There are many physical side effects related to Crohn's Disease. Since Crohn's is a chronic condition for which there is no cure, the disease can permeate an individual's sense of well-being, comfort, and lifestyle for his entire life. While the physical symptoms are intense enough to cause even the most reserved unyielding discomfort, perhaps one of the most damaging results of Crohn's are the emotional side-effects of the disease.

Imagine having to worry each and every time you are asked to go out to dinner. Business dinners and dates, which were once fun, are now made from nightmares. The threat of a sudden flare-up of Crohn's Disease is enough to cause emotional shell-shock. Many afflicted change their mode of social functioning, sometimes preferring to remain isolated and withdrawn. It is not surprising then, that one of the most common medications prescribed to sufferers of Crohn's Disease is antidepressants.

Antidepressants do nothing for the physical symptoms of Crohn's. There are other medications and treatments that handle these devastating characteristics of the disease. However, due to the emotional roller coaster that accompanies Crohn's, many of those suffering from the disease can spiral into deep depression. In addition to suffering emotionally, the stress brought upon by depression can further affect the severity of Crohn's. It has been proven that being in a depressive state can weaken the immune system and leave the body open to a host of hostile invaders. The longer a state of depression lasts, the more difficult it is for the body to function effectively.

Besides taking antidepressants, Crohn's sufferers can find relief through other avenues. Support groups for those afflicted with Crohn's are no longer uncommon. In addition, consulting a mental health practitioner such as a psychiatrist or psychologist can sometimes help those with the disease to better adjust to living with it.

The reality of Crohn's Disease is difficult for many to accept. There are many that are embarrassed and even ashamed. Instead of this attitude there is another way of looking at the problem. Yes, it is a lifelong condition that cannot be cured. However, with proper maintenance, treatment, and careful planning, most people can live normal lives with the disease. When you think of Crohn's, do not simply associate it with physical symptoms only. The results of the disease can cause extreme emotional stress and this expands considerations beyond a medical diagnosis.

If you are currently suffering from Crohn's Disease or know someone close to you who is, you should ensure that your emotional state as well as your physical needs are met. Get the advice of a mental health practitioner and deal with Crohn's instead of hiding from the disease. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
Crohn's Disease is an incurable condition that affects the digestive tract. The symptoms are often painful and if untreated can lead to more serious conditions down the line. Children, while not the age group most likely to suffer from Crohn's, are potentially at the greatest risk from the disease.

Children and adults are diagnosed with Crohn's using the same diagnostic procedures. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate Crohn's from a host of other digestive disorders, however, once it is pinpointed, it can be treated. When dealing with children, it is important to remember that since Crohn's can affect the absorption of nutrients into the body, the disease can potentially sabotage growth and development in a young sufferer. In addition, children may experience disruptions in their academic and social development due to frequent absences from school as Crohn's Disease often causes cramping and severe abdominal pain.

It is important for parents to become familiar with all aspects of Crohn's Disease and be able to relate them to their children. This process of communication is not only important for Children with Crohn's are at high risk for problems with growth and proper sexual maturity. Furthermore, since they are often treated with various medications at an early age, the complications due to side effects from pharmaceutical drugs becomes much more prevalent.

The most common medication treatments for Crohn's Disease in children include aminosalicylates, which are often used to treat mild to moderate cases. Corticosteroids are usually reserved for severe cases to reduce inflammation and hopefully drive the disease into remission. Corticosteroids are highly effective; however, they often result in serious physical and mental side effects.

Since one of the theories on the cause of Crohn's Disease is infection within the digestive tract, antibiotics are often used to treat Crohn's. The most accepted cause of Crohn's Disease is an autoimmune response by the body. To counteract this overaggressive response by the body, immune suppressants are sometimes prescribed to ratchet down the body's ability to attack itself. The risk of serious side effects is great so children taking these drugs have to be carefully monitored. Finally, biologic therapy, which consists of intravenously administering an antibody to fight Crohn's, has been approved by the FDA. This class of drugs is adept at driving Crohn's into remission.

The longer someone has Crohn's the higher the likelihood surgery will become in the future. In fact, while the ultimate goal of medical doctors is to help Crohn's patients avoid surgery, over half of the childhood victims of Crohn's Disease require surgery in about ten to fifteen years after the condition manifests. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
Just because you have Crohn's Disease it does not mean that your life has to end. It is quite likely that you know people with Crohn's Disease -- but you'd never know they had it. If you take the proper steps to manage Crohn's you can still enjoy going out to eat. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind when you eat out.

It is a good idea to have a plan when you are going to eat out. As many Crohn's sufferers can attest, the disease can rear its ugly head at the drop of a dime. Make sure you have all the basics covered -- or at least as many as possible -- before you leave the comfort and security of your home.

If you know where you are going out to eat you should probably check the menu online for items that you will be able to eat with little worry. Most restaurants have websites that have either their complete menus or at least a sample of the kind of food on offer. If there is no website or the choices don't offer things you can safely eat, you can always call them.

If you tell the manager about your battle with Crohn's, and inform them of your dietary needs, you might be able to commission a custom meal! If there is no way the restaurant can help you out, have something to eat at home before you leave and just have something small and light at the restaurant.

When you get to a restaurant it is a good idea that you find out where the restrooms are located. If you have a sudden flare-up it may be necessary for you to make a quick exit to the bathroom. Once you have located the restrooms and chosen something you know should be able to eat without too much trouble you can relax and enjoy your evening.

