Insects can cause a lot of damage to your garden or lawn. They are one of the worst kinds of pest that exist. Fortunately, there are several methods that you can employ to protect your garden or lawn from the insects. These ways for insect pest control include use of chemicals or use of organic methods to drive away these insects. However, you should ensure that the methods that you employ for insect pest control do not harm you as well. The use of chemicals in the form of pesticides may result in various kinds of diseases in your family. They might be effective in removing the pests, but they will harm your family in the process as well. Boric acid is a good pesticide that is a chemical that is used to repel insects. The most effective strategy is choosing plants that repel insects. There are several species of plants that repel certain kinds of insects. Basil is a flower that repels flies and mosquitoes. A flower that repels insects like flies, mosquitoes, chiggers and fleas is the Pennyroyal. You can also plant Pennyroyal, Rosemary, Rue and Thyme in your house to get rid of insects from inside your house so that the plants inside your house are safe.

You can also use plants that attract certain kinds of insects and worms that eat certain other insects that may be harmful for your garden. These kinds of insects include pest control bees, lady bugs, lacewings and two different kinds of wasps insect which are parasitic wasps and ichneumon wasps.
Many people are, in my opinion, rightly concerned about pesticides. 31,000 tons of pesticides are sprayed on UK land each year. Farm workers may have direct, intense contact with pesticides, but the general population are also exposed to pesticides via residues in and on food, pesticides in the air, as a result of spraying in fields, pesticides applied to road sides to control weeds, and even pesticide contamination of drinking water. As well as the active ingredients there are also likely to be chemicals used to help the stickiness and consistency of the pesticide.

PAN UK (formerly the Pesticide Trust) cites studies that have shown:

93% of non-organic oranges analysed contained pesticide residues 78% of apples analysed contained pesticide residues 43% of all fruit and vegetables analysed had detectable levels of pesticides 50% of lettuce contained residues from 7 or more chemical 71% of cereal bars with residues 83% of oily fish showed pesticide residues

Looking at the health risks of pesticides is difficult because many of the risks may be long term and these can be difficult to establish. There is also the problem of pesticide interaction, and the interaction of pesticides with other chemicals encountered in the environment. We just do not know enough to be certain that these chemicals are safe for us, but harmful to pests.

There are two basic types of pesticides:

Organochlorides kill pests by attacking their central nervous systems. Linked to cancer, birth defects and genetic changes in animals. They are fat-soluble and stored in body fat. They are far more persistent than organophosphates.

Organophosphates interfere with nerve conduction in pests. They are the most common pesticide used today. They are water-soluble and break down rapidly.

Governments control the use of pesticides through legislation, and there are various lists of banned and restricted pesticides. Since 1993 the EU has been implementing a programme to establish harmonised Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for pesticide residues in foodstuffs sold in the EU. Once the level is agreed for a pesticide, EU member states are obliged to incorporate these MRLs into their national legislation within 12 months.

How effective is pesticide policing?

Investigations continually show that illegal and dangerous pesticides are appearing in food. This appears to be from two sources: illegal use of pesticides in a country, and also the use of pesticides that are legal (or unpoliced) in the country where the food is grown. In 1996 a UK investigation by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food showed that over 4% of the milk supply contained amounts of lindane above the maximum recommended levels, and in 2 samples DDT was detected even though it has been banned for over 10 years. [The Food Magazine, Issue 34, 1996]

There are likely to be commonly used pesticides that will prove eventually to be harmful. This has happened repeatedly with problems only being scientifically pinpointed after many years of use. There is no reason to feel confident that governments have identified and banned all harmful pesticides. Surely it is better to ere on the side of safety and buy properly certified organic products? <bio>Jane Thurnell-Read is a writer and researcher on health.
Organic gardening can be described as gardening without the use of man-made chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Some say it provides the gardener a harmony with nature. It is not a new concept, but has become an increasingly popular type of gardening in recent years given the fact that everyone is going "green". Organic can mean different things to different people. Organic gardening is a little more than just not using chemicals or non organic fertilizers on your garden. An organic gardener should consider his/her garden as part of the bigger picture in nature and life itself.

Organic gardening is a simple way to ensure that you are growing the highest-quality produce in a sustainable way that is healthy for the plants and the planet. It is one of the oldest methods of cultivation, and the food it will produce is not only healthier for you it's less expensive to. You may find that it might become the most rewarding hobby, or lifestyle, you have ever undertaken. Organic gardening is a simple healthful way to convert living organisms into carbon compounds in a way that considers the whole of nature and its integral place in that scheme.

Organic gardening uses natural compost and manure to fertilize and grow plants and flowers. Since you will be using natural compost no harmful chemicals or pesticides are used on your plants. Some gardeners are willing to invest in some extras required by organic gardening because it ensures that no harmful pesticides or fungicides will be used. By growing a garden without chemical fertilizers, you will naturally build the soil to support healthy plant life. Chemical fertilizers and additives will, over time, damage the soil's ability to provide what plants need to resist disease, insect attacks, and stress.

Organic gardening is all about balance between the soil and its nutrients, the water, the air, and of course your plants. It is easy, relaxing and fun. Being a green gardener means you don't use synthetic fertilizers or pesticides on your plants. It is all about working with the land to build healthy soil and plants. Think of organic gardening as a system that combines all aspects of gardening: soil, water, plants, animals; even insects!

