Unless they happen to come from a family that repeatedly has people living happily into their hundreds, most people do not like the idea of becoming old. Basically, that is because they dread all of the different things that could go wrong with their health. It seems that once a person turns fifty, he or she automatically end up needing to check their colon.

For the people who dread the traditional <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/colonoscopy+procedure" rel="tag">colonoscopy procedure, technology has given them the virtual colonoscopy. However, in order to truly appreciate the advancements that a virtual colonoscopy has brought, one must first understand the tradition method.

So, chances are that when you reach middle age, your doctor will tell you that in addition to your usual blood work, you will need a colonoscopy once a year. The idea behind this rather archaic experiment is that the person will have to abstain from certain foods for several days, pretty much restricting themselves to a liquid diet.

Then, before the date of the actual procedure, they will have to drink a specialized drink that completely clears the colon. This means that the patient had better have something to read and like the décor of their bathroom, as they will be spending a couple of hours in it.

On the day of the actual procedure, the patient will have to not only expose his or her bottom to the medical team, but will have to have a long probe inserted up it. This is to check for polyps in the colon, which could prove fatal if they are not properly diagnosed in advance.

Needless to say, the virtual colonoscopy comes as a welcome relief to patients who really do not want to be probed. However, this does not mean that the patient is not still subjected to that drink the night before, because the colon still needs to be properly cleansed.

At this point, patients will probably ask what the particulars of a virtual colonoscopy entail. Well, if the patient has ever had an x-ray, they are already ahead of the situation, because that is basically what this procedure is. Thanks to the advancement in x-ray technology, bones and teeth are not the only things that can be seen in detail. Now, organs and tissue can also be seen as well, and in a three-dimensional format.

This procedure is somewhat of a hybrid between a regular x-ray and a CT scan. While elements of the regular x-ray are used, the patient is in an enclosed space similar to that of what is required in a CT scan. Those who are claustrophobic might not be very happy with this, but they will certainly be pleased that they will no longer have to deal with the invasiveness of the original procedure.

As with the original procedure, this will be performed in an outpatient facility. While the original procedure required local anesthesia, this procedure does not. In fact, all the patient has to do is wear a medical robe and lay as still as possible.<bio>More information on virtual colonoscopy, ct scan treatments and an Irving body scan clinic of Texas in your area is just a click away.</bio>

The human body is something that really is quite astonishing. It is composed of seventy percent water, and lots of veins and muscles. On the average day, a person is not even aware of the many processes that are going on in his or her body.

While a middle-aged person might be happily unaware of bodily processes, the fact remains that various tests, such as the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/virtual+colonoscopy" rel="tag">virtual colonoscopy, should be performed in order to maintain optimal health. In order to understand why a virtual colonoscopy might be needed in the first place, it is important to understand the overall function on the colon.

Okay, it might as well be said that most people simply associate the colon with the posterior. Actually, the colon comprises a section of the intestines. A person who eats a lot of fiber has a much better chance to have a healthy colon than a person who eats a lot of starchy and otherwise unhealthy food. These are the people who really should have a virtual colonoscopy done as soon as they can.

The colon is, obviously, the place from which waste is eliminated. A person might be fastidiously clean on the outside, but the food that the person eats can create quite a health problem on the inside. A virtual colonoscopy thus becomes a medical priority, because of all the "wear and tear" on the colon over the years.

You could probably talk to any person about the topic of a colonoscopy, and chances are at least a slight grimace will cross their visage. This procedure has long been associated with the invasiveness of a long probe being placed up the posterior. In fact, it was such an invasively painful procedure for some people that they would avoid having it done.

It is obviously very important to make sure that a patient's health is unaffected by the choice to forgo a medical test that could potentially save their life. Thus, the technological world of medicine, finally devised a way for the colon to be checked without probing.

In this new version of the colonoscopy, the patient will be asked by the doctor to either drink a prescribed drink or take a laxative the night before the procedure to make sure that the colon is completely clean. This way, irregularities such as polyps will be able to be easily found. The person will not be allowed to eat the day of the procedure for obvious reasons.

The scan itself combines regular x-ray technology with computer technology to create a three-dimensional view of the colon. One definite advantage to this new procedure over the original one is that it only takes about 10 minutes to complete.

However, while this newer version is indeed minimally invasive, it is still invasive from the point of view that a small tube has to be inserted in the rectum for the scan to actually work. However, it is not the long tube that was originally used. So, for those who are over fifty, definitely look into having this procedure done.<bio>More information on virtual colonoscopy, CT scan and a Beverly Hills scan doctor of California in your area is just a click away.</bio>

Colonoscopy is the process of examining the rectum and interior part of the colon (lower part of large intestine) for the sake of estimating the rectal bleeding, bowel disorders and tumors which are spotted on x-ray sheets. It is also used to check for the rectal and colon cancer in the people above 50 years of age.

In the colonoscopy procedure, a colonoscope is used by the physician to view the inner layer of colon. A colonoscope is a long and flexible instrument of =BD inches of diameter which is introduced in the body through rectum and then it advances to the large intestine.

A little quantity of tissues is removed from the body if it is required for the biopsy and polyps are removed after they are identified. A number of times colonoscopy procedure allows correct analysis and cure and there is no need of any major operation or surgery.

Before the Colonoscopy Procedure

Make the physician aware of the conditions if you are a lung or heart patient, or are allergic from certain kind of medications or if you are pregnant. Also tell him if you are on antibiotics before any surgical procedure or if you are having an artificially attached heart valve.

Take care of the following things if you are going through any kind of medication:

* A diabetic patient should regulate the insulin dose on the test day with the help of his physician. Remember to bring your medicines with you so that you can continue with it after the procedure.

* Get some alternate for blood-thinning prescribed from your physician if you are going through the medication of thinning the blood.

* Make sure that you have not taken aspirin within a week or other anti-inflammatory medicine before the procedure.

