Did you know that dogs are affected by arthritis just like humans? And just as with humans, there are many causes and classifications of canine arthritis. The term arthritis actually means inflammation of the joint. This inflammation can be triggered by aging, trauma, ruptured tendons, torn ligaments, degenerative joint disease and also lack of activity. Below are some of the common forms of canine arthritis:

Canine Arthritis: Osteoarthritis

This form of canine arthritis is the most common and it is also referred to as degenerative joint disease. This type of arthritis is a slowly progressing disease which causes the breakdown of the cartilage inside a joint. Cartilage is a special type of tissue that swathes the bones where they come in contact with each other to provide shock absorption and lubrication. This provides pain free and frictionless movement. When the cartilage becomes damaged, osteoarthritis begins to develop. When the body is unable to repair the damaged cartilage, pain and inflammation sets in followed by permanent damage to the joint.

Canine Arthritis: Infectious Arthritis

This type of arthritis is caused by a growth of microorganisms within a joint. The infection can start in the joint, or spread there from a different place in the body which is the case with Lyme disease. Lyme disease is transmitted by ticks and can affect one or more joints.

Canine Arthritis: Rheumatoid Arthritis

This form of arthritis is not common and usually strikes middle aged or older dogs belonging to the smaller breeds.

Canine Arthritis: Systematic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

This type of arthritis is a polysystemic disease which affects the joints. The disease causes the dog's immune system to attack the body and damage the organs, joints, and skin.

Canine Arthritis: Symptoms

A common sign for the dog to display if he is suffering from arthritis is to have stiffness in the morning. He may appear to have pain and not want to be picked up or touched in certain places on his body. He may favor a particular limb while walking and may develop a limp. The dog may also become lethargic and not have an interest in physical activity. He may hesitate to jump or have difficulty standing or sitting.

Canine Arthritis: Treatments

Unfortunately there is no cure for canine arthritis as of today but there are methods to control the symptoms. The primary treatment is for the purpose of pain management, and pain relief lotions have proven to be effective for treating the stiffness and aches associated with canine arthritis. Sometimes, surgery is recommended but usually the less extreme treatment methods will be attempted first. The best thing to do is consult with your veterinarian who can advise you on how best to care for your ailing dog so he will receive the best care possible. Your vet may try such supplements as chondroitin and glucosamine which have both been shown to be useful in reducing inflammation and slowing the degenerative process in dogs. These substances work by drawing fluid into the joints which helps the body to repair the damage to the cartilage. <bio>Sarah Thomas is an established freelance writer.
You've finally decided you want to get a dog, but how do you go about choosing a dog breed that will fit your personality and lifestyle. There are over 400 different dog breeds to choose from. Don't just consider the outward appearance when picking a dog breed.

Do you want a male or female?
Do you want a puppy or an adult?
Do you want a lap dog or guard dog?

First, consult with a professional dog handler or a professional dog trainer to learn about certain dog personalities of different breeds, and try to match what you want with what a particular dog has to offer. Also, talk to a veterinarian about your choice of a purebred or mixed breed dog. The professional trainers and vets' opinions are invaluable, as they handle many different dogs every day and have first hand knowledge of the characteristics, and qualities of different types of dogs and breeds.

You can choose between a purebred dog or a mixed breed dog. The advantages of purebred dogs are consistency of appearance, size, coat type, and color. If you decide on a German Shepherd breed, you can be certain it will grow to a certain size...It will be similar to other German Shepherds in appearance...Its color, temperament, coat, etc will be similar to other German Shepherds. Purebred dogs generally have more genetic faults and deformities than do mixed breeds.

Mixed breed puppies may mature to look like their dam, their sire (if known) or neither. Their coats may be rough, smooth, or wiry. Adult mixed breeds are difficult to ascertain, as are their expressions. These variations are multiplied when either or both parents are from mixed backgrounds. Mixed breeds usually have a certain amount of heterosis ( increased vigor or other superior qualities that come from crossbreeding), which, under some circumstances, result in stronger and more disease-resistant dogs. A mixed breed puppy is likely to have a very individual personality, seemingly unrelated to either of its parents.

The temperament of mixed breeds are often quieter and more stable than those of purebreds, although this characteristic is not consistent. Temperament is partially genetic and partly the result of experience and training. Many purebreds have a notably quiet temperament, and an occasional mixed breed is unpredictable.

Before you select a purebred or a mixed breed, decide what you expect of the dog. If you have a desire to exhibit it in conformation shows, obedience trials, field trials, herding tests, or other American Kennel Club sponsored events, you must start out with a purebred.

If you want a companion, a family pet, or a child's dog and have no aspirations of winning blue ribbons, a mixed breed should fill your need nicely. Mixed breed puppies and adult dogs are plentiful, both from shelters and private homes. They cost less to buy, and may be easier to handle. Mixed breed dogs can compete in Frisbee contests, 4-H obedience, and non-AKC agility trials, and are included in the AKC-sponsored Canine Good Citizen program.<bio>Lamar Deane offers free information on Why Its Important To Choose The Right Dog Breed To help guide you through the different types of dog breeds visit: 6 Distinct Classifications of Dog Breeds</bio>

The Bulldog is one of the favored breeds of dog, one reason being that they do not require a great deal of time spent on grooming. The Bulldog definitely has one of the most favorable personalities and temperaments in the canine world, and they make a great family pet even if younger aged children will be living in the home. It is going to be well worth it for you to take some time and find a legitimate and reputable breeder to purchase a Bulldog from.

There are hundreds of different breeds of dog that you can choose from but a few in particular that are especially popular. This includes the Bulldog for one, who is a favorite around the world but especially so in the United States and England. Descended from the Asiatic mastiff, the Bulldog was actually developed in Great Britain and they are considered as being a non-sporting breed group.

