It is a strange, mystical, ordinary, wonderful, miserable, fantastic life that I live. If that statement seems paradoxical, then so be it, for that is the stuff life is made of. Our paths are not always strewn with flowers and the sun doesn't always shine on our efforts. There are times when the road becomes rocky and the wind chills our very bones. During those rough times, it's no use to whine. There are already too many "whine"-a-holics around. At times, it feels as if they have all decided, coincidentally, to pay me a visit. It's not that I haven't whined; it's just that whining is a way of finding excuses, blaming others, playing a victim or just playing host to a pity party. Whining gets us nowhere fast. It drains what energy we have and creates a self-fulfilling whirlpool of negativity that sucks everything down into its perilous depths.

People like to be around others who make them feel better about themselves. Too much of a self-centered attitude drives others away. Perhaps, the secret lies in helping others to achieve happiness. And speaking of secrets,I've been hoping that Gideon and Marla would tell me more about this "Greatest Secret in the Universe." The various Lasik clinics sound anywhere from impersonal to something similar to Dr. Frankenstein's lab, and the Lasik procedure itself sounds, well, surreal. It seems like the only people that would get Lasik are those with such bad vision that they cannot get out of bed without their glasses on.

Well, let me give you my story of how I chose Lasik. First of all, my vision is not good, but not terrible either. I can actually go to movies and see well enough to enjoy the film without glasses, but I need glasses to drive in order to read the street signs far enough away to act on the information. So for me, Lasik was not necessary, but I figured would simplify my life. I am outdoors very frequently, backpacking, climbing hills, and mountain biking. Glasses do not last long with me, and I am frequently grinding into the dirt which is not the best situation for contact lenses. For these reasons, Lasik looked very appealing.

The paragraph above might make you think I am a "manly guy" (hope so, think so!), so why on earth would I be afraid of a little Lasik scalpel? Nowadays Lasik physicians can get a laser to cut the flap in the eye, which is more than a little better than a sharp blade. But anyway, I had too many spills in my life to think any sharp object nearing my eye was a good idea, even under the skilled hands of a Lasik physician.

After talking with three (yes, three!) independent Lasik physicians, they each assured me that a 28 year old guy in nearly perfect health (OK, I exaggerate a bit) with moderate nearsightedness was one of the very best candidates for a successful Lasik procedure. I decided to schedule my Lasik procedure with the one that had the best track record, and coincidentally took the most time to explain everything about Lasik to me.

The Lasik surgery was not painful, though I accepted nearly everything they offered to give me comfort, including a sedative and a teddy bear. (I even went back to take a picture of me and the Lasik comforting teddy bear.) The only strange thing I remember about the Lasik procedure itself was a smell, something vaguely like hair burning. I suppose that was my eye. I am kind of glad they didn't tell me to expect that before the Lasik procedure, I am not sure I would have gone in.

After a few years, I guess I was a nearly perfect Lasik client, as my eyes now have 20/20 vision and have remained stable long after the Lasik operation. Young was born and raised in Colorado and started singing when he was nine. He has four brothers and is also interested in athletics as well as music. He tried to pursue a career in music himself before trying out for American Idol. He performed Westlife's "Swear It Again" during his audition and swiftly got a ticket to Hollywood. During the show, he showed that he has a wide range of musical ability by excelling at performing songs ranging from Kenny Rogers to Michael Jackson. He finished seventh in the competition.

After Idol, he helped write the Daughtry song "It's Not Over," which garnered him a Grammy nomination. He also released his own self-titled album, writing seven of the songs himself. Other writers include the famous Desmond Child. The album made it to number 160 on the Billboard 200 chart. The T-Bird's female counterparts, The Pink Ladies, hesitantly take Sandy under their wing and introduce her to the world of greasers. As Sandy and Danny sort out their feelings, a television dance program chooses their high school as a location for their next show. The couple goes through more hardships before learning they have to compromise a little to make their relationship work.

The musical features some of the most well-known music on Broadway and is the perfect place to showcase a voice like Young's. Songs like "Summer Nights," "We Go Together," "Those Magic Changes" and "Greased Lightning" have kept audiences singing along for years. The musical inspired a hit movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John in 1978. Previously, the area that has been called "Times Square" for over 100 years was known as The Longacre. On April 8, 1904, the name was changed to Times Square to commemorate the official opening of the brand new New York Times Building located on the triangle of land at the intersection of Broadway, 42nd Street, and 7th Avenue. The building was the tallest in Manhattan at the time. In 1913, the New York Times moved to a larger facility across Broadway and the New York Times Building was renamed the Allied Chemical Building. New Year's Eve at Times Square is now a global tradition. The famous ball (currently made of Waterford Crystal) drops from One Times Square, a tradition that began on December 31, 1907 and has continued ever since, except during World War Two when a moment of silence was observed followed by the tolling of church bells, as the blackout restrictions prevented excessive New Year's Eve festivities.

Times Square has cemented its place in American popular culture. It has been featured in movies such as Vanilla Sky, King Kong, and Spider-Man.