Crohn's Disease symptoms can be exacerbated by many foods. Become familiar with foods that irritate you and do your best to avoid them. Most appetizers such as buffalo wings, potato skins, and mozzarella sticks may irritate your digestive tract. In addition, avoid alcoholic drinks whenever possible.

Eating out with Crohn's Disease does not have to be a dreaded event. For many business people, dinner meetings are a regular event. If you have Crohn's you may not always have the choice of where to eat. This is why having a conscious plan to tackle dining out is important. Remember, even if you are in remission and have been for some time, another flare-up may be right around the corner. Erring on the side of caution is the best idea especially if it's a restaurant you've not been to before. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
Crohn's disease manifests itself in the bowels and negatively impacts your digestive tract. It is an inflammatory disease that causes some degree of stomach pain and weight loss in most patients; and if it becomes severe enough the side effects can be personally debilitating.

The precise cause of Crohn's still remains unknown. Various research and studies suggest family history, diet and lifestyle, or even immune system deficiencies may be related to the onset of this disease.

As a result of Crohn's disease, ulcers form on the lining of the digestive tract and it is these ulcers that begin to cause the digestive problems. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the G.I. (gastrointestinal tract) and is not necessarily always chronic in nature.

Crohn's can, in fact, in many patients may go into a 'remission' state allowing the sufferer to function normally. However, remission shouldn't necessarily be equated to being healed. There is always a chance that this disease can resurface so it is extremely important that you pay close attention to your health

These ulcers that develop in the digestive tract cause swelling and a subsequent narrowing of the intestinal wall, and as such, will impact the body's ability to digest food properly. This will result in the inability to pass stools efficiently and ultimately lead to the most common visual symptom of Crohn's disease; that being the presence of blood in the stool. Aside from the obvious red flag, blood in the stool is also an indication that the body is losing valuable vitamins and minerals as a result.

The level of severity of Crohn's disease can vary from mild all the way to severe. No matter what level; it is important that the symptoms be recognized early and that a dialog with your primary care physician begins.

History and research has shown that diet can certainly play a role in effectively controlling and treating the symptoms of Crohn's disease; and is quite often the first line of defense that you will discuss with your doctor.

Although there is no current cure for Crohn's, early diagnosis, and working with your physician is the proper path to take in getting this disease under control, keeping it in the background, and minimally effecting the quality of your daily living. <bio>For more important information on stomach pain visit a-stomach-pain.com There's information on stomach pain causes such as Crohn's disease and other articles at http://www.a-stomach-pain.com </bio>

The teenage years are one of the most influential periods in the life of a young person. According to psychological studies many of the developments that take place during these years will impact upon development throughout the entire lifespan of an individual. Therefore, it is vital that whatever difficulties arise be dealt with in a reasonable manner.

While Crohn's Disease normally manifests after the teenage years it is not completely uncommon for the disease to show during this period of time. If Crohn's develops during adolescence it is best that you know how to help your child deal with the disease in the appropriate way.

<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/teenagers" rel="tag">Teenagers can be particularly cruel to one another. Therefore, a teenager suffering from Crohn's Disease can be at risk of being singled out by his or her peers and teased about their condition, especially the physical side effects of it. In addition, due to the sometimes sudden flare ups of Crohn's, the day to day lives of teens can be affected. Sudden urges to go to the bathroom can disrupt the ability to learn in class, enjoy comfortable social development, and contribute to a lack of self-esteem.

Besides the physical symptoms of Crohn's Disease, many sufferers and especially teens, are vulnerable to depression due to the disease. This is not a physical ramification of Crohn's, but a mental one. Feeling excluded, damaged, and unable to participate can send teenagers spiraling into a state of depression that can be even more damaging than suffering from the physical symptoms of Crohn's Disease.

Furthermore, when a teenager is depressed it does not only affect the mind. Depression leads to a weaker immune system, putting teens at greater risk for developing a host of other illnesses. As it stands, the teenage years are notoriously difficult anyway, adding the unwanted burden of Crohn's can make them completely insufferable.

It is interesting to note that one of the most commonly prescribed medications for those with Crohn's is antidepressants. Many teenagers suffering from Crohn's may not even tell a parent or guardian about their difficulties. Instead, they may simply withdraw into isolation or demonstrate other symptoms of adolescent depression such as anger or rebellion. It is important to try and develop an open relationship with your teenager in order to encourage the trust required to treat both the physical and emotional effects of Crohn's Disease.

For more information on how to deal with adolescent Crohn's Disease, you should speak to a mental health practitioner, preferably one that specializes in dealing with children. Remember, the battle with Crohn's Disease does not only occur on the physical front. The emotional battle between Crohn's and the teenager needs to be addressed in order for the conflict to be resolved. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
When deciding on a natural cure for Crohn's disease, you must first understand your body and know how you are feeling. If you feel unwell, a healthy diet may be the first step towards a natural cure for crohns disease. This disease often has such symptoms as diarrhea and the body may lose many essential nutrients. The only way to relieve the symptoms of this loss is to counteract it. A healthy diet that reintroduces those lost nutrients to the body is like a natural cure for Crohn's disease because it strengthens the body and its ability to heal after a flare up of symptoms. Healthy individuals who maintain a healthy diet and active lifestyle are in a better position to fight off illness and have more symptom-free days than those who do not actively work to stay healthy. Rather than to try and find an instant natural cure for Crohn's disease, it is more important to eat well and try and keep fit. By doing this you will ensure your immune system stays strong. This is the first step towards a natural cure for crohns disease. The next step would be looking at a few herbal treatments as they have worked for me.