So if you're considering organic gardening, it is an excellent way to grow your trees, shrubs, flowers, vegetables and plants. Your garden will benefit greatly from organic materials. It is an environmentally friendly, people friendly style of gardening. And its methods can be utilized by virtually anyone to create and maintain sustainable gardens, in the city or country. If you are thinking of starting an outdoor garden project you should consider giving the organic method a try. You will enjoy the accomplishment of growing you own healthy foods and enjoy the health benefits it can provide. It may take a while to figure out the best ways of doing things. I suggest picking up a few books on the subject and doing a bit of research on the types of tools you will need and the plants that work best. With a little practice you will be an expert gardener in no time at all.<bio>Dale Martin hosts a website called gardening-reviews.comIf you would like to learn more about organic gardening or to read reviews on gardening products and tools please visit us at http://www.gardening-revews.com</bio>

Information on Organic Products

You may be shocked at how much of the produce at your local supermarket has been genetically modified with chemicals and pesticides. While there is strong evidence that chemically modified foods are harmful to your health, there have been no long term studies done either.

Here is a quote from The Environmental Protection Agency "Pesticides are designed to kill pests. Many pesticides can also pose risks to people. The health effects of pesticides depend on the type of pesticide. Some, such as the organophosphates and carbonates, affect the nervous system. Others may irritate the skin or eyes. Some pesticides may be carcinogens. Others may affect the hormone or endocrine system in the body." Now let's take a look at the fertilizers and pesticides that are used for farming. Pesticides infiltrate deep into the foliage of plant life and they reside even after you bring them home and wash them or use some product to make sure they are clean and free of bugs.

It is best to buy organic fruits and vegetables but they can be so expensive that sometimes it just does not fit into your budget. The best part is that anybody with some soil and a shovel can grow a vegetable garden which means, healthy organic vegetables at a fraction of the price. Many of the vegetables are noticeably tastier and sweeter, not to mention healthier when they come strait from a home garden.

How to Plant Fruit trees

Another great way to produce your own organic fruits is to grow your own fruit trees. Now this requires a little more experience but it is well worth it. The fruit trees will have to be planted in a place where you can get the roots to go grow deep enough.

Apples are considered on of the most popular fruit today and when grown properly a single tree can produce up to 500 apples in a season. They taste nothing like they use to when I was a kid. It bothers me to know that the kids today have to deal with pesticides that stay in the fruit long after the crop was gathered. Then they are waxed and stored in chemical dependant surroundings. Some other possible trees to consider planting are cherry, lemon, lime, plum, pear and orange trees. Explore what will grow in your neighborhood and plant, plant, plant.

The Best Flowers, Shrubs and Herbs

Every garden should have some variety of attractive flowers. It's essential to gardens! When you have a climate that is considered dry and pretty hot then planting herbs like rosemary, thyme and sage are best. When the climate is humid but still sunny then planting herbs like chives, shallots, Italian parsley, tarragon and coriander and cooler climates suits borage, peppermint and lemon balm. This is just some suggestions but try to plant species that are native to your area. Have you considered that if you plant flowers that attract local insects, frogs or birds that this too helps with the growth of your garden. <bio>Alyssa Nair has written valuable information on organic products.
The world that we live in is filled with many different technological advances. While most of these advances are beneficial to us there are some which can harm us. One example of this is the use of genetically modified food. The food which is produced in this manner is unnatural and will cause health problems in the long run. For this reason you have groups of people like the organic consumers association which takes the part of the consumer.

This group is battling large chemical corporations and governmental procedure to make sure that you have the right to eat whatever food that you want. If this food can be free from harmful pesticides and fertilizers then you can be sure that the organic consumers association will look to this matter.

Before any food can be thought of as being organic the organic consumers association will do a background check on the place where the food was grown. In order for a land to be deemed suited for organic food growing there should be no trace of chemical or pesticides being used in that area for more than 2 years.

Once the land has recovered from the chemical pollution the organic consumers association will give their go ahead for the land to start producing edible food. To make sure that the produce which are grown here are free from harmful pests the use of friendly bugs and compatible plants will need to be introduced.

Now what is meant by these friendly bugs is insects like Ladybugs and spiders. These insects have your plants good health at heart. By this you will see the crop eating bugs being taken as a tasty snack by the aforementioned insects. You will also find that some plants have the ability of repel the plant eating insects before they cause damage to your organic garden.

If you aren't sure about the type of fertilizers and plant food to place in your garden the organic consumers association will have some helpful tips for you to look at. These will of course have to be natural and organic fertilizers but once you have committed to this course of having organic foods it is only natural to use all natural fertilizing products too.

While many of us are still stuck in the same old rut of greasy artery clogging foods, the organic consumers association is taking steps to provide us with a better and very healthy lifestyle. You will find that the many organic foods which are available to be absolutely delicious and 100% organically natural. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.herbalremedieslk.com , http://myshabi.blogspot.com , http://myaroma.blogspot.com </bio>

Organic lawn fertilizers have brought new options to homeowners who desire both a green lawn and a green lifestyle. Environmental issues continue to be a concern in our society, and good citizens everywhere are doing all they can to preserve the health of our beautiful planet. Using organic fertilizers instead of chemical products is an easy way to make a difference, and many would be surprised at the effectiveness of the organic solutions. Listed below are some of the many proven benefits of natural fertilizers and insecticides.

Safe for Your Family The most obvious value to using an organic lawn fertilizer is to preserve the safety of your family members and animals. Commercial lawn treatments are a cocktail of dangerous chemicals and poisons that cling to shoes, skin, and hair. Even the most cautious application can result in an accidental poisoning. And if you can protect your family and pets from exposure, it is often impossible to prevent wildlife and other organisms from ingesting these chemicals.

Bio-Degradable Scientifically engineered chemicals react with our planet in very unnatural ways. Almost every naturally occurring resource on earth has the capacity to break down and return value to the environment. Man-made chemicals on the other hand are much harder to dissipate, and often form more potent by-products in the process. Every commercial brand chemical fertilizer contains compounds that are not only initially toxic, but ultimately breakdown and multiply into more toxins.

