Are you looking for a way to stay fit and have fun in the winter? Consider cross-country skiing! Depending on your weight, the intensity of your skiing, and whether or not you choose to ski hills, cross country skiing may burn between 400 and 1400 calories per hour. In fact, since cross-country skiing involves a simultaneous use of the arms and legs, many exercise physiologists consider it to be the best form of aerobic exercise. The main difference between cross country Skiing and alpine or downhill skiing is that cross country skiing, the skier is attached to the ski only with the toe of the boot.. In alpine skiing, the entire boot is attached to the ski. The free heel allows cross-country skiers to climb uphill which is not very comfortable in alpine skis.

Cross-country skiing dates back to Scandinavia 4000-4500 years ago, when it was used as a method of transportation. Today, the sport is divided into two disciplines: classic skiing which uses a straight-ahead gliding motion, and ski skating which makes use of glide and edge movements similar to ice skating or roller blading.

Cross-country skiing is part of the Nordic family of sports, which include a number of exciting ways to play in the snow. Biathlon is a combination of cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship. Nordic combined combines scoring of jumping and cross-country skiing events. Ski orienteering involves a marker search on skis with the help of a compass and map.

Compared to downhill skiing, the gear used for cross-country skiing is some of the most affordable outdoor sports equipment available. You will need the following types of equipment for cross-country skiing:

- Skis with bindings attached, - Poles and boots. - Clothing suitable for cold-weather aerobic activity

Some people choose to go cross-country skiing on packed trails, while others like to ski anywhere there is snow. There is a distinct difference between skiing on packed trails and skiing andquot;off-trackandquot;. On packed surfaces your skis will have greater gliding ability and with classic tracks, you will have two grooved channels that your skis can follow. Off-track ski conditions are dependent on the weather and any previous skiers that have been in the area. However, off-track skiing can feature obstacles such as fallen trees, swollen rivers and inconsistent snow quality. This is usually not an issue in commercial cross-country ski areas, who conduct extensive trail work throughout the summer months. <bio>Raquel S. Hunter is a writer for MamasHealth.com. Where free riders and downhill bikers use four wheel bikes and ski lifts to get them to their destination, cross country bikers get to the top of the mountain by the ride.

Though free riding is very popular, the life vein of the sport has always been cross country biking. Just as cross country riders are a different breed, the bikes they ride are as well. The cross country bike is completely different in many ways from other types of mountain riding bikes. The premise for cross country riders is speed. Everything about their bikes revolve with the idea of making the bikes faster and faster. Bikes used in cross country mountain biking can be fully rigid frame, hardtails, or even full suspension frames.

Through the years, the cross over to full suspension has become very popular. The weight difference between free ride bikes and cross country bikes are considerable. You'll be extremely hard pressed to find a bike that weighs more than 24 pounds, and even that weight can be heavy. Free ride bkes weigh close to 40 pounds, which makes the difference in weight pretty close.

If you've never tried cross country mountain biking, you'll probably find it to be a break from the ordinary. Even though this type of biking involves trails, it's normally the type of terrain that beginners wouldn't want to ride. Involving hills and rough terrain, cross country biking offers quite the rush.

For mountain bikers everywhere, cross country is the way to go. It offers you a new assortment of bikes, new areas to bike, and a new twist to mountain biking as you know it.

If you've been looking for a mountain biking rush, cross country mountain biking is what you need to be experiencing. <bio>Andy Manifield is the owner of http://on-mountain-biking.com, THE best source of information on the subject.
As flights to Europe become cheaper and as the pound becomes stronger there are an increasing number of people deciding to go off on Ski Holidays. Traditionally skiing had been restricted to the wealthy but there are an increasing number of young people that can now afford to have a skiing break. Ski holidays are attracting a new audience. When I started skiing I was daunted by the variety of types of different ski activities and was afraid to ask. Here is a brief introduction to the different types of skiing that are out there.

Skiing is not just about hammering down the slopes in the fastest time possible. Alpine freestyle focuses on finesse and performing tricks on the slopes. It has been referred to as acrobatics on skis. Skiers use jumps and rails to perform aerial tricks that are similar to those performed in urban areas on skateboards.

Cross country or Nordic Skiing is a type of skiing that is performed worldwide. It is probably the most prevalent form of skiing as it does not require a special ski area, it can therefore be performed anywhere that has snow. Cross country skis are long and thin to help distribute the weight of the skier. Cross country skiers often use their ski poles to propel themselves along as well pushing the skis sideways in a technique similar to ice skating.

People off on their ski holidays may be presented with the opportunity to attempt ski jumping. Ski jumping or Nordic jumping is a competitive sport that involves the skier travelling down a specially constructed ski ramp and off a jump at the end in an attempt to achieve a further distance than the competitors. The ski jumper uses specially designed skis that are wider and longer than normal skis.

Off-Piste or Randonee skiing is when a skier leaves the marked runs or Pistes in search of freshly dropped snow. It is an activity that is done by advanced skiers. This is because the skier is never fully aware of the types of terrain they will face and have to be competent enough to deal with an enormous variety of situations. The skier may travel to areas that are prone to avalanches and as a result the practice is banned at many US ski resorts. It is legal everywhere but ski resorts will offer advice on where to avoid. It is strongly recommended that you adhere to this advice.

