A bunion is a bony lump on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe. This may be an isolated problem, but it is often associated with other problems with the shape of the foot.

The most common cause of bunions is footwear that does not have enough width to fit the toes in their natural position. High heels are particularly to blame as they squash the toes into the narrowest part of the front of the shoe.

Bunions are more common in women than men, and a tendency to get them can run in families. They are occasionally associated with arthritis of the joint at the base of the big toe but many people with bunions have no underlying joint problems.

There are very few occasions where bunion surgery is the only option. The main alternative to surgery is to adapt your shoes so that they fit comfortably.

The options depend on how severe the bunion is. Using extra-wide-fitting shoes from a good- quality shoe shop may be enough. If not, the surgical appliances department at the hospital will be able to give you advice about stretching shoes or ordering a custom-made pair to fit the shape of your feet comfortably.

These shoes are not usually particularly fashionable, but they avoid all the risks of an operation and are almost always an effective treatment.

Bunions do not get better without surgery. Most bunions will get worse with time. Wearing sensible footwear will usually prevent them from getting rapidly worse. The skin over the bunion can become inflamed where it rubs on the inside of the shoe.

Very occasionally it can get infected and cause an ulcer. Aching in the foot is common but this is due to other related problems with how the foot works rather than the bunion itself.

A variety of anaesthetic techniques are possible. Your anaesthetist will discuss the options with you and will recommend the best form of anaesthesia for you.

There is a wide range of different operations for bunions, depending on the size of the bunion, the amount of deformity of the big toe, other associated problems with how the foot works, and any arthritis. The operation will involve removing the bunion.

It may involve other procedures to cut and realign the bones of the big toe and to tighten stretched ligaments around the big-toe joint. You may also need to have an operation to straighten one or more of the other toes at the same time.

Your surgeon will discuss with you how much surgery you will need. At the end of the operation, your surgeon will close the skin with stitches.

Bunions are very common. For those people who are not able to cope with adapting their footwear, surgery gives a good chance of making their feet fit comfortably into normal shoes and improving the cosmetic appearance.

Surgery is usually safe and effective. However, complications can happen. You need to know about them to help you make an informed decision about surgery. Knowing about them will also help to detect and treat any problems early. <bio>Thinking about going for bunion surgery?
Most commonly blamed on wearing narrow, tight and high heel shoes, many American women are now paying the price of beauty and style with bunions on their feet. Medical terminology calls this foot problem a Hallux Valgus, but we all know it as a bunion...and a pain!

With this problem of the forefoot, a bunion appears as a prominent bump on the inside of the foot around the big toe joint. The bump is usually red, swollen and painful on the inside of the foot in and around the big toe joint. The bump that you see is actually the bone protruding towards the inside of the foot. With a bunion the base of the big toe will over time get larger and will stick out even more. Also with time, the big toe can continue to drift toward the rest of the toes and in some cases the big toe can actually come to rest over or under the second toe. Without treatment the second toe can even put pressure on the third toe changing its alignment as well.

So much for looking fabulous in those stylish high heels! Yes, there are some hereditary factors to bunion development, but most bunions are indeed blamed on shoes. With that little piece of knowledge, it shouldn't be a far stretch to learn that 90% of all bunions are found in women. Not only can ill-fitting shoes can cause problems such as bunions, they can also cause problems such as corns, hammertoes and calluses.

Even though prevention is the best treatment of all, there are treatment options available. Surgery is certainly an option if walking has become painful and often is the only treatment that will ultimately get rid of the pain associated with bunions. The goal of surgery is to realign bones, ligaments, tendons and nerves so that the big toe can be back in its normal position relieving the pressure on the other toes and the pain of the bunion.

Before considering surgery though making changes early in the formation of a bunion such as avoiding shoes with sharp pointy toes, a tight narrow toe box and heels three inches or higher is a great place to start. Anti-inflammatory medications, cold compresses, soaking the feet in Epsom salts for comfort, cortisone injections, protective bunion pads, orthotics, as well as having your shoes professionally stretched are other helpful treatment options.

Giving up some high fashion, especially if you have a genetic tendency towards the development of bunions, may be just the thing you need in order to prevent bunion formation in the first place. It seems a small price to pay. <bio>For more important information on http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com visit sore-foot-remedies.com where you will find advice on common foot pain causes such as http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com/foot_corns.html, ingrown toenails, and other articles. </bio>

Bunions or Hallux Valgus as this condition is commonly called in the medical community are a source of foot pain and deformity in many Americans today...particularly women.

One of the most common causes of problems of the forefoot, bunions appear as a bump at the base joint (metatarsophalangeal joint) of the big toe and often are swollen and sore. The big toe can drift over towards the remaining toes as the bunion enlarges, particularly placing pressure on the second toe. A bunion develops most often in women and is thought to be primarily related to wearing ill-fitting shoes.

Why then do women wear ill-fitting shoes since this habit can lead not only to the development of a bunion but to the development of other foot maladies such as corns, calluses, and such? Well, the answer is quite simple...to look fashionable! Seems to me, if the shoe makers of the world really wanted to have a booming business then they would design fashionable women's shoes that looked phenomenal and felt like house slippers when you put them on. But, I digress.