* The bulk-forming or iron containing products can make it difficult to view the colon. So, don't take any of such things for a week before the procedure.

* On the days tests are conducted, take the medicines for thyroid or heart diseases and blood pressure with water only.

During the Colonoscopy Procedure

The patient needs to wear the gown provided by the hospital and a tranquilizer and pain-relief pill is given to him. Then the patient is asked to lie on his left with knees drawn upwards. After that a colonoscope is introduced in the body, from rectum to large intestine. This procedure takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour. But there is nothing to be afraid of and the whole process is quite improvised with professional assistance.

After the Colonoscopy Procedure

The patient is kept under observation for about 30 minutes after the colonoscopy procedure. The impression of pain or gas might be felt but not for a long time. The patient is advised to continue with the normal meals and avoid the medication for blood-thinning for at least two weeks after the procedure. It is also advised to stop the use of aspirin to reduce the danger of bleeding in case polyps are removed from the body. There may be rectal bleeding if biopsy is done. But there is no need to worry as it is quite normal. <bio>Are You Ready For a Toxic-Free Colon? You are about to know what your colon must know about colon cleansers.
Thanks to highly reliable tests as well as more frequent testing, colon cancer has become known as one of the least deadly cancers. If caught in its earliest stages, this type of cancer can be completely eradicated from the body. In order for it to be detected, however, patients must undergo a test known as a colonoscopy to check for polyps that might develop into cancer. This test is especially important for those over the age of 50 since there may be no symptoms that cancer is beginning to form.

Some of the warning signs of colon cancer include blood in the stool, diarrhea, a change in bowel habits or pain in the abdomen or rectal area. It is not uncommon for those suffering with this type of cancer not to experience any of these symptoms at all. A doctor's physical examination will also generally not uncover any abnormalities. Really the only way for this type of cancer to be detected is by performing a particular test known as a colonoscopy.

During a colonoscopy, your doctor will use a video camera attached to a thin flexible tube to examine the inside of your colon. While he is conduction his examination, your doctor can remove any small polyps he might find. You will be given both a shot to reduce pain as well as an anesthesia to help you relax during the test. Nearly everyone who undergoes a colonoscopy will tell you the most unpleasant part of the test is the preparation.

This is because the colon must be completely clean before the test can be successfully completed. When he schedules your test, your doctor will also give you instructions on how to cleanse your colon. These instructions will usually involve taking a combination of pill and liquid laxatives as well as using an enema and not eating solid foods for a day or two before your test.

There are a variety of factors that can increase your odds of getting colon cancer. These can include a family history of the disease as well as a personal history of breast cancer or cancer elsewhere in the body. Those with Crohn's disease also seem to be more susceptible to this type of cancer. Your diet may also play a role in whether or not you develop colon cancer. Eating a high-fat, low-fiber diet with lots of red meat can also increase your odds of developing this condition.

If you are diagnosed with colon cancer and your doctor is not able to remove the polyps or cancers during your colonoscopy, there are a variety of other procedures that have proven very successful in treating this type of cancer. Chemotherapy and radiation are both forms of treatment used for this type of cancer. Depending on how far your cancer has spread, your doctor may have to perform surgery to remove the cancerous portion of your colon.

Currently, the prognosis for those diagnosed with colon cancer is excellent. This is especially so if the cancer is caught early. Be aware of your risk factors for cancer; also have a colonoscopy if your doctor suggests it. This test could save your life. <bio>For more information on cancer try visiting http://www.cancercondition.com - a website that specializes in providing cancer related information and resources including information on colon cancer. </bio>

Colorectal cancer will take nearly 50,000 lives the year, and is our country's second largest killer. Screening is available, though there is a significant effort required in terms of preparation and the time needed to perform the test. For most people, the recommendation for your first colonoscopy is at age 50, though it may be sooner if you have risk factors for colon cancer or have noted any potential colon cancer symptoms.

If you've heard horror stories about colonoscopy, the test used today to screen for colon cancers, new technology may just save you from being someone who can tell them. There's a new x-ray alternative that's currently being studied by the American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN) National CT Colonography Trial and is showing itself to be effective at spotting most cancers.

The long anticipated study involved 15 medical centers across the U.S. and compared the accuracy of CT colonography to colonoscopy, the current gold standard of colon cancer diagnosis. The results of this study were published in the Sept. 18, 2008, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

A "virtual colonoscopy" (known technically as CT colonography) is a cheaper, less intrusive 'super' x-ray used for colon screening. The new test was able to pick up nine out of ten people who had large growths or cancers also detected by traditional colonoscopies. Of the false positives detected by the new type of scan, one in four turned out to be correct.

The new screening still involves some preparatory work i.e. cleaning the colon with laxatives or suppositories, just as you do today. You then go to a hospital radiology department to have the test, which takes about 10 minutes (compared to 30-60 minutes for colonoscopy). You lay first on your back and a thin tube is inserted into the rectum, air pumped in and then the table moved though the scanner, taking pictures all the time. You will then go through the scanner again, only this time lying on your stomach. After the two scans, a computer will process the images to create a picture of your lower digestive tract.

Unfortunately, radiologists can more easily misread the virtual colonoscopy. Polyps can be spotted that aren't there, which may lead to unneeded follow up treatment and the terrible anguish of the threat of a serious health problem. However, sometimes the testing picks up other conditions, outside the colon, that wouldn't have come to light that need to be addressed or investigated.

One other concern involves the amount of radiation you are exposed to during the test. The dose is half that of a standard CT scan, but experts worry about what this exposure means over time. Especially since this new test should be done every five years, as opposed to every ten years for traditional colon screening.
The new "virtual colonoscopy" seems to have the most value in getting people in for screening and identifying who may need further follow up. And early detection of colon cancer symptoms does save lives.<bio>Over 14,000 people have joined Kirsten's popular (and sometimes controversial) Daily Health Bulletin, so why not join them and stay up to date with the latest Colon cancer symptoms and general health news daily. You'll also get 5 comprehensive health reports free when you join - giving you all you need to treat common ailments, lose weight, look younger and feel healthier.</bio>

It is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of death among cancers in the Western world.

Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from adenomatous polyps in the colon. These mushroom-like growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy.

Therapy is usually through surgery, which in many cases is followed by chemotherapy.Colorectal cancer can take many years to develop and early detection of colorectal cancer greatly improves the chances of a cure.

Therefore, screening for the disease is recommended in individuals who are at increased risk. There are several different tests available for this purpose.Surgical treatment is by far the most likely to result in a cure of colon cancer if the tumor is localized.

Very early cancer that develops within a polyp can often be cured by removing the polyp at the time of colonoscopy. More advanced cancers typically require surgical removal of the section of colon containing the tumor leaving sufficient margins to reduce likelihood of re-growth.

If possible, the remaining parts of colon are anastomosed together to create a functioning colon. In cases when anastomosis is not possible, a stoma (artificial orifice) is created. While surgery is not usually offered if significant metastasis is present, surgical removal of isolated liver metastases is common. Improved chemotherapy has increased the number of patients who are offered surgical removal of isolated liver metastases.

Laparoscopic assist resection of the colon for tumour can reduce the size of painful incision and minimize the risk of infection.

As with any surgical procedure, colorectal surgery can in rare cases result in complications. These may include infection, abscess, fistula or bowel obstruction. <bio>Colorectal or colon cancer is the third most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer related deaths. http://coloncancersymptoms.info </bio>

IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is characterized by abdominal pain. Other symptoms include cramping, gas, diarrhea, constipation or bloating. Irritable bowel syndrome affects the colon or the large bowel. Irritable bowel syndrome is not a disease but a functional disorder. Irritable bowel syndrome means that the bowel is not functionally properly or correctly. The cause of Irritable bowel syndrome is still a mystery; doctors are not able to give a proper answer for the cause of Irritable bowel syndrome. Those affected have sensitive nerves and muscles in their bowel, i.e., muscles that contract too much when eating. Such contractions cause diarrhea and cramping after a meal or during meal. The reason for cramping or pain is that the nerves may react while the bowel is stretching. Irritable bowel syndrome is very painful but not dangerous for other organs or does not lead to more health problems.

Chronic diarrhea or constipation, mucus, which is in white color in your stool, swollen abdomen or an uneasy feeling in your stomach are symptoms. Women with Irritable bowel syndrome suffer more symptoms during their menstrual periods.

Doctor may find that you have Irritable bowel syndrome due to its symptoms. The most specific of Irritable bowel syndrome is a Rome criterion that is widely used for diagnosis of Irritable bowel syndrome. The best ways to diagnosis is undergoing medical tests after every six months. The medical tests you need to undergo for Irritable Bowel Syndrome are Lower gastrointestinal (GI) series and Colonoscopy. In lower gastrointestinal (GI) series, x-rays are you to diagnose the problem. Where as in colonoscopy the doctor inserts a long thin tube with a camera into your colon. Doctors can view inside the colon with the help of the camera on the screen.

Treatment means a proper diet, taking medicines on time, taking less stress. Diet for Irritable bowel syndrome do not include fatty foods, French fries is the enemy. Ice cream, cheese, chocolate, alcohol, soft drinks, coffee are allies making Irritable bowel syndrome worse. Your diet must be according to the food pyramid. Apples and peaches are favorable to Irritable bowel syndrome. Vegetables like broccoli and cabbage are also good. Intake of cereals and beans like kidney beans and lima beans help to take care of Irritable bowel syndrome. Doctors suggest taking fibre pills or drinking water with high-fiber powder. Eating small meals for Irritable bowel syndrome is helpful. Medicines suggested by doctors should be taken on time for Irritable bowel syndrome. Keeping you busy with less stressful work like your hobbies help Irritable bowel syndrome to be away from you to some extent.

The method of hypnosis is also used for the treatment of Irritable bowel syndrome. You don't need to make special accommodations in your busy schedule to fit in hypnosis sessions, so there's no question of taking medical leaves. You can begin hypnosis to treat IBS right at home. You simply need to download hypnosis for IBS and listen to your MP3. This will help you relax and transcend., you will reach a new level of peace and concentration where stress and the irritable present condition do not bother you. <bio>For more on Irritable Bowel Syndrome and IBS check out the link - http://www.richardmackenziedirect.com/IBS-Hypnosis.htm </bio>

Crohn's Disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Although Crohn's disease can affect any area of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anus it most commonly affects the ileum or the lowest part of the small intestine.

The chronic inflammation can cause pain and can cause the intestines to empty quickly and frequently resulting in diarrhea. This disease can be quite painful and at times debilitating and even more concerning is the fact that Crohn's can also lead to life-threatening complications.

Irritable bowel syndrome, Ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease all have very similar symptoms making the diagnosis of these diseases difficult at best.

Signs and symptoms of Crohn's can range from mild to severe symptoms and may develop gradually or appear suddenly, and without warning. Abdominal pain, often in the lower right area, and diarrhea are the most common symptoms of Crohn's disease.

Other symptoms can include weight loss, rectal bleeding, cramping, diarrhea, bloating, gas, skin lesions, joint pain and fever. Rectal bleeding is a serious issue and can be persistent, leading to anemia. The severity of symptoms varies from person to person.

Crohn's disease is diagnosed usually after your physician has ruled out other diseases. In order to diagnose CD, your physician may order blood tests to look for a low red cell count which may indicate anemia, an increased white blood cell count which indicates an infection, and a high sedimentation rate indicates inflammation.

A colonoscopy is one of the commonly utilized tests for diagnosing Crohn's disease. With this exam, your physician will insert a thin, flexible, lighted tube with an attached camera into your rectum.

