The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped line of volcanoes and deep ocean trenches that runs around the Pacific Rim: from New Zealand up through Tonga, New Guinea, Indonesia, Japan, the Aleutian Island Chain, Alaska, and down the West Coast of Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central America, finally ending where the southern end of Chile meets Argentina near Cape Horn at the tip of South America.

While doing research for my adventure novel TSUNAMI, I found that this highly unstable seismic zone is called the Ring of Fire for good reason. 90% of the world's earthquakes, over 70% of volcano eruptions, and most of the tsunamis on Planet Earth are spawned around the Pacific Rim, where oceanic (seafloor) plates collide with and relentlessly slide under the continental (land) plates.

The lithosphere is the name given to the earth's crust plus a portion of the earth's upper mantle, which is the layer just below the crust. In the theory of plate tectonics, the lithosphere is broken into 15 to 20 pieces called tectonic plates. Geologists can't seem to agree on the exact number. The plates range in size from only a few thousand square miles to hundreds of thousands of square miles. The crustal portion of continental plates averages approximately 22 miles in thickness. Oceanic plate crusts are 4 miles thick on average. Average thickness of the entire lithosphere is about 75 miles. Temperature at the base of the lithosphere is over 2300 F.

The tectonic plates float on the hot viscous material that makes up the asthenosphere, or lower portion of the earth's upper mantle, which is estimated to be about 250 miles deep. The floating plates are in constant, though very slow, motion. The rate of tectonic plate drift varies from about 1 inch per year to as high as 6 inches per year. Oceanic plates tend to drift into and gradually slide under the continental plates. This process is called subduction, and is the underlying cause of earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis in the Ring of Fire.

There are many subduction zones, where oceanic plates converge with continental plates, all around the Pacific Rim, home of the Ring of Fire. In fact, the Ring of Fire is a product of this subduction process. When an oceanic plate slips under, or subducts, a continental plate, it gradually slides deep below the earth's crust into the lower mantle where the temperature reaches 2000 to 4000 degrees F. The dense material of the oceanic plate melts under the intense heat, combines with water molecules, and rises into the upper mantle and up through cracks and seams of the earth's crust as magma fueling the volcanoes and building the mountain ranges circling the Pacific Rim.

Over many millions of years of seismic activity, the Ring of Fire has created a long line of famous mountain ranges and volcanoes. The Cascade Range in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California with several peaks over 14,000 ft. is a good example. Among the many active Cascade volcanoes are Mt. Baker, Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood, Mt. Shasta, and Mt. Lassen.

Some peaks of the Andes Range in South America exceed 22,000 ft. The Andes are also home to over 200 volcanoes, 36 of which have had one or more eruptions in the past 200 years. Among the largest and most active are Mt. Cotopaxi in Ecuador, Ojos del Salado on the Chile-Argentina border, Mt. Gualatiri in Chile, and Licancabur/San Pedro in Bolivia.

Alaska has some of the world's most active volcanoes. The Mt. Redoubt eruption in 1989 shot an ash plume 45,000 ft. high. When a KLM jet flew into the plume at 30,000 ft., its engines ingested the volcanic ash and flamed out. The plane descended 13,000 ft. without power before the crew finally restarted the engines and landed safely in Anchorage. All 4 engines had to be replaced. In addition to Mt. Redoubt, some of Alaska's most active volcanoes are Mt. Spurr, Mt. Novarupta, and Mt. Katmai.

The Aleutian Islands are an arc of 300 small volcanic islands extending from southwest Alaska for 1200 miles to Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. There are 57 active volcanoes in the Aleutians, and 82 eruptions have been recorded there since 1900.

Japan's major volcanoes include Mt. Bandai, which had a catastrophic eruption in 1980, equaling the Mt. St. Helens blowout in intensity and amount of material ejected. Mt. Unzen on Kyushu Island erupted in 1991, killing 43 people. The Unzen explosion of 1792 was Japan's most disastrous volcanic event, killing 15,000. Mt. Fuji and Mt. Usu have recently erupted.

Krakatau and Tambora in Indonesia, Mts. Pinatubo and Mayon in the Philippines, and Rabaul in New Guinea have all had historic blowouts that killed many thousands of people and destroyed thousands of homes.