Is There Any Such Thing As A Natural Cure For Crohn's Disease?

Crohn's disease is a chronic condition and there is currently no known cure. It can be a very painful disease and cause the sufferer many other problems. The best substitute for a natural natural cure for crohns disease would be taking herbal supplements. Other natural alternatives include acupuncture and aromatherapy. Unfortunately, while these may provide temporary relief, they are not a permanent solution. As with other chronic diseases, there is no permanent natural cure Crohn's disease is persistent and lifelong, staying in the sufferer's body for the rest of their lives. This means that, although there may be times when the sufferer feels well, there may be other times when they feel ill. There are lots of ways to cope with the illness and live a happy life. A person's quality of life need not be lessened because of this disease. Herbs that coat the stomach, and thereby help to sooth the gastrointestinal system, have been long been regarded as a natural cure for Crohn's disease because of the feeling of relief that users report experiencing. I myself am a crohns sufferer and I have been well for over three years now. I have been taking herbal supplements and have astounded the doctors. I was at deaths door, in need of an urgent operation. I started taking Aloe mp plus and Esdifan and have been well ever since. I regard this as my natural cure for crohns disease. <bio>http://www.crohnsinfooline.com is an informative site about crohns http://disease.www.crohnsinfoonline.com </bio>

Whenever possible it is always best to try and treat diseases and disorders in a natural way. However, there are times when medication can become necessary. Fortunately, for sufferers of Crohn's Disease, there are medications available that are highly effective in limiting the severity and regularity of the disease.

Oftentimes, the first medicines called upon in the fight against Crohn's Disease are anti-inflammatory drugs. This should come as no surprise as Crohn's manifests itself as inflammation in the intestinal lining. There are various types of anti-inflammatory medications available. Not every drug is effective for every person. Some of the medications work well for mild cases while others work better for more severe flare-ups.

Corticosteroids are amazing when dealing with severe episodes of Crohn's Disease. However, since they work by lowering the effectiveness of the immune system the effect is like taking your goalie out in a hockey game. This is why corticosteroids are not normally given to those with mild flare-ups. The side-effects can be severe so medical doctors normally are cautious when prescribing them.

Immunomodulators are not as powerful as corticosteroids, but they work in the same fashion. However, immunomodulators do not come with the side-effects that their close cousins bring. These drugs are great for helping those in remission stay in that stable state.

Since infections have been closely tied to Crohn's Disease it makes sense that antibiotics are often effective in the good fight. One of the major concerns about using antibiotics is the tendency for them to become less effective as time goes on. The more a person uses a certain antibiotic the greater resistance the bacteria in the body will build up a resistance to it. In addition, using antibiotics can also destroy good bacteria that aid the body in digestion.

Another weapon in the arsenal against Crohn's Disease is through the use of biologic therapy. This type of therapy is normally reserved for the most severe flare-ups. This form of therapy is like a nuclear bomb to the immune system -- minus the radiation. It results in a knock-out of the immune system's ability to produce TNF-alpha -- a protein associated with inflammation.

Surprisingly, antidepressants are also used to battle Crohn's Disease -- but not in the way you are thinking. Antidepressants do not battle inflammation or eliminate fistulas. Actually, they work on beating back the psychological effects of the disease which can be highly disconcerting. One of the worst symptoms of Crohn's is depression. The pain, worry, and discomfort of the disease can often drive someone with Crohn's into deep depression. When depressed, people usually do not respond as well to treatments and the immune system may also be compromised. There are many medications available for the treatment of Crohn's Disease. The best plan of action is to visit your doctor and discuss available treatments. Remember, defeating Crohn's Disease is possible but it will be a lifelong cause. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
Unless you've been hiding in a cave for the past several years you probably know of the boom in the alternative health industry. With fading confidence in modern medicine, people are entering a virtual time machine and are looking to remedies of the past for the treatments of the future.

The natural approach to managing diseases has manifested itself through the creation of organic supermarkets, holistic stores, and alternative health practitioners. Each of these businesses has exploded in recent years. In terms of using the natural approach to treating Crohn's Disease, there are many treatments that have been shown to be of great benefit to sufferers.

One of the natural ways to manage Crohn's Disease is through acupuncture. This ancient Chinese treatment has been found to be effective in helping people manage the disease. Acupuncture is a practice that requires ultra-thin specialized needles to be inserted into various points of the human body. This procedure sounds like it would be incredibly painful; however, this is not the case.

In addition, Crohn's sufferers may want to look into various vitamins, supplements, and nutrients that can help the body function at an optimum level. One of the symptoms of Crohn's is the inability of the body to absorb nutrients. It may be necessary to take vitamins and supplements to address this deficiency. The most common vitamins that are lacking in people with Crohn's disease are vitamins B12, C, E, and folate. Minerals that are often lacking include iron, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

It is also a good idea to review your diet. There are many dietary suggestions for those suffering from Crohn's Disease. Try to add as many antioxidants to your diet as possible. Furthermore, exercising can always be of benefit. When the body combines healthy eating with proper physical activity it is more likely that things will run smoothly.

If you look at Crohn's Disease from outside the box, you will understand that the inability to absorb vitamins and minerals properly can lead to various health problems -- not just the symptoms of Crohn's Disease. This being said, it is a good idea to develop a plan to fight Crohn's. Simply taking medication is not the best answer. These natural ways of stemming the tide against Crohn's can play a huge part in improving your quality of life.

