Surprisingly enough, even in today's age of video games and "instant gratification" entertainment, board games are still wildly popular. And many would suggest that chess reigns supreme as one of the world's most popular board games, both in the U.S. and around the world.

Because of that, chess sets, chess pieces and related items still continue to be popular gifts. If you're in the market for a complete chess set, including both the pieces and a matching board, you'll find many suppliers online that provide you with chess set combinations that are already properly matched. But if you need a new chess board to go with an existing set of pieces, or you're looking for a set of pieces to play on an existing chess board, then it helps to know how to choose the right size product before you make your purchase.

Scenario #1: You Already Have Chess Pieces and Need a Chess Board to Match

As you shop around for chess boards online, you'll notice that most websites list the dimensions of the entire board as well as the size of the squares that the pieces sit on. The size of the board is somewhat important, but more from a standpoint of where you'll be placing the board (e.g., on a coffee table, in an office, etc). The more important factor for choosing the right board to match with your chess pieces is the size of the squares. First, you'll need to know the size of the base of the king. Then take that number and multiply it by 4/3 (or 1.33). That will tell you the MINIMUM sized squares you should look for when picking out your new chess board. Okay, at the risk of doing math in public, a quick example:

- Base of the King: 1.5"

- Minimum square size: 1.5" x 1.33 = 1.995"

In this example, a board with 2-inch squares or larger would be just fine. However, you don't want to go smaller since you run the risk of the pieces being too close together on the board, making them hard to move without bumping against each other. In addition, a board with squares that are way too large would just look out of proportion.

Scenario #2: You Already Have a Chess Board and Need Chess Pieces to Match

Of course, the other option is that you already have a chess board and simply need to find the right chess pieces to match. In this case, the procedure is just the opposite as above. You will need to know the size of the squares on your board. Then, simply take that number and multiply it by 3/4 (or 0.75). That will tell you the LARGEST measurement you would want in terms of the base of the king. Again, a quick example:

- Size of the squares on your board: 2.5"

- Maximum size of the base of the king: 2.5" x 0.75 = 1.875"

In this case, pieces with a base of 1.75" or even 1.5" would be appropriate, but obviously that great looking set of pieces with the 2-inch base might be pushing it a bit.

By following those simple tips, you'll see that finding the right size chess pieces or chess board is quick and easy. And wouldn't your math teacher be proud? <bio>Looking for a new chess board, chess pieces or chess set?
When you think of a chess set, chances are you think of an old wooden board with plain pieces that those strange guys in college played with into the wee hours of the morning. And while there can be no argument that chess is certainly a great way to pass the time, there is a use for chess that you may not have thought of - decorating.

But why would you want to decorate a room with a game? Well, chances are you won't be basing the entire room design around the set, but you should consider adding a decorative set to accent your current design. It's time to let go of the notion of chess being simply a game, and start thinking of it as a decorating tool.

Of course, you can't really justify decorating with an old musty board and cheap wooden pieces, can you? This is where you need to start thinking of a chess set as décor and not a hobby - a nice chess board and pieces (and possibly table) are going to run you a good bit of cash, and thinking of it as a hobby or game is going to make it that much more difficult to buy. But, if you start to consider it as an ornamental piece, then it becomes much more justifiable. After all, how much will you spend on a custom framed picture, or an ornate coffee table? They both qualify as decorations, but consider that nearly everyone has these - how many times have you seen an intricately carved chess set in someone's house?

The benefits of having a chess set as a decoration are numerous. It can instantly add a touch of class and sophistication to your room. Most people think of intelligence and refinement when they think of a nice looking marble chess set. It also provides a great conversation starter, since most people won't be used to seeing a hand crafted chess table with carved pieces. And finally, consider passing on an antique chess set as an heirloom to your children - a well made set will last many, many years.

So the next time you redo a room, consider adding a decorative chess set and table as one of your pieces. You'll add an instant conversation piece, and your room will look more refined and classy no matter what your decorating scheme. <bio>Adrian is the webmaster of http://www.decorative-chess-sets.com, an online store with hundreds of decorative and unique chess sets, boards, pieces and tables. </bio>

For many people it is very difficult for them to know what kind of chess set they want to buy especially if they have never purchased one before. However, hopefully the tips that are provided below will help you find the chess set that you want and enjoy.

1. Let's look at the match board and pieces. Not only is it important to have a well made chess board but the chess pieces themselves should also be well made. Certainly the variety of chess pieces available is enormous and you could just about pretty much well have want you want, but always remember that the board and the pieces should be of the same quality. Always look for chess pieces that will match the chess board and never buy pieces that are too big for a small board or vice versa.

If you are unsure about what style of chess board and chess pieces go together then you can always look at purchasing a board which already has pieces specifically made to complement that particular board.

2. Look at what you can afford. Often people will look for the cheapest product available and purchase it. Yet this is something you should never do when looking for a chess set, but you can of course look for a bargain. Just ensure that what you are buying is good quality.

