It may seem like a "contradiction" to suggest that eating "more often" is the answer to getting slimmer, but in reality the idea of eating more often is the only way to speed up weight loss.

Everybody understands what a calorie is -- and everybody "knows" that the best way to lose weight is to begin eating fewer calories per day. Right?

Well, not so fast...

The problem with this way of thinking is that the human body does not burn calories based on a "24 hour day." In fact, the 24 hour day is just an arbitrary interval of time, and it has no bearing on how your body burns calories.

You see, the human body burns calories in "real time" -- or in other words it burns calories as you eat them (it does not burn calories based on a 24 hour day).

This means that your daily caloric intake is almost meaningless when viewed all by itself.

For example, let's take a typical dieter who skips breakfast, but who then eats 900 calories for lunch, 900 calories for dinner and 300 calories for a late night snack -- for a total of 2,100 calories per day.

This dieter falsely "thinks" that their intake of 2,100 calories per day is the deciding factor in whether they lose weight or not -- but in reality the deciding factor is something totally different...

The "deciding factor" lies in how many calories that they eat per "meal."

For example, if that same dieter took those 2,100 calories per day and divided them evenly into 6 meals (350 calories for 6 meals = 2,100 calories) -- then their body would be able to burn much more of those daily calories throughout the day.

Consequently, the dieter would seriously increase their weight loss results if they did this.

Why is this true?

Simple, because your body burns calories as you eat them, and if you feed your body too many calories at any single "sitting" then the excess calories from that sitting cannot get burned and may wind up stored as fat tissue.

However, if you eat fewer calories per "sitting" then your body has a better chance to burn all of those calories, and if it burns all of the calories at any given meal then your body will be forced to begin burning stored fat tissue for any additional energy that it may need before your next meal (which equals fat loss for the dieter).

So if you eat fewer calories per "meal" but increase the number of meals throughout the day, then you can begin losing more weight while still eating the same number of calories per day (you'll just be doing it via a greater number of meals each day).

So when a dieter uses this method of dieting the "overall calories" consumed each day would be the same, but yet the dieter's body would be able to more efficiently burn those calories on a "per meal" basis -- and thus the dieter will lose more weight each day. <bio>To learn more dieting and weight loss tips please visit the site below: http://ForgetCalories.com </bio>

Party drinks such as alcoholic drinks and cocktails that are being offered to you contain an incredible number of calories. These drinks and this little phrase "I'll just have a little=85" can be an absolute killer for your weight loss plans during this holiday if you are not careful.

And I'm not just talking about the food.

These party drinks is the hidden danger and can do more harm than just getting you intoxicated and embarrassingly uninhibited.

Did you know that these drinks contain an incredible number of calories?

Alcohol is the number two most energy-dense food, losing out only to fat. Fat contains 9 calories per gram while alcohol contains 7 calories per gram.

This means that each drink you consume will cause you to take in an alarmingly high number of calories.

Together with their calorie counts, here are some samples of more popular drinks=85

1 glass of Bailey's lrish Cream - 468 calories 1 glass of Margarita - 453 calories 1 glass of Martini - 413 calories 1 glass of Pina Colada - 297 calories 1 glass of Vodka Cranberry - 250 calories 1 glass of Rum and cola - 240 calories 1 glass of Screwdriver - 200 calories 1 mug of beer - 150 calories 1 glass of white wine - 120 calories 1 tequila shot - 100 calories

To put those calorie counts into perspective, having 2 glasses of Margaritas would give you about half of your daily calories requirements. Its 50% from just 2 drinks and that doesn't include the calories from the food, nuts and snacks yet. Once we add those, you can see that it is easy for you to go over the daily calorie requirements and start piling on the pounds.

This doesn't mean that you should stay away from alcoholic drinks. It's just keeping you in mind the huge amount of calories in the drinks.

This holiday, I want to leave you with a couple of useful tips to help to reduce the "guilt factor" in you:

Fill up your glass with lots of ice cubes. The water from the melted ice has zero calories. Use soda water to dilute your drink. This will help to fill you up quicker and means you won't get tipsy too quickly. The most important tip is that you should not use alcoholic drinks to quench you thirst. You should be drinking party drinks for fun. Drink a big glass of water first to quench your thirst. It has zero calories. <bio>If you like this article, you might also like my other must-read weight loss articles at http://www.MyWeightLossNewsletter.com - See You There! </bio>

If you look at any label for any type of food or beverage, you will find out just how many calories or in the product. When it comes to coffee, you start out with zero calories, zero carbohydrates and zero nutritional value. Only when you begin to add the sweeteners, sugar and creamers do the calories in coffee begin to grow. Many people add coffee to their diets because of its stimulating effects. Coffee and the unwanted calories that are in it will give you the energy and endurance to keep going at a fast pace throughout your day. Just how many calories are in your favorite coffee drinks may actually surprise you. Learning about the coffee drinks and the calories included in them will help you adjust the amount you intake while following any diet plan you are on.

