When babies cry for more than three hours per day, they are said to have colic. This period of excessive crying differs from baby to baby, but usually occurs when a baby is around three weeks of age and wears off when a baby is in between the age of four to six weeks. During this period of extreme disturbance, the parents usually get little or no sleep.

Most doctors believe that colic occurs to a child in order to psychologically awaken, and prepare the parents of the newborn child, for a new life. This sense of awareness created through colic, is said to make the parents understand that a new member is now in the family. It is just as though the child is announcing their presence. If not for colic, doctors say that the normal way of life will resume and the parents will need more time to adjust to their new beginning as parents.

Usually what most parents would want is for the child to meet their demands. If the parents want to go out they would expect the child to stay quiet for the sitter, when they want to sleep they would imagine that the child would also fall asleep with them. This is not the case as the colic introduces a lot of change into their current active life. This helps the parents adjust their lifestyle to accommodate the newborn child instead of the newborn complying to parents lifestyle for each other. Reason for this belief has risen due to the fact that when parents have adopted a new lifestyle accommodating the newest member of the family, the colic stops.

Also what parents should understand is that colic is not a disease or an illness of some sort. It is very normal for a child to go through this period. The crying in some children will be more than others but this soon all this will go away. It is just another sign that the child is growing physically and mentally healthy. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles </bio>

All parents pass through a tedious period when their baby experiences baby colic. Baby or infant colic is a condition where you may find a perfectly healthy baby crying for no reason at all. Sometimes screaming also accompanies this crying and this situation is common amongst babies who are a few months old. At the age of eight months, the child may stop experiencing baby colic.

Colic is more common in the bottle fed baby, however, this does not imply that it is not seen in breast fed babies. There are cases of breast fed babies also experiencing baby colic and bouts generally occur during a specific part of the day, mostly early evening.

The cause has not been proven yet. It is found that the amount of colic in babies tend to differ from one to the other. Babies are generally considered to be suffering from baby colic even if, after all its causes have been ruled out, the baby keeps crying for hours daily, more than 3 days a week, throughout the month.

Colic was first assumed to be abdominal pain that developed with trapped gas in the digestive tract. However, it is no longer considered to be the only cause. Some doctors conclude that the baby's delicate nature, its developing nervous system, and the new and harsh environment it lives in all generally lead to baby colic. A condition called mild gastro esophageal reflux has also been linked to it. Sometimes, babies suffering from lactose intolerance may also suffer and circadian rhythms' effects, smoking of the mother and smoke in the air, along with existence of too much stress in the pregnant mother during the third trimester of pregnancy have all been found to be associated with baby colic.

There has never been any fixed medical treatment. The treatment of baby colic differs between medical practitioners and physicians of different countries. In fact, there are some physicians who advise the baby to be left alone, and let the baby colic run its course, as there is no actual cure for baby colic. Some doctors today advise simethicone to treat baby colic; this is effective in some cases, and not in others.

Allergies in the baby and mother have now been proven to be the major cause, so it is often advised to control the diet of the breastfeeding mother. This move has in fact produced amazing results. However, it does not necessarily cure it. Soothing measures like pacifiers and rocking have found to be rather effective in calming the baby during bad bouts. Parents generally try all types of methods to cure baby colic. If you have tried several ways, but still not able to solve the issue fully, don't feel disappointed. Baby colic will last only a few months. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles </bio>

It's no secret, babies are prone to crying. Crying is their way to communicate to their parents that they want something like food, sleep or a new diaper. But, it can also be a sign of pain, or discomfort like that associated with colic. How can we tell normal baby crying from colic baby crying? Check below to discover three warning signs of colic.

Crying predictably

Also known as the "rule of threes." If a baby cries for three or more hours a day, three or more days a week, for three consecutive weeks, but is otherwise healthy and thriving, she can be diagnosed with colic. The crying jags usually start early evening and may last until well after bedtime. Your baby may be extremely gassy and pass some gas towards the end of the colic episode.

Out of control crying

Baby's cry will be intense and inconsolable. A colicky baby seems to be in pain, and the crying is indicative of this. The face will more than likely be extremely red. And any attempt to comfort will seem almost impossible. Because of the extreme crying, your baby will swallow too much air which results in gas.

Posture change

You will notice your baby tends to curl up her legs, clench her fist and have tense, rigid stomach muscles.

What are the Causes of Colic?

Despite thorough research, no single cause for colic has been narrowed down. The fussiness a colicky baby demonstrates has many different causes. In order to help your baby, you need to become familiar with several different colic remedies to help soothe your baby's pain.

Some possible theories of the cause of colic are:

• Problems digesting proteins like lactose and others.
• Acid Reflux (stomach acid flows backwards into the esophagus)
• Intestinal cramps from an immature digestive system
• Too much air being swallowed which leads to gas being caught in the digestive tract
• Too much mental stimulation on an immature nervous system

Barry M. Lester, Ph.D., director of the colic clinic at Brown University, states that of the approximately four million babies born, 800,000 suffer from colic. His book Why is My Baby Crying is a valuable resource for parents of babies with colic.

In his book, Lester indicates you can differentiate between a "normal" baby cry and a "pain" cry.

"The pain cry is usually high-pitched, loud, and of sudden onset and includes long periods of breath-holding," Lester writes.

Parents of colicky babies can assure you, the cry you witness is a "pain" cry. If you think your baby's cry sounds like she is in pain, please call your doctor right away. There may be other conditions present other than colic.

Parents who watch their baby suffer from signs of colic suffer as well. They might feel utterly helpless. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Colic will more than likely disappear by the third month of life (although some cases have been known to last up to 9 months).

