It's gained a reputation of being a game for the those without class and manners, but the truth is bowling is a an ancient sport that carries with it quite a few rules about proper behavior. These rules are taken very seriously by those who frequent the alleys, so it's a very good idea for beginners to learn a bit about the sport and its expected bowling lane etiquette.

Bowling itself dates back thousands of years into the history of man. It is believed that bowling pre-dates written history. As the years marched forward, so did the game and along with it the rules of the road. From ancient man and the courts of English kings to local alleys in cities all over the world, bowling alley etiquette has evolved into what players of today expect.

Learning how to behave on the lanes is as much an important part of the game as figuring out how to score correctly. There are some major dos and don'ts when it comes to bowling lane etiquette. They include:

Do's * Get the proper gear. It is considered a major breach of bowling lane etiquette to wear street shoes on the lanes. Make sure to have on the proper shoes. Get rentals if you don't have your own. Street shoes can damage the lanes and disrupt the oil pattern on them (not to mention the fact many are not designed to handle the slick surface).

* Observe right of way. This is perhaps the number one rule of bowling lane etiquette. The general rule of play is to allow the bowler to the right of your lane to go first if you both arrive at the same time. This helps ensure that concentration isn't interrupted by two people trying to bowl simultaneously.

* Use common courtesy. Bowling is a game that many people take very seriously. Keep common courtesy and politeness in the front of your mind.

Don'ts * Interrupt bowlers. It is considered a serious breach of bowling lane etiquette to talk to bowlers when they are trying to make a shot. Let the person who has the lane concentrate.

* Heckle. While it might be fun to pick on a friend who has bowled a bad frame, it is considered very rude to do so, especially in league play. Remember common courtesy and this bowling lane rule will make perfect sense.

* Cheat. This is a serious breach of bowling lane etiquette and something that just shouldn't be done. Keep the game clean and fun and let the pins and the score fall where they may. While it is nearly impossible to cheat with computerized scoring, some manual set ups still exist.

* Talk too loud or yell. Rowdy groups on the lanes can cause problems for everyone in the vicinity. Have fun, but try to keep the ruckus to a minimum.

Bowling is an ancient sport that has evolved through the years. From ancient man and stone objects to modern man and computerized scoring, the game might have changed a bit, but the basic rules of the road remain. The game is meant to be fun and it does carry with it a need for good sporting conduct. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling lane page. </bio>

Everyone who loves their sport knows that every time you play, you have to be in it for 100%. In bowling, we make sure that our technique is fine-tuned and that we always choose the best equipment we can. We have a ball for the first shot of the frame, a spare ball, and maybe even a hook ball. Whether we own the latest $250.00 state-of-the-art shoes or rent a reliable old pair form the bowling alley, we know that bowling shoes give us an edge as well. Unfortunately=85or fortunately, as the case may be, there is one thing at the bowling alley that you don't have complete control over; and that is the lane itself.

Lanes are like snowflakes=85

Just like snowflakes, you'll never find two lanes that are exactly alike. We spend most of our game figuring out and overcoming those differences, whether we realize it or not. But what makes the lanes different?

Where do you bowl? Older lanes, like older homes, have "character." They'll develop wear marks and divots, and if not refinished on a regular basis, will definitely cause your ball to make some unexpected moves. If the lane is damaged, it can interfere with the trajectory of your ball in a major way.

Many bowling alleys are choosing to simply cover their old, hardwood floors with a synthetic material that looks like wood instead of replacing them completely. The softer surface over worn wooden boards can impact on your ball's performance.

The brand new bowling alleys have fully synthetic surfaces on their lanes. While they look the same as wood, they are smoother and slipperier. If you're used to bowling on an old hardwood lane, it might take some practice to get used to the new surface.

Oil helps the ball go `round=85

Bowling alleys use thin coats of oil to help preserve the playing surface of the lanes. The oil is applied in one of many patterns, each pattern affecting the ball in a different manner.

Sometimes the bowling alley attendant might be a little too heavy on the oil, causing the balls to slip and slide instead of grabbing hold and rolling. Too little oil, whether by overuse of the lane between oilings or too little application of oil, can cause your ball to grab hold too early and use up all its power before it reaches the back end.

Because of the imperfections in the oil-application process, even lanes within the same bowling alley will be different. The same lane will be different in the evening than when it was freshly oiled in the morning, too.

So, my "lucky" lane is not all in my head?

Chances are, your "lucky" lane is special to you because of the way its imperfections compliment your own unique bowling style. There are many reasons why no two lanes bowl the same way. Get friendly with the workers at your bowling alley, and they will be able to tell you the best lanes to bowl. They can also tell you about how the oil is applied and the best techniques to use on that particular oil pattern. Lanes that are played on more often are likely to have less, or dried out oil and should be avoided.

Of course=85the easiest way to figure out what your bowling conditions are is to take advantage of the practice round before the scoring starts! With a little know how, you can make any lane your "lucky" lane. <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
There are really only two needed items to play the game of bowling. The first is the ball and the second is the bowling shoes. You don't need to own either of these as it is standard practice to rent them at the bowling alley. However it won't take you long to realize that most serious bowlers have their own ball and bowling shoes.