Less Waste A major flaw with chemical lawn fertilizers is their "kill everything" approach to lawn care. These herbicides and pesticides may indeed kill unwanted nuisances like dandelions and ants, but they also destroy thousands of helpful organisms such as bees, earthworms, and beneficial microorganisms. Even if your lawn was comprised of 50% weeds, then you would still poison the soil in the remaining 50% with unnecessary chemicals. With organic lawn fertilizers, there is no concern for toxic runoffs or harmful integration with other organisms.

Organic lawn care is not only the best choice in terms of safety for your family, but it is also an effective alternative to chemical fertilizers. The proper application of organic fertilizers and pesticides will keep your lawn green and disease free. And as an added benefit to "going green", organic formulas can save a substantial amount of money. Many effective formulas can be created in your kitchen with inexpensive ingredients found at your local grocery store.
Environmental and health concerns have led to a widening of the definition of "hazardous waste". Most people assume that this term refers only to toxic, chemical or industrial waste, but in fact all businesses are probably now producing some form of hazardous waste that needs to be disposed of carefully and legally.

So, how do you know if you're about to throw away something that's classified as hazardous waste? Follow the checklist below, which isn't exhaustive, but which does cover everyday business items that you might throw in the skip without thinking about it:

• Fluorescent strip lighting • Acid lead, mercury and NiCad batteries • Pesticides, including domestic garden pesticides • Certain paints and decorating products • Oils • Solvents • Aerosols • Redundant IT equipment • Old televisions • Scrap cars • Fridges, freezers and air conditioning systems • Chemical, manufacturing or other industrial waste

If your business produces waste in any of these areas, you need to be sure that you are arranging legal disposal. In the UK, many local authorities have put aside areas at public waste sites where you can dispose of small quantities of hazardous waste, but if you produce any of the above regularly, or in any volume, you must arrange for a registered company to collect and dispose of it.

If you are unsure about the classification of the waste your business produces, then seek the advice of an expert. Hazardous waste disposal companies have the knowledge and experience to help you identify and categorise the waste you produce and give you advice on putting together a disposal plan. Depending on how much waste you produce, you can set up a regular collection facility which ensures that your waste is never allowed to build up beyond acceptable levels, and is always disposed of legally and safely.

If you don't have any provision for hazardous waste disposal, or you didn't realise that some of the items in the above list had be classified as hazardous, then you need to get advice as soon as possible. <bio>Envirogreen is a leading UK hazardous waste disposal company, which can help businesses and homeowners get rid of hazardous waste safely and legally.
Organic lawn care is certainly worth trying out if you want a bouncy, healthy green lawn.

When it comes to looking after the lawn, there are hundreds of pesticides and fertilizer that you can purchase. However, most of these can have a really negative effect on the environment and potentially even on your health too. The good news is, there is an alternative to these potentially harmful chemical pesticides and it comes in the form of organic lawn care.

Why Use Organic Lawn Care?

When you use organic lawn care products, you are helping to protect the environment and also you are helping to protect yourself. Basically organic lawn care products can be made from many things that are found within the home.

The main thing to remember is that you need to first analyze your lawn and see exactly what needs to be done. For example, does the lawn have weeds that need to be killed? Does it have any dead grass and leaves? Whatever your lawn problems, they need to be sorted out as soon as possible before you use any organic products on the lawn. This is because in order for the organic lawn care products to work, the lawn needs to be stable as it will be going through a big change.

As soon as you start using organic products you will notice a huge difference. The grass generally tends to grow thicker, bouncier and it will retain moisture a lot better too. So you will not have to water the lawn as much as usual and that saves you a lot of time to do the things that you actually want to do. Watering the lawn can take ages, especially in summer and so anything that saves you from having to water the lawn so much has got to be a good thing!

In order to make your own organic lawn care products, you can get inspiration both on the Internet and in some gardening magazines. You just might be surprised by what you can use and you will be helping to make the environment a safer place. For example, salt can be used to kill weeds and it is obviously a lot more environmentally friendly than chemical weed killers.

Overall finding organic lawn care products is not overly difficult. If you do not want to use your own, then you can purchase some in most gardening stores. If you cannot find what you are looking for then ask at the customer help desk where you might be able to find organic products. <bio>Andrew Caxton is the consultant for http://www.lawn-mowers-and-garden-tractors.com .
Did you know that interest in gardening is increasing at a rapid rate? The increase is due to the under 35 set who is said to have a greater interest in the environment and going green. The primary field of gardening interest of Generation Y is organic gardening.

There has been a lot written about organic gardening in the mainstream media and it has become a very popular topic with many people around the world, not just youth. With so many more health and environmentally conscious people around today, organic gardening has become quite popular. With its explosive growth in the past decade, organic gardening has gained acceptance in mainstream society. No longer the realm of hippies and health fanatics, organic produce is now consumed by the general public and readily available in large chain grocery stores.

Organic produce has become a featured item at many large-chain grocery stores so it is no wonder people want to know more about organic gardening. Some would even grow their own organic produce if they only knew how or had the time or had the space for it.

But do we really know what organic gardening is.

My definition might differ from yours, but to me, organic gardening means raising vegetables, flowers and plants without harmful artificial chemical herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. I don't think it is possible to be one hundred percent organic and I certainly don't think the average hobby gardener should worry about meeting whatever the commercial gardening standards are in their particular area. But I do truly believe that people can enjoy a healthier life by including more organic gardening in their lives and more organic produce on their tables.

So how do we go about creating an organic gardening project that will actually result in healthy harvests of pure healthy foods? How do we nurture a sick planet back to health and assure a brighter future for ourselves and for future generations to come? Well, one way is to stop using so many chemical poisons in general and in our food in particular. It has been said that our food can contain up to 450 different added unnecessary and even dangerous chemicals.

