Those persons who work near a chlorine pool, such as swimming instructors, life guards, or even administrators may be damaging their lungs. A recent study in the European Respiratory Journal found that harmful compounds in the air can damage delicate lung tissue and cause an increase in respiratory illness.

The study interviewed 624 persons who are in close contact with a chlorine pool for a significant period of time during their day. Then the air was sampled at those pools the subjects were exposed to.

The researchers were most interested in a chlorine compounds known as chloramines. These are formed with chlorine, which is used to sanitize pool water, reacts with human waste products such as sweat and urine.

The most potent chloramine is trichloramine, which is known to cause respiratory symptoms.

Trichloroamine levels were found to be at least 3 times higher in pools than other areas. Those person with the greatest exposure, namely swimming instructors and life guards had more than twice the incidence of upper respiratory illnesses such as sore throat and sinus infections compared to the lesser exposed persons, such as those in administration. Their risk of chronic upper respiratory illness was more than 3 times.

When the researchers compared the respiratory symptoms to the common population, there was more than a 40 percent increase in chest tightness in those routinely exposed to trichloramines and the incidence was more than 7 times the general population for shortness of breath on exertion.

The authors stress that pool safety should not only focus on the water quality but also the air quality. Trichloramines and other noxious compounds in the air could severely damage lung function with long term exposure, even in an otherwise healthy person.

There are chlorine alternatives available on the market today. While these may not make sense for public pools at this time, lifeguards should limit their exposure by taking 10 minute breaks to get fresh air away from the pool along with shorter shifts if that is an option. <bio>Supplement News delivers frequently updated information into the specific categories of our blog.
We all enjoy soaking or swimming in a warm crystal clear pool or hot tub yet at times keeping that sparkle can be a trying experience. Keeping your pools chemicals in the proper range is not only necessary to maintain that sparkle but also to keep your pool or hot tub safe for swimmers.

There are three basic ways to keep your pool clean and safe for swimming the traditional chlorine system, biguanide and mineral systems each are safe and effective for use in outdoor pools and hot tubs. Each system needs to be used independently of the other so which ever system you start using you must continue to use that system. You will also need to purchase the proper testing equipment for your system.

The old standard chlorine is available almost every place from your local pool supply store to Wal-Mart it is relatively cheap and easy to monitor and use. The big drawbacks of chlorine are it is harsh on your skin and can cause bathing suits and hair color to fade. Stabilized chlorine should be used in a pool or hot tub that is exposed to sunlight if your spa is inside or is not in direct sunlight non stabilized chlorine can be used.

The next type of pool sanitizers are the mineral systems these release minerals such as copper, zinc and silver into the water to keep the pool or hot tub algae and bacteria free. Generally the mineral system does use a small amount of chlorine to make sure the system is efficacious.

The third type of pool sanitizer is the "Bio" type of sanitizers such as Bioguard and BioDex. These all liquid sanitizers are very easy to use but they do require a specific testing unit and can not be used with chlorine. These sanitizers do not have the same harsh effects of chlorine and do not bleach out hair and swim suits.

Every type of pool sanitizers requires an oxidizer, the oxidizer or shock treatment removes the oils, lotions and other unwanted contaminations form the pool. Not all shock treatments are the same although monopersulfate which is an oxygen based oxidizer. Chlorine based shock treatments are also oxygen based. Chlorine shock should never be used with the Biguanide sanitizing system uses hydrogen peroxide as the main oxidizer.

No matter what type of sanitizer you use in your pool or hot tub you need to start with the basics. Make sure your Ph is between 7.4 and 7.6 this prevents corrosion and scale build up and reduces the irritation to swimmers skin and eyes. <bio>Jake Plumer is a writer for http://www.a1hottub.com. </bio>

Water filters are an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. Whether you have a countertop water filter, refrigerator water, whole house water filter or others, having clean, filtered water in your house is more important than you may even realize. To begin with, most tap contains VOCs. VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, include a variety of chemicals that can cause negative health conditions, both short-term and long-term. Along with being found in tap water, VOCs are found in thousands of products including glues, paints and pesticides. Short-term effects of VOCs include irritation of the eye, nose and throat, headaches and nausea.

Carbon is also responsible for removing impurities such as pesticides and insecticides. Consumption of these impurities can lead to serious stomach complications or other bodily ailments. Another essential feature of water filters is their ability to remove chlorine from the water. In addition to greatly improving the taste and odor of tap water, the removal of chlorine provides significant health benefits. If you are using a shower or whole house water filter, the removal of chlorine can improve your body's health. Excess amounts of chlorine can cause conditions such as thinning of the hair or major irritation of the skin. Showering in water that is unfiltered is similar to spending too much time in an over-chlorinated pool.

Water filters also remove intestinal parasite, known as giardia. Giardia can cause unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea or cramps. By using a water filter, unsafe tap water can be transformed into drinking water that is not only pleasant but also much more healthy.

Before purchasing any type of water filter, it is important to do some research on the brand and specific filter you are planning to purchase. A study conducted by a California environmental group concluded that certain brands of water filters can actually increase the amount of lead in water. This situation normally occurred when filters were attached to brass faucets. Consumption of lead can negatively affect almost every system within the body. The effects of lead are most detrimental towards fetuses, infants and children. This is because their tissue is much more sensitive than that of an adult. <bio>For more information about house water filters please visit http://WaterFilters.Blueble.com and buy water filters online. </bio>

Chlorination has been the traditional method of pool sanitation for decades--almost by default, since there were no alternatives for this crucial aspect of owning a swimming pool. However, for many pool owners, chlorination is an old and outdated pool sanitation method they've discarded in favor of maintaining a salt water pool.

Chlorine

So what's the problem with chlorine, anyway? It does exactly what it needs to--kills algae and bacteria, keeping the pool attractive and more importantly, a safe and sanitary place to swim. A pool that doesn't get regular chlorine treatments will quickly become clogged with thick green algae. Depending on where you live, and especially in a warm climate like Florida, an untreated pool can become a green, sludgy nightmare inside of a week--the chlorine is definitely important.

If you maintain a chlorinated pool, however, it's not enough to dump chlorine in periodically and let the pool fend for itself. There are other chemicals to add too, as well as regular testing to keep an eye on water quality. For example, you must make sure there is enough free available chlorine (meaning chlorine that is active) in the water to keep up with sanitizing the water. This is usually done with the use of weekly chlorine tablets.

Another important aspect of this maintenance is PH levels--the acidity or alkalinity of the water. If the PH gets too high, the chlorine in the pool isn't able to work as efficiently. However, if the PH drops too low, the water quickly becomes too acidic to swim in comfortably. Keeping the PH at the right level is somewhat difficult, because the range at which it's 'just right' is very narrow and many factors, including rain, affect this.