The subduction process of the Pacific Rim, in addition to creating mountain ranges and fueling volcanoes, causes earthquakes on land and under the sea; and it is undersea earthquakes that start tsunamis. Taken together, those three destructive forces -- earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis -- have taken untold millions of lives. The Ring of Fire has been an important force in shaping the topography of the planet, but it has also been and continues to be the place where trouble starts.<bio>Gordon Gumpertz, author of TSUNAMI, is a working novelist who writes suspense-packed adventure novels featuring believable characters caught up in the dynamic forces of natural and man-made disasters. His books achieve a sense of immediacy and realism through extensive background research. For more, visit Tsunami.</bio>

In other words, it's how to consciously start dreaming or how to "break into" a dream you realize you're having and take control.

One of the common techniques for inducing lucid dreams is called MILD, which stands for mnemonic induction of lucid dreams.

Don't worry, it's easier done than said!

In essence, this is like putting an alarm note in your cell phone. You're setting yourself a mental note to do something in the future.

Specifically, whilst you are in a dream state in the future.

Decide that you are going to briefly wake up the next time you notice you're dreaming. As soon as you wake, recall as much of the dream as possible. If you're regularly using a journal already, this should be a reasonably simple thing to do.

Then allow yourself to drift back off into sleep. Dr LaBerge, who invented this technique, claimed this is the best time to set your intention for your dream.

As you start to drift, tell yourself something along the lines of "Next time I'm dreaming, I will actually remember that I am dreaming". The exact wording you use is a lot less important than just remembering to tell yourself this, over and over again as you drift back into a sleeping state.

As you repeat that phrase or mantra, see yourself back in the dream you've just been having. Or, if nothing is particularly clear about that dream, another one that you've had recently. If that doesn't work, visualize yourself as though you're watching a movie of yourself dreaming.

Don't concentrate too hard, otherwise you'll stop yourself from going into a dream state and will find yourself wide awake through too much concentrating. It's far better to fall asleep during this process than keep yourself awake with it.

Ideally, do the next step whilst you're still in the process of falling asleep.

See yourself in the dream and notice something that clearly indicates it is a dream. Anything will do for this: a dragon wagging its tail whilst cooking a unicorn with its breath would be exceptionally clear. But its your dream, not mine, so notice anything that gives you a clear signal that you are in a dream state.

Say confidently to yourself "I'm dreaming". But continue with this twilight zone experience and allow yourself to drift further into the land of slumber.

You can use this process to set the intention of your dream at the same time if you want to. It's not essential to do this, but it can help point your dreams in the direction you want them to follow.

Keep repeating the process of setting your intention of remembering to notice when you are dreaming and to tell yourself that you've actually recognized it's a dream when you do notice. With a little practice, you'll start to become accomplished at spotting when it's a dream, not reality. You should then be able to enter a lucid dreaming state almost at will. <bio>Find out more about lucid dreaming at http://www.squidoo.com/dreamingluciddreams and discover the different things you can do to become a lucid dreamer: http://www.squidoo.com/dreamingluciddreams </bio>

Many expectant parents assume that they will never have to worry about how to get baby to sleep through the night. After all, you've read all the parenting books, and you're prepared for anything, right?

The truth is that we all go into the parenting process a little bit naive and believe that we'll be "immune" from these very common problems. Before you know it, YOU are the parents who are up during the wee hours of the morning desperately "hushing" your baby and trying to remember what those parenting books said to do. As you watch the sun rise yet again, you may resign yourself to the fact that this is the way every parent feels, but it doesn't have to be this way!

You can learn how to get baby to sleep through the night much faster than you might think. There are different techniques that many parents talk about that may or may not work for your child. First, many parents will report to you that you need to establish a bedtime routine. What this means is that it is important to eat dinner at about the same time, play with your child, bathe your child, and then put them in bed awake and allow them to fall asleep on their own.

In theory this works, but depending on the age of your child it may not be at all easy to get this routine to stick, and your little one will likely not just drop off into slumber the first night, or even the first week. Many parents give up on this idea because they simply do not have the patience or energy left to allow this method to work.