Many people will purchase a good quality chess set rather than something a little cheaper as they will be passing it down from generation to generation and will want to know that it is going to last.

Also by purchasing a higher quality specification set you will soon find that you enjoy the game more. Certainly you will soon notice the difference of playing with a finely crafted chess board and chess pieces, which will last you a life time.

3. Another important thing to consider when looking at purchasing a chess set is what kind you want. Where will it be stored? If for example you are looking to purchase one that will be constantly on show then ensure that the wood matches well. Also how often will you be playing with the chess set? If you are someone who will be playing on a daily basis then it is important that you look for a set that is durable and can take the constant use. Yet if you want a chess set to complement a table or a room then why not consider purchasing one of the more unique sets that available (based on say characters from The Lord of The Rings). However, if you will only be using the chess set when traveling then it may be wise just to invest in a small traveling set. At all times it is important that you remember what exactly the chess set will be for prior to making any purchase.

By following these three simple steps and also relying on your own personal taste hopefully you will find the chess set that will not only suit your playing needs but will be a joy for the rest of your life. <bio>Lee Dobbins writes for http://chess-moves.info where you can learn more about playing chess, chess sets and accessories. </bio>

My father was one of my favorite people in all of the world. I have so many great memories of times with him and I loved having him as a father. He was never too busy with work to play with me and my siblings, and he always took time off for a family vacation each summer. He would come home after work each night and spend at least an hour playing with all of us outside. If we were building a fort, he would join us. If we wanted to practice basketball or baseball, he would change his clothes and quickly become our coach. As we got older my dad made himself available for talks about life and for teaching me about being an adult. One of my most distinct memories of my father, however, is how much he loved his chess board.

Apparently, my dad grew up playing chess with his dad and his brothers, so he loved the game from the time of his youth. My mother told me that when they got married, my dad's only request was that he get to place his lucky chess board in their house and that she would allow him to teach her the game. It gave him great joy to use his chess board and to teach his wife and eventually their children how to play the game.

I have many memories of afternoons spent in my dad's den trying to learn the game of chess on his special chess board. He would sit patiently for as long as I would listen to him talk about the rules and give me pointers on my strategies. I was never very good at chess, and I am still no expert, but I remember that I learned to love chess as much as my dad did simply because he was my hero and it was something he loved.

When my dad passed away not too long ago, I was more than happy when my siblings decided that I should keep dad's chess board in my house. None of my siblings had enjoyed the game as much as I had, so I was so grateful for their generosity in giving me the chess board that symbolized so much about my father and about our relationship.

I don't use the chess board to play chess anymore. In fact, it is used as my nightstand by my bed. I use it to hold a lamp, whatever books I am reading, and a photograph of me and my dad when I was young. I love that chess board so much. As a parent, I can only hope that I am building a strong legacy like the one my dad left from his life. I am looking for ways to spend special time with each of my children just like my dad looked for time to teach me chess on his special chess board. <bio>Analeese Burnabaker loves her dad's chess board more than any other item in her home. As a counselor, she encourages people to maintain strong relationships with their parents and to cherish memories of their childhood years.
While traditional chess remains most popular around the world, there are variants of the game which are interesting to compare. Similar to orthodox chess, as it's sometimes called, these chess variants all use a chess board and a chess set, are thematically based on a military battle, and primarily work to protect the king (and to win, capture the opponent's).

Orthodox Chess

With traditional chess, two players square off opposite a checkered chess board comprised of 64 squares: 8 columns by 8 rows, with the squares alternating between white and black. Onto this board, a chess set is broken out with each player given 16 chess pieces: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 bishops, 2 knights, 2 rooks, and 8 pawns. With these pieces, the players are charged with devising a strategy to capture the opposing king.

Players alternate turns and captured pieces are replaced by the attacking piece. The queen is the most powerful chess piece, while the king gains strength as the game progresses on and the chess board thins out. The game ends once a player is able to establish checkmate.

Xiangqi

Also known as Chinese Chess, Xiangqi is quite popular in Asia. As with traditional chess, Xiangqi is said to have evolved from the Indian game Chanturanga. The chess board for Xiangqi is imagined to be a battlefield divided by a river. On each side of this river, there's a palace and like chess, the objective of each player is to capture (or check) the opposing king.

Comprised of 10 horizontal lines and nine vertical lines, a void dissects the chess board. On one side is the black army and on the other, the red. In total, there are 64 squares. However, play takes place on points instead of the squares. At the start of the game, each player is given a chess set (or Xiangqi set) of 16 pieces: 1 king, 2 Mandarins, 2 elephants, 2 knights, 2 rooks, 2 cannons, and 5 pawns.

Shogi

In Japan, the game of Shogi rules and though there are departures in the game from orthodox chess, there are also similarities. Known as the "general's game," Shogi is another military-themed board game that again aims to checkmate the opposing player's king.

