Internet radio is occasionally an overlooked feature of the Internet. The act of broadcasting music over the Internet in this way is referred to as streaming music and there are many stations that offer streaming over the Internet. You will often find that your favorite terrestrial station can be found online, but there are just as many radio stations that are transmitted solely over the Internet. One of the biggest benefits of Internet radio is that the data is transmitted over the Internet making it possible to listen to radio stations from all over the world. Expatriates find this particularly beneficial.

Similarly, though, it is also cheaper to produce music over the Internet and this means that smaller stations with a smaller fan base than mainstream radio requires are able to run their own radio station. This makes it perfect for those who like particular genres of music to find exactly what they are looking for.

Internet Talk Radio was the first ever Internet radio service and was established in 1993 and in 1995 the first radio service published only on the Internet was introduced -- Radio HK. Since then the number of stations opening on the Internet has increased dramatically. Peercasting, or P2P technology, makes it even easier to start an Internet radio station so it is likely that there will be even more stations in the near future.

Internet radio is perfect for people in small towns that are monopolized by only two or three radio stations and are forced to listen to one playlist of songs over and over. With internet radio the possibility of gaining access to music that a person likes is greatly increased.

Whether you are looking for radio broadcasts from countries miles away or you want to listen to one particular genre of music you can be virtually assured of finding a station that caters to your needs. You can even find chat stations that deal with one particular topic. The quality of sound and the quality of the programs distributed are both excellent. If you haven't tried Internet Radio before, you should try it now. About The Author: Lavinia Snider is the editor of internet Radio Guide. Find out everything about internet radio.
How does satellite radio work? To understand how satellite radio works you must first understand how analog radio works. Analog radio works by broadcasting the radio frequency to local transmitters and then on to the listener. Satellite radio works similarly but instead of using stationary transmitters with limited range to broadcast their media to the people, they use mobile Satellites.

Satellites are equipment that orbit the earth and can pick up and transmit signals globally instead of just in a limited area. In the satellite radio category a satellite bounces the transmitted radio frequency off of the satellite and out to the millions of satellite radio listeners around the world. This has increased the satellite radio industry and has made satellite radio a staple media avenue in our everyday lives. Does this help you to understand the question of how does satellite radio work?

A user such as myself or you, who is interested in satellite radio purchases a satellite radio device whether it be stationary or portable, we purchase the desired satellite radio service from whichever service provider offers us the best variety of programming. Once the subscription to this service is established, the device is programmed into a database of devices that are allowed to receive specific radio transmissions from specific satellites. This entry into the database then sends a signal to the device to decrypt satellite frequencies, providing the user with audible satellite radio reception. This explains the question of how does satellite radio work?

Many service providers may use different marketing gimmicks to gain a customer base, claiming to have better coverage or what not. When it comes down to it, The only difference which could be considered is the limitations put on the satellite radio by the databases and what programs and filters any individual service provider may be using to limit the access their customers have to the satellite radio feed. Service providers may offer special features, or special programming which is solely controlled by their databases and the servers they use to transmit the satellite radio feed. You rarely hear of a service provider explaining to the customer the answer to the question of how does satellite radio work?

If a user fails to pay for their subscription to the satellite radio feed, just as with any utility nowadays, the service provider may then send a signal to the device, removing its rights to decrypt satellite radio transmissions. Many technologies in the past, prior to the radio technology have used satellites to widen the spectrum of their services, such as telecommunications such as cell phones. The principal of each service is relatively the same in the fact that a person uses a device such as a satellite radio, or cell phone, to request a transmission through a service provider's database. If the subscription is paid for the transmission is allowed from the satellite to the user giving us satellite capable radio devices. I hope I have helped answer the question how does satellite radio work? <bio>Satellite Radio HQ http://satellite-radio-hq.com/ talks about the history of satellite radio, the equipment you'll need, the satellite radio channels you can receive and much more. </bio>

Satellite Radio has become a very popular alternative to broadcast radio since its first release. It did take a while for the two competitors of satellite radio, Sirius and XM, to begin gaining customers. Equipment was expensive and bulky. There is also a monthly fee for the service, where broadcast radio is free. Satellite does have a few advantages against broadcast that helped it gain momentum more each year. There are very few channels on satellite radio that have commercials. This is very similar to premium cable television like HBO or Showtime...they cost extra but have no commercials. Another great feature Satellite Radio offers is quality that you cannot find in broadcast radio. Satellite radio is a digital signal that sounds cleaner and has virtually no static because with digital signals you either have close to full quality or nothing at all. Satellite also offers coast to coast coverage so you do not have to search for a local station when you travel.

Recent technology moves have helped the receiver end of satellite radio tremendously. Car manufacturers now offer satellite equipment built in to new cars so that there is nothing to buy, just the monthly service fee. Some car companies like GMC only offer XM capability, but many companies offer you to choose either but not both. Car manufacturers also offer much more high end stereos that can utilize the benefits of a digital signal. They use this as a sales pitch to show how good their stereos really are.