Telemark skiing utilises flexible ski boots that do are not attached to the skis at the heel. Named after the Telemark region of Norway and dates back to 1868 when the father of modern skiing Sandre Norheim used this type of binding when he competed in a ski jump competition. Since then alpine ski fittings have gradually replaced the telemark system as the telemark skis are better suited to rolling terrain than the steeper downhill runs. Telemark skiing is physically more demanding than Alpine skiing.

As well as being a recreational activity for civilians, skiing is also utilised as a training activity for the military. Warfare has also taken place on skis and ski troops have played a key role in military activity. Records were made of ski warfare as early as the thirteenth century. More recently ski troops helped Finland remain independent from Russia during the Winter War. They also helped repel the German forces during the Lapland War. <bio>Shaun Parker has been an avid skier for many years. He shares his knowledge to help advise people off on their ski holidays.
If you are looking for a great way to please your family, a ski vacation is the right choice. Ski vacations are relaxing for the family and you can enjoy the various winter sport activities like skiing, snowboarding, sledding and tubing.

Winter holidays are extremely popular in the state of Maine. Sugarloaf, located on Sugarloaf Mountain is a ski resort that appeals to every member of the family. The Sugarloaf resort has a grand history of winter sports. In 1951, the Bigelow Boys created the first ski trail on Sugarloaf Mountain. Today, the trail is a premier ski area, second in elevation to Mount Katahdin, the highest mountain in Maine. This Ski area is a favorite among all the United States winter sport athletes.

Cannon Mountain is very popular among ski enthusiasts too. Located in New Hampshire, Cannon Mountain is the home of the New England Ski Museum. A haunt for all winter sports lovers, the museum contains an extensive collection of historical ski equipment, literature, films, clothing, photographs and artwork. The museum is officially recognized by the United States Ski Association as a regional museum and is recommended by scholars and historians for its extensive and rare archives.

A Ski vacation can never be complete, without a trip to the Canadian Alps. Its snow-clad cliffs offer thrills that are every skier's delight. Blue Mountain that lies on the south of Georgian Bay in Ontario is Canada's largest skiing arena in the province. The resort offers a range of six chair lifts. Enjoy your visit to Blue Mountain for a fantastic and unique experience.

Whiteface Mountain is considered the best ski resort in America. Whiteface Mountain is located in upstate New York. The mountain is considered the fifth highest mountain in State of New York. The Adirondack range, Whiteface Mountain, has a beautiful all round view of the mountains in Canada and Vermont too. Many daredevil skiers attempt skiing on Whiteface Mountain, as it possesses one best vertical drops in the eastern part of United States. Located near Lake Placid, Whiteface hosted the Alpine Skiing Competition of the Winter Olympics, in 1980.

Among the other affordable places, the world famous Aspen Mountain in Colorado is popular for its skiing trails. Nicknamed the old Ajax by locales, the Aspen Mountain is a skier's delight. The Vail Mountain, another Colorado mountain resort is a must visit. Another world famous western state resort is in Park City, Utah, home of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. All of the resorts listed provide ample opportunity to ski and relax.

It is advisable for skiers to wear warm clothing and follow runs, trails or patrolled ski routes that are checked for safety. Most skiers enjoy cross-country skiing, but non-professional skiers are warned to stay within the boundaries of the resort. Cross-country skiing is not appreciated in most European countries. These countries have implemented laws forbidding tourists from crossing the boundaries, due to avalanches and the high cost of search and rescue operations.

Skiing, considered a fitness exercise by fitness gurus, is a great way to get in good physical shape. The experience savored on a ski family vacation is a unique and memorable one. <bio>Robert Carlton very often publishes short articles on information much like Costa Blanca and Denia. Writing for detailed writings like http://www.alicante-spain.com/benidorm.html ,the author showed his expertise on news about Benidorm. </bio>

If you are looking for a bit of winter skiing glamour, the Aspen Ski Resorts in Colorado may be what you are looking for. When people talk about winter skiing vacation in Aspen, they likely are referring to Ajax Mountain, which rises directly above the Aspen town. However, there are actually 4 ski mountains linked to the name of Aspen. All four ski areas are linked together on the same lift ticket.

The Roaring Fork Valley, another ski resort in Aspen is technically the most challenging ski area in Aspen, followed by Buttermilk, often billed as the best beginner mountain in the Rocky Mountains. Then there is the Snowmass, a ski area bigger than the other 3 combined. The Snowmass prides itself on its extensive intermediate skiing terrain and have plenty of extreme slopes too for the more adventurous skiers.

The ski trails and 'dump' runs in Ajax have queer sounding names like Bear Paw, Zaugg Dump, Last Dollar, Perry's Prowl and short Snort. All these are fairly short, sharp and challenging descents built on the steep slopes where gold miners once tunneled their way into the mountain.

Novice skiers are discouraged from skiing Ajax not so much because of the challenging terrain but because getting off the mountain at the end of the day can be very intimidating. Most of the skiing is at the top of the mountain but the main slopes, Cooper Bowl and Spar Gulch tend to be somewhat fast and furious which intermediates and expert skiers in Aspen Colorado plunge their way home.

Unless novice skiers travel back down on the Silver Queen gondola, they will be forced into the very narrow, steep gullies to plummet like a missile. This can be a very terrifying experience for someone new to skiing. The ski at Buttermilk will be a better choice for novice skiers.

Aspen Highlands is Aspen's real attraction. As the only one of the four resorts to be independently owned, it had developed a reputation for the most challenging and yet the cheapest and least expensive resort in the Roaring Fork Valley.

