What is it?

Impetigo is a skin infection caused by the bacteria staphylococcus aureus. This infection is more common in children, though it can also affect adults. Impetigo commonly affects the area around the nose and mouth. It usually starts as a red area, which can be painful and itchy. After a day or so the infected area can become crusty with a characteristic golden color. If not treated for many days or weeks, the infection becomes more widespread. Occasionally blisters can form in areas affected by impetigo when it is called bullous impetigo.

Precautions

Impetigo is highly infectious so take appropriate precautions when handling the patient. Wash your hands after handling lesion or bandages. Dispose of used dressings to prevent re-infection. Wash towels, sheets and clothing in antibacterial detergent. Keep children out of school until successfully treated.

Treatment

Do consult your dermatologist if you suspect that you or someone in your family is suffering from impetigo. You will most probably be prescribed a dose of antibiotics to help cure the symptoms of this disease. In addition, you may also want to try a course of aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has proved to be very effective in the treatment of impetigo and it is completely compatible with allopathic methods of treatment that your dermatologist may recommend.

Some of the aromatherapy essential oils that are used in the treatment of impetigo are tea tree and lavender.

Tea Tree. Tea Tree oil is distilled from the leaves and branches of the Tea Tree, a small tree belonging to the myrtle family, and a native of the marshland of New South Wales. Its wide range of medicinal uses has been verified by research. Tea tree is not only a very strong antiseptic but non-toxic and non-irritant as well. It dissolves pus, leaving infected wounds clean. Essential oil of the Tea Tree can be applied locally to the infected area in the form of creams or soap. The smell of tea tree is also very refreshing and revitalizing.

Lavender

Lavender oils are distilled from the blue flowering spikes of the lavender bush, just before opening. Lavender has long been known as an antiseptic and for its skin healing properties. It also boosts the immune system. Essential oils of lavender can be applied as a face oil or lotion or as a soap. The smell of lavender has a very relaxing effect.

In addition to aromatherapy treatment for impetigo there are a few more things that you can do to speed up the cure.

- Eat a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables. - Take Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin A supplements daily. - Try a herbal blood purifying tablet or syrup. - Do remember to carry out all of the above treatments in consultation with your dermatologist. <bio>M.
Impetigo is an extremely contagious skin infection. This is essentially a disease of childhood, though it may also occur frequently in adults. It is usually prevalent in infants and younger children following a cold. The infection can spread rapidly from one child to another by close contact, especially during the early years in schools. The disease is more common in the areas with unhygenic conditions.

Early and adequate treatment of the first small patch of impetigo can prevent the spread of the disease. The childpatient should be kept isolated until the condition is cleared up, so as to prevent the spread of infection. He should be prevented from scratching the scabs. He should have his own sponge and towel. No other member of the familiy should use these articles. They should be changed frequently and washed seperately. The use of harsh detergent should be avoided . Clothes should be thoroughly rinsed.

The treatment of impetigo is essentially constitutional and it should consist of proper diet, correct hygeine and fresh air. The best way to commence the treatment is to place the patient on an all-fruit diet for two or three days. In this regimen, he should be given fresh juicy fruits such as orange, apple, pineapple, grapes, pear, peach and papaya. In case of older children, however, it would be advisable to commence the treatment by placing him on a diet of orange juice and water for about three days. This may be followed by an all-fruit diet for further three days.

After the all-fruit diet, the patient may embark upon a well balanced diet consisting of milk, seeds, nuts and grains, vegetables and fruits. The emphasis should be on fresh fruits, raw salads, fresh milk and whole meal bread. The use of these foods is of utmost importance in the future dietary. The child-patient should avoid tea, coffee and all condiments and highly flavoured dishes as well as sugar, white flour products, denatured cereals and tinned or bottled foods.

It will be desirable to administer warm-water anema daily during the first few days of the treatment to cleanse the bowels. If constipation is habitual, all natural methods should be adopted for its eradication.

Certain home remedies have been found beneficial in the treatment of impetigo. The use of turnip is one such remedy. A few chopped turnip pieces after thorough cleaning should be immersed in rice starch or any natural vinegar for about six hours. They should then be eaten by the patient.

Garlic is useful in relieving constant itching caused by this disease. This vegetable should be crushed and spread over irritated areas. One or two cloves of garlic should be chewed for better results.