The chess sets or playing pieces for Shogi include: 1 king, 1 rook, 1 bishop, 2 gold generals, 2 silver generals, 2 knights, 2 lances, and 9 pawns. As with chess, each piece is limited by specific movement on the board. A unique element to Shogi is the "promotion zone," where pieces can be promoted (similar to the last rank on a traditional chess board for a pawn). In Shogi, promoted pieces are flipped to indicate the change in rank/power. Pieces can also return to the board after capture.

Other Chess Variants

In addition to the above games (highlighted because of their history), there are dozens more to learn of. As said, each variant possesses enough similarities with traditional chess to make for interesting discussion. To master one of these variants is also to perhaps better understand classic chess.

From Alice Chess, which is played on two chess boards, to Displacement Chess, where certain chess pieces are transposed, several chess variants seem to want to challenge the old guard. Yet by doing so, they aim to further understand it. By testing the game's limits, they just might unearth some of the game's remaining mysteries.

Time to break out the chess sets and deploy.<bio>Roger is the resident chess expert for PMP Chess, where he'll help you pick out the perfect chess set.
Owning your own chess set comes along with many benefits that you may not even be aware of. The fact of the matter is that chess sets have a lot to offer the user. Even if you do not like to play the game of chess on a regular basis, you may find out that a high quality chess set is something that fits in nicely with your overall life style. But before you buy a chess set, take the time to look at what is available and what you are actually buying for the money.

Obviously, the number one reason to buy a chess set is if you like to play the game. After all, if you do not have a chess set you will never be able to hone your skills and experience the exhilaration of a long, strategic game. Believe it or not, chess sets are not quite as expensive as you may think. Many people are under this impression, and it in turn scares them away from making a purchase. But if you search around there is no reason that you should not be able to find a chess set that suits your needs.

Have you ever thought about buying a chess set as a simple decoration? There are many people who do this, and it can be a great addition to any room of your home. Chances are that you have probably been to a home where a chess set is the centerpiece of a coffee table or dining room. And guess what? A lot of the people who use a chess set as a decoration have never even played the game before. They simply like the way that it looks, and/or the way that it makes them appear to guests.

Finally, since chess sets come in so many different varieties finding one that matches your home is never a difficult task. The most common are the basic wood or metal sets, but the options do not end there. You can also find themed sets, or ones that are of higher quality such as marble or maple.

Not only can you buy a chess set for yourself, but these can make for great gifts as well. If you have a friend or a player in the family, buying them a quality chess set will set their world on fire!

As you can see, chess sets have a lot to offer. If you have never looked into what they have to offer you should do so today. <bio>Kevin Hall is a contributing author for http://www.braroechess.com.
It can be a real challenge shopping for a loved one when it's time to find that perfect gift and shopping for the perfect chess gift is no different. In fact, if you don't know much about chess or what to buy, it can be that much harder. But there are plenty of popular gift ideas you should be aware of so if you're stuck trying to figure out what would make the right chess gift, hopefully this will give you at least one good idea.

Of course, we already know that a lot of players would rather have a traditional looking Staunton chess set. There's just something about that classic style that many chess players love. But there are plenty of other chess players looking for something more unique. For this group of players, an alabaster chess set makes a great option as a possible "top pick" on your gift shopping list. Regardless of where you shop, there are probably several styles to choose from so it should be pretty easy to find the one that's the right match for the lucky recipient of this set.

Alabaster is a type of stone and is quite a popular material used in many different products including chess sets and boards. When it comes to chess sets and the merchants that sell them, you'll typically find that alabaster sets are made in Italy, which is one of the world's largest suppliers of alabaster products. This popular material is used all over the world as accents to high-end buildings on one end of the spectrum and to create figurines and other ornaments at the other end of the spectrum.

Since it's a soft material (compared to other types of stone), it can be worked into unique and creative designs, making it perfect for a wide variety of applications including making chess pieces. And since alabaster is available in a range of colors and has such an elegant look, many people use these sets as decorative pieces rather than storing them away when not being played. Tehy can be a great addition to your home or office.

You can find alabaster sets in several colors including black, brown, white, blue, green, red and more. You'll typically find several combinations of these colors making up the opposing teams of chess men. Most of the time, the pieces will be around 3 inches in height, which is a good size for this type of chess set. In addition, since alabaster can be an expensive material to use, that size also helps keep the cost down, as opposed to having larger (and more costly) pieces.

Since the pieces are so stunning in their design, the boards typically used with an alabaster set have to be equally well-made so you'll usually find that they're also made from alabaster with a few options to choose from. Sometimes the board with just be a plain board with no border. Other options might include the same type of board with a nicely made inlaid border. And finally, the top of the line combinations will include an alabaster board with built-in storage for your pieces. This is important since alabaster can be easily damaged. In fact, if you don't get a board with built-in storage, it's important to also purchase a storage box to keep those pieces safe when not being used.

For the chess player who's looking for a unique looking chess set that's sure to catch people's eye, you can't go wrong with an alabaster chess set as a great chess gift. <bio>Looking for a new chess set?
For many people they find the tactics and strategy of chess play very complicated, even computers are unable to work out the best strategy against every situation in a game of chess. As there are literally millions of different possibilities involved in each game of chess it is impossible for us to evaluate them all.