While most skiers in Aspen will only ski at the Ajax Mountain, hard core skiers will head for the ski lift system to take them to the breathtaking steep slopes of Aspen Highland's Olympic Bowl, Steeple Chase and Temerity, skiing exhilarating runs like Mushroom, Aces and Eights and Deception which starts steep and gets steeper along the way.

Have you tried winter skiing at Aspen Colorado? Why not give it a try in your next winter vacation? <bio>Chris Chew is a travel veteran.
Why skiing? Because it is not only enjoyable, but is a great way of fitness: skiing is a great form of exercise requiring a level of skill, balance, and flexibility. Skiing is also great way to strengthen and tone several muscle groups.

What can be such a big fun like skiing? The mountains, the views, the blue sky and breathing clean mountain air...unless you are in an indoor sky slope in Dubai. But if you would like to have real adventure, go outside.

Vermont is New England's winter sports capital and Vermont Ski Areas attract thousands of skiers every ski season. It is not an exaggeration that Vermont has the hottest skiing resorts in the eastern US. You can explore the best ski and snowboard resorts in the eastern US in Vermont.

Vermont is a very important feature of U.S. ski history. The first alpine ski lift in America was in Woodstock, and many Vermont Olympians have lifted ski medals on the podium. Cross-country skiing caught on at the Trapp Family Lodge and telemark skiing began its renaissance here. Vermont is home to the first U.S. Olympic gold medal winner in nordic skiing, Bill Koch, as well as outstanding alpine skiers such as Betsy Snite, Andrea Meade, Suzy Chaffee, Billy Kidd and several members of the Cochrane family. The Green Mountain State is a heaven for ski apostles of all tastes and experience levels.

If you would like to go to a very well equipped and large area, try Killington first: this place

offers the most skiing ... Killington is the largest ski and snowboard area in the East. Killington offers most variety of terrain served by the East's highest capacity lift system. Six interconnected mountains and nearby Pico Mountain, provide unparalleled diversity of skiing and the greatest vertical in New England. Snowboarders are drawn to the challenge of the longest terrain park in the East.

Killington also features nearby lodging, convenient services, family activities, some of the best ski shops in New England. Within the region there are also a variety of shopping delights -- factory outlets, antique shops, artisan workshops, craft fairs and rustic country stores.

You'll find easy access to the resort by ground transportation services or by resort shuttle systems. You'll have a great experience if you visit Vermont, don't miss it! <bio>Fruzsina Csery wrote this article for http://www.vermontatoz.com </bio>

The Post Solo Training Costs associated with the Private Pilot License are normally close to the pre solo phase but will burn your money up the fastest. Once you break this down you want to look at the big picture of the entire license. You don't want to get stuck and run out of money because in this phase of your training, you are doing longer flights and will have more ground instruction.

Once again there are some requirements put out by the FAA that have to be done before you can do your solo cross countries. Some training syllabuses will do some of the things I list below before solo but I like to build each lesson on top of the other so you learn one thing and then integrate it into the next lesson.

A perfect example is the simulated instrument training. I have this broken into 2 post solo flights. That will get about 2.2 hours of simulated instrument time. Then I have a lost procedures lesson where we will get about another .3 hours then the rest I will pick up at the flight test preparation stage. Bottom line is you need the three hours but if you are getting a little here and then a little there, chances are someone misses it and the examiner picks it up on flight test day and then walks out because you aren't qualified.

The other thing that can happen is your instructor picks it up and then up you go for an extra flight. The same thing can happen with the night time. I can't tell you how many times it has even happened to me no matter how careful I was. Now I do all the night time in one flight so it is over and done with. You don't want to get a call from your instructor the night before your flight test telling you to meet them at the airport to get some more flight time.

For our purpose here I will just list the requirements and then give you an estimate on the cost. The Private Pilot Post Solo requirements can be found at the link below. I will just outline the cost for you:

Private Pilot License, Post Solo Requirements
Basically there are 5 things needed before you can go on solo cross countries.

Soft Field Takeoffs and Landings

Short Field Takeoffs and Landings

Simulated Instrument Time

Vor Navigation

Cross Country Flight Training

Now the Hour Requirements are just for the Private Pilot License Aeronautical Experience but you have to have logged the above subject areas. The FAA only has an hour requirement for the private pilot certificate, but I personally think that students need two different cross-country flights and about 2-3 hours of ground instruction. I am also going to add the solo cross country hours here since the goal here is to get the solo cross country requirements and move on to the flight test preparation portion of your Private Pilot Flight Training.

If we add this all up we get the following cost for this part of your private pilot training:

Private Pilot License Post Solo Cost

11.1 Hours of Dual Instruction @ $165 Per hour

$1831.50

2.5 Hours of Ground Instruction @ $45 Per Hour

$112.50

5 Hours of Solo Cross Country Flight

$600.00

Total

$2543.00

Once again with a good instructor and flying consistently, you should be close to this amount for this phase of your Pilot License Training.

Depending on the instructor or the syllabus you may do one day cross country and then one night cross country. I personally have two different day cross countries to different types of airports.

Hope to see you in the sky

Airfreddy<bio>Frederick Longe has been flying since 1985. He has logged over 9,000 Hours of flight instruction alone. In 1998 Longe was awarded one of the first Master CFI Designations in the country by the National Association Of Flight Instructors.
Aspen is one of the most popular ski destinations in the Unites States and perhaps one of the best well known in the entire world. Creating an Aspen ski vacation resort was the brainchild of Friedl Pfeifer, an accomplished skier from Austria who wound up in Aspen at the end of WW II.