If you doctor confirms that your baby is suffering from colic, don't despair. Although colic will probably disrupt your schedule and make you feel like an incompetent parent, you're not. Colic is not your fault, and there are lots of tools and remedies available to help soothe your baby and make her happy and comfortable again.<bio>Cherie Stirewalt is a colic baby survivor and outlines the colic remedies she mastered to soothe her baby's crying. Download her white noise mp3 and get started on stopping your baby's colic today!</bio>

There are no proven cures or ways to treat colic, but there are certain procedures you can take that will help you to reduce it. First of all, before we get into those measures that you should take to reduce colic, you must understand and know what works with your child because after all we are all unique, even babies.

One of the biggest causes for colic is weaning. When a baby is weaned this shouldn't happen all in one go. Usually it's much easier on a child if weaning is done gradually, and slowly. It's much like smoking, as you can't just go cold turkey and quit overnight, it takes time. A good way is to start feeding the child with bottle milk while at the same time breast feeding, but as you go you should increase the bottle milk and decrease the breast milk.

It has also been reported that some women find what they eat affects their child when being breast fed and avoiding those foods has helped reduce the colic. A good way to know which foods might be causing the problems for you and your child is by eliminating the food you suspect of creating colic. Later introduce it back into your diet, and see the results of your little experiment. If the baby begins crying again, then you know for sure what to avoid.

Another good reason for colic to occur is when a baby swallows air whilst being bottle fed. To reduce this simply change the positioning of the baby bottle, or get a bottle which is specifically designed to reduce the amount of air a baby swallows while drinking milk. These bottles are normally curved and or have a small vent in the middle.

If the above reasons do not solve your child's colic, then there is no need to panic because colic is normal amongst infants. Try some of the following techniques. Try taking the child out for a walk as this can be a pleasant experience for you and for the child to discover new things. Give them a toy that rattles or anything that makes a noise as these can peak a child's curiosity and keep them busy for hours. You may also try a nice warm bath, again these can be very soothing and calming. Try to keep the baby in some sort of motion. In general anything new can solve your baby's colic problem, babies are curious creatures, who have yet a lot to learn and experience so try new stuff as may just amaze the both of you.

In the end, focus on what works for you and do not be afraid to try different methods. Experiment with different ways to reduce colic and as a general rule of thumb go with what is working for your child, and, for you as a parent. There is no need to worry about colic, it's harmless, and, sooner or later will wear off as the child grows. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of Your Favourite Shop - http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit Hapa Health - http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles. </bio>

If your baby is crying for prolonged periods of time it maybe due to the fact that your baby is suffering from colic. Colic tends to start without warning and stops as abruptly as it starts.

Crying as a result of colic generally occurs during the day more often around the evening feed and if colic going to occur, it usually becomes apparent within 3 weeks of birth, normally lasting up to 3 months.

Colic is thought to be a type of spasmodic stomach ache resulting in cramp like pains which causes the baby to scream and draw their legs up in pain. The baby will be extremely miserable and show signs of distress with periods of calm being followed with bouts of screaming which can continue for several hours at one time.

Colic can affect both bottle feed and breast feed babies with possible causes being:

• The quantity of food offered, either too little or too much in one go.

• A feed which is too rich or too weak (if bottle feeding always follow the manufacturers instructions).

• A bottle feed that isn't offered at the right temperature being either too hot or too cold.

• With breast feeding the wrong type of food being eaten by the mother. If colic arises in a breast feed baby try cutting out anything that you have eaten within the last 24 hours which you think might have affected your baby. Speak to your midwife or healthcare visitor who will advise you as too what types of food may affect your baby.

• Constipation or diarrhoea.

• Indigestion

It is thought that there could be a link between tension and colic with colic occurring more frequently at the end of the day. The evening tend to be a more stressful part of the day when mothers are tired with the baby to feed and make ready for bed, possibly other children to attend to and general chores to get cleared.

Babies are sensitive to moods and may cry when they feel the atmosphere is tense which just compounds the situation with the babies crying causing more tension and so it goes on until mother and child are exhausted.

One recommendation is to take as much pressure off the end of the day as possible by preparing bottle feeds and clearing as much work as possible earlier in the day. A more relaxed evening atmosphere could help to calm and soothe your baby and reduce the incidences of colic or lesson the impact.

When colic occurs you can try holding your baby close to your body providing warmth and comfort to your baby's stomach, gently rubbing their back. With possibly several hours to go it is always advisable to try and share the comforting of your baby, with your partner, which will help reduce the tension and provide you both will a well earned break.

As yet, there are no 100% reliable treatments for colic although there are some over the counter treatments available. If you and your baby are struggling with colic seek medical advice before trying any colic preparations.

If your baby's colic is beginning to get you both down just hold onto the fact that it generally only lasts for a couple of months! <bio>Terry Ross is the author for and creator of: http://www.1st-4-baby.com/Baby_Care.html, a site targeted at pregnancy, babies and baby care. </bio>

For most parents, the search for the best possible care in ensuring that their baby's needs as far as attention and material needs are satisfied will always be at the top of their agenda. One typical sign that causes alarm for most parents is the usual crying of babies, signaling a certain shortcoming that needs to be attended to since these infants are unable to express in the usual means of what they need and what is bothering them.

Excessive crying is only natural for babies. These are usually referred to as colic issues. Colic is usually referred to as the extreme end of normal crying behaviors of babies usually in the span of 3 weeks and 3 months of age. Some people would often mistake or misdiagnose colic for excessive crying of babies, but the main difference can be identified for babies who are diagnosed to be healthy yet continuously cry despite consoling efforts of adults. Colic is usually at its worst for a span of about 6 to 8 weeks but would slowly decrease on its own in the succeeding weeks. Physician would term this as colic exaggerated infant crying behavior, something that can be expected for a newly born infant that is trying to find its way into the new world and environment that he finds himself in.