Other parents will tell you that the "cry it out" method is how to get baby to sleep through the night, but to many, this is not a very attractive idea. The theory here is that the child will eventually learn that -- no matter how much they cry -- they are eventually going to have to fall asleep on their own. Eventually the child will no longer cry at all, they will simply drift off and rest through the night.

Again, this strategy can work, but many parents have strong feeling against listening to their child cry for long periods of time. There is also a lot of literature on the market that will make parents think twice about this technique, although people have been using it for ages.

If you are at your wits end and you need to learn how to get baby to sleep through the night once and for all, visit http://www.sleepsense.net for information about "The Sleep Sense Program." This system -- created by a professional infant and child sleep consultant -- is very easy to use and can teach parents the techniques they need to get their child to fall asleep on their own -- and to stay asleep all night long! <bio>For information on how to get baby to sleep through the night, baby sleep, child sleep, toddler sleep, infant sleep visit http://www.sleepsense.net </bio>

I got medals in International Physics Olympiad. I love physics. Most of you don't and that's perfectly fine. You're probably superior in many other fields than I am.

In Physics I learnt the nature, the "Tao" of inanimate objects. If I drop stones, the stones will fall to the ground with constant acceleration

Whether I want to drop stones, launch cannon balls, or build buildings, we use few principles to analyze and explain it all. That's the beauty of physics, and Math.

Evolution theory is like that. However, rather than analyzing inanimate objects, evolution theory analyze living objects, including, the most important ones, humans.

Obviously it's far more lucrative to understand humans' nature than a stones' nature.

People get rich or poor based on how smart they are at manipulating, ugh, I mean, motivating, and other humans.

However, humans' natures are very complicated and confusing. If only there is a way to simplify those natures into very few principles, we can have the benefit humans understanding with the simplicity of physics.

Evolution theory is, in a sense, like social sciences, like economics, which I also like. However, economics theories don't really tell us about humans' typical nature.

In economy class, for example, we are told that humans' want to maximize their interests. What are humans' interests? Human's interests are whatever they want to maximize. That's a circular definition isn't it?

Economic theories can explain humans' general interests where mistakes in correctly understanding humans' preference are small.

For example, economic theory is good in analyzing money. Money is a very general preference. Those who like chocolate will want more money, those who like cheese also like money. So incorrectly understanding whether people like chocolate or cheese will not cause a lot of problem in economic theory.

In economic classes they even use words like widgets to describe their ideas.

So evolution theory is like the complement that fills the gap of economic theory. I'll explain more in part 2 of this article. <bio>Jim Thio is a silver medalist in International Physics Olympiad. He's learning evolution theory to understand humans' nature.
Having a solid understanding of music theory is one thing that will help you be more successful as you learn to play the piano. You will have a better understanding of what music is all about, including the chords and scales that make up the songs you love to play.

No matter what instrument you play, knowing music theory can benefit you. Many people start out on the piano, as this instrument is versatile and easy to learn on. Music is a combination of chords, notes, and scales that, when played in a certain sequence, produce a certain type of sound and song. On a piano you have the freedom to create a variety of combinations of chords and melodies all at once, which makes this instrument ideal for mastering theory concepts.

There are music theory books available to buy, but many times you need a qualified teacher to help you muddle through them. Not so when you learn online, as online courses are designed to make sure you can learn completely on your own. The guides and lesson plans are organized so that anyone at any level can understand the concepts and apply them accordingly. This is a great benefit for many because they have the freedom to learn at their own pace without the pressure of a music teacher or class to report to every week.

Learning on the internet through an online piano course is one easy way to start learning music theory and polishing your piano skills in your own home without having to fuss with other outside activities. You decide when you want to learn your next lesson and when you have the confidence to move on to more difficult songs. Many people are discovering how easy it is to learn online, and there are a variety of course options available so you can learn exactly the type of music or songs you want at your own pace.

Music theory gives you an advantage when it comes to playing the piano or any other instrument you choose to pursue. You will be able to read your own music, as well as have a clear understanding of what chords to play to get the sound you want. As you learn on your own and progress through the lessons, you will soon be able to play any piece of music you want to.