With only a few dollars in his pocket he founded the first ski school in Aspen and partnered with Walter Paepcke to create to create what was then the world's longest chairlift.

The sleepy mining town of Aspen was suddenly transformed into one of the most popular recreational nooks in America. Now Aspen is home to many ski resorts, hotels, and bread and breakfast cottages to accommodate the thousands of people which take an Aspen ski vacation each year.

Are you considering an Aspen ski vacation? If so, it is a very popular choice, and you will be surely be glad you visited Aspen. Aspen is surrounded by 4 mountains and offers more than 4500 acres of fascinating terrain. Aspen receives plenty of snow each year that is just perfect for skiing and other snow related sports.

Ajax Mountain is a big draw for the more advanced skiers. It has over 700 acres for skiing and a vertical drop of more than 3200 feet. Next to Ajax is the Aspen Highlands which is perfectly suitable for beginning and intermediate skiers. You may even spot some Olympic medalists on the Aspen Highlands, as it is a favored skiing spot for skiers of all abilities who seek an Aspen ski vacation.

The Buttermilk is smaller mountain and more suited for beginning skiers. This also is home to the longest terrain park and host to the ESPN Winter X Games. The largest of the Aspen mountains is Snowmass and it has over 3000 acres of skiing terrain and has areas suitable for skiers of all abilities.

Snowmass is perhaps the most well known Aspen mountain and is popular for an Aspen ski vacation. It offers some spectacular panoramic views.

Aspen is situated around 215 miles to the southwest of Denver and about 75 miles to the southeast of Eagle. Aspen has its own airport, Sardy Field, which makes flying into the resort town for an Aspen ski vacation very easy to accomplish. <bio>Sarah Thomas provides articles on http://www.curacaocentral.com.
Action Sports are very popular these days and there are many types. They include sports such as Motocross racing, Surfing, Waterskiing, Parasailing, Rock Climbing and the list goes on. Here is a brief history of the beginnings of a few of the more popular Action Sports.

History of Skateboarding.

Skateboarding began in Southern California sometime in the late 40s or early 50s. Southern California has some of the most popular surfing spots in the state which attract surfers from all over the world. Even when the waves were not right the surfers wanted to be able to surf so somehow skateboarding evolved, no one really knows who built the very first skateboard, but the idea caught on and spread like wild fire. Today there are skateparks, ramp skating, trick skating and the Skateboard itself has evolved to allow skaters the ability to perform very complicated tricks and maneuvers.

History of Snowboarding.

The first Snowboard was called the Snurfer and was manufactured as a toy in 1966. I was basically a Skateboard with no wheels that you would steer with a rope. It had no bindings but would allow your boots to adhere to the board. In the early 70s a surfer developed a Snowboard called the Winterstick based on the feel of a surfboard but with the same function as skis. Through the years Snowboards and Snowboarding have increased greatly in popularity with the boards now being designed to enable Snowboards to race and perform freestyle tricks.

History of Skiing.

Skiing began as a means of travel and transportation. Sondre Norheim of Norway helped develop Skiing as Recreation and a Sport. In the mid to late 1800s lighter, thinner, cambered skis and a new stiff binding were developed which made it possible for skiers to swing, jump and maneuver turns while skiing down hill.

Some types of skiing are;

Alpine Skiing is what you do when you go to a ski resort, ride the lift and let gravity propel you down the run.

Alpine Freestyle or Jib skiing is where skiers use jumps or kicks to do aerial tricks.

Back Country Skiing or Nordic touring uses Nordic style equipment which allows skiers to ski up hill in areas where there are no chairlifts.

Cross Country Racing is one third up hill, one third downhill and one third flat.

Adaptive Skiing is done by people with physical disabilities and allows for adaptations to standard ski equipment.

Military Skiing is recreational and a means of transportation for the military, many armies train for ski warfare.

Nordic Jumping or ski flying is where skiers slide down a ramp and fly to see who can to the furthest before landing on the ground.

Nordic Skiing is the most popular style and does not require a special ski area and was developed in Scandinavia as a means of travel in winter.

Telemark skiing uses flexible ski boots that do not lock the heels into the skis which allow the skier to travel at higher speeds.

History of Cycling.

Cycling has grown in popularity over the years and throughout the world. In some countries it is a means of transportation through very narrow streets that will not allow cars to travel or countries where cars are too expensive. Cycling as a sport has increased in popularity throughout the world as well and uses bikes that are specially designed for the terrain and speeds.

Action Sports Gifts.

Action Sports are becoming more popular everyday and there are many types. They can include other sports such as Motocross racing, Surfing, Waterskiing, Parasailing, Rock Climbing, 4 Wheeling, Snowmobiling, Drag Racing, Mountain Biking and more.

Some interesting gift ideas for an Action Sports enthusiast might be to decorate a small tree with Action Sports Ornaments. There are Skateboarding Ornaments, Bike Racer Ornaments, Gifts for Snowboarders, Snowboarding Ornaments and Skiing Ornaments. These are just a few of the different types of Action Sports Gifts that are available. They are sure to be a hit with any Action Sport enthusiast.<bio>Debby Brown has been a writer for Christmas Decorations and Gifts for several years.
Downhill skiing requires a combination of athleticism, leisure, privilege, and the devil-may-care attitude that allows participants to enjoy the thrill of, essentially, falling down a steep snow-covered mountain, over and over again. It's not a sport for the faint at heart. No wonder it's a plot point in so many James Bond movies, where we see our secret-agent hero zigzagging down the world's most dangerous slopes as evil spies take shots at him from above.