Even though bunions can be hereditary, most often bunions are related to wearing shoes that are too tight, too narrow and too high causing pressure on the natural anatomy of the forefoot. The joint at the base of the toe flexes with every step and continued pressure on this area causes the joint to continue to enlarge causing increasing pressure, pain, swelling and redness.

The skin over the bunion can become quite sensitive and red and may even become infected. Bunions can even get to the point when walking is difficult and surgical intervention is the only resolution.

A bunionette or Tailor's Bunion can develop on the joint of the little toe along the outside of the foot. Again the cause of the bunion is the same, most often poor fitting shoes resulting in increased pressure on the forefoot, but in this case the little toe drifts inward towards the big toe.

The very best treatment for a bunion is prevention. If that is not possible, then the next best treatment for a bunion is to wear shoes that have a wide toe box allowing ample room for the toes to move around and to avoid getting pressed together causing them to overlap.

Warm Epsom salt soaks, bunion pads, bunion night shields, bunion bandages, and even orthotics can provide temporary relief of pain but it is making the decision to wear properly fitting shoes which is the best treatment decision of all. <bio>For more important information on foot pain be sure to visit http://sore-foot-remedies.com where you will find advice and tips on common foot pain causes such as plantar fasciitis, hammertoe, and other articles that you can view at http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com </bio>

As we tend to spend a large amount of our time on our feet it is quite normal to develop various types of foot problems. These foot problems can be in many cases very painful requiring special treatment from a foot doctor.

In order to treat these foot problems it is best to identify what is causing your foot pain. With Bunions the problem is that your big toe is enlarged and it is very swollen, tender and painful. The causes of Bunions is as of yet unknown. It is known however that you can inherit Bunions from your family. Ill fitting shoes can also give bunions. There's also the fact the Bunions can develop without any known cause.

You can also develop foot problems in you heels. While this heel pain is very common, it can begin without any injury being caused to the foot. You will usually feel the pain under the heel of the foot. It is generally present when you are standing or walking. The time that the pain is the worst is when you are getting out of bed. The cause of these foot problems is that the tissues on the sole of the foot have become inflamed. The place where the inflammation is the worst is the heel area.

Morton's Neuroma is yet another type of foot problem. With Morton's Neuroma the nerve that is between the 3rd and 4th toes becomes constricted and pinched. Morton's Neuroma is a build up of extra tissue in the nerve. This extra buildup of nerve tissue can be very painful.

Corns and calluses are other foot problems that are caused by pressure being exerted on the skin of your foot. They occur when bones of the foot are pressed against the shoe's surface or even when two of your foot bones are pressed together. Usually you will get corns and calluses on your big toe and also the little toe. Calluses can form underneath the ends of the foot bones. Soft corns can occur between the toes.

Hammertoes are another type of foot problem. Hammertoes are a permanent sideways bend in the joint of your middle toe. Hammertoes can be made worse by wearing tight shoes and you will usually feel pain on the top of the toe and at the end of the toe.

Plantar warts are the last of the foot problems. These warts occur on the soles of the foot. They are an infection by certain viruses. Plantar warts grow inward. The wart can't grow outward. The reason is because of the weight that's placed on it when you stand. You may experience severe pain when you are walking.

While all of these foot problems are treatable it's best to know more about them so that you don't repeat the mistakes that lead you to having them in the first place. While the pain in the foot problems can be severe it's not life threatening which can make you feel somewhat better! <bio> http://www.herbalremedieslk.com/home_remedies.html , http://www.herbalremedieslk.com/home_remedies.html , http://www.myanxietyguide.com </bio>

Sometimes a bone spur isn't the only bony bump your foot can grow. A bunion is another type of bony growth that can form on the joint located at the base of the big toe. Bunions can develop for various reasons, but the most common cause is related to wearing shoes that are too small or too tight to the feet. Bunions can also result from injury or stress of the foot, or from some other medical condition.

A bunion occurs when the big toe joint enlarges and forces the toe to push against the rest of the toes. The enlargement puts pressure on the big toe joint and pushes it outward beyond the limits of your foots natural shape. In addition to the big toe joint, bunions may also form on the joint of your baby toe which are known as "bunionettes". Despite the area where a bunion may occur, bunions are quite painful.

If you think you may have a bunion, here are common signs and symptoms you can watch for:

• A bulging bump on the inside joint at the base of the big toe • Thick skin at the base of the big toe • Calluses or corns that resulted from the first and second toe overlapping • Frequent or irregular pain • Restricted motion of the big toe

Pain that results from a bunion may be mild or severe, and it is often difficult for affected individuals to walk in regular shoes. This is because the area that surrounds the bunion is also often inflamed and swollen.

If left untreated, a bunion can also affect the other toes and cause the smaller ones to become claw-like, and calluses may form on the bottom of the foot.

Without proper treatment, bunions can interfere with normal activities, can become larger, and require surgical treatment.

The method in which bunions are treated depend on the severity of the condition, and how early it is diagnosed. Therefore, as soon as you see signs or symptoms, visit your doctor so you can be treated and cut your risk of developing joint deformities.