Hear and Play is a website dedicated to providing a unique course structure for students interested in learning to play the piano and mastering many music theory concepts.
Dr. William Glasser developed the concepts of Choice Theory upon the foundational work of Dr. William Power's Control Theory. Both theories provide an explanation of human behavior=97Powers focuses mostly on perception while Glasser expanded his ideas to include basic human needs and the concept of total behavior=97including a person's actions, thinking, feeling and physiology.

Choice Theory provides an explanation of human behavior. Once learned, individuals will understand how everyone is doing the best they can to get their needs met. This understanding generates an empathy for other people's situation and a desire to assist them in making more responsible choices.

So what does this have to do with you? Here are the top ten things Choice Theory can do for you and your organization.

1. When individuals in your company learn and practice the concepts of Choice Theory, their life satisfaction with be increased, making them more pleasant and productive.

2. When your leaders in the company learn and apply the concepts of Choice Theory, greater teamwork develops and quality of your goods or services is enhanced.

3. When individuals learn and practice Choice Theory in their personal lives, they have better relationships with the significant others, their children and the other important people in their lives so there is less drama to deal with in the workplace.

4. Choice Theory is compatible with creating a spirit-driven culture in the workplace. Having an identified corporate culture helps you maintain a competitive edge by getting the right people on your "company bus" and keeping them there.

5. Choice Theory can actually provide you with a vehicle for getting the wrong people off your corporate bus. You know how you have some employees that simply aren't the correct fit for your organization. Well, Choice Theory can provide you with a model that will help others evaluate if your environment is where they really want to work and you can rid yourself of those who truly are not contributing to the overall mission and vision of your company.

6. Having the right people in the right place at work leads to increased employee retention.

7. When you implement Choice Theory in your workplace, employees display more cooperation and less resistance. Their needs are being met at work and they understand the usefulness of what they are being asked to do.

8. Using Choice Theory at work, helps to eliminate the fear factor. There is less of an "us" versus "them" mentality and more of a "we" atmosphere. Once fear is reduced, people will speak up and problems truly can be viewed as opportunities for change and growth.

9. Using Choice Theory requires people to evaluate the quality of their own work, increasing personal ownership for the value of the goods or services produced.

10. And finally, teaching choice theory to employees with attract the people you want to your business. Not only with the "right" employees show up but you will attract the customers you want, as well. Outside vendors will want some of what you have.

Don't wait. Get started today. Choice Theory workshops and personal and/or group coaching will make the difference in your company, giving you the competitive edge you want. <bio>Kim Olver, MS, NCC, LPC has been involved with social service agencies since 1980, holding a variety of positions from case manager to Assistant Executive Director to Director of Training and Development.
Economic theory to Evolution theory is like Math to Physics.

If I drop a stone with a known constant acceleration, and hear a "bumping" sound after a certain time, I can predict the distance the stone drop based on the time (ignoring sound speed).

That part is Math. It's not physics. It's Math. You see, Math teaches us what's obvious by it self. Math doesn't teach us why the stone fall in the first place and why the acceleration is constant.

The fact that if we drop a stone it will, approximately, accelerate downward with a constant acceleration is physics.

The same way, economic theory will correctly predict that those who like to eat apple will be willing to sacrifice some of this money to buy apple so he can eat it. However, economic theory, will not teach us why people like to eat apple in the first place instead of humans' dung.

Economic theories do not, however, explain why some people are commies? Why some people are religious bigots? Why your priests talk against free sex way more than they talk against stealing or robbing? Why the commies tend to support free sex? Why religious fundamentalists often oppose free sex but support free trade?

Evolution theory is the most accurate and powerful method to explain all those within the fewest principles. That's why I love evolution theory so much.

More importantly, evolution theories do not use too much math, unlike Physics or Economy. So I can communicate more fluently with the majority of my web visitors.

Understand those few principles, and we'll have good guesses of what's really going on behind the events in our life. We, understanding the real problem can then choose more appropriate solutions.

It just happens that those with hidden political motives are often those who use out of this world metaphysical justification for their causes. Such justifications usually involve abstract concepts, like morality, or faith based irrational beliefs, like religions.