Other helpful measures for treating this disease are sun and air baths, a daily dry friction, sponge and breathing and other light exercises. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.healtharticles-lk.com , http://www.herbalremedieslk.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

Word searching is locating the medical word that is correct both in spelling and meaning. This is a Medical Transcription skill that takes time and practice to develop.

Tip #1:

If you find yourself unable to locate a medical word in your reference books, it might be the word has an initial letter different than the sound or initial letter you hear. For example, the v sounds very much like that of f, the letter m may actually be an x (xiphoid) and the k might be ch (ischemic).

In addition, medical terms that contain silent letters such as euthyroid, herniorrhaphy, pneumonia or words frequently mispronounced such as menstruation present a unique challenge for the Medical Transcriptionist.

Experience is often more the teacher in using available resources. The longer you remain a Medical Transcriptionist, the more proficient you will become in determining sound-alikes and locating terms with silent letters.

Tip #2:

When you are unable to locate a phrase under a particular entry, look under a related entry.

Tip #3:

When you hear a phrase you cannot understand, look first under the noun and not the adjective. Nouns usually follow adjectives. An example: If you are looking for bullous emphysema, look under emphysema (the noun) and not bullous. To find particular diseases such as Parkinson's disease, look under disease.

An exception to the above tip is that in Latin phrases, the noun is followed by the adjective such as "fascia lata," and "ligamentum flavum." You would look under the first word with Latin phrases. Bacterial names are another exception in that the genus is given first, followed by the species: Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

If you exhaust all you know to do when word searching on the job, a Medical Transcriptionist should:

1.seek another transcriptionist's opinion 2.refer to the patient's chart 3.contact the dictating physician for clarification 4.leave a blank in the report and attach a note so that the dictator may insert the correct word

If you leave a blank in the report, you should flag the report by attaching a note with a paperclip. The note should list all blanks left in the report, and giving as many details as possible for ease of identification such as page and line number. The Medical Transcriptionist may also give a phonetic spelling of what the word or words sounded like to assist the dictator in filling in the blank or blanks.

The main thing to remember about word searching is to never guess at a word. A blank in the medical report does not reflect poorly on the Medical Transcriptionist who thoroughly researched for the words and exhausted all else before leaving the blank. Leaving a blank is the correct thing to do. Integrity and accuracy of the medical report is much more important than presenting documents that never leave blanks.

This article is FREE to publish with the resource box.

=A9 2007 Connie Limon All Rights Reserved <bio>Connie Limon, Medical Transcriptionist.
MRSA stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. It is also better known and referred to as the 'superbug.' It has been around since 1961 despite popular belief. It was only in the early 90's that it spread quite dramatically and caused health problems and even death to many people in the UK. According to the UK office for National Statistics, they sadly reported 1,629 MRSA-related deaths in England and Wales during 2005.

The virus can be easily spread by merely being in contact with someone who has it, but it can also be spread through contact with towels, sheets, clothes, dressings or other objects. The MRSA virus can also survive on objects and surfaces such as door handles, sinks, floors and cleaning equipment. You can diagnose MRSA through blood and urine tests

The baceria is called Staphylococcus Aureus and apparently 1 in 3 of us carries it on the surface of our skin or in our nose. This generally causes no harm if the carrier is healthy; however if a carrier comes into contact with a vulnerable patient, i.e. someone with lowered immune system, a person with open wounds or someone who has just had surgery the they can pass the infection onto these people.

If the bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus gets into your body through a break in your skin it can cause infections such as boils, abscesses, or impetigo. If the bacteria gets inside into your bloodstream it can cause more serious infections such as the blood poisoning, septic shock, severe joint problems, bone marrow infection, internal abscesses anywhere within the body, inflammation of the tissues that surround the brain and spinal cord, lung infection or infection of the heart lining.

Trying to prevent the spread of MRSA is a tricky business. The measures to prevent the spread of organisms from one person to another are called isolation or infection control. The most important type of isolation is called contact isolation where everyone in contact of the MRSA sufferer has to wash their hands after touching the patient or anything to do with the patient. If there are a number of patients infected with MRSA then moving them to an isolation unit is the safest way to minimise the spread.