Chlorine is important for sanitation, but for many people it's also a source of irritation. The harsh chemicals that are added to pre-packaged pool chlorine irritate the skin and eyes, making swimming a highly unpleasant experience. It is important to note that it's not the chlorine that's the problem--in most cases it's the chemicals which are added to the pre-packaged mix.

Salt Water

The main advantage of a salt water pool isn't that it doesn't use chlorine. In fact, a salt water pool does use chlorine to keep the water clean. The advantage is that the pool owner doesn't add chlorine to the pool--that means no pre-packaged chlorine, and less irritation for people who are sensitive to the added chemicals. Salt water tends to be much softer than chlorinated water, so it's much more pleasurable to swim in, and is much less harsh on your skin. In addition, a salt water pool usually has a much lower concentration of chlorine than a chlorinated pool.

Another important benefit is more of a long-term one. In the short term, converting from chlorine to a salt water pool will involve some cash outlay, since there are a few system components you'll need to by. It'll run approximately $1000-$1500 to convert a traditional chlorine system to a salt water system. Over two or three years, however, the money you spend is recouped due to not having to buy extra chlorine for the pool. Just a bag of salt which is much less expensive.

Just to be clear though, salt water pools do in fact use chlorine to sanitize and the water. So if you are not adding chlorine tablets or shock, how does that work?

It works because of the chemical composition of salt, which is made up of chlorine and sodium. Within the salt water system is a unit called a salt-chlorine generator, which uses electrolysis to generate chlorine by separating the sodium and chlorine molecules in the salt you add to the pool. As the generator unit separates out the chlorine, it's returned to the pool, where it keeps the water clean and sanitary.

A well-maintained salt pool is an absolute delight to swim in, with softer, more comfortable water that doesn't irritate. It doesn't taste salty, either, as you might think, because it has such a low concentration of salt that it's officially considered to be fresh water! In the ocean, the salt concentration is between 20,000 to 35,000 parts per million, whereas in a salt water pool, it's just 3,000 to 6,000.

Finally, don't be fooled into thinking that a salt water pool maintains itself. It doesn't. You still need to check PH levels and carry out other maintenance tasks. However, you'll benefit from lower maintenance costs and a more enjoyable swimming experience, which definitely makes it worthwhile.<bio>Calum and Kathleen MacKenzie are Owners of Real Living Southern Homes a leading real estate company serving the Tampa FL real estate market. Water containing high concentration of these substances is unsafe for human consumption. They may be visible or microscopic and vary from soluble to insoluble. Water contaminants are grouped into six main categories.

Microorganisms

Microorganisms are microscopic organisms commonly referred to as germs. They are naturally present in water or in the environment. However, humans and animals contribute greatly to water micro organic contamination. This is common along lakes and rivers where there is human activity. Animal and human fecal wastes constitute most of microscopic contaminants. Water runoff has also been noted to cause water contamination. The level of contamination is determined by the measure of turbidity. Normally, high turbidity is associated with high levels of contamination by microorganisms.

Examples of microorganisms include bacteria, viruses, fungus and protozoa.

Microscopic organisms cause many water borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery and most gastrointestinal disorders.

Disinfectant By-Products

Disinfectant by-products are elements or compounds that arise as a result of water purification using chemicals. Examples include chlorite, bromate haloacetic acid and total trihalomethanes. Disinfectant by-products are carcinogenic in nature. Most of them are closely associated with liver, kidney and central nervous system disorders. Reliable sources indicate that infants suffer from anemia when they drink water contaminated by these byproducts.

Disinfectants

Disinfectants are chemicals added to water to eliminate microorganisms. There are three harmful compounds in disinfectants. These are: chlorine, chloramines and chlorine dioxide. Disinfectants cause irritation in the nose and eyes. They also cause anemia, renal conditions, liver problems, stomach discomfort and nervous system problems in infants.

Inorganic chemicals

Inorganic chemicals are synthetic or natural chemicals that do not contain carbon elements. They come from erosion of natural deposits, oil refineries, electronic factories and asbestos cement decay. They also originate from mines, corroded galvanized pipes or household plumbing systems. Fertilizers contain a considerable amount of inorganic chemicals.

Examples of inorganic contaminants include: barium, asbestos, cadmium, arsenic, copper, lead, mercury, zinc, and beryllium. Ailments related to inorganic water contaminants are hypertension, renal, dermatological, intestinal and endocrine disorders.

Radio-nuclides

Radio-nuclides are radioactive elements. Their presence in drinking water will cause cancer and kidney toxicity. Radio-nuclides come from erosion of man-made or natural mineral deposits. Examples are; uranium, alpha and beta particles.

Organic chemicals

Organic chemicals are compounds that contain carbon elements. The main sources of organic chemical contaminants are sewages, herbicides and incinerators. Industrial discharge may contain unacceptable levels of organic chemicals. Insecticides used to control plant insects leach from soils to water bodies making them unsafe for drinking.

Majority of the hydrocarbons are considered water contaminants. Benzene compounds and chloride alkanes, alkynes and alkenes are the main organic contaminants. Reliable sources indicate that systemic disorders are caused by most organic chemicals found in water. Cataract and some reproductive illnesses are caused by organic contaminants.

Scientist and researchers have come up with ways of purifying water depending on the nature of contaminants or levels of contamination.
Shower water filters are an essential component to any complete home water filtration system. A shower water filter allows you to enjoy a warm and relaxing shower, without the potential risk of exposure to harmful elements found in standard tap water. Chlorine is one of the biggest problems found in normal tap water. If your body is continually exposed to chlorine during a shower, it can lead to problems such as dry skin, irritated eyes or color distortion of the hair. This is due to the fact that chlorine strips the natural protective oils from the skin and hair, which leads to the excess dryness. If the chlorine is filtered out of the water, the skin and hair will greatly benefit. Removing chlorine can also be beneficial for individuals suffering from asthma and allergy sufferers, as inhalation of chlorine vapors can complicate those conditions. Showering with unfiltered tap water can be compared to spending ten to twenty minutes in an extremely chlorinated pool everyday. The most well-known shower water filter is the Aquasana Shower Filter, which retails for sixty to eighty dollars, depending on where it is purchased.

Shower waters filters can be easily installed in a few minutes. Once the water filter is properly installed, it provides healthy, chemical free water for showering. The best feature of the shower filter is its efficiency in removing chlorine from the water. It also greatly reduces harmful VOCs, which are the same harmful substances found in paints and pesticides. The filter also enhances the pH balance, which creates an overall healthier showering environment.