Satellite does have new competition that is broadcast for free like analog radio. HD Radio will be broadcast by many local stations in the near future offering better quality than satellite radio. This is much like television stations that broadcast HD TV locally. There are still commercials, but clear sound and music information about artists is available by any HD Radio equipped stereo. Only the future will tell if people are willing to shell out the dough to avoid commercials. <bio>Find the latest information and more at http://all-satellite-radio.info/ </bio>

As time goes by and technology grows and changes to suit the needs of people we have seen an increase in the need for portability in media. People are on the go and require more portability in their Radios. Science and Technology has grown with the demand of the people. This demand has bred Portable Satellite Radios.

Portable Satellite Radio allows a person to listen to various genres of music at any given time, on demand, via Satellite technology. Where once we had Cassette tape walkman devices, then Compact Disc walkman devices we now have the capability to take our music with us wherever we go without being limited to the radio stations in our local vicinity. This means there is no longer a boundary of radio signal that is limited to your town or city. Now you can hear feeds that take place all over the nation, without having to wait for it to be syndicated and picked up by your local radio station.

There are many different Portable Satellite Radio providers such as XM, Sirius Radio and many others. These services are fee based and provide users with a variety of different genres of music for a monthly service charge. This allows the Portable Satellite Radio user to be able to travel with his or her musical selections but not limit them to a play list of music that is made up of only a few songs.

Not only is there a wide variety of music on Portable Satellite Radio. There are also many other types of media such as the national news and Talk Radio. As the Portable Satellite Radio technologies took off shock jock Howard Stern made the switch from normal syndicate radio to Portable Satellite Radio. Many other radio personalities quickly followed suit.

The reason behind the boom of radio personalities making the switch from normal analog radio to Portable Satellite Radio is that it gave them the freedom from some of the FCC restrictions about freedom of speech. Unlike analog radio the FCC doesn't control as strictly Portable Satellite Radio feeds. Portable Satellite Radio and the boom in the industry also gave radio personalities a broader fan-base. Exposing them to more people who typically may have not heard of them or had the opportunity to enjoy what they bring to the radio.

When looking for a Portable Satellite Radio service you must take into consideration coverage area as well as pricing. What kind of cost will you pay for the convenience of not being bound to limited music and services? Portable Satellite Radio gives you the convenience that is almost necessary in today's fast paced world of technology and media.

Most audio equipment retailers now provide Portable Satellite Radio devices and services. For the most part these devices can be budget-friendly and the monthly service fees reasonable. If you are interested in expanding your musical tastes and are an on-the-go type of person, Portable Satellite Radio may be something you would be interested in. <bio>Satellite Radio HQ http://satellite-radio-hq.com/ talks about the history of satellite radio, the equipment you'll need, the satellite radio channels you can receive and much more. </bio>

Like cable television, Satellite radio is fast becoming a new genre of and unto itself. While not having to endure the same regulations as applied by the FCC in regards to free radio, the broadcasters of satellite radio, like cable television, have more options available to them and are able to offer a wider variety of programming as a direct result.

Satellite radio is the cable television of the radio broadcasting world. People can buy a satellite radio subscription in much the same manner that they would subscribe to cable television. The subscription includes various types of radio broadcasting not otherwise available to the listener. These usually include more adult-oriented radio broadcasting since the FCC does not regulate the industry in the same manner that they do for the free radio airwaves.

Since people are paying for the privilege of listening, and satellite radio is a buyer's market, the wide selection of broadcast media that is available are regulated mostly by what the listeners want and what they are willing to pay for. While satellite radio may not be a viable alternative for everyone, it does offer more listening opportunities for those people who are willing to pay for it. Satellite radio subscriptions vary in cost, but all things being equal, the subscription fees are not at all unattractive when the broad spectrum of radio programming is compared to what limited choices are available without satellite radio.

There are also still some limitations in the availability of satellite radio. While these areas are in steady decline as satellite radio listeners increase in numbers, there are still voids in the market where it is not yet financially feasible to install satellite radio options. It is best to check for the availability of satellite radio before purchasing any satellite ready receivers.

Satellite radio receivers vary in all manner of shape, style and output range and are available to fit the needs of most any satellite radio listener. Deciding which one is best for any given use will require the purchaser to do a little research into satellite radio and what local options are available, then adjusted according to the personal preferences of the listener.

While the advent of Satellite radio technology is seen as a new path to freedom for some and a road to decline for others, the satellite radio of today looks like it is here to stay. If satellite radio is available in your area, it can be a worthy investment. Satellite radio really does offer many options not available to the regular radio listener. <bio>Satellite Radio HQ http://satellite-radio-hq.com/ talks about the history of satellite radio, the equipment you'll need, the satellite radio channels you can receive and much more. </bio>

The best thing about the satellite radio is that you get about seventy channels of music, commercial free. The consumers keep the radio on air not commercials and the range of channels varies from opera to rap, from blues to dance music and much more.

Another great feature of this radio is the absence of static. >From East coast to West Coast and all over the US, you will get a clear signal where ever you are.

In addition, if you have just heard a song and you want to know the name of it, simply look at the receiver display. It will tell you the name, the artist, what channel you are listening to, and what program it is.

Satellite radio is completely free from censors. Howard Stern can put a program on air as is, without interference. You can hear music like hip hop without any interruptions.