The reason for that is fairly simple when it comes to the bowling shoes. And if you have ever used rented bowling shoes, you probably can well understand why. If the bowling shoes do not fit properly then it is distracting. If you have your own pair of bowling shoes then they become an extension of your feet, they fit properly and feel good and you get used to their little quirks and the way they glide on the lane.

If you are new to bowling you may not even realize that special shoes are mandatory. They are because of the gliding motion one makes when approaching the lane and releasing the ball. Regular tennis shoes cannot give that glide.

In fact, when it comes to bowling shoes, each shoe is designed differently as they function independent of each other. One shoe is glossy smooth so it gives the bowler a flawless glide. The other shoe has a stickier sole so it acts as a brake to stop the glide.

This is why bowling shoes not only come in various sizes but also come in a designation of left and right. A right handed bowler will want the brake shoe on the opposite foot than a left handed bowler would wear it.

If you have to rent your bowling shoes at the alley, chances are you will not get to select left or right handed bowling shoes. This is another major reason that anyone who loves to bowl on a regular basis will purchase their own shoes.

Bowling is one of the most popular games in the world and it is a game of utmost precision. Your bowling shoes must be lightweight and fit properly so that you can tell right away if your stance is off. If your foot happens to be positioned improperly, it can ruin the chance for a strike.

Bowling shoes today are much more fashionable than in times past. They look more like sneakers. Of course you can still buy the more traditional appearing shoe. In fact, bowling shoes come in a wide variety of styles and colors as it isn't the outward appearance of the shoe, but rather the sole which plays an important part in the game of bowling.

Bowling shoes must be cared for properly and never worn outside of the bowling alley and certainly never worn on the street. You can buy bowling shoes at a major sporting good store or through your local bowling center. You can actually shop online for bowling shoes too. That way you can get an idea of what is available and the price range. But it is always best to try them on before you buy. You can't really tell how well they are going to feel and fit until they are on your feet. And since bowling shoes are vitally important to your ability to be able to bowl with precision, you want to take the effort to get the best shoes possible. <bio>Anne Morris provides articles on http://www.morebowling.com.
Could your score use improvement?

Here you are, at last! The roar of balls screaming down polished wooden lanes, the thunder of pins toppling, the delicious fragrance of the cafe and cheers heralding the triumph of a teammate... intense!

You've bowled enough to know that it's a serious sport. Closing your eyes, holding your breath and hoping for the best as you hurl a house ball towards the waiting pins is not your best choice...and you know it.

But just how does that "pro" in the next lane over make his bowling ball do those awesome tricks?

His ball screams from one side of the lane to the other, only to come out of nowhere, right into that sweet spot and "STRIKE!" again and again.

The answer is simple. By taking advantage of the ball's center of gravity, he gains incredible control over how his ball moves down the lane.

How does the center of gravity work?

Out of all the factors that can affect how a bowling ball moves down the lane, the center of gravity is the one that can make the biggest difference to the beginning bowler. Look at the balls in the pro shop. You will notice a small, off-color dot. This mark denotes the center of gravity on that ball. Just beneath this spot are a couple of ounces of extra weight, which allow the ball to roll straight when the finger holes have been drilled. The ball would wobble down the lane without this extra weight.

Clever bowlers realized that by drilling the holes slightly off of the center of gravity, the ball would be heavier on one side, shifting the center of gravity to that side. The ball would react differently when thrown, hooking to one side or the other, ensuring better control of the ball and hitting more pins, depending on the placement of the grip holes. Amazing!

How can you take advantage of the center of gravity when bowling?

Your local pro shop can help. When you go to purchase your bowling ball, simply have your pro watch you bowl. He has the experience to know just how much "off center" to drill your ball depending on where you stand, how strong you are, the weight and makeup of the ball you choose, how you throw and whether you are right or left handed. He will know just what you need. And the best part... Most shops will drill for free when you purchase your ball!

Taking advantage of your center of gravity is the first step on the path to become a serious bowler. The difference in having a ball with a center of gravity set just for you makes the single biggest difference to a beginning bowler and will help unleash your potential...taking you that next step in your bowling performance. With bigger scores to prove it! <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
Ever since its creation thousands of years ago, bowling has become a sport that people of all ages can enjoy and millions around the world do. Minimally physical, fairly fast-paced and generally quite affordable, there's just something about bowling that hooks people quick. Those who decide to really delve into the sport will likely find themselves shopping for a bowling ball of their own.

Getting a personal bowling ball is a great idea for league players and even casual enthusiasts who play a bit more than once in a while. Shopping for a ball can present a bit of quandary, however. Here's what to consider in a bowling ball:

* Budget. Balls can get rather expensive. It's not a bad idea to set a budget before doing some serious shopping. Very inexpensive balls can roll in at about $50, but professional grade ones will cost in the hundreds or more. It is possible to find good buys on all types of balls by shopping around and even considering used or form lane balls, but many prefer to have their very own, brand new ball.