Over the years chess strategy has gradually been getting more advanced and the Chess Masters who write books about their various strategies will eventually influence the next generation of chess players to come along. It also means that being able to observe a particular player's strategy can often make it easier for other players to work out how to beat them, despite them not knowing much about the game of chess itself.

Whilst the more advanced chess play strategies and tactics can take some one years even a life time to learn and in fact you will soon discover it is pretty much impossible to learn everything about the game of chess. However, below are 2 of the more basic moves which should help get you started.

Generally the most common move made in any game of chess is to ensure that you pin the other player's pieces. What we mean by pinning is that you use one of your pieces to stop your opponent from one of theirs and thus allowing you to take one of their more important pieces such as the Rook or Queen. Certainly a more skilled chess player will be able to easily stop you from moving anywhere and thus controlling not only their side of the board but yours as well.

Then there is the skewer move which is very similar to the pin move, but only the other way around. So the more important piece (Rook or Queen) is at the front and the less important one is behind. Although it looks as though you are moving your most important piece into the line of fire you have actually in reality got it covered. Thus if your opponent decides to take your important piece they will then leave their most important piece open to be taken by your less important one. Because of this your opponent will be forced to move their more important piece out of the line of fine and leaving their weaker ones that are behind open to attack. <bio>Lee Dobbins writes for http://chess-moves.info where you can learn more about chess and see diagrams of chess moves. </bio>

Chess is one of the oldest board games known to man, and the chess pieces used are as distinctive as any game pieces you'll ever see. Even people who have never played the game recognize a set of chess pieces immediately. Once simply functional, today's chess men are works of art that many serious players collect for their beauty as well as their utilitarian purpose.

Choice of Chessmen Reflects Other Interests

In fact, collecting chess pieces has spilled over to collectors of many other kinds. Chess players can now combine their interest in history, science fiction or rare woods and carvings with their passion for chess. The reason? The beautifully designed and carved chess pieces that are central to the game are now offered in styles to reflect every taste and interest.

If you are a Civil War history buff, a chess set with Civil War figures can bring an extra bit of excitement as you and your opponent pit North against South once again. Other history fans will appreciate a chess match-up between Greeks and Romans or medieval troops.

Or perhaps fantasy chess pieces are more your style, with one side's knights pitted against the other sides dragons. Wizards, peasants and fair damsels can all bring a touch of magic to the chess board. Are you an animal lover? There are even chess sets featuring cats and dogs -- the perfect chess set for the chess playing veterinarian or animal lover.

An Amazing Array of Materials

Your first chess pieces were probably those red and black plastic ones that come in cheap boxed chess boards (along with checkers) that most beginners learn on. You're well past that stage now, and you deserve something finer. The materials that are used for chess pieces are almost limitless.

The most popular is wood, but that's a broad category encompassing such fine-grained woods as rosewood, maple and ebony. Each of these woods can be stained in various rich, lustrous finishes that make each piece from rook to king a tiny example of the woodworker's art.

Other materials that demonstrate your exquisite taste are alabaster, brass and marble resins. These wonderful chess pieces have one-of-a-kind detailing that you will appreciate every time you use them or leave them out for display in your home. Marble resins are especially attractive because they can be hand-carved into beautifully rendered figures, and then stained in full color for amazing historical accuracy for historically themed chess sets.

With so many gorgeous chess pieces available, is it any wonder that more people every year decide to have several sets? Consider having a set for everyday play, a set for those special occasions and others simply for display. It's an affordable, functional form of art that has a long and illustrious history as the game of kings. <bio>Kevin Hall works for BraRoe Chess.
The are so many chess sets on the market today that it can be very confusing when you are trying to buy one. Chess sets are either used in playing or as a decoration in the living room or den. Chess sets are even used as centerpieces for libraries and studies. Some chess sets are even considered as heirlooms and are valued for their collectible quality.

1. Determine Your Reasons

Are you going to play with it or you going to use it for decorative purposes only? If you are going to play with it then look for a practical looking set. It should also fit your personal taste in the style.

2. Price

It is advisable to buy the best quality chess set that your budget can afford. A good chess set can last a lifetime and can even become an heirloom. You will definitely be admired by your friends when you take out a beautiful chess set. Of course, a finely crafted chess set can enhance every chess players' playing experience.

3. Tournament Guidelines

Unless you are using the chess set for official tournament use, you can do away with considering the size of the chess pieces in relation to the board. Nevertheless, the general guideline is that the King's base should be 78% of the width of a square. To get this, divide the King's base diameter by 0.78 and you get the proper square size. You can increase the square size by 1/8, but the square size should not be any smaller. This info is valuable if you are buying the pieces separate from the board.