This exam allows your physician direct visualization of your entire colon. It also allows your physician to take a biopsy, in which a small tissue sample is taken from the colon and studied further.

Your physician may also order a barium enema. This diagnostic test allows your doctor to evaluate your large intestine with the use of an X-ray.

Another exam is known as a flexible sigmoidoscopy. It is often used in conjunction with a barium enema. In this procedure, your doctor inserts a slender, flexible, lighted tube into the rectum to examine the sigmoid, the last 2 feet of your colon. Both of these tests can be uncomfortable and are not as reliable as a colonoscopy but fortunately are over fairly quickly.

Although there is currently no specific medication designed just for the treatment of Crohn's disease most treatment options focus on treating the symptoms of CD.

If you are suffering with an infection or abscess, medication specific to those conditions are generally ordered. Besides medications, other treatments include nutritional supplements, surgery, or a combination of these options. Treatment goals focus on reducing inflammation, pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding.

Even though there is currently no known cure, this often difficult to manage disease can be improved by working with your physician to design a treatment plan just for you. <bio>For more important information on stomach pain be sure to visit http://a-stomach-pain.com where you will find advice and tips on common stomach pain causes such as Crohn's disease, constipation, and other articles that you can view at http://www.a-stomach-pain.com </bio>

If you are suffering from conditions such as diverticulitis, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and fatigue then chances are you are experiencing problems with your colon. Many common health problems are brought about by an unhealthy colon and the best way to keep it in good shape is through colon cleansing. Read on and find out about the fundamentals of this procedure.

First off, what is the colon and what role does it play in overall health? The colon is more commonly known as the large intestine and it is where our body's waste material is stored. It is also responsible for absorbing water and essential nutrients, as well as for keeping electrolyte levels balanced.

A normal bowel movement is characterized by at least one fecal excretion per day up to as much as three times within 24 hours. For it to be considered healthy, it must not involve overexertion or straining. The feces should be packed rather than broken into tiny bits. Aside from size, color is also an indication of health. Normal feces are usually brown in color.

The colon can hold between 5 and 40 pounds of waste materials. Because the colon is a repository of waste, it is extremely important to have regular bowel movements so that toxins don't accumulate inside the body and harmful germs don't fester inside it. Blockage in the colon results in a domino effect, hampering the functioning of body organs at a progressively serious level. For instance, if you are experiencing colon problems, it is very likely that the liver will start experiencing problems as well.

After the liver, other organs such as the kidneys get affected and it all goes on and on. Many of the problems associated with an unhealthy colon are mostly attributed to poor lifestyle habits. Being careless with what you eat, leading a sedentary life, and having vices such as smoking and drinking alcohol all lead to illnesses brought upon by impaired colon function.

Cleansing is essential to maintaining not just a healthy colon, but a healthy body. There are various ways to do a colon cleanse. Some people prefer to go the natural route, and the easiest way to do this is to closely monitor your diet. Including more fiber in the form of vegetables and fruits in your meals and increasing fluid intake help cleanse the colon by promoting regular and smoother elimination of waste.

Fasting on water and fruit juices is also another method that people use to purge their bodies of impurities. Others use herbs and natural concoctions to help rid the body of undesirable elements. There are also "modern" ways to go about cleansing the colon. Some people use commercial products such as oxygen-based cleansers and medications like laxatives. Others go to colon cleansing clinics and undergo procedures such as colonic hydrotherapy or enemas.

It is highly suggested that people aged 50 and above go through colonoscopy exams every five years. A colonoscopy will help determine if a person is a likely candidate for colon cancer and more importantly, it helps pinpoint potential problem areas so you can solve them before they escalate.<bio>For more information, kindly visit Colon Cleansing. It is particularly common among the elderly and younger children.

How do you get Constipation?

There are a few causes of constipation:

1. Insufficient fibre(fruits, vegetables) to form bulk in the stools.

2. Insufficient fluid in the diet(at least 8 glasses of water).

3. Insufficient time to go to toilet when there is the urge to pass motion.

4. Insufficient exercise to help the intestine to move especially after meals, common in sedentary jobs and older people

5. Stress cause the constriction of the anal sphincter preventing the stools from passing.

6. Depression on the other hand depress the movement of the intestines.

7. Drugs like cough mixture containing codeine, antispasmodic, antacids may also reduce the motility of the intestine.

8. Pregnancy in the later stage cause the womb to press against the intestine.

9. People with low thyroid hormone slows down the movement of the intestines.

10. People with piles or pelvic space occupying swelling which may press against the intestine or rectum.

How to avoid Constipation?

Avoidance of constipation include:

1. Increase in daily fibre intake to at least 15gm (eg. 1 bowl of bran cereal for breakfast), fruits and vegetables).

Fibre increases the bulk of the stool allowing easy passage of stools through the large intestine.

2. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day (2 litres). Water reduces the hardness of stools.

3. Regular exercises at least 2-3 times a day especially after meals. Exercise will enhance intestinal movement.

4. Allow a distraction free period of 15 min a day for bowel movement. The strongest intestinal movement occurs after breakfast.

5. Do not ignore or suppress the urge to pass bowel movement. This may impair the sensation to detect initiation of bowel movement leading to constipation.

How to treat Constipation?

1. Follow the advice above.

2. Consult your family doctor to exclude any abdominal swelling which may be blocking the passage of stools.

A colonoscopy may be needed to check the large intestines for tumours or early cancer. Your piles may be removed during the colonoscopy if found to be obstructing passage of stools.

3. Try Yogurt or fermented milk with lactobacillus as a method to stimulate more production of bulk in stools.

4. Try not to take laxatives unless it is deemed necessary by your doctor. Most doctors preferred not to use medicine in combating constipation.