One of the main reasons that the Bulldog is such a favored breed is that they are so easy to take care of. Unlike many other breeds, the Bulldog's coat is close, straight, glossy and smooth, and so there is little shedding and there is also no feathering or curl. This cuts back significantly on the time it will take you to groom the dog, which is very advantageous, and it also means that they look great all year round, with little effort from you.

The appearance of the Bulldog, as aforementioned, is definitely respectable, but there are other characteristics of the Bulldog that are quite favorable as well. They have a fantastic personality, and they are loyal, affectionate and deeply devoted to their family. They make wonderful pets even in homes with younger aged children, and they will get along with other pets in the home but may react differently to other strange dogs and animals when you are out and about.

This is due to their embedded guarding abilities, which are good to have in a dog because they are always alert and on guard but will only bark when necessary, when they sense a danger or threat. Training is still important with Bulldogs even though they have a great personality to begin with, especially since they have a tendency to be very stubborn and domineering. As the owner of a Bulldog you need to make sure they are aware of who is in charge.

The bottom line is that although there are literally hundreds of different breeds of dog that you can choose from, Bulldogs are definitely one of the best. They are easily one of the most laid back and friendly dogs, and make for a great family pet. Once you have decided that you do in fact want a Bulldog, the best idea is to take a bit of time and find a reputable breeder that you can buy from.

This is important because although there are certainly many legitimate and respected breeders out there, there are also many that are known as mass breeders who are more in it for the financial means than because they actually care for the dogs. Make sure you ask a potential breeder a lot of questions before agreeing to do business with them, and have them provide you with the proper paperwork. A good breeder will be pleased that you are concerned with these sorts of issues and will never make you feel as though you are overstepping your bounds. <bio>Bobby Callahan has a great deal of experience with canines, Bulldogs in particular. The http://www.officialbulldogguide.com/ Bulldog definitely has one of the most favorable personalities in the canine world, and they are great both for solo owners and larger sized families. There is a ton of http://www.officialbulldogguide.com/Bulldog.php Bulldog information that you can make yourself aware of and which will definitely help in the process of you deciding on what breed of dog you should choose to have for a pet. </bio>

So you have decided to get a dog. A canine can be a wonderful companion that will be with you for many years to come. But dogs are inherently wild and will require dog training to make them comfortable in an urban setting. Many people choose their pet based on the attributes that they like and the training will bring out those instinctive actions and mold them into acceptable behavior for an urban life. Individuals find that pet being properly trained is very important to the communication between pet and master.

Purpose Of Training

Even though your pet will need many dog supplies, there is nothing as important as a properly fitting collar and leash. Training your pet would be next to impossible without these items. These items are used to guide the dog during the training and should never be used for punishment. The purpose of training is not to make the dog submissive, it is to treat him which behaviors are acceptable and which ones are not. Trust is an integral part of training and if your pet does not trust you, he will not listen to you.

When To Train

The best time to train your dog is while he is a puppy. Lessons learned in this stage of development are retained throughout the life of the canine. In this stage, pets are eager to learn and eager to please so they can grasp new techniques pretty quickly. This is especially important when dealing with the larger breeds of dog, as they can quickly become too big to manage during training. When animals are young, they look up to the one that feeds them and gives them shelter. They try to learn everything that they can from their provider and trust that their provider will teach them about the world. This is why training a canine at a young age is so effective.

Training your dog is one of the best gifts that you could give your dog. Proper training will keep him out of trouble, keep him safe, and keep him healthy. If unsure how to proceed on your own, enlist the help of a professional trainer or enroll in some pet training classes. These classes are very popular and they help the dog learn commands at a faster pace because he can observe other animals doing the same task that you are requesting of him. With proper training, your pet will be happier because he will know exactly what you are expecting of him. <bio>Darnell Symington is an avid dog enthusiast and enjoys writing about her experiences with her favorite pets.
In the anus and rectum, hemorrhoids are enlarged bulging blood vessels which can be found either inside or outside of the anus. If the hemorrhoids are internal they will be inside the rectum and just below the lining of the anus. Bleeding will occur if a bowel movement causes these internal hemorrhoids to rupture. There are other hemorrhoids that are external and can occur near the anus while being covered by a thin layer of skin. These can also bleed if they are ruptured for any reason.

Hemorrhoids are often incorrectly associated with conditions such as anal fissures. Conditions such as anal fissures can also result in bleeding and should be treated only specific to their condition. Itching of the anal area can signal that hemorrhoids are present, but there can also be a protruding lump, some blood in the stools after a bowel movement and the dog may experience localized pain.

Cause of Hemorrhoids

Once you know the causes of canine hemorrhoids it can be easy to find a way to relieve and eliminate them for your dog. Canine hemorrhoids can be simply expressed as expanded blood vessels. Too much pressure in the rectum can cause canine hemorrhoids after the dog sits for too long or if they become constipated. The exact cause of canine hemorrhoids is not known, but it is believed that diet may play a part. It is important to visit the veterinarian right away if you suspect canine hemorrhoids so that treatment can be started immediately.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

There may not be any symptoms visible with internal canine hemorrhoids since they are inside the anus and the dog doesn't have very many nerve endings here. Bleeding is often the first sign that occurs with internal canine hemorrhoids. When bleeding occurs it becomes extremely important to seek veterinary care right away since the veterinarian will be able to prescribe the right medications to give your dog relief from the hemorrhoids.

The veterinarian will also be able to give you guidelines towards preventing future canine hemorrhoids. There may be more visible symptoms when it comes to external canine hemorrhoids. The dog may show signs of itching, discomfort, burning and pain. Obviously symptoms such as this would require immediate treatment by a licensed veterinarian.

