We advertise on search engines. If you are reading this article on-line, it is a good chance that you use the internet on a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/daily+basis" rel="tag">daily basis</a> to find what you need - doesn't everybody? You can tell from the title of this article that the answer to that question is "no". There is still a significant segment of the population that still aren't yet internet users, let alone skilled at using the web to find what they need. <br /><br /> Ponder these statistics for a moment: <br /><br /> US - Population: 299,093,237  US - Internet users as of Jan/06: 205,326,680 <br /><br /> That means 68.6% of the population use the internet. <br /><br /> (Information from Nielsen/NetRatings, published on InternetWorldStats.com) <br /><br /> According to this information there are almost 94 Million Americans (or 31.4% of the population) who are not internet users. Of course some of these people are going to be too young or too old, but even removing the approximately 46 Million Americans who are either above 75 or below age 10 you are left with 48 Million Americans (or 16% of the population, data from 2000 US Census) in key-buying demographics that do not rely on the internet for their product and service searches. But what about the people who don't come up with the idea to use your service on their own. The lowly little postcard worked for him in a HUGE way. <br /><br /> With this in mind, here are some tips for your own postcard advertising: <br /><br /> 1) Remember to use the rules of good sales copy -- the primary one being your need to offer benefits to customers instead of just telling them about the features in your products and services. <br /><br /> 2) Always try to spell out a few outstanding benefits on your postcard using <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/bullet+points" rel="tag">bullet points</a>. <br /><br /> 3) Offer a desirable gift or premium of some sort. <br /><br /> 4) Make your postcards stand out. Use solar-yellow or goldenrod color with black type. (A few direct marketers I've spoken with say this generates higher responses than any other color schemes they've tested.) <br /><br /> 5) Use follow-up mailings to customers who respond to mailings so you can create your own in-house mailing list. Then develop a relationship with these individuals. Get them to "know you, like you, and trust you." <br /><br /> 6) Periodically send your "best" customers special offers or discounts, simply for being your "best" customers. <br /><br /> 7) Always put a headline on your postcards. <br /><br /> 8) If you discover postcard advertising works for your particular business then do it regularly =85 like clockwork. <br /><br /> 9) Don't assume postcards only work for lower-priced items or services. One robotics company I read about mailed 250 postcards to a very targeted group of engineers and it resulted in a quarter-million dollars worth of sales. <br /><br /> 10) Postcard advertising can be used for sequential mailings in a full-blown direct marketing campaign. The last one, for example, might contain a message like =85 "This is your LAST chance to take advantage of this offer." <br /><br /> 11) Keep the sentences in your postcard advertising short and to the point. And only promote one major offer per postcard mailing. <br /><br /> 12) Use first-class stamps on your postcards. That way, if anyone on your mailing list has moved, his or her postcard will be returned. Remove those names from your in-house mailing list to keep it clean. <br /><br /> 13) Make sure you put all of your contact info - - including website - - on the postcard. <br /><br /> 14) Use postcard mailing services for convenience. Is it the ability to persuasively speak about your services? Perhaps it's a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/killer+marketing" rel="tag">killer marketing</a> tactic that I keep under wraps. Or is it more a matter of persistence and commitment? <br /><br /> Well, all of those are very important. But there is one <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/marketing+idea" rel="tag">marketing idea</a> that is the most important of all. <br /><br /> It might be exemplified best in this story I heard years ago. <br /><br /> Two friends were talking about another friend who was a great <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/fish" rel="tag">fish</a>erman. They related stories about how he always caught more fish than everyone else, yet he didn't really do anything different than other fishermen did. <br /><br /> He used a similar boat, the same fishing rods and lures. He fished in the same places and at the same times of day. So why in the heck did he always catch more fish? What was his secret? <br /><br /> Well, his secret was pretty simple: He <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/love" rel="tag">love</a>d fishing. <br /><br /> If you love what you do, you'll always be better at it. You'll find subtle ways to do things that others wouldn't even think of. You'll read more about it. You'll put your heart and soul into it. <br /><br /> So when it comes to marketing your services, I promise that you'll get better results if you love marketing yourself. But how do you do that? What if you don't like marketing at all? <br /><br /> Let me tell you another story. <br /><br /> I once worked with a writer who needed to market herself. But the first time we met, she told me she hated networking and wouldn't call people she didn't know. <br /><br /> So I asked her what she did love. <br /><br /> She told me that she loved her <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/siberian+husky" rel="tag">Siberian Husky</a>, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/mutombo" rel="tag">Mutombo</a>. She then tied the pictures into themes about corporate writing. <br /><br /> Yes, it sounds like a stretch, but the mailings were an amazing success. They were fun, attention-getting and different. People started calling her. And she generated some very big clients with this wacky idea of putting her dog on her mailings. <br /><br /> She was doing what she loved. She found a marketing approach that she could really get into. And it was a huge success. <br /><br /> So what do you love? What would you enjoy doing? What could you put your heart and soul into? <br /><br /> In my Fast Track Marketing Model, I point out that there are essentially three effective marketing strategies or vehicles for Independent Professionals: Networking, Publishing and Speaking. But there are infinite variations on these three. My client used a form of publishing through direct mail. <br /><br /> When I started my business, I started with networking. But my style is to be an initiator, not just a participant. So I started my own networking groups. I met a lot of people and I loved bringing people together. So this was very successful. <br /><br /> Only a month or two after buying my first Macintosh, I created a monthly newsletter. I also happened to love design and project-oriented things. So I had a lot of fun with this, and also had very good results. The newsletter also pulled people into the networking events. <br /><br /> Finally, at these events, I had the opportunity to make presentations and discovered that I loved to be in the front of a group. (I think I'm a frustrated stand-up comedian at heart.) It turned out that speaking was the most effective marketing tactic of all for me. <br /><br /> I was lucky. I found three areas of marketing that I loved. But the key was that I found my particular way of doing these marketing activities that fit with my style and personality.