The degree of intensity to which most off springs would cry excessively depends as well on inherited nervous systems from the genes of their parents. Sometimes these would be traced as hereditary which is only normal. There should not be any cause for alarm, and other abnormal behaviors related to health such as vomiting and diarrhea are in no way closely related to colic issues. In such cases where health related problems are becoming recurrent, it would be best to relay this issue towards the family physician for consultation. But to identify this as related to colic child behaviors may be incorrect. This is something that misleads most parents into believing that there is an abnormality as far as the upbringing of a child. Treating such issues is only normal, since being newly born infants; parents are naturally concerned about the sensitivity of their child to the new environment they may find themselves in. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of Your Favourite Shop - http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit Hapa Health - http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles. </bio>

It is common knowledge that smoking is dangerous for your health. Smoking has also been proven to be fatal to your baby - this fact can never be overly emphasized.

Smoking is an obvious risk factor for baby colic. Studies imply that pregnant women who smoke 10-15 cigarettes a day are more likely to have give birth to infants with ailments, including baby colic. The possibility of such health risk is increased by as much as 50% as compared to women who do not smoke during pregnancy.

Baby colic is a condition that is evident in children 3-months old and below. Even as early as one week after childbirth, babies can show signs of baby colic. Symptoms would include irritability and long hours of crying you could notice a pattern in infants suffering from it. If they cry for hours for more than three days in a span of one week, and if such pattern goes on for more than three weeks, then your baby is suffering from baby colic. Although there is no known cause for such condition, medical experts attest that smoking poses a great risk for infant colic.

An adult who does not smoke would have a coughing fit once exposed in a room where people smokes excessively so you could imagine a three-month old child in the exact situation. The effects would be more adverse and more serious. Studies suggest that maternal smoking have an adverse effect in your child's gastrointestinal tract. Smoking can aggravate your baby's respiratory passageways and may disrupt airflow. If this happens, it is most likely that an infant would suffer from colic.

To prove the argument that smoking can trigger colic, a study was conducted in Denmark where 1800 women where invited to be observed. They were asked about their smoking habits and lifestyle. Researchers conduct a check-up during the 16th week, 30th week and 8 months after they gave birth. Thirty percent of these women are smokers. The study concluded that 11% of the children are diagnosed with colic.

The most sensible thing to do if you want to prevent your child from suffering such an ailment is to simply quit smoking. If you can't totally eliminate your craving to puff a cigarette, then do so in some place away from your child. This simple sacrifice is not just for the sake of child's health, it can do you good as well. Smoking is never good for anyone. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of Your Favourite Shop - http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit Hapa Health - http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles. </bio>

Modern horses have a very different lifestyle to that of their ancestors. Even 50 years ago horses led very different lives to the ones today. Horses used to live on the plains in herds and foraging for grass continuously. But, for most of today's modern horses it is a very different scenario.

Though some horses do still wander about in paddocks many are now housed in stalls and don't have access to grass all day long. This change in eating pattern is the culprit of much colic. Colic is really a term to describe a horse's stomach pain. While there are lots of causes of colic a main source is feed.

The horse's stomach is very unique and in many ways sensitive. The horse's stomach is very small and is designed for multiple small meals or continuous eating and not the standard two large feeds we give them today.

Horses are no longer wild nor the work machines they were of yester year, we now keep horses as companion animals or show animal. And so, we tend to maintain them in stalls and so they are no longer able to graze. Whilst many horses have adapted to this modern living very well and will never get colic other horses are not so lucky.

Colic is one of the most frequent ailments that horse owners have to deal with and while mostly it is just a mild discomfort to the horse, sometimes it can prove fatal.

What happens is that instead of a constant small stream of food the horse's stomach is confronted with a rapid ingestion of a large amount of food. Horses can't tell when they are full and so will eat it all at once (hmmm sounds like a few humans I know). This rapid intake of food tends to shock the digestive system. As the stomach becomes over full, the 'good' bacteria that metabolizes the food die. Because the microbes are no longer available to break down the food it just tends to lie in the stomach and produce toxins. As these toxins build up in the horse's system the horse will start to become uncomfortable and show signs of colic.

Your horse may just look a bit uncomfortable and not be himself. He may start a fever and get up and down several times. This is a sure sign of colic. As soon as you notice any signs of colic, contact your veterinarian. The generally accepted treatment is to keep walking your horse around until the vet arrives. As the pain intensifies your horse may want to lie down and roll. It is most important that you do not let your horse roll. Rolling can cause the gut to twist and this is a serious internal problem often requiring surgery.

We hope your horse never has colic, but just in case you now know what to look for and what to do.

Happy Horsing
Jo Thompson<bio>Jo Thompson just loves her three horses and loves anything to do with horses.
Colic is a term used to describe uncontrollable crying of a healthy baby. If your baby is 5 months old and cries for hours at a time then chances are she is colicky. Colic is not a disease and it won't cause your baby long term harm but it is a tough thing to go through for both yourself and the baby.

Colic usually shows up around the 2nd or 3rd week of life. Babies often cry when they need change of nappies or when they are hungry but when they cry inconsolably at about the same time during the day -- most often during the evening or late afternoon, then you can be sure that colic is the culprit. Babies who are colicky usually have enlarged bellies and they usually extend or pull up their legs and passes gas when they cry. Also, some babies tend to get red in the face and their feet are usually very cold. In general, most babies which have colic appear uncomfortable and in pain.

Thankfully, colic tends to go away on your baby's 3rd or 4th month. By the 5th month, your baby should be over it. Yes, that's a long way to go and taking care of a colicky baby can be stressful, which is why you will need to take regular breaks to keep yourself in the best condition. You can have your partner take over while you go for a walk to let loose. Some mothers even cry just to relieve the tension.

It is believed that breastfed babies can become colicky because of their mother's diet. Dairy products, especially milk, cheese and yogurt are just some of the main causes of colic. Other suspects are spicy food, nuts, strawberries, vegetables like cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, garlic, coffee and alcohol. To see which of these foods are causing colic, try to avoid them all for a few days and then reintroduce one food at a time with an interval of at least two days for reintroductions. If your baby starts being fussy again after you eat a certain food, then you've discovered the culprit. You will need to abstain from this food until your baby outgrows her sensitivity.