Most shower filters have an average life span of six months or ten thousand gallons. The filter can handle operating temperatures of 115 degrees, which is more than ample, as most average shower temperatures are 100 degrees. The filter fits well on the head of the shower. Most filters use two stages to purify the tap water. The first stage of the filter system removes all chlorine and improves the pH balance. The shower filter system brings the pH of the water to 7.5. This is accomplished by using a natural copper and zinc mineral media, which is called KDF-55D. KDF-55D removes any acidic components in the water, while retaining helpful trace minerals. The second stage of the filtering process employs a carbonized coconut shell media, which is responsible for the task of removing any synthetic chemicals and VOCs.

Most shower filters come with an adjustable pressure shower head which prevents any loss of water pressure. The filter systems are also compatible with most standard shower heads and hand held shower heads. In addition to providing health benefits, shower water filters also remove limestone, marble and other hard metals from the tap water. This helps to prevent scaling and hard water deposits in the shower or bathtub. <bio>Mike Tracy writes guides and reviews for Water Filters at http://Blueble.com.
Three Roof Cleaning Methods: Stained by algae or not, roofs are cleaned using any of three common methods, each of which has its own set of pros and cons. These methods are, pressure washing, and the application of solutions containing either, chlorine bleach or sodium hydroxide. When performed correctly and only once, these techniques clean roofs effectively without significant adverse effects. The problem is, they usually have to be repeated every six to 18 months to maintain cleanliness.

Chlorine Solution Washes: Chlorine bleach solution application requires a lot less rinsing than the two other methods, thereby allowing a cleaning procedure of shorter duration. One good consequence of a quicker process is less wear and tear for the roof. However, chlorine can be toxic to some people and plants, so care should be exercised to protect employees or residents, as well as the property itself, from spray runoffs. Asphalt shingle roofs are particularly well adapted to this type of cleaning.

Sodium Hydroxide-based Cleaning: Sodium hydroxide-based cleaners are very effective degreasers, but they require a lot more rinsing than chlorine solutions. As a result, using this type of cleaning agent can be time-consuming and carries with it greater risk for causing damage to the roof. And, while only 100 psi of force is needed to rinse away a sodium hydroxide-based compound on an asphalt shingle roof, some amount of asphalt granule loss is to be expected still. Even if advertisements would have us believe otherwise, sodium hydroxide can be toxic too, and should be kept from coming into contact with persons and property, and especially plants in the surrounding landscape. It is also caustic, so high levels of this compound may cause irreversible damage to roofs, especially those made of asphalt shingles.

Pressure Washing: Pressure washing is an option only for roofs made either of concrete, metal or barrel tiles. One of the distinct advantages of this method is that it does not require the use of chemicals, which does away with some costs, and which makes it more environment-friendly. This procedure, however, requires more time to perform and may exert more strain than some roofs can handle. Another downside is that it can wash away the thin layer of coloring with which some roof tiles are coated. The natural gray color of the concrete roof begins to show through, requiring the additional task of painting or staining. <bio>http://www.pressurewashingking.com </bio>

Cleaning and purifying the water in your hot tub may not sound as easy or pleasant as it seems. Scraping off dirt and residue from various parts of the hot tub, constantly using the foul-smelling chlorine and bromine -- heck, it sounds like hot tubs are all trouble, right?

Well, not necessarily. You can easily make the hot tub maintenance much easier by installing hot tub ozonators. These things generate ozone gas, which is then introduced to the water. Then the real fun begins. Ozone gas acts as a water disinfectant, purifier and cleaner, killing all bacteria, viruses, yeasts, mol, mildews and cysts on contact, while leaving no trace whatsoever, except bubbles in the water. Speaking in scientific terms, (let's remember chemistry here) when an ozone molecule comes to contact with the bacteria, an oxygen atom is separated from the molecule and it then attaches to the bacteria itself. The result of the process above means one thing -- the bacteria is killed. Instantly. After doing its job, the ozone molecule transforms to oxygen.

Hot tub ozonators also highly reduce the need to use various water cleaning chemicals, like chlorine and bromine. That is a very nice thing, because you can kiss good-bye the dreaded chlorine smell, which is already typically associated with all the swimming pools and hot tubs. Hot tub ozonators, however, do not fully remove all other water cleansing means from the picture, but as mentioned before, greatly reduce the need to use them, and makes the whole process much more effective.

All this together means that the hot tub ozonators clean the water about 3,000 times faster that all-chemical-only water cleaning methods. Additionally, when chlorine is not used so often, the probability of skin irritation and burning sensation of the eyes, decreases significantly, too. So in all, the use of hot tub ozonators saves money and saves your well-being while making your hot tub water crystal clear and pure. When you employ hot tub ozonators, water quality remains better and you can keep the same water in the hot tub for longer. This will in turn decrease the wear and tear of your hot tub. <bio>George W. Smith - Hot Tub Expert, an administrator of http://www.hotin.eu Hot Tubs portal.
Cleaning your kitchen is a necessary chore in order to have a clean working environment and also to avoid health hazards. Cleaning your kitchen will go faster if you have a checklist to follow. Here's some helpful cleaning tips:

How to clean a porcelain kitchen sink:

**Stop up the sink and fill sink with warm water, then add chlorine bleach. Let water soak in sink for one hour. For more stubborn stains, line sink with paper towels saturated with chlorine and let them sit in the there for 8 to 10 hours. WARNING: Do not use chlorine bleach for sinks that are cracked or too porous, this will cause the bleach to leak through and damage the iron base, which leads to rusting.

How to clean a steel sink:

**Wash sink with hot sudsy water. Avoid abrasive cleansers.

**Clean and polish with glass cleaner.

**Remove scratches or pit spots by rubbing sink gently with very fine steel wool. Buff with a soft cloth.

Get rid of kitchen sink odor -- once every week pour one handful of baking soda down the drain and run hot water for a minute or so. You can also pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain and let it sit for 30 minutes, rinse with hot water.

Avoid clogged drains -- never pour cooking grease or coffee grounds down the kitchen drain.

Hardened food stains -- the quickest way to get rid of hardened food stains is to pry them up with an ice scraper. If you have more patience, you can soak stains with soapy water, which will dissolve them.

Clean countertop stains -- most countertop stains can be cleaned up with baking soda and a damp soft cloth. For persistent stains add a little chlorine bleach to a damp cloth and wipe.

Deodorize your cutting board -- to remove smells from your wooden cutting board, rub it with a freshly cut lemon, rinse and dry. <bio>Donna Monday Are you embarrassed to have friends and family over because your home is always so messy?
You need not to purchase the most expensive kinds of fish just to set up the best aquarium. This can be luxurious already. What you need to know is the proper way of maintaining your aquarium to make it pleasing to the eyes at all times.

Besides all other aquarium supplies, the fish is the most important. It cannot be called an aquarium without the species that will swim into it. This can come in varying types depending on the aquarium you put up.

Aquarium fish can be purchased in extraordinary color patterns. It comes in red, white, green, purple and even blue. In most cases, the male fish has brighter color and longer fins than the female fish. Typically, the more vibrant is the better because it can add appeal inside the aquarium.