* Ball type. A bowling ball can have different surface material. This material will help determine its performance when the ball hits the lane. The better the ball, generally, the more friction it provides. This gives a player more control over the ball as it makes its way down a slick lane. The different surfaces include plastic, urethane, reactive resin and particle, or pro-active. Plastic, or polyester, is generally the most affordable and provides the least amount of friction.

This ball is considered a beginner's tool. The urethane bowling ball offers a little more control at a slightly higher price. The reactive resin bowling ball provides more hook possibility and power than the other two options. The pro-active ball is considered more of a tournament player's weapon. It offers the most friction and the best reaction in oil. This type of ball is generally the most expensive.

* Weight. This is another very important consideration. The standard rule of thumb is to find a ball that is roughly about 10 percent of a person's own body weight. Some people might feel more comfortable with a ball that is slightly lighter or heavier, however.

Before taking the plunge and buying a bowling ball, it's not a bad idea to play with several different weights to see what feels the best. The results on the lane are the most important consideration here, even above the standard rule of thumb.

* Color, style. The appearance of the ball might not be the most important consideration for game play, but it can be for morale. Find a ball that not only fits budget and design choice, but all appearance choice for a truly ideal purchase. Balls come in a variety of colors and styles. Basic black is not the only option by a long shot.

Buying a personal bowling ball can be a great investment for someone who likes to roll a lot. Rather than having to adjust to a different ball every game, this investment puts power in a player's hands. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling ball page. </bio>

We're all here to have FUN!

At first glance, bowling looks as simple as throwing a heavy plastic ball down a shiny wooden hallway in order to knock down ten pins at the end. As you'll soon find out, it's so much more! It's a sport that requires physical strength and coordination and mental strategies that are second to none.

Whether you're just going bowling with friends or are starting in a league, you're here to have fun! There are 8 basic rules of etiquette to follow to make the game more enjoyable for everyone:

1. Mind your manners. It's important to follow the rules of any bowling alley you visit, to be polite to staff and courteous to fellow bowlers. Some of the machinery is dangerous, and you can be hurt badly by engaging in horseplay.

2. Wear appropriate attire. Loose, comfortable clothing, socks and bowling shoes are a must. Most people don't relish the idea of putting their tootsies where thousands have gone before, but it is a necessary evil. Not only do bowling shoes protect the finish on the lanes, they protect you from slipping and consequential injuries. If you bowl regularly, you can purchase a pair of your own at the pro shop in your bowling alley or at many shoe stores.

3. Remain behind the foul line. As tempting as it might be to get closer to the pins (They seem so far away at first!), any ball bowled from over the line is considered "dead." In other words, it doesn't count!

4. Give way to the bowler on your right. Instead of rushing to bowl as soon as it's your turn, always give way to a bowler in the lane to your right who is ready to go. If you allow other bowlers to concentrate on their games, they will afford you the same courtesy.

5. Roll, don't pitch the ball. Releasing your ball on an upward swing, or worse yet, pitching it overhand, will damage the lane and, more often than not, end up in the gutter. Release the ball on the forward swing when your arm is lowest to the ground.

6. Cover any extra holes in your ball. If you're bowling with a ball that has additional holes in it, the rules state you must cover them with the palm of your hand before releasing the ball. If you don't the ball doesn't count and is considered "dead."

7. Keeping it out of the gutter. We all get them in the beginning. The dreaded gutter ball can be disheartening at first. A gutter ball cannot contribute to a score. With practice, you'll learn how to keep the ball in the lane. In some leagues, they've modified the rules. If you bowl a gutter ball and it hops out of the gutter and knocks pins down, the pins do count. Be sure to ask what to do if this happens to you.

8. If you have a question, ask. The staff at your bowling alley will be happy to answer questions about anything related to bowling. From the rules of the game to how to complete a scorecard, they are there to help you.

By following these 8 basic rules of etiquette at the bowling alley, everyone will have more fun while learning to bowl! <bio>ImproveBowling offers a free bowling e-course that is great for bowlers interested in bowling tips for improving their skills.
Beyond the ball, the most important piece of personal equipment a bowler can buy is a good pair of shoes. Picking out just the right bowling shoes, however, can take a little time and consideration. The payoff will be a great pair of shoes that help you avoid the rental stand while rolling a good game.

The first place to start when picking out a pair of bowling shoes is with the price. Setting a budget is not a bad idea. Shoes can range from quite affordable to very pricey depending on what specifications you have in mind.

The next consideration is in the style of bowling you actually intend to do. Serious players very likely will want a pair of bowling shoes that matches their throw style. For example, left handed bowlers can buy special shoes that help them set up for the throw just a bit better. This is a small edge, but one many serious bowlers take very to heart. For those who want bowling shoes, but don't have a big budget, ambidextrous shoes might be in order.

When picking out the right shoes and even setting the budget, it's not a bad idea to consider how much play time you actually plan to put in. The more the shoes will get used, the more likely it is you will be better off going with a more expensive, durable pair. Buying a really expensive pair of shoes for an annual trip, however, probably isn't the best use of extra money.

The last thing to consider (beyond size) is standard play habits. For example, do you happen to play more often at a particular lane where you know the conditions? If so, buy a pair of shoes to fit those conditions. If you tend to move around a lot, shoes that offer changeable soles for different lane conditions could be a good idea.