Remember, although medical researchers are working diligently to find a cure for Crohn's Disease, at this time there is no cure. The only way to deal with Crohn's is to manage it through a variety of methods. Before you choose to rely on synthetic medications you should look into the natural remedies that work the way nature intended. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
If you have been reading up on modern health research you would have found plenty of information as to the influence of diet on a host of medical concerns. This is especially true when dealing with Crohn's Disease. In fact, the importance of a regulated diet can be the difference between managing Crohn's Disease and keeping it in check or falling victim to its more serious consequences.

Remember, changing your diet to a Crohn's friendly one will not cure you of the disease. It will, however, limit the flare-ups -- in both regularity and severity -- and help you feel better. In terms of diet, Crohn's Disease is very fickle. Since the disease plays havoc on the digestive tract, it is important that not only do you change what you eat, but also how you eat it. The higher quantity of food you ingest the more chance you have of difficulties with the disease. It is recommended that instead of eating a few large meals per day, you should have several smaller meals. Try not to give your digestive tract so much to do at once. This will help ease the effects of Crohn's Disease.

Furthermore, you must make sure to consume the proper amount of vitamins and minerals on a daily basis. Failure to do so can result in other problems. This is important because diarrhea and constipation are symptoms of Crohn's and can prevent your body from maintaining the proper nutritional fortification to ensure healthy functioning.

In addition to eating right, it is important that you keep your body fully hydrated. Not only is consuming fluids important to manage your Crohn's, fluids can also help you detoxify which can lead to improved health. Drinking water is perhaps the best step in keeping yourself hydrated -- aim for 8 glasses a day.

The diet for those with Crohn's should include a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, and just tiny amounts of fats. Keeping your diet high in fiber is probably the best bet because it influences your body's ability to maintain regular bowel movements. The best source for Crohn's fighting protein is apparently fish. Oily fish also has the added benefit of supplying Omega-3 oils. If you are not a fan of fish you can get Omega-3 oils through various supplements.

There are also many foods that sufferers of Crohns's Disease should avoid like the plague. People diagnosed with Crohn's should stay away from dairy products as much as possible. In addition, avoiding foots with saturated fats, Brassica vegetables, corn or gluten products, and alcohol and caffeine can help reduce the severity and regularity of Crohn's Disease.

Those with Crohn's often react differently to the disease. It is a good idea to keep a food diary so you can track your reactions to various foods. This is a great way to find out which foods work for you and those that cause complications. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
If you were not aware of it, Crohn's Disease is an incurable disease believed to develop from an overactive autoimmune response by the body. Put simply, this means that the body's defenses are basically turning on the body and attacking it. The battle with Crohn's is fought in the digestive tract, particularly within the colon. Through research and the experience of Crohn's sufferers, it has been proven that diet plays an important role in the emergence and subsequent control of the disease.

People living with Crohn's Disease often have to modify their diets. For many, this can be a real pain in the neck. Foods that you once regularly enjoyed might be now impossible to eat. Having Crohn's Disease does not mean you have to stop enjoying food, however, you may have to choose carefully what you eat.

The way the body deals with Crohn's is different for every person. Some may be able to tolerate foods that others cannot. Basically, it takes a trial and error approach. One of the suggestions Crohn's experts have expressed for those with the disease is to keep a food diary. Keep track of what food you eat on a daily basis and the subsequent reactions of your digestive tract. That way if you notice your Crohn's symptoms acting up you can pinpoint the food that may have caused it. In the future, you can avoid that food and by process of elimination, find out which foods you can tolerate and the others that you cannot.

There is also a general list of foods to eat and foods to avoid. As stated earlier, this is not a definitive guideline, but the suggestions are appropriate to the majority of people suffering with Crohn's.

If you have Crohn's Disease, planning a diet is very important. It is best to eat a balanced diet from the four major food groups. Some of the foods that are generally tolerable for Crohn's sufferers include fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly those high in fiber.

Furthermore, from eating salmon, tuna and other types of fish, the body can get valuable omega-3 fatty acids which can also help. Instead of eating massive meals a few times a day, try to eat smaller meals in order to give your digestive tract the leeway to operate without putting it under a lot of pressure. Eat lots of protein, complex carbohydrates, and potassium-rich foods to keep your system in balance. It is also important that you drink lots of water to keep your body hydrated.

Foods that should be usually avoided include those high in fat content, processed food, fast foods, many diary products, sugary products, alcohol and caffeine. Obviously, the healthier the diet your follow, the better it will be for your body to cope with Crohn's Disease.

Crohn's is a fickle disease. It is important that you take an aggressive approach to finding ways to structure your diet so that it does not increase the chances of having flare ups.

Eating healthily, exercising, and working to remain stress-free are the best ways to go. Remember, you are what you eat -- a statement that is even more important when dealing with Crohn's Disease. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
Crohn's disease is a systemic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) of unknown cause, that results in chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract.

It can affect the entire gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, and can also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract.

The incidence of Crohn's disease in North America is 6:100 000, and is thought to be similar in Europe, but lower in Asia and Africa Unlike the other major inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, there is no known medical or surgical cure for Crohn's disease.

Many medical treatments are however available for Crohn's disease with a goal of keeping the disease in remission.

Many patients with Crohn's disease have symptoms for years prior to the diagnosis. Because of the patchy nature of the gastrointestinal disease and the depth of tissue involvement, initial symptoms can be more vague than with ulcerative colitis.

Common initial symptoms of Crohn's disease include the following; Abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, and peri anal discomfort.

Typically, Crohn's disease only affects areas of the large intestine. Because Crohn's disease is most commonly associated with the large intestine, the most common symptoms are diahrea or constipation, and abdominal pain and cramping.