Treatment for Hemorrhoids

It isn't very easy to find a simply treatment for canine hemorrhoids since they are very uncommon. In fact most dogs never experience hemorrhoids in their life. Many of the human medications for hemorrhoids such as creams and ointments can also work for dogs. Your veterinarian will suggest the proper hemorrhoid medication and dose to help relieve your dogs' symptoms. Although most of the treatment options for hemorrhoids today will not be able to completely get rid of your dog hemorrhoids. <bio>John Mailer has written many articles about dogs and puppies and how to look after their health and wellbeing. His main business is as an internet marketer. http://www.basicsdogtraining.com http://www.basicsdogtraining.com/dog_hemorrhoids.html http://www.howtostartonlinehomebusiness.com </bio>

Yeast infections are definitely not something you want to get. They are called coetaneous candidacies and this infection occurs when the yeast on the skin grows more actively and causes a red, scaling, and itchy rash on the skin. Canine Yeast Infections are common in dogs. Because yeast infections generally occur in moist areas on the body, such as the armpits and groin, these symptoms can usually be found in a dog.

Getting Canine yeast infections is certainly no pleasant experience, but you have to be sure not to scratch it or it else it will only get worse. If you notice a rash forming, you will definitely want to get to a doctor and have it checked out. Your doctor will give your dog a physical examination and, in some cases, will take a skin sample to provide a correct diagnosis. If your dog have been using antibiotic treatments, they are more likely to get a yeast infection.

Origin And Multiplication Of Canine Yeast Infection:

You will definitely know when something is wrong to your dog, because your dog experience redness, swelling, and possibly pain in a particular area. Itching, burning, and soreness are three other common symptoms of canine yeast infections, so if you feel or see anything like these symptoms for a prolonged period of time, you may want to get yourself checked out.

That is another thing. As soon as you notice something is wrong and it does not get any better, you will most definitely want to get to a doctor. Your doctor can give your dog a physical examination and, possibly, take a skin sample. That way, your doctor can get a better idea of the severity of canine yeast infection and can properly administer a form of treatment.

Precautions To Be Taken While Canine Yeast Infection:

Everyone is at a possible risk to receive Canine yeast infections. You just have to make sure you know the causes and the signs of having one. If you do get a yeast infection, you will most certainly know you have one. In women, irritation and a whitish or whitish-gray discharge are symptoms of a yeast infection. Men should look for red sores on the head or foreskin of the penis.

Canine yeast infections are just one large type. There are smaller types of infections within that category. There are also internal yeast infections, such as thrash, which is a yeast infection of the mouth. You just have to be careful not to over-expose yourself to things that may cause a yeast infection. Not everyone gets one, but everyone is susceptible.

For most healthy people, physicians can diagnose a Candida infection without performing yeast infection tests. In cases where a patient has not a previous yeast infection, a test may be required for accurate diagnosis. If the infection does not go away after a normal course of treatment or if involves more than one area of the body, more extensive tests may needed. <bio>You can also find more info on http://www.yeastinfectiontreatment.org/cause/yeast-infection-vaginal.html on vaginal yeast infection and http://www.yeastinfectiontreatment.org/cause/yeast-infection.html on controlling yeast infection. </bio>

In the world of canines, many diseases and infections exist everywhere, even in the most sophisticated homes and yards. Diagnosing a dog disease comes from seeing the symptoms your dog may show and then having the necessary tests done to find the exact cause of the disease. The top canine diseases are canine viral hepatitis, bloating, aortic steonosis, distemper and the parvovirus. With proper health care and diet, dogs can live a healthy life as your faithful companion for many years.

Diagnosis of Dog Diseases- Canine Viral Hepatitis

This viral disease affects younger dogs and puppies. Affecting the liver and inner lining of the blood vessels, this disease is transmitted from dog to dog by way of a discharge from the infected dog. Some symptoms of the disease stomach bleeding, increased thirst, lack of appetite, vomiting and a tender stomach when touched. Dogs do show discomfort when experiencing canine viral hepatitis.

Diagnosis of Dog Diseases- Bloating

A life threatening and serious problem in dogs, also called gastric dilation volvulus, comes from over eating as well as other health problems. Some breeds are prone to this because of their breed, but others just plain over eat. The symptoms of bloating are a restless dog and a fat looking stomach that happens quickly. Dry heaves follow such a condition and proper diagnosis is required by tests. Sometimes taking food away for twenty-four hours will help reduce the bloating problem in your dog.

Diagnosis of Dog Diseases- Canine Distemper

Canine distemper is a viral infection that affects the immune system and can lead to serious complications if not death. This disease is contracted from contact with the excretions of an infected dog. Airborne particles can also contribute to infecting other dogs. Dogs rarely survive, but when they do, they suffer from muscle spasms and convulsions. The symptoms of a fever over 104 degrees, depression, pus in the eyes, convulsions, diarrhea and vomiting, if you see these signs, you need to contact your vet immediately. Proper vaccination of your dog prevents this viral disease from taking the life or livelihood of your companion.

Diagnosis of Dog Diseases- Aortic Steonosis

Aortic steonosis is an obstruction of the blood vessel that carries blood from the left ventricle and is an inherited health problem. No symptoms are visible for mild cases, but severe cases prevent the dog from any type of exercise. Dogs tend to faint when performing any kind of exercise due to the severity of the blockage. If your dog shows symptoms of fainting, tests will determine the exact cause and the vet will describe treatment objectives.

Diagnosis of Dog Diseases- Canine Parvovirus

Puppies under six months of age succumb to this particular disease. The intestinal tract, lymphoid tissue, immune system and the bone marrow are affected. Symptoms may be vomiting, convulsion weight loss and dehydration with coughing. For some puppies, death is immediate. Puppies need proper medical attention and proper vaccinations to prevent such an untimely demise. <bio>You can also find more info on http://www.aboutdoghealth.org/symptoms/illness.html on dog illness symptoms and http://www.aboutdoghealth.org/symptoms/diagnosis-for-dog-illness.html on diagnose dog sickness symptoms. http://AboutDogHealth.org is a comprehensive resource to help dog owners. </bio>

Knowing how to choose your new tropical fish is going to be one of the most important things you ever do in this new hobby. But how can you tell which are the best fish for your tank? This is the question I will answer for you in this article.