There is a specific lifespan for the fish. However, it can be changed through your maintenance. There are times that fish has longer lifespan but due to your negligence, it can be shorten to months instead of years. This will just be a waste of money so better to take note of this factor.

Below are some reminders for proficient care of your aquarium fish:

1. Have regular check for the unnecessary things that may fall into the aquarium.

Cleanliness is very essential for your maintenance. This will not concern the pleasing appeal of the aquarium alone but most particularly the health of the species residing in the habitat. You can use filtration supply on this matter. Cleaning habit can be done weekly or you can do it gradually if you see some falling food remains at the top of the aquarium.

2. Beware from buying aggressive species.

Peaceful types of fish are more advisable because aggressive specie can affect the entire habitat. One can kill the other. Prevent this scenario to happen because you can probably end up with your aquarium to nothing.

3. Do not overfeed the aquarium fish.

Some fish are only required to be fed once a day although others are for twice. Overfeeding is not helpful nor will it make your fish grow larger instantly. Many cases have shown that it can cause death to your fish.

4. When changing the water, add product that will remove chlorine in the water.

Chlorine can be toxicant for your fish. You can purchase products from pet stores in order to eliminate the amount of chlorine in the water.

If you care for your fish, then better follow the advice that will cater your aquarium fish needs. <bio>This content is provided by Low Jeremy.
People use scents and fragrances in many ways to create a pleasant odor. Because of the popularity of perfume among people, it is one of the favorite items usually given as a gift for special occasions or even for no occasion at all. Perfume may not be that cheap but it can definitely put a big smile to anyone's face who receives it as a present.

When you are actually buying perfume for a friend, lover, or a relative you need to have at least some idea of what exactly you are looking for. You have to consider the person's character and individuality. Knowing also his and her style and taste would help you select something that he or she would definitely like. Your choice should also reflect your relationship with the person. I don't believe that the type of perfume that you would be giving your mother or grandmother would also be the same kind that you will be giving a girlfriend.

You can actually select from six different categories of scents. The most popular and abundant kind in the market would be the floral scents. Most women like the smell of flowers on their skin. Another type of scent would be those containing extracts from lime, lemons, tangerine and mandarin. Citrus scents radiate a smell that is fresh and uplifting. Cyprus fragrances give off that earthy scent usually associated with pine. Oriental scents give off a feeling of warmth and is a mix of spices. Green fragrances are blends of leaves and herbs that exude a sporty feel most suited for day time wear. The last category which is the Fougere is a mix of fresh herbs and mossy ferns giving off a woody or herbaceous scent.

Your choice of scent should also be in parallel with the season. Spring calls for refreshing scents while summer may call for very cool fragrances. For winter, warm and intimate scents would be appropriate while autumn calls for light scents. Perfume for day wear is different from perfume for a night out.

You also need to consider how strong you want the perfume to be. You have eau de cologne which basically contains only 2-3% aromatic compounds, followed by eau de toilette with 5-20% aromatic compounds and eau de perfume with 10-30% aromatic compounds. The more aromatic compounds the perfume contains the longer it will last and the more expensive.

With all these in mind, you are well on your way to giving that perfect fragrance that will definitely brighten someone's day. <bio>Mary Lorainne writes about men Gifts Set and FragranceX free ,http://www.perfumefragrancecoupons.com </bio>

Acne is far from an uncommon ailment. Many of us struggle with this harmless, yet aggravating condition. Fallacies about acne are abundant, as well. Hopefully this article will help you sort out the fact from the fiction.

Fact: Acne is caused by oil secreted by the skin

Yes, it is true that one of the major components of acne is oil secreted by sebaceous glands, which are found in the skin of all mammals.

Fact: Acne is caused by blocked pores

Yes, dead skin cells and excessive oil secretions combine to block the pores in the skin. These blocked pores then begin to grow the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. The body may then have an allergic reaction to these bacteria. These factors combine to cause an inflammatory response by your body, which is what we call acne.

Fiction: Acne is caused is caused by improper hygiene

While it is true that acne is caused by blocked pores, better hygiene cannot prevent acne. All of the scrubbing in the world cannot unblock or prevent the blocking of pores, because the blockage is well below the surface of the skin.

Fiction: Acne is cause by diet

While acne is caused by excessive oil secretions, changing your diet to exclude oilier foods is not likely to help. These oil secretions are not diet related, but hormonally controlled.

Fact: Acne is related to hormones

The causes of acne are largely controlled by hormones, so acne is often triggered by hormonal changes, such as puberty. Hormonal changes and imbalances can cause the excessive oil secretions, and other factors that are related to the causes of acne.

Fact Acne may be caused by medications

Yes, there is evidence to show that Acne can be caused or triggered by certain medicines or chemicals, including Anabolic steroids, any medication that contains halogens, and exposure to high amounts of chlorine compounds. <bio>Get Acne skin care tips and more at http://www.acneskincareatoz.com </bio>

I studied natural systems and ecology at the University of Illinois and was involved then in the recycling movement that started the recycling movement in the United States, but my love was rivers. I've always been drawn to rivers and so I was finally able to start doing some projects with river restoration and saving endangered fish and that was fascinating work. It really taught me a lot about what's wrong with our river systems and the extent to which we pollute them and then the thing that wore on me about river restoration, I love rivers still, but really nobody wants to do it. Rivers are much more convenient if they run along property lines and don't take the natural meanders that they do and people like to forget that the entire flood plain is part of the river and then when the river does occupy its space these people become upset. So I get tired of the stress of somebody always being mad at me and I thought about what can I do where people want to help and want to work with me and I came on this water quality issue, just helping people have healthy water in their lives.

Kevin: When you were doing some of the river work, what were some of the things that you saw that you felt were threatening to our health?

Jim: Well, I will never forget. I was walking down the headwaters of the Makinaw River in central Illinois. I was working there as a project director for the Nature Conservancy and my daughter at the time was three or four years old at the most and I was holding her hand and we were walking down what would look like a ditch to anyone, but it was in fact, the start of the river and that far away, was a little agricultural town. A little farm town, maybe just 15 or 20 homes, 30 homes, something like that and out of this pipe protruding into the river and then downstream of the pipe there were actually wads of toilet paper.

Kevin: Oh, gosh.

Jim: Yeah, exactly and needless to say, I just saw this and I thought, what am I doing. I've got my baby here and I have no idea. It turns out that communities under a certain size are exempt from any of these Federal regulations.

Kevin: Really?

Jim: Yeah. So think about it. This is an old town, pre-septic system era. So the homes don't have septic systems and they just piped their waste to the river and there was a community pipe. It wasn't like every home had a pipe, but they just discharged it right into the river and it goes down stream to everyone else. That was new to me. I had never -- I was not aware of that.