Like all autoimmune disorders, Crohn's disease is a pretty serious condition, and there isn't really any cure for it. There are some new treatments available, but nothing that will cure it outright.

Some people seem to get occassionaly flare ups from their Chorn's disease, but more or less live normal lives. Others suffer from chronic flare ups their entire lives, which can sometimes lead to more serious complications.

The medications you take if you are having a flare up are basically immunosuppressant sorts of drugs and of course steroids, neither of which aren't really all that pleasant to take. They both have a lot of side effects, and the immunosupressants boost your chances of getting some kind of opportunistic infection. <bio>Crohn's disease is a progressive disease of the gastro-intestinal tract that is considered an autoimmune disorder. http://1crohnsdisease.info </bio>

Crohn's disease is an extremely painful inflammatory disease of the intestines and digestive tract. It mainly causes ulcers, or breaks in the lining of the digestive tract so that your stomach acid digests you and not food, but it can cause problems in the tract from the mouth all the way to the anus. The disease is named after the doctor who discovered it in 1932.

The pain that comes with Crohn's disease can flair up randomly or be caused by a whole host of triggers. For some, the wrong kind of food can cause problems, for others the worst trigger is stress. But recent studies have shown that maybe the worst trigger of all is caused by the Marlboro Man.

A study that was done in early 2001 seems to indicate that if a Crohn's sufferer quits smoking, many of the painful flare-ups associated with the disease can be reduced. Those include symptoms such as fever, rectal bleeding, abdominal cramps, diarrhea and fatigue.

The study showed that Crohn's sufferers that smoke have more severe symptoms and tend to be more resistant to medications that could otherwise help them. They also show a slower recovery time after surgery, which is common for Crohn's sufferers who need to have sections of intestine removed that is too ravaged by ulcers.

The chemicals involved in smoking have been shown to change the composition of the mucus in the stomach, large and small intestines making it more susceptible to Crohn's and making the appearance of ulcers far more common.

The risk of smoking and Crohn's doesn't only affect the person lighting up. Evidence has shown that children who have developed Crohn's are usually exposed to second-hand smoke in the home.

The good news is that if you quit smoking, you can recover. Studies have shown that if you can just go a year without a cigarette, your Crohn's symptoms should be like you had never smoked at all. The effects on your lungs, however, take much longer to heal.

The remainder of affects of smoking on the body are well known, led by lung, mouth, throat, oesophagus and voice box cancer. Smoking is also linked to types of leukaemia and cancers of the pancreas, stomach, kidney and bladder. Respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, emphysema and dyspena are also more common with smoking. Cardiovascular diseases such as angina, blood clots and strokes are also shown to be connected to tobacco use.

Of course, the best way to avoid smoking-related flare-ups with Crohn's disease is to never start. But even if you do, there are many clinical avenues out there to help you quit, including smoking patches, nicotine gum, and even hypnosis or prescription medications. The best course of action is to see your doctor and have him or her recommend a fight plan to wean yourself off of tobacco products and decrease your chances of Crohn's flair-ups by 65% or more. Remember, if you don't want to do it for yourself, do it for your children. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
Even though symptoms of Crohn's disease can be controlled through a diet, there is no doubt that the illness is literally a pain in the rear for all sufferers regardless if they are male or female. Unfortunately, it's also a known fact that many women with Crohn's experience gynaecological issues as a result of the disease.

Depending on the type of Crohn's disease a woman has, and the severity she experiences, Crohn's can wreak havoc on her reproductive system, affecting her menstruation cycle, vagina and ability to reproduce without complications. Each gynaecological affect will be discussed below.

Menstruation: Many women with Crohn's disease (over 90%) report having irregular menstruation cycles. Due to the fact that chronic diseases already cause the body to act abnormally, it is not uncommon for women to experience more severe Crohn's symptoms prior to, or directly following their menstrual cycle. The increase in symptoms, along with menses, often results in further inflammation of the intestine, as well as malnutrition.

Vaginal Issues: Some women who have a severe case of Crohn's disease may develop Enterovaginal. This is the medical term used to describe a fistula that occurs in the vaginal region. A fistula is a small abnormal tunnel that connects two organs together and is formed from ulcers present in the digestive track.

A vaginal fistula may be the connection of the vagina to the rectum. This can lead to pain during intercourse, and can also result in other serious side effects including the formation of an abscess (painful, pus filled lump), or passing gas or feces through the vagina. If you have pain during intercourse or notice any other strange side effects related to your vaginal area, consult your physician right away.

Reproduction: Many people are under the misconception that if a woman has Crohn's disease, she is less likely to conceive a child. This is untrue. However, although a woman with Crohn's is just as likely to conceive as any other woman, women with Crohn's need to carefully consider their health before they decide to put their body through the change of pregnancy. This is because pregnant women with Crohn's have a high chance of a flare up which can lead to complications.

Many complications result in malnutrition and dehydration which can cause a miscarriage. In addition, should the flare up of Crohn's require emergency surgery, the unborn baby can suffer complications.

It is estimated that women who develop Crohn's disease, or have an active case while pregnant, are at 2 to 3 times greater risk of having a miscarriage or a premature delivery. Furthermore, many medications that are prescribed to control Crohn's disease can not be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding as they can harm the baby. The lack of medication can also lead to flare ups.

Finally, Crohn's can lead to other medical complications in women such as osteoporosis and colon cancer. Osteoporosis can occur if a woman is being treated for the disease with steroids, and has limited the amount of calcium she puts in her diet, if dairy foods are one of the leading triggers for her Crohn's symptoms.