Alpine skiing is pure adrenaline, in contrast to the long-haul shuffling of the sport from which it developed, cross-country skiing. Alpine skiing is, historically, a version of cross-country skiing in which the plateau experience--those miles and miles of plain, mostly flat crossing--are edited out, and the extremes--the long, dangerous downhills--are left in. It became possible only when major mountain skiing resorts began to add ski lifts, which allow skiers to be towed back to the top of long downhills which would be near-impossible (and even dangerous) to climb more than once. (After all, even if you're in good enough shape to climb a high mountain on your skis more than once a day, the resulting fatigue and exhaustion will render you unable to exert the control necessary on the downhill. Injury, even death, may result.) The resulting sport was pure thrill: like having the Boston Marathon reduced to the drama and pathos of Heartbreak Hill, or a Tour de France that consists only of those ninety-mile-an-hour downhill bursts.

But that doesn't mean downhill skiing isn't a hard sport--after all, it isn't just gravity doing all the work. The skier must remain in control of both the speed and direction of the descent at all times--otherwise the speed that makes the sport so much fun becomes frightening and potentially lethal. And you need quality equipment to keep you safe on the descent; for beginners, the best bet is probably to rent skis and other necessities from the resort where you're taking your trip. (You can always buy your own later.) All of this may make downhill skiing intimidating for newcomers, but most resorts have staff on hand to help you learn the ropes. (To plan your ski trip, your auto-insurance company may offer advice, and travel magazines and websites should come in handy as well.)

Before you go, here's a preview of some essential lessons you'll be learning. The most basic skill to learn in downhill skiing is the control of the speed and angle of your descent and the most basic method of control is the snowplow: pointing the tips of your skis inward so that the tails are outward. Your skis should form a V with the inside point in front of you. Doing this reduces speed, and allows you to keep from reaching a dangerous level of momentum. But you need to practice this stance before you get going on a steep downhill; it can take some learning to be able to snowplow without stumbling over your own inturned feet.

Knowing how to turn can also save your life. After all, you don't want to crash into a rock! To turn left, assume the snowplow position, but with the angle reduced: your skis should not form a dramatic V shape but should be subtly inclined toward each other. Now shift your weight onto your righthand ski to move to the left; do the same with your lefthand ski in order to move to the right. The degree to which you shift your weight determines how sharply you turn.

Most resorts will have multiple "runs" (downhills graded according to, well, their grade: the steepness of descent) for beginners, intermediate skiers, and experts. Resorts in the West often have many runs in each category, while Midwestern resorts in places likes Illinois and rural Minnesota (states that offer some of the most consistent snowy weather in the country) will often have fewer runs. But expert skiers point out that sometimes it's better to spend your first ski trip practicing over and over on the same beginner and intermediate runs; your muscles will learn the required movements better, your coordination will develop, and on your next ski trip, you'll be readier to face the challenges of intermediate and eventually expert runs. After all, skiing, like piano playing or ice skating, depends on having the basics absolutely down cold--if you'll excuse a pun.<bio>CigarFox provides you the opportunity to build your own sampler of the finest cigars that include cigar brands like Montecristo, Romeo and Julieta, H Upmann, Macanudo, Cohiba, Partagas, Gurkha and many more. Choose from more than 1200 different cigars! Other cigar products include cigar humidors, cigar boxes, and cigar accessories like Zippo Lighters.</bio>

One of the worst things to do when planning a cross-country bike trip is to plan a long trip. Instead, think of each day as a single one-day trip. The metal stress of thinking of crossing the east, prairies, desert, and Rockies, is enough to make the trip seem impossible.

Just plan one rest stop to the next, one day at a time, conquer each state individually. That's the mind game behind the trip Many bicycle fans dream of a cross-country trip, but few do it. The biggest roadblock is the time commitment needed. A physically fit, experienced bicyclist requires almost three months.

The best way to overcome this is to take time off college or work and do the entire trip in one try. The second way is to break the trip into several segments.

While purists may consider the second way as a cheat, not really a cross country road trip, each individual needs to ask themselves whether they want to prove they have the endurance make the entire trip in one shot, or to see the country from the seat of a bike.

Cost

Even if you rough it, the trip will cost $4,000 to $5,000, more if you hope to spend most nights in a motel.

Don't skimp on the bicycle. Expect to pay $1,200 or more for a genuine touring model. Take the time to read issues of Bicycle magazines and web blogs, so you can see what problems others faced. One example, might be stopping at a good bike shop as the terrain changes for a new set of tires.

Fitness

A cross country trip does not need an Olympic athlete. To cross the country in 3 months requires riding 50 miles a single day, every day. You will need to train before the trip. It will take a few days riding with your equipment on the bike to prepare your muscles.

It is also important to start out slow. You might be pumped enough to do 50 miles a day for the first few days, but you risk pulling a muscle and ruining the whole trip. Start out slow, prepare to take a slow day when needed, and listen to your body.

Fear

The media has made it impossible to imagine a road trip without running into danger. As the trip draws near you'll imagine everything from gangsters in the city, to drunk drivers, to mountain lions lurking on a ridge.