Kevin: Wow.

Jim: There are thousands of these little communities around the country.

Kevin: They're all just pumping their waste just right into the rivers and water systems?

Jim: Yeah and then downstream people are swimming in the river, recreating. They may be pulling water out for drinking water. So that's very common. That was an "aha" moment and then I was supposed to be saving endangered species. Some of the species there in that river were mussels, a little mussel that lived in what had been those headwater swamps and stream and so the ditch commissioners clean out the river. They'll just take a backhoe and clean out the sediment and pile it up alongside the ditch, which is the river and so there's these dead mussels that I'm supposed to be saving in the pilings and I called one of the state agencies I worked with and asked them about it and they said, "Well, you really can't prove that those mussels were killed by that activity. They might have been there already." And I just thought, what am I doing again. Let's just tie one hand behind my back and then tell me I have to go out and save these things. For instance, the ditch commissioners were a group that was threatened, because they'd been doing this since their grandfathers had settled that land in central Illinois.

Kevin: Right.

Jim: So here I was for some little tiny mussel, clam, wanting them to modify their practices and people don't take well to change.

Kevin: Yeah.

Jim: I actually had a bomb threat against my house. My wife, my daughter and son and I went to this event at the school, the local school. It was packed. The audience was packed in around bleachers in the gymnasium and right around my family on any side of us, front, back and either side, there was eight feet of open space, so one guy told me that I might as well be from Mars.

Kevin: Really?

Jim: That's true. These people were just not ready.

Kevin: Wow. We talked about the sewage. Obviously, this goes down into our water system and our water supply. Let's get right into that and some of the other things that we should be concerned about getting into what we're drinking every day.

Jim: I think the biggest concern is chlorine. It's something people don't think about. Cities, municipal water managers tell you that your water is safe, it meets all EPA regulations, that chlorine is a disinfectant used to kill germs in water, but chlorine is relatively dangerous. It's been linked now, to bladder cancer in men. It's been linked to breast cancer in women. It's been linked to heart disease. So chlorination is important in terms of disease control. Think about it. Let's just take my example of the river a minute ago. Say there is human waste coming downstream and that can lead to the presence of disease organisms. So then you want to treat the water and that's what started chlorination. The first attempt, the first major city was Chicago and the whole incidence of typhoid went away.

Kevin: Really?

Jim: So basically what they're trying to do is sterilize that water, but it's only since the 90s that we've begun to learn about the byproducts of chlorine, trihalomethane, haloacidic acids and if you look at your water report, these will be listed always the levels of each of these. What happens is when chlorine interacts with organic material in water, it creates these carcinogenic compounds. Those can accumulate in the body and one of the things that's been found is that typically women with breast cancer have a higher incidence of these chlorinated compounds in their breast tissue. Organo-chlorines, they're called. I can't say that's by any means the only cause, but it's one of the major causes, so you shouldn't be drinking chlorinated water. Half or more of your chlorine consumption in a day comes in the shower, so chlorine in its natural form is a gas and so as the water comes into the shower it's vaporizing the chlorine. You're inhaling it and then you're also absorbing it in your skin and your pores are open. So the shower is just as dangerous a place to intake chlorine as drinking it.

Kevin: Wow. You don't even think about it.The gas part of it. The chlorine's on my body, but the fact that you're inhaling the gas is a lot more dangerous I would imagine.

Kevin: Wow. This is kind of off topic here, but is there anything in the works about something that will disinfect water like chlorine does without the side effects, like that?

Jim: Yeah, because of the regulations a number of cities have gone to chloramine, which is a combination of chlorine and ammonia and those were thought to be safer. It turns out they're just as bad or worse. A University of Illinois study has turned out a study on carcinogenic byproducts of chloramines.

Kevin: Okay.

Jim: So we still have that problem. Some cities use ozone. Ozone is better than chlorine, but you're talking about a transition. How do you transition all these water plants in the country to ozone? Ozone has a bromine byproduct. I haven't really heard a lot about any downside impacts of that, but I think the most promising is ultraviolet light and ultraviolet light there's only city in the country using it. It's a small city in Wisconsin. They don't use chlorine at all, except once or twice a year. They use chlorine to just sort of flush through their pipes. Ultraviolet light has no known side effects. It just destroys the DNA of anything passing by the light.

Kevin: That's great.

Jim: So UV light and filtration is a good alternative.

Kevin: What other things are we looking for in our water that we should be concerned about?

Jim: Well, along with the little example of the farm community dumping their human waste directly into the river, every city in the country now, is like that on a larger scale that are kind enough to remove the solids. They remove the paper products and the fecal material and they treat the water for bacteria. They're aerating it. They're putting it through a process to try to get it to digest some of the waste products. Then it goes in to the river. So everything that people consume ends up in that river. Big issues. Pharmaceuticals. I read about one just the other day that's used in the production of -- well, pesticides was one, but another more common -- oh, cleaners.

Kevin: Okay.

Jim: Also, cleaners and so the pharmaceuticals, hormones given to women as they age, the byproduct or this ingredient of household cleaners are affecting fish very directly. So downstream of any major city -- that's a pretty broad statement, but there are numerous examples where they've actually gone in and sampled downstream of Denver, Minneapolis, Boulder, Colorado, upstream of Washington, DC in the Potomac River they'll find male fish. First of all, you'll either find all female fish, or you'll find that the male fish are carrying eggs.

Kevin: Really?

Jim: So these are endocrine disruptors. Of course, the fish live in that water, so some scientists are quick to say there's no indication that could have a negative effect on humans, but that's nonsense. If it's having an impact on fish in these, albeit larger quantities, then as we consume that very same water one of my concerns with the EPA allowances of contaminants is that it's the low levels of contaminants that are creating the damage. For instance, one scientist at Berkley raised tadpoles. One tadpole was in water with one part per billion of atrozine. The other tadpoles were in water with more atrozine and some with no atrozine. It was the one with one part per billion of atrozine that had male and female sex organs. When there was more atrozine, that didn't happen and so I think what you're seeing is as the levels increase, it can actually trigger our immune system, whereas, its these low levels that can accumulate in the body and that can never trigger the immune system and that could be the key to this correlation with heart disease and breast cancer.<bio>Kevin Gianni the host of "Renegade Health Show" a fun and informative daily health show that is changing the perception of health across the world.
Water filtration is the process by which water for domestic use is cleaned and impurities removed. Filtration can be done at different stages of the water purification process depending on how much impurities are contained in the water. Home water filter systems could rage from simple physical barriers that are attached to the water faucets to complex processes that involve the use of chemicals and biological processes to filtrate the water.

