptom in irritable bowel syndrome experience more flatulence and generally pass more gas than those who don't.

For those with a hypersensitive intestinal tract, like those with IBS, the build up of gas can trigger other IBS symptoms.

There are a number of options available to a person with excessive flatulence, which include the identification of the foods that seem to cause the problems, and reducing the volume eaten of these foods. They can often be reintroduced slowly at a later stage.

While evaluating the problem of excessive flatulence in a person, the physician may ask the patient to count the number of times he/she passes gas for several days.

It helps in confirming the presence of excessive flatulence since the count correlates well with the total amount (volume) of gas passed. It is normal to pass gas about 20 times a day. However, it is not always easy to measure the amount of passed gas. If an individual passes gas less than 20 times a day but complains of excessive gas, the problem might be something other than excessive gas. For example, the lack of ability to control the passing of gas or the foul odor of the gas might be the main problem.

Such problems are also socially embarrassing and may prompt individuals to consult a physician. These problems are not correlated to excessive gas production or Irritable Bowel Flatulence and have different treatments. <bio>Sign up for Susan Reynolds' free IBS newsletter - Overflowing with easy to implement methods to help you discover more about Irritable Bowel Flatulence at http://www.natural-irritable-bowel-syndrome-relief.com/?source=is </bio>