Counting Calories In Starbucks Coffee

Everyone seems to love Starbucks, and they have created so many delectable beverages, that once you taste them the calories seem to be unimportant to most of us. However, a person who is dieting needs to be aware of the calories in these coffee drinks. For instance, a Frappucino in a large cup yields an amazing three hundred and thirty-one calories. Thatand#8217;s a lot for a drink that started out at zero. Another example of a high calorie drink is a latte. A tall one has an amazing two hundred and ten calories. Most dieters would agree that these drinks would not be beneficial to their diets, but without doing the research on the calories in coffee drinks there is no way to know what they are actually consuming.

Low Calorie Coffee Tips

When you fix coffee to your liking, chances are you will add calories. There is however ways that you can cut down your intake of calories consumed in coffee. Start by choosing a small cup, either eight or 12 ounces would be fine. When ordering, ask that your coffee be prepared with fat free milk. This can save you from up to 80 grams of fat. Use a sugar substitute instead of sugar. (1 tablespoon of sugar is 15 calories) You should always order coffee without cream, whipped cream, coffee syrups etc. when you are trying to cut back on the calories in your coffee. A good way to limit the calorie intake is to refrain from more than one or two cups of coffee.

Did You Knowand#8230;?

Did you know that in order to burn off the number of calories in one of the fancy coffee house drinks you would have to walk for 1 hour continuously? This would only burn off the coffee drink calories and nothing else. <bio>Roland Jefferson is an online researcher based out of Los Angeles, Calfornia.
When you think about exercise, do you automatically imagine yourself on a treadmill in a gym? Or doing laps in a swimming pool? If so, you might be surprised to know just how many calories you can burn doing everyday activities.

Housework is one chore that everyone has to do at some point. Rather than dread it, proceed briskly through your chores and you can have an excellent workout. A 150 lb person can spend as much as 140 calories by mopping the floor for a half hour. Vacuuming for 30 minutes spends about the same number of calories. Take off another 75 calories by ironing for a half hour.

Outdoor chores also provide great opportunities to burn calories. The same 150 pound person will burn 177 calories pulling weeds for half and hour and another 120 calories mowing the lawn. Because gardening often involves stretching and bending, it offers muscular as well as cardiovascular benefits. Save 300 calories by spending an hour washing your car. Bagging leaves and grass clippings burns 136 calories in 30 minutes.

If you like to entertain, you can make up for that slice of cake by cleaning up after the party. If it takes you an hour, you'll burn over 300 calories. If you wash the dishes as well, you'll burn another 152 calories. If you spend an hour rearranging furniture before and after your party, that's a whopping 450 calories. However, keep in mind that all these activities need to be performed at the same intensity level over time in order to receive the full benefits. Still, even if you only burned half the estimated calories preparing for and cleaning up after your party, that would still be 500 calories worth of cake.

Home improvement tasks can burn calories as well. An hour of indoor painting burns 204 calories. Removing and installing carpet spends calories in 30 minutes. Roofing burns a whopping 400 calories an hour, just be sure you drink a lot of water if you're spending the day up on a hot roof.

Even something as simple as going to the grocery store can be a calorie-burner. A half hour of brisk grocery shopping will spend about 130 calories. If you walk a half hour to the store, subtract another 100 calories from your daily total. Just don't spend all your savings on Oreos.

If all else fails, simply sleeping for 8 hours burns 50 calories. <bio>Kadence Buchanan writes articles for http://yourfitnesssource.net/ - In addition, Kadence also writes articles for http://thenursingcenter.com/ and http://4aginginfo.com/ </bio>

We all know that we "grow in stature" when we take in far more calories than we burn during the day. Taking in calories means eating. What if we could eat the best fat burning foods that actually help us lose weight?

That would be wonderful, wouldn't it?

Those best fat burning foods do exist, and you can eat them to your heart's delight.

Our bodies use energies, i.e., calories, when we digest food. Fat burning foods are those food items that contain fewer calories than what it takes for our bodies to digest them.

That means, when you eat those fat burning foods, you gain the calories that the food contains, your body burns more calories than those in the food to digest the food, so you end up with having used more calories than you took in.

If you only eat the best fat burning foods that I've listed below, you will probably develop some kind of mineral or vitamin deficiency.

So, beware, even though you could lose weight by eating only fat burning foods, you could be doing your body a ton of harm in the process.

They key is to do it in moderation.

Eat the best fat burning foods instead of that big burger, pack of fries, or oily pizza.

Here is a list of ten fat burning foods that you can eat.

Lettuce, grapefruit, spinach, broccoli, turnips, eggplant, lemons, pumpkin, mushrooms, and blackberries.

Now, even though it would have been wonderful if we could eat ourselves thin, it is probably not going to happen.

Our bodies just do not work that way. The body is designed to store excess energy, which we must burn off if we want to lose weight.

Let me tell you girl, you gotta do a little bit of exercise as well. Go for daily walks, it does wonders for burning calories. <bio>Tisha Diaz recommends the fat loss and weight control program at http://www.losefatpro.com/ that will help you get rid of those excess pounds and make you slim and trim. </bio>

Dieting -- in theory and mathematically -- is simple. If you consume fewer calories then your body burns in the course of a day, you will lose weight. Plain and simple. Of course, for most of us this remains a concept that is only successful in theory. In practice, it can be extraordinarily difficult to cut calories while raising the rate at which we burn them through exercise.