And that's, as we shall see, is the reason behind religious opposition toward evolution theory.

Powerful and influential politicians, religious leaders and dictators have killed billions of people to prevent those people from even consider the truthfulness of conclusions we can know from evolution theory.

Billions more have been poorer, starve, died, or even tortured, due to lies and prejudices embraced by still the majority of humans' population.

Thanks to freedom of speech and internet technology you'll see the stuff so many.

So tune on. I'll write about the basic principles of evolution theory latter. <bio>Jim Thio is a silver medalist in International Physics Olympiad. He's learning evolution theory to understand humans' nature.
350 years ago William Harvey was the first to state that the hearts main purpose was to circulate blood throughout the body. This was in direct contrast to the rest of the world that was in the thought process that the heart was the center for emotions and love while the brain was the main area for circulation. This revelation led to what we now know as evolutionary psychology or the theory of cognitive structure for the survival of the person.

The theory goes that the human body is nothing more than a mass of systems that work together in unison to survive. The evolution came into play as we were being formed, when the body is made to be a collection of different resources for the rest of the body to use at will. This also speaks to the central nervous system, more specifically the brain. This theory contends that the brain is not one organ but a collection of many systems that have evolved over time to become a mass processor for the information that we take in.

Again it goes back to the natural selection debate at this point where it states that the body is functionally responsible for its own survival because it is acting as several organisms that are designed to fight off the attacks. Now the theory is not complete in this area as there are no real predators of the human being, so many believe that natural selection does not apply. This also brings up the ethics issue because if the theory is taken at face value with no explanation then it is possible to read into it that the sick and old can be picked off to make way for the new.

The primary function for the evolutionary psychology theory is the study of the brain and how it can function in the manner that it does. While we have come a long way over the years in knowing how the body works, there are still hundreds if not thousands of unanswered questions about brain function. This is why this theory is in place all over the world in medical research practices. If a model of the brain can be determined that helps the medical community to understand the way that it functions it is possible to wipe out disease in many ways.

Many people believe that the brain actually has healing properties on its own. There have been many cases of patients that have severe trauma to many parts of their bodies and go into a coma. After so long they awake and are normal and functioning adults without any kind of ill side effects. <bio>Read more Science related articles at: http://www.science-mag.com </bio>

The Hawaiian Islands would not be here today if it were not for the volcanoes of the mid-Pacific. There would be no Kauai, no Lanai, no Molokai, no Oahu, no Maui, and no Big Island. They were all formed by shield volcanoes fed by a constant flow of magma from a superheated pocket in the lower mantle called a hotspot.

Shield volcanoes fueled by hotspots are different from the stratovolcanoes of the Pacific Rim. The magma pouring into shield volcanoes is mainly basalt, lighter and less viscous than the silica-based magma fueling the Pacific Rim volcanoes produced by the collision of tectonic plates.

The hotspot theory might well be demonstrated by the way in which the Hawaiian Islands were formed. The theory suggests that there is an area in the mid-Pacific hundreds of miles below the ocean floor in the earth's mantle, called The Hawaiian Hotspot. The hotspot size is estimated at 50 miles in diameter. The temperature in the hotspot is higher than that of the surrounding mantle. This intense heat melts the material from the lower part of the overriding tectonic plate and converts it into magma. The hotspot magma is lighter than the material in the rest of the mantle and rises to the earth's crust in a narrow stream called a mantle plume. The mantle plume brings magma up to the ocean floor, and a volcanic cone begins to build.

Over time, repeated eruptions produce more and more lava that continue to build the cone higher and higher, until it finally emerges above the surface of the ocean as an island many thousands of years later.

The tectonic plate on which the new Hawaiian island sits is called the Pacific Plate. The Pacific Plate moves over the stationary hotspot in a northwesterly direction at about 1 inch per year. Moving at that rate, it takes several million years for the island to clear the hotspot. Island building progresses during this long period of time, and large islands with tall volcanic mountains are created, as is the case with the island of Maui with its 10,000 ft. Haleakala volcano, and the Big Island of Hawaii with its chain of volcanoes in 13,700 ft. Mauna Kea, 13,600 ft. Mauna Loa, and currently active Kilauea.