Common Home Water Filters

The granular activated carbon filter is usually attached to domestic faucets and cleans the water by absorbing chlorine and chloramines from water. It also removes other contaminants, and also removes or reduces odor and bad tastes. Another common home water filtration system is the metallic alloy filter. They are also attached to domestic water outlets. They are made from copper-zinc alloy that react with chlorine present in water therefore filtering it.

Ceramic filters are another type of home filtration systems. They involve passing water through chambers whose outlet allows only water molecules to pass through. This kind of filters can only filter dirt, bacteria and debris but cannot filter chemical contaminants.

Installing Home Water Filtration Systems

There are two main ways of installing home water filtration systems. They can either be mounted on the faucet or the plumbing system. Mounting on the faucet is much easier and it costs less money. However, it requires constant filter cleaning and changing. Having a filter system installed in the plumbing is more expensive but it does not require much cleaning and maintenance.

Before deciding on what water filtration system to purchase for your home, it is advisable to have your water tested for impurities in order to determine which type of filtration system to purchase. According to the impurities contained in the water, consumers have the option of buying an in-line reverse-osmosis system or a carbon filter. Carbon filters are mainly used to filter water that contains organic chemicals, chlorine, pesticides or chloroform. Reverse-osmosis on the other hand is used to filter water that has organic contaminants, sodium, nitrates, ferrous iron, lead or fluoride.

Advantages of Home Water Filtration Systems

One of the main advantages of home water filtration systems is the fact that they enable users to have clean water for drinking. They can also be used to soften hard water that is used for laundry and other uses in the house. When laundry is done using soft water, it leaves the washing much softer and less detergent is used.

Most home water filtration systems come with a meter that indicates when the user needs to change the filter. This ensures that they do not drink unfiltered water because there is no chance of forgetting to replace the filter. Another advantage is the cost effectiveness of home water filtration systems. After installation, not much maintenance and upgrading is required. Users may however need to change the filter once in a while.

Using water filtration systems also saves the user money in terms of medical bills. Drinking unfiltered water is mainly associated with certain diseases. With the use of water filtration systems, people are assured of a happy life and healthy lifestyles.

Water filters are specialized sieves used to ensure that water is clean and safe for drinking. With water being vital to the survival of humanity, the use of water filtration systems is of great importance. Unfiltered water carries with it sediment and microorganisms that may be harmful to ones health. This makes the addition of a filtration system in the home of great value.

There are different types of water filters available commercially that intend to serve the same purpose - making water safe for use. These filters use various processes such as distillation, reverse osmosis and carbon bonding.

The distillation process involves boiling the impure water until it vaporizes leaving any particles in it behind. The vapor then passes through a device that cools it back to liquid form. This process, tested in laboratories using an apparatus known as a distillation tank, has proven quite effective.

Reverse osmosis is a more complicated process. The water molecules, which are under great pressure force their way through a thin film or membrane. The membrane blocks substances in the water from seeping through. Reverse osmosis has proven effective in removing heavy metals such as lead and aluminum from water as well as microorganisms like bacteria and viruses.

Systems that use carbon in the filtration process work through adsorption. The carbon filtration process is composed of two distinct procedures, chemical bonding and mechanical straining.

In Chemical Bonding, an activated piece of black charcoal, which is hydrophorbic, is used. The black charcoal has an electro-positive charge that makes it a more attractive bonding agent to chemicals and other impurities. As water forces its way through the carbon, it passes slowly to allow sufficient contact time. This enables sediment in the water to attach to the carbon.

The second method of water purification using carbon is mechanical straining; carbon compressed into a solid block is used. Water molecules strain through the carbon blocks microscopic pores and effectively eliminate any particles. This method is more effective in removing a larger number of contaminants than chemical bonding because it has larger surface area of carbon.

The degree of effectiveness will depend on the flow rate of water and the contact time with the carbon. If the flow rate is too high, the filtration could have zero efficiency. These carbon filtration methods are more efficient in removing sediment, chlorine, and organic compounds from water. They are not as effective in removing dissolved inorganic compounds, minerals or salts.

These filtration systems have all proven to eliminate harmful organisms from water to a certain extent. Although water filter manufacturers claim that their products eliminate all impurities in water, the truth is that no filter is 100 percent effective. Human error as well as malfunction of the filtration system is possible.

When purchasing water filters, it is important to take note of the filtration process they use. Most people prefer those that incorporate distillation while others prefer a combination of several processes. Water filters are effective means of purifying water.<bio>We carry a full selection of water filters and reverse osmosis systems.</bio>

It might not have been the newest car on the block, but it was going to be the best.

You took it home and washed it, polished it and took the vacuum cleaner outside to make sure it was totally spotless, every week!

As a teenager, living at home, with brothers and sisters, the car is your space. Your friends judge you by your car and how smart it looks. Your car gives you the chance of privacy that you never get at home. The opportunity to take your girlfriend somewhere quiet, maybe, or just the chance to go off on your own and enjoy the sea view, maybe do a bit of fishing.

That was just the outside. Remember tweaking the engine, changing the brake fluid, and fitting a spoiler?
The drinking water that enters our home can contain as many as 2000 contaminants and impurities. Water companies treat the water with chlorine that kill some pollutants but leaves the water containing chlorine which is known to be an extremely harmful substance. In order to make the water safe for us and our families to drink, a drinking water filter system is an essential household item.

Very few people are lucky enough to have a supply of natural, pure and clean water to our homes which in its purest form contains many minerals that are beneficial to our health.

We rely on the water companies to treat the water in order eliminate some of the contaminants it may well contain. The water is treated using chlorine at the water treatment plant so that any small organisms and bacteria can be killed off, and then it is sent through a water filter system to remove any particles.

Unfortunately the public water purification system is not enough to eliminate the majority of impurities that find their way into our homes via the faucet which is why a home drinking water filter system is necessary.

Apart from the chlorine introduced by the water company, a recent study revealed that over 2000 chemicals have been found in drinking water that has not been through some sort of home drinking water filter system. Metals, bacteria and other living organisms along with various types of sediments have also been found in the general water supply.

There are different methods used in a home water purification system, but the first step is to decide how much and where you wish the water to be delivered.

Water Jug

The simplest and smallest of the systems we are discussing in this article. It does not cost much and does not require any installation. It will supply you with a small amount of pure drinking water after being passed through a carbon filter. Each jug can hold between 2 and 3 liters.

Point Of Use Filters (Under the Sink or Counter Top)

These are slightly more expensive than the water jugs and you need to attach these to the faucet on the sink in your home. If you place one in the kitchen then this will be the only one which is supplied with filtered water. But like with the water jugs the carbon filter contained in this system will need to be replaced periodically.

Point of Entry System (Whole House Filters)

Of all the systems this is the most expensive but is the most comprehensive and efficient of them all. The carbon filter through which water will pass into your home is attached to the mains water supply along with a number of other sophisticated filters.