For those looking to lose a few pounds or achieve significant results in a short period of time, they will often diet using negative calories. Negative calories exist in such foods that burn more calories to ingest and digest them than exist in the food itself. Many fruits and vegetables contain negative calories and thus they are a staple in most weight loss plans today.

However, keep in mind that diet using negative calories is a temporary approach to lose weight quickly; perhaps for a special event in your life like a wedding or class reunion. Or it can be quiet useful during a time when caloric intake is normally high, such as after the holidays. But embarking on a diet using negative calories is not meant for long term use as it can be dangerous to deny your body certain nutrients for long periods of time; you'll wind up depleting muscle mass rather than fat.

In order to diet using negative calories, do your research. It is imperative that you know and understand the calories that are associated with the foods you are going to include in your diet program. Look for whole foods, vegetables, and fruits. Make a list so that you know exactly what you'll be eating for this short period of time and the calories you will ingest.

Next, determine how many calories you burn during the course of a single day. This will allow you to calculate how many calories you can ingest based upon the number of calories you will burn.

Try to maintain a healthy balance of the foods you are eating, combining fresh vegetables and fruits. Eating only one specific food during your diet using negative calories will leave you feeling depleted of energy as you'll be missing some essential vitamins.

But most importantly, never embark on any weight loss program without consulting a medical professional. Your doctor will best be able to guide you through a diet using negative calories in a way that is healthy for you to achieve your weight loss goals. <bio>For easy to understand, in depth information about weightloss visit our ezGuide 2 http://weightloss.ezguide2.com. </bio>

Think of your body as a giant scale. That scale is a perfect analogy for gaining and losing weight. Think of putting "calories you burn" on one side and "calories you eat" on the other side.

To maintain your current weight, the scale needs to be balanced. If you eat more calories than your body needs, you tip the scale. These extra calories are stored as fat -- on your hips, butt, stomach, chest, face, etc., etc. etc. (feel free to add your personal trouble spot here).

To loose weight, you want to tip the scale in the other direction, so that there is a calorie deficit, not a calorie surplus. To lose one pound of body fat, you have to burn (or not eat) 3500 calories.

There are three ways to lose weight:

1) Increase your metabolism. One way to do this is to gain lean muscle (through strength training). For every pound of muscle you gain, your body burns 50 more calories a day. This means that with more muscle you can eat the same amount and still lose some weight.

2) Eat less. To lose one pound of fat a week, you need to cut 500 calories a day from your diet. With 1000 fewer calories a day you will lose two pounds a week. This may sound like a lot of calories. It's important to know that it is.

3) Workout more. If you just exercise, you would have to walk on a treadmill at 4 MPH for 1.5 hours a day, seven days a week, to lose two pounds of fat a week.

The perfect way to lose weight is to do all three.

If you increase your metabolism, eat less, and workout more, you will lose weight. It will be easier and less painful than drastically cutting back on your calories or becoming a slave to the treadmill. <bio>Nick Irons is a certified personal trainer in Washington, DC.
Anyone who reads information about losing weight is certain to hear a lot of talk about calories. Cutting calories, burning calories, substituting calories =96 all of these and more are frequent topics of discussion for dieters. But how many calories are you currently consuming? What effect will cutting back on calories have on your weight? How much can you eat and still squeeze into a smaller clothing size for your high school reunion in a couple of months? All of these questions and more can be answered using weight loss calculators.

Weight loss calculators use information about your specific situation to make estimations about your diet. For example, by inputting your current height, weight, gender, and level of activity, you can determine how many calories you must consume to maintain your weight. In order to lose weight, you simply have to reduce your calories below that level.

Next, you'll wonder how many calories you should cut. Once again, weight loss calculators can help. You can enter your ideal weight, current calorie level, and either a target date (and the calculator will tell you how many extra calories you'll need to burn a day) or a suggestion for how many calories you'd like to cut (and the calculator will give you an estimated date for reaching your target weight).

Many companies =96 usually those trying to convince you to try the latest diet fad =96 try to make weight loss seem like a nearly mystical process. However, losing weight is a very straightforward proposition when you look at the science of cutting calories.
We can have a diet using negative calories. The main idea is that our body uses more calories to digest some aliments than the calories we know those aliments contain themselves by analyzing the combination of nutritional components of the specific aliments. If we burn more calories than we consume, then we will lose weight.

The theory is in fact very appealing: the body has to consume energy in order to digest the food. For example, an orange has about 50 calories. To process all nutritional components and vitamins that an orange contains, our body will burn more than just 50 calories.

The diet using negative calories is more a solution we can call on in some specific periods, when our body is overwhelmed with nutrition, like holidays, Christmas, New Year's, birthdays, weddings, and less of a solution that can be used on a long term.

Some specialists say that the lost of weight is obtained mostly by losing parts of the muscular tissue, which is not recommended at all.

So if you decide to use the diet with negative calories keep in mind the following:

1 - Make sure it is done in a period your body has already too many calories stored and you won't be affecting your health by doing this.