Unfortunately more and more people are going into hospital for minor illnesses or ailments only to catch MRSA and end up far sicker than previously. It is worth pursuing a compensation claim if this happens to you as you shouldn't have caught this virus and suffered in this way. You are well within your rights to make a claim for compensation even though it can be difficult to prove clinical negligence. A professional lawyer should be enlisted to help you. There is no need to worry about lawyers fees as there is the 'no win no fee' agreement that allows anyone to take on a compensation claim. The lawyer will be working for free and only in the event of the winning case will the lawyers fees be paid via the insurance of the losing party. If the case is lost there is insurance to cover fees.<bio>Carolyn Clayton is the webmaster for accidentconsult.com, experts in claiming compensation for MRSA.</bio>

This is the second part of a guide to avoiding the MRSA superbug. MRSA is an infection that is more dangerous than similar illnesses because it is resistant to normal treatment. MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (SA). SA is a type of bacteria and the fact that it is methicillin-resistant means it cannot be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin.

MRSA is no more infectious than other types of bacteria however, and one in three of us carry on our skin or in our nose. It causes skin infections such as boils, styes and impetigo, but is only really dangerous if it gets into the bloodstream when septicaemia, joint problems and heart and lung infections can result.

What causes MRSA?

When bacteria encounter an antibiotic such as methicillin in the bloodstream, an epic battle commences. Antibiotics are not as ruthless as Rambo however, and on occasion some of the bacteria survive. Bacteria are able to mutate, or change themselves, and in doing so can transform themselves so that they develop a resistance to the antibiotic. These surviving antibiotic-resistant bacteria then multiply quickly before heading off to infect someone else. In this way, some types of SA bacteria have become resistant to many antibiotics, and formed the Superbug MRSA.

Why have antibiotic resistant bacteria increased in recent years?

Part of the reason may be that people do not always finish the full course of antibiotics they have been prescribed. This allows some bacteria to survive and then develop a resistance to the antibiotic. Another problem is that antibiotics are now so widely used, and in some cases overused, that bacteria has been able to develop resistance to a wide range of antibiotics.

How does MRSA spread?

MRSA bacteria usually spreads through person-to-person contact with someone who carries an MRSA infection. It also spreads through contact with sheets, clothes, towels, dressings or other objects that have come across someone with MRSA. MRSA will also survive on objects such as door handles, sinks, floors and cleaning equipment and can be contracted through physical contact with them.

Why does MRSA usually happen in hospitals?

MRSA does not normally infect healthy people. Although people outside hospital can sometimes become infected, most cases involve patients already in hospital. This is because an entry point is required for the bacteria to get into the body. Hospital patients have many ready made entry-points such as surgical wounds, catheters, or intravenous tubes which are like adventure playgrounds for the bacteria.

Who is most at risk from MRSA?

People with a weakened immune system are most at risk from being infected. Typically this includes the elderly, newborn babies, and those with health problems such as diabetes, cancer or HIV/AIDS. Patients who have open wounds, catheters or intravenous drips, burns, cuts, severe skin conditions are also at risk, as are those who have recently had surgery, or take frequent courses of antibiotics. Although MRSA infections usually develop in people being treated in hospital, it is possible for hospital staff or visitors to become infected if they are in one of the higher risk groups. <bio>Robert Wood - http://www.accidents-direct.co.uk/Medical-Negligence/?wid=Robert_Wood Make a Medical Negligence Claim. </bio>

So, you're tired of shaving and waxing and ready to explore alternatives ways to save time. Laser hair removal cost and additional considerations are the next step. People choose to remove their hair for a variety of reasons, and sometimes, those reasons are medically based. Still, most people opt for hair removal for cosmetic reasons.

Laser hair removal cost, and some other issues, should be carefully weighed before making any decision. Laser hair removal cost can be determined by what method you choose. Laser hair removal is done through electrolysis, but there are three different methods of such, and the laser hair removal cost of each one is based on those considerations. Each method targets and damages hair follicles.

Galvanic electrolysis employs a direct current of electricity that is passed down through the needle and into the hair follicle. Thermolysis uses a high frequency that alternates current passed through the needle to the hair follicle. The blend method uses a combination of the galvanic and thermolysis methods. Laser hair removal cost is also determined by which method is used.

All laser hair removal methods consist of an invisible layer of light that is able to penetrate the surface layers of skin without damaging. Heat from the laser damages only the follicle and hair, preventing its ability to re grow. When weighing laser hair removal cost and safety, keep in mind that laser hair removal requires multiple sessions, and that repeated visits must continue. In time, hair grows back thinner, to lesser degrees. In the beginning, one may generally have another treatment within 4-6 weeks. Gradually, this time frame will increase. Laser hair removal cost is high, but for some, it's worth it.