So what this means is that no matter which faucet you turn on you will be supplied with filtered clean water that you can drink. Even the water in your toilet will have passed through this system.

One more advantage to be had from installing this drinking water filter system is that the water supplied into your home is much softer. This means that the buildup of lime scale in the pipes etc. is much less and so the chances of them becoming corroded or damaged is reduced.

So not only will your family be thanking you for giving them great water, but it will increase the lifespan of appliances in your home that need it as well.<bio>To learn more about home water purifiers visit http://safeclearwater.com.
If you are asking yourself this question, you are not alone. Many people are not well informed about the advantages of owning a water filter, nor do they understand that can arise as a result of not owning a water filter. A water filter can greatly improve the quality and taste of the water that you consume, along with the overall health of you and your family. Upon initial exposure, a water filter may seem like an expensive investment, but the benefits it provides pays for the actual cost many times over.

Everyone can benefit from owning a water filter. The optimal set up is owning a filter that purifies water that is consumed, along with water that is used for showering and laundry. This can be accomplished through the use of separate water filters, or a single whole house water filter. If you plan on purchasing separate water filters, the first decision to make is what kind of filter you will use to purify the water that you drink.

The most popular filters for this task are refrigerator water filters, undersink filters and countertop water filters. A refrigerator water filter attaches to the inside of a refrigerator door, and dispenses clean and cold drinking water. An undersink water filter purifies water before it is dispensed from a faucet. Although more expensive, a countertop water filter is an attractive and practical water filter choice. Any of these filters eliminate VOCs, chlorine and other impurities from drinking water. It is also useful to invest in a shower water filter. A shower water filter eliminates chlorine and other impurities that can cause hair thinning or skin irritation after repeated exposure during showers.

If you are looking for one filter to provide filtered water throughout your home, office or apartment, a whole house water filter may be the answer. A whole house water filter attaches to the main water source, and provides purified water from the sink, shower and washing machine. A whole house water filter removes the same impurities as other water filters, including chlorine, lime, lead and VOCs. All types of water filters use carbon as their main filtering component. Because of its porous nature, carbon has the ability to filter out large and small particles and impurities.

Carbon also does not interfere with minerals found in tap water that are actually beneficial to a healthy body. A whole house water filter requires more installation time and a higher initial investment, but actually evens out over the course of time. A whole house water filter normally lasts between thirty and sixty thousand gallons. When it comes to making a decision about water filters, it really all depends on what you need and desire from your home water filter system. <bio>For more information about house water filters please visit http://WaterFilters.Blueble.com and buy water filters online. </bio>

Ask any doctor and he or she will tell you that most Americans simply don't drink enough water. Getting an adequate amount of water every day is paramount to staying hydrated and keeping your body the healthiest it can be; your organs need water to do their jobs optimally, but have you ever thought about not only the amount of water you drink, but also the quality of that water?

Not only should be drinking a lot of water every day, but that water should be pure, clean, clear, and safe. If you are drinking water that comes out of your faucet or comes in a little plastic bottle from your grocery store shelf, chances are very high that the water you are putting into your body is full of contaminants. The best way to ensure that you are getting that delicious and healthy water into your system is to get one of the drinking water purification systems that are currently available.

What should you look for when deciding which unit to get?

Well, the most important thing is the quality of the filtration, of course. Filtering out all the bad stuff is the whole point. When doing your research, look for a system that removes chlorine. Yes, most municipal water suppliers use chlorine as a way to "clean" your tap water, but chlorine can be harmful to your health, and besides that it smells funny and tastes bad. You also want to get rid of THMs, which are cancer-causing byproducts that result from adding chlorine to water.

In addition, MTBE is being discovered in water supplies all over the nation, as is lead. Yes, lead. If you try to sell your house and it is even possible that someone might have used lead paint on the walls at some time in the past, you are required to tell the home buyer; yet, the government allows lead to remain in the water we drink, use for bathing, and steam our broccoli with?

There are also organisms in a lot of our country's water; biological agents like giardia and cryptosporidium cause intestinal disorders that are so nasty that most communities require your doctor to report all cases to the local health department and/or Center for Disease Control. Get a water purification system that removes these harmful substances without removing the minerals we need like calcium and potassium.

You also should look for a good guarantee, preferably a lifetime warranty. Not all companies have a warranty, and you should be leery if the manufacturer does not offer one. Let's face it, in this day and age, cost is also a factor.

You should steer clear of the very expensive reverse osmosis units; hardly anyone needs those and they are better at getting rid of dirt than chemicals. Also avoid the ones that seem to be very inexpensive, as they probably do not the job as well as you would like them to.

As with any purchase, you should pay attention to the kind of customer service you are likely to get as well. When comparison-shopping online, look for customer service information, and choose a company with a solid reputation for helping people as well as providing a quality product.

Once you have made the decision to bathe in, drink, and cook with the best water you can get, you will no doubt decide that one of the top-notch drinking water purification systems is the smart move for you and your loved ones.<bio>Continue researching the benefits of drinking water purification systems by visiting http://safeclearwater.com today.Tyler Waterman is a health enthusiast and enjoys sharing his experience and research with others on the internet.
Some general tips on swimming pool cleaners and maintenance. It is very important that you take good care of your swimming pool, naturally you should make sure that the water are safe, and match the level of maintenance to the level of usage, since there is little chance you could predict your pool use it is recommended that you do this regularly. You will want to test the swimming pool water in the evening. Check the water before you add any kind of chemicals to the pool's water. Once tested you should also test the water in the morning, before anyone uses the pool -- so you know that the water quality is good for the days activities. A PH level of 7.5 is probably best, that is considered to be the ideal level for swimming pool water.

Test the swimming pool water according to usage, if you use the pool every few days there is no reason for daily checks, just before you intend on using it. At some seasons the swimming pool is used more than at other seasons so make sure you adjust your pool cleaning and maintenance to the seasons and your pool usage. Make sure you check the pool in advance to ensure a safe and enjoyable pool. Check signs of poor water quality, in general swimming pool water should be clear and bleu, anything that is not blue and clear is a cause for concern and you should simply take a close look at the water to make sure there is no algae growth or cloudiness.

Pay attention to the weather, different weather conditions have a significant effect on the water quality and the pool cleanness. The weather conditions effect the swimming pool water quality too, strong sun reduces amounts of chlorine and rainy seasons may increase water lever or introduce parasites to the pool. You should consider checking the water at the return flow of water to the pool, check and add any chemicals to ensure that there is effective mixing with filtered water. Regularly clean the pool surfaces including the waterline to ensure that build up of sun-oils, body fats, algae, airborne pollution and other dirt is not left to build up. Pool surround paving slabs should be cleaned with a strong Chlorine solution, brushed away from the pool.