The following are common treatments: • Comfortable shoes -- wear shoes that are not only made to fit your feet, but also provide your toes with plenty of space to move about. • Pad and tape your foot -- To help minimize pain you can pad a bunion. Your doctor can recommend pads and even help you tape and pad your foot in a natural position to help decrease the stress on the bunion and alleviate pain. • Medication -- Your doctor may recommend painkillers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen to reduce inflammation. • Physical therapy -- whirlpool baths, ultrasound therapy and other forms of physical therapy can help relieve inflammation and pain of a bunion. • Orthotics -- A padded shoe insert known as an orthotic can help your foot achieve normal movement and can reduce the symptoms caused by a bunion. Orthotics can also prevent a bunion from becoming larger.

Surgery is usually the last treatment option recommended for bunion sufferers. Although there are different types of surgeries, the most common is a bunionectomy. This involves the removing of swollen tissue around the joint of the big toe; straightening the big toe by removing a portion of the bone; and permanently connecting the bones of the affected joint.

If you have a bunion, your best option is to talk to your doctor about effective treatments, and avoid further aggravating your bunion by giving your toes the freedom to move. <bio>By Dave Wilson. For any of you gals that like to squeeze into pointed toed shoes and high heels; you know why.

Although the numbers related to foot pain are high... there is good news... most causes of foot pain are both treatable and preventable.

Let's take a look at a few of the more common foot ailments and how to deal with them.

First... the two "C's" ... corns and calluses.

These guys are layers of compacted dead skin cells and aren't very pretty. If you leave corns and calluses on your feet unattended they can become quite painful... even to the point that they will limit your mobility and activity.

Foot calluses and corns are caused by friction and the rubbing of your skin against your shoe. Calluses usually form on the bottom of the foot and are very common in athletics, while corns normally form on the top of the toe. Using a pumice stone and a warm soak to gently eradicate the dead skin is an effective treatment.

Bunions are a condition in which the joint at the base of the big toe becomes enlarged. Many times bunions are caused by flat feet, and faulty foot structure. As such you may see bunions more prevalent in one family tree as opposed to another. With the natural structure of the foot many times being the root cause, providing but temporary relief from the pain via padding, supports, shoe inserts and or medications are the only options short of surgery.

If you've ever had one, you'll know why ingrown toenails make the list. Ingrown toenails occur when the toenail penetrates the skin. More often than not this is a result of improper nail care and trimming. Proper trimming means that the nail is cut straight across and not tapered around the edges.

Heel and arch pain is generally known as plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is essentially the tissue along the bottom of your foot that connects the heel to the toes. When this tissue becomes stressed or even torn, inflammation and pain (even severe) will occur. The pain will be the most intense early in the morning with your first few steps. This is because overnight the plantar fascia tissue has contracted a bit and is not warmed up. Self care to relieve this pain includes contrasting baths on the painful area, stretching, and exercising. As with all pain, if becomes chronic and is not responding to home treatment, consult with your doctor.

By in large, most of these foot ailments can be prevented by wearing properly fitted shoes. Give your feet the room that they need, avoid prolonged use of high heels and pointy toes. Practice good nail care and hygiene and chances are you'll keep your feet happy and pain free. <bio>For more important information on foot pain be sure to visit http://sore-foot-remedies.com where you will find advice and tips on common foot pain causes such as plantar fasciitis, hammertoe, and other articles that you can view at http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com </bio>

There are a number of foot problems that can affect us. While there are some good medications to get rid of some of these foot ailments there are times when these pains can not be cured by various topical lotions. For these the only remedy is that of foot surgery.

Foot surgery is done by a trained podiatrist surgeon. In many of the cases the foot problems are not that severe. Bunions for instance can be treated with inserts to control incorrect foot mechanics. However for severe bunions day surgery is recommended. Here the long metatarsal bone is cut and then realigned so that it is straight. When the bone has been fixed it is held in place with a screw. The healing process will be fully completed in about several months.

For hammer toes if the symptoms are of a mild nature then all that needs to be done is the shoe type has to be changed. This will cause the hammer toes to be less painful. A splint can be used to hold the toes together. Surgery may be required if the symptoms of hammertoes is too severe. The surgery can correct the problem by releasing the soft tissues of the foot and by removing a bone piece from the toe.

Heel pain is a condition that causes an inflammation in the muscle that connects the heel to the rest of the foot. You can control this problem by using orthotics to support the arch of the foot. Foot surgery is used only if it is absolutely needed. In this surgery the fascia muscle is partially removed from the heel bone.

Morton's Neuroma is caused by the swelling of one of the nerves in the foot. This swelling takes place between the 3rd and the 4th toe bones. Neuroma can cause the sharp pain that spreads between the 2 infected toes. There will generally be burning pains, tingling, cramping and sometimes numbness while you are walking.

Morton's Neuroma can be treated by changing your shoes to a wider shape. This will reduce the symptoms of Neuroma. You can wear orthotics to prevent the nerves from becoming irritated. In more severe cases cortisone injections will be able to relieve the pain and the swelling that is caused by the Neuroma. Surgery will only be needed to remove or to decompress the Neuroma.