The first thing we need to discuss is the temperament of your fish. There are only three main different temperaments a fish can have. Here they are:

Social breeds. These breeds of fish will get along with any other type of fish. Some of the most common fish to fit in this category are Danios, Tetras, Guppies, Swordtails, Mollies and Corydoras.

Semi-social breeds. These breeds can comfortably be kept along with other fish that are of equal size without them showing signs of aggression. Think of fish like Barbs, Angelfish and Gouramis.

Aggressive breeds. These breeds of fish must always be kept by themselves, or at most, in pairs with another fish of the same breed. An example of these type of fish would be Male Bettas, Oscars and Jewelfish.

If you've got a good local pet store, they should be able to give you further advice on what kind of fish you can keep together. A good question to ask the pet employees is if the fish have been kept in quarantine for at least two weeks before being available for sale.

If they haven't been quarantined the fish will be much more susceptible to disease and early death if they have been exposed to high amounts of stress (such as being on an airplane) without a few weeks rest time.

Another important thing to look for in a fish is its color. You want to choose a fish that has a dense and well-defined color. If the fish has a pattern, check to see there isn't any signs of blurring between colors. <bio>Learn more about keeping tropical fish at: http://www.tropical-fish-blog.com </bio>

Over the last thousands of years, cats have pretty much handled their breeding themselves. In the beginning, they were used for one purpose - hunting and killing rodents. As the years progressed, we began to breed cats more to our liking. Now days, there are several different breeds of cats - which you can tell if you look closely http://www.friendss.info

These days there are over 70 distinct cat breeds, which are recognized through cat registries. There are several registries that will recognize around 40 breeds or so, as they exclude the more domestic breeds such as tigers. There are also many variations as well, including wild cats that have longer hair.

There are some cat breeds who have roots going back quite a bit in history. Some Japanese breeds, such as the Japanese Bobtail, can be traced back more than 1,000 years in history. These cats were very common and well known throughout Medieval Japan. Now days though, they are all but a myth throughout Japan and the entire world.

The more common cat breeds that are found in North America include the alley cat, long haired cat, and Persian cat. Siamese cats are also common, although they are well known to be destructive and to have a foul temper. Persian cats are very popular, proving to be loving companions. Persian cats can be very expense, depending on where you get it and what type of Persian cat it is.

Alley cats are the most common in North America. There are actually several different breeds, although most of us just refer to them as alley cats. They make good pets, although there are literally thousands of them in existence. Cats are known to breed more than any other pet, and they will continue to breed until they are stopped. Alley cats are among the most bred, as there are hundreds of thousands of cats that are homeless - and have nothing to do but breed.

The look of the cat is the easiest way to tell what breed he or she may be. Some people choose to go by color, although color isn't as easy to identify. Different breeds of cats have different looks, such as the Siamese and Persian cats. Siamese cats are almost always black, and easy to identify by their color and their eyes. Persian cats on the other hand, are easily identified by their body type and their hair.

Over the years, there has been quite a few breeds come along. Cats were one of the first pets, and easily one of the most popular. Millions of people around the world own cats, with many people preferring a cat over any other pet - including dogs. No matter breed of cat you get - you're sure to get a pet who make for a great companion for years and years to come. <bio>http://www.scamss.info </bio>

In recent years, dogs have become an intricate part of law enforcement. Dog training for law enforcement purposes is critical in preparing them for their role in law enforcement. This type of training will have your canine performing more then

basic guard duties, security, protection or agility exercises. In law enforcement your k9 duties are very clear, and the training program is designed to assist them in performing their duties to their best ability. All k-9 breeds have a unique sense of smell; dog training can hone those skills to find anyone whether it is a hundred yards away or in a place that no one would think to look.

Police canine training is very rigid because the dogs will be dealing with life and death situations. They are trained to find

evidence at a crime scene, or to find lost or missing people miles away from where they were last seen. Dog training also teaches the dogs how to handle any type of disturbance including

domestic.

There are many duties that a police dog must perform to be a viable part of police units, and the right training is critical.

One of the toughest duties on a police dog is a search and rescue mission. Another of their most dangerous duties is the detection of drugs and explosive equipment. These two situations require that the police dog be highly trained and responsive to voice commands. This would also include the proper level of obedience so the canine barks, bites and will attack only when instructed and not because of a hostile situation. Professional law enforcement trainers from the top training schools believe that one police dog is equal to ten policemen.

The key to training a police dog effectively is that the dog and the handler must be compatible. If there is no chemistry between them, then the training will not be effective. A handler must connect with the dog, using a mix psychology, sternness, and understanding. The handler is the person who trains the dog; he or she also will be on duty with the dog so establishing trust is very important.

When a dog is being trained, a bond develops between handler and dog that reinforces the behavior that is to be expected from the dog. Some professionals disagree on the issue of using a collar during certain phases of the training. Whether or not this is true about the issue of using collars during training an agreed issue is that the handler must be able to see the potential that the dog has and what its strong traits are and work to develop them. Using positive reinforcement will make sure that the dog understands what the handler wants.

Dog training is not difficult if you understand your dog. In fact as you constantly and consistently vest time and energy into the training of your canine it will pay off. By constantly

rewarding him or her for behaving correctly it will encourage the dog to continue striving for excellence.