5. Learn to relax the anal sphincter by doing some pelvic exercises <bio>Kenneth Kee email: kwk481@gmail.com website: http://www.kennethkee.com http://kennethkee.blogspot.com http://dotkee.110mb.com http://mirage800.110mb.com http://success.myweb.io http://mirage.myweb.io Profile: A newbie to world of internet marketing. Endoscopy allows the doctor to look into the body through a thin, lighted tube called an endoscope. The exam is named for the organ involved (for example, colonoscopy to look inside the colon). During the exam, the doctor may collect tissue or cells for closer examination

3. Laboratory tests such as blood and urine tests offer the physician significant data. If cancer is submit, the laboratory job can indicate the effects of the disease on the system. In some cases, particular tests are used to evaluate the sum of sure substances in the blood, urine, and new system fluids, or tumor tissue. The levels of these substances may get irregular when sure kinds of cancer are existing.

4. Biopsy is the simply certain manner to recognize whether the trouble is cancer. In a biopsy, the physician removes a sampling of tissue from the irregular region or may withdraw the entire tumor. A pathologist examines the tissue under a microscope. If cancer is submit, the pathologist can normally say what sort of cancer it is and may be capable to evaluate whether the cells are possible to rise slowly or rapidly.

5. When cancer is found, the patient's doctor needs to know the stage, or extent, of the disease to plan the best treatment. The doctor may order various tests and exams to find out whether the cancer has spread and, if so, what parts of the body are affected. In some cases, lymph nodes near the tumor are removed and checked for cancer cells.
If you have been experiencing rectal bleeding and discomfort and think that you may have hemorrhoids, you may want to have your symptoms checked out by a doctor. Knowing what to expect of your visit can help you to feel more comfortable during your examination. Also, by understanding what will occur, you will be better prepared to get the help that you need for your hemorrhoids.

The first thing to consider is that is important to get a proper diagnoses. Even if you are certain that you have hemorrhoids, even if it is not the first time that you have had them, you should still see your physician and be examined. There are several other digestive disorders that could be contributing to the problem -- some of them serious. Rectal bleeding can even be due to cancer, so it is important that you get it checked out.

The first thing your doctor will do is examine the anus and the rectal area. He or she will look for swollen blood vessels. These are a major symptom of hemorrhoids. Your physician will check for lumps in the skin close to the anus. He or she will then will then use a lubricated glove to examine you internally. Your physician will feel for lumps or abnormalities along the wall of the rectum. These lumps and abnormalities can be signs of hemorrhoids.

One of the tools that doctors will often use when examining for hemorrhoids is a proctoscope. This is a hollow tube with a light on it. It is inserted into the rectum and allows the doctor to more easily see any problems in that area. This instrument is most often used if internal hemorrhoids are suspected. Your doctor will be able to examine the lining of the rectum, determine if there is anything unusual or abnormal on the lining of the rectum, and determine if these abnormalities are hemorrhoids.

If your doctor is unable to determine the cause of the hemorrhoids, he ore she has the option of performing a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. In this procedure, your doctor inserts a hollow tube (similar to the proctoscope) into your rectum and colon. In this manner he or she can examine not only the frontal area of the rectum, but into the intestinal area as well. This same tool is what doctors use to diagnose bleeding and discomfort not related to hemorrhoids.

If you have been experiencing symptoms of hemorrhoids, it is important to be examined by a physician to determine that there is not a larger problem. By knowing the cause of your problem, you can treat the bleeding and discomfort and get on with your life. Hemorrhoids don't have to interfere with your life if you seek treatment now. <bio>William Brown writes for several Internet magazines, including http://online-healthy.com and http://healthy-zone.com </bio>

Colon cancer is the second most common cancer in the USA with equal distribution between men and women. Colon tumors usually affect people over the age of 40, with the majority of people who are diagnosed with the condition being over 60 years of age. Colon cancer may affect any racial or ethnic group; however, some studies suggest that Americans of northern European heritage have a higher-than-average risk of colon tumours.

INCIDENCE OF COLON CANCER

Colon cancer is more common in industrialized nations and in those societies where red meat is a major part of the diet, although evidence tends to suggest that merely changing your diet to white meat and seafood as in for instance Japan, tends to just swap stomach cancer for colon cancer. In almost all cases colon cancer is a treatable disease if caught early.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Colon cancer usually begins with the appearance of benign growths such as polyps. Often there are no early symptoms. If signs and symptoms of colon cancer do appear, they may include: a change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool for more than a couple of weeks, rectal bleeding or blood in your stool, persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain, abdominal pain with a bowel movement, a feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely, weakness or fatigue and unexplained weight loss.

CAUSES OF COLON CANCER

Colon cancer's exact cause is unknown, but it appears to be influenced by both inherited and environmental factors. Studies show a concentration in areas of higher economic development suggesting a relationship to diet, particularly excess animal fat and low fiber. Other factors that increase the risk of developing colon tumors are: age over 40, the presence of other diseases of the digestive tract, family history and ulcerative colitis.

Development of colon cancer at an early age, or at multiple sites, or recurrent colon cancer, suggests a genetically transmitted form of the disease as opposed to the sporadic form. There also is a slight increased risk for colon carcinoma in the individual who smokes.

The most common colon cancer cell type is adenocarcinoma which accounts for 95% of cases.

DIAGNOSIS

The development of polyps of the colon usually precedes the development of colon cancer by five or more years. The American Gastroenterologial Association revised its screening guidelines in 2003 to recommend that people with two or more first-degree relatives with colorectal cancer or a first-degree relative with colon or rectal cancer before age 60 should have a screening colonoscopy beginning at age 40 or beginning 10 years prior to the age of the earlier colon cancer diagnosis in their family (whichever is earliest). Those with a first-degree relative diagnosed with colon cancer after age 60 or two second-degree relative with colon or rectal cancer should begin screening at age 40 with one of the methods listed above, such as annual sigmoidoscopy. The most common colon cancer screening tests are colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and fecal occult blood test.

CT scans and Barium enemas are also routinely used for diagnosis of colon and rectal cancers.