2 - Ask a medic if you can resist only eating this types of aliments and also ask him the time limit for this diet in your case so you can avoid getting sick.

3 - Try to combine them as much as you can, do not eat just oranges or other fruits that contain citric acid as they are not good for your stomach activity when eaten in huge quantities.

4 - Review your schedule for the days you want to use this diet and make sure you don't have any important or stressful things to do. Stress also causes caloric burn and weight reduction and if it occurs during a diet that weakens the organism you can feel physically powerless. If such a thing happens give up on the diet and eat something with many calories and glucoses fast.

If all above points are checked and passed you can start a negative calories diet and give a try to actually eating something instead of taking slim pills and drinking tea.

For more information on Diets and Weight Loss visit: http://www.ydiets.com <bio>http://www.ydiets.com is an excellent place to find diet and weight loss resources and articles.
Calories have made quite the name for themselves over the past couple years. Some experts recommend you count them often, and some say it doesn't matter. Ultimately, calories are what help your body function properly and give you energy. Ironically calories can also help you pack on the pounds. With everything there's got to be some sort of balance.

If you're looking to lose weight,, maintain your weight or decrease your weight there is a quick solution for calculating your individual caloric needs. The holidays are just around the corner so if you don't want to wake up New Years Day and say "Oh my gosh I've gained 20 pounds!" then keep reading.

In order to figure out how many calories you're eating every day to maintain your current weight.

Multiply your current weight by 12, which will equal the number of calories needed daily to maintain your current weight.

Equation for maintaining weight (current weight) X 12 = (number of calories)

As an example lets say you weigh 150 pounds, what you would want to do is multiply the 150 by 12, which will equal 1,800 calories.

So then the 1,800 calories is the number of calories you need every day to maintain your 150 pounds. If you weigh 125 pounds, the equation would be 125 X 12 = 1,500 call, which means that a 125-pound person only requires 1,500 calories a day to maintain her 125 pound weight.

You still with me?

Lets take a look at it now from a weight loss standpoint. Keep in mind that decreasing your calories alone will not get you the desired results you must include some sort of exercise into your lifestyle.

A simple technique for losing weight is to reduce your caloric intake by 250 calories a day and burn 250 calories per day from exercise. When all is said and done you're able to lose 500 calories a day.

Recall that 3,500 calories make up 1 pound of fat. So if you stuck with losing 500 calories a day you'll be able to lose 1 pound of fat per week with very little effort.

Here's the equation: You're taking in 250 less calories per day and increasing your physical exercise to burn 250 calories per day. This equals to 500 calories lost per day, multiplied by 7 days per week = 3,500 calories.

500 cal X 7 days = a decrease of 3500 cal and a loss of 1 pound.

If you wanted to gain weight in a healthy manner you would want to increase your caloric intake. Add an extra 500 calories into your eating plan and within a week you'll gain a pound.

Keep in mind that you should still exercise and consume nutritious foods rather than gobbling down crap that will make you gain weight and make you unhealthy.

Remember to take your time and don't have the instant gratification mindset. Slowly making your caloric adjustments is the safest and most effective way to lose weight and maintain your weight loss forever.

The reason is because slow and steady weight loss conditions your body to make permanent changes in your eating habits, and regular physical exercise conditions your body to expect consistent physical activity every day.<bio>Marci Lall is the Top Forest Hill Fitness Trainer.
Want a fast way to get thin? Check out the 1200 calorie diet.

The 1200 calorie diet has become popular with people with all sorts of dietary needs. It is a simple diet, involving moderating your food intake by monitoring you caloric intake. Before you begin this diet, however, you should determine if it is right for you.

The calorie is the basic unit of measurement of energy derived from food. Each calorie represents one unit of energy. If you consume more calories than your body needs, your body will store them as fat. This is a defense mechanism in case your body needs energy later when calories are not available. If you are overweight, counting calories is one way to maintain your health and lose weight fast.

The first thing to consider when considering the 1200 calorie diet is whether it will meet your body's nutritional needs. Don't use this diet if your body truly needs more than 1200 calories a day to function. The best way to calculate how many calories your body needs is to measure your height and weight. With those two numbers you can calculate the number of calories your body needs each day. If you want to lose a certain amount of weight, you need to calculate how many calories/day less you need to consume.

The way that the 1200 calorie diet works is that by eating only 1200 calories per day your body will use the stored caloric units of energy instead of just the ones you are eating. By doing this, you get rid of fat (the stored calories) and your body works more efficiently.

The 1200 calorie diet has a few rules you need to follow. The first is that you will have to change your eating habits. You will need to smaller meals more frequently, snacking throughout the day. This allows your body to maintain an influx of energy throughout the day without allowing you to ever feel overly full. The second thing you need to do is change the type of food you are eating. This means that you should eat more fruits and vegetables and less junk food.

Having accomplished that, you will need to determine what else you can eat by using a calorie counter. There are several online resources available that can help you in counting calories. You can also enlist the aid of a nutritionist. With these resources you can determine how many calories are in each serving of the foods you like to eat. They can help you to determine which foods are filling without being high in calories.