There are other aspects of dog training as well; these include food, exercise and protecting them from danger while training. By providing a well-rounded training program, you will have a police dog that will be highly motivated to doing his or her job because they have a natural instinct to please their owners. When you follow a dog-training plan, you are nurturing your dog's natural abilities to become the best. <bio>Orlando Smith makes it easy to perform effective dog training, quickly and easily.
There are many different types of small dog breeds, each having their own unique characteristics and traits. Each dog, of course, is a unique individual, but generally most dogs of a given breed have more similarities than dissimilarities of behavior and personality. Although small dog breeds are often thought of as highly strung and yappy, this needn't be true at all as long as the dog is cared for correctly, given lots of love and attention, as well as good socialization and training. Small dogs may perhaps not adjust as well to boisterous children and toddlers, but they can do very well with older children and families. Generally, small dog breeds are just ten inches or less high at the shoulder. In most breeds, the male is slightly larger than the female, but the difference is generally small.

It's extremely easy to love small dogs, and one of their great advantages is that they don't take up too much room. But there are other, numerous reasons why a small dog is one of the best types of dog you can have in your life. No matter who you are, there is a type of pet that is small enough to fit easily into your life, but with a heart big enough to fill your days with joy. If you're thinking about getting a new pet, consider any of the small breeds of dogs that you can hold easily and enjoy to the full.

If necessary, a small animal can easily be carried from place to place, and, of course, they are easier to fit in the home as well. When you take your small dog out for a walk you don't have to be afraid all of the time that he's going to pull you over. If you have to travel, a small dog is easier to get in and out of the car, and at night he can snuggle into smaller spaces and still be wonderfully comfortable. All this means, of course, that little dogs are ideal for homes that are smaller and more compact in nature, but they are also perfect for those people with larger homes who don't want to fill all the space up with animals. And when you consider the very wide range of different small dog breeds to choose from - terriers, spaniels, chihuahuas, pomeranians, pugs, dachshunds, etc., etc. - it seems impossible not to find one that is just right for your needs and preferences.

There are many other small dog breeds available so you need to know exactly what you're looking for. You need to make sure that any new dog - whether a small one or not - fits in with your family, your living space and your lifestyle. Before making a final decision on the breed you want, make sure that you do some thorough research and talk to at least a couple of breeders to find just the right match for you and your family. <bio>Terry Roberts is a professional translator and linguist, with a wide range of interests.
If you have mild allergies to dogs but would still love to have a furry canine companion, you do have some dog options. Now keep in mind that there are no allergen-free dogs; it is simply not possible. However, there are some breeds that are considered hypoallergenic, which is basically means that these certain dog breeds will produce a lot less allergens than some of the bigger breeds such as the Golden Retriever.

It's all about the Coat

Dogs that shed a lot and have thick undercoats are obviously not the right choice for potential owners who are allergy-prone. However, dogs with a single coat of hair with little to no undercoat are a good choice as are hairless dogs.

Keep in mind however, that even with the hairless variety there are always some allergens to contend with. This is due to the fact that all dogs, regardless of their coat produce dander which is a combination of urine, saliva and shedding skin cells. Some people with asthma and allergies are more tolerant than others, thus the choice of single coat and hairless dog varieties.

Types of Allergy-Friendly Dog Breeds

Of the hairless varieties, the Chinese Crested Hairless, Xoloitzcuintle Mexican Hairless and the American Hairless Terrier are three popular dog breeds for the allergy prone. Because they have no coat to speak of, you will have to take precautions in both sunny weather as well as cold weather because they have nothing to protect them.

There are quite a few single coat dogs that are hypoallergenic and the poodle is the most popular. They are distinct with their curly, wiry coat and the breed comes in the standard poodle size as well as a miniature model. All sizes of Schnauzers are popular too because they do not have the shedding problem that other dogs have. Their coats are normally rather wiry with a small soft undercoat.

Several terrier breeds make the list of allergy-friendly dogs as well. The soft-coated Wheaten Terrier is a popular variety and has a soft, wavy long coat which normally does not shed. The Kerry Blue Terrier, the West Highland White and the Bedlington Terrier are other relative non-shedders.

Managing your Dog Allergies

As mentioned above, even the most hypoallergenic dogs have some dander that will, well, get your allergy dander up as well. Therefore, there are a few things you can do to lower the allergens in the air of your home so that you can enjoy a relatively, sneeze and watery-eye free dog ownership.

Choose vacuum cleaner bags that have HEPA quality filtering so that dust and dander does not escape the bag. Buy a few HEPA grade air filters for several rooms in your home where you would most likely be with your dog. These machines will filter your air trapping dust and dander that could set off an allergic reaction. For your central air and heat, change your filter once a month using hypoallergenic filters which will screen out up to 99% of pollen, dust and pet dander. Open your windows every so often when the pollen counts are low to allow fresh air inside the home. This will help filter out some pet dander in the process.

Wash your dog bedding and toys once a week if possible as well. There is also a product out on the market that is an anti-allergen spray which neutralizes allergens such as dust, pollen and pet dander for several weeks. If you are serious about being a dog owner, practicing some of these management tips will really help in controlling your allergy symptoms and allow you to enjoy your new dog too. <bio>You can find all kinds of designer dog clothing at http://www.boomers-boutique-dog-clothing.com.
The term 'work like a dog' is true. Dogs can work in many different jobs. Their most common job is to bring joy to lonely people, families and children. In most cases, these working dogs are paid in love. Here are a few examples of working dogs.

Farm Dogs

When you hear the phrase 'working dogs' you think of farm dogs. These are the original working dogs. They have a natural instinct for working livestock and herding sheep. My Corgi loved rounding up the lawnmower and vacuum cleaner.

Dog breeds that are associated with this type of working dog are:

Welsh Collie, Border Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The Australian Kelpie originated from the old British working Collie. The Australian Cattledog is also known as Blue Heeler, Red Heeler and Queensland Heeler.

The use of motorcycles instead of working dogs on a property has become more popular but nothing can replace a trained working dog.

Guard Dogs

People think that their dog is a guard dog because he barks (refer my article 'To Bark or Not to Bark - That is the Question'). These dogs are working dogs but are really watch dogs. They bark to warn. A guard dog is a working dog who is trained and employed to retrain or attack an intruder.