When considering laser hair removal cost, be advised that results often depend on the skill and experience of the professional doing the procedure. While many people don't feel pain during the procedure, it all depends on a person's pain threshold. Bear in mind also that laser hair removal cost might be exacerbated by the need to treat side effects such as reddening and swelling of the area, though upon occasion, mild burning and scarring does occur. Secondary infections may occur, including impetigo or, in some cases, a reactivation of herpes simplex. Use good judgment when thinking about laser hair removal cost and other considerations.

Laser hair removal cost can range from between $400-$500 per session. Be aware that most doctors advise that their patients schedule at least four sessions for satisfactory results. The procedure can take anywhere from one to two hours, depending on the size of the area being worked on and there is no need to avoid work or play after laser hair removal. Laser hair removal cost is also determined by the professional providing the service, so it's wise to shop around. However, laser hair removal cost should not be a deciding factor when making a decision, so remember the old adage, you get what you pay for. <bio>Are laser hair removal costs holding you back from taking that final step towards a hair free body?
Laser resurfacing as a treatment for hyperpigmentation is providing successful results for many people. The laser treatment can be uncomfortable for people with a two-week recovery period after the treatment. Despite the pain of recovery, laser therapy is gaining popularity for treating hyperpigmentation.

Not all skin types are suitable for laser resurfacing for the treatment of hyperpigmentation. There are six skin types, according to the Fitzpatrick skin classification system. These skin types range from very fair skin to very dark skin.

It is not just coloring that determines a person's skin type. The different skin types are categorized according to the person's coloring and their reaction to sun exposure. The degree to which a person burns is an important consideration to determining skin type.

Of the six skin type categories, only the first four skin types are suitable for laser treatment for hyperpigmentation. The person with very fair skin who never tans and always burns has the first skin type. The second skin type is fair skin that will sometimes tan but mostly burns. The third skin type is medium in color and always tans with occasional sunburn episodes. The fourth category is olive skin, which tans and rarely burns.

The two skin types that do not have such successful results from laser treatment are the fifth and sixth skin type. The fifth skin type has brown skin, which always tans and does not burn. The sixth skin type has black skin that always tans and does not burn. Unwanted changes to skin color can occur if these two skin types receive laser treatment.

Other factors that may pre-determine the suitability of a person to be treated successfully by laser treatment include how a person heals from a wound or the presence of any pre-existing skin conditions, such as scleroderma, which is a thickened skin condition. If a person develops a ketoid formation from wounds, this person would not be a good candidate for laser treatments.

There are other diseases, which can cause problems for recovery from laser treatment. Patients with collagen vascular diseases and immunological conditions are not eligible for laser treatment since these types of conditions affect the healing process for the skin. The presence of diabetes mellitus, impetigo or herpes will negatively affect a person's eligibility for laser treatment.

Acne medication can influence the outcome of laser treatment. The use of isotretinoin, contained in the popular acne medication with the brand name Accutane, can interfere with regeneration of skin cells after laser treatment. Doctors will prefer that laser treatment candidates stop using isotretinoin from anywhere from six months to one year before receiving a laser treatment for hyperpigmentation. If a person is pregnant, the doctor will recommend waiting until the pregnancy is over before starting laser treatment.

Laser treatment for hyperpigmentation has been successful for many patients, who have the eligible skin types. There is a certain amount of risk for the first four skin types including small cysts at the treatment site, reduced skin coloring, more hyperpigmentation and scarring. Like any other medical treatment, careful consideration must be made before undergoing the treatment and all risks should be weighed carefully. If a person is prepared for the risks, including permanent scarring, then that person should find a doctor with much success and experience with laser treatment for hyperpigmentation.<bio>Hyperpigmentation is a very common problem that many people suffer from.
When you're young and healthy, you probably don't need a lot of vitamin supplements to ensure you get the complete nutrition required to keep your body healthy. But as you get older and your body changes, so will your needs. If you don't meet the required vitamin dose you need, your body will use up its store and you'll end up experiencing the symptoms of a vitamin deficiency.