If you want to get rid of those stored calories in your body, then going on the 1200 calorie diet might be right for you. If you are taller or have a larger than average body frame, you can adjust the number of calories in the diet to make it fit your needs. The 1200 calorie diet can help you to lose weight quickly, eat healthier, and make better food choices. The 1200 calorie diet is one way you can start living a healthier life. <bio>Barbara Jones contributes to several online magazines, including http://healthy-line.com and http://info-healthy.com </bio>

First it needs to be established that, yes, there are calories in wine. Indeed, almost nything you eat or drink contains calories unless it is made of almost entirely of water or chemicals. However, calories should be considered fuel for the body and a body will not function well without an adequate supply of fuel. That said, the calories in wine need to be counted if you are watching your weight.

Wine As A Fuel Source

Typically, there are around 80=96100 calories in an average-sized glass of wine. An average-sized glass is considered to be 125=96150 mls (around 4 fl oz), so in a 750ml bottle there are roughly five to six glasses of wine at most. There are red wine glasses available today that can hold almost a full bottle of wine so it is important to consider the size of the glass when counting the calories in wine. A 750ml bottle of wine will generally contain between 300 and 500 calories.

Not all wines contain the same number of calories. Some of the drier white wines, for example, Sauvignon Blanc, white Zinfandel, and Chablis are at the lower end of the calorie scale =96 around 80 calories per glass. Red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Merlot tend to be in the mid range =96 around 95 calories per glass. Champagne contains around 100=96105 calories per glass.

The really high calorie wines are the fortified wines like Port, Madeira, Muscatel and Tokay. These wines typically contain between 165 and 185 calories per glass. However, it should be noted that these wines are usually served in smaller glasses.

Having established the existence of calories in wine it is important to count them in your daily dietary intake if you enjoy a glass of wine or two with a meal. However, it is also worthwhile to keep the number of calories in perspective. Compared to a cheeseburger the calories in wine appear almost negligible. A cheeseburger can have up to1000 calories and can include as much fat as a body might require in a month! At least wine is fat free. The calories come from the sugar and the carbohydrates. So wine in moderation can usually be included in a calorie-controlled diet.

The Benefits of Wine

Regardless of the calories contained in wine, there are many documented benefits to drinking it in moderation. Wine can enhance the food we eat and act as an aid to digestion. Red wine in particular has potential benefits in that it is believed to help protect against certain forms of cancer and heart disease. Studies have shown a reduction of 30%=9650% in heart disease of people who regularly drink a glass of red wine each night and a 20% reduction in death from certain cancers.

The health benefits of drinking wine are often attributed to the so-called "French Paradox", whereby the French =96 even with a diet high in fat =96 don't suffer from heart attacks at the same rate as North Americans. This has been attributed to their moderate, though steady, wine consumption.

So perhaps it's time to stop focusing on the calories in wine and instead focus on the health benefits ... in moderation, of course. <bio>Alison Stevens is an online author and maintains several wine interest websites including http://www.wine-globe.com/blog/ to benefit wine lovers with tips, techniques and information about wine and wine collecting. </bio>

Calories - two out of three American adults need to eat fewer. A calorie is a measure of energy-producing potential. We gain body fat if we consistently eat more than we need and weight loss occurs if we eat less than we need.

The challenge arises when we fall into the "Calorie Trap." We are often tricked into our quest for energy balance (caloric intake = caloric expenditure). We wonder why when we wake up our pants don't fit anymore or how can I possibly gain weight when I am eating very little. The "calorie trap" strikes again.

We underestimate the number of calories that we take in by not being aware of how calorie dense particular foods really are or what an appropriate serving size really is. This particular dilemma is leaving America heavier now than it was ten years ago.

The key to weight loss and avoiding the "calorie trap" is educating you by reading labels and making intelligent food choices. You should stop thinking about carbohydrates, fats and proteins, Atkins, or the South Beach Diet. You should start becoming aware of the caloric content of the food you are eating.

A few examples of how easily it is to fall into the "Calorie Trap" are shown below. You can avoid this trap with a little help of education and label reading and weight loss will be much easier for you.

Which of the following has more calories per serving?

1. Average bowl of Grape Nuts or Frosted Flakes? 2. English muffin with jam or a dry bagel? 3. 5 oz. of MandM's or 5 oz. of yogurt raisins?

You will be surprised! Give it your best guess.

An average bowl of Grape Nuts has 600 calories vs. an average bowl of Frosted Flakes at 220 calories.

That morning dry bagel has 400 calories to the English muffin and jam's 170 calories.

The MandM's have 675 calories, while the yogurt raisins also have 675 calories.

Surprised?

Hopefully this will help you get thinking about calories and weight loss in the correct way. Paying attention to what you are putting into your mouth will help you see a difference in your waistline. Begin today!

Starting a food journal is the most effective way to become aware of your food choices, portion size, and calories you consume. This will answer all the questions and provide clear insight into your eating habits and patterns. <bio>If you like this article, you might also like my other must-read weight loss articles at http://www.MyWeightLossNewsletter.com - See You There! </bio>

We all know that in order to lose weight, we need to burn more calories than we consume. Why is that so? What exactly are calories? How are we to burn more calories?