Colon cancer is another risk. However, this risk is not limited to women, and is something that every Crohn's disease sufferer can face. The same can be said about fistulas. Although Enterovaginal is obviously specific to women, the many other fistulas that occur are not. Thus, make sure you talk to your doctor about the factors you are at risk for and discuss all your treatment options. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
There are many alternative treatments for Crohnandamp;#8217;s disease; aloe vera isnandamp;#8217;t the only remedy out there. In fact, one of the latest studies showing promise for Crohnandamp;#8217;s disease sufferers is an alternative treatment known as helminthic therapy.

Helminthic therapy is an alternative treatment that uses Trichiuruis suis (pig whipworm) to combat symptoms of Crohnandamp;#8217;s disease and ulcerative colitis. During therapy, a patient is given eggs of the pig whipworm. The eggs hatch within the body, grow and colonize for a limited time and then disappear, so no harm is done.

It may sound bizarre and disgusting to treat Crohnandamp;#8217;s by causing an infestation of pig whipworm in the intestines, after all, shouldnandamp;#8217;t we in Western civilization be celebrating that weandamp;#8217;ve eradicated these pests from our systems with our sanitized culture? Weandamp;#8217;re the first people in history to be worm free, so whereandamp;#8217;s the logic behind this therapy?

As ridiculous as it seems, when you learn all the facts behind helminthic therapy, youandamp;#8217;ll find that itandamp;#8217;s not as crazy as it sounds.

You see, Crohnandamp;#8217;s disease occurs when the small intestine becomes inflamed. It is believed by many medical researchers that this inflammation is the result of the immune systemandamp;#8217;s improper response to regular gut flora. Thus, by introducing pig worms to the body, the immune system is provided with an actual target and will stop its assault on the natural gut flora in Crohnandamp;#8217;s sufferers.

In short, worms help to regulate the immune system.

It is interesting to note, that many medical researchers believe that there is a link between Crohnandamp;#8217;s disease and lack of worms within the system. Crohnandamp;#8217;s is a disease of the 20th century, and primarily develops in people who live in Western industrialized countries were sanitation is high and worms no longer exist.

Therefore, it is possible that the lack of worms within the body may be partly or totally responsible for bowel disorders such as Crohnandamp;#8217;s disease.

Medical studies are being conducted to find out what happens when worms are introduced back into peopleandamp;#8217;s bodies. The hope is that worms will re-instruct the immune system on proper response to inflammation and eradicate the disease.

Most Crohnandamp;#8217;s patients who participate in helminthic therapy studies are given the pig whipworm eggs, which are dissolved in a drink they ingest. As was previously mentioned, the whipworms hatch, develop and colonize, but they only live for a short time period.

So far, the success rate of these studies has been high, as more than two thirds of the patients who participated in the study for a 6 month period, experienced remission, while others who didnandamp;#8217;t go into remission still found the treatment helpful. Furthermore, researchers are finding that even those who unsuccessfully responded to conventional treatment for Crohnandamp;#8217;s, are benefiting from helminthic therapy

There appears to be no side effects or complications with this treatment as none have been reported. However, research and studies are still being conducted on pig whipworm infestation as a therapy.

Only time will tell if the re-infestation of worms is the cure for Crohnandamp;#8217;s disease. Nonetheless, the future certainly looks promising. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
Despite the alternative treatment methods one uses to treat Crohn's symptoms, in many cases, especially severe case of the disease, these treatments are often not enough. Most people still require medications to help control symptoms and put the disease in remission. A new type of medication that shows promise is Anti-TNF drugs.

A number of recent medical studies have found that anti-TNF may be an effective way to treat those who suffer from moderate to severe Crohn's disease. What exactly is anti-TNF and how is it beneficial? The following information will help you better understand this medication and why it may be a breakthrough treatment for Crohn's sufferers.

What is anti-TNF and how does it work? It is a group of medications that have been specially designed to locate tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) a cytokine protein created by the immune system. Anti-TNF works to find TNF-alpha in the bloodstream, and then removes it by binding it to blood cells and cell membranes before it reaches the intestine and causes inflammation. This treatment does not directly treat inflammation; it targets the immune system which helps alleviate inflammation.

Studies have found that cells which are affected by Crohn's disease contain TNF-alpha, leaving many researchers to believe that the overproduction of TNF-alpha may be the leading cause of intestinal inflammation that results in Crohn's disease. Thus, the theory is that by stopping TNF-alpha from reaching the intestines of Crohn's sufferers, they'll be able to find relief from their symptoms and prevent future attacks. In addition, studies are also finding that the use of anti-TNF for treating Crohn's appears to be helpful in preventing and healing fistulas.

How can anti-TNF treatment help fistulas? It can help prevent the formation of fistulas by reducing attacks of Crohn's and putting the disease in remission. As far as healing fistulas, anti-TNF medication is found to be effective when used in combination with surgery, particularly in those who suffer from complex fistulas. Studies found that using anti-TNF treatment with surgery successfully healed the fistula without recurrence.

The most studied anti-TNF drug used for treating Crohn's patients is Infliximab, also known as Remicade. Multiple studies have proven that infliximab is both an effective and well tolerated treatment for managing acute Crohn's disease. In fact, because this particular anti-TNF has been so successful, it has obtained the approval of the European Medicines Evaluation Agency and the FDA.