Vitamin deficiency can cause a lot of trouble so why wait until it happens to you? They can range from mild to annoying and can easily turn serious if uncorrected in time. If you want to know what vitamin supplement is best for you, find out what deficiencies you want to avoid and which you want to correct.

What's your deficiency? If your body is not working as well as it did before, there's a big chance you have some form of vitamin deficiency. Here is a list of vitamins and the deficiencies they prevent or help correct:

Vitamin A Problems with the eyes and eyesight such as macular degeneration, dry and hard eyeballs, retinal detachment, conjunctivitis and color-blindness. Vitamin A is also good for treating acne, jaundice, skin infections like cold sores, impetigo and boils, warts, skin cancer and scleroderma.

Vitamin C Cataracts, dim vision, glaucoma and myopia. Vitamin C is also effective against acne, Addison's disease, stress, dry skin, bed sores, jaundice, gangrene, skin itching, prickly heat, rashes, hematoma, wrinkles and shingles.

Vitamin D Vitamin D is indicated for people who are at risk of bone diseases and degeneration such as osteoporosis. Vitamin D is usually found in sunlight and a deficiency may occur due to limited exposure. This vitamin is usually taken with Vitamin C for maximum absorption.

Vitamin E A very effective antioxidant like Vitamin A, Vitamin E is also used to treat and prevent blisters, bed sores, hot flushes, scar tissue, stretch marks, wrinkles and aging skin.

Vitamin B group This group of vitamins is sometimes referred to as Vitamin B-complex, composed of 8 B vitamins including B1, B2, B3 (niacin), B6, B12, biotin, folic acid and pantothenic acid. The vitamins in the B group, whether alone or in combination are effective against wounds, cataracts, glaucoma, retinitis, night blindness, photophobia, Addison's disease, skin ulcers, eczema, dermatitis, seborrhea, pale skin, rosacea, dandruff, graying hair and other problems with the skin and nails.

Certain vitamin groups, such as antioxidants like A, E, D and K, are important for preventing free radicals from affecting body cells. Antioxidants effectively maintain the health of cells to prevent damage.

These antioxidants are also fat-soluble vitamins. They are absorbed by the body along with fat sourced from other foods. The vitamin-rich fat is then broken down by the bile and used by the body. If you take too much, the excess vitamins are stored in your liver and kidneys.

Water-soluble vitamins like Vitamins C and B, on the other hand, are easily absorbed. If you take more than your body needs, these vitamins are simply excreted through urine.

The danger of too much of a good thing You don't have to worry about overdosing on water-soluble vitamins because your body knows how to take care of them. It is the fat-soluble type that you should be careful with. Vitamins A, E and D are toxic in high doses for long periods while too much Vitamin K can increase the risk of hemorrhage. If you must use a vitamin supplement, the best thing for you to do is to keep within the recommended daily allowance. <bio>Mario Churchill is a freelance author and has written over 200 articles on various subjects.
This is the third part of a guide to avoiding the MRSA superbug.

It causes skin infections such as boils, styes and impetigo, but is only really dangerous if it gets into the bloodstream when septicemia, joint problems and heart and lung infections can result. It spreads through physical contact, but generally only infects people with a weakened immune system. Hospital in-patients, particularly the elderly, newborn babies, and those with health problems such as diabetes, cancer or HIV/AIDS are most at risk.

How is MRSA diagnosed?

MRSA is diagnosed by testing blood, urine or tissue samples from the infected area. If MRSA bacteria are found, further tests are carried out to decide which antibiotics are most likely to treat the infection effectively. Many hospitals now test everyone who is admitted to see if they carry MRSA. Swabs from skin, the nose, and urine and blood samples will be testes and it can take three to five days for the results to come back. MRSA carriers will still be admitted, but doctors may give them additional treatment to reduce or remove the bacteria.

How is MRSA treated?

How you are treated depends on whether you are infected with the bacteria, or only a carrier of it. If you are infected you will be given the antibiotics that are still effective which are normally given either through injection or through a tube straight into a vein. Most cases require treatment in hospital and antibiotic courses may last for several weeks. If you are an MRSA carrier you may also be treated, particularly if you need to have an operation. If doctors want to remove MRSA before you enter hospital a special antibiotic cream will be applied to your skin or the inside of your nose. You may also need to wash your skin and hair with an antiseptic shampoo and lotion.

How can MRSA be prevented?

