<content:encoded><![CDATA[ Today's colleges and universities are changing with the times. Programs change as do the ways that students are taught. However there is one growing program on almost every public college campus that administrators are not proud to point out to distinguished visitors -- developmental education. This article will address the good, the bad, and the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ugly+truth" rel="tag">ugly truth</a> about developmental <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/education+classes" rel="tag">education classes</a>. <br /><br /> There are many ways that developmental education classes are good for both students and the institutions they serve. Developmental education classes help students who are not prepared for college-level work in reading, writing and math develop the necessary skills to succeed in college. Some of these students are <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nontraditional+students" rel="tag">nontraditional students</a> returning to school after a long lapse and need help brushing up on skills. Other students are traditional students who did not acquire the necessary skills before graduating from high school. Developmental education classes serve an important function in that they help bridge the gap for those who want to attend college and do not have the necessary skills. Some institutions practice an open-door policy and provide developmental education classes to bring their student body up to standard. Other institutions provide a conditional admittance for students dependent on their attending and passing developmental classes. <br /><br /> However, there is also a bad side to developmental education classes. Each year, the number of students enrolling in developmental level courses in postsecondary <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/education+increases" rel="tag">education increases</a>. In fact, almost 42 percent of all freshmen enrolled in public 2-year colleges were enrolled in at least one developmental course, according to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/national+center+for+education+statistics" rel="tag">National Center for Education Statistics</a>. The percentage drops if you factor in four-year programs but not as much as you would think as many public four-year programs also have significant <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/developmental+education+programs" rel="tag">developmental education programs</a> out of necessity. Many students do not take one single developmental class. They often end up taking classes in all three developmental areas -- reading, writing and math. In addition, some of these students end up taking more than one semester worth of developmental work in these areas. Sometimes because their need for remediation requires a multi-course sequence, but also because they do not pass the remedial courses the first time they attempt them. This places a significant financial burden on many students and their families as these courses lengthen the time required to earn a degree -- often adding at least a year onto the time necessary to earn a four-year degree. Most developmental education classes do not offer credit toward graduation and students cannot begin taking the credit-bearing course in that area until successfully completing the developmental class. <br /><br /> Believe it or not, there is an even uglier side to developmental education to the add to the burden of time and money. It can also be stressful on the student who may feel discouraged and unfairly labeled. Plus, while developmental course work can be a great help to many first year students, research has shown that the number of developmental courses and the kinds of developmental courses that students take makes a difference in their future success. The success of underprepared readers in college is directly and significantly related to taking and passing a reading skills course and deficiencies in reading skills are indicators of comprehensive literacy problems and they significantly lower the odds of a student's completing any degree. <br /><br /> If you or someone you care about is headed for college you need to learn more about the good, the bad, and the ugly truth about developmental education classes. <bio>Renaissance Woman Deanna Mascle shares more education articles at <a href="http://dawggone.net/" >http://dawggone.net/</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Now that your little angel has reached 7 months old. Time goes by so fast that you don't realize your baby is now able to sit upright without your support or even her own hands. Wow, that must be an incredible feeling seeing her grow so instantly. <br /><br /> For parents of 7 to 9-months-old babies, what else can you find in their physical growths? Well, every baby is not the same. One may have earlier development from the others. <br /><br /> For example, your friend's baby was able to start <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/crawling" rel="tag">crawling</a> when he was 8 months old, while yours could do it when she was seven and a half months. <br /><br /> On the other hand, the first baby started teething when he was 6 months old, whereas yours did it when she was 9 months. <br /><br /> So, you really need not to be anxious about your baby's development. She will reach the stage. <br /><br /> What you need to pay attention to is your baby's <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/developmental+milestone" rel="tag">developmental milestone</a>. This means she should be able to do certain things at particular ages. <br /><br /> It's best for you to make some notes on your baby's growth, such as writing all her new skills in an <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/online+diary" rel="tag">online diary</a>. If you do not want to miss any of your baby's growths, writing the journal will be very exciting. <br /><br /> Adding up <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cute+photos" rel="tag">cute photos</a> when new things happen will also be a wonderful endeavor. Later on, you'll thank yourself for keeping the memories online as you can see it anytime anywhere. Add up the joy by sharing the site to friends and families. <br /><br /> Now let's go back to the previous topic. If you're a first-time parent, you probably still have a little idea about your baby's development. <br /><br /> Below is a milestone you can use as your guideline. If your baby isn't on her track or doesn't reach many of the stages mentioned here, you may consult it with your baby's <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pediatrician" rel="tag">pediatrician</a>. <br /><br /> Here are some of the milestones for 7 to 9-months-old baby: <br /><br /> 1. Sitting upright without support 2. Crawling 3. Teething 4. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/babbling" rel="tag">Babbling</a> 5. Passing things from hand to hand 6. Standing up by holding onto something 7. Waving hands 8. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/clapping+hands" rel="tag">Clapping hands</a> 9. Turning heads when someone calls her 10. Holding her bottles 11. Picking objects up with pincer (thumb-finger) grasp 12. Testing your responses to her behavior 13. Able to distinguish people she knows and strangers 14. Cruising while holding onto the wall or other furniture <br /><br /> The older your baby, the more skills she may have. If your baby is not able to do some of these things, don't worry too much. It does not mean a problem. She'll reach the phase in the perfect time, soon. About The Author: Adwina Jackson is a wife and mother of a young boy. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ Many of us are often in a position to buy a gift for a baby, whether our own child, or a friend or family member's child. Often we buy the baby toy that looks fun or that we guess is developmentally appropriate. Sometimes we buy what we've seen other buy, or what we've seen relentlessly advertised. But we don't always realize that understanding a child's developmental level can help us not only pick a toy the child will enjoy, it could also pay important dividends later on. <br /><br /> In fact, understanding the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/basic+psychology" rel="tag">basic psychology</a> of child development can help you buy a baby toy that will speed the child motor, cognitive, physical, or emotional development. <br /><br /> Here is an example: <br /><br /> The great researcher Piaget believed that children progress through the following developmental stages: <br /><br /> 1. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/sensorimotor+stage" rel="tag">Sensorimotor stage</a> (birth - 2 years old). During this developmental stage, the child begins to understand his or her world and how things work. This is the stage where a child does not know that physical objects remain in existence even when out of sight (also called <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/object+permanence" rel="tag">object permanence</a>). <br /><br /> 2. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/preoperational+stage" rel="tag">Preoperational stage</a> (ages 2-7). The child in this stage cannot think abstractly and needs <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/concrete+situations" rel="tag">concrete situations</a>, but does understand that objects still exist out of his or her awareness. This is a very important leap because it helps the child begin to realize the he or she is a separate being, with distinct needs, wants, and feelings. <br /><br /> Piaget believed that during these development stages, the child can advance quicker through processes called <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/assimilation+and+accommodation" rel="tag">assimilation and accommodation</a>. In short what these processes suggest is that a baby who is younger than two years-old can be taught to progress to the next developmental stage quicker than he would have otherwise through specific learning and training fostered by the parent. The choice of appropriate developmentally appropriate toys and playthings can make this learning fun! <br /><br /> So, for example, a developmentally appropriate baby toy for an 18 month old might be a peek-a-boo game or an open-the-<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/flap+book" rel="tag">flap book</a>. These toys might speed the child's progression toward the Preoperational stage by allowing the child to assimilate what he or she is seeing from the toy into a larger understanding of object permanence in the world. <br /><br /> This was just one example of how your generous baby gift can do more that give a child hours of enjoyment. You can actually speed a child's social, emotional, and cognitive development by choosing a developmentally appropriate baby toy. <bio>For more information about developmentally appropraite baby toys and gifts, baby showers, and infant and child development, please go to <a href="http://www.baby-center.co.uk" >http://www.baby-center.co.uk</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autism+spectrum+disorder" rel="tag">Autism spectrum disorder</a> is basically a wide range of behavioral and developmental disorders that results from a combination of certain traits. The autism spectrum disorder will range from low functioning autism to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/high+functioning+autism" rel="tag">high functioning autism</a> to normal behavior and to possibly hyper socialization. <br /><br /> An autism spectrum disorder is considered to be a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/persuasive+developmental+disorder" rel="tag">persuasive developmental disorder</a>, which basically means that it interferes with a child's normal developmental abilities such as communication and speech. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autism+spectrum+disorders" rel="tag">Autism spectrum disorders</a> are not specific developmental disorders such as <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dyslexia" rel="tag">dyslexia</a>. It is important to note that many people who have this disorder usually end up living in dire poverty. <br /><br /> The Affected Areas Of Functioning <br /><br /> This disorder is considered to be both a psychological and a developmental disorder that affects many areas of functioning. These areas will include language, motor coordination, self-help skills, communication and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/scholastic+achievements" rel="tag">scholastic achievements</a>. With some individuals, the symptoms may be it immediately <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/noticeable" rel="tag">noticeable</a>, while in others; the symptoms may not be noticeable at all when first meeting that individual. <br /><br /> Surprisingly, many people that are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder lead very normal lives. In fact, many people with this disorder may lead a very normal life and are not noticed until later on in their adolescence or well into their adulthood lives. These disorders are usually diagnosed following a series of psychiatric tests. <br /><br /> Not Really Disabled After All <br /><br /> It is vital to let people know that people who were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder are not "disabled". What makes them different from every one else is their thought process. There are many different degrees of severity that no 2 people are really alike. <br /><br /> Individuals with and autism spectrum disorder may have a little challenge interacting with other normal children, as well as trend to keep up scholastically. In all depends on the severity. Some individuals with this disorder may not read as well or comprehend as fast Ward to as well on tests as other children. These same individuals may also have a challenge try to socialize successfully. The reason for this is due to the fact that their brains process and store information differently from normal children. <br /><br /> Learning is Key to Understanding <br /><br /> As parents and caregivers the best thing we can do is to educate ourselves about the various degrees of autism spectrum disorders. Other people in the individual's life such as teachers, siblings and friends should also become involved in the learning process too. Some individuals have shown that with intense therapy and practice, they are able to " fit in" and socialize normally with the outside world. By doing the best that we can to learn all that we can about this disorder, we become better equipped to help deal with those who have it. Admittedly, it does take a lot of patience as well as practice and guidance dealing with people with autism spectrum disorder. The good news is that some of these people with autism spectrum disorder can go on to live a normal and productive life and contribute to society. <bio>Kerry Ng is a successful Webmaster and publisher of The Autism Info Blog. <content:encoded><![CDATA[Would you like to help your children be able to figure things out? How would you feel about giving your child the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/perfect+toys" rel="tag">perfect toys</a> so that they can think logically and solve problems on their own? Maybe your goal is to help your children by developing their visual differentiation skills. <br /><br /> You can succeed in all of these areas when you provide classic <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/educational+toys" rel="tag">educational toys</a> for your children. Instead of giving your children toys that are no fun when the batteries give out or the music stops playing, give them matching and memory games (<a href="http://www.1888toys.com/index.asp?PageAction=PRODSEARCHandtxtSearch=memoryandPage=1" >http://www.1888toys.com/index.asp?PageAction=PRODSEARCHandtxtSearch=memoryandPage=1</a>), developmental <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/toddler+games" rel="tag">toddler games</a> or toddler <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/dominoes+games" rel="tag">dominoes games</a>. You can even find baby <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/puzzle+games" rel="tag">puzzle games</a> for very young children. <br /><br /> Baby puzzle games give babies the opportunity to start figuring things out at an early age. When a parent, grandparent or sibling spends time with a child and a puzzle game (<a href="http://www.1888toys.