Some people also believe that colic can be caused by wrong formula milk. This doesn't usually happen but it is still best to see a doctor and try switching formula or your doctor might suggest a milk-free and lactose-free milk supplement. For bottle-fed babies, you should try to reduce the amount of air that your baby swallows. Curved bottles or bottles with collapsible and disposable liners will probably work best for you. Also, make sure to burp your baby after feeding. Some babies tend to stop crying when they're wrapped snugly in a blanket or when they hear rhythmic sounds like the vacuum, and dryer. If you want to help your baby sleep, bring her to the part of your home which has the least stimulation. Noise, bright lights and a lot of people can aggravate the situation so try to avoid these.<bio>Mark Crockrum -Article Marketer http://www.baby-assistance.info</bio>

Baby colic is one of the most common conditions for week-old to 3-month old infants. Definitive causes of the ailment have not yet been identified, however, it is not a matter of serious concern. Babies outgrow colic by the time they reach the age of 6 months.

The "Rule of Three" is often used to determine whether or not the infant is suffering from colic. I will attempt to give you a picture of what is meant by "rule of three", then observe your child's behavior. If a baby cries for three hours or more, thrice a week for three consecutive weeks, then he is most likely to have this condition. The healthy yet distressed and inconsolable baby usually becomes irritable and cries for no apparent reason usually after meals or in the late afternoons and evenings.

The discomfort of crying too much may cause the infant's face to turn red. Gas releases become more frequent. The stomach or abdomen becomes bloated, causing the baby to bring its legs towards its chest.

Other contributing factors for baby colic include the maturity and development of their digestive and nervous systems. It can also be triggered by the activity of the baby's surroundings. For breast-feeding infants, the mother's diet and quality of food intake may also cause allergenic effects on the baby's digestive tract that can result to bloating.

Colic prevents the baby from getting enough sleep and can also place a certain degree of stress and exhaustion on the parents. Some parents may even lean towards depression, as they may feel unequipped to give what their child needs. Thus, it is important that family support remains solid and constant throughout this phase of a baby's life.

There is no single recommended treatment as different babies react differently to certain treatments or medicine. Homeopathic or alternative medicine such as Colic Calm has made its way into the market, which gives parents an option for providing relief for their child. Others have suggested that medicine is unnecessary and leave the condition to disappear over time.

To prevent baby colic make sure that you feed your baby on a regular basis. It is recommended to use a baby sling and take the child with you for a walk or while doing other activities around the house. Limit the amount of light and noise in the room during sleeping time to allow your kid to have a good night sleep. If symptoms persist, it is always best to consult your pediatrician for any dietary changes for the baby or if need be, for mothers as well. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of Your Favourite Shop - http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit Hapa Health - http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles. </bio>

Baby colic is characterized by repeated excessive crying episodes, without any distinguishable reason. Most often, parents tend to blame themselves as the cause of the crying and see it as their incapability to handle the baby. However, baby colic has nothing to do with parenting, and the real reason behind the disorder remains unclear. The interesting fact associated with this disease is that the disorder can typically occur in well fed healthy babies. A baby suffering with baby colic is seen crying three or more hours per day, three or more days per week, ongoing for three or more weeks, however, it is not considered as a serious disorder since the symptoms will gradually disappear by its own, without any particular treatment.

Usually the outbreak of baby colic starts from three weeks of age and becomes severe in between six weeks and eight weeks. It will slowly subside by three months of time. Any how, in some cases, baby colic will last for six months of time. Even though it does not cause any impairment in the growth and development o the child, it creates must annoyance to the parents since no parent can easily tolerate his or her child crying.

Baby colic can be differentiated from other disorders, with its characteristic symptom of periodic outbreak of crying, which cannot be soothed easily and associated symptoms such as baby extending its legs, arching its back, face becoming red, clenching its fists, passing gas and having difficulty in passing stools. It is also seen that it will regularly occur in early evenings, which is related with disturbances in melatonin diurnal rhythm. The underlying reason that caused the disease is constantly being searched for and the possible answers include adverse conditions while pregnancy such as maternal prenatal anxiety, cigarette smoking, or labor medication,

The treatment for baby colic is not definite since the possible reason is not clear. However, many reasons can be looked at. The important reasons include the insufficient neurological development of baby, digestive system related problems, gas, protein allergies and diet problems of feeding mothers. The primary care for the baby is given according to the symptoms for outbreak of crying.

Baby colic treatment mainly includes measures to console the child. Primarily check whether your baby has any discomfort such as the need to change the diaper or hunger. If these are not a problem, then try to soothe the baby by taking them in horizontal position and keep them in motion. You can cradle, rock or dance with them in hand if you have any discomfort to carry in hand, take the child in a sling or front pack. Listening to white music and vibrations such as of appliances is also seen as being soothing for the child.

In case of baby colic due to digestive complaints, you have to lay your baby on their stomach, in order to pass gas. Gripewater, Mylicon drops and colic tablets may have to be given in prescribed dosage to avoid gas and other such digestive problems. If the baby is milk intolerant or fructose intolerant, in bottle fed babies, try to use any of the specific formulas such as Whey-based, Soy-based, and Hypoallergenic formulas. In breast fed babies, the mother has to be conscious to avoid spicy foods and allergenic substances such as high fibre grains, beans, onions broccoli, cabbage, and caffeine in diet, to avoid discomfort for the baby.

Baby colic is a temporary disorder in infants, which require patient attention and pampering formulas to overcome the repeated bouts of crying. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles </bio>

Any parent will tell you that colic is one of the most excruciating experiences of early parenthood. The baby cries as if in dire pain, and there just seems to be nothing for a parent to do. A baby is suspected to have colic if, around the age of three weeks, the baby starts crying inconsolably for hours at a time. The condition is termed 'colic' because it was assumed that babies were crying due to stomach pain. Doctors are no longer sure that a stomach ache causes colic, but the term continues to be in use.