The radio service provides local weather and traffic conditions. In big cities, there are more detailed forecasts. In addition, if there is a national crisis, unlike regular radio stations that go blank, satellite radio will be able to provide information. You may listen to the radio on your computer.

Most people mistakenly think regular radio is free, but it isn't. You are forced to listen to sections of annoying commercials in exchange for music. With a satellite radio subscription, of about thirteen dollars, you get a clear reception, you get channels of music you can listen to no matter where you are and you can listen to exactly what you want.

This is perfect for a person who travels throughout the US. You don't have to worry about static and you don't have to fiddle around with the radio every time you leave a specific area. Soon XM and Sirrus will provide the same service for Video Channels. Their subscribers would be able to enjoy great quality, a clear reception and commercial and censor free viewing. <bio>Jason Allen is a staff writer at http://www.wireless-times.com and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including http://www.entertainment-digest.com. </bio>

CB radio offers a short-range communication system that can be used for business as well as hobby purposes. One need not have any technical qualifications to use it. CB radio service generally doesn't interfere with other radio signals. This is normally accomplished through frequency regulations adopted by the government. Considering the safety aspects, many governments have made it mandatory to have a license for operating a CB radio.

The signals sent into the air do not stop at the borders; therefore, every country should have the proper rules set up for planning and managing the radio signals so that one does not interfere with another. If this fails, the CB radio service is useless. Therefore, the installation and use of CB radios should by done with someone with a valid license, preferably one issued by a government agency. The agency manages the radio signal spectrum in such a manner that they are available to those who need them.

In the UK, the agency that regulates the use of CB radio is a subdivision of the department of trade and industry. They manage the CB radio spectrum of the UK both nationally and internationally. CB radios can be used only with a valid license or under the supervision of a license holder. OAP networks, Girls Guides and Scouts are exempted from having a license. The license is issued by the radio-licensing center in the UK. Other countries have other agencies that issue CB radio licenses.

As noted above, the user either should have a valid license to operate or be under the supervision of a license holder. Supervision by a licensee stipulates that both the licensee and the non-license holder should be in close proximity. However, genuine cases of group operations are exempt from direct supervision. Normally, the license is issued in the name of the CB radio license holder. Individuals under the age of 14 are not issued a license.

A license is still required for the reception of CB signals, even without transmission. Walkie-talkies are exempted from licensing, but they do need to conform to the agency directives on equipment. Taxi drivers should be licensed individually and the taxi company must comply with all the rules of CB radio service. Normally the license is valid for one year, after which it must be renewed for further use. If caught using the license for illegal activity, the agency may cancel the license. <bio>http://www.information-finers.com http://www.auto-tips-tools.com </bio>

The introduction of satellite radio has been one of the biggest innovations in recent FM broadcasting history. This radio signal can be heard at a distances of thirty five thousand kilometers and beyond. That is more that twenty two miles with a clear reception, no static and more than one hundred stations to listen to. The inception of this concept was 1992 when the Federal Communications Commissions gave up the S band on the radio wave spectrum (2.3 GHz) to Digital Audio Radio Service. The companies that were initially given a license to broadcast on this spectrum were XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio. Currently, there are three satellite radio services broadcasting around the world: XM and Sirius in North America and WorldSpace in Europe, Asia and Africa.

The three satellite radio companies each have a different system for broadcasting their signals. This means that a customer would end up buying specific equipment depending on what company they subscribe to. There are three parts to a satellite radio system: the ground repeaters, the satellites and the radio receivers. The XM satellite radio has satellites that are geographically located above the equator at all times. To combat the issue of obstacles such as hills, bridges and buildings, the XM radio service has a network of repeaters. These are antennas that get the signal from the satellites and transmit it to the subscriber's radio. The Sirrus radio service is set up a little differently. The satellites are elliptical in structure and they orbit the Earth. Because these satellites are on a higher level, the signal is usually clear and there is no need to have quite as many repeaters.

The satellite radio programmers are able to choose what music or program to fill air time. Many use CD's or have musicians come in to perform live. This sound is transmitted via a digital format. The signal is encoded by the satellite and then sent to the repeater antennae. The repeater moves it along to the subscriber's radio which decodes the signal and plays the sound. Satellite radio also utilizes digital compression which is a method of reducing a set amount of information into a bandwidth using complex algorithms. If you are a subscriber, you will have to purchase the correct equipment to get the signal.

The amount of people who subscribe to satellite radio has grown due to the improvements made to the technology. The appeal of the radio station has always been the fact that the radio doesn't depend on advertising to pay the bills, therefore the programs available are commercial free. <bio>Jason Allen is a staff writer at http://www.wireless-times.com and is an occasional contributor to several other websites, including http://www.entertainment-digest.com. </bio>

Satellite car radio is a growing industry in today's market place. Most common car audio manufacturers have adapted their products to include satellite car radio services. This allows drivers a wider range of music for their listening pleasure making the travel place a much more entertaining place to be.

When it comes to the dreariness and monotony of the daily commute for those employed individuals, satellite car radio can offer a fresh breath of air with their wide variety of entertainment with the convenience of being mobile. Many morning show personalities have opted to take the satellite radio route as opposed to limiting themselves to syndication by normal radio station broadcasters. Satellite car radio has given the on-air personalities a wider range of listeners during the daily commute.