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATSandCategory=53" >http://www.1888toys.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATSandCategory=53</a>) it will not be long before the child starts to recognize the way it works. <br /><br /> Developmental toddler games are not only fun but they can help children learn many different skills. The games focus on things like memory skills and logical thinking. <br /><br /> These are all important skills that children need. These skills are not being developed by many of the toys on the market today. As a parent you may want to do a little research into the area of children's toys. If you are going to spend money on toys it would be beneficial to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/purchase+toys" rel="tag">purchase toys</a> that will help your child with necessary areas of learning. <br /><br /> Child care centers and preschools should also stock these games. If your child attends a daycare, child care center, preschool or church nursery you may want to find out if classic educational toys are part of the items that are on hand and used on a regular basis. <br /><br /> You will help your child figure it out when you give them toys that help them with logical thinking, problem solving and visual differentiation skills development. <bio>Marina Neiman, author and mother of two, writes for <a href="http://1888Toys.com" >http://1888Toys.com</a> -- Children Educational Toys Store, featuring classic toys with truly developmental value. <content:encoded><![CDATA[Autism is a condition that can be treated, this is the prime reason why in suspected <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autism+cases" rel="tag">autism cases</a> it is best that the diagnose be made earlier than later, it must be pointed out however that <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autistic+behavior" rel="tag">autistic behavior</a> is not a frequent thing among health communities and families, so this should not be a major concern for parents. Nevertheless it is always recommended to use experts to establish some kind of diagnosis as regards to behavioral abnormalities. <br /><br /> One of the many essential features concerned with children of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autistic+disorder" rel="tag">autistic disorder</a> is their tendency to create odd interests and poor attention and focus. Additionally, they also deficit in social interaction. Most authorities in this subject affirm that these features clearly indicate autistic factors yet they admit that these are not enough to diagnose autism among children younger than 3 years old. <br /><br /> Moreover, the inconsistency of symptom manifestation often hampers the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/proper+diagnosis" rel="tag">proper diagnosis</a> of autism more than the abnormality itself. There are virtually lots of factors affecting this inconsistency. <br /><br /> Autism can also be correlated with other conditions such as mental retardation, childhood psychoses, Asperger disorder and a couple of other <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/neurological+disorders" rel="tag">neurological disorders</a>. <br /><br /> Often, diagnosis begins through these three determining factors. Keep in mind though that evaluation of these three stages would not suffice the data so as to conclude that a child truly has <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autistic+features" rel="tag">autistic features</a>. <br /><br /> Physical and neurological examinations Examination of medical history including those that manifest through relatives. This also consists of birth history and developmental conditions, and Medical tests to help rule out other diseases <br /><br /> Diagnostic criteria are used to formally determine if a child is truly subjected to autistic features. Comprehensive diagnosis can be done through routine developmental screening which concerns mostly all developmental features that are absent or deficient with <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autistic+children" rel="tag">autistic children</a>. <br /><br /> After the recognition of these factors, the child may be given audiologic evaluation, screening test for autism and blood lead test. <br /><br /> During evaluation it is vital that the children are diagnosed by an experienced clinician. He must be well-learned with concerns pertaining to psychology and pediatrics. <br /><br /> For an initial evaluation, you as a parent can do the following: <br /><br /> Observation on social impairment which manifests through the following: a. impairment of non-verbal interaction b. weak ability to build peer relationship as observed during different developmental stages c. lack of emotional and social reciprocity which is prone to isolation <br /><br /> Observation on communicational impairment which manifests through the following: a.delay or lack of development in language facilities, more specifically the spoken language b.lack of social plays suitable for each developmental stage c.inability to maintain social conversation d.idiosyncratic language or marked repetitive use of words <br /><br /> Noticeable patterns of activities, behaviors and interests manifested through the following: a.continuous preoccupation with specific parts of an object b.motor mannerism c.limited patterns of interests d.observance of rituals or non-functional habits <br /><br /> Due of course to the difficulty of diagnosing autistic features, it is best to subject the child to professional evaluation. It is not as easy though as with other diseases so be patient with findings means for efficient and effective diagnosis. <bio>Jonathan Mayheart has been writing and publishing his articles on the internet for a few months, he currently writes about health, mental problems and their cultural and personal effects at <a href="http://www.autism.advice-tips.com/" >http://www.autism.advice-tips.com/</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Even though teething a milestone for your little one, it is several months of irritation for mother and baby. This fun begins around 3 or 4 months of age and continues up to 3 years. Below is approximate times of when new teeth may start to come in. <br /><br /> 6 to 7 months; <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/incisors" rel="tag">Incisors</a>; Two central bottom and Two central top teeth 7 to 9 months; Two more incisors; Top and bottom 10 to 14 months; First <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/molars" rel="tag">molars</a>; Double teeth for chewing 15 to 18 months; Canines; The <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pointed+teeth" rel="tag">pointed teeth</a> or "fangs" 2 to 3 years; Second molars; Second set of double teeth at the back <br /><br /> By their third birthday, most children should have all twenty of their <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/primary+teeth" rel="tag">primary teeth</a>. <br /><br /> Teething is relatively painless for babies, but it is uncomfortable. Many parents think their baby has teething symptoms, when in fact it may be something else. Here are the most common symptoms: <br /><br /> * * Irritability * * Restlessness/difficulty sleeping * * Increased saliva * * Drooling * * Desire to chew on everything within grasping distance <br /><br /> Other signs that can be seen in the baby's mouth include swollen, tender gums where a new tooth is coming through. <br /><br /> If your baby is teething and it is really bothering them, there are things you can do to ease the irritation. One thing I used with my son was a teether. There are many different types of teethers. I used one that resembled a set of keys; it was his favorite. Another type that he enjoyed was a chilled, not frozen, teething ring. <br /><br /> When you see that first tooth, all the irritation will be well worth it. **************** About The Author **************** Debra Slater: With over 25 years of experience in the baby related industry, <a href="http://HappyMothers.com">http://HappyMothers.com</a> and <a href="http://MommysLittleBaby.com">http://MommysLittleBaby.com</a> has the most experienced and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/knowledgeable+sales+staff" rel="tag">knowledgeable sales staff</a>. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ If you are in the midst of searching for the type of homeschooling that is right for you and your children you are most likely have run into various options such as Classical, Montessori, and another popular method called Waldorf. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/waldorf+education" rel="tag">Waldorf education</a> has its roots in a gentleman named <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rudolf+steiner" rel="tag">Rudolf Steiner</a>. Rudolf Steiner was an Austrian scientist who had a philosophy about developmental stages that ended up created what we now know as the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/waldorf+method" rel="tag">Waldorf method</a> of homeschooling. His basis for his thinking revolved around his beliefs that man is made of three parts; his spirit, his soul, and his body. Throughout the developmental cycle, Waldorf identified three states; early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. <br /><br /> It was only when Rudolf Steiner was asked to lead a school for the children of the workers in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/waldorf+astoria" rel="tag">Waldorf Astoria</a> cigarette factory that he solidified his philosophies into a teaching technique that used in public schools throughout America and has gained popularity in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/homeschooling+movement" rel="tag">homeschooling movement</a>. <br /><br /> Waldorf education is simple in that day in and day out, the child learns with his head, heart, and hands. All exercises involved in the Waldorf education have these three elements worked into them in the hope to cultivate a love of learning in the student. <br /><br /> This method of homeschooling in unique in the fact that is attempts to bring life to education and every subject your child will encounter! Remember that it is always best to research more into the type of home schooling that you are thinking of adopting for you and your children. Also, if during your research you find that you may not want to follow through with the Waldorf method, don't worry, there are plenty more methods and I'm sure one or a combination of a few will be sure to work. Remember, this is a bid decision, its okay to do some research. <bio>Carol is highly involved in the details of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/waldorf+school" rel="tag">Waldorf School</a> and Waldorf Education. <a href="http://www.homeschooljewel.com" >http://www.homeschooljewel.com</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autism" rel="tag">Autism</a> is a developmental disorder that is difficult for many <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/parents" rel="tag">parents</a> to manage. <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autistic+children" rel="tag"><a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autistic+child" rel="tag">Autistic child</a>ren</a> often display <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/aggressive+behaviors" rel="tag">aggressive behaviors</a> out of frustration and an inability to communicate and function within social norms. <br /><br /> Autism develops early in a child's life. Parents and caregivers may notice significant changes in the behavior of a child early on. Suddenly, there is a developmental problem. Children lose language skills they have already developed and often push other people away. <br /><br /> Aggressive behaviors are difficult to cope with, especially for the parents and loved ones of autistic children. Imagine someone you pour all your love into physically turning on you, and for no apparent reason. It is a devastating experience for many parents, but it is just a fact of dealing with autism. <br /><br /> If you are the parent of an aggressive autistic child it is possible that you will be subjected to violent tantrums. Sometimes an autistic child hurts himself and other times, he may hurt those around him. The inability to properly communicate and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/assimilate" rel="tag">assimilate</a> the world around him may cause intense frustration. In addition, many autistic children are incapable of correctly perceiving the world around them that they may feel as though they have no connection to their body. This can cause them to act out violently -- although their intent is not to injure others. <br /><br /> Other times, their intent may be to lash out. Parents and caregivers have to understand the root cause of this behavior and take the vantage point that it is 'nothing personal'. An autistic child has difficulties controlling his behavior and lacks developmental markers that make self-control possible. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fortunately" rel="tag">Fortunately</a>, there are many resources available for you to learn about how to cope with aggressive behavior. In addition, there are support groups for parents and family members of autistic children. These groups can be highly valuable in teaching coping skills. Many parents in some way or another choose to blame themselves but when they get together with others going through the same trials and tribulations it becomes easier to maintain a clearer perspective on the situation. <br /><br /> Another option available is to see a psychologist. Psychologists provide an avenue in which parents can discuss their problems with a mental health professional that can provide an emotional and scientific perspective on the situation. <br /><br /> There are also lectures on the subject that can prove a valuable resource. Many experts in the field of autism present at conferences and discuss coping strategies. If you can attend it's a great idea to go to these conferences whenever possible to gain further expert advice on the situation and to meet others who are experiencing the exact same thing as you are. <br /><br /> The most important thing to remember is that your child loves you. It may be difficult for him to show you his love at times, but this does not mean there is no genuine love. <br /><br /> Aggression and violent behavior is common for many autistic children and it is simply a consequence of the developmental difficulties autistic children face. <br /><br /> Autism is difficult to deal with for many parents. Even though it may be emotionally stressful at times, it is important that you keep a cool head during violent outbursts. Chances are that your child cannot control the situation, so the burden falls upon you to be the one in control. <bio>Rachel Evans has an interest in Autism. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/potty+training" rel="tag">Potty training</a> is a major milestone for a toddler. We had bought a book called "<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/once+upon+a+potty" rel="tag">Once Upon a Potty</a>" for his first birthday and he enjoyed reading about Joshua using the potty. My mother bought him a DVD called "I Gotta Go!" which he enjoyed watching and singing along. My mother bought my son a potty when he was around 1.5 years old and I started sitting him on it from time to time. <br /><br /> But none of those things got him to use the potty <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/everytime" rel="tag">everytime</a>. The trick with him was M and Ms. I had talked to another mom at <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/kindermusik" rel="tag">Kindermusik</a> about how she got her son to go to the potty (he was a year younger than my son). She said she started giving him M and Ms everytime he went to the potty. When we got home, I started using her suggestion. You know what, my son started using the potty everytime the same day. Amazing! Within a couple of weeks, I stopped using the M and Ms and he kept using the potty. <br /><br /> Every child is different and they are all ready when they're ready. Here is a small list of some of the signs they are ready: <br /><br /> 1. 1. Able to understand and follow simple directions. 2. 2. Has bowel movements at regular times every day. 3. 3. Able to remain dry for about two hours at a time. 4. 4. Has a name for urine and bowel movement. <br /><br /> Most articles I read said that most toddlers are ready between 18 and 24 months, but it is not uncommon for some children to still be in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/diapers" rel="tag">diapers</a> until they are 3 years old. And really, they don't have to be in diapers. There are training <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/underwear" rel="tag">underwear</a> available for toddlers that are more like underwear, but have diaper protection. That's what we used with our son until he would tell us everytime he had to go potty. <br /><br /> Of course, he is no longer using his potty; he has graduated to the big potty with a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/potty+seat" rel="tag">potty seat</a>. He feels like such a big kid using the big potty and no longer wears training underwear at night. He wakes himself up to go potty. He is always proud of himself when he doesn't have any accidents at night. <br /><br /> Potty training is not easy, and it takes alot of patience and understanding from us parents to help our little ones reach this milestone. Just take it slow and you'll find the magic trick to help your toddler too. <bio>Debra Slater: With over 25 years of experience in the baby related industry, <a href="http://HappyMothers.com">http://HappyMothers.com</a> and <a href="http://MommysLittleBaby.com">http://MommysLittleBaby.com</a> has the most experienced and knowledgeable sales staff. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autism" rel="tag">Autism</a> is a neurological, developmental disorder, which can inhibit the normal developmental growth of individuals. Symptoms of autism include impairments in social skills, as well as communication skills, repetitive behaviors, and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/poor+speech" rel="tag">poor speech</a> patterns. Because the severity of the symptoms will vary, some individuals diagnosed with autism may be able to live on their own, while others become totally reliant on someone to care for them. While there have been theories that autism may be caused by <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/immunizations" rel="tag">immunizations</a>, there has been no scientific data found to link the two together. <br /><br /> Research has been conducted to find a connection between autism and immunizations and research will be continued to discover what causes this damaging disorder. However, none of the data collected, from the research conducted so far, has been able to prove this theory. The National Childhood Encephalopathy Study was investigated in 1997. The study was to find a connection between neurological function and the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/measles+vaccine" rel="tag">measles vaccine</a>. Researchers did not find any connection between the two and if anything, only confirmed that the measles vaccine did not contribute to any <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/neurological+disorders" rel="tag">neurological disorders</a> or dysfunction. <br /><br /> Several other studies done over the course of the next nine years were also conducted to find the link between immunizations and autism. Again, none of these have shown as strong link between the two. One of these studies, conducted in 1998 by Wakefield and colleagues, suggested that the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mmr+vaccine" rel="tag">MMR vaccine</a> caused intestinal <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/abnormalities" rel="tag">abnormalities</a> and developmental regression in children within a few weeks of receiving the MMR. <br /><br /> However, this study had its problems, including the fact that only 12 children were used in the study, they did not use any healthy children for control subjects, and at least 4 out of the 12 children involved had behavioral problems before they experienced any symptoms of bowel abnormalities. Due to the fact that so much was wrong with the research, many of the researches retracted their opinions of the results and none of the results gained can be used as supporting evidence. <br /><br /> What does all of this mean? Generally, for any theory to be proved, scientific data must point one toward the answer. None of the research conducted in trying to find a link has been proven. Many studies are going on that are following the theory that autism is linked to a genetic abnormality. <br /><br /> Recently, a study was conducted on over 30,000 Japanese children, born in Yokohama between 1988 and 1996, that has really taken hold as proof that there is no connection between the MMR and autism. Basically, what this study shows is that even after the MMR was replaced with single vaccines, the number of children diagnosed with autism has continued to rise. What this means is that parents should no longer be worried they are putting their children in danger when they get the MMR. <br /><br /> The fact is that throughout the years of research, not one study can prove that there is a link between the triple immunization, MMR, and autism. The research will continue, however, for the cause of autism in the hope that we will not just find a cause, but a cure, as well. <bio>Rachel Evans. <content:encoded><![CDATA[ Regardless of the face that <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/homeschool" rel="tag">homeschool</a>ing" rel="tag">homeschooling</a> has gained popularity in the last 10 years, there are still very many of backers for community school ready and willing to provide their arguments and reasons to their neighborhood mom that has established to homeschool. As with any basis, there are two sides. I'm not here to charm you in <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/one+direction" rel="tag">one direction</a> or another, in any case I would like to educate you with