The first step is to ascertain the cause of distress. Newborn babies often cry because of hunger, earache, wetness or cold. If these factors can be safely ruled out, crying can be attributed to the mysterious colic. Sometimes little tummies do not agree with the protein in traditional baby formula or from a mother's milk. After consulting your doctor, change the formula. Switch to a soy-based formula. Even in breastfed babies, an excess of cows' milk products in the mother's diet can cause tummy aches. Root vegetables and highly acidic food products like chocolates, tomatoes, or grapefruit in the mother's diet can also upset the stomach of a feeding infant. Gas producing food like broccoli, cabbage, onions, cauliflower, peppers, and citrus fruits may all become suspect at such a time. Your doctor may advise you to go on an exclusion diet for some time. Most newborns outgrow their sensitivity to food and become naturally vigorous and robust within three to six months.

If the baby is being breastfed, it is necessary to feed on demand. The evening hours see a decline in production of milk. Feeding the baby often during these hours will ensure an abundant supply of milk. If the baby is being bottle-fed, care must be taken to hold the bottle properly, so that there is no swallowing of air. Patting the baby gently on the back after each feeding is another effective method of releasing gas. With the increasing incidences of cot deaths, doctors advise parents to put their babies to sleep on their back. However sometimes babies with colic like to lie on their stomachs. This is safe, so long as you are awake and vigilant.

Doctors sometimes attribute colic to maternal stress. It's only natural for mothers to get stressed when little babies cry until they are red in the face. But babies are very sensitive to stress and a mother whose nerves are frayed cannot calm a distressed baby. At such a time, mothers should get extra help and spend some time away from the scene. Take a warm bath or go for a stroll.

Traditionally, colicky babies have been fed with gripe water approximately half an hour before feeding. But these products should be checked for their ingredients. Some may contain artificial ingredients and preservatives. Sensitive digestive systems of colicky infants can definitely do without such irritants.

A warm aromatherapy bath calms and soothes the baby. Add a few drops of lavender to warm bath water and gently massage the tummy. This will help relieve painfully trapped gas. Babies also like to be in water.

Small babies need a lot of warmth and security. Swaddling the baby in warm clothes and holding it against the steady soothing rhythm of a parent's heartbeat can sometimes soothe the baby's pain. Walking, rocking, and repetitive movements also have a calming effect. Applying gentle pressure on the abdomen will help relieve stomach ache. This position is known as the 'colic hold.'

Finally, remember colic is a stage in the growth of your baby. This too will pass. <bio>Gray Rollins is a featured writer for AboutColic.
If your little bundle of joy has colic, you may wonder if you will survive this trying time. The good news is that colic is not permanent. The crying will stop and your happy baby will return. Until then, those hours of endless crying try even the most devoted parents. Here are a few tips for keeping your sanity with a colicky baby.

See Your Pediatrician

It is important to rule out other health problems if your baby has extended periods of crying. Colic is often accompanied by gastric disorders and feeding problems. These conditions can cause hours of crying alone. It is crucial to treat any underlying health problems. Get medical confirmation that your child has colic and not something else.

Most babies begin exhibiting symptoms of colic around three or four weeks of age. The condition may continue for four or five months. The exact cause is unknown, but a common theory is that some children are born with an underdeveloped nervous system that results in overstimulation and inconsolable bouts of crying. Colic is very distressing for babies and caregivers.

If you feel like hurting your child during an extended crying spell, you are not a bad parent. It means it is time to get help and support. Call a neighbor, a grandparent, or friend to care for the baby for a while or place the baby in a safe place, like the crib, and go outside for a few minutes of fresh air and quiet time. If you are feeling angry, walk away from the child and call for a back-up caregiver.

Try Repetitive or White Noise

Repetitive noises often soothe colicky babies. Special music CDs with a rhythmic heartbeat and soothing lullabies are available. You can also place a tennis shoe in the dryer, or try using white noise. White noise is an audible noise with a constant frequency spectrum. Tune a radio to a blank station, turn the TV to a `snow station', run a fan, dryer, hairdryer, or vacuum cleaner =96 they all produce white noise. White noise can be very soothing for colicky babies, perhaps because it blocks out other stimuli.

The Car Ride

Colicky babies love car rides. The wind noise and repetitive motion of the moving car quiets their crying spells. Stop at a red light and the wailing begins again, so unless you have all night and a full tank of gas, this is not the best option. A car ride does work in a pinch.

Reduce Stimulation

As the dark hour approaches of your baby's usual crying spell, decrease the stimulation near the baby as much as possible. Turn down lights, keep things quiet, and adjust the room temperature. You can place cotton in the baby's ears and cover his head with a hat to help reduce auditory stimulation. Swaddling is helpful for some babies. Wrap your infant snugly in a blanket, leaving only his head free.

Try the Swing

Baby swings work for some colicky babies. The rhythmic movement may stop the crying altogether or it may result in breaks between heavy wailing. This may be due to the constant motion or it may provide enough of a distraction to stop the crying.

Colic is not a life sentence to cohabitation with a screaming child. Colic resolves on its own, usually before the child reaches five months of age. Support from friends, family and other parents of a colicky baby are the most important intervention for any family dealing with colic. <bio>Find helpful and creative ideas for parents and grandparents while you shop a great selection of kids furniture and classic toys.
Colic is a painful stomach condition. Babies between the age of three and six months usually suffer from this condition. It is characterised by pain in the abdomen as a result of complete or partial blockage of one of the hollow tubes - intestines, ureters and bile ducts. The muscles lining the tube contract in order to expel the contents but cannot, and the resulting tension produces the pain. Typically, colic occurs between the six O'clock and ten O'clock evening feeds.