Once the moving plate carries an island away from the hotspot plume, the volcanoes on that island go dormant and start to erode, and the plume proceeds to build the next island. Niihau and Kauai, the easternmost islands of the Hawaiian chain, were the first to be built up from the hotspot activity. The Pacific Plate continued its northwesterly movement over the hotspot and the islands of Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, and Maui were created in succession. The last island over the hotspot is the still volcanically active Big Island of Hawaii.

Just a few miles off the Big Island, a new island is starting to build. It is called Loihi, and has pushed up two miles from the ocean floor, but is still a mile beneath the surface of the ocean. It is estimated that Loihi will appear above the ocean surface in 220,000 years.

One source suggests there are 50 active hotspots throughout the world. Some, such as the Hawaiian Hotspot, lie under oceanic plates, and others under continental plates. Among the volcanic islands created by oceanic hotspots are Iceland, the Azores, the Galapagos, Samoa, the Marquesas Islands, the Society Islands, and Reunion.

The best example of continental plate hotspot activity is Yellowstone National Park. The heart of the park is an active caldera that powers hot springs, fumaroles, mud pots, and geysers such as Old Faithful. The thermal energy derives from a large hotspot underlying the caldera. This same hotspot has produced many other caldera and lava bed areas throughout the western states, as the North American Plate moves southwesterly. The Yellowstone caldera was created by a massive volcanic eruption 600,000 years ago.

In recent years, a number of scientists have challenged the idea of a stationary hotspot and of a mantle plume being the source of hotspot magma. Several other explanations have been put forth. Since hotspots are located deep in the earth's mantle, no one has ever seen one. Their existence and the way they work can only be assumed.

In contrast to hotspot island building, the big mountain ranges of the Pacific Rim, such as the Cascades in North America and the Andes in South America, were formed by stratovolcanic action, earthquakes, and uplifting of the continental plate boundaries. Earthquakes, stratovolcanoes, and uplifting are products of a process called subduction, in which the oceanic plate slides under, or subducts, the continental plate.

Stratovolcanoes tend to erupt less frequently but far more violently than hotspot volcanoes. Subduction produces magma rich in silica. This heavy and sticky material seals the heat and gasses inside the volcano and permits the pressure to build up over hundreds of years until it finally erupts, sometimes in a devastating blast.

Uplifting can be caused by the fault slippage that produces earthquakes and frees the continental plate to rise, and by the compression of one tectonic plate pushing against another. For millions of years, along the west coast of the U.S., the Pacific Plate has not only been sliding under the North American Plate, but also pressing against it. The compression has been a factor in the uplifting process.

Although most spectacular volcanic blowouts are produced by stratovolcanoes, there have also been some historic hotspot volcano blasts. The Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii had a major blowout in 1790 that killed 80 people.

Any active volcano can be considered a time bomb. There are warning signs such as swarms of tremors that sometimes precede eruptions, but no one really knows in advance exactly when a volcano will blow or how big the eruption will be.<bio>Gordon Gumpertz, author of TSUNAMI, is a working novelist who writes suspense-packed adventure novels featuring believable characters caught up in the dynamic forces of natural and man-made disasters.
A study of the inner earth helps us understand earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, and more. The earth's interior has been sorted by Gravity. Generally heavier elements tend to sink toward the center. Lighter materials have risen to become pat of the crust. This action has created distinct layers and is still in process today. The Inner Earth is composed of three main parts:

The Crust - silicate rocks, primarily granite and basalt Oceanic Crust - mostly basalt Continental Crust - igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks

The Mantle - iron and magnesium rich silicate rocks Upper Mantle Lower mantle

The Core - iron nickel alloy Outer core Inner core

The Crust The crust of the earth is very slowly growing thicker. Volcanic activity is continually adding mass to the crust. Though the crust is solid it is made up of about 12 plates. They are called Tectonic Plates. These plates are in constant motion. The movement is caused by currents in the mantle. The movement is very slow, averaging about 2 inches a year. This is about like the growth of your fingernails.