some of the arguments and let you choose for yourself. <br /><br /> It's not so hard to sort out some of the apprehension that could come with homeschooling. <br /><br /> Here are some of the top reasons against homeschooling: <br /><br /> 1. Lack of Social Interaction: This is the largest disagreement when talking to the public about <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/home+schooling" rel="tag">home schooling</a>. We live in a social world and social skills are hugely eminent in being able to successfully go through living. Kids who are isolated all week in their homes with little social <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/contact" rel="tag">contact</a> risk not understanding how to deal with surplus communities that have different views than them or even be acquainted with a agreeable conversation. <br /><br /> 2. Lack of Records: All the same most of us wouldn't got back to grade junior high school if someone paid us, anyhow, it was these records out on the playground during recess, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/middle+school+dances" rel="tag">middle school dances</a>, and even the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/canned+food+drives" rel="tag">canned food drives</a> that were vital materials of what shapes children in their developmental years. Homeschooled youngsters are stripped of these historic events and it can negatively impact their developmental years. <br /><br /> 3. Lack of Curriculum: Regardless there are very acceptable homeschool elements, there's no way a parent can forge a entire schooling year that is at all similar to the value a schoolteacher can in a kindergarten class with a vide range of resources and their fingertips. <br /><br /> When trying to opt whether or not homeschooling is direct for you, its good to take account of both sides of the fence. These are just a few of the motives against homeschooling. These are some very relevant concerns, mull over them, analysis them, and assemble the commitment that's promptly for you and the rest of your family. <bio>Carol knows Disadvantages of Home Schooling and why there are Home Schooling Disadvantages. <content:encoded><![CDATA[As if there was not enough confusion in the area of healthy eating, now we are faced with the fact that fish is either really good for you, or it is going to really get you sick. Recent research has shown that eating larger amounts of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fish+and+shellfish" rel="tag">fish and shellfish</a> can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease. A recent report out of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/harvard+school+of+public+health" rel="tag">Harvard School of Public Health</a> has indicated that increased <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fish+consumption" rel="tag">fish consumption</a> can reduce the risk of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/death+from+heart+disease" rel="tag">death from heart disease</a> by as much as 35%. This is the kind of news that makes the owners of Red Lobster Restaurants happy, and at the very least should have us all heading out to Captain D's, but before you start munching down those fishfillet sandwiches you might want to keep reading. <br /><br /> There is a significant risk of exposure to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/methyl+mercury" rel="tag">methyl mercury</a> contamination in fish. This is a heavy metal that is not only linked to learning disabilities and developmental delays in children, but you guessed it, also is linked to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/heart+damage" rel="tag">heart damage</a> in adults. It is also linked to nerve and kidney damage, but hey, once the old ticker goes that is not going to matter all that much. <br /><br /> We also have some confusion in regard to feeding fish to our kids. As was already mentioned the methyl mercury causes developmental delays, but the omega-3 fatty acids and some of the other key nutrients in fish have been shown to contribute to accelerated brain development in infants. I guess that this is really a balance issue. The good stuff gets the brain going, and the bad stuff holds it back. The net result is a normal brain? And a kid that is not as hungry. Adults might see the issue the same way. Eating fish is going to protect your heart to some degree, and damage it at the same time resulting in no change. Meanwhile you get to enjoy that Cajun baked trout! <bio>Find more articles on health and nutrition at our free article site: <a href="http://www.webiar.com/Category/Health/4" >http://www.webiar.com/Category/Health/4</a> <a href="http://www.webiar.com/Category/Nutrition/191" >http://www.webiar.com/Category/Nutrition/191</a> <a href="http://www.webiar.com" >http://www.webiar.com</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[The expression '<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/developmental+disability" rel="tag">developmental disability</a>' stands for the kind of impairment that interferes with a person's ability to perform one or more vital functions of life. Since such disabilities are of extremely serious nature, they might adversely affect the affected person's ability to earn an independent living. Autism is one of such disabilities. <br /><br /> In an <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autistic+child" rel="tag">autistic child</a>, the symptoms are quite visible right from the time when he or she is three years old. <br /><br /> In most of the cases, these kids have difficulty speaking and cannot speak clearly. An autistic child is much of loner and does not enjoy playing with other children. He prefers to stay alone and play all alone. They often confine themselves to a small corner and keep playing their very <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/own+games" rel="tag">own games</a>, which might look very strange to an outsider. <br /><br /> They do not light bright light or loud noise, and if subjected to such disturbances, they might react rather violently. <br /><br /> Many a time, when you are speaking to them, they wouldn't even pay attention to what you are saying. You might take them for deaf. But they are not essentially deaf. Chances are that they would not pay any attention to what you are saying for a very long time and then suddenly react to your talk with a smile or even a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/hearty+laugh" rel="tag">hearty laugh</a>, or by simply saying something in reply to what you said. They may not even respond to the sound of their own names at times. But then, on other occasion you might find them looking <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/bang+in+your+face" rel="tag">bang in your face</a> if you called them by their names. <br /><br /> The basic reason for their not responding is not that they do not 'hear' but that they are too self-immersed to take note of what you said. At such occasions they cut the external inputs out and take no cognizance of what is being spoken. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/autistic+children" rel="tag">Autistic children</a> are difficult to manage because of their <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/unpredictable+behavior" rel="tag">unpredictable behavior</a>. They might be an impressive picture of tolerance on one occasion while on the other you might find them extremely irritable and short tempered. <br /><br /> The best way to get along with them is to be patient, receptive and willing. So, far there is no cure for autism. Therefore, all that we can do is wait. Wait, patiently. <bio>The author writes about a number of different topics. <content:encoded><![CDATA[In our society, there are a lot of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/occasions" rel="tag">occasions</a> when we give individuals gifts. Sometimes, it is important to make that gift a special memento, and one of the best ways to do this is to give a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/personalized+gift" rel="tag">personalized gift</a>. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/personalized+gifts" rel="tag">Personalized gifts</a> are very appropriate for rare occasions. Most gift-giving occasions are special, but a few symbolize particularly rare or hard-to-accomplish events. These occasions include graduations, weddings, births, and milestone anniversaries. <br /><br /> Graduation from a college or university carries a very different connotation than graduating from high school. Graduating from high school is a big event in a teenager's life, and most <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/parents" rel="tag">parents</a> will get the graduate a large gift to mark the occasion. Most of the time, the gift will mark the celebratory atmosphere of release that goes with the graduation. People other than the parents might want to give the grad a personalized gift in the form of a pen or a book in token of the grad's achievement. <br /><br /> Graduation from university or college is a different matter. The student who is graduating from a higher institution is marking a more somber event, a path that was taken by choice and whose ultimate realization comes only years of very hard work. University <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/graduation+gifts" rel="tag">graduation gifts</a> tend to reflect the more somber tone of the event, and a personalized gift that includes the name of the graduate, the date, and the name of the giver will be held close for a very long time. <br /><br /> Personalized gifts for weddings are usually given by the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/bride+and+groom" rel="tag">bride and groom</a> to members of their wedding parties or to people who made a special contribution to the event. The gifts are usually engraved with the name of the receiver, the bride and groom, and the wedding date. Some good ideas for groomsmen include engrave pint mugs or tool sets. Bridesmaids can receive a bracelet, necklace piece, or commemorative plate. People thinking about giving personalized gifts in recognition of wedding help should also consider gifts for their parents, the Master of Ceremonies, and anyone who contributed music for the ceremony (and was not hired to do so). <br /><br /> The birth of a new baby always includes an abundance of personalized gifts with the baby's name and date of birth on them. These little gifts will always be treasured by the parents, long after the little one has outgrown them. Some good ideas are little decorated pillows on which the baby's information can be recorded in thread, baby spoons with the name engraved, or sleepers with the baby's name on them. <br /><br /> The celebration of a milestone anniversary is another time where it is highly appropriate to personalize your gift to the couple. Picture frames and commemorative plates are especially appropriate, and should have the names of the couple and their original wedding date, as well as the year of the anniversary, engraved upon them. The big milestone is usually considered the 50th, although the 60th is actually the diamond anniversary. <br /><br /> There is no better way of demonstrating that you care about someone or to say thank-you than to personalize your gift. It is a special demonstration of affection, and it will also be more highly valued by the receiver as it is clear that thought went into the giving process. <bio>copyright©2006 personalizedgiftguide.com Visit for more <a href="<a href="http://www.personalizedgiftguide.com">http://www.personalizedgiftguide.com</a>/articles"><a href="http://www.personalizedgiftguide.com">http://www.personalizedgiftguide.com</a>/articles</a> articles, <a href="http://www.personalizedgiftguide.com">http://www.personalizedgiftguide.com</a> and custom embroidered gift resources. </bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ Potty training is a major <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/developmental+milestone" rel="tag">developmental milestone</a> for children. Some reach potty training readiness before others. Many parents <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/experience+anxiety" rel="tag">experience anxiety</a> over potty training problems. Before you begin a potty training program, know the facts. <br /><br /> Facts about Potty Training <br /><br /> =95 Most children are potty trained between the ages of two and four. Some are ready sooner; others take longer and may not be ready to potty train until age five. <br /><br /> =95 Children should be at least 20 months old before potty training begins. A child must be able to walk to the bathroom, pull his or her pants on and off, and pick up small objects. <br /><br /> =95 A child that urinates eight to ten times a day is not ready for potty training. The child must be able to stay dry for several hours and wet a diaper only four to seven times a day in order for training to be effective. <br /><br /> =95 Children that are prone to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/temper+tantrums" rel="tag">temper tantrums</a>, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/willful+acts" rel="tag">willful acts</a> of disobeying, and inattentiveness may not be ready for <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/toilet+training" rel="tag">toilet training</a>. <br /><br /> =95 Kids approaching readiness for toilet training are aware of the need to relieve their bowels and bladder. They may voice this need, tug at clothing, or bring you a clean diaper. <br /><br /> Beginning Training <br /><br /> =95 When your child is ready, let him practice pulling his pants on and off independently. Provide a step stool, potty seat insert, or child's potty-chair. Teach him about <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/proper+hygiene" rel="tag">proper hygiene</a> and flushing the toilet. <br /><br /> =95 Children learn quickly by watching a parent or sibling use the toilet. <br /><br /> =95 Provide simple, systematic instructions. Also provide lavish praise when your child performs a request correctly. <br /><br /> =95 Tell the child to go potty every hour. Even if they do not go, it raises their awareness of bowel and bladder conditions. <br /><br /> =95 Boys should sit to urinate until toilet training is well underway. Aiming a stream of urine takes considerable skill and is for advanced toilet training. <br /><br /> =95 Separate your toilet training into daytime and nighttime sessions. It is common for bedwetting to occur for months, if not years, after a child is potty trained. Focus on daytime training first. <br /><br /> =95 Training pants are for nighttime only. This allows your child to feel uncomfortable when an accident occurs. It motivates him to attempt to make it to the potty when the urge to urinate or defecate arises. <br /><br /> =95 Check your child at regular intervals. Praise him or her for having dry pants each time. <br /><br /> =95 Consider rewarding your child with a special treat such as a favorite cookie for each successful potty experience. <br /><br /> =95 Placing O-shaped cereal in the toilet can help little boys learn to aim a stream of urine. <br /><br /> Toilet training should not begin during periods of stress or illness. Plan to stick close to home during this time. Scope out the location of bathrooms each time you leave home. Never scold a child for needing a toilet at an inconvenient time. <br /><br /> If your child shows resistance to your first toilet training attempts, simply go back to training pants or diapers until your child is ready. <content:encoded><![CDATA[If you're a smoker and you want to quit, are there any "best" ways to quit smoking? In a word, no. There is only the method or perhaps combination of methods that will work best for you. Nonetheless, there are some popular techniques that work will help you quit if you want to.