Most roads are quiet, but shoulders were often non-existent. It is important to remain alert and cautious. Never assume that drivers in every section of the country will be accustomed to sharing the road with bikers.

Route planning requires research. This is where reading blogs and information from people who have taken the trip comes in handy. You can learn which roads are good to follow, which have 'unforseen' problems. A map may show a road, but it won't tell you if there is no shoulder at the side, or if there is too much traffic.

The TransAmerica Trail is a safe bet. The drivers are use to driving with bikers.

The time of year can also change the 'best route'. It is a good idea to track the weather.

For more help visit journals of long-distance cyclists at www.crazyguyonabike.com <bio>Chip Clark helps people explore bicycling as a hobby at his site http://www.bicyclefever.com Drop by and download the FREE guide. </bio>

If you are thinking about taking a trip in the near future, there are many areas that you should consider. There are places in North America with lots of history and sights, but there are so many other places abroad that can be much more interesting and historically significant. There are many places in the world that you may never think of to travel on your vacation, but they may be just the relaxing getaway you have been in search of. We have put together some ideas for world travel to help you decide where you want to travel on your next vacation.

If you like the beach scene, there are many beaches to sample here in the states. Cities such as Miami, Dayton, Jacksonville, Malibu, and many cities in Hawaii offer great beaches for sunning and swimming. If you prefer leaving the country, you could always try South America. Rio de Janeiro has very nice beaches, however, the bathing suits are somewhat skimpy if existent at all. The Bahamas and other Caribbean Islands have wonderful beaches that beckon American tourists on a daily basis. Their beaches promise us palm trees and sandy shores as well as warm breezes and days of laziness and relaxation.

If you are a history buff, you may find that Pompeii is the place that tops your desired list of foreign locales. This location in Italy is the site of the great eruption of Mt Vesuvius some 2000 years ago. The city was completely destroyed, yet perfectly preserved by the lava that filled the city streets in an instant after the eruption. Seeing the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum (also destroyed in the same manner) is like stepping back in time to a place that time forgot. The history that lies there is more than we as Americans can ever experience in our home country. Also, while in Italy, you would have to stop by Rome and see the rich history of the Roman civilization and the emperors that once ruled the known world.

If you live for adventure, then and African Safari is probably tops on your list of things to do before you die. An African safari offers excitement and adventure, especially for those of us used to only seeing those types of animals on television. There are tour groups to take you on the safari and explain the animals and surroundings to the group. On a safari, you can see such animals as lions, elephants, monkeys and zebra in their natural habitat. Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are just a few of the places that offer an authentic African Safari.

If you are more into winter sports such as snow skiing, then a trip to the mountains of Europe may be right up your alley. The advancement in safety over the last several years have made snow skiing safer and more enjoyable for professionals and novices alike. Downhill skiing may seem too advanced for some, and if so, cross country skiing may be more the thing for you. There are resorts and parks all over the world that offer trails for cross country skiers of all ages.

With all of these ideas for world travel, you are sure to find something to tempt your thoughts for your next vacation. <bio>http://www.MyWorldTravelSite.com provides free information on world travel.
After you solo or have completed the solo requirements, your instructor should move you ahead to the next phase of training even if you are not quite ready to solo. Like I have said before many flight schools and instructors will not move you forward until you have solo'ed.

I personally move everyone forwards since the goal is to get you licensed on a budget without loosing quality of flight training.

Here are the Post Solo Requirements for your Private Pilot License Training. Once again they start off general and get more specific.

(a) General. (1) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, a student pilot must meet the requirements of this section before--

(i) Conducting a solo cross-country flight, or any flight greater than 25 nautical miles from the airport from where the flight originated.

(ii) Making a solo flight and landing at any location other than the airport of origination.

(2) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, a student pilot who seeks solo cross-country flight privileges must:

(i) Have received flight training from an instructor authorized to provide flight training on the maneuvers and procedures of this section that are appropriate to the make and model of aircraft for which solo cross-country privileges are sought;

(ii) Have demonstrated cross-country proficiency on the appropriate maneuvers and procedures of this section to an authorized instructor;

(iii) Have satisfactorily accomplished the pre-solo flight maneuvers and procedures required by §61.87( The Pre Solo requirements ) of this part in the make and model of aircraft or similar make and model of aircraft for which solo cross-country privileges are sought; and

(iv) Comply with any limitations included in the authorized instructor's endorsement that are required by paragraph (c) of this section.
This is once again a general requirement for Student Pilot Solo Cross Countries. Now I will dig into them a little more and you find the following.

(3) A student pilot who seeks solo cross-country flight privileges must have received ground and flight training from an authorized instructor on the cross-country maneuvers and procedures listed in this section that are appropriate to the aircraft to be flown.