There are some great reasons for those who bowl more than just once in a while to consider getting their own bowling shoes. They include:

* Cost savings. If you're a weekly bowler, a pair of shoes might end up costing less than rentals over the course of a few months.

* Sanitation. For some people, it just doesn't matter how much disinfectant goes into rental shoes, the idea of wearing shoes someone else did just turns their stomach. A good buy in bowling shoes is ideal for these folks.

* Comfort. When a pair of shoes fits and fits right, it can really make a difference in comfort on the lanes.

* Performance. There's just something about having the right shoes on that tends to make game play improve, at least a little. While a good pair of shoes won't take a player's score and increase it by 100 every time, it can provide a little edge that can actually make a big difference.

Anyone who bowls more than once every blue moon would likely benefit from a good pair of personal bowling shoes. Providing comfort, the right fit and perhaps even some cost savings over the long run, this is a small investment in the game that can make a big difference. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling shoes page. </bio>

We've heard it many times before=85 practice makes perfect. And for good reason-it's the truth! The best way to get better at anything is to practice; bowling is no exception. However, how you practice will mean the difference between slowly improving and supercharging your game!

Bowling Tip #1: Use the right tools

In any sport, using the correct equipment for the job you have to do improves your performance. In bowling, the ball is the most important piece of equipment you will use, so choose the right one for the job! Be sure to try out many, and select one that's the right weight, material and finger-grip fit.

Bowling Tip #2: Are you bowling enough?

To progress at bowling, you need to bowl at least once or twice a week. The most economical way to get this amount of practice in is by joining a league. Usually, the more experienced players show up before the game to practice. This is when you can learn the most, from people committed to the sport.

Bowling Tip #3: Learn to walk the walk

While professional bowlers tend to use a 5-step approach, that's just not suitable for someone just learning the sport. Beginners are usually more comfortable with a 4-step approach. You can practice your approach without throwing a single ball. Keep your shoulders square to the front, your head up, arm swing smooth, and your pace consistent and even.

Bowling Tip #4: Let `em roll

Spend time rolling the ball. A bowling ball should never be thrown. How do you tell the difference? A thrown ball will land with a loud "clunk" and then slide a few feet before beginning to roll. A rolled ball lands quietly and quickly rolls down the lane. If you find that you're in the habit of throwing the ball, simply slow down. Try taking a slow, deep breath or two before bowling to settle any anxiety. You will hit more pins with a rolled ball than with a thrown one.

Bowling Tip #5: What you think is what you do

Spend time visualizing and analyzing your shots. Visualize your movements and your shots before you do them. If your ball goes consistently too far right, begin a little further left. You will learn to "feel" when you've bowled a good ball. When you do, write it down before you forget. What did you do? How did the ball feel? Where did the ball hit? Keep it for future reference so you can do it again.

Bowling Tip #6: What if I can't be at the alley enough to practice?

Any smooth surface with a long, clear distance is suitable for practicing your approach. It's not safe to practice the release, however, as a bowling ball will easily roll straight through walls if you miss your target! Not to mention you'll ruin the surface of your ball. When practicing at home, mark your foul line and arrows in masking tape or other material that will not damage your floor. Also mark where your toes need to be for each step. Practice your approach until it's second nature.

You can practice your arm swing outdoors with a bucket of water with a small hole at the bottom. The water drops on the ground will mark the path of your arm and the direction the ball would go. It's a good way to see if you arc around your body when you bowl and which direction your arm is going. This can be a very enlightening experience.

Bowling Tip #7: Don't spare yourself the trouble

It's a very good idea to practice picking up your spares. A bowler who can consistently pick up his spares can easily hold a 180 average without getting any strikes. It's especially useful to practice bowling at the 7-or 10-pins by aiming at them and bowling across the strike zone (the "x" on the lane) from the opposite side of the lane.

By practicing these bowling techniques on a regular basis, you'll be honing the skills that will help you improve your bowling game! <bio>ImproveBowling offers bowling tips for bowlers who want to take their game to the next level.
What is the tool that will make the single biggest difference in your bowling game? Your ball, of course! If you're just starting out, you may not have your own ball. Luckily, the bowling alley has many "house" balls to choose from. They're the balls that fill the racks around the walls of the bowling alley, and they're free to use.

Light Ball or Heavy Ball?

Bowling balls usually range in weight from 10 to 16 pounds. Many alleys do have children's balls that weigh 6 to 8 pounds, but they aren't heavy enough to be useful to an adult-sized bowler.

Most beginning bowlers are comfortable with a 10 or 12 lb. ball. While it might make you feel macho to hurl a 16-pounder down the lane, if it's too heavy for you to throw comfortably a minimum of 20 times in the span of half an hour, it'll be too hard to control. How macho will you look throwing gutter balls, or worse yet=85dropping the ball?

However, if your ball is too light, it won't have the power to knock the pins down. A light ball thrown by a strong person has little power and tends to bounce down the alley. However, a small woman may feel most comfortable with an 8 or 10 pound ball to start.

House balls are free to use, so consider selecting 2 of different weights. You'll find the weight engraved on the outside of the ball.