As with all of these foot problems foot surgery is required only if the condition becomes too severe to be borne. When the surgery needs to be done it may require only day surgery and nothing more complicated. Before having foot surgery done it is best to try other methods of curing the pain of the various foot ailments. It is always best to avoid any type of surgery where possible. <bio> http://www.easyhomeremedy.com/free_download.html , http://www.healtharticles-lk.com , http://www.easyhomeremedy.com/garden/family_garden_tips_index.html </bio>

What causes foot pain?

There are many factors that contribute to foot pain

• Wearing shoes that do not fit properly -- causing calluses and bunions • Obesity or being overweight increases chances of foot problems or injuries.

A great tip when buying shoes -- buy them in the afternoon when feet are at their largest due to swelling. If you wear heels, no more than one inch is best.

Calluses are thickened layers of skin caused by repeated pressure or friction. These are usually seen on the top or side of a toe when shoes do not fit properly. A bunion is a condition where the big toe points toward the second toe. This causes a bump on the edge of the foot that may also appear on the joint of the big toe.

High-heeled, narrow shoes that push the big toe towards the second toe can cause bunions. The condition is seen mostly in women, and sometimes runs in families. Bunions can become painful when extra bone and accompanying fluid-filled sac start to develop at the base of the big toe.

Relieving foot pain

Water massage

There feet relieving pain procedures can be used for all kinds of foot pain. Baths of hot and cold water can be very helpful for reducing swelling and pain.

Here's what you do:

1. Soak your foot for 5 minutes in cold water 2. Move the foot to a container of hot water of a tolerable temperature. The temperature of the water should not be cool or even lukewarm. 3. Soak the foot in the hot water for 5 minutes 4. Return to the cold water This simple process invigorates the feet and opens and closes blood vessels. When you're finished, use a moisturizing lotion to help massage the feet.

Ointments

There are some ointments, especially those made from capsaicin (interestingly, an active ingredient in hot peppers) that are excellent in relieving foot pain. The capsaicin helps in relieving the blaze caused by burning feet especially for diabetic individuals. Applying the ointment may cause burning sensations in some people but should not be a cause of alarm as this effect lessens over time.

Especially for diabetics, the effects of capsaicin ointment are remarkable. Many diabetics report greater improvement and were waling more easily compared to those using other brands of creams. Another advantage comes from the fact that since these ointments are applied onto the skin, there is less risk of side effects.

Break in new shoes carefully

New shoes often create some foot problems, especially if you use them for running or strenuous walking or hiking. Individuals with new shoes shouldn't over exert or they may end up experiencing excruciating break-in pains. Of course modern footwear has come a long way in terms of shoe development technology.

Stretching

Stretching out the calf can help reduce or relieve foot pain. Try this:

1. Standing three feet away from a wall, place your hand on the wall. 2. Lean toward the wall, bringing one leg forward and bending at the elbows. 3. Keep your back leg straight with the heel on the floor and then gently stretch the calf muscle. 4. Repeat for the other foot Stretches like this can help in relieving some of the tension in the feet.

Choose the appropriate shoe size and shapes

Choosing the right shoe size and shape is important when it comes to foot problems. You need to buy shoes that match the arch of your foot so you don't put too much tension on your foot. Another tip? Shop for shoes in the afternoon, as feet tend to be larger at this time of day.

Before you try any of the remedies discussed here, consult your own doctor for the treatments that will be best for your unique situation. <bio>By Dave Wilson.
Foot corns develop as a result of increased pressure on a particular area of skin causing it to become thickened and hard. Corns often appear on the tops of the toes, the sole of the feet or even in between the toes. Because of the constant increased and localized pressure on a specific area of the foot generally from poorly fitting shoes, the skin begins to react in a protective fashion and forms a corn. These corns can be either hard or soft in nature.

Corns on the tops of the toes are generally hard whereas the ones found in between the toes are more often soft in nature. A very common location of corns is on the outside of the little toe, most often seen in women, particularly those wearing fashionable yet ill-fitting shoes which because of the tight and narrow toe box cause an increased friction and pressure on the outside of the toe. Other common forefoot problems can also occur such as the development of bunions or hammertoes.

Corns generally appear as a round, hard areas and generally occur on the areas of the feet which bear the most pressure. Foot corns are caused by a variety of issues such as ill-fitting shoes, hammertoes, other conditions causing an abnormal gait, or even bunions. It is important for your physician to assess your feet to accurately diagnose the exact type of foot malady present. Plantar's warts, calluses or foot corns may appear the same yet they each require specific treatment and so it is important to have an accurate diagnosis prior to treatment.

Foot corns may be treated in a variety of ways, including those that you can implement at home and those that require a physician's intervention. Gel toe tubes and soft toe rings provide cushioning for corns giving temporary relief. Using a pumice stone to gently buff away at the thickness of the foot corn can also provide temporary relief.

Stretching your shoes or replacing them with properly fitting shoes can be the best solution to preventing the development of future corns. Addressing other health issues that may cause an abnormal gait leading to excessive pressure on your feet can also be of help. Your physician can provide foot corn treatment in the office by using a scalpel to shave off the top of the corn to reduce the toughened and hard skin. Your physician may also suggest the use of a salicylic acid on the corn itself to soften the skin and reduce its size.