There is a lot more in this regulation. But the important part for this discussion is what is required for you to be eligible for Solo Cross Countries: As you move down this regulation you find the following:

(e) Maneuvers and procedures for cross-country flight training in a single-engine airplane. A student pilot who is receiving training for cross-country flight in a single-engine airplane must receive and log flight training in the following maneuvers and procedures:

(1) Use of aeronautical charts for VFR navigation using pilotage and dead reckoning with the aid of a magnetic compass;

(2) Use of aircraft performance charts pertaining to cross-country flight;

(3) Procurement and analysis of aeronautical weather reports and
forecasts, including recognition of critical weather situations and estimating visibility while in flight;

(4) Emergency procedures;

(5) Traffic pattern procedures that include area departure, area arrival, entry into the traffic pattern, and approach;

(6) Procedures and operating practices for collision avoidance, wake turbulence precautions, and windshear avoidance;

(7) Recognition, avoidance, and operational restrictions of hazardous terrain features in the geographical area where the cross-country flight will be flown;

(8) Procedures for operating the instruments and equipment installed in the aircraft to be flown, including recognition and use of the proper operational procedures and indications;

(9) Use of radios for VFR navigation and two-way communications;

(10) Takeoff, approach, and landing procedures, including short-field, soft-field, and crosswind takeoffs, approaches, and landings;

(11) Climbs at best angle and best rate; and

(12) Control and maneuvering solely by reference to flight instruments, including straight and level flight, turns, descents, climbs, use of radio aids, and ATC directives.

Notice there are no hour requirements in this regulation. All of these areas need to be in your logbook but the hour requirements only come into play in the general requirements.

When skiers think great slopes, they think Oregon. And when skiers want a great place to stay while skiing in Oregon, they choose the Timberline Lodge.

Timberline Lodge is more than a great place to ski; it's a lodge with history. A master craftsman built Timberline Lodge during the Great Depression. It's a majestic building that many will recognize from the movie andquot;The Shiningandquot;. Many of the outdoor scenes from the classic film were shot at Timberline Lodge in Oregon.

The lodge was completely built by hand, and remains very well preserved. Hand-woven draperies and hand-hewn beams create a rustic charm that beautiful reflects the history of this stunning building. The lodge itself sits amid 1400 acres of land. Thirty-five trails have been created for beginner, intermediate and expert skiers. Timberline Lodge's top elevation is 8504', with a vertical drop of 2501', and six chair lifts are available.

A unique feature of Timberline Lodge in Oregon is that it's the only lodge in the United States to offer year-round snow skiing.

There is an area of Timberline Lodge called Palmer Snowfield that is permanently covered in snow. Beginners are not always allowed on Palmer Snowfield; the conditions are evaluated each day, and the staff determines who will be allowed access to the area.

Skiing, snowboarding, show shoeing, hiking and lodge tours are main attractions at Timberline. Powder is King here, so all activities are snow-related. Mount Hood, where Timberline is located, is an active volcano considered to be dormant. Tremors are occasionally felt, and steam vents are often visible. Skiers and non-skiers alike must visit the Magic Mile for an unmatched panoramic view of the Cascade Mountains.

Timberline Lodge offers guests a selection of dining options. The Cascade Dining Room is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, however hours of operation do change depending on the season. Guests can also choose to dine at the Blue Ox, Ram's Head, Market Cafe, Wy'East or the Mount Hood Brewing Company.

Skis and equipment is not available to rent at Timberline Lodge. It is essential that you bring your own equipment, but you can buy smaller items like goggles and gloves at the lodge.

Some clothing items are also available for purchase. There is a ski and snowboard school on the premises offering private instruction and group lessons.

The historic Timberline Lodge in Oregon is a great choice of skiers looking for a rustic getaway. There may be more luxurious resorts out there, but if your idea of the perfect vacation is pristine slopes and very cool old resort lodge, you can't beat Timberline. <bio>Nancy Jackson contributes articles to several web sites, such as http://yogey.com and http://zigug.com </bio>

As a sport or a hobby, mountain biking can be split into 9 different categories.

These categories are very versed in what they offer. They are:

1. BMX BMX is a style where the bikes offer 20 inch wheels. These bikes are commonly used at skate parks or with dirt jumps. Because of their smaller wheels and shorter wheel bases, BMX bikes are much easier to perform tricks and stunts with.

2. Cross country This type of mountain biking involves riding your bike up and down hills. Although it's the least extreme form of mountain biking, most cross country riders are very fit and go on long rides.

3. Cyclo cross This is a cross between road and mountain biking. These riders have to go over obstacles, cross through rivers, and race on and off the course.

4. Dirt jumping Dirt jumping involves jumping the bike over large man made dirt jumps then doing tricks while they are in the air. These jumps are normally close together so riders can go over six or more jumps in one run, gaining a flow to give them more speed for bigger jumps.

5. Downhill Downhill mountain biking involves racing downhill as fast as possible. This type of riding is very intense and extreme, offering riders the chance for ultimate thrills and excitement.

6. Freeride Free riding involves finding the perfect line down the mountain using all of the terrain to express yourself. These competitions are very popular, as riders can express themselves any way they see fit.

7. Single speed Not to be confused with fixed gears, this is a form of cross country biking that's done using a bike with only one gear and fewer components. The idea with single speed is simplicity. The straight chain line will provide efficient pedaling, and the lack of components mean less mechanical problems and a lighter bike.

8. Street and urban This type of riding involves riding in urban areas, ledges, and other types of man made obstacles. Riders of street and urban biking will do tricks as well, such as stalls and grinds.

9. Trails Trials are considered an aspect of mountain biking, although the bikes used look nothing like mountain bikes. They use 20 or 26 inch wheels and sport small, low frames. Trail riders will hop and jump their bikes over obstacles, which requires an extreme amount of balance and concentration. <bio>Andrew Manifield is the owner of http://www.on-mountain-biking.com, THE best source for advice on Mountain Biking, everyhting from lubricating your chain to choosing the next Downhill Run location.
Does your idea of the perfect vacation include snow-capped mountains, heart-stopping vertical drops and challenging moguls? If so, an Aspen ski vacation just might be your perfect wintertime getaway.