Of course, like any radical treatment, infliximab still presents some problems even though it is considered to be a medical breakthrough for treating Crohn's. For instance, due to the fact that it contains a mouse protein, it can cause a delayed allergic reaction in some people. Furthermore, it increases the risk of infection, and is not deemed a safe remedy for people who suffer from or have had certain conditions including, cancer, congestive heart failure, tuberculosis and seizures.

In addition, there are concerns about immunogenicity occurring with the anti-TNF antibody which could cause the development of lymphoproliferative disorders and human antichimeric antibodies (HACA). Thus, more studies need to be conducted to further establish what the exact role anti-TNF antibodies play in maintaining the remission of Crohn's, and how long the treatment will remain effective in patients who respond well to it.

Although Infliximab is the primary anti-TNF treatment used for Crohn's, other anti-TNF medication being studied for possible treatment for Crohn's disease include etanercept (Enbrel) and adalimumab (Humira).

Only time will tell if anti-TNF antibodies is the breakthrough treatment that Crohn's symptom sufferers have been waiting for. Neverthless, the future looks bright. <bio>For more information on other ways to treat http://natural-crohns-disease-relief.com/blog, please visit http://natural-crohns-disease-relief.com, where you can sign up for a free newsletter. </bio>

Dietary recommendations must be individualized in order to suit the various dietary needs of individual patients. The diet recommendation you get will depend on which part of the intestine affected. Aside from that, this disease is not static -- changing over time. Your eating patterns need to reflect those changes. The vital objective in creating your own special diet is to try and achieve a well balanced diet that is healthy and nutritious.

The only way you'll know if your diet is working is to test it rigorously. If you cut down on hard to digest carbohydrates you should see a lessening of your gas, bloating, cramping and diarrhea. But be aware that the diet will only treat your symptoms; it will not cure your Crohn's.

Foods to be avoided

There are no rules or recommendations on the food that should be avoided. Nevertheless, it is important to distinguish between an allergy to a certain type of food as opposed to an intolerance for that type of food. Most people usually have food intolerances that they may think of as an allergy. An elimination test is the idea way to select the food that must be avoided or at least reduced.

There are many books available that will tell you how to conduct an elimination diet. You should also keep a food and symptom diary on your own. This will help you identify which foods cause your symptoms to get worse, and which foods you can still enjoy.

It's also important to remember that it's not only the amount of food that a patient takes in, but rather eating more of the right foods to promote good health. The ideal daily intake should be a combination of a variety of foods from all food groups. If you can tolerate them, it's good to add meat, fish, poultry and dairy products for protein. Bread, cereal, starches, fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of carbohydrates.

Likewise, margarine and oils are sources of fat.

Fluid intake

A big part of Crohn's disease is diarrhea, and with it the danger of dehydration. Dehydration happens when fluid intake fails to keep up with diarrhea, and can also effect kidney functions.

Crohn's patients often have a high incidence of kidney stones that make the Crohn's even worse. Severe dehydration as well as salt loss creates a feeling of weakness. This is why it is so critical for Crohn's patients to take in ample amounts of fluids especially during warm weather when the skin tends to lose a large amount of moisture and salt.

The way to prevent dehydration is to drink at least 70 ounces of liquid a day. It is also better to sip rather than gulp the liquid, since gulping tends to introduce air in the digestive system that can cause additional discomfort.

The importance of nutrition to Crohn's patients

Crohn's disease can leave some patients with problems in their small intestines, and can result in malnutrition. Not only the loss of appetite, but this chronic condition tends to aggravate the calorie needs of the body, especially during flare-ups. Beyond this, Crohn's can also lead to the poor digestion and malabsorption of dietary protein, fat, carbohydrates, water and other vitamins and minerals.

Correct and proper nutrition is one way of restoring your health. That is why it is so important to work hard to keep yourself from becoming malnourished.

If you suspect you have Crohn's disease, you should first consult your primary care physician before taking other steps. Careful diagnosis and monitoring is the key to living comfortably with Crohn's. <bio>By Sharon Dobson.
Living with any chronic disease can be a challenge, and Crohn's is no exception. The extremely painful flare-ups make day-to-day living seem impossible and when the disease is in remission, the stress of worrying about the next one can be almost as bad. So, how do deal with these flare-ups when they happen?

A Crohn's flare-up is usually associated with the onset of symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, weight loss, abdominal pain and rectal bleeding, a loss of appetite and diarrhea.

The first step is being able to recognize the risk factors involved in dealing with flare-ups. Maybe the easiest risk factor to avoid is exposure to tobacco products, weather you're smoking them yourself or if your family members or friends are. Another major risk factor for Crohn's flare-ups is stress. While it's impractical to think that you can remove stress from your life completely, making a concerted effort to try to limit the amount of stress can seriously reduce the amount of and severity of Crohn's flare-ups. Things like yoga or medication or even just making time in your schedule to read a good book can be great ways to relax and stave off the stress monster.

Another possible trigger for Crohn's disease is a woman's menstrual cycle. Many women who suffer from Crohn's experience an increase in flare-ups during their period. It's recommended that women who experience this keep a diary over a period of months to look for trends and help develop a treatment regiment with your doctor to put an end to the cycle.

The use of some over the counter drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) have also been linked to Crohn's flare-ups. If you need a non-prescription pain killer, consult your doctor to see what kind is right for you.

Treatment for these flare-ups fall into three basic categories: drug treatment, nutritional adjustments and surgery.

The most common drug to treat Crohn's are anti-inflammatories, such as Sulfasalazine. This drug has shown to work for a majority of Crohn's sufferers, but it's not a cure-all. And like with all drugs, there are side effects such as nausea, vomiting and headache.