4. Durability

Choose an extremely durable chess set if you are planning to use your chess set daily and take it to tournaments and clubs. A weighted plastic chess set would be a good choice. If you need a handy chess set that you could carry anywhere then it is advisable that you get a travel chess set which are small and compact. These kind of chess is usually magnetic or pegged to protect against bumps and jolts. The boards can be folded and the pieces and pawns can be kept inside. Travel chess sets ara available for for somewhere around $20 A very basic one can even be had for $10 or less. You may even find miniature ones sold in most dollar stores.

6. Special Considerations For Wooden Sets

If you are buying a chess set that is made from wood then choose good quality wood. Wood is definitely a good material for a chess set. They are very impressive to look at and the pieces feel very solid. The only disadvantage is that they can be really heavy and are therefore not ideal for traveling. Wood chess sets will definitely be a great addition to your home or office. Wood sets and the prices can range from 50$ to as high as $5,000. In general, ebony is more expensive than rosewood, which is, in turn, more expensive than boxwood, etc. Exotic woods are more expensive still. There are less expensive sets that are made from oak, pine or walnut. In buying a wooden chess set let your budget be your guide.

7. Check For Uniformity

When buying a chess set check out the pieces, particularly the knights which can represent up to 50% of the total cost of all the chess pieces. The quality of the turnings, the finish and the uniformity also add to cost of the set. You must also check the craftsmanship of the King's crown that is usually decorative. Keep in mind that the King and the Knight are two of the most important pieces of a chess set.

8. Decorative Sets

Chess sets that are made from crystal or bone china are generally termed as Glass. These sets are commonly used for decorative purposes but you can also find glass sets that are practical. Crystal pieces are generally heavy while china pieces will feel a bit light unless they have weighted bases. These kinds of chess sets are definitely nice to look at but they are very fragile and will break once they are dropped. They are also easily dirtied by dust and fingerprints. Although beautiful to look at, the pieces will break if dropped and fingerprints can become a problem on some models. They're dust collectors too. Many people keep a glass set for looks and another type for actual play. Glass chess sets average in the $300 to $2,000 range.
Almost unaltered for the last 500 years, the game of chess remains immensely popular. Today, it's approximated that over 605 million people worldwide are informed of the game.

How to get involved yourself?

It's not as difficult as you may imagine, but it does take a little bit of a primer. To start, let's initiate with the basic tools of the game. There are really only two essentials: First, the chess board and 2) the chess set.

Let's Start

Compiled of sixty-four squares (with 8 rows by 8), switching between white and black, a chess board provides the figurative battlefield on which players maneuver. From this point forward, chess players are able to design their assaults, defend their sovereign, and guard their ground.

At the outset of every game, chess pieces are lined at the upper and lower rows. From these starting locations, strategies and tactics evolve. Executed between 2 opponents, chess is fundamentally a fight between two armies. The chess pieces correspond to that of a medieval armament, furnished with a king, a queen, two bishops, 2 knights, 2 rooks, and eight pawns.

The overall goal of chess is to seize the king of the opponent, which if productive, will effectively cease the fight (and game). To do so is to checkmate their opposition. Take Note that a game can also end in a impasse, if it's apparent that no sure checkmate is possible.

Again, a chess board consists of sixty-four squares, which has been the way for more than 1,300 years now, going back to the game's beginning with the Indian game Chaturanga. The rows are denoted as rank and the columns file. Ranks are numbered one to eight, while files are marked as a-f. Therefore, every last square has its own related name on the grid.

A Couple Of Rules of Thumb

When notating, recall that it's file first, which signifies the file key is always first. E.g., the lower right square would be a8 or a-file, 8th rank. While the notational system isn't required for the introductory chess participant, maintaining track of files and ranks is a easy way of visualizing the playing field, measuring space, and therefore, projecting one's strategy.

Equally for the chess sets, every one consists of 32 color-coded pieces: 16 are set-aside for the white player and the other sixteen for the black. At the beginning, a color/side is selected: white or black, which also determines who goes first. The participant allotted the white chess pieces invariably has the honor.

Also, talking of color, when setting up a chess board, remember: white=right. This mnemonic rhyme will assist you turn the board correctly, as appropriate setup of chess sets is imperative, especially if one is scoring the game. In the bottom right-hand corner, there must always be a white square. For both players. If it is a black square, turn the chess board one time before placing the chess pieces down.

Making the 1st Move

Congratulations! Now that you have got your chess board positioned correctly and your chess set properly distributed, it's time to play and to create that important beginning move.<bio>Elizabeth Traineroni is a chess expert, researcher and writer who takes time out to write articles in her spare time, where she'll help you pick out the perfect chess set. This very basic knowledge is necessary to truly grasp the power of each chess piece and in the course of a match, make the most of that individual piece's power.

The Pivotal 16

Each player begins the game with 16 chessmen: 1 king, 1 queen, 2 bishops, 2 knights, 2 rooks, and 8 pawns. To properly position the pieces on a chess board, start with the rooks and move inward. The two rooks are placed on the lower corner squares. Next to them go the knights, followed by the bishops.

The queen is next. Lastly, the king sits in the final square of the row. The pawns are placed on the second row in front of the king's "court."