Fits Like a Glove=85

The grip of the ball is very important. If the finger holes are too tight your fingers can get stuck, if they are too loose, you could have a hard time keeping hold of the ball.

Check the position of the finger holes as well. Are they too close together or too far apart? Your fingers should slide in and out comfortably, without feeling cramped or stretched out.

Beauty is Only Skin Deep=85

Take a good look at the outside of the ball. It should be smooth and shiny, free of pits, chips, cracks or scratches. If your ball is damaged, it won't roll smoothly down the lane or go where you want it. Many house balls have these flaws, but if you're careful you can usually find one in good condition.

Have a Ball

Of your own, that is! The best way to be certain that you have the right ball for you is to purchase your own ball. The pro shop in your bowling alley will have many choices, and the folks at your pro shop will be able to help you select just the right ball and drill your finger holes for a custom fit.

Whether you choose to use a house ball or buy your own, take into consideration the weight of the ball vs. your physical strength, the size and width of the finger holes and the condition of the outside of the ball. By selecting the right ball for your size and strength, you'll give yourself a distinct advantage on the lanes. <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
You've bowled enough to know you like the sport and want to get better. You listened to all the advice about bowling in a straight line and it's served you pretty well. However, straight-line bowling leaves a lot to be desired=85it's not the most consistent way to get good shots and it leaves you at the mercy of the condition of the lane. Are there other techniques out there that are more effective? Absolutely!

What's after the straight shot?

To supercharge your game, you'll need to learn some more advanced techniques when throwing the ball. The speed at which you approach the shot is known as the tempo. The tempo at which you approach to bowl includes just four steps, so you want it to be right. Your tempo decides how much power your ball will have. You'll also need to learn how to time your release depending on the shot you need to make and the conditions of the lane. And lastly, you'll need to vary the ball you use. The right ball will pick up the pins for any given situation.

What's your tempo?

Beginning bowlers are notorious for a slow, steady tempo. This is fine if you're taking your first shot at the pins, but if you have a spare or a split, your tempo can make or break the shot. If you have two pins standing, a quick tempo will give you a fast, powerful ball that can really knock down the pins. It's your best shot for picking up your frame.

Learning when to let go=85

When you release the ball is the second greatest adjustment in timing you can make. Where you choose to release it, as well as if you put a spin on the ball, will allow you to aim more accurately. Getting just the right combination of the two can give you the highest scores ever and increase your average. A little extra oomph and a quick flick of the wrist will give you control of the hook, skid and speed of your ball with proper release.

Better balls for better bowlers=85

What kind of ball are you using? Using the right ball for the right job means the difference between getting it right and just getting lucky! If you've been using one ball for your all your shots, now's the time to consider adding a "hook" ball to your arsenal. Using a plain plastic ball as your "spare" ball is another good idea. Spare balls roll straighter for picking off the pins left standing.

Using only one tempo, release and ball may have served you well as a beginner, but as you become a serious bowler you'll need to start varying the tempo, timing and strength of your techniques. Matched with the right ball for the right shot, and you'll be bowling with the big boys in no time. Your bowling will be supercharged! <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
The act of trying to knock over a series of pins by rolling a round object towards them may not be new, but this great activity is as challenging and engaging today as it was in the past. Archaeologists have found evidence of bowling-type games from as long as five thousand years ago. This makes bowling one of the oldest sports on record, dating all the way back to the civilization of the ancient Egyptians. Every time you pull on your bowling shoes and head for your favorite lane to try and hit a few strikes, you are participating in a ritual that has amused and challenged humans since the year 3200 BC.

Although the unique pedigree of bowling hardly sounds like a recipe for one of modern America's favorite family pastimes, the truth remains that the game is roughly ninety percent derived from ancient Egypt and ten percent derived from nineteenth century law dodgers. Add a splash of turn of the century technology, and you have the modern game of bowling.

>From what historians have been able to piece together, the basic game of bowling did not change very much between its inception at the dawn of human culture and the middle of the nineteenth century. At that time, the ancient game of ninepin bowling had caught on all over Europe and had made its way to the United States where it was a very popular sport in the underworld community and became a favorite target for gamblers. This led the government of the state of Connecticut to pass an 1841 law that prohibited owning a ninepin bowling alley. This was an attempt to fragment the gambling community by making it impossible for them to meet in the bowling alleys where they usually gathered.

To get around this law, the gamblers in the area simply changed the rules of the game. They added an extra pin to the bowling setup; thereby making their alleys into tenpin bowling alleys. The tenpin bowling alleys were technically legal to own and operate simply because they hadn't existed when Connecticut banned the game of ninepins. The game of tenpins proved to be more fun than its predecessor, and ten is the number of pins that we still play with today.

Once ten pins became the standard for the game, the only aspect of bowling that remained old fashioned by today's perspective was the ball. The first modern bowling ball was not introduced until 1905. Before that time, most bowling balls were made of a wood called "lignum vitae," which was prized both for its light weight and its durability. However, wooden bowling balls did not have as much spring or bounce as the materials we use today.