By simply removing artificial chemicals from the gardening equation, we can improve our health. We can be successful at organic gardening without the use of chemicals through building the soil and mimicking nature's ways to do the rest. This doesn't mean that we don't adapt them, but in general, if we follow nature's lead and use the wisdom that the environment has accumulated over the course of Earth's history, we can be very successful in our organic gardening efforts.

Nature is diverse and resilient. It will always fight back to reclaim its rightful place in our ecosystem. Our agriculture will be so much more robust with organic gardening. Poly-culture and lack of pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers make organic gardening the only sane choice for our own health and the health of the planet. Try organic gardening today. <bio>Want more tips like this?
Nobody likes the thought of exposing their baby to chemicals or cancer-causing materials, or anything else that could harm them. The reality is that we live in a "chemical world" where nearly everything we touch, eat, and even the air we breathe have been affected by chemicals and synthetic materials that have been proven to be harmful to our health. Do you think you can keep your baby from being exposed to cancer causing materials? If so, then think again.

From the pots and pans you cook with, to your household cleaners and "air fresheners", many of the things you use day to day contain dangerous chemicals to which prolonged exposure can be deadly. From the mold hiding under your kitchen sink to the plastics that 99% of your baby's toys are made of, there are countless opportunities for your child to be exposed to substances and chemical agents that are known to cause cancer and numerous other serious health complications.

Most people don't realize the amount of exposure that their kids are subject to. Many people think that just because their kids are young and eat a healthy diet, they are less likely to have any considerable chemical build up in their systems. This just isn't true. Consider the following:

- Kids are smaller, and their immune systems aren't as strong. It takes LESS exposure for a chemical to negatively affect your child than it does for it to affect you.

- Many plastics contain known carcinogens (cancer-causing agents), and our kids' world is literally made of plastic. Whether it's their spoons or their bottles (and bottle liners), or the toys, teething rings, plates, cups, and even baby gates=85 babies and small children are surrounded by plastic almost 24/7.

- In lab tests, kids are often shown to have HIGHER levels of foreign chemicals in their bodies than adults.

Here's the bottom line: your kids are at risk of being exposed to some pretty nasty stuff. Chances are, they already have been. Some of it can't be avoided in today's world, but the things that we CAN do something about, we should.

This is where organic goods come in to play. More and more items that you use regularly are available in organic, people safe, environmentally safe forms. Many foods (even frozen dinners), household cleaners, personal care items, and even clothes can be purchased in "organic", all natural form. When something is organic, it means that no chemicals, pesticides, or unnatural substances of any kind have been used to produce it (at any point in the process).

For clothes, this means that the cotton used to create the clothes is organic. It has not been polluted with dangerous chemicals and pesticides! This is important because, according to statistics, cotton receives more pesticides (in percentage points) than any other single crop in the United States.

There are countless forces working against us... in the air, and in nearly everything we eat and touch. It only makes sense that our first line of defense should be the clothes that we wear every day.

If there were no choices, then the lack of action on the part of parents in regards to their kids' clothes would be understandable. But in today's world, there ARE choices. Even if you don't have a store or boutique nearby the offers natural baby clothes, you have PLENTY of choices for online shopping that often have seasonal deals and specials... so even the prices isn't as much of an issue.

Are natural baby clothes more expensive? Yes, unfortunately they are. Just in case there is any question, the health of your child is worth it!! It really isn't worth the risk to save a few dollars (or even a few hundred dollars) now and expose your kids to the "God-knows-what" that could be harmful or potentially fatal in the future. In a world where there are so many "enemies", your kids clothes can be just one more friend in your corner--and one more thing that you don't have to worry about. <bio>To get more tips for moms and babies and to learn where to find the best natural baby clothes visit Amanda's website at http://www.nobellah.com </bio>

Think of the earlier days when chemical fertilizers and harmful pesticides were not invented and people used to grow cereals and pulses, fruits and vegetables, flowers and seedlings using fertilizers from natural waste products. They were dependant on home made pesticides instead of chemical pest removers. The produces looked better, tasted better and were absolutely harmless.

Well, people have come to appreciate today the practice the earlier generation accomplished so well and regenerate the system for their own benefit. In short, the method involves no inorganic substances to be used in planting, nutrition or growth of plants and trees. Fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and supplements are all obtained only from nature. When this technique is applied to gardening, it is called Organic Gardening that is gaining popularity pretty fast and the produces thus obtained are termed Organic Food.

Though Organic Food is also available at most supermarkets, people prefer to grow them on their own for the extra satisfaction that no adulteration has taken place and the produces are genuinely 'home grown'.

The organic movement has gained momentum and has now become a national hobby that is as interesting as it is productive. However, pests are pests and they are merciless when attacking plants and herbs in an organic garden. But there are ways to get rid of them in a natural way. One simple method is to plant marigolds near the vegetable patch; another is to make a concoction of cooking oil, dish washing soap and water and spray the mixture to remove the pests.

Nor is the subject of natural fertilizers ignored. Merely using kitchen and garden waste materials that may contain potato and other vegetable peelings with a touch of rose prunings to improve the texture has solved the mysterious way of compost making. Coffee grounds add an agreeable smell to the blend. This also does away about disposing all that waste products. But make sure that everything is dry.

If you are interested to know how the organic garden lovers insulate and enrich the soil, I may till you now. It is a simple matter composed of pine needles and grass clippings gently spread over the ground right under the plant. Ingenious, isn't it?

By the way, parents of young children are worried about the chemicals that usually find their way in our food production and sometimes these chemicals get into the waterways, causing unknown damages to the human system. However, organic gardens are free from such hazardous chemicals and your kids and the dog, already a family member, can play there safely since it is a natural chemical free zone.