The crust is about 0.5 % of the earth's total mass. It is made up of silicate rocks such as granite and basalt.

Oceanic crust - The crust under the oceans is about 10 km thick and is generally made up of rock rich in iron and magnesium. These are primarily basalt formed by volcanic action at the mid ocean ridges. The oceanic crust is denser than continental crust.

Continental crust (continental cratons) - Where there are continents the crust is about 30 to 50 km thick. It is made up of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.

The Mantle Much less is known about the mantle than the crust. The crust we can see, measure, dig and drill. We can tell some things about the mantle by studying volcanoes and what comes out of them. Much of what we believe is true about the earths interior comes from studying Seismology. Seismology began as the study of earthquakes and the seismic waves they produced. These waves travel through the earth and move at different speeds in different materials.

The Upper Mantle Is made up of rocks rich in magnesium and iron, and poor in silica; mostly peridotites. It is about 400 km thick and is much denser than the crust. It comprise 10% of the earth's mass

The Lower mantle

It is more dense and contains a greater amount of iron than the upper mantle It is about 1900 km thick It makes up 41% of the earth's mass

The core The core is composed primarily of a nickel-iron alloy. There is an outer core that is liquid and an inner core that is solid.

Outer core

2100 km thick. About 30 % of the Earth's total mass.

Inner core

1300 km thick. About 2 % of the Earth's total mass. In studying the earth's interior:

There are distinct layers to the earth's interior. much more is known about the crust than the mantle and core. What we believe is true about the mantle and core comes from studying seismology. <bio>Learn more about the earth's interior and its rocks and minerals at http://www.rocksandminerals4u.com .
Every time that I read an article about marathon training I see something pertaining to the longest run in a marathon plan. Why is there so much controversy?

Every marathon runner or coach has his or her own theory about the longest run during marathon training. Some argue that 20 miles in long enough. Others argue running up to 30 miles. And some even say that 15 miles is long enough. Which theory is correct?

In my own opinion the two greatest coaches are Arthur Lydiard and Jack Daniels. These two coaches never had their runners run longer than 22 miles. My interpretation of their coaching system is that they based this distance on the length of time that a marathoner would run during the actual race. During marathon training a distance of 22 miles ran at slower than marathon pace would equal the time running the actual marathon.

My own theory about marathon training follows a similar pattern. I try to lengthen my long run in minutes to the amount of time that I project to be my finishing time. For example if my projected marathon goal is 3 and =BD hours. My longest run will be 3 and half hours at my long distance heart rate of between 60 and 75% mhr 3 weeks before the marathon.

Two drawbacks to this theory are under estimating your finishing time and running longer than three hours. Figuring out your estimated finishing time can be a challenge. There are many ways to estimate your finishing time. My personal choice is to take my latest half marathon finishing time and double it and add one half hour. For those whose finishing time projects out to be longer than 3 hours I would not run longer than 3 and a half hours.

A suggestion about longs runs during marathon training. When your long run time starts approaching three hours allow 14 to 21 days between these efforts. Three hour runs take a lot out of you both physically and mentally. Extra time is needed for the body and mind to adapt to these difficult efforts.

My theory about long runs during marathon training has helped to me set my own personal best times in the marathon. I believe this will allow you to reach your own marathon goals also. <bio>Curt Shryack is the author of Fatigue Nutrition and Endurance Exercise, Run2Fast, and Ultimate Training http://www.everything-running.com </bio>

Let's face it: not many of us like getting up in the morning to face the long day of work ahead. However, every working person still does this for his or her own personal reasons. These reasons make up a theory of motivation for going to work.

Most people do not work merely for the fun of it. Chances are, there is an underlying reason or reasons that drive the person to put the effort forth. Some key reasons that motivate individuals to work are:

-Money -Responsibility -Social life

Show me the money: In many cases, money certainly does make the world go around. Money is the number one reason in the theory of motivation that makes people want to work. Money earned on the job will pay bills, support a family or an individual, or be put towards a material goal. Parents may work to pay for their child's upbringing and education. A high school student may work to pay for auto insurance and possibly his or her own car. A college student may work to pay for university courses and books. Money is a highly important factor when it comes to living comfortably.