Because of the nature of today's workplace and the face-paced world around us, the need to be able to have variety while on the go has caused a boom in the satellite car radio industry spawning service providers such as Sirius and XM radio along with many not so well known providers of satellite radio service. This has put a drive (no pun intended) into car audio manufacturers to make their products more of satellite car radio instead of the normal car audio systems that limit buyers to local analog radio transmissions, compact disc, and cassette capabilities.

With technologies today growing and expanding at the rate they are, the industry has grown leaps and bounds not only in the forms of media car audio equipment will accept but integrating things from our every day lives such as Mp3 capabilities, and Satellite capabilities. There are very few manufactures now that do not offer some form of satellite car radio. Your typical car stereos and the radio capabilities have been far exceeded and become a profitable market for satellite providers.

These days when you are shopping for car audio systems, you can find satellite car radio units for near as close of cost as you can your typical car audio systems with standard analog capabilities. Why wouldn't you go for a satellite car radio instead of your plain run of the mill car stereo? When for only a few pennies on the dollar more you can in with the times and become a listener of a satellite car radio, giving you more choice when you want it, with the technologies of today's leading industry of satellite technologies.

With all of the options you have in today's car audio industry I see no reason to go with your standard car radio options and not give in to the growing demand of satellite car radio. Not only is it and advantage cost-wise but it also targets every genre of music, news, and talk radio you could think of. If you are looking to get out of the boredom of your daily commute, or just looking to appease the family when going on vacation I would strongly recommend that you look into satellite car radio as a great alternative for your listening needs. <bio>Satellite Radio HQ http://satellite-radio-hq.com/ talks about the history of satellite radio, the equipment you'll need, the satellite radio channels you can receive and much more. </bio>

Ham radio is often referred to as amateur radio and is a hobby that is enjoyed by millions of individuals across the globe. A ham radio operator uses a two-way radio to broadcast with other amateurs for the purpose of entertainment, public service or other venture.

The use of ham radio may actually help to save lives as operators often support the local community with emergency and disaster communications. On a recreational basis, ham radio can help to increase an individual's self awareness of electronics, the operations of radio and communication. In addition, ham radio is often used to showcase entertainment for listeners and may even help to launch a new career for an amateur.

Ham radio was once confined to an actual radio, but the progression of the world wide web has changed the way that people both listen and communicate via radio. In fact, there are a number of radio stations that actively communicate with listeners online. This activity paved the way for ham radio to reach a broad audience via the internet. While some simply use ham radio as a way to talk with friends, meet new people who share common interest and discuss topics that are relevant to a specific idea, others regularly use ham radio to send and receive emergency notifications relating to severe weather, emergency situations, disaster relief and other forms of scenarios that call for fast action that are of interest to the public.

Like traditional radios, ham radio equipment is often portable enough to accompany the operator while on vacation. In order to use ham radio, individuals must be licensed and cannot successfully travel with the equipment otherwise. The only way that an individual can become licensed to operate ham radio is to successfully pass an exam, which is created to confirm the individual's knowledge and understanding of key radio concepts. Unlike CB radio, individuals broadcasting on ham radio must possess a valid license to do so.

The best way to learn about ham radio operator licensing is to stop by a local club and speak with the owner. He/she will be able to direct most hopeful operators in the right direction. Once licensed, individuals will gain additional information on regulations and rules surrounding ham radio use and broadcasting. In addition, ham radio broadcasting equipment will be made available to licensed amateurs and can be found at a variety of internet specialty stores. <bio>To find out more about ham radio, please visit our website at http://www.hamradioguide.info .
CB radio service was first begun in United Kingdom sometime in the 1970's. There were a few illegal users around them, and, due to a sudden spur in the growth of illegal users, CB radio service was legalized in 1981. The early illegal users imported the equipment from United States. After legalization, the UK government stamped all the approved equipment with two logos: CB934/81 or CB27/81. A license was required to operate CB radios, a document that could be obtained from the post office. But that was then, in 2004, licensing was scrapped.

Background

CB radio usage started with truck drivers who imported the equipment from the U.S. and operated it illegally. Since the import was from the United States, the 27 MHz systems were popular. The craze for CB radios was so immense that engineering experts started converting radiotelephony devices to operate on the 27MHz band. The number of CB radio users grew by the day, and the radio regulatory department started prosecuting all illegal users; the number was so huge, however, that the office found it difficult to track down all of us. CB radio clubs that demanded legalization of CB radio use followed this craze. Finally, the government legalized two frequency bands, 27MHz and 934 MHz.

Bands Legalized in the United Kingdom

In 1981, the UK government legalized three frequency bands: the 26.965 to 27.405 MHz band with 40 channels, the 27.6 to 27.99MHz band with 40 channels, and the 934 MHz band with 20 channels. Both frequency bands use frequency modulation of the FM status. The 27MHz channel was noisy, while the quality was far superior in 934 MHz UHF band. Initially, the number of CB radio operators in the 934 MHz band was less, but once antenna restrictions were removed and quality equipment was available, the numbers grew. The 934 MHz was later discontinued due to limited use. The general rule for antennas is that they should be vertical and omni-directional, and should not exceed 5 feet in height.