People indulge in organic gardening not only to obtain the product but also for their own mental satisfaction. Any creative work, big or small, always has its reward. Lovers of organic gardening derive immense pleasure in planting, pruning, enriching and taking care of their garden. And this taking care also becomes a part of the entire family as others are encouraged to take active part in the organic garden. They learn that it is important to identify with nature to survive and flourish. <bio>For more information about Organic Gardening and other outdoor activites visit our website at http://www.openairactivities.com/ </bio>

I used to have severe reactions to fragrances and many other chemicals in our air. I was practically allergic to everything, including lots of foods and pollen. For a while there, I was housebound.

First, I bought an air purifier that had a filter made with coconut shell carbon and zeolite. It helped dramatically. I filtered my water for drinking and bathing too.

Next, I eliminated household chemical cleaners, pesticides, all lawn care chemicals and replaced with healthier alternatives. I found natural body care products.

Then, I realized that chemical sensitivities are developed because the immune system is being compromised. I had to start from there and rebuild it with food.

If you give anything the right nourishment, it will naturally heal itself, be able to resist disease and fend off toxins much more easily.

No drug or chemical will do that for you. Even if pharmaceuticals give you relief, until you rebuild your immune system, you will just continue to develop other problems. You have to do this the old fashioned way.

My old fashioned recipe for creating health:

Try to stop focusing on the disease and concentrate on creating health.

Start with your colon. Take fiber, cut out processed food, sugar, and high glycemic carbohydrates. NO artificial sugar... use Stevia. Drink lots of water, plain clean water.

Eat lots of cultured vegetables, kefir and drink probiotic liquids every day. Get rid of all soy, eat and cook with coconut oil and take cod liver oil free from soy or synthetic ingredients. All organic vegetables, butter, protein etc........and so on.

It worked. I am 98% better. Most, if not all of my pollen and food allergies are gone as well. Physically, I am getting stronger than I ever imagined. I have my life back.

Concentrate on creating health instead of analyzing the disease or the chemical toxin. Until you work on the real problem, your immune system, more health issues will just come knocking on your door. Eating nourishing foods and concentrating on health, instead of the disease, are my solutions.

You can recover your health and be strong again. I am living proof.

Beverly Hartsfield <bio>Beverly Hartfield lives in the Portland, OR area and runs the website http://www.earthincommon.com..
In today's society -- with an ever vigilant eye towards health consciousness -- we are forever in search of those factors that will give us the edge in achieving maximum health. As we've learned, a healthy diet, a consistent regime of physical activity, and plenty of rest all has a profound impact on our overall vitality. Subsequently, there has been an overwhelming group of people that swear by the benefit of organic food.

Produced by organic farms, organic food is grown under strict government supervision. Under these guidelines, organic produce is grown and packaged without the use of any chemicals or pesticides. Traditionally grown, non-organic produce is subjected to a myriad of chemicals -- most of which are have not been studied thoroughly enough to understand or contemplate their long-term effects on the human body. Researchers are still undecided as to whether or not these chemicals can be linked to everything from food allergies to certain types of cancer. The benefit of organic food is that they are not subjected to these unreliable substances.

Meat and dairy produced under organic guidelines are also chemical free. Traditional agricultural farmers often subject livestock to a bevy of chemical supplements designed to speed their growth and weight. Further, dairy cows are often given chemicals to increase their milk production. The benefit of organic food is that livestock is given only organic feed that is chemical and supplement free.

Another benefit of organic food is its advantage to the environment. Traditionally grown produce are treated with chemicals; naturally the chemicals are then in the soil, changing the landscape and contaminating the ground and surrounding water supplies. The benefit of organic food is the ground in which it is grown is left unchanged.

Making a commitment to organic food means making a commitment to your health; the benefit of organic food lies in the chemical free enjoyment of natural whole food. Further, the benefits to the environment are varied and long lasting. The decision to go organic is a healthy and responsible one. <bio>For easy to understand, in depth information about organic food visit our ezGuide 2 http://organicfood.ezguide2.com </bio>

Bottled drinking water is pure, right? Not necessarily. Bottled water can be less pure than municipal tap water in some parts of the United States. In fact, bottled water can actually be municipal tap water. Two examples are Coca Cola's Dasani brand and Pepsi Cola's Aquafina brand.

What is bottled water?

"Description. Bottled water is water that is intended for human consumption and that is sealed in bottles or other containers with no added ingredients except that it may optionally contain safe and suitable antimicrobial agents. Fluoride may be optionally added within the limitations established." The United States FDA

Who regulates what bottled water has in it?

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates bottled drinking water, which is classified as a "food". The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates tap water. Amazingly, the EPA guidelines for municipal water are stricter than the FDA restrictions for bottled drinking water! You might buy bottled drinking water that is acceptable to the FDA but is not acceptable for use as ordinary bathroom tap water.

The FDA's specific regulations for bottled water are found in Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR).

What are FDA standards?

Under the standard of quality (21 CFR, 165.110[b]), FDA allows certain levels of contaminants in bottled water.

Contaminants bottled water has in it.

1. Coliform. Coliform are rod-shaped bacteria, such as E. coli, that are normally present in the human intestine. The FDA says that bottled water may have up to 9.2 coliform organisms per 100 milliliters. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

2. Arsenic. Arsenic is a poison. The FDA says that bottled water may have up to 0.05 milligrams per liter of arsenic. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

3. Chloride. Chloride is a compound of chlorine, a substance used to disinfect tap water. The FDA allows up to 250.0 milligrams per liter of chloride in bottled water. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

4. Iron. Iron is a metallic element. Your body needs some iron, but not too much. The FDA permits bottled water to contain up to 0.3 milligrams per liter of iron. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

5. Manganese. Manganese resembles iron and is used in fertilizers. Bottled water may contain up to 0.05 milligrams per liter of manganese. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

6. Phenols. Phenols are corrosive, poisonous acidic compounds. Your bottled water may contain up to 0.001 milligrams per liter of phenols. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

7. Dissolved solids. "Dissolved solids" is a catch-all phrase. The FDA allows bottled water to contain up to 500 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, of whatever type. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

8. Zinc. Zinc is a metallic element. Your body needs some zinc, but not too much. The FDA permits bottled water to contain up to 5.0 milligrams per liter of zinc. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

9. Fluoride. Fluoride is purposely added to some bottled water. If so, the label should say so. In addition, bottled water that is not labeled as containing fluoride may contain up to 2.4 milligrams per liter of fluoride. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Chemical contaminants bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows set levels of the following chemical contaminants in all bottled water. Amounts vary, but some are shocking, such as Barium. FDA regulations permit up to 2.0 milligrams per liter of barium. That is nearly the same as natural fluorides, even though barium is a toxic metallic element. Cyanide, another poison, is permitted in bottled water. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Here is a sampling of chemical contaminants bottled water has in it, along with the permitted milligrams per liter.