TREATMENT OF COLON CANCER

Almost all colon tumors are treated with surgery first, regardless of stage. The malignant tumor, adjacent tissues and any lymph nodes that may contain cancer cells are removed.

In colon cancer, chemotherapy after surgery is usually only given if the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes (Stage III). Radiation therapy may also be used to induce tumor regression. As with other cancer treatments, the incidence of side effects varies with patient health and the exact nature of the treatment.

PREVENTION

There is not an absolute method for preventing colon cancer. Still, there are steps an individual can take to dramatically lessen the risk or to identify the precursors of colon cancer so that it does not manifest itself. People who turn age 50, and all of those with a history of colon cancer in their families, should speak with their physicians about the most recent screening recommendations from physician and cancer organizations. They should watch for symptoms and attend all recommended screenings to increase the likelihood of catching colon cancer early. Exercise is believed to reduce the risk of colon cancer. Apparently, no association exists between frequency of bowel movement or laxative use and risk of colon cancer.

PROGNOSIS

Prognosis depends on the stage of the disease and the overall health of the patient. If diagnosed early, before the tumor has spread from the bowel, these treatments are very effective, with about 90% of patients alive five years after diagnosis. If the colon cancer does not come back (recur) within 5 years, it is considered cured. Prognosis is poor in patients with liver and lung metastases.<bio>Dick Aronson has been involved in the healthcare industry for 35 years.
A Simple guide to Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids or piles are distended veins inside the anus which are swollen and inflamed. Hemorrhoids are either inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external).

What is the cause of hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids usually result from straining to pass the stool out of anus. Other contributing factors include pregnancy, aging, chronic constipation or diarrhea.

What are the symptoms of hemorrhoids?

The most common symptom of internal hemorrhoids is bleeding from the anus.Bright red blood may be seen covering the stool, on toilet paper, or dripping from the anus into the toilet bowl.

There may be pain too especially if the stool is hard. This could be due to the hard stools pressing on the swollen piles or due to a tear in the inner lining of the anus.

A painful swelling or a hard lump around the anus may occur when a blood clot forms. This condition is known as a thrombosed hemorrhoid.

In addition, excessive straining, rubbing, or cleaning around the anus may cause irritation with bleeding and/or itching.

How common are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half of the population have hemorrhoids by age 50.

Hemorrhoids are also common among pregnant women. The pressure of the fetus in the abdomen, as well as hormonal changes, cause the hemorrhoidal vessels to enlarge. For most women, however, hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy are temporary.

When are hemorrhoids diagnosed?

A thorough examination and proper diagnosis by the doctor is important any time bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stool occurs. Bleeding may also be a symptom of other digestive diseases, including colorectal cancer.

The doctor will examine the anus and rectum to look for swollen blood vessels that indicate hemorrhoids and will also perform a digital rectal exam with a gloved, lubricated finger to feel for abnormalities.

Closer evaluation of the rectum for hemorrhoids requires an exam with a proctoscope, useful for more completely examining the entire rectum.

To rule out other causes of gastrointestinal bleeding, the doctor may examine the rectum and the entire colon with colonoscopy.

Colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that also involve the use of lighted, flexible tube inserted through the rectum.

What is the treatment?

a. Medical treatment of hemorrhoids is aimed initially at relieving symptoms. Measures to reduce symptoms include:

1. tub baths several times a day in plain, warm water for about 10 minutes 2. application of a hemorroidal cream or suppository to the affected area. 3. medicines such as daflon to shrink the swollen blood vessel.

b. surgical treatment:A number of methods may be used to remove or reduce the size of internal hemorrhoids.

These techniques include

1. Rubber band ligation. A rubber band is placed around the base of the hemorrhoid inside the rectum. The band cuts off circulation, and the hemorrhoid withers away within a few days.

2. Sclerotherapy. A chemical solution is injected around the blood vessel to shrink the hemorrhoid.

3. Laser coagulation. A special device is used to burn hemorrhoidal tissue.

4. Hemorrhoidectomy. Occasionally, extensive or severe internal or external hemorrhoids may require removal by surgery known as hemorrhoidectomy.

5. A new method is the Longo technique. It involve using a circular stapling device which removes a ring of tissue in the lower anus pulling the enlarged piles up within the anus. The staples also interrupt the blood supply to the piles.

How do you prevent hemorrhoids?

The best way to prevent hemorrhoids is to keep stools soft so they pass easily, thus decreasing pressure and straining, and to empty bowels as soon as possible after the urge occurs.

Drink lots of water at least eight glasses a day.

Eating the right amount of fiber result in softer, bulkier stools. A softer stool makes emptying the bowels easier and lessens the pressure on hemorrhoids caused by straining. Good sources of fiber are fruits, vegetables, bran bread, and whole grains.

Avoid food which cause local irritation of anus (spicy food, alcohol) or bowel excitation (coffee, tea)

Exercise, including walking, swimming, help reduce constipation and straining by producing stools that are softer and easier to pass.

Avoid certain sports such as cycling and horse -riding because of the pressure exerted on the anal region.

Avoid sitting in hot places for too long.

Use the toilet at a fixed time eg. after drinking a big glass of water, when you wake up. <bio>Kenneth Kee email: kwk481@gmail.com website: http://www.kennethkee.com http://kennethkee.blogspot.com http://dotkee.110mb.com http://mirage800.110mb.com http://success.myweb.io http://mirage.myweb.io Profile: A newbie to world of internet marketing.
Finding an effective constipation remedy that will help relieve the pain can seem quite daunting for those who regularly suffer from constipation. Constipation is a condition where a person has difficulty moving their bowels and there are a number of ways in which it can be diagnosed such as a physical examination, colorectal transit study, anorectal function tests, barium enema x-ray, and sigmoidoscopy or through a colonoscopy.

However there are number of constipation remedies around which should hopefully help to improve the situation as well as remove the problem.