Most common dog breeds used for this kind of working dog are:

Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Bullmastiff and American Bulldog.

Police Dogs

These working dogs are trained specifically to assist Police in various areas.

Public Order Enforcement - trained to chase and detain suspects.

Illicit Substances Dogs - (sniffer dogs) detect illicit substances e.g. drugs, explosives. These working dogs are also used by Customs to sniff out illegal importation of wildlife, plants etc. These working dogs are mainly Beagles.

Cadaver dogs - Because dogs have an acute sense of smell they can detect the odour of decomposing bodies.

Tracking - Locate suspects or find missing people. Bloodhounds are mainly used.

Guide Dogs - Companion Dogs

These working dogs aren't trained just to assist the blind. They can be used as companions to children and adults who are disabled, old, vision and hearing impaired, isolated.

It takes nearly 2 years to train a pup to become a working dog and includes 5 months of intensive dog training. After about 14 months with a Puppy Raiser, the pup goes to the Guide Dog Centre where he is assessed. If he doesn't qualify to become a working dog for the Guide Dogs, he is again assessed to become a Pets for Therapy working dog for disadvantaged people. If the pup fails he is then offered to the Puppy Raiser as a pet.

The only dog breeds used are purebred Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Labrador/Golden Retriever crosses because they are calm, loyal and intelligent.

Working dogs are used in a greater capacity today as man realises the benefits of having a canine friend in the workplace. <bio>Kay Stevens is the publisher of http://www.corgidogworld.com which is a site dedicated to the Corgi breed of dog as well as all dog breeds.
Hi,

I just wanted to say that I've been reading much of your book and I can't wait to get started applying your techniques to my two dogs.

(To read about the book and package she's referring to, take a peek at: http://www.dogproblems.com/secretsbook.htm)

I've noticed in almost all, if not all, of your training techniques, you mention using a pinch collar for correcting the dog. On page 155 you say that a pinch collar is the best collar to use - with a few exceptions for the toy breeds. Now, both of my dogs are toy breeds: I have a 15 lb. poodle/terrier mix, and a 10 lb. Yorkie. I'm also seriously considering getting a miniature pinscher sometime this summer. So my question is: What do you mean when you say andquot;with a few exceptions for the toy breedsandquot;? Are you saying that a pinch collar should not be used on toy breeds or certain toy breeds? If so, what should I be using on them? They both desperately need training and the pinch collar sounds like something that would give me results.

Cathy

Dear Cathy:

Thanks for the kind words.

The idea is to not get stuck on any one type of training equipment, but rather to use whatever you need to achieve the desired results. In most cases, it's just plain easier to use a slip collar/choke chain with the toy breeds because:

1. Since it's such a small dog you're working with, it's easy to make your corrections motivational if you're doing it the right way. (Tug and release).

2. It's hard to find the mini/micro pinch collars. If you're trying to use the small one, then you've only got one or two prongs in the entire collar - which doesn't really give you enough of to correct with.

In sum, you can use a pinch collar if you get the micro-sized one. They're hard to find, but if you spend about 15 minutes searching the web I'll bet you can locate a supplier. If not, just use a properly sized slip/choke chain.

That's all for now, folks! Adam <bio>Adam G.
Like us, a dog's requirements changes as he nears middle age. If you are 50 plus, then you will realise that your dietary requirements are different to when you where in your teens. This is the same for dogs. As a rule of thumb, a dog who is 7 years old is really 50 years old in dog years.

These days, with the higher quality of veterinary care and nutrition available, our pets are living longer which is great. However, the down-side of this is that they are at a higher risk of developing age-related conditions such as arthritis, kidney disease and canine Alzheimer's.

Warning signs of these problems can include bad breath, sleeping more, increased urination and drinking and changes in weight and behaviour. I, for one, can definitely relate to this. Therefore, when your dog reaches 7 years you must look for these signs but it is even better to take precautions.

The best and easiest precaution is switching dog food. This switch should be to a dog food specially formulated for older dogs, which can slow down aging and help prevent the development of age-related diseases.

A 7 plus dog food should contain higher levels of antioxidants, high quality protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and optimum levels of fibre. It should also be enriched with glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate to help support healthy joints and cartilage.

Symptoms of age-related diseases are usually only detected when there has been significant damage, so don't wait until you actually notice something wrong with your dog. As an example, kidney disease is one of the most common diseases among older dogs, but the symptoms will only show once 75% of kidney function has been lost.

Therefore, it is of great importance that once your dog reaches 7, you look seriously at his dog food and make the necessary changes to his diet.

Interesting Facts.

1. A dog becomes a 'senior citizen' at about 7 years of age which is equivalent to a 50 year old human.

2. Switching to a dog food specially formulated for older dogs can slow down the development of old-age diseases.

3. Mature dogs run a higher risk of developing diseases like arthritis, kidney disease and canine brain aging (Alzheimer's).

4. A dog which is well cared for can live between 10 and 15 years.

5. Approximately 40% of pets are seniors.

6. The oldest recorded canine, an Australian Cattle Dog, lived to 29 years. That's about 203. Unreal!!

REMEMBER - Prevention is better than cure. Don't wait until it is too late. When your dog reaches 7 review his dog food and make sure you switch to a 'senior' dog food.

In closing, if you notice any changes in your dog or discomfort, PLEASE immediately seek veterinary advice. If you follow these few simple points, then you and your best friend will share many wonderful years together. <bio>I write articles about the wellbeing of dogs and their owners.
You've researched the different dog breeds to find the best one for you and your family, you've taken the time to find out whether the breeder you chose is ethical, and now you're finally bringing that precious new bundle of joy home. The hard part is over, right? Actually, there are several mistakes that many new puppy owners make that can really turn this joyful time into a frustrating and worrying experience. Avoid these new dog owner mistakes to be sure you and your puppy are off to a great start:

1. Potty training your puppy indoors and then expecting him to automatically go outdoors when he is older. Those nifty potty training pads look an awful lot like nice, plushy rugs to your puppy and he may opt to use your rugs as a toilet spot after you do away with the pads.