Popular CB Radio Channels in the United Kingdom

Three CB radio channels are popular in UK: Channel 9, which is used for emergency calling, channel 14, which is operated for general calling and channel 19 (or the truckers channel), which is widely used by truckers.

CB Radio Regulating Agency in the UK

The CB radio service operation in the UK is regulated by UK RandTTE Regulations organization. The agency is a subdivision of the Department of Trade and Industry. They manage and plan the CB radio service spectrum both at an international and national level. All CB radio equipment has to comply with the UK radio interface directives, but the UK accepts other country's CEPT-approved equipments for CB radio service. The license should be a valid one issued by that country. <bio>http://www.information-finers.com http://www.auto-tips-tools.com </bio>

Amateur radio (also called ham radio) is a hobby enjoyed by about 3 million people throughout the world and over 600,000 in the USA alone. It is about communications and the multiple ways of communicating through radio waves.

What most people do not know about this hobby and the people that are operators is that they are one of the most used groups as means of emergency communication, when other conventional means of communications fail, in a disaster situation for example.

Local communications is one of the first things to go away in case of a disaster such as hurricanes or tornadoes. Phones and electricity go down and the only thing left is amateur radio operators that can operate from a battery and a piece of wire for an antenna.

These operators have networks set up all over the world that can be immediately activated and used to coordinate disaster relief activities. Recent examples include the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, when amateurs worked weeks side by side with rescue crews supplying communications.

Amateur operators were also involved this last year in all the hurricanes that we had all over the world. They have been watching and reporting the advance of the storms, setting up nets to pass traffic for rescue groups as well as passing health and welfare traffic to people trying the get in touch with relatives in the stricken area. They carry a message out to someone that says we are ok and we are alive and that is always great.

The National Weather Service might have great radars, but a radar can't see the storms like human eyes can. Just ask someone that works for the weather service about the role of radio operators and you will get one answer- they are the "eyes" of the National Weather Service. They are on duty any time that there are storms in the area. Any time of day and night these people are watching storms and reporting what they see.

Their accurate reports can be used immediately by the weather service and further by the local radio and TV stations which broadcast the reported data to the public.

Amateur radio operators are saving thousands of lives each year, yet this gets almost no recognition. And the kicker is that their service is at no cost to the public. As mentioned before, amateur radio is a personal hobby; this means the operators buy all their own radio equipment.

And they use it for public safety. Whenever needed to warn the public of danger.

Are they heroes? Think about it. <bio>My name is Harry.
Frequency Considerations for Recreational 2 Way Radios

If you are in the market for 2 way radios for personal use, you have an immediate and important choice to make: What radio frequency band do you require?

Frequency! 2 way radios obviously utilize 'wireless' communication methods so when using a 2 way radio you are transmitting and sending your message through the air -- the same air that is currently carrying television signals, commercial radio signals, Ham radio signals and literally thousands of signals from other private 2 way radios. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has the job of controlling all of these communication signals so they don't run into each other; to accomplish this they have reserved frequency bands for use by certain types of communication (signal sending) devices. There are two frequency bands in use for recreational 2 way radios, these are called Family Radio Service (FRS) and General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS).

In 1996, the FCC reserved a set of radio frequencies they called the Family Radio Service (FRS) band, specifically for short-range 2 way radios (radios that operate no more than 2 miles away from each other) with a small power output (up to 500 milliwatts or one-half watt).

About fifty years before the FCC created the FRS band they had reserved a set of frequencies for higher power 2 way radios that operated over a longer range this is the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) band. The GMRS band is for radios with a power output between one and five watts and a range over 2 miles. The FCC regulates the 2 way radios that operate on the GMRS band and requires users of this type of radio to obtain a license and pay a fee. The GMRS license is good for five years and costs $80.00; the license must be obtained by an adult (the radios operating under the license may be used by minors but only with the licensed adult's knowledge and permission). Go to the FCC's Internet page at: http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/index.htm?job=service_homeandid=general_mobile for more information on GMRS licensing.

When buying 2 way radios, your choice is between a set of radios that operates only on one of these frequency bands or a set of radios that is able to operate on either one of these frequency bands. This determination will obviously have to be made based on the maximum distance the radio users will be from each other. If the radios are to be used within two miles of each other, FRS will be the best (and least expensive) choice. If a greater distance is consistently required, 2 way radios that operate on the GMRS frequency band will be required. If the need for distance is uncertain or if you want the option of occasionally transmitting up to five miles a FRS/GMRS hybrid is the radio set to choose. <bio>http://twowayradioshq.com Find out more about Two Way Radios. </bio>

It looks like satellite radio is here to stay. With the availability of equipment and the benefits the service has to offer, it seems more and more people are choosing to use satellite radio. If you are wondering how satellite radio works, read on.

Satellite radio offers you commercial free radio. No more static, no more interrupted broadcasts; just hour after hour of uninterrupted music. And you won't lose your favorite radio station as you cross the state. But you will have to pay for all this convenience.