Foot corns are bothersome and painful. Prevention is the key and best solution. However there are numerous options available for foot corn treatment involving both easy to implement ideas that you can use at home to treatments requiring your physician's assistance. <bio>For more important information on foot pain be sure to visit http://sore-foot-remedies.com where you will find advice and tips on common foot pain causes such as plantar fasciitis, hammertoe, and other articles that you can view at http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com </bio>

Supermodel Naomi Campbell and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham may be celebrities, but they suffer from the same condition that affects two-thirds of all women: foot discomfort. Painful bunions reportedly afflicted both of these high-profile women, but bunions are just one of the many everyday foot ailments suffered by an increasing number of women.

This celebrity duo spent years as fashion slaves in extreme styles of pointed-toe and high-heeled shoes, and those years have taken their toll. But even though most women don't have to be concerned with paparazzi and fashion photographers, headlines about the celebrity duo's plight has brought media awareness to the importance of comfort in women's shoes.

Women's shoes that don't fit correctly or whose design causes pressure in spots nature never intended can trigger swelling and pain, and can also lead to long-term foot problems. Corns, calluses, bunions, blisters, heel and arch pain-all can be the result of a shoe that doesn't fit properly or hasn't been designed with female anatomy in mind. These problems may eventually lead to gait or posture problems, all the result of improper shoes. It's even been suggested that they can cause wrinkles, a result of so much painful grimacing over the years.

Notice we've been talking strictly about women, as they're much more likely to wear poor fitting shoes than men. Men have their own problems to deal with, as evidenced by the headlines about David Beckham, Victoria's soccer-playing husband, when the metatarsal bone went from obscurity to everyday language after he hurt his foot during last year's World Cup.

Foot problems in women is even more prevalent in England than in the colonies. Research shows that British women spend more time on their feet each day, especially at work. And don't think the rest of Europe isn't aware of these problems-workers are rarely required to stand more than two hours a day in Sweden for this reason.

The number of workdays lost by female workers due to foot, toe, and ankle-related problems is increasing everywhere. According to trade union leaders, over 2 million workdays are lost to lower limb disorders each year. Nearly 200,000 workers in almost any industry you can imagine blame their jobs for causing or worsening these ailments. Complaints have come from nurses, teachers, receptionists, bartenders, waitresses, hairdressers, lab techs, postal workers, and many other fields.

A good example of why comfort is rapidly becoming the main consideration when buying shoes is the airline industry. A cabin crew typically works 12 hours a day, four or five days a week, and spends most of that time on their feet. The result is the same as walking six miles each day, while at 30,000 feet it's not very easy to do anything about an ill-fitting shoe.

It's been more than a century since doctors first warned of the risks of prolonged standing in unsuitable shoes, and getting a shoe that mixes comfort and style with affordability is even more important today. The old adage that "healthy shoes mean healthy feet" is as true today as it ever was.

Shoes that fit properly and provide proper support are vital to prevent sore feet and many other common foot problems, but another important aspect of proper footwear is providing traction. Your risk of slipping and falling will be minimized by the proper choice of shoes.

One way to lessen foot discomfort caused by shoes is to consider switching to a different pair from day to day. This will aid in varying posture and help to distribute your weight over a wider variety of muscles and joints. Another benefit of alternating shoes is that it allows them to dry thoroughly, thereby reducing bacterial growth. This is especially important with sports footwear and will allow your shoes to last longer, saving money in the long run. <bio>To save on shoes and other "feel good" accessories, Vince suggests using a http://www.couponkathy.com/coupons/shoes/shoebuy-coupon.htm Shoebuy Coupon and a http://www.couponkathy.com/coupons/specialty/sharper-image-coupons.htm Sharper Image Coupon from CouponKathy.com. </bio>

Could you not live without them?

Ok, would you like to spend one quarter of your life in your glamorous heels and one half of it in agony with really ugly feet? That's what you could potentially cause to happen if you rely on your high heels on a daily basis during your most active, on-your-feet years.

High heels displace the weight of your body onto the ball of your foot. Over time, feet can develop calluses, unsightly bunions and corns. With those kinds of feet, you'd better hope that Manolo Blahnik starts designing slippers!

High heels also direct the centre mass of your body forward and your spine has to bend backwards to compensate. "Oh my aching back" will be your daily mantra.

Calf muscles shorten and tighten when you wear high heels and if you wear them constantly for a long time, say more than six months, your calf muscles can remain permanently shortened. Your body will naturally try to compensate by lowering the arches of your feet or your knees, hips or back will be painfully affected.

How to enjoy your high heels but not do long-term damage

1. Wear shoes with heels no higher than 4cm for day-to-day wear.

2. Save your sexy high heels for special occasions.

3. Avoid wearing backless shoes too frequently as they make you claw your toes when you walk.

4. Stretch your calf muscles at regular intervals.

5. Alternate your shoes over a long day of standing. Keep a second pair at work so that you can switch heights during the day and give your calf muscles a chance to adapt.