2. Giving in to his sad whimpers and tucking him in your bed for the first few nights and then expecting him to sleep on his own in a few days without crying. He'll just cry louder and longer once he knows what he is missing.

3. Letting your guilty feelings overwhelm you so that you don't crate train him. Crate training helps keep your puppy safe, since he can't get into dangerous things when you aren't watching him if he's crated. Also, he actually feels more secure when he is crated while no one else is home.

4. Taking your puppy with you when you go out, especially if you are going to a park or pet store. Puppies should be finished with immunizations before they go on outings. Their immune systems are often not fully developed when they are young and they are more susceptible to some of the deadliest dog diseases.

5. Letting your puppy do things that are cute in puppies and not at all cute in full size dogs, such as jumping up on guests. It is easier to curb these behaviors right away than it is to break your adult dog of bad habits.

To get your new puppy off to a good start, why not take the free ABC's of New Puppy Care mini course?
Shih Tzu Grooming Is Art, Skill, Trade and a Profession

Shih Tzu grooming can be compared to human beauty culture because it is the beautification of the Shih Tzu breed. The art of Shih Tzu grooming is aimed at creating a reasonable facsimile of a normal specimen of the Shih Tzu breed. The attendance of Shih Tzu American Kennel Club dog shows is an excellent place to observe first hand the best specimens of the Shih Tzu breed.

There are basic steps applicable to grooming the Shih Tzu as well as all breeds of dogs. Anyone interested in becoming a complete dog grooming artist, should know how to make all breeds beautiful. A Shih Tzu grooming artist professional should know how best to enhance the appearance of each breed of dog. However, if the Shih Tzu is your favorite breed, one can become known as an "expert" in grooming the Shih Tzu.

A professional Shih Tzu groomer understands that certain breeds, like Poodles, most Terriers and Spaniels, and the Shih Tzu require far more time and skill to groom than smooth-haired breeds, in which only a knowledge of the fundamentals is required.

History of dog grooming:

The dog, including the Shih Tzu, has been the closest animal to the human family. Grooming dogs was the fashion of the aristocracy during the 19th Century. The art flourished during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI of France. The Poodle, however, and not the Shih Tzu, was the favorite breed. Grooming was largely confined to the Poodle. The first recorded grooming parlors were established in France about this same time.

The Shih Tzu has become so much an integral part of the family that going to the canine beautician is as much a ritual for the family Shih Tzu as going to the hairdresser is for the lady of the house. Shih Tzu and dog styling in general has also become so professional and sophisticated that Shih Tzu owners have become as selective about their Shih Tzu's groomer as they are about their own hair stylist.

Origin of the clips:

Since the art of dog grooming flourished during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI of France and the Poodle, instead of our beloved Shih Tzu, was the favorite breed in France, the Poodle breed became known as the French Poodle. The first Poodles were water dogs and retrievers. The clip most suitable to them resembled what is known today as the "Continental clip." A mane of hair was left on the foreparts while the back and hindquarters were shaven. This clip made the Poodle resemble a lion, and therefore the clip became known in England as the "Lion clip."

The American fancy made some variations in the "Lion clip" and began to call it the "Saddle clip." The English Saddle clip calls for the greatest skill in the art of dog grooming.

It is not clear from historical records just when the "pet clips" originated. Often now we hear of a "Puppy Cut" for our Shih Tzu, which is a very popular style for a family pet Shih Tzu. However, for the show ring, there is much, much more to grooming our beloved Shih Tzu.

This article is FREE to publish with resource box. <bio>Connie Limon is a shih tzu breeder.
"What makes you think you're ready for that kind of responsibility?"

It's probably the first thing that most parents will say when their kids ask for a family pet, especially a dog? Most of us with dogs in the family have either said it, or can recall it being said to us some time ago. But it's safe to say that question isn't just for kids. Any dog owner, or a potential canine parent, should ask this of themselves. The thing is, even though the World Wide Web is a great tool for researching "all things doggy", oftentimes too much information can be overwhelming. You've probably come across lists of 100 (or more) tips for responsible dog ownership.

As dog lovers, we think the abundance of resources on doggy ownership is great, but we also come from the school of keeping it simple. Because even though there are definitely some standards of care to uphold, many issues relating to dog care are relative and depend on breed and preference (yours and your dog's). So for the sake of this article, we'll focus on three simple points to remember when asking yourself, "am I being a responsible dog owner?"

Protect your pet from sickness and injury:

This includes annual check-ups at the veterinarian, and making sure that your dog has a healthy diet. If you notice anything out of the ordinary with his coat, weight, or waste, consider changing his diet and contact his vet if it persists. Other things to watch out for are fleas, ticks, and poisonous household items and plants within your pet's reach.

Consider your neighbors:

More than just keeping more intimidating breeds out of your neighbors' way for their safety and peace of mind, considering your neighbors and community means, cleaning up behind your pet. Also, prevent or manage incessant barking. Generally speaking, teach your dog obedience, and clean up after them-always. Your pet is your responsibility and should not be other people's burden.

Avoid Unwanted Litters:

By avoid we don't mean wait until your dog is pregnant and ignore the situation. Take care of a problem before it exists by keeping female dogs in heat properly protected. That way she won't be vulnerable to other dogs, and you won't end up with an unwanted litter. So, check with the vet for birth control methods. And this goes for your male dogs too. You don't want to add to the overcrowded population of unwanted dogs, so think carefully before you breed. It shouldn't be an accident. However, if it happens, have a plan.