Well, a calorie is simply a form of heat measurement. It is the amount of energy that is required to raise one milliliter of water by one degree Celsius. Calorie measures the amount of heat or energy that is released when you burn the food you have consumed.

Calories are actually burnt through a very complicated process that oxidizes food to its basic components. Take for example, if you burn sugar, the sugar will be transformed into carbon dioxide in a chemical reaction. However in the human body, the food burnt is converted to forms of energy.

So therefore when you consume food, the food is stored as body fat or glycogen (glycogen is mostly stored in liver and muscles) to be burnt for energy. Your body's preference is to burn glycogen first and then body fat when you expand energy such as when you are performing an exercise routine.

The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you will burn. This is because muscle cells are metabolically active where fat cells are not because fat cells do not have much function and they are not active. Fat cells just sits there making you look ugly and may cause health complications.

Different food category carries different amount of calories. For example, there are about 4 calories in a gram of protein or carbohydrate. However, each gram of fat contains 9 calories and so the more fat you eat, the more calories your body will store and you will have a harder time burning them off if you want to lose weight. Empty calories like alcohol should be avoided if you want to lose weight because each gram of alcohol contains 7 calories.

Some people raise their metabolic rate (calorie burning rate) by eating several small meals a day instead of usual three big meals. By eating more frequently, your insulin level is also regulated and less insulin will then be converted to body fat.

So how can you burn more calories and also raise your metabolism in order to be a natural calorie burner? The answer is to build more muscles, eat frequent small meals and embark on an exercise regimen to expand energy and thus burning more calories in the process. By doing so, you will be losing weight naturally in a healthy way. <bio>Chris Chew is a fitness personal trainer and author of "Burn Fat Build Muscles Fast". Such restaurants are available everywhere. It's the handiest restaurant accessible in the neighborhood.

Those who can't cook due to their tight schedule mostly order their meal from fast food restaurants. They just ring the delivery service, and the food will be delivered in just a few minutes, ready to be eaten. What an easy life.

Apart from its convenience, fast food is also known as unhealthy and a weight gainer. High calories, sodium and fat are the culprits of its unhealthiness. It's often lack of important vitamins and minerals too.

If you are among those who are reluctant to eat fast food, here are some tricks to help you eat nutritious and less fattening fast food.

* Don't eat big size food (there are some restaurant selling big size food, such as McDonald's Big Mac). * Choose the healthiest foods available in the menus. This will help you maintain your diet, as you will not be tempted to unhealthy food. * Eliminate high fat and calorie sauces and dressing of your food. * Instead of taking sodas, change it with water or low fat milk * Eat not more than 1,500 calories a day

Here are some menus for the day which consist of less than 1,500 calories:

Breakfast

Your 300-350-calorie breakfast: * Muffin (150 calories) plus scrambled eggs (16 calories) * Croissant with egg and cheese (350 calories).

Avoid sausage as it will increases 260 calories * Egg sandwich (300 calories).

All sandwiches usually contain 300-350 calories.

Avoid bacon as it has more than 300 calories.

Lunch

Your 400-450-calorie lunch: * Grilled chicken (400 calories) * Four chicken nuggets and small portion of french fries (420 calories) * Grilled potatoes with chili sauce and cheese (395 calories) * Sandwich with chicken inside (300 calories) and salad with low fat dressing ( 125 calories) * Individual chicken popcorn (450 calories) * Two slices of thin flat slight cheese pizza (200 calories each slice). The most important thing in consuming pizza is to eat thin flat slight pizza with less topping to minimize the calories (unnecessary for vegetables topping).

Dinner

Your 500-calorie dinner: * Plain hamburger, 1 portion of french fries (children's package) and diet drink (530 calories) * Three slices of pizza by reducing the fatty cheese (500 calories). * Original chicken breast and mashed potatoes (500 calories) * Meatloaf (310 calories) with potatoes salad ( 200 calories) * Marinated grilled chicken sandwich (470 calories without mayonnaise)

If you want to make another choice, here is the list of some healthy fast food you might want to choose: *Single hamburger (regular or children's size) *Fruit or fruit and yogurt *Whole wheat rolls *Baked potato (with vegetables instead of cheese, butter or sour cream) *Low fat deli sandwiches on wheat bread or on pita bread *Wraps on whole wheat tortillas (without dressing) <bio>Riana Lance writes about health in some publications.
There seems to be a lot of controversy going around lately about whether or not a sauna will help you to burn calories and lose weight. Some people think that the whole thing is just a myth, and some people swear by it. A lot of the sauna manufacturing companies will tell you that saunas definitely help you lose weight and calories, but this information is not as believable coming from someone who wants to sell you their sauna! Some of these companies' websites even have so called "doctors" who will answer any questions you may have about their saunas, but these people are employed by the company, and are still just trying to sell you their sauna.

Sitting inside of a hot sauna for any period of time will make you sweat. Sweating releases fluid from your body. The longer you sweat, the more fluid you will lose, and this fluid loss is really the only weight loss that you see from sauna use. Once you are done with the sauna for the day, it is highly recommended that you drink lots of water after you've cooled off. This basically puts the lost fluid right back inside of your body.