Your dependable traditional radio won't work for satellite radio, so you'll need to purchase a new radio and you will need to have it installed (unless you are purchase a portable system). The price of the new radio varies depending on the model you choose. You'll also need to pay an activation fee and a monthly fee.

Think of satellite radio as an extension of cable. For your monthly fee you'll get edgier and less censored programming, innovative programming, more channels, and specialty channels. As an added convenience, while you're listening to the music you'll see the name of the song and the artist name displayed which means no more confusion about whose song is playing.

Back in 1992 the FCC allocated the 2.3 GHz or S band for nationwide broadcasting of satellite based DARS. Four companies applied for licensing and two were granted licenses. The two that were granted licenses were Sirius and XM. Both already had satellites in orbit.

They operate by beaming their programming to their satellite, which then transmits the signal to the ground. Your satellite radio then picks up the channel you have selected to listen to.

For listeners that live in urban areas satellite signals can become interrupted, so the satellite providers also beam the signal to ground repeaters to ensure that doesn't happen.

Sirius was the first to offer commercial free programming on its music channels, but both Siruis and XM now have commercial free programming. Both are competitively priced. Currently, XM offers over 160 commercial free channels. Sirius has over 125 commercial free channels.

The special programming that Siruis and XM carry is the deciding factor of which service to choose for many people. Sirius carries NFL football games; XM carries college games. XM carries NASCAR races; Siruis has a Playboy channel. Sirius carries Howard Stern; XM carries Oprah.

Satellite radio is no longer the radio of the future. It's the radio of today, and is being chosen over traditional radio programming by more and more people every day. About The Author: Gray Rollins is a featured writer for SatelliteCritique.
My satellite radio is just about the best toys that I bought myself in a long time. No more spending the majority of my driving time switching between stations, with a satellite radio, I can choose exactly what I want, when I want it.

The units that receive the satellite signal in the home are rather limited but the ones for the car, well that's another story. Here are some tips for selecting satellite radio for your car.

Buying an after market radio that has a satellite receiver built in is the easiest way to add satellite radio to your car in my opinion. My husband went the route of adding a simple satellite receiver to his existing radio. The drawback was, not only did it take awhile to install it came out messy.

Aftermarket radios, can be purchased to bring in just the satellite signal, AM/FM radio stations, CD or it can come, as I selected, with all three built in.

When traveling on a trip, I found this was the most convenient as I could keep up with local happenings with my regular radio but when I wanted crystal clear tunes, I had my CD or Satellite radio to choose from.

One of the things that people mistakenly think about satellite radio is that all you have to buy is the monthly subscription to enjoy commercial free satellite radio. The fact is you do have to consider the cost of your subscription AND the cost of your satellite radio AND the cost of a professional installation. In most cases this amount can easily add up to a few hundred dollars.

By far the least expensive way to get started with satellite radio is to add one of those add on radios, like my husband bought. You can buy one for about $100 dollars and although the installation will take some time, it sis nothing that most people can't do themselves.

Some don't require installation at all, all you need is something called the FM modulator to be located near the FM radio in your car, IT will do the rest. This is a great solution if you just want to try satellite radio or if you change cars often.

So you can get started for as little as $100 dollars but for a mid to top of the line radio, expect to pay between $300 and $500 plus installation, and worth every penny! <bio>Holly Dodd writes for and publishes a number of consumer oriented websites like: http://www.My-Satellite-Radio-Review.info, she can also be found at http://www.blog.freeofferguide.com </bio>

If you're not familiar with HD Radio, it's the hot digital technology that's being pushed by radio broadcasters as the next big thing and the savior of terrestrial radio.

The Good

First, the good news. HD Radio does sound better than regular radio. In fact, HD AM sounds almost as good as FM radio, and FM sounds almost as bright, clear and interference free as if you were listening to a CD. And because HD is digital, broadcasters can squeeze more signals into the same frequency. This allows them to broadcast different programs on what they're calling HD2 channels. For example, an oldies station could program contemporary CandW on its normal frequency, and old-time CandW on its HD2 channel.

More good news is that fact that, depending on who you believe, there are now either 1,300 to1,500 stations in the U.S. that are broadcasting HD Radio.

The difference? It's that he HD Radio Alliance claims there are 1,500 HD stations, but the FCC has only 1,300 licenses on file.

The bad news

While HD Radio may sound great and while there at least 1,300 stations broadcasting HD Radio, you can't hear them. That is, not unless you purchase an HD radio. And HD radios tend to be expensive. There is only one, inexpensive, entry-level tabletop available, the Radiosophy HD100 at $99.95. The next step up is RadioShack's Accurian HD Radio, which usually sells for about $199 and a Sony unit at $199.95. Beyond that, there is the Sangean HDR-1 with a manufacturer's suggested retail of $249, and then it's pretty much into the stratosphere of $300-plus.

Want HD radio in your car? The situation there is even worse. There are very few HD car radios available and most of them are only tuners and must be connected to your existing factory radio =96 an ugly solution at best.

The ugliest part of th HD2 channels is that the programming =96at least so far =96 is hardly good enough or creative enough to warrant buying a HD radio.