The pieces of a chess set collectively show a player's power. What she does with this potential power is what ultimately determines who wins the game. The overall goal is to keep the king safe. To do so, a player must utilize each chess piece to its maximum strength. In short, chess pieces are capable of the following moves:

King: Moves only one square at a time, but in any direction. It's the most important piece on a chess board. If/when captured, the game is over. The king's special move is called castling; it is the only time two pieces can move at once (king and rook).

Queen: Moves in any direction for any number of squares. It is the most powerful piece on the board, capable of capturing and positioning from most any vantage point.

Bishop: Moves diagonally for any number of squares, yet is limited to one color. It is sensitive to pawn movement.

Knight: Moves two squares vertically or horizontally, then one square to the side. Its unique movement often factors into strategy.

Rook: Moves by rank or file for any number of squares. Starting in the corners, the rook -- along with the queen -- are major pieces on the chess board, capable of altering space and an opponent's plan of attack.

Pawn: Moves only one square at a time and only forward. However, on the opening move, it can choose between two squares or one. A seemingly weak piece, a pawn can also be promoted if it safely reaches the end of the board. If it succeeds, a pawn can be exchanged for any other chess piece, except the king. Most often, a pawn gets promoted to queen.

What's My Move?

It may seem too much to learn all this at once, but in order to truly grasp the potential of your chess pieces, it's important you first understand what each individual piece is capable of. For instance, feeling despaired that you're left with only pawns? Don't forget about pawn promotion. Feeling like your king is being threatened? Consider castling him. By understanding your pieces' potential, a chess board can truly open up with possibilities. You just need to recognize them first.<bio>Elizabeth Traineroni is a chess expert, researcher and writer who takes time out to write articles in her spare time, where she'll help you pick out the perfect chess set.
The internet has effected us all, the whole world is changed by the internet and its power of communication, one of the most amazing examples of the power of the internet is the change it has brought to the game of chess, and the changes that are about to shake the old world traditional games is just beginning to emerge out of the turmoil that the internet gaming culture has created.

Chess has always been known to be a game of minds, the power of mathematical thinking and the understanding of the enemy strategy and future moves was in the heart of the game that was invents in ancient Persia and played by millions of people around the world for centuries. In modern times society has decided to promote chess as a game for the masses and not as it was portrayed for many year as a game for the high society and intellectual elite, this has created an overwhelming passion for chess and has indeed made chess a global game that can be played by all without relation to social standings and educational pedigree. The same technique was used for promoting tennis and later golf to the weaker levels of society, as a way of distancing the stigma that an activity acquires and making it possible for all to enjoy and compete equally.

The game of chess however is very different to other sports and activities, it can be played over long periods of time and playing partners can play against others while their board at home still holds a very delicate chess situation with a completely different competitor. There was a time in which it was very popular for movies to show how friends play chess one against the other on the phone, when they are actually miles away or even in different continents, and the reality today is that the same thing has actually happened, now people can play against anyone, anyone in the whole world.

By logging into mass chess playing rooms in the internet one can find competitors and play against them, learn new tactics and make friends from all over the world, what was once done only in chess conventions and meetings is being done right now all over the world, by using the internet as a immediate chess playing tool. This new opportunity for the ancient game is another landmark on its ever-growing popularity in the world, now chess is heading for a completely impersonal era where players will compete without shaking each others hands before the game, they will be physically apart.

Visiting the chess rooms online will reveals a whole new chess community that is thriving in the cyber world, one should experience the passion of online chess if only to whiteness players playing around the clock with others like them on different time zones around the world. Like the legendary sand bird the game of chess rises to the technological challenges over and over again, making chess played over and over again in different centuries by different people in all so many different ways, chess is truly the king of games. <bio>David Evermon has been involved in many environment related projects, writing on many subjects related to the environment and his hobbies, David writes articles about Chess at http://chess.advice-tips.com </bio>

This is the second part of a three part article series investigating scientific research into the value of chess as a tool to aid cognitive development. In this part, the Fried and Ginsburg study will be discussed (The Effect of Learning to Play Chess on Cognitive, Perceptual, andamp; Emotional Development in Children. Unpublished paper available from U.S. Chess Federation).

Fried and Ginsburg Study

A subsequent study by Steven Fried and Norman Ginsburg expanded on Christiaen's study by attempting andquot;... to identify specific cognitive, perceptual-motor, and emotional gains produced by learning chess and which may account for improved performance as demonstrated in Christiaen's study.andquot;

The Fried and Ginsburg study used three measures for assessing cognitive skills: the block design subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), the picture completion subtest of the WISC-R, as an indicator of visual awareness to detail; and the Survey of School Attitudes, as a measure of regard for school. The study design used three treatment conditions: one group received chess instruction twice a week for eighteen weeks, another attended a biweekly 'rap' session for the same period, while the third group acted as a no-contact control group.