6. Never walk long distances or over uneven ground such as pavements when wearing high heels.

7. High heels that feature a strap or lace across the instep are more beneficial than slip-ons as they help to stop your foot from sliding forwards.

8. See your podiatrist or chiropodist once a year for checkups on your foot health. <bio>Take care of your health! BCBSNC Blue Cross Blue Shield North Carolina: http://www.ibdinsurance.com/ Blue Advantage North Carolina: http://www.ibdinsurance.com/insurance_ind.php </bio>

Remember that famous saying, "all things aren't created equal?" Although you may not know it, the person uttering those famous words was talking about BCBG shoes. Typically, words like superior, best, and ultimate are batted about and they tend to lose their meaning, unless of course you are talking about BCBG shoes. So why are these shoes so superior? Is it because of their name or their fabulous designers? You may just be surprised by the answers to these questions.

For starters, BCBG shoes are crafted from quality materials. If you are tired of buying shoes that have the look but just don't hold up to daily wear and tear, then turn you attention to BCBG. With quality materials and craftsmanship, these shoes will last a lifetime, or until they fall out of fashion (which generally if a lifetime). Gone are split soles, splintering heels, and unraveling threads often associated with other types of shoes, so this brand is definitely the best choice for someone interested in quality in addition to appearance.

Next, BCBG shoes are designed by some of the hottest designers in existence. In addition to their show stopping and head turning line of clothing, BCBG shoes have a life of their own. Forget accessories and instead think of BCBG shoes as the main course, with your outfit simply serving as a complement to your feet. Shoe designers are popping up all over the place and footwear has never been more popular. Instead of using warmed over design ideas that are unoriginal and uninspiring, the design team at BCBG continues to challenge themselves to create new and unusual twists on old favorites and new trends.

Finally, BCBG shoes offer your feet asylum from their ill fitting competitors. Far to often, women sacrifice their feet for fashion, only providing themselves with problems at the end of the day as their feet develop problems like bunions, corns, and other unappealing but painful problems. Although BCBG shoes are stylish, they continue to be comfortable enough so that you can tackle everyday life without having to walk on eggshells. >From their sandals to their heels to their boots, BCBG shoes will keep your feet sound and secure without foot or heel pain. This comfort generally comes from the quality materials, including soft, supple leather that molds to your feet in addition to high quality soles absorb the shock associated with each step.

Regardless your reason for choosing BCBG shoes, it is hard to call the brand anything but superior. Surprisingly, BCBG footwear is not nearly as expensive as its competitors, so that you can enjoy the look, comfort, and style for less, allowing you to expand your budget to its maximum capacity. <bio>Donna Somerkin specializes in shoes http://www.bcbg-shoes-i.com and http://www.i-bcbg-shoes.com </bio>

Imagine walking 5 miles in 3 inch Stilettos? If you have every walked long distance in high heels or uncomfortable shoes, this can have damaging affects on the foot of the wearer as well as on their muscles. Many people fail to realize that when you where uncomfortable shoes and you walk long distances this can affect the knees if not right away, it will eventually catch up to the person. A young person, who can walk miles at a time in heels or uncomfortable shoes, will suffer some pain when they are finished their fashion hike. They may not realize that this could also affect their foot health in years to come. Corns and bunions are just the beginning of their pain.

For the woman who craves high heels can experience several injuries to the foot including hammer toes and stress fractures not to mention sore feet. Squared toe fashion can is better to wear because of the natural curve of the toes. Low heeled shoes with thickness will cause less damage to the foot. The only draw back is these types of shoes may be recommended for the foot but is damaging to the knees. Thicker shoe soles have a shock absorbent and put less pressure on one's foot. The upper fabric of a persons shoe should made from leather or a microfiber. This allows the foot more room to move its toes around, and will not constrict the foot if swelling occurs.

Being that heels are necessary, they should not be worn daily. Flat or low heal shoes can be very fashionable if worn with the right garments. Many women who take public transportation into work wear sneakers and when they get into the office where they do less walking, they put on their high heels as a fashion statement. When it's time for them to return home, they place their sneakers back on for total comfort.

After wearing heels, a woman should definitely soak their feet at night, even if their feet are not swollen or hurting. Soaking the feet in warm (not hot) water with shower gel or bath oils will help relieve tension in the feet. Another activity that is very helpful and should be done is mild foot massages. Last but certainly not least is getting a pedicure professionally. A professional pedicure will not only help relieve tension in the feet but it relaxes the entire body. <bio>Dana Bradley writes about http://www.onlineshoesdepot.com/Coupons/Teva.com.html,http://www.onlineshoesdepot.com/Coupons/Famous%20Footwear.html and http://www.onlineshoesdepot.com. </bio>

Most women are aware that high heels, though cute, are terrible for the health and comfort for our feet. Though the shoes accentuate the female leg and foot and help clothing to look its best, many young women are damaging their feet and many older women are already feeling the affects of damage done. The fact is that feet aren't made to be put in that position for extended periods of time; regardless of how fantastic they look.