* Barium.................................... 2.0 * Chromium.................................. 0.1 * Copper.................................... 1.0 * Cyanide................................... 0.2 * Nickel.................................... 0.1 * Ethylbenzene (100-41-4)................... 0.7 * Monochlorobenzene (108-90-7).............. 0.1 * Styrene (100-42-5)........................ 0.1 * Toluene (108-88-3)........................ 1.0 * Xylenes (1330-20-7)....................... 10.0

Pesticides bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows set levels of pesticides in bottled water. There are set limits for each of 29 different pesticides. People who purchase bottled water believe, normally, that they are avoiding pesticides by doing so. For a listing of these pesticides, see 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Disinfectants bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows bottled water to contain set levels of residual disinfectants and disinfection byproducts. Examples from 21 CFR 165.110[b]:

* Disinfection byproducts

................... Bromate................................. 0.010 Chlorite................................ 1.0 Haloacetic acids (five) (HAA5).......... 0.060 Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM)............ 0.080 * Residual disinfectants

................... Chloramine.............................. 4.0 (as Cl2) Chlorine................................ 4.0 (as Cl2) Chlorine dioxide........................ 0.8 (as ClO2)

Radioactive materials bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows bottled water to contain set levels of radioactive material. See 21 CFR 165.110[b]. Three examples:

* "The bottled water shall not contain a combined radium-226 and radium-228 activity in excess of 5 picocuries per liter of water."

* "The bottled water shall not contain a gross alpha particle activity in excess of 15 picocuries per liter of water."

* "The bottled water shall not contain uranium in excess of 30 micrograms per liter of water."

Bottled water has in it more than regulations allow.

When bottled water does not meet the standards set out by the FDA, it might still be sold. By law, it should bear a suitable label.

Examples:

1. "Contains Excessive Bacteria"

2. "Contains Excessive Arsenic"

3. "Excessively Radioactive"

What You Can Do

* Take time to know what bottled water has in it. * Look for bottlers' web sites and compare information. * Write to bottlers with specific questions. * Remember that bottled water does not mean absolute purity. * Be sure yours is healthy drinking water. <bio>=A9 2007, Anna Hart.
Of all the forms of energy that humanity has developed in the past few hundred years of mass production, chemical energy is by far the most commonly used. Whether in the batteries that power all of our handheld devices and their chemical reactions, or in the millions of uses we've developed for fossil fuels and their numerous chemical reactions, chemical energy is a staple of our daily lives. Coal is burned for energy throughout the world, gasoline combusts every day in our vehicles, and natural gasses are burned for heating energy every night.

It's on a very basic level that chemical energy is stored. A chemical compound is composed of very simple collections of atoms, bound together. When the bond between these atoms loosens, a chemical reaction takes place and new combinations are created. Very simple reactions, such as the oxidation of metals occurs almost constantly.

However, when a chemical reaction occurs that is exothermic, in which energy is actually released and the chemical compound is reduced, it is possible to harvest that energy for our everyday use. The very simple processes that we observe every day such as the warming of the ground when the sun beats down on it are the same basic concepts that apply to these chemical reactions. For humanity to fully harness this chemical energy though, it's necessary to understand just what happens and how we can make it happen.

Chemical energy is stored in every bond between atoms in a molecule. If a molecule is broken down and reformed into new molecules, energy is released. This kind of reaction is present in every chemical compound we see; however it is the yield of energy that differs. Food, for example, is chemically broken down by our bodies and taken apart to obtain energy within our bodies. After the energy is removed from the food, the new molecules are separated, energy absorbed for our everyday use, and waste removed.

Another example of a simple chemical reaction used to obtain energy, is in the photosynthetic process a plant undertakes to garner energy from the sun. So much energy is present in the light of the sun that a plant is able to take it and apply to existing molecules in its own structure and create new ones with the presence of carbon dioxide and water.

Chemical energy is the easiest and most efficient energy source to store and utilize, if only because it is so readily available, found in nearly everything we use. Chemical energy, as used by our bodies has been the source of life for billions of years and the developments in chemical energy technology has led to long lasting rechargeable batteries and hopefully in renewable energy resources in the future. <bio>For more information on energy resources visit http://www.energyresourcesnet.com/ </bio>

There is a renewed interest in getting back to basics. Individuals, corporations and governments are focused on finding ways to preserve our natural resources. One way of protecting our environment, and enjoying the best nature has to offer, is by gardening organically.

There are few differences between 'regular' gardening and choosing to garden organically.

Planting methods are virtually the same. In both types of gardens, plants will have the same soil, sunlight and water requirements. The big difference lies in the control of weeds, insects and disease. In gardening organically, no chemical or synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilizers are used. Organic gardening may also result in a more in-depth tending to plants and soil.