The results of the study failed to clearly identify any specific area of significant differentiation between groups. The picture completion tast, however, showed a trend in the predicted direction with the chess group scoring highest, the counseling group next, followed the no-contact control group. In the other two test categories significant gender related differences within the chess group was noted. The authors hypothesize that gender related factors such as male competitiveness and aggressiveness are involved, but admit that further research is require to explore these factors.

The andquot;Value of Chess as a Learning Aid Part IIIandquot;, will discuss another study which provides compelling evidence that chess makes your kids smarter! It will be available shortly on this website. <bio>Robert is a chess coach with over 20 years of teaching experience and has been master ranked chess player for even longer.
There are those who play chess occasionally, and those who simply love the game. Those who love the game can play for hours and will play every chance they get. For them, chess accessories are as essential as having the pieces and the board. The accessories complete their gear, just as having the right equipment for a sport like tennis or skiing makes a difference.

Chess Clocks for Serious Players

You don't have to compete at the tournament level to appreciate what playing with a chess clock adds to the complexity and challenge of the game. Playing "against the clock" adds drama and mental challenge that takes the game to another level. By allotting a specific amount of time to each player for a specific amount of moves (for instance, a total of two hours to complete the first forty moves), the game becomes strategically more complex. The player has to decide how much time to spend on each move and when to move despite uncertainty in order to keep themselves ahead of the clock.

Chess clocks can be either digital (allegro) or analog (mechanical), and which you use depends on the rules of the chess game you are participating in. In general, digital clocks with a time delay feature is preferred for tournament play. But for players who simply like to enjoy a more challenging game with their chess partners, an analog chess clock is just as good.

Protecting Your Chess Investment

Most avid players end up purchasing chess pieces that are finely crafted and expensive. Some are virtual works of art, produced in limited editions and made of materials ranging from alabaster to precious metals or rare woods. To ensure that these chess pieces aren't damaged, specially designed chess storage boxes are used. These boxes are lined with soft materials such as felt or velvet and slotted or molded to hold each chess piece individually to protect against scratches or nicks when the pieces aren't in use.

You can find chess boxes made from a variety of materials such as wood, metal, vinyl and leather. Many of these are designed to be displayed on a shelf, with attractive colors and detailing.

Chess Tables -- the Ultimate Accessory

If you play chess nearly every day, or even once a week, a chess table is the ultimate luxury. For those religiously scheduled evenings of chess, nothing beats a beautifully crafted piece of furniture designed with the chess board built right into the top.

Playing on a chess table eliminates worry about the board sliding or being knocked over and provides a stable surface for play. When not being used for a game, a chess table becomes a lovely piece of accent furniture that compliments any décor. If you would like to display your chess pieces when not in use, a chess table is the perfect way to do so.

Every chess fan discovers ways to increase their appreciation of the game, and having elegant, high quality accessories is on way to do this. If you know someone who loves to play chess, perhaps you should gift them with a special chess accessory <bio>Kevin Hall works for BraRoe Chess.
I come from a family of golfers. Golf is the favorite recreation of everyone in my family, including my grandparents, my mom and dad, myself and my four siblings. Every year, we have a family reunion of sorts featuring all my relatives from my father's side. At those gathering, the entire clan always has a sportsfest wherein each of the different families take on one another in four key sports. We always win the golf competition. The others are volleyball, ping pong and chess.

My dad told me to study chess for next year's family sportsfest. I complained a lot at the beginning but have grown quite fond of the game. I often like to recite the history of the game to my friends and, actually, to anyone willing to listen.

Like the game of golf, chess also has a number of fathers as many countries claim to have originated the game. This has some basis especially if you note that the Arabic, Persian, Greek, Portuguese and Spanish words for chess are all derived from the Sanskrit game Chaturanga. You might also want to consider the fact that among all countries, only India had three animals in its cavalry -- the horse, camel and elephant. In chess, these are believed to be represented by the knight, bishop and rook.

In addition, in the past only India had all three animals, horse, camel and elephant, in its cavalry, which represent knight, bishop and rook in chess. Also, there are a lot of similarities between the way chess is played today and the way Chaturanga was played in India during the 6th century. Historians believe the Persians later created a more popular version of the game and called it Shatranj. But there is yet another theory that claims that chess started from a game called Xiangqi that traces its roots to China during the 2nd century. there are a number of well-known scholars and historians who support the latter theory.

Eventually, the popularity of chess caught on in the west particularly in Europe as well as to the east particularly in Japan. Chess also started to spread throughout the world of Islam following the Muslim's conquest of Persia. After some time, chess found its way to Russia (via Mongolia) where people started playing it in the 7th century. In the 10th century, the Moors introduced chess into the Iberian Peninsula as mentioned in a popular 13th century manuscript that also covered backgammon and dice, which was referred to as the Libro de los juegos. Historians say that the entry of chess into Europe is characterized by the enhancement of the queen's powers. <bio>Kadence Buchanan writes articles for http://universeofentertainment.com/ - In addition, Kadence also writes articles for http://foodandourlives.com/ and http://4boatingstuff.com/ </bio>