The baby should be given a little tepid water to sip. A small warm-water enema should be given to cleanse the bowels, if possible. This will be most effective in overcoming the problem. Feeding should not be resumed until all signs of colic have disappeared.

The mother should, in addition, look very carefully at her own diet, and regulate it according to the dietary restrictions for adults. The emphasis should be on natural foods, specially whole grain cereals, fresh fruits and raw vegetables. She should also avoid overfeeding of the chld in future. Four-hourly feeds and, if possible no night feeding, should be the rule.

Sometimes, the milk of the mother is affected from a psychological cause, such as bad temper, worry and great excitement. The baby should never be fed when the mother is in such a state. The home atmosphere should be kept quiet and calm, for all babies react to nervous tension and stress.

In case of bottle-feed babies, it should be ensured that the nipple is clean and that the hold is neither too large, nor too small. If the colic is caused by swallowing of the air, it can not be expelled while the baby is lying flat. He should therefore be held in vertical position and the swallowed air is likely to come up fairly quickly and this may relieve the pain. When the problem becomes severe, two firm pillows should be placed be beneath the mattress at the head end so that the mattress will be steep enough to raise the baby's head well above the level of his feet, but so not so steep that he slids down. Application of head to the abdomen in the form of a small towel wrung out of hot water and squeezed will also help recovery.

A mild tea made from the herb chamomile is regarded as a gentle and effectie home remedy for infantile colic.

This tea should be prepared by infusing one teaspoon of the herb in a cup of boiling water. It should then be strained through a filter and sweetened with a little honey. It should be gien to the infant in one teaspoon dose.

A liquid prepared from fennel seeds is considered beneficial in the treatment of colic suffered by older babies. This liquid is prepared by boiling one-fourth tea spoon of fennel in a little milk for five minutes and then strained.

An infusion of a carway seeds is another effective remedy for colic in older infants. A tablespoon of these seeds should be infused in a cup of boiling water. It should be allowed to stand for 20 minutes, and then strained through a filter. One teaspoon of this infusion should be given to the child from time to time till the pain subsides. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com , http://www.healtharticles-lk.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

Colic is a puzzlement, which has not been worked out as yet. No one in fact is familiar with what generates it, and there is no "single size fits every one" treatment for it also. The meaning of all this is that if your baby is colicky, the absence of belief in relation to what is incorrect and how to rectify it can make you go mad!

The positive information is that the baby's wailing does sooner or later come to an end, and also the colic stops in due course. But having a wailing baby is hard to deal with at the finest of times, and whilst you are by now exhausted and perhaps a little stressed out from a demanding day, it is extremely tough without a doubt.

Given below are a few points that several parents have discovered to be of use in either making a colicky baby sleep, or at the most it is of use in lessening the intensity of wailing.

1. Take your baby for a walk. Both clasping your baby either above alongside your shoulder and resting on your chest are proper stances. To a certain extent crying over and over again leads to formation of gas, so if not anything besides you might assist in releasing the gas and as a result decrease a little of your baby's uneasiness. For especially infantile babies, the thud of your heart thumping is frequently to a certain extent comforting, and can assist in relaxing them.

2. Rocking - It does not amount to what you make use of, whether it is a rocking chair on which you sit jointly, or gently sway your baby's cradle, or thump your baby's bouncer seat. The periodic movement is good for comforting a colicky baby. Yet again, clasping baby next to your chest whilst you sway to and fro in a chair assists as baby can listen to your heart beating.

3. Music - Babies are keen on music, so begin singing, or you can also switch on a TV or radio. Music time and again comforts a wailing baby, above all lullabies. A few babies illustrate a noticeable fondness for a certain melodic manner, and although it does not make them go off to sleep, it might aid to divert them sufficiently to discontinue with wailing.

4. Sucking - This technique functioned extremely fine with my daughter - she sought after to suck something. Initially I considered that she was famished, and so attempted to feed her a little extra, but my motherly health nurse believed that it might in fact possibly make things bad. As a result she recommended a pacifier. My daughter on no account would suck on a pacifier on any other time, however in the evenings while she suffered from colic, she in fact looked as if she was feeling well again when she started to suck on the pacifier. As soon as she stopped suffering from colic, she did not want it any more. I suppose by that time she was hooked on to her thumb as well!

Probably out of every one of these tips, you will come across 1 or 2 that will facilitate to either make your baby sleep or comfort your baby. And keep in mind - colic goes away in due course. Be certain that you continue to inform your health care practitioner in relation to the colic, as if it continues to go on for an excessively long time, then it might be essential to make sure of additional causes. <bio>Opal Victoria is a day care business owner and mother.
When the parties are over, the baby shower is a distant memory and all the baby gifts unwrapped, the real experience of being a new mom begins. And along with joys and extreme happiness comes some of the difficulties of having a newborn baby. Read on to find out how to calm a colicky baby from an experienced Mom.

The cause of colic is unknown. Roughly, one out of five babies is affected. It is extremely stressful, to both infant and parent. Fortunately, there are things that can be done to help lessen the effects, of this condition.

Infants as young as two weeks old can experience the painful symptoms of colic. By the age of four months most babies are no longer bothered by it. These cycles typically last three or four hours a day. However, many infants suffer as much as 12 hours a day or longer. (Every baby is different.)

Common symptoms of colic include constant fussing or crying even when baby is picked up. Because they are experiencing gastrointestinal pain, their stomachs are often distended and are hard, to the touch.

This pain may also cause them to draw their legs and arms inward one minute and stretch out and stiffen up the next. This can be quite alarming to parents. It's important to remember to try not to panic when this happens.

There are several ways you can calm a colicky baby. In some cases, a combination of these methods will produce the best results.

Swaddle the baby. Use a light weight blanket to wrap your baby. Doing so will actually prevent his or her micro reflex and provide an added feeling of security. (Micro reflex is the automatic flailing of arms, when frightened.)