What makes it ugly is that the broadcaster could be using HD2 channels to do something really exciting as broadcasters have in Great Britain, where digital radio has just skyrocketed. Unfortunately, here in the U.S., most broadcasters have chosen to use their HD2 channels as just "variations on a theme," or variations of their regular programming (see rock station example, above).

So, what's the future of HD Radio? At this point, it doesn't seem great, especially when you compare it to satellite and Internet radio. But as they used to say, "stay tuned for more" because it could get brighter. <bio>Douglas Hanna is the editor and publisher of the highly popular website, http://www.hd-radio-home.com, which he believes is the Internet's number one site for fair and balanced news about HD radio.
Sirius Satellite Radio is certainly here to stay. When you have a Sirius satellite radio receiver you can listen to whatever you want wherever you go. There is a Sirius satellite receiver to meet the needs of everyone, whether you want one for your home, your office, your car, your boat, or your RV. There's a lot of buzz right now about satellite radio. With the introduction of XM and Sirius the new satellite radio broadcasts will give local broadcast radio a run for their money. If you've been thinking about buying an XM or Sirius Radio, now might be a good time to make that purchase as the cost of these radios is now at the lowest point ever. The top 2 contenders are Sirius and XM Radio.

Both providers offer high quality, digital programming with over 100 channels to listen to so you can never run out of something good on the radio. As mentioned above, cable started to address those issues, but it's been the advent of satellite technology that has really brought clear digital entertainment to the masses no matter where they live in the US. Satellite radio and TV both broadcast their signal in digital formats rather than analog.

Sirius charges more because they claim to use technology that improves the digital sound even more than XM and they also have given more attention to customer service to address issues that may arrive after the sale. Satellite radio broadcasts are made in digital format, so they are much higher quality than land-based radio. Satellite radio or is a digital and is able to receive signals from just about anywhere which of course has a broader range than normal radio.

With satellite radio you pay a certain subscription fee every month (around $15 or so) to get around 100 music channels broadcast by satellite. All programs are transmitted a satellite and then is beamed to the ground where the satellite radio picks up the signal. None of the channels are pre-recorded and all of them are LIVE stream videos from the fastest servers in their network.

There are several different kinds of music genres. For instance, rock has channels devoted to hard rock, early rock, soft rock, heavy metal, and many more. When using a satellite radio you can have your favorite music broadcasted right into your home or car, with crystal clear digital sound. Some system have a slight delay in the broadcast so if you enter a tunnel you do not loose the signal.

Satellite radios come in many forms including at-home devices and portable players much like Apple's ipod. People that have taken a liking to satellite radio are flocking to their local electronics store looking for a portable satellite radio. Like a full size or car satellite radio a portable satellite radio has all the required equipment to decode the encrypted signal broadcasted by a satellite.

Subscribers to satellite radio will be required to pay a monthly fee. It is subscription based, meaning that you pay a monthly fee for the service.

Subscribers usually have to pay a monthly fee of approximately $9. When purchasing a satellite radio there is usually a small monthly fee, but this will introduce you to a new world of commercial free radio. <bio>David Marc Fishman is the owner of http://www.priceriot.com Priceriot is a new online auction where prices drop as people shop. </bio>

CB radio was promoted for short range communication, whether for business or personal use. In 1958, Class D CB radio service at 27 MHz began, including a band for public use. Requests from truck drivers and others for a cheaper mode of communication led the government to allot 18 channels for CB radio communication. During the 1960's, CB radio service was popular among indicate trade people, such as plumbers and electricians, and transportation services, like taxis and truckers.

The popularity of CB radios during 1970's was mainly due to films, television shows and popular songs. Public service codes that were initially used by police and fire services were allowed to be used for short acknowledgement services. The codes were often used in shortened form, and gradually slang terms developed. The advancement of technology also increased the popularity of CB radio services. The equipment became cheaper and smaller. This gave regular people access to technology that was previously available only to experts. These CB radios were mostly plug-in quartz crystal-controlled and AM only.

CB Radio Service in the United States

In the United States, there were initially 23 CB radio services. During the 1960's, channels were categorized by intra-station and inter-station communications. In the 1970's, channel 9 was designated for use only for emergency purposes. Channel 10 was promoted for use in highway communications, while for general purposes, channel 11 was used. Later, channel 19 was switched to highway communications use.

>From the beginning, CB radio services didn't require licensing, but the use of a call sign was required. Soon, people ignored these basics and started using nicknames, or "handles," as they are popularly known. These handles were primarily used by truck drivers to send road condition or traffic warnings to other truck drivers. There were still many restrictions on antenna size and the distance the signal could be sent, but gradually the call sign regulation was dropped.

In 1973, several groups in the United States campaigned for allocation of frequencies near 220MHz for Class E band services. Although initially opposed, the government sponsored the Multi-use Radio Service in the 1980's, Family Radio Service, and General Mobile Radio Service.

CB Radio Service in Australia and Britain

CB radio service was a world-wide phenomenon during the 1970's and 1980's. In Great Britain, CB radio service was finally legalized in 1981. In Australia, CB radio services began in the 1960's when American walkie-talkies became available at selected outlets. The 27 MHz was intended to be temporary, with the users required to move to the UHF band within five years, but due to its popularity the Australian government included all the 40 channels in the band.