The first rubber bowling ball hit the market in 1905, and was immediately popular. By 1914 a new rubberized plastic compound was created specifically for use in bowling balls. This compound was known as Mineralite and its use transformed the game, enabling faster rolling speeds and greater precision. This created whole new styles of bowling techniques, many of which are still in use today by both top bowlers and by young children who are just starting out.
Every time a bowler throws their first ball in a frame, there is ONE hope in the forefront of his mind, "Please let it be a STRIKE!"

Knocking down all ten pins with a single bowl is the best possible outcome and the goal to which all bowlers aspire. We all experience "beginners luck" at first, but then seem to lose sight of whatever we did to make it happen.

We all look up to the bowler who can get multiple strikes in a game. Thankfully, there are bowling tips and techniques you can learn to replicate that magic moment=85and bowl a strike over and over again!

Where do you begin?

Right where you stand. Literally. Your foot placement is absolutely fundamental to your success. Even if you do everything else correctly, if your feet are not where they need to be, the ball won't go where it needs to either!

Are you right or left handed? If you are left handed, aim your right second toe at the 1-pin. If you're right handed, aim your left second toe at the 1-pin. It may feel odd at first, but make no mistake=85it works! Watch the foot placement of pro bowlers and you'll see they do it too.

Keeping your proper foot aimed at the head pin allows your shoulders to relax and square up with the foul line, making the ball more likely to go where you want it.

Step up to the swing

You now know where you stand. Let's talk about where we're going=85to your first intentional strike. Cradle your ball and retract your arm. You're just four steps away from bowling your first strike ball! If you are right handed, step with your right foot, then with your left foot. As you step with the left foot your ball arcs downward. Take your third step with your right foot as the force of the ball lifts your arm upwards. Release the ball and use your left leg as a counterweight to keep your balance.

Release the ball

It's important to release the ball at the proper time. If you release too soon, your ball will start rolling too soon and it won't have enough energy to knock the pins down. If you release on the upswing, you're likely to divot the lane at worst, and roll into the gutter at best. The best time to release the ball is just as centrifugal force begins to guide the ball upward. You'll feel it in your hand as gravity begins to pull at the weight of the ball. Be sure your wrist is straight and relaxed and that you're aiming for the strike zone (the little "x" on the lane in between the arrows).

Follow it through

As you release the ball, remember to NOT look at it. Your eyes should remain fixed on your target and your arm should continue its upward arc until after the ball has been released. It happens all too often when a beginner pulls his arm back quickly and watches the ball, only to have it roll off course. Don't let that happen to you! Where your eyes are looking is where your shoulders and feet are usually pointing. And we know that to bowl a strike, they all need to be facing forward!

By following these easy to learn techniques, you'll be bowling strike after strike. Your friends will be amazed and the competition disappointed. You can stand proud knowing that you have mastered the skills needed to bowl a strike again and again! <bio>ImproveBowling offers beginner bowling tips for bowlers who want to take their game to the next level.
The history of bowling dates back thousands of years. It is believed by many that a passion for hitting a bowling pin with an object actually struck humanity sometime in the Stone Age. This passion has never gone away, as evidenced by the worldwide popularity of the sport.

As man evolved, so too did the game and its trademark bowling pin design. Whereas the first pins likely were made of stone or another crude material, the pins of today have come a long way. Modern pins are precise creations typically made of wood. Each one is uniform in design specification down to the thickness of the necks and the height they stand.

The history of bowling marched forward from the Stone Age into actual royal courts. The first mention of the game in written history involves English King Edward III who, in 1366, actually banned the game to force his soldiers to focus more on their archery practice. From Edward's court, the game moved on to the time of King Henry VIII. It was in Henry's time the game became one enjoyed greatly by nobility.

In Colonial America, the game made an appearance and was often associated with gambling. The bowling pin count in this earlier form of the game involved nine pins, rather than the 10 of today.

The game enjoyed widespread popularity that stuck following the invention of the automatic bowling pin spotter in the 1940s. This little creation revolutionized the game and made it much easier for frames to be reset. The game has become so popular, in fact, that bowling pin set ups can now be found in almost every country in the world, with an estimated 95 million fans across the globe.

The standard bowling pin of today has come a long way, as well. Rather than stone or crude wood, a typical American bowling pin is made out of fine maple wood. This type of pin is created using a lathe to form the shape. Once this is done, the wood is coated with plastic and then covered with gloss. The idea is to create a uniform set up that is fairly standard from alley to alley.

The American bowling pin is a pretty strict creation. The standards set by the American Bowling Congress call for very stringent specifications. A standard bowling pin stands precisely 15 inches in height and is not more than 4.75 inches wide at its fattest point. They weigh in at less than four pounds a piece.

Although the standard American bowling pin is what is found in most alleys, there are other options out there in pins. The games played with them are a bit different, but they still revolve around the same concept of bowling to knock them down. Other types of pins used in bowling games include the candlepin, the duckpin and the set up for five-pins.

Bowling is a sport that has been enjoyed by people through the ages. From the days before recorded history to the modern, computerized alleys of today, the heart of the game has always involved a bowling pin in one form or fashion. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling pinpage. </bio>

Go to any bowling alley across the country or even around the world on regular league nights and there's one thing that's sure to stand out from all else. That thing? The bowling shirt.