Many sauna companies boldly state that just twenty or thirty minutes inside of their sauna will burn anywhere from three hundred to one thousand calories. This is simply not possible. People are always looking for an easier way to burn calories than exercise, but exercise is the only efficient way to really get rid of calories. Sitting in a sauna for thirty minutes may burn up to three hundred calories, but this type of calorie burn will not have the same effect on your body as the calories burned during exercise.

Calories burnt off while sitting in a sauna are just calories burnt. There is no muscle building, no fat shedding, no after burn (VERY important!) and no muscle strengthening or toning. When you choose to burn calories through exercise, you not only burn more calories, but you also build and tone your muscle, and you get rid of the excess fat on your body. If you choose the right kinds of aerobics exercises, you will also get the added benefit of after burn. After burn is what the body does after you have finished exercising. After burn can burn calories up to fourteen hours after you have stopped exercising. If the only reason you are using a sauna is to lose weight, there are much better things you can be doing to achieve your goal.

Saunas are great for all kinds of other things though, and they can even help you to feel better about yourself. They will improve your skin, your health and your body. If they are used properly and safely, saunas will do a lot for you. I suggest using one at least two or three times a week, and I also recommend a good, weekly exercise routine for those who want to lose weight. <bio>Home saunas are believed to produce numerous health benefits and provide a relaxing spa experience.
You're at your favorite cocktail lounge or nightclub unwinding with friends after work. You've already eaten dinner and now you look forward to enjoying good friends, laughter, and your favorite cocktail drink.

Before you order your next mojito or margarita, stop and think about the number of calories hiding inside that cocktail glass. That's right - calories. If you are health conscious, or on a weight loss plan, your favorite drink might not be so friendly towards your waistline.

It's entertaining to watch the bartender mix up a drink and pour it into a fancy glass, but what exactly is in that cocktail shaker?

Unfortunately, the answer is plenty of sugar and calories. Did you know that some cocktail drinks are as fattening as eating a Big Mac? The reason for this is that alcohol and the mixers added to it, contain lots of calories.

A one ounce serving of 80-proof alcohol contains 90 calories. Now think of what happens when you add sugar-laden cola, simple syrup, pre-made mixes, and flavored cream. Most likely, you and your friends will have more than one of these fattening drinks during your evening out.

If you enjoy cocktails regularly, you are unknowingly packing on the pounds. How much? Well, here's a list of the top 10 most fattening drinks from the cocktail menu:

1) Long Island Ice Tea - 780 calories. What makes it fattening? Five kinds of alcohol (vodka, tequila, rum, gin, triple sec), sweetened premix and cola.

2) Margarita - 740 calories. What makes it fattening? Tequila, triple sec, sweetened premix.

3) Pina Colada - 644 calories. What makes it fattening? Rum, coconut milk, sweetened premix.

4) White Russian - 425 calories. What makes it fattening? Vodka, coffee liquer, heavy cream.

5) Mai Tai - 350 calories. What makes it fattening? Two kinds of rum (light and dark), crème de almond, triple sec, pineapple juice, sweetened premix.

6) Champagne Cocktail - 250 calories. What makes it fattening? Champagne, cognac, sugar.

7) Fog Cutter - 225 calories. Four kinds of alcohol (rum, gin, brandy, sherry), orange juice, orgeat syrup.

8) Gin/Vodka and Tonic - 200 calories. What makes it fattening? Gin or vodka, sugar-laden tonic water.

9) Mojito - 160 calories. What makes it fattening? Rum, sugar, club soda, sugar water.

10) Cosmopolitan - 150 calories. What makes it fattening? Vodka, triple sec, cranberry juice, lime syrup.

To cut down on cocktail calories, keep things simple. For instance, you can order a vodka on the rocks with a splash of soda water or fresh squeezed juice. Ask your bartender for low calorie drink suggestions. Enjoying a drink or two doesn't have to ruin your figure. <bio>© Donna Monday Mmmm...
Most of us now know that resistive training helps you build lean muscle tissue. In return, that lean muscle allows your body to burn more calories not only during exercise but also when your body is at a resting state. So, if your interested in burning more calories during your workout and throughout the day, follow this simple guide:

1. Choose exercises that target multiple body parts when you are training. Pick a small muscle group and a large muscle group. For example, I plan to work on arms and legs today. So instead of splitting these two workouts up I will combine them with one effective exercise. Using an exercise like the lunge allows me to do this and helps me burn more calories in less time.

As you perform the lunge, you are going to add a bicep curl on the downward lunge motion to train the biceps, quadriceps and gluteals all at the same time. The lunge is also a great way to get some cardio work done as it is a very dynamic exercise that requires you to concentrate on posture, balance and coordination.

2. Use a fitness ball during dumbbell exercises. Instead of sitting or lying on a bench, try performing exercises like chest flies, curls and shoulder press on a fitness ball. This helps you burn more calories because the unstable ball forces your body to activate more muscles in your core and legs to maintain balance on the ball.