MRSA is usually contracted through human contact, often via the hands, so you should also make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before and after visiting hospital. Staff treating MRSA patients should always maintain high standards of hygiene. Before and after caring for any patient, hospital staff should ensure their hands have been thoroughly washed and dried.

Many hospitals now use antiseptic solutions such as alcohol rubs or gels, and you may find dispensers at entrances and by patient's beds for use by staff and visitors. Staff should also wear gloves when in contact with open wounds - for example when changing dressings, handling needles or inserting an intravenous drip.

What can I do to stop MRSA?

If you are prescribed antibiotics you should always make sure that you complete the full course so that all bacteria are killed off and none can survive to develop a resistance. If you are in hospital, you should also try to reduce the risk of infection by ensuring your own cleanliness. Always wash after using the toilet, and keep your hands and body clean. Take soap, a flannel and moist hand-wipes with you, as well as your own razor.

If you are concerned about hygiene, then do not be afraid to ask staff, or your visitors, if they have washed their hands. Make sure your bed area is cleaned regularly and report any unclean toilet or bathroom facilities to staff. <bio>Robert Wood - http://www.accidents-direct.co.uk/Medical-Negligence/?wid=Robert_Wood </bio>

One would think that a hospital is a place that should be virtually guaranteed to be a sterile environment. Because so many various bacteria are present in a hospital environment, it can leave patients and the staff at risk for developing a myriad of infections. No where is this more evident than in the statistics of surgical patients developing a post operative infection.

Nosocomial Infections

This is the term that is used for any infection that is a result of your treatment in a clinic or hospital that is secondary to your initial condition. You are considered to have a nosocomial infection if you develop an infection within approximately forty eight hours after your procedure or if you develop one thirty days after your discharge date. Some statistics say that at least 75% of this type of infection occurs in patients admitted to the hospital for a surgical procedure.

Where Do Surgical Infections Occur?

Though you can develop an infection in any part of your body, the commonest areas that infection are found in the urinary tract, said to be 40%, your respiratory tract, said to be 15% and bacteraemia, said to be 5%. Bacteraemia is when bacteria are able to get into your bloodstream. It is also known as septicemia.

Why Do Surgical Patients Develop Infections?

Everyone has natural occurring bacteria in and on their body. This is considered your normal body flora. You have bacteria living on your skin, in the oral and nasal cavities, the urinary tract and the large bowel. It is thought that most patients that develop a nosocomial infection do so from their own flora.

Infection from Wound Contamination

Some patients develop post operative infections because their surgical incision or the wound is contaminated. This is often referred to as a surgical site infection. This can happen in a number of ways. The wound can be contaminated by the patient's own flora or the surgeon's hands can carry infection if they are not properly washed and sterilized. The instruments or the dressings that are used during the procedure may also be the source for infectious bacteria, as well as IV lines, catheters and drains.

Airborne Post Surgical Infection Sources

You can develop an infection after surgery from bacteria that is airborne. This can come from the air flow to vents that are present in the operating room or where the procedure is performed. You can also develop an infection following surgery because of bacteria that is introduced into the environment that travels into the hospital via the staff's as well as any visitor's clothing and shoes.

Surgical Infections and Diabetes

Those with diabetes are at a higher risk than most patients for developing an infection after having surgery. Monitoring the levels of a surgical patient's blood glucose is of vital importance when that person also has diabetes. There has been much research done showing how levels of elevated blood sugar can put a patient at a higher risk of developing a post surgical infection.

What Types of Bacteria are most common in Surgical Infections?

Streptococcus pyogenes or. S.pyogenes is responsible for many diseases in humans. They can develop as a mild infection that is topical or they can cause a systematic disease that can sometimes be life threatening. Examples of S.pyogenes infections are impetigo which usually affects an area of skin and pharyngitis more commonly known as strep throat. These two conditions would be considered mild.

Staphylococcus auerus is also referred to as golden staph and can literally be translated to mean "Golden Cluster Seed." This bacterium commonly lives in a person's nose or on the skin. Staph infections can cause minor infections such as carbuncles, boils and pimples or it can cause serious infections such as meningitis, septicemia or pneumonia.