Massage the baby. Sometimes a massage with help to alleviate the symptoms of colic or at least substantially reduce them. A light massage from head to toe and back again will calm the baby.

Any rhythmic motion will also help to calm fussy babies. Rocking them, walking around the room with them, placing them in a baby swing (if they are old enough) or taking them for a drive can all be helpful.

Mothers, who are breast-feeding, should avoid eating foods such as broccoli, beans, onions, garlic and anything spicy. These foods can all play a role in exacerbating symptoms and giving baby gas.

The specific formula given to an infant can also have something to do with whether or not they become colicky. Parents should try switching formulas, to one that is soy based, to better prevent the onset of colic.

Purchase a vibrating baby seat or place the infant in a standard baby seat near a washer or other vibrating appliance. These vibrations will usually have a calming effect. Turning on a vacuum cleaner may help, as well.

Caring for an infant, who exhibits symptoms of colic, can be heart wrenching and very stressful. In the event that the methods do not help to eliminate or alleviate the child's discomfort, over-the-counter medication is available.

In severe cases, a call to the child's pediatrician is recommended.<bio>This author lives in Flemington, NJ with her husband and 5 month old daughter and is an expert contributing author for a luxury baby gifts boutique offering variety of baby shower favors, baby gift baskets, handprint footprint kits and more.</bio>

If you were a baby, you'd cry too. After being thrust into a world full of strange people, strange sights and strange sounds, you'd want to return to the womb; a happy haven where it was warm, cozy, and the sound that lulled you to sleep was a pleasant kind of whooshing. So how do you show you are unsatisfied with your current living arrangement? You cry. And you drive your parents bonkers. What is a parent to do?

Experts believe that you can significantly decrease crying associated with colic and recreate this whooshing noise by playing white noise for your crying baby.

What is White Noise?

White noise is all around us. The humming of a fan, the road noise in the car, these are all forms of white noise. And in your baby's case, the whooshing in the womb was white noise. Quite simply, white noise is all the sound frequencies a human ear can hear all being heard at once. Almost like a crowded room of people all talking at once. That roar you hear is white noise.

Why Would My Baby Want to Hear White Noise?

Your baby needs something to soothe her and remind her of her happy haven in the womb. Playing white noise will accomplish this goal and more.

First, you can play white noise to help drown out, or mask other noises. Several people sleep with a fan running to not be disturbed by other sounds in the house. Likewise, by playing white noise while baby sleeps, most sounds will be masked. So, if the dog barks, or the phone rings, you don't have to worry about your baby being disturbed. She will sleep more soundly and be much happier.

Second, the white noise will mimic the sound your baby heard for 40 weeks or so while in the womb. That rush, whoosh, or roaring sound is easy to recreate with simple things you might have around the house. The sound that most resembles the sound baby heard is a vacuum cleaner running, but there are a few more options you could try.

How do I Recreate White Noise?

You can recreate white noise by using everyday items around the house. Below are some ideas.

- A radio set to static
- A vacuum cleaner running
- A fan running
- A dishwasher running
- A hair dryer running

The goal is to create a soothing atmosphere which reminds baby of her environment in the womb. You can take other actions to achieve this atmosphere by turning down the lights, turning on some white noise, and keep baby gently swaying (swings work great for this). Another idea for creating the womb environment is to swaddle your baby. Swaddling helps your baby feel safe and secure.

But I Don't Want to Burn Up My Appliances!

If you try running your vacuum cleaner during a crying spell and your baby calms down quickly, you might want to invest in a white noise cd, or white noise generator. You can find these readily available for purchase online.

A white noise cd is more portable. You can just throw it in your diaper bag and go. If you prefer, you can opt to download a white noise mp3 and have them on your computer to burn several disks for your baby's other caretakers. The other plus about having a white noise cd is you can control the volume. You can also put the cd on repeat and let it go for hours.

So, if your baby has colic, and you are looking for a fast, easy solution to try to soothe her crying, pull out your vacuum and plug it in. Recreate that happy haven she experienced in the womb by making your own white noise. Baby will get some peace, and mommy and daddy will get some quiet.<bio>Cherie Stirewalt is a colic baby survivor and writes about the colic remedies she mastered to soothe her baby's crying. Download your own white noise mp3 and get started on stopping your baby's colic today!</bio>

"I think your horse has colic." Words to strike fear into any horse owner's heart. But what is colic? What signs should you look for?

Colic refers to pain originating in the abdomen. Generally horses do not tolerate abdominal pain very well. So if there is any disturbance of gut function they tend to show signs of pain.

Signs of mild discomfort might be stretching, standing as if to urinate, and pawing the ground. If he is more painful the horse will get up and down, and roll to try to get more comfortable. He will start sweating. More serious cases will get up and down and roll constantly.

If you think your horse has colic, you should call an experienced equine vet straight away. He or she will be able to provide emergency pain relief and decide whether further treatment is necessary.

What can you do while you wait for the vet to arrive? Taking your horse for a walk often helps. It may encourage his guts to work normally and soothe the pain. It may also prevent him lying down to roll. If he is lying down quietly then let him stay there.

It used to be thought that a horse could cause a twisted gut by rolling. That is probably not true. But it is best to prevent him rolling if you can. That way you will prevent him injuring himself by banging himself on the stable walls. But be careful that you don't get injured yourself. Horses often forget all their normal manners when they are in pain.

There are many different reasons for horses to get colic. But often the signs look similar regardless of the cause.

What will the vet do to investigate the problem? He or she will listen to the abdomen with a stethoscope to tell whether there is more or less activity in the gut than normal.

The heart rate gives a good indication of the severity of the pain and the seriousness of the problem. A horse with a normal heart rate probably does not have a serious problem. Whereas a high heart rate is not such a good sign.