On the day that I was old enough to understand the importance of strategic maneuvering when playing a game, my father decided that it was time for me to learn chess. Within a couple of months, I was carrying the chess board everywhere I was going, inviting friends to challenge my new game abilities. I still remember the reactions of those who have never been introduced to chess. They used to look me straight into the eyes asking me why they should waste their time playing such a difficult and boring game. I do not know even where to begin in order to describe what a beautiful game chess really is. With its variety of sacrifices and combinations, those who are eager to learn how it feels to belong to the winner's side can advance their gaming experience through chess. Having the opportunity to outwit your opponent either on the tactical or on the positional level, chess is in fact a game that requires a constantly working mind. Perhaps it is a "difficult" game, but this is the only way one can really be proud of the attained goal of winning a worthy opponent. Now in relation to the accusation of chess being boring, after playing chess frequently for more than ten years in a row, I really cannot describe how far away from the truth this statement really is.

First of all, if you are up to the chess challenge, you have to begin by learning the rules of the game. Being an abstract strategy board game, chess is played by two players on a square board that combines eight rows-called ranks -and eight columns- called files. Its simple design creates sixty-four squares of alternative color: one darker than the other. Each of the players is assigned to sixteen pieces (units) at the beginning of the game, which as the game progresses they are eliminated by the opponent's movements on the board. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent. This practically means that one of the players has successfully managed to perform all the appropriate strategic movements so as to threaten the opponent's king from moving. It has to be stressed that due to the variety of the chess pieces and their distinct abilities on the game's board, chess has successfully become one of the world's most popular games.

Garry Kasparov and Robert Fischer-or Bobby-have been famous chess players worldwide, due to their exceptional abilities in combining the art of chess with the strategic maneuvering entailed in disciplines of science. Considered by many funs to be a "mental martial art," chess has gained its popularity among the nations of Asia, Europe and the Americas. Generally known as Western Chess or International Chess, to be distinguished from its many variations, the chess I was taught by my father is currently being played in a number of counties, some of which claim to have invented its original form. The most commonly held view is that chess originated in India, since the Arabic, Persian, Greek, Portuguese and Spanish words for chess all come from the Sanskrit game Chaturanga.

Currently, chess funs can be found anywhere from Japan to Sweden and chess players can locate their future opponents on the online forums and websites specifically designed to the pleasure of playing chess. If you are considering taking up the chess challenge, visit your local chess listings and you will be surprised of how many people are daily committed in exercising their mental abilities via a fun and instructive game like chess. <bio>Jonathon Hardcastle writes articles for http://everythingaboutgames.net/ - In addition, Jonathon also writes articles for http://4boatingstuff.com/ and http://thetennisstop.net/ </bio>

This is the third part of a three part article investigating scientific research into the value of chess as a tool to aid cognitive development. This article will summarize the results of a study about the positive value of chess in kids' education, by Ferguson (Ferguson, Robert, 1995. andquot;Chess in Education: Research Summary. A Review of Key Chess Research Studies.andquot; For the Borough of Manhattan Community College Chess in Education 'A Wise Move' Conference.)

Ferguson Study

The most compelling evidence that instruction in chess aids learning comes from a four-year project (1979-1983) directed by Robert Ferguson. Ferguson implemented an enrichment program for gifted students in grades 7-9 in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Enrichment activities including chess, Dungeons and Dragons, andquot;Olympics of the mindandquot;, problem solving with computers, creative writing, independent study, etc., were used to stimulate thinking. The impact of these activities was measured by administering the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal and the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking at the beginning of the program, and at the end of each subsequent year.

The results were astonishing. Non-chess enriched students showed an average annual increase of 4.6% on the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal, while the average in increase for chess-enriched students was 17.3%. On the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking, non-chess to chess group comparisons averaged; fluency 6.0/19.9; flexibility 9.5/22.8; originality 34.8/70.0. Even though this program was administered to gifted students, the logical conclusion that chess is a positive factor in the cognitive development of children in general is indisputable.

The preceding studies represent most of the scientific evidence currently available. Their emphasis is on measuring cognitive attributes without much weight given to social and emotional considerations. However, a substantial amount of material describing the positive social and emotional effects of chess programs is available from a wide array of publication. A growing body of evidence shows that chess promotes greater levels of self-esteem and confidence, comradeship, and a healthy competitive rivalry among its participants.

To conclude, chess is a beneficial activity for children. Both scientific and practical evidence suggest that chess improves a wide array of thinking and reasoning skills, as well as social and motivational factors. Chess develops memory, improves concentration, develops logical thinking, and helps develop imagination and creativity. Best of all, it is fun to play, and can be enjoyed by students of all ages. <bio>Robert is a chess coach with over 20 years of teaching experience and has been master ranked chess player for even longer. Perhaps it is a andquot;difficultandquot; game, but this is the only way one can really be proud of the attained goal of winning a worthy opponent.

Considered by many funs to be a andquot;mental martial art, andquot; chess has gained its popularity among the nations of Asia, Europe and the Americas.