At present, CB radios have lost many users due to the presence of mobile communication services and the popularity of the Internet, but it remains widely used on American highways and, most likely, always will. <bio>http://www.information-finers.com http://www.auto-tips-tools.com </bio>

What are satellite radio antennas and what are their uses? This is the question that many people ask themselves when they hear about satellite radio antennas. As you read this article you will get an idea on what a satellite radio antenna is. Also you will learn what are their uses, functions and a lot of great pointers on where to buy one, what types are there and how to take care of it.

In order for you to listen and watch your programs you need a satellite radio antenna. This allows the module that you are using to communicate with its home base; the home base includes all of the programs and it allows you to choose what you would like to view. This all sounds like something out of a sci fi movie, but it is not. Your television, radio, even your computer has a satellite radio antenna.

Now that you know what satellite radio antennas are here are some of their main functions and uses. When you turn on your satellite in order for you to watch any of your programs on it the main thing needed is the satellite radio antenna. It allows the base (your PSP) to communicate with the main base of the whole entire system. This gives you the ability to either listen to your music or watch your programs, which ever you may choose.

Many people wonder where they can buy satellite radio antennas. You may buy one in your local hardware store. There is no specific company you should purchase your antenna from because different companies make different types of these mechanisms.

The different types usually go based on the use of the satellite radio antennas. You may be buying it for your car, bike, and stereo system or maybe even just for your house. They all have the same functions and every company that makes them to does their best to suit you and all of your needs.

The best way you can take care of you satellite radio antenna is to keep it out of water, as we all know electricity and water are not what we could call the greatest of friends. Also, these should be kept out of the reach of any young children; if yours is already inside of something you should make sure that it stays in there but if not any young child can swallow it and cause much harm. If this does happen please alert the police department as quickly as you can.

Now that you know what satellite radio antennas are, their functions, where to buy one and how to care for it you are ready to buy your own. Always keep in mind that depending on what size and type of a satellite radio antenna will vary in its price range. If you buy something for cheap it won't last too long but you did not spend that much money on it, but if you buy something expensive it will last longer even if you did spend that extra hundred dollars on it. <bio>http://satellite-radio-hq.com/ Satellite Radio HQ talks about the history of satellite radio, the equipment you'll need, the satellite radio channels you can receive and much more. </bio>

Americans are slowly changing the way that they listen to music. Instead of listening to limited radio stations that are sometimes filled with commercials, people are now getting their music through satellite radio.

Sirius and XM are the top suppliers of satellite radio. To listen to this amazing, commercial free programming all listeners will need a satellite radio player. If you are interested in making the switch from traditional radio programming to satellite radio then you have four options when it comes to selecting a player.

(1) Satellite Radio Players for the Car

When you are in your car, how often do you turn the radio on? Since the majority of Americans listen to music when they are in their vehicle, satellite radio players for the car are always in demand. Satellite radio players that are designed for cars often come in two varieties. There are some players that can be inserted where a traditional car radio goes. These players would require a mounting plate. Circle or other shaped players can be mounted on the dashboard or the ceiling of vehicle.

The average price for satellite radio players designed for the car is between $70 and $150.

(2) Portable Satellite Radio Players

In addition to satellite radio, other advancements in music include Ipods and MP3 players. These products are popular because they are portable. One thing that many individuals, maybe even yourself included, do not know about satellite radios is that some of them are also portable. These portable players are most commonly used when exercising or traveling on foot.

The average price for a portable satellite radio is between $200 and $350.

(3) Home-based Satellite Radio Players

Satellite radio players that are designed for home are similar to the above mentioned players; however, they are often stationary. Home-based satellite radios come in a wide variety of different designs. The different design options make it possible to match a player with a particular home décor color or style. Due to the size of most home satellite radios, they are often unable to be used in vehicles or as portable players.

The average price for a home-based satellite radio player is between $100 and $400.

(4) AllinOne Satellite Radios

If you are music lover then it is likely that the above mentioned satellite radio players appealed to you, but what if all of them did? Purchasing a satellite radio player for the home, vehicle, and another one to take with wherever you go can get fairly expensive. All-in-one satellite radios are a solution to that potentially expensive problem. All-in-one satellite radios are small enough so they can be transported whenever you go and they can also be used in the home or in your car.

The average price of an all-in-one satellite player is between $150 and $350.

The features found on a satellite radio player will all depend on the manufacturer; however, there are some common product features. The majority of satellite radio players come with rechargeable batteries, full color displays, channel presents, a remote control, and song storage. Portable players are likely to come with headphones and a belt clip. Satellite radios that are designed for the vehicle are likely to come with stands, suction cups, and other dashboard accessories.

If you are interested in subscribing to a commercial-free satellite radio service then you will need at least one of the above mentioned satellite radio players. Of course, you have the final decision when it comes to selecting a particular player, but you should know that all-in-one satellite radio players are now the most popular. All-in-one satellite radios give you the ability to hook the player up to your car speakers, your speakers at home, or your headphones. To most Americans, the features are well worth the price. <bio>Matt Barstow offers valuable tips and information about satellite radio, players, and services.