How to Avoid Developing an Infection after Surgery

Prevention is the best way you can avoid developing a post surgical infection. If you are concerned about this happening, speak to your doctor about his surgical techniques. Check with the hospital about their practices of sterilizing and preparing their operating rooms. You can also find information online that may give you an idea of the statistics for a particular health care facility for patients that develop infections after surgery in their clinical setting. <bio>Suffering from Yeast Infection?
Envision a nightmare of horror, conspiracy, medical mystery, human suffering and yet being called crazy by your doctor or others. Imagine you might have Morgellons Disease.

People who suffer from Morgellons Disease will tell you it is as if "am insect is crawling under their skin". They may have a number of symptoms but in most cases it boils down to unexplained skin rashes and eczemas and the appearance of fibers and granules coming out of their skin. Some have said that they have seen insects or some type of parasite emerging to fly away from under their skin. Often sufferers have had bouts of Lyme disease as well. Lyme disease is the most common tick borne disease in the United States whose incidence and reported incidence is rising alarmingly. Like Morgellons Disease Lyme disease was a poorly known or diagnosed disease. Suffers were often labeled by their doctors as suffering and imaginary diseases -- they were at the least hypochondriacs and perhaps psychotic. Like Morgellons disease Lyme disease affects suffers with a myriad of symptoms -- many of them similar to Morgellons including rashes, eczemas and neurological conditions. Unlike Morgellons disease Lyme disease is now recognized as a valid disease that can be identified through medical diagnostic skills and lab tests. It is now known and appreciated that early treatment of Lyme disease with antibiotics can result in an excellent treatment and prevention of many of the symptoms and complications resulting from untreated Lyme disease and that delayed or inadequate treatment may result in a condition for the poor patient which is disabling and may very difficult to treat. The same approach and understanding can not be said for Morgellons Disease sufferers.

The actual pathogen that is causing Morgellons disease is at the present unknown. It may be an old infection that has been around for eons. It may be a new type of infection that has come into play through evolution, international travel, the destruction of the Amazon and African rain forests or even outer space. It may be a new type of infection - a parasite, a worm, bacteria, a virus, a preon or something not even known yet. Nobody knows. Perhaps it is even transmitted in a latent fashion similar to mad cow disease.

The symptoms of patients presenting with Morgellons are varied and unfortunately for the suffered may match several other medical conditions most of which are widely known and that medical students and physicians are taught to quickly recognize and treat.

A well known axiom of medical training is "to always go for the most common disease "when diagnosing and treating.". Unfortunately the sufferer of Morgellons may be incorrectly diagnosed for years and years as time goes on and the disease progresses. They may be told that they have "scabies which is also a mite or small insect manifestation. They may be told that they have nothing more than standard run of the mill lice which is also an infestation of parasitic insects. They may be told that they have "Impetigo" which is a skin rash caused by bacteria The eczema may be diagnosed as simple run of the mill eczema which "happens all the time" and may be the result of simple allergies at different times of the year or as a result of changes of detergents to wash their clothes or foods that they have eaten.. They may even be told that their skin rash is a result of "bad nerves" and be given tranquillizers to quell their anxieties. Perhaps they are told that they have " Neurodermatitis " and that as a result of their allergies or nerves they have made their lesion worse by constant scratching of the sores. If they live in a hotter humid climate such as Florida they may be told that that they have a very hardy resistant fungal infection of their skin, nail or nail beds called Tinea. Their skin infection may have been explained by common terms that really are descriptive of the condition without identifying any real cause or treatment. These descriptive disease names commonly described include "Folliculitis : which is an infection of the hair follicles or roots , "Cellulitis" or skin infection or "Seborrhea : which is a condition of skin rash due to overactive sebaceous glands such as is seen in teenagers with acne.

At the worst the Morgellons disease sufferer will be blamed themselves for their condition either for compulsive skin picking , drug side effects , drug addiction or at the very end of the scale as having " Delusional parasistosis " that is tactile hallucinations of insects , snakes or other vermin crawling over their skin. Lots of luck.

Patients who claim to have the disease describe the polysymptomatic syndrome as primarily characterized by skin lesions and the appearance of fibers and granules coming out of the skin.

And yet whether real or delusional the symptoms reported by those they have Morgellons seem real enough and even horrific to those who are convinced that they are suffering . It is as if there is a sensation of bugs or worms crawling and biting under their skin . Often these people claim that they see the organisms actually crawling out and emerging from their skin along with odd fibers or filaments . What a nightmare of human suffering . <bio>Bonnie T.