Created to help differentiate one team from another, the bowling shirt does along with this sport as much, and sometimes even more, than the balls, shoes and even the lanes themselves. The importance of a great bowling shirt design should not be discounted.

Coming up with the perfect shirt and the perfect design for a new team or even an older one that wants a more updated look can take some time and study. The effort should include a little bit of fun and maybe some whimsy, too.

The things to consider when setting bowling shirt design styles include:

Pricing: Some custom designed shirts can get rather expensive. Before deciding upon a $75 jersey with a custom design fee that will be tacked on, consider what team members now, and perhaps in the future, can afford. There are some great options on the more affordable market.

Materials: The standard, retro bowling shirt of days gone by was made out of polyester. Offering a full collar and often a button-up design, these shirts remain en vogue today, as well. Still, some teams prefer cotton shirts that provide for better breathing or even special jerseys. Plain old T-shirts of 100 percent cotton often work well, too.

Colors: Every team should have its set colors. Before picking ones for your shirts, try and find out what other teams on the same league have used. If at all possible, come up with a different combination to help your team and its shirts stand out a little from the crowd.

Logo: This doesn't have to be terribly fancy, but it can be a fun addition. Consider the team's name, obviously, being in the design with something bowling related. Or, just go with a neat design for the team name. Pay attention to how many colors are used in the logo. The more colors, the more expensive the end design will be in all likelihood.

Style: This goes beyond the cut and material of the shirts. The style might be the background material coloring. Some teams really enjoy bold, bright, colorful patterns. No one says a great bowling shirt can't be a whimsical paisley or Hawaiian design with the team's logo on it.

Reprint ability: If team members will be come in and out or new shirts might be needed, make sure the design set is one that can be remade when it is needed. If it's a special design, keep the art work or ask the shirt printer to do so.

A great bowling shirt design can help a team really feel like a team. This bowling league tradition is one that can be a lot of fun for those who get into creating the official design, but remember there are some major decisions that will need to be made along the way. From the price down to the colors and logo design, pay attention to details to obtain the best possible shirts to make team pride really stand out. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling shirts page. </bio>

When it comes to a sport that provides lots of family fun, few can match a quick trip to a local bowling alley. Although it might take years to reach "pro" status, almost anyone of any age can play this game. The game can be altered for young children and it is one even teens tend to enjoy, as well.

There are plenty of reasons why a family trip to a bowling alley can be a great idea. They include:

* Bonding. If the idea is to find an activity everyone can enjoy and do together, this beats the television hands down. A quick game at a local bowling alley provides plenty of opportunity for family time that happens to equal fun time, too. Unlike watching television or movies, this particular activity provides lots of opportunity for talking, bonding and respect building.

* Affordable. Bowling is one of those sports that can be very cost effective. Those on a budget can take advantage of lower-priced day trips and rentals of balls and shoes. Families that really get into the action can splurge and buy their own equipment. This can really be a shoestring operation if a family wants or needs it to be.

* Weather isn't a concern. Some other family sports might require ideal weather conditions to enjoy. Rainy days, snowy days and even really, really hot days have no impact on this family activity.

* Self-esteem building. Bowling can actually be a pretty big self-esteem builder. As children and families get better at the game, the improvements will be evident. As long as parents don't put too much pressure on the score and work to make a trip to the bowling alley fun, the confidence booster can be fantastic. It also provides parents an opportunity to teach youngsters to be good sports.

Going to the bowling alley with young children might take a little patience, but there are some things parents can do to help ensure the venture is a great one. These include:

* Exercise patience. Whether it's teenagers or younger children going to the bowling alley, it is very important to remember the game is just that. Children will likely need some good instruction and they might not be all that great starting out. Remember, you are all there to have fun, not bowl a perfect 300.

* Make it a personal competition. Rather than make it a game against each other, try bowling to beat your own personal scores. This can help give kids the leeway they need to learn and take the pressure off.

* Pick the right equipment. Make sure the shoes fit right and the balls aren't too heavy or too light. If these things are in place, the game is a whole lot more fun. Consider using gutter bumpers for really small bowlers. Don't forget to forego them as soon as they are ready. This in itself can be a great confidence builder.

A trip to a bowling alley can provide all the right ingredients for a great family outing. Generally quite affordable and typically very enjoyable, this particular sport is one that can be enjoyed by almost anyone. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling alley page. </bio>

Within each category you'll need several items that fit the description.

Here are a few examples:

* Christmas song titles: "Jingle Bells," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "The First Noel," "Silent Night," "Away in a Manger"

* Christmas sweets: candy canes, sugar cookies, chocolate-covered cherries, ribbon candy, chocolate orange

* Christmas dinner: ham, turkey, yams, cranberry sauce, stuffing

* Christmas decorations: lights, tree, ornaments, garland, candles

Write all of the items on slips of paper without indicating their categories, but do keep a master list of all of the items and categories to avoid confusion later.

To play the game, have participating employees and guests draw a slip of paper from a Christmas stocking as they enter. Once everyone has arrived, explain that they each hold one item in an unnamed category.