3. Use "high intensity interval training" to boost fat loss and burn more calories. Recent studies have shown that interval training can stimulate your metabolism far more AFTER the workouts than lower intensity training. This means you continue to burn more calories and fat for long periods after you're done training. Not so with low intensity training. If you want to read more on interval training I recommend you check out Metabolic Surge or Burn The Fat programs.

Be creative. Think of all the exercises you currently do and adapt them to multi-muscle exercises. You will also have a "brand new" exercise routine to help you get out of that workout rut!

Burn More Calories. <bio>Richard Syner is a physical therapist who enjoys helping others reach their health and fitness goals.
High protein foods are great for packing on extra muscle. To make sure that your diet is filled with muscle-building proteins, it is extremely important to consider which high protein foods you should consume during your daily eating routine. To help you select the best high protein foods for your diet, we've compiled a list of some of the most protein-packed foods that you can find in your average grocery store.

You will notice that the list covers a broad variety of high protein foods. This was done intentionally so that you can compare food types and have more options to add to your daily meals.

The list:

(all nutrition estimates are based on standard single servings)

Peanut butter (2 tbsp)

Protein- 8 g

Calories- 188

Fat- 16 g

Raw almonds (19 pieces)

Protein- 7 g

Calories- 180

Fat- 14 g

Almond butter (1 tbsp)

Protein- 2 g

Calories- 101

Fat- 9 g

Skinless chicken breast (1 cup)

Protein- 38 g

Calories- 258

Fat- 10.4

Ground beef (90% lean, 3 oz)

Protein- 23 g

Calories- 182

Fat- 9 g

Ground turkey (3 oz)

Protein- 22 g

Calories- 193

Fat- 11 g

Salmon (half fillet)

Protein- 39 g

Calories- 367

Fat- 22 g

Tuna (canned, 1 cup)

Protein- 39 g

Calories- 179

Fat- 1 g

Deli turkey (1 oz)

Protein- 4 g

Calories- 31

Fat- 1 g

Findings:

High protein foods vary substantially in protein, fat, and calorie content per serving. Some of the best high protein foods have high fat counts; however, it is important to consider that not all fats are bad for you, and some can be very beneficial to your diet- even if weight loss is your top priority. Almonds, for example, are rich in omega three fatty acids but low in saturated fats.

In general, if you are looking for an efficient way to increase your protein count but keep your calorie and fat intakes minimal, than fish and lean meats are an effective option. Canned tuna (hold the mayo) tops the list as the most efficient protein source. Skinless chicken breasts, deli turkey, ground turkey, and lean ground beef are also highly efficient high protein foods. <bio>A.J.
One of the main reasons why so many people have become overweight in the West is due to their eating too many calories. The consumption of more calories than are burned each day means that the body stores the extra calories as fat. The modern diet certainly allows a person to eat well beyond the calories they need to maintain their weight.

It is very informative to compare our consumption of calories with that of 100 years ago. In those days, the average person consumed 3,500 calories a day, which is approximately the same as we eat now. However, whereas in the early 1900's, most of the calories consumed were carbohydrates, and there was considerably less fat, modern fast food meals consist of almost 50% fat, and fat is a big part of the modern diet. In addition, the 1900's folk did a lot of exercise. They were more active in their work, and their hobbies also made them exercise more. In contrast, modern work environments encourage sedentary habits, and their hobbies tend to revolve around computers and television. As a consequence, while the 1900's people's calories were burned as fuel that day, most of our calorie consumption ends up being stored as fat. Even exercise can only go so far if calorie consumption remains at previous levels, without the general level of activity.

As our working habits have changed, so have our calorie requirements. The average person now needs around 2000-2500 calories a day to keep them at their present weight. The best way to work out exactly how much you should be eating to maintain your present waistline is by using a bmr, which is the basal metabolic rate -- the amount of calories you burn every day, even if you sleep for 24 hours. People who weigh more actually have a larger BMR than those who look slimmer, and a reduction in their calorie intake, even if the calories still total more than that eaten by a thinner person, will help them lose weight. This is the method used in most dietician's and doctors clinics.

The important factor to remember when considering how many calories you need to eat each day is that is does not matter so much what you eat, quite so much as how much you eat. Of course, anyone who eats a diet solely of fat will not get slim, no matter what some diet books tell you. However, neither is one cupcake going to sink your entire weight-loss plan. Sensible dieting -- that is, a diet in which all of the food groups are eaten in appropriate quantities -- lasts much longer than starvation diets and fad diets. Going on to a very low-calorie diet for long periods of time will cause your metabolism to slow down -- the opposite of what you want. If you find that you reach a weight, and cannot loose any more, then you will need to amend your diet.

On a diet, you will find that your BMR will fall, so that a calorie intake that once helped you to lose weight is now keeping you from losing any more. Rather than just do more exercise (which has a limit on how much more you can do), you need to alter again the amount of calories you are consuming. A diet with limited calories will work for a short period, but the body will adjust to the new diet, and stop losing weight. A sensible diet, worked out using BMR index, and a gradual reduction in food intake, is the best way of managing weight loss. <bio>Discover free how to get a 6-pack of washboard abs at http://www.burnthefatfeedmuscle.com </bio>