Aspen, Colorado is one of the world's premier ski resort towns. When snow falls on the more 4,500 acres of sprawling terrain spread over four main mountains, Aspen explodes in a white-capped wonderland of skiing and outdoor fun for all ages and abilities.

Aspen was originally a small mining town, until a small group of visionaries and entrepreneurs realized the potential and value of the town's other inexhaustible resort--the snow. Since then, the sleepy hamlet of Aspen has grown to become one of the best destinations for ski vacations worldwide. The first step to creating this now bustling recreational nook came in 1947. It was then that an Austrian entrepreneur named Friedl Pfeifer partnered with Chicago industrialist Walter Paepcke and his wife Elizabeth. The trio established would be the first of a number of Aspen ski vacation resorts, and opened what was known then as the world's longest chairlift. Following the success of this inaugural venture, more Aspen ski vacation resorts and hotels were opened, and the town grew to the Aspen so many skiers love today.

The main attraction of Aspen, and its undisputed claim to fame, has got to be the four majestic mountains. Located in Colorado approximately 215 miles southwest of Denver, 75 miles southeast of Eagle, and only minutes from Aspen's Sardy Field (ASE), the four mountains distinctly highlight a terrain particularly suited to various levels of skiers.

The Aspen Mountain, also known as Ajax, is best suited to seasoned skiers. As Aspen's main attraction, the Ajax boasts more than 3,200 vertical feet on 700 skiable acres.

The Aspen Highlands are another huge bonus for those taking an Aspen ski vacation. Situated adjacent to the Aspen Mountain, the Highlands provide a respectable level of skill for novices, plus terrain for intermediate skiers. A number of Olympic medallists spend their time at the Aspen Highlands.

Another gem of the Aspen ski vacation scene is the Buttermilk. Known for being a smaller, novice-oriented mountain, the Buttermilk has a lot to offer skiers of all skill levels. It features the Aspen's longest terrain park and is home to the ESPN Winter X Games of the World. Held at the end of January, the ESPN Winter X Games are a huge tourist draw.

The largest of the four Aspen ski vacation mountains is Snowmass. Novice, intermediate and advanced skiers flock to Snowmass for the thrill of taking on the more than 3,000 acres of ski terrain. Challenging slopes and spectacular views make Snowmass a great choice for your Aspen ski vacation.

Regardless of your skill level, you will find your winter wonderland among the four majestic mountains of Aspen. <bio>James Williams contributes to several web sites, including http://rukar.com and http://yuzie.com </bio>

As well as being a booming country economically, Romania also has some of the finest skiing in Europe, making it an increasingly popular choice with tourists wanting excellent skiing at a fraction of the normal price.

Home for most of the ski resorts in Romania is the Prahova Valley, which is less than two hours' drive from Bucharest. The mountain range is called the Carpathian and it is here that budding skiers will find the best slopes.

Poiana Brasov is one of the best known resorts in Romania and has made its way into many of the ski directories, across the globe. Without a doubt, this skiing area is the most developed of the Romanian resorts and boasts 2 cable cars, 7 ski lifts and even a gondola. As a result, property prices are, generally, slightly higher in this region, although popularity with the tourists ensures a healthy rental yield.

Prices in this well established region are, understandably, fairly high, with a 300-square metre house setting investors back anything up to £200,000. Robert Burke, a Romanian property expert for local company Romauction, says: 'Poiana Brasov has already been discovered by the Romanians, but Sinaia, Predeal and Azuga are cheaper and have a lot more potential'.

Predeal is situated at the highest altitude in Romania and offers unrivalled skiing opportunities for both beginners and more experienced skiers. There is also a project currently underway to link Predeal with the Azuga mountain resort which boasts the longest ski slope in the country.

Sinaia is known as 'Carpathians Pearl' and is thought to be the most beautiful of all the Romanian resorts and is full of history and charm. Not entirely untouched by tourism, Sinaia now also has the best après ski facilities of all of the Romanian ski resorts.

Runs start at 900 metres and some extend as far as 2000 metres, making this ideal for all levels of skiers. Prices in this less developed region are around half of those in Poiana Brasov. This area is, therefore, an excellent choice for those wanting a traditional resort with large capital growth potential.

Busteni is another resort that has gained international acclaim, with the snow thickness often exceeding 45 centimetres. The resort itself is situated at the bottom of the Bucegi Mountains, at 900 metres and some of the runs are over 2000 metres long, guaranteeing tourists pleasurable skiing days.

The ski season starts in November and lasts until as late as April, offering good rental yield for investors. Facilities are also good, with 5 ski lifts, 2 ski chairlifts and 3 gondolas.

Despite such a wide choice of resorts, the tourism market for skiing is still relatively undeveloped in Romania and buying property in Romanian ski resorts is likely to present good investment opportunities, for the future.

Infrastructure is being developed rapidly, across the country, which is having a positive impact on the number of visitors venturing into the Romanian mountain regions.

Buying property in Romanian ski resorts offers unrivalled beauty and opportunity for the future, as more tourists discover this hidden gem tucked away in the Carpathian Mountains. <bio>Providing essential information on buying property abroad, Tem Pearson is dedicated to offering all the necessary information for people looking to buy property in different countries.