During the office party, their task is to talk to other guests to determine both their category and which partygoers share the same group. The first group to find all of its members and correctly guess the category wins the prize!

Christmas Ornament Bowling

If you're looking for corporate Christmas party games that will have guests on their feet and cheering, this one is right up your alley! Christmas ornament bowling is full of unpredictable fun, and the built in comedy of rolling ornaments is a guaranteed ice breaker!

Setting up this game is easy. Use rolls of wrapping paper to make a lane to keep wayward ornaments from wandering too far out of line. Set up bowling "pins" at one end; miniature Christmas trees are the perfect accent for this holiday party game!

To play, collect several ornaments of various shapes -- as long as they will roll (and not necessarily in a straight line), any shape will do. For safety reasons, avoid ornaments made from glass or those which are otherwise fragile. Have guests take turns rolling the ornaments down the lane. Award one point for each knocked over tree or pin, and the player with the most points wins.

This game is fabulous because it works for parties of any size, whether you need corporate Christmas party games for 10 employees or 100. Simply set up more lanes for bigger crowds and let the good times roll!

An office Christmas party doesn't have to be dull just because it's a corporate event. In fact, you can make this year's one of the most memorable yet when you put some of these corporate Christmas party games to work for you!<bio>For more information on company Christmas party games, fun holiday party invitations and decorations, go to Christmas Party Ideas.</bio>

The price to start your own Independent Consultant business ranges from thirty three dollars (US) for the "Earn your kit" starter program to almost four hundred dollars (US) for the "Deluxe" starter program kit. Potential Consultants can also purchase a website to use for their business (it, of course, is offered at an additional fee).

Jewels by Park Lane promises that consultants will not have to worry about inventory because they won't be required to stock any. They can also take advantage of a car bonus program, freedom from having to pack and deliver products and freedom from collecting on customer accounts. Jewels by Park Lane also promises a weekly commission check for its consultants. Jewels by Park Lane sales Consultants are also encouraged to recruit other sales consultants who will work for them. This down will provide the first consultant with even more earning power which will help him or her move up to different levels within the company.

Unfortunately exact details are a little sketchy and finding out more requires the inputting of personal information. Jewels by Park Lane is set up do have as much person to person contact as possible, which can be a good thing and also a bad thing.

Jewels by Park Lane resembles most other MLM programs out there. Consultants aren't required to recruit a down line, but they won't maximize their earnings without one. Also, having to give out personal information to get better details is a little bit worrisome, especially as we couldn't find anything that promised not to sell the personal information that is collected through their "contact us" portals.

The most you will be out, should you decide to become a Jewels by Park Lane Consultant, is the minimal starter kit fee. After that whether you make money or lose money is up to you, but for a company dealing with jewelry, the start up cost is very low. It is this that gives us incentive to believe that they are a legitimate company out to make their money through jewelry sales and not starter kit profits. This is also something to think about before joining.

As with any company, make sure to do your research on Jewels by Park Lane before signing any contracts. The more you know the better prepared you'll be to earn money!<bio>You can read our Unbiased, expert review of Jewels by Park Lane from Brian Garvin and Jeff West at MLM Review Kings. This article may be used royalty free provided bio and links remain intact.
Many people sing the praises of carpooling, for many different reasons. Most people agree carpooling is a good thing because it reduces the amount of gasoline and oil consumed, thereby conserving the Earth's limited resources. By reducing the amount of fossil fuels burned, carpooling also reduces the amount of vehicle exhaust in the air, decreasing the amount of carcinogens we breathe and the rate at which we destroy our ozone layer, reducing greenhouse gases.

All of these things are positives. However, most people tend to respond to how things affect their pocketbook. Most people will not carpool because it is good for the environment; they carpool because it is good for them, saving money.

The situation isn't hopeless. We need to work with human nature and not against it. Let's take a look at the "slugging" phenomenon that takes place in Washington, D.C. The reason "slugging" is such an interesting phenomenon is that no one is actually doing it out of altruistic tendencies or to save the environment.

Here is what happens: You have two groups of people, one driving into the city to work and the other leaving their cars behind. The people without cars stand in lines according to where they want to travel, and the people with cars stop by and ask for passengers traveling near where they are headed. Each car needs to have at least three people in it, and this is because the person with the car is picking up people to be permitted to drive in the HOV lane.

The HOV lane is also called the carpooling lane, and a car full of passengers may use this lane to travel. Since there are fewer people with three or more passengers in the car, this lane moves faster while other lanes become jammed each morning with traffic. That makes carpooling the quickest way to get to work in the morning =96 quicker, even, than the bus.

If everyone caught on to the wonders of carpooling and legal use of the HOV lane, it would actually slow the lane down as more cars used the lane to travel, but the result would be the other lanes speeding up because the number of cars using them would be reduced. In addition, the pollution in the city would be significantly reduced.

Of course, the point of the matter isn't that people are carpooling to do something good for the world. Without incentives such as the HOV lane and faster travel, people would rather not have other people in their cars. This system works to have people go against their natures and carpool, because the system works with those natures by giving people a reward and something everyone wants badly =96 a quick ride to work and escape from the traffic jam. <bio>Find the best deal on the auto insurance coverage you need.