<br><br>Now, first of all, no method is going to work for you unless you truly want to quit. That includes hypnosis, by the way. Even though hypnosis can be very powerful and can help you quit via the power of suggestion, it's only a temporary move and will only work as it should if your desire is there. In short, even with hypnosis, nobody can make you do something you don't want to do for very long.<br><br>That said, perhaps some of the most effective methods for quitting smoking include those that use <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nicotine+replacement" rel="tag">nicotine replacement</a>. This is because there is a psychological component to <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nicotine+addiction" rel="tag">nicotine addiction</a>, true. However, there's also very much a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/physical+addiction" rel="tag">physical addiction</a> to nicotine itself. By supplying small amount of nicotine through a medium that's not a cigarette, you can take the edge off cravings and work on your psychological <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cigarette+addiction" rel="tag">cigarette addiction</a> (which can be every bit as powerful as the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/physical+craving" rel="tag">physical craving</a> for nicotine), then address <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/physical+cravings" rel="tag">physical cravings</a> gradually as you remove nicotine entirely from your body.<br><br>Another one of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/best+ways+to+quit+smoking" rel="tag">best ways to quit smoking</a>, as mentioned previously, is by using hypnosis. This has been found to be very effective therapy at least in the short term to get you over the worst hump when it comes to the cravings you're going to have. By making cigarettes an item that is unattractive to you, you can learn to ignore them for at least a short period of time as you clear the nicotine out of your system and work on your psychological cravings, too.<br><br>Another among the best ways to quit smoking that won't cost you any money is to buddy up with someone who wants to break his or her own bad habit. You could also enlist the help of someone who's a former smoker to be your buddy that you're going to have to be accountable to. If you have someone to be accountable to as you work through your cravings and resist them, you're much less likely to slip up and have "just one cigarette." And unless a friend or spouse who is also smoking is also absolutely committed to quitting, don't have him or her be "quit buddies" with you. This is because if one of you slips up, it's much more likely that the other one is also going to slip up and have that "just one cigarette," which leads to a pack, and so on.<br><br>Finally, one good way to give yourself a psychological boost as you are going through the quitting process is to keep track of how much money you're saving every time you DON'T buy cigarettes. Instead of just keeping mental track, it might be helpful to physically take this money and put it in a jar where you can see it grow. This can show you how much you've been spending on cigarettes, and you'll be amazed at how much you can save now. If you wish, too, you can take at least part of the money that you saved and buy yourself something you've always wanted with it once you get through the quitting process. Alternatively, of course, you can take money from your "I quit" jar every time you reach a certain milestone, such as "one month non-smoking," "two months non-smoking," and buy yourself something with it every time you reach a milestone.<br><br>In short, there are many methods to quitting smoking, and each can be the best way to quit smoking depending on who you are. Choose one, stick to it (or switch if you find the one you've chosen is not a good fit for you), and work your way toward a healthy and smoke-free life.<bio>The <a href="http://easymethodtoquitsmoking.com/">best ways to quit smoking</a>are these ways; just visit this site to know more ==> http://easymethodtoquitsmoking.com/</bio>]]></content:encoded>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[ An anniversary is the annual celebration of a couple's wedding date. In addition to the husband and wife exchanging gifts, it is customary for friends and family to present the couple with a gift in honor of their joyous celebration. For many, it is difficult to know what gift to purchase and which coordinates with the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/traditional+anniversary+gift" rel="tag">traditional anniversary gift</a> for the number of years the couple has been wed. As time has passed, a modern gift list has also been created for the individual who wishes to give a gift that is less about tradition and more about current trends. <br /><br /> Tradition suggests that the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/first+wedding+anniversary" rel="tag">first wedding anniversary</a> be honored with the gift of paper, while the modern list suggests a clock would be appropriate. For the second anniversary, the traditional gift would be cotton and the modern gift would be china. The third anniversary is said to be traditionally honored with leather, but the modern trend suggests crystal or glass. Linen remains the classic anniversary gift in celebration of four years of marriage and an appliance is considered the modern alternative. For year five, it is customary to present a gift made of wood and the trendy choice is silverware.<br /><br /><br /><br /> When a couple reaches milestone anniversaries, which are usually measured in decades, the gifts become more expensive and are designed to be as precious as the years of wedlock. Tradition suggests that a 10-year anniversary be celebrated with the gift of tin, while the modern alternative is diamond jewelry. The 15-year <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/milestone+anniversary" rel="tag">milestone anniversary</a> is traditionally honored with crystal and the modern list suggests a watch would also be appropriate. It is customary for china to be given for a 20-year anniversary, while the modern option is said to include platinum. For the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/25th+anniversary" rel="tag">25th anniversary</a>, couples are to receive silver according to both tradition and modern gift etiquette. Pearls are suggested from the traditional list for a 30-year anniversary and diamond jewelry is noted as a modern alternative.<br /><br /><br /><br /> Both the traditional and modern list offers the same suggestions for the remaining noted anniversaries. For year 35, suggested gifts are those made of coral or jade. A 40th anniversary should be celebrated with ruby, the 45th with sapphire, 50th with gold and 55th with emerald. For the 60th, 70th and 75th anniversary, diamonds remain both the traditional and modern gift option.<br /><br /><br /><br /> If you or someone you know is celebrating an anniversary, this list can be a helpful checklist to ensuring the proper gift etiquette is observed. Of course, there's no rule that says you have to purchase that which is noted, but it may point you in the right direction of the perfect gift to honor the perfect couple. <bio><a href="http://www.red3enterprises.com/" >http://www.red3enterprises.com/</a> </bio>]]></content:encoded>