A good one to use is to train your bowel. If you can attempt to have a bowel movement at the same time each day (preferably first thing in the morning) as this is when your colon activity is at its highest and you can practice this quite easily.

Ensure that you improve your eating habits but including plenty of high fiber foods (cereals), and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. It is important that if you suffer from constipation you limit the amount of ice cream, cheese, meat and processed foods that you consume.

Drink plenty of water (about 1.5-2 litres each day) and avoid those drinks which can cause dehydration such as coffee and alcohol.

Also take up some form of regular exercise and not only will it help to alleviate the problems associated with constipation it will provide you with other health benefits as well.

However, if you find that are still not having regular bowel movements even if you have made the changes above then you wish to consider using a bulk forming laxative such Psyllium or Methylcellulose and they can be used for a long time without any side effects.

There are also other medications that can be used to remedy constipation such as Hyprosmotics, Lactulose, Polyethylene Glycol, Glycerin and Sorbital as well as salines like Magnesium Hydroxide, Magnesium Citrate and Sodium Phosphate.

However if you have found that neither of the above methods work for you then you may try such medications as Anthraquinones such as Cascara Sagrada, Emollients such as Docusates, Senna and Mineral Oil.

There are also stimulants such as Phenolphthalein, Castor Oil or Bisacodyl which may also help to remedy the problems associated with constipation but such medications as these need to be used under strict supervision of a doctor or healthcare worker and only as a short term measure as most of these have some side effects.

People who are using laxatives should discontinue use slowly and after some time the colon will be restored to its normal working balance.

Finally, you should only use enemas or suppositories as an emergency treatment and if all else fails then surgery may be your only alternative. <bio>Lee Dobbins writes for http://www.colon-articles.com where you can learn more about having a healthy colon and read about more constipation remedies. </bio>

In deciding not to procrastinate, you may want to accompany this determination with clear cut and well defined goals.

In other words, have a goal that is quantified, and not just qualified.

For example, saying "I will lose weight" is NOT as powerful as "I will lose 35 pounds in 1-1/2 years." These are concrete data you can work with. "I will lose weight" sounds noble enough, but let's count the ways, shall we?

Tip # 1 Everything starts and ends with the self

If someone said to you that you were a procrastinator, your immediate reaction would be to defend yourself. "It's his fault", "My mother was like that too", "I was forced to do something I didn't want to do".

Some people like to blame their misfortunes on others. But the truth is, you are equally at fault. You procrastinate because you yourself choose to procrastinate. The sooner you accept that, the better you'll be able to overcome procrastination.

Tip # 2 I want NOT to procrastinate anymore

In line with tip # 1 above, once you accept that procrastination is your weakness, the next step is to eliminate this weakness. Your desire not to procrastinate anymore should be sincere. You need to demonstrate that determination through small daily gestures.

Tip # 3 Mea Culpa-Take Responsibility

You've accepted the fact that (a) you're a procrastinator, and (b) you have a sincere desire to change. Now tell yourself that if you fail to achieve a particular goal or a given task, it's because you procrastinated. Mea culpa. Admitting guilt is a giant step.

Note, however, that there is a huge difference between admitting guilt and being too hard on yourself. Admitting guilt is taking ownership of your actions. Being too hard on yourself is unjustified self-blame. Continue from where you left off.

Tip # 4 Ask: In what ways do I procrastinate?

Ask yourself, "In what ways do I procrastinate?" Sit down with pen and paper. Writing them will help you focus and identify them more clearly. Here are some ways where people procrastinate:

1) paying bills which includes your electricity bills, handphone bills, mortgage bills etc

2) not discussing the complaints you've received about a member of your team for fear of hurting his/her feelings

3) repeatedly postponing a dental appointment because you've got better things to do

4) not returning the call of your son's teacher because you know what the problem is and you're fed up

5) not discussing your resentment about your husband spending too much time at work or with his buddies

6) not getting that hair cut, that dress dry-cleaned, that donation mailed

7) not visiting a sick relative in the hospital

8) not telling your significant other you no longer love her/him

9) not calling your doctor about that persistent numbness in your right arm or not fixing a colonoscopy exam date

10) not having the car's squeaking brakes checked

11) not going to confession because you never know what the priest's schedule is

12) not sending that overdue thank you note or making that overdue call to your mother-in-law. <bio>Discover how to use emotional intelligence as a way to lead a better life as well as using hypnotism positive change when you visit self improvement resource portal at http://www.tips.com.my/Category/Self-Improvement-Tips/77 </bio>

Unfortunately, many people end up in car accidents each year. Some of these accidents result in people being able to walk away without a scratch, while others kill or severely injure the people who were involved in them. In order to diagnose the injuries, a medical test will need to be performed.

Specifically, this medical test is called a CT scan. In the CT scan procedure, a person who has suffered a back injury in a car accident will thus be properly diagnosed. Aside from the slight indentation on one's back, it is very hard to determine, just on the surface of the skin, what the spinal injury actually was.

Basically, a CT scan is an intensified version of the usual x-ray. When a patient has an x-ray done of a certain area of their body, the radiation is at just a minimal amount. Thus, a basic x-ray is best only to ascertain broken bones.

In the case of a spinal cord injury, a more detailed x-ray is needed, and that is where the CT scan can help. Since there is more radiation involved in this procedure, the overall results are far more detailed as well. Blood vessels and even tissue can be seen.

It is important to note that this kind of scan is not just to diagnose spinal cord injuries -- quite the contrary. Actually, it is used to diagnose a myriad of other health issues. Take, for example, the brain. When a person is experiencing extreme migraines on a regular basis, this scan might be done to determine if the headaches are caused by something more serious, such as a clot or a brain tumor.

Another way that this scan is used in diagnosis is in examining the vital organs. Again, this could be to find out if there is a tumor present. Or, it could, in the case of the arteries, be used to see if there is a plaque buildup. If such buildup was determined in the scan, that would indicate that the patient is at risk for a heart attack.