While pool cleaning and pool maintenance is something that seems to be simple and not complicated it is highly recommended that you study the manufactures instructions, and that you consult the manual whenever faced with problems, you can also call and ask the company for advice or consult a local swimming pool maintenance professional. Chemical agents need to be mixed with the pool's water, it is strongly recommended that you read instructions carefully and make sure you mix the right amounts, be careful and use caution when dealing with chemicals, use gloves and do not inhale fumes. The pool cleaning products and chemicals should be kept away from the reach of children always, and when disposed off it should be done by a responsible adult.

If you follow all the instructions and common sense there is no reason that you will not enjoy a nice and clean swimming pool at all seasons, it is always better to know that its highly maintained and cleaned when you jump into the cool water of your swimming pool.

Avoid smoking or lighting fire close to chemicals, and keep the chemicals in a safe location, as far as possible from barbeque grills, fireplaces etc. after handling pool cleaning products wash hands thoroughly.

Swimming Pool Cleaners Advice - If chemicals get into any contact with skin or inhaled, call a poison center, and make sure you can provide all the details of the chemicals used (find the container and keep it with you). To ensure that your pool water are clean run these tests on a daily basis, PH and Chlorine levels using a test kit. Ensure pH is within the 7.2 - 7.6 range. The pool filter should run at least 8 to 10 hours per day (24 hours per day is best). Set your pool timer or remember to run the pool manually if you don't have a timer. If you are not running your pool 24 hours per day, it is best to have it running during the daylight hours (instead of night).Make sure your skimmer baskets are empty and clear of leaves or other debris. Chlorine must be added to the pool daily by dissolving chlorine tablets in the skimmers once per week or use an automatic chlorinator. Make sure the unit is full and that the dial is set to a level that gives you a good daily chlorine reading depending on how long you run your system.
Bottled drinking water is pure, right? Not necessarily. Bottled water can be less pure than municipal tap water in some parts of the United States. In fact, bottled water can actually be municipal tap water. Two examples are Coca Cola's Dasani brand and Pepsi Cola's Aquafina brand.

What is bottled water?

"Description. Bottled water is water that is intended for human consumption and that is sealed in bottles or other containers with no added ingredients except that it may optionally contain safe and suitable antimicrobial agents. Fluoride may be optionally added within the limitations established." The United States FDA

Who regulates what bottled water has in it?

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates bottled drinking water, which is classified as a "food". The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates tap water. Amazingly, the EPA guidelines for municipal water are stricter than the FDA restrictions for bottled drinking water! You might buy bottled drinking water that is acceptable to the FDA but is not acceptable for use as ordinary bathroom tap water.

The FDA's specific regulations for bottled water are found in Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR).

What are FDA standards?

Under the standard of quality (21 CFR, 165.110[b]), FDA allows certain levels of contaminants in bottled water.

Contaminants bottled water has in it.

1. Coliform. Coliform are rod-shaped bacteria, such as E. coli, that are normally present in the human intestine. The FDA says that bottled water may have up to 9.2 coliform organisms per 100 milliliters. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

2. Arsenic. Arsenic is a poison. The FDA says that bottled water may have up to 0.05 milligrams per liter of arsenic. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

3. Chloride. Chloride is a compound of chlorine, a substance used to disinfect tap water. The FDA allows up to 250.0 milligrams per liter of chloride in bottled water. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

4. Iron. Iron is a metallic element. Your body needs some iron, but not too much. The FDA permits bottled water to contain up to 0.3 milligrams per liter of iron. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

5. Manganese. Manganese resembles iron and is used in fertilizers. Bottled water may contain up to 0.05 milligrams per liter of manganese. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

6. Phenols. Phenols are corrosive, poisonous acidic compounds. Your bottled water may contain up to 0.001 milligrams per liter of phenols. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

7. Dissolved solids. "Dissolved solids" is a catch-all phrase. The FDA allows bottled water to contain up to 500 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, of whatever type. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

8. Zinc. Zinc is a metallic element. Your body needs some zinc, but not too much. The FDA permits bottled water to contain up to 5.0 milligrams per liter of zinc. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

9. Fluoride. Fluoride is purposely added to some bottled water. If so, the label should say so. In addition, bottled water that is not labeled as containing fluoride may contain up to 2.4 milligrams per liter of fluoride. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Chemical contaminants bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows set levels of the following chemical contaminants in all bottled water. Amounts vary, but some are shocking, such as Barium. FDA regulations permit up to 2.0 milligrams per liter of barium. That is nearly the same as natural fluorides, even though barium is a toxic metallic element. Cyanide, another poison, is permitted in bottled water. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Here is a sampling of chemical contaminants bottled water has in it, along with the permitted milligrams per liter.

* Barium.................................... 2.0 * Chromium.................................. 0.1 * Copper.................................... 1.0 * Cyanide................................... 0.2 * Nickel.................................... 0.1 * Ethylbenzene (100-41-4)................... 0.7 * Monochlorobenzene (108-90-7).............. 0.1 * Styrene (100-42-5)........................ 0.1 * Toluene (108-88-3)........................ 1.0 * Xylenes (1330-20-7)....................... 10.0

Pesticides bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows set levels of pesticides in bottled water. There are set limits for each of 29 different pesticides. People who purchase bottled water believe, normally, that they are avoiding pesticides by doing so. For a listing of these pesticides, see 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Disinfectants bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows bottled water to contain set levels of residual disinfectants and disinfection byproducts. Examples from 21 CFR 165.110[b]:

* Disinfection byproducts

................... Bromate................................. 0.010 Chlorite................................ 1.0 Haloacetic acids (five) (HAA5).......... 0.060 Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM)............ 0.080 * Residual disinfectants

................... Chloramine.............................. 4.0 (as Cl2) Chlorine................................ 4.0 (as Cl2) Chlorine dioxide........................ 0.8 (as ClO2)

Radioactive materials bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows bottled water to contain set levels of radioactive material. See 21 CFR 165.110[b]. Three examples:

* "The bottled water shall not contain a combined radium-226 and radium-228 activity in excess of 5 picocuries per liter of water."

* "The bottled water shall not contain a gross alpha particle activity in excess of 15 picocuries per liter of water."

* "The bottled water shall not contain uranium in excess of 30 micrograms per liter of water."

Bottled water has in it more than regulations allow.

When bottled water does not meet the standards set out by the FDA, it might still be sold. By law, it should bear a suitable label.

Examples:

1. "Contains Excessive Bacteria"

2. "Contains Excessive Arsenic"

3. "Excessively Radioactive"

What You Can Do

* Take time to know what bottled water has in it. * Look for bottlers' web sites and compare information. * Write to bottlers with specific questions. * Remember that bottled water does not mean absolute purity. * Be sure yours is healthy drinking water. <bio>=A9 2007, Anna Hart.