If you have moderate to severe Crohn's, the FDA has approved a drug called Remicade. The drug actually blocks the bodies inflammatory response. This drug is only used for patients who don't respond to more traditional treatments.

Nutritional supplements are another common way to deal with Crohn's flare-ups. This course of action is geared to those that don't want to put medications in their bodies and are looking for a more natural alternative. Foods to avoid, such as spicy foods, whole grains and dairy products are a good first step. Drinking high protein shakes to make up for the fact that a patients intestines are so ravaged so that they don't absorb nutrients anymore is another common way to help treat the disease. These are especially common in kids who need nutrients to grow.

A large number of Crohn's patients will need surgery at some point to deal with the long-term effects of the disease. Sufferers are warned, however, that removing a section of intestine doesn't cure the disease, but may be necessary if that area becomes to deteriorated by ulcers. It should be used as a last resort. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Crohn's Disease.
In the realm of disorders that affect the digestive tract there is often some confusion over diagnosing specific conditions. Many of these disorders tend to overlap in terms of symptoms and signs. Since it is often difficult to distinguish one form of irritable bowel disease (IBD) from another, diagnosis is often a time-consuming procedure wrought with the painstaking approach of trial-and-error.

Two forms of IBD that are frequently confused are Crohn's Disease and colitis. Each of these diseases is strikingly similar in symptomology. Each condition can result in severe diarrhea, extensive episodes of abdominal cramping, loss of energy, fever, reduced appetite, and weight loss. Each of these diseases is caused by tissue inflammation. According to current data up to two million people in the United States have either Crohn's Disease or colitis.

Crohn's Disease usually affects the small intestine, however, it can manifest in other places throughout the body including the esophagus, stomach, appendix, anus, duodenum, and large intestine, colitis, on the other hand, strictly affects the colon.

Sufferers of both Crohn's Disease and colitis experience periods where the respective diseases fade into remission. Each, however, is marked by the tendency to experience sudden flare-ups which can drastically reduce quality of life. While the physical symptoms are similar, the psychological effects from the diseases also mimic one another. Many sufferers fall into depression and withdraw from social situations due to the fear of sudden flare-ups. Surprisingly, one of the most commonly prescribed medications for Crohn's and colitis is antidepressants.

Treatment, disregarding the emotional impact of these forms of IBD, is also similar. Drugs are generally the first option. The classes of these drugs include antibiotics, immune suppressants, biologic therapy, immunomodulators, and corticosteroids.

Drugs will not cure either disease. Colitis can be cured, but surgery to remove the colon is required. Since Crohn's can affect a wider region of the body, surgery can alleviate some of the more severe symptoms, but this does not mean that the disease cannot spring up in other places, thus it remains incurable.

Experts on IBDs recommend similar methods of approaching the maintenance of each disease on a daily basis. Exercise, reducing stress levels, maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding certain foods, taking various vitamins and supplements, and keeping a food diary can all be excellent ways of keeping the diseases in check. With either condition it is important to schedule regular medical check ups to ensure serious damage to the digestive tract is avoided. <bio>Sharon Dobson has an interest in Health related topics.
Though Crohn's disease is often contained within the digestive system, it can affect other parts of the body. Most people worry about the more obvious symptoms and problems that can go along with this condition, but a different complication of Crohn `s disease may pop up when they least expect it to.

Though vision and eye problems are not very common, and will only happen with ten percent of Crohn's patients, it is something to watch out for when a flare up happens. These are usually very easily corrected, but they should be taken care of as soon as they are noticed.

Probably the most commonly reported eye problem that is associated with Crohn's disease is Uveitis. This usually causes red eyes, loss of vision or blurred vision, and a possible problem with the eyes being more sensitive to light. If you have these symptoms, you should go in to see your eye doctor for help, remembering to tell them you have crohn's.

They will examine the eye wall to see if there is inflammation present. If there is, you may be given a eye drop that contains a steroid to help alleviate the pressure and the discomfort. When a patient manages to get their other Crohn's symptoms under control, this problem will go away as well. If left untreated, glaucoma is possible.

Another of the more common problems that can happen with the eyes in relation to Crohn's is dry eyes. This happens when the body is not getting enough vitamin A, which is what the eyes need to remain healthy. The eyes might feel dry, itchy, and irritated. Night vision can become compromised. If this problem is not treated eye infection can occur. As long as a person seeks medical attention early, a supplement of vitamin A and artificial tears for comfort might be all that is needed

Much like Uveitis, Espiscleritis is an inflammation problem within the eye, but this is found in the whites of the eyes and might be very noticeable. One of the first things you are going to notice is that the eyes appear to be very red. This is because the blood vessels in the eyes are inflamed. You may also notice pain or pressure when you have this. It can also be cleared up with special eye drops, and will clear up with other Crohn's related symptoms once remission is achieved. You might also get Keratopahthy. However, you may never know it. It is painless, and there is no treatment needed.

If you find that you have a complication of Crohn `s disease that relates to the eye, you should see your doctor at once to get it cleared up. Though most of the time these are not huge issues, they can be if they are left untreated. You should avoid activities that might be dangerous when being treated for vision problems. Don't drive, and let everyone in your life know that your vision is compromised. <bio>Grab your free copy of Sharon Dobson's brand new Crohn's Disease Newsletter here at http://natural-crohns-disease-relief.com?source=is which is overflowing with tips to help you understand the various complication of crohn 's disease and how to combat them. </bio>