Overall, a responsible pet owner protects their dogs, considers others, and breeds (or not breeds) responsibly to avoid unwanted litters. There are a hundred plus choices to make within each one of these points, but with all things, do what works best for you and your dog's situation. Consult the veterinarian when unsure (and sometimes when you think you are sure), and lastly consider others around you. With that, you then can consider yourself a responsible dog owner. <bio>We support Healthy Dogs with healthy treats such as http://www.bestbullysticks.com/ And http://www.bullysticksfordogs.com </bio>

A lot of people shy away from adopting dogs from a shelter because they "don't want someone else's problem." That's unfortunate, because some of the best dogs are at the dog pound or humane society.

Animal trainers for the movies and TV often visit their local shelter because they've figured it out. Many dogs are sent to a shelter just because their previous owner bought the wrong kind of puppy, or couldn't give their intelligent dog enough exercise and mental stimulation to keep them out of trouble.

Other dog trainers also check the shelters regularly and find wonderful canine "employees" that go to work finding drugs for the border patrol, acting as ears for their hearing impaired owners, and providing hours of loving canine therapy in nursing homes.

And, of course, millions of loving, loyal dog pound dogs have found their way into the hearts and homes of people just like you. Many happy dog owners believe they found the perfect dog for their family at the local Humane Society.

Here are just a few of the reasons why adopting a dog instead of a puppy might be a good choice for you:

Are you a runner, a jogger, or a couch-potato who should be walking around the block occasionally? If you adopt a dog from your local animal shelter you'll have an instant exercise partner who won't allow any excuses.

Recent research shows that pairing up with a pooch can help both of you stay committed to an exercise program, even if you've always given up in the past.

If you adopt a dog, you'll have an instant friend. A full-grown dog will give you the loyalty and love you're looking for as soon as you bring her home. In fact, if you take the time to take your new adopted dog for a nice long walk before you ever go inside your house, she'll be totally bonded to you by the time you get back home.

Puppies need to be housebroken, but most (though not all) of the dogs in the animal shelter are already housetrained and ready to learn your rules. Some adjustments may be needed, but if you choose the right adult dog you'll skip the most destructive phases of her puppy-hood.

Puppies are always cute and loveable, but they sometimes grow into dogs with traits you don't care for. Adult dogs have their personalities and characteristics already formed, so what you see is what you get.

Most shelters do test their dogs to make sure they only release people-oriented, non-aggressive, non-biting dogs. Not all shelters test their dogs, however, and the variation in methods is fairly wide.

Even if they don't test the dogs, you can still get a very good idea of the dog's personality and traits by taking it out to the exercise yard and giving it an opportunity to get to know you.

Many urban Humane Societies see the same breeds of dogs over and over again, because these breeds are currently popular but perhaps not well suited to living in a house where the adults are away from home all day. This is certainly true of the many labs, which tend to dig and chew when left alone too long, and the Rottweilers and Pit Bulls, whose intelligence and loyalty have little room for expression if they're chained up in the back yard.

Border Collies are often left at the pound by owners who didn't realize that a smart dog can be a pain in the neck if you don't keep them occupied for many hours a day. These dogs may have been problems for their former owners, but if you can give them the time and attention they need, they will give you years of love and loyalty.

Other dogs are surrendered to the shelter because their owners have financial difficulties and need to move to an apartment that doesn't allow dogs. Others had loving owners who passed away or moved to a nursing home. If you adopt one of these dogs, you will be amazed at how quickly they become a permanent member of your family. <bio>If you are thinking about adopting a dog, http://Older-Dog.com is filled with advice to help you choose the perfect dog for your family. While all breeds, by definition, are unique and easily defined there are some breeds that simply go well past the mark of being unusual. These breeds often require special care and are definitely not dogs for everyone.

The following are some very unique or extreme dog breeds from around the world:

Chinese Crested -- this dog can be either with or without hair, but the more known variety has hair only on the top of the head, the feet, and the feet. There is also a variety of Chinese Crested called the Powderpuff that has hair all over the body. They are a very fine boned dog that only grows to about 11-13 inches when fully mature.

Ibizan Hound -- this is a natural born hunting dog with very clean lines and abundant energy. The Ibizan has very light skin tones and pigments, which makes it a very unique looking dog. They can be up to 27 inches in height and have an amazing ability to jump from a standstill.

Komondor -- one of the most unique looking breeds this huge dog is covered by masses of ringlets that hang down to the ground. The hair actually looks like a coat of cords and is almost totally weatherproof. The Komondor is almost 27 inches at the shoulders when full-grown and can weight up to 100 pounds. This coat is always white but may have some cream or buff coloring in the cords.

Puli -- another of the herding breeds, the Puli has a distinctive long shaggy coat that drops down to the ground. The outer coat of the Puli will often form cords like the Komondor, but the Puli can be gray, white, black, or rusty black. The Puli is usually about 17 inches when full grown.

Scottish Deerhound -- this large dog is very gently and excellent for almost all living arrangements. It is very tall, almost 32 inches at the shoulders, and has coarse, 3-4 inch hair all over its body. The Scottish Deerhound has a very expressive face and is excellent with children.

Shar-Pei -- also known as the wrinkle dog, this breed has a definite physical appearance that sets it apart. The extra wrinkles on the coat require frequent care and cleaning to avoid skin conditions, but the breed itself is generally healthy and adapts well to most living conditions.

There are many other rare or extreme type dog breeds available throughout the world. If you are considering one of these breeds be sure to research the needs of the breed and make sure that you are able to commit to any special environmental conditions or health concerns that the breed may have. Many of the miniatures or "tea cup" varieties of the toy dog breeds are also extremes of the breeds, but these often have a wide variety of health issues that tend to occur throughout the dog's life. As with all breeds always buy from a reputable breeder to ensure that you get a happy and healthy puppy. <bio>Kelly Marshall writes for Oh My Dog Supplies.