A very useful part of the examination is the rectal examination. By feeling the intestines, the vet may be able to identify the cause of the problem. It goes without saying that this is a very skilled procedure, that is potentially hazardous for both the vet and the horse. But for an experienced equine vet the information it gives is invaluable in deciding the nature of the problem. It may reveal a blockage, or a swollen loop of intestines as a result of a twist or other intestinal catastrophe.

In all but the most straightforward cases the vet may pass a tube through the nose into the stomach . It sounds unpleasant but often may make the horse more comfortable by releasing the pressure in the stomach. It can also give the vet useful information about whether the stomach is emptying properly.

Sometimes the horse is in so much pain that it is impossible for the vet to examine him properly without first giving a dose of sedative or pain killer.

Only by considering all of the signs revealed by a careful examination is the vet able to make a tentative diagnosis. Even then it may not be possible to tell exactly what is going on.

Sometimes, after the first examination, it will be apparent that the horse needs emergency surgery. But more usually the vet will decide to treat the horse with a short-acting pain-killer and review his condition after a couple of hours. Most cases show a rapid improvement. But some will either not respond to the treatment, or they will improve at first, only to start showing signs of pain again later.

Rather than having to call the vet out several times, it is usually better to transport these cases to a specialist equine practice where they can be monitored closely and surgery can be performed if necessary.

Fortunately the vast majority of cases respond to medical treatment. But if surgery is needed - it is important to operate early. The chance of a successful outcome is much better if the operation is carried out before too much damage has occurred.
One of the worst feelings you can experience is watching your child endure pain of any kind. So when you have to watch your baby deal with painful gas, you want to do whatever you can to stop it....fast. Gas is very common in infants and since crying is their only way to communicate, you are dealing not only with a gassy baby, but also an extra cranky baby.

So, why not try to prevent gas bubble buildup before it starts? Here are 6 ways to bust up baby gas.

Mom's Diet

If you are a mom who breastfeeds, be sure to avoid gas-causing foods such as:
* Caffeine (colas, tea, coffee and, yes, chocolate)
* Dairy (baby may be lactose intolerant)
* Nuts
* Broccoli
* Beans
Changing your diet could make a big difference.

All Bottles are Not Created Equal

If you are bottle-feeding, use bottles that are engineered to help reduce baby's intake of air. Some bottles have nipples that are too large, and baby will eat too fast. Then, some bottles have nipples that are too small, causing baby to suck harder and take in more air. Bottles like Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Baby Bottle contain an internal vent that eliminates the vacuum and air bubbles associated with other bottles.

Don't Forget to Burp

To avoid gas from moving into the digestive tract, remember to burp baby often (if you are bottle-feeding, after every 2-3 ounces, and if you are breastfeeding, after each breast). Try also to feed baby at a 45-degree angle or better. Three of the best burping positions are:

Over the shoulder. Place a diaper cloth or burp rag on your shoulder and place your baby right up on the cloth. Gently pat or rub her back to induce the burp. Don't pat too hard or you will cause baby to spit up all over you.

On the lap. Place diaper cloth on your lap and place baby on her belly. Gently pat or rub her back to induce the burp.

Over the hand.Hold baby upright on your lap and drape a diaper cloth over your hand. Support baby's chin in your hand and gently pat or rub her back.

Bust a Bicycle Move

Lay baby on her back. Gently grab her ankles and move her legs in a bicycling motion in order to get the trapped gas bubbles moving.

Formula for Disaster

Not all formulas agree with all babies. Some formulas contain hard-to-digest proteins that result in gas buildup. Simply trying a different formula like Nestle Good Start may work wonders. Good Start contains proteins that are broken down and easier for your baby to digest.

If All Else Fails

Sometimes gas is unavoidable. Even after you try your best prevention methods. You might want to try gripe water, a tried and true homeopathic remedy used for over a century. Gripe Water contains natural ingredients like peppermint, chamomile, and ginger that gently bust up the gas bubbles and soothe your baby quickly.

Don't watch your baby suffer one more minute. Try one, or all of the methods above and your baby will be on her way to gas-free in no time.<bio>Cherie Stirewalt is a colic baby survivor and enlightens parents about colic remedies. Illnesses or diseases often causes minor changes in your horse's physical appearance or blood work that needs to be observed by a veterinarian.

Common illnesses, like flu, can be prevented by immunization and therefore all horses should receive a flu vaccine at least twice a year. Horses that compete in events should be revaccinated four times per year, as this vaccine does not protect horses for long periods of time.

Yearly vaccination can also avoid equine encephalomyelitis, which is a deadly virus spread by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes in different areas spread different forms of encephalomyelitis and therefore horses travelling to competitions should be vaccinated for several different strains of this virus.

Mosquitoes also spread the West Nile virus, a lethal disease, and therefore it is essential that horses should be vaccinated at least annually against this virus. This vaccine does not protect the horse for as long as other vaccines and therefore it is advised to have your veterinarian immunize twice a year.

Horses infected by the tetanus disease usually die a painful death although some may recover with sufficient medical care. Tetanus vaccines are essential on a yearly basis and can prevent this lethal disease from even occurring.

Horses are susceptible to worms as they graze on land where other animals have been and therefore needs to be dewormed on a regular basis. Untreated worms can even be deadly for horses and that is why the dewormer should be used effectively. De-worming medication should be rotated since worms can build up immunity against the products.

Horse-owners should also have knowledge of colic, the most common problem that horses can suffer from. Be aware of the signs of colic and how to treat colic until the vet arrives. The most common symptoms include signs of pain, kicking or biting at his stomach area, sweating, pacing, lying on its side or pawing the ground. The first step to follow is to take its food away from him and then call a veterinarian immediately. Put the horse on a lead and let him walk around as much as possible until the veterinarian arrives and starts the treatment. <bio>This article was produced by Horseback Riding Vacations, your leading operator in high quality trail riding vacations and training clinics. http://www.horseback-riding-vacations.com/ </bio>