How does a patient prepare for such a procedure? First of all, attention should be paid to how the patient is dressed. Comfortable clothing is very important, since the patient will be lying in one place for around an hour. In order for the scan to be successful, the patient needs to avoid wearing anything that has a metal button, zipper, or anything metal in general on it.

Sometimes, clothing is not actually a big deal at all. If the patient arrives in something that is not suitable for the scan, the doctor might request for the patient to just wear a medical robe. The patient will be asked to lie down on a narrow bed -- much like the bed that is used during regular examinations.

The patient and the bed will, in a conveyor belt-like motion, be pushed back into a large tube-like place for the actual scan. Some patients have a problem with this part if they have claustrophobia. The patient is sometimes invited to go to sleep with the scan is being performed, or the patient and listen to music of their choice.<bio>More information on CT scan treatment, virtual colonoscopy treatments and a Roslyn scan doctor of New York in your area is just a click away.</bio>

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS as is it commonly called is a very common disorder that affects at least 15% of the general population. This disease is sometimes called spastic colitis, nervous stomach, spastic colon or mucous colitis. Irritable bowel syndrome should not be mistaken for other diseases of the bowel such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional disorder which means that there is an abnormality in the functioning of the bowels but no structural abnormalities are present.

What causes IBS?

IBS symptoms seem to occur as a result of an abnormality of communication between the muscles of the bowel and the nervous system. This may result in the bowel becoming more sensitive or "irritated". The muscles which are located in the bowel wall may contract either too weakly or too forcefully, too rapidly or too slowly at certain times. There is no physical obstruction in the bowel, yet a patient may experience cramps or a functional blockage.

What role does stress play in IBS?

Stress does not cause IBS. It is not a psychiatric or a psychological disorder. However, one contributor to IBS is emotional stress. When a person becomes nervous or anxious, he or she may experience diarrhea or nausea. It may be impossible to control stress's effect on our intestines, but if we are able to reduce the sources of stress in our daily lives, then this may help to reduce or alleviate the symptoms of IBS.

Is this IBS or something else?

You must have a comprehensive physical examination and medical history by a physician or a specialized colon and rectal surgeon in order to eliminate more serious disorders. You may have to have certain tests such as stool tests, blood tests, perhaps a colonoscopy and x-ray studies done. Fever, rectal bleeding, anemia, and unexplained weight loss are not symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and need to be assessed by your physician.

How is IBS treated?

If the patient understands that IBS is not a life-threatening or a serious condition, this may help to relieve stress and anxiety which are often contributors to IBS. Different techniques can be incorporated to reduce stress such as biofeedback, behavioral therapy, relaxation or even pain management techniques may all help to relieve IBS symptoms is certain individuals. The patient may wish to make use of a journal or diary to help identify certain factors or foods that may cause symptoms of IBS.

When can I expect relief of symptoms?

Relieving symptoms of IBS is often a very slow process. It may take as long as six months and sometimes longer to see any noticeable improvement of symptoms. It is extremely important for one to have patience when dealing with IBS.

Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can be greatly reduced or even eliminated with the proper diet and even with the use of appropriate medications. Irritable bowel syndrome does not lead to bleeding, cancer or inflammatory bowel diseases.

I hope this article answers your question of what exactly is irritable bowel syndrome? <bio>Article written by Jessica Bradbury, she has a site dedicated to bottom line information on IBS at http://www.ibs-information.com </bio>

Abdominal pain with diarrhea and weight loss for no apparent reason can be an early indication of Crohn's disease.

The symptoms of Crohn's disease can vary in intensity from mild to severe to even life altering. Your health can suffer greatly if you are experiencing intestinal disorder. Some Crohn's sufferers find themselves giving up some of their basic daily activities just in case of an episode of Crohn's disease eruption.

Crohn's disease is an inflammation or ulceration of the digestive tract and is most often seen in the lowest portion of the small intestine known as the ileum. Crohn's disease can also be seen in the large intestine or colon.

Symptoms of Crohn's disease include abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss, poor appetite, fever, night sweats, rectal pain and rectal bleeding. These Crohn's disease symptoms can vary in severity and can show themselves all together or a few at a time. Regardless any of these symptoms can make you feel horribly and can invade your plans for the day.

There are several different types of Crohn's disease which include Crohn's colitis, Crohn's enteritis, Crohn's terminal iletis, Crohn's entero-colitis and ileo-colitis.

The two most common types of Crohn's disease are Crohn's terminal ileitis and Crohn's ileo-colitis.

Crohn's terminal ileitis is an inflammation that invades, as its names suggests, only the very end of the small intestines. Most commonly with terminal ileitis, symptoms experienced are often seen as abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Crohn's ileo-colitis is one of the other most common types of Crohn's disease seen today. With ileo-colitis, the colon and small intestine become horribly inflamed and show up as abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea.

If you see these symptoms then it is important to see your healthcare provider to determine if you have a definitive diagnosis of Crohn's disease. To determine if you have Crohn's disease, your healthcare provider will take a complete medical history and perform a physical exam. Your physician may also order imaging test such as a barium x-ray to look at the intestine and the colon. It is also rather common for physicians to order a colonoscopy to determine a definitive diagnosis of Crohn's disease. This allows your physician to look directly into the colon to see exactly what is going on.

Unfortunately at this time, Crohn's disease cannot be cured. However, there are many medications on today's market that can help manage the disease. Medications can reduce the inflammation and infection often seen in conjunction with the worsening symptoms of Crohn's disease.

Remember, if you are suffering from health issues involving your intestinal function, it is important to seek medical care so that you can receive the proper treatment. Crohn's disease is a serious health issue and one that deserves your attention. <bio>For more important information on health topics sure to visit http://www.the-health-hub.com where you will find information and resources on personal health such as Crohn's Disease, conditions and diseases, diet and nutrition, fitness and many other articles that you can view at http://the-health-hub.com </bio>