Planting an organic garden begins with soil preparation. For the soil to be productive, organic material must be added. Compost is essential to success in gardening organically, as it promotes the health and well being of the plants. You can easily create your own organic compost by saving and mixing fruit and vegetable scraps, fallen leaves, pruned flowers, grass clippings and manure. Ideally, the compost will be dark and sweet smelling, and full of productive earthworms. In gardening organically, you may find that your soil needs more natural nutrients than compost alone can provide. A soil test will indicate the pH balance. If more nutrients are required you can incorporate natural additives like greensand, rock phosphates and bone meal.

Weeds A particularly frustrating and annoying problem with gardening organically is weeds. Laying organic mulch can provide a natural weed barrier. Layers of construction paper, cardboard or newspaper under the mulch provides added protection. Some organic gardeners swear by spreading corn meal gluten early in the season before planting, as this slows the growth of weeds. Solarization is another option. If you want to get down and dirty with your weeds, roll up your sleeves for some hoeing and hand pulling. Persistence will pay off in your battle against weeds. Use organic mulches and remove what you can by hand. It may take a few seasons, but it is possible to beat the weeds for good.

Insects If there is one area that tests even the most rigidly organic gardener, it's the need for pesticides. Insects can seriously harm a plant and, if left uncontested, can wipe out entire crops. Gardening organically does not allow the use of synthetic or chemical pesticides, so your best defense is to take preventative measures. Keep your plants at optimal health and be sure that the soil is not too wet, or too dry. Insects will attack unhealthy plants, but if your crop is healthy it can often outgrow minor insect damage. Keep many different varieties in your garden. If pests wipe out one type of plant, they won't necessarily take over the entire garden. The best way to defend against insects when gardening organically is to introduce natural predators to the area. Entice frogs, lizard, birds and ladybugs by keeping a fresh water supply available. Growing plants to attract insects that feed on nectar can also help, and you can use plant collars, barriers or sticky traps. Household items such as garlic, hot pepper and insecticide soaps can also help you beat the bugs.

Disease Gardening organically can make it tricky to avoid and combat plant disease. The best thing you can do is to choose disease resistant varieties, and plant them in their prime conditions. Constant moisture and poor air circulation will cause plant diseases to spread. Knowing where to plant your garden and how often to water it will help keep your organic garden disease-free.

Tending a garden is a wonderful hobby, and gardening organically is particularly rewarding. The plants you grow will be chemical free and naturally healthy.

You are what you eat, so having a chemical-free garden is ideal for those growing fruit and vegetable crops. While it may take a little extra time and effort, gardening organically is the best choice for you, your plants, and the environment. <bio>James Williams contributes to several web sites, including http://rukar.com and http://yuzie.com </bio>

There are lots of pests in this world, and at some point everyone will find themselves battling a pest. Pest can invade our garden, our home, buildings; the list goes on and on. Pests can be bugs, plants or animals. Just the mention of fleas, cockroaches, dandelions, mold, mice and rats can elicit strong emotions. Pests present a health hazard to your family, pets, and garden.

It is important to know how to properly control these pests that invade our lives. It is nearly impossible to eliminate pests, but it is imperative to control these invasive pests. There are various methods of controlling pests; these can include chemical control, biological control, mechanical methods, or a combination thereof.

Mechanical pest control is usually the most cost effective and if implemented before a vast infestation takes place can produce desired results. Mechanical methods include hand picking (such as pulling weeds) and traps (such as a mouse trap). Mechanical methods of pest control are usually the most environmentally friendly.

Biological pest control includes insecticides that are derived from plants or other naturally occurring substances such as microorganisms.

Chemical pest control includes the use of more toxic synthetic pesticides. Chemical pest control is not environmentally friendly and is never considered as an organic method of control.

andquot;Integrated Pest Management is the coordinated use of pest and environmental information along with available pest control methods, including cultural, biological, genetic and chemical methods, to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environmentandquot;. (Proceedings of the National Integrated Pest Management Forum. 1992. American Farmland Trust)

Integrated Pest Management stresses the use of complementary methods of pest control such as the introduction of natural predators. This method of pest control is much more ecologically sound than relying on chemical methods.

The first step in pest control is to identify the problem. Particularly when plants are involved, the problem may involve poor growing conditions instead of an attack from an invasive pest. Sometimes identifying the pest is obvious, if you see a mouse scurrying across the floor it is obvious you have need for pest control. The next step is to identify how serious the infestation is, or is this just one mouse that has found its way into your home, or is there a family of mice that has taken up habitation in your home. One mouse can often easily be eradicated using a mouse trap or possibly the family cat. However if you have a large infestation of mice, you may need to resort to stronger chemical methods or find it necessary to hire a professional exterminator to rid your home of the pest problem. <bio>For more information on pest control visit Pest Control Site. http://www.pestcontrolsite.info </bio>

Choosing organic baby products is a more and more popular option for new parents. Every parents wants to provide the best possible products to use for their baby's comfort and health. Organic baby products have the advantage of reduced or eliminated allergens, carcinogens and other irritants. For a newborn infant with sensitive skin, anything that can be done to reduce exposure to such substances will provide more comfort for the child and less danger of exposure to health compromising ingredients in the products used every day. Now, parents have the choice of selecting products that are specially formulated to be free of harmful substances.

What makes it Organic?

Organic baby products are considered to be so when they are created, produced or manufactured without relying upon chemicals such as fertilizers, chemical washes and other substances. When considering the purchase of organic baby products, you need to read the labels carefully. Not every item that says organic is actually free of man-made materials. However, for items that are truly organic, the results are products that are free of negative components and ingredients. Because of their purity, these products are recommended over the standard run of products and may contain harmful ingredients.

Bedding and Clothing

Baby bedding and baby clothing are another popular category of organic baby products . Baby bedding doesn't contain any chemical dyes or other irritants for baby's skin. Baby bedding is made of all organic materials such as cotton, grown without pesticides, silk and wool. Other organic baby products in clothing designs usually have soft natural colors such as oatmeal, carrot, and chocolate. Since there are no pesticides used in the growth of the materials and no chemicals used in the production, there is little likelihood of skin irritation or breathing difficulties or other health problems as the baby grows older.