In the workplace theory of motivation, company owners and bosses understand how important money is. For this reason, they may offer employees monetary rewards or benefits for a job well done. They understand that an employee who is happy will reap prosperity for their company.

Who's the boss? On-the-job responsibility is another element in the workplace theory of motivation. Most workers take great pride in their work and in the job that they perform. People become motivated by the responsibilities that their jobs can bring. For example, an assistant manager at a retail store may do his or her best to get as many sales as possible and to learn as much as possible about management of the store. This may be due to the fact that this person has the hope of one day becoming manager of the entire store. Responsibility, therefore, is also rated highly in the theory of motivation.

The workplace as a meeting place: Some people are not concerned about salary or job advancement. Instead, they are interested in the social part of the workplace. Because of this, the desire for a social life is part of the theory of motivation in the workplace. Typically, wives who are the secondary providers in a household that does not require them to work, still take jobs because they find that staying at home is boring.

At work, they will meet friends to chat with, go out with after work hours, or simply to confide in and share experiences with. Many elderly people also take on careers for this reason. Many older people become bored with retirement or lonely staying home alone. They work in order to have a social life. Thus, a social life is also part of the theory of motivation in the workplace. <bio>Motivation Articles at http://www.Motivation-Today.com. But at least, after a long flight, you'll be able to relax during your airport transfer without being serenaded by an orchestra of naff car horns!

White paint sales take a massive rise as lines appear on roads in Canada

The first white lines to divide road lanes appeared in Canada in 1930 near the Quebec/Ontario border. The person who came up with the idea we all take for granted now was an Ontario Transport Department engineer by the name of John D.
If you still have not sampled any of the Need for Speed games on the PS2, then it is chiefly an arcade style racing game where you start off with one car and unlock more as you run through all the game's challenges.

Throughout Need for Speed Carbon, you have to continuously build up your car buying upgrades to make you better able to edge out more challenging competitors.

There are three classifications of cars to be used in this NFS game: Tuner, Muscle, and Exotic. Whichever you choose among these cars to drive, you'll eventually unlock other types of cars, which is apart from your starter type. So if you want a nice variety of cars in your collection, then that is possible.

This version of the Need for Speed game on the PS2, as previous games on the series, is not difficult to learn and play. As you would have expected of games from EA, the controls are quite responsive. The only aspect where the game seems to be flawed is when trying to 'drift' round the Canyon Corners. As the cars shift too much, your car could end up mounting over the side of the cliff.

Another thing that's worth mentioning is the button for the boost. If you play both Burnout and Need for Speed games, it is easy to mix up the controls for both this game. The L1 button is the boost button for Burnout, while R1 is for Need for Speed. Also, the controls for both these game series are quite identical, for the most part.

This game features a wide array of artists included in this latest iteration of EA's Need for Speed franchise. This time around, the developers have created an atmosphere that will help players feel like they are truly part of the game. The atmosphere is attained not only through the songs played during the game, but through the sound effects as well. EA has focused all their efforts in making this game feel like a real racing event that they have used real-life car models and recorded them accelerating, decelerating, doing slow and fast turns. Then they integrate this into the game, giving players the feel and illusion of driving a real car model on the track.

This game also features some good Drift races that you can choose to partake in, but you may also wrap up an entire run without having to compete in even one Drift event for the entire time. Also worth noting is that Most Wanted is a much lengthier game which requires you to complete the Blacklist, contend with 14 bosses, while in NFS Carbon you only have to compete with 4 bosses all in all.

For you to make this a truly rewarding gaming experience, you need to constantly improve your car. And to make sure that you have the best car possible, you can utilize the all-new Autosculpt feature which enables you to customize your own car, as well as its design. You can let your imagination take over this one.

Although lacking an online feature, you can't really take anything away from Need for Speed Carbon on the PlayStation 2. It has got all the right goods! <bio>Samual writes for the Sony PlayStation 2 website Absolute PS2 News which includes: http://www.absolute-playstation.com/ps2/playstation2-cheat-codes/need-for-s= peed-carbon-cheats.htm need for speed carbon cheat codes, help and guides for this game. </bio>