Most doctors would argue that the curves in the leg achieved by the use of high heels with a two inch heel or higher are not normal or healthy anatomically and are actually a sign that the wearer is doing something damaging to her body. The fact that high heels are orthopedic ally unsound may not stop women from wearing heels, in fact, nothing may. But the dangers of heel wearing should be known.

Heels can create severe back and knee problems, injuries and shortened calf muscles. Most women think the only damage they are doing is felt at the end of the day, when they take their shoes off and relax the soreness in their feet. But doctors warn that heels are more than just making your feet sore, they are damaging your body.

Most women wear heels because they have to look polished for work or they think it is the style and therefore somehow required of them as women. Most women also feel that the foot pain they experience is most commonly callus and heel pain. Women also complain about bunions, joint swelling, hammertoes, permanent bends in toes, neuromas, nerve issues, ingrown toenails, shooting pains and stress fractures. Some women, who wear heels their whole lives eventually, will be unable to wear flat shoes.

Their Achilles tendon actually shortens due to being condensed by the curve of the heel. The problem can be fixed but that doesn't lessen the severity of the condition. Dancers have the worst problems as their jobs require them to move constantly in severely uncomfortable shoes that contort the feet into unnatural shapes. One condition is actually named after the shoes. A "pump bump" is the bump that forms on the back of the heel from the heel rubbing against the inside of the shoe. The heel wearer can also put undo pressure on her toenails and promote thicker growth of toenails as well as fungus and in-grown nails. <bio>Dana Bradley writes about http://www.onlineshoesdepot.com/Coupons/StacyAdams.com.html,http://www.onlineshoesdepot.com/Coupons/6pm.com.html and http://www.onlineshoesdepot.com </bio>

Our feet are an important part of our bodies. Even though they are smaller than the rest of the body baring the hands, our feet take our entire weight. The foot region is made up of 26 bones and 33 joints. There is a layer of 126 intertwining foot muscles, ligaments and nerves. Our feet helps to support our weight, act as a shock absorber, propel us forward and the also maintain our balance on uneven surfaces. There are however times when we get a foot pain.

Usually we will experience foot pain in one of three different places. They are the toes, the front of the foot and at the back of the foot. The foot pain that originates in the toes is caused mainly by the fact that a great many of us wear shoes that do not fit us properly or that constricts the toes painfully.

The other area of foot pain is in the front part of our feet. This area is called the forefoot. Any foot pain that comes from that area usually involves one of certain bone groups. The first groups of bones is the themetatarsal bones. These are the five long bones that extend from the front part of our foot's arch to the bones in our toes.

The next group of bones that can cause foot pain is that of the sesamoid bones. These are the two small bones that are embedded at the top of the first metatarsal bone. This bone is connected to your big toe.

The other place that we can experience foot pain is in the back area of our feet. Any foot pain that we may feel begins at the back of the foot. It then extends across from the heel area and across the sole of the foot all the way to the ball of the foot.

From these three areas of foot pain we can experience chronic and severe types of foot pain. In both of the foot pain conditions the problem is made even worse by the fact that the lower back is affected as well.

There are about 16 different types of foot pain that we can get. Each of these has different symptoms but they all require a podiatrist's advice. Sometimes to relieve the pain simple surgery may be required.

The various types of foot pain are corns, calluses, ingrown toe nails, bunions on the big toe and bunionettes on the little toe, Morton's neuroma, hammertoe, Metatarsalgia or ball of the foot pain, Metatarsal stress fracture, sesamoiditis, Plantar fasciitis, Bursitis of the heel, Haglund's deformity or pump bump, Stress fracture or heel spurs, Tarsal tunnel syndrome, Flat feet or posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, High arches or hollow feet and Achilles tendonitis.

Whether we are suffering from a simple foot pain or a more severe foot pain the most sensible course of action that we can take is to see what our podiatrist has to say and follow the treatment. <bio> http://www.herbalremedieslk.com/home_remedies.html , http://www.herbalremedieslk.com/home_remedies.html , http://www.myanxietyguide.com </bio>

Flat feet is a common condition of the foot that occurs in the walking process when an individual's arch collapses upon weight bearing.

This motion can cause extreme stress or inflammation on the plantar fascia, potentially causing discomfort and can lead to other foot problems, such as plantar fascitis. Flat feet can be in either one foot or both feet. Individuals that have a low arch or no arch at all are referred to as flat feet or fallen arch.

Flat feet can be hereditary or caused by a fore foot varus, which is a condition in which the joint in the foot pronates (which means the foot rolls to much). Over-pronation is very common in individuals who have flexible, flat feet.

A ruptured tendon can also cause flat feet. Flat feet can also be caused by obesity, pregnancy or repetitive pounding on a hard surface causing the arch to weaken. Other causes of flat feet can be diabetes, high blood pressure, certain kinds of arthritis and even over-use.

Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the condition. The arch area can be very tender and you will notice that your shoes tend to wear out quickly causing you to need to replace shoes more often than normal. If you take a close look at your shoes you will often notice that inside soles of the shoes have worn much more than the outsides of the shoes. Particularly the inside area around the heels of the shoes will generally show the most excessive wear.