Toys

Organic baby products in the category of toys are becoming more popular also, as parents realize the benefits of simple, non toxic playthings for babies. Because these baby toys contain no chemicals, there is no concern about the baby ingesting anything harmful while chewing on the toy. Babies explore by tasting, feeling and seeing the world around them and organic baby products allows them to do so without placing them in danger of carcinogens or irritants. When you, as a parent can give your child safe toys, while at the same time improving the environment, it's a hard combination to beat.

Why go Organic?

Organic baby products are a great idea for all of the above reasons individually, but they are a positive step for people of this generation to hand on to the future generations. Reducing dependence upon non-renewable products; limiting the amount of chemical pollutions in the soil and in lakes and waterways, and providing clean air is the result of producing and purchasing organic baby products . These products are good for the individual and good for the planet as well. You won't have a problem with your health or the health of your child when you reduce the exposure to harmful aspects of the environment.<bio>Pure and Honest Kids is proud to offer Organic Baby Products!
Chemical peels continue to be a popular offering among those doctors and businesses that provide different types of cosmetic surgery. If you are considering cosmetic surgery to remove excess facial skin and wrinkles, being educated about chemical peels can help in determining which method may be best for you. Chemical peels follow specific procedures and end up with specific results, all which will help you to eliminate lines and wrinkles from your face. In the past chemical peels were often used as a method for eradicating lines and wrinkles.

With the emergence of cosmetic surgery, this method has reemerged as a way to aid in reforming the face. If you have furrows, wrinkles or sagging skin on your face, a chemical peel can help to remove your problem areas and make you look younger. Chemical peels will be guaranteed to make you look and feel cosmetically better.

Chemical peels are conducted by applying a layer of chemicals in order to remove the extra layers of skin that are on your face. This excess skin is usually the cause of wrinkles and lines that appear as you age. When you get a chemical peel, the chemicals will go into the wrinkles and furrows that have formed and remove the excess skin that has become layered in these areas. Chemical peels are also known to aid the skin in the production of collagen, which will keep you looking younger. Various types of chemical peels all differing in strength are used by doctors. Normally chemical peels are made up of a combination of chemicals such as phenol and croton oil. Chemical concentrates are used in conjunction with others, orin varying strength, depending on what strength is necessary. The strength of the peel also depends on where it is placed on the face. Some areas will have a greater number of skin layers than others. Additionally, a person may decide to have a chemical peel as well as a face-lift when they are evaluating available cosmetic procedures.

If you make the decision to get a chemical peel, you will need to allow three to seven days for recovery due to the strength of the chemicals. It is also necessary to stay out of direct sunlight for three months while the skin cells are recovering. You should also expect to have anesthesia administered during the procedure and you may need to remain in the vicinity for a few hours after the surgery to be sure you have suffered no side affects.

If you are examining cosmetic surgery for the reduction of wrinkles and extra skin on your face, then you should also consider a chemical peel. This specific treatment will provide you with younger-looking face absent of the wrinkles or furrows that have formed with age. Being educated about what a chemical peel can do for you is the first step to a younger-looking face. <bio>Mary Brown contributes to several web sites, most recently http://parip.com and http://fotid.com </bio>

The difference is that organic lawns are free of the harmful pesticides, herbicides, and commercial fertilizers that can pose a threat to the environment, pets, and even humans.

Organic methods provide a safe, effective, responsible alternative to using pesticides and other chemicals for successful growth, control and maintenance. Combining advanced organic products with traditional gardening techniques, organic lawn care can be a relatively easy and incredibly rewarding way to support a truly healthy, vibrantly green lawn.

Organic Fertilizer To realize your goal of having a thriving lawn with green grass all around, your first step is to ensure that the soil in which the grass will grow is healthy. While some homeowners choose to use chemical fertilizers, these products can have future adverse effects on soil health. Those who practice natural lawn care will choose an organic fertilizer instead of a commercial product. Lawns benefit from the slow-release effect of organic fertilizers, which provide vital nutrients without the risk of burning or otherwise harming the grasses.

Because organic fertilizers are made of natural products, they help to support the health and vitality of both the grass and soil, lengthening and strengthening grass roots, and helping to deter pests and diseases.

Seaweed A traditional organic lawn care favorite known for its beneficial properties is seaweed. Loaded with trace elements like zinc, magnesium and iron, regular seaweed applications can help support plant health and root development. Additionally, these trace elements can help fight off fungal diseases. Aside from being extremely beneficial to the health of your lawn, seaweed is also quite inexpensive. Bathing your lawn and garden with liquid seaweed is truly affordable way to support your beautiful organic lawn. Experts recommend that you apply seaweed at least once per month, but even less frequent applications will produce beneficial results.

Water Early and Deeply Grass, like most living things, needs water in order to thrive. Without water, grass will whither, turn brown, and eventually die. A healthy and productive watering session involves more than sprinkling a few drops of water here and there, or hosing down the entire area. Practicing organic lawn care requires that you give your grass about one inch of water once per week. Light, frequent sprinklings will encourage the shallow roots that grasses have. Water as early as possible to give the lawn and garden a healthy start to the day. If you wait until the afternoon or evening, the lawn may develop a fungal invasion due to insufficient evaporation. Finally, be thorough in your watering to avoid brown patches and wasted water.

Practice organic lawn care as an alternative to applying chemical fertilizers and pesticides. You'll find that natural methods can be easier and more cost efficient, while providing the lush, green lawn you desire. Best of all, the environment will be able to breathe a little easier. <bio>Mary Johnson writes for several web sites, including http://tobud.com and http://home-blog.com </bio>