Flat feet can also lead to corns or hardened skin under the sole of the foot as a result of the excessive wear on the feet.

Over-pronation can lead to plantar fascitis, neuromas, heels spurs or bunions.

Treatment for flat feet should begin by wearing wider fitting shoes and purchasing quality insoles or orthotics to take the pain from the arch.

Your podiatrist will normally prescribe flat feet insoles that will cup the heel and support the arch helping to relieve the symptoms of flat feet. The correct footwear with a firm heel counter is recommended most often and will give the extra support and stability.

Flat feet is often times preventable if the feet are taken care of properly.

Almost 25% of Americans suffer with flat feet but there is hope for those who suffer. Flat feet can be painful condition and the correct footwear, weight loss and orthotics will bring positive results. <bio>For more important information on foot pain be sure to visit http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com where you will find advice and tips on common foot pain causes such as plantar fasciitis, foot corns, and other articles that you can view at http://www.sore-foot-remedies.com </bio>

Bunion is one of the most common problems faced by many people. It is more common than you can imagine. The medical term for this condition is known as Hallux Valgus. The problem arises when a bump starts developing on the inside of your big toe. This comes along with severe pain and swelling. The swelling is caused due to a bone which protrudes towards the inside of your foot. The big toe joint gets bigger which pressurizes other toes. These pressured toes cause severe pain mainly while walking. It can also occur to the joint of your little toe which is known as bunionette.

One of the common reasons to suffer from this condition is by wearing tight shoes. Cramping your feet in a small pair of shoes can cause such problems. Bunion also arises due to certain foot injury as well as stress. Women are affected by this condition mainly due to high-heeled, pointy-toed shoes which cramp the air causing problems to your feet. Bunions are also formed to a flatfeet person. It runs in the family as it is a hereditary problem. Older people and many young people suffer from arthritis problem which is also a good reason for development of bunion.

Some of the most common symptom for bunion is severe pain. The area becomes red and tender causing inflammation. There is also a burning sensation and sometimes numbness. You can develop other problems like in-growth of toe nail and well as sores between the toes. If these symptoms do not satisfy your doubts, you can check it with your local doctor by taking an x-ray. Bunion can be rectified only through surgery, but you can use some home remedies to prevent such problem and also get some relief.

Home Remedies

First thing first, you have to buy a good pair of shoes. Other than looks it should be useful for your feet. Always wear shoes which have wider toe space. It should be comfortable and should also provide the maximum protection.

You can use padding over the bunion area which would minimize the pain.

Apply ice pack several times a day to reduce inflammation.

You can also buy bunion shields, bunion bandages and bunion night splints which are a small way to provide some relief to your feet.

Try easing the pain by massaging your foot in a perpendicular motion.

Compression of heating pads on regular intervals provides great help to your feet.

Soaking your feet in hot water is by far one of the best remedies for bunion.

Warning: The reader of this article should exercise all precautionary measures while following instructions on the home remedies from this article.
Most women think that because they get regular pedicures their feet and toenails are clean and safe from infections. What they don't realize is that women are more susceptible to toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders. Think of the variety of shoes most women squeeze their feet into for the sake of looking fashionable. Most of women's footwear sacrifice comfort and ultimately, the health of their toes.

According to David Wong, a dermatologist from Sydney, the most common toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders are onychomycosis, Athletes Foot, bunions, and tinea. These are often infectious, ugly, and uncomfortable conditions which may affect the ability to do daily activities. He also stressed that nail infections are not cosmetic problems. It is not also a matter of cleanliness. You are at risk of fungal infections even if you're toes and feet are squeaky clean. Regular pedicures are not the answer since feet specialists at most salons are only trained and equipped to beautify feet and toes, not to cure these infections. What's more, most think that toenail discolorations are just that, discolorations. They think that these can be covered up by the latest nail polish trend. What they don't know is that these discolorations can be symptoms of toe infection. He names stubbing toes, too-short nails, and wearing tight foot wear as most common causes of infections because these weaken nails and opens nail beds for contamination of bacteria.

Aside from discolorations, other symptoms of toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders are nail crumbling, thick nails, and brittle nails. Extreme cases might even cause nails to separate from their beds. The skin around the infected nail might also collect pus. Foul foot odor is an almost sure sign of fungal feet infections. If you are thinking to avoid damp places to avoid getting infected, Dr. Wong states that damp places are not the only place where you might be infected. Places where skin can get contact like carpets, mats, linens, and other towels are also possible places to incur infections. Public places like public pools, showers, hotels, motels, changing/locker rooms, and laundry service rooms are high infection risk areas. Sharing foot wear is also a culprit in getting infections. He emphasized to avoid borrowing or lending of footwear like socks and shoes to reduce risks of infections.

Dr. Wong advocates immediate medical action if you suspect being infected by toe fungus, toe fungi, toe disease, toe nail infections, and toe nail disorders because it is uncommon for these infections to heal on their own. Early medication and treatment could prevent fungi to grow, hence, stopping the progress of the infection. At the first symptom of nail disease, consult your doctor to avoid unpretty feet. <bio>For more valuable information on toe fungus, please visit http://www.fungustoe.com </bio>
