You've bowled enough to know you like the sport and want to get better. You listened to all the advice about bowling in a straight line and it's served you pretty well. However, straight-line bowling leaves a lot to be desired=85it's not the most consistent way to get good shots and it leaves you at the mercy of the condition of the lane. Are there other techniques out there that are more effective? Absolutely!

What's after the straight shot?

To supercharge your game, you'll need to learn some more advanced techniques when throwing the ball. The speed at which you approach the shot is known as the tempo. The tempo at which you approach to bowl includes just four steps, so you want it to be right. Your tempo decides how much power your ball will have. You'll also need to learn how to time your release depending on the shot you need to make and the conditions of the lane. And lastly, you'll need to vary the ball you use. The right ball will pick up the pins for any given situation.

What's your tempo?

Beginning bowlers are notorious for a slow, steady tempo. This is fine if you're taking your first shot at the pins, but if you have a spare or a split, your tempo can make or break the shot. If you have two pins standing, a quick tempo will give you a fast, powerful ball that can really knock down the pins. It's your best shot for picking up your frame.

Learning when to let go=85

When you release the ball is the second greatest adjustment in timing you can make. Where you choose to release it, as well as if you put a spin on the ball, will allow you to aim more accurately. Getting just the right combination of the two can give you the highest scores ever and increase your average. A little extra oomph and a quick flick of the wrist will give you control of the hook, skid and speed of your ball with proper release.

Better balls for better bowlers=85

What kind of ball are you using? Using the right ball for the right job means the difference between getting it right and just getting lucky! If you've been using one ball for your all your shots, now's the time to consider adding a "hook" ball to your arsenal. Using a plain plastic ball as your "spare" ball is another good idea. Spare balls roll straighter for picking off the pins left standing.

Using only one tempo, release and ball may have served you well as a beginner, but as you become a serious bowler you'll need to start varying the tempo, timing and strength of your techniques. Matched with the right ball for the right shot, and you'll be bowling with the big boys in no time. Your bowling will be supercharged! <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
Bowling is one of the best ways to improve fitness and coordination while having fun with your family and friends. It's a lot more than simply throwing a heavy ball down a long corridor=85it's one of the most complicated and competitive sports around. By learning to master the top-ten techniques of bowling, you'll gain confidence, have more fun, and beat the competition!

The top 10 bowling techniques:

1. Have perfect Posture In bowling, posture counts! Keep your head up, looking straight at your target. Your shoulders should remain square to the foul line, especially through the swing.

2. Grip the ball properly If you use a house ball, make sure the thumbhole is loose fitting. The thumb frequently swells a little during bowling and if you're forcing your fingers into the holes before you bowl, they're likely to get stuck! If you have your own ball, have your pro shop custom drill your finger holes. If your thumb routinely swells, wrapping it in bowler's tape can help. If your hands sweat, be sure to carry a towel to wipe them on and then dust your hands with a little rosin. If you have a hard time gripping the ball, your pro shop can insert grips into the finger holes.

3. Remember where you are If you're right handed, a good place to start is 2 arrows right of the middle. If you're left handed, start 2 arrows to the left of center. Adjust your position right or left after you have bowled a couple of balls, depending on where your ball ended up.

4. Focus on your target Decide where you're going to aim. If it's your first ball, aim to bowl just to the right of the 1 (front) pin if you're right handed or to the left of it if you're left handed.

5. Breathe Relax yourself by taking three slow, deep breaths. It's common to feel anxious before bowling=85 but the calmer you are, the more control you will have over your ball.

6. Smooth moves The way you carry yourself to bowl decides the speed and power of your ball. Position yourself so you will take four consistently paced steps to throw the ball.

7. Slow down! One of the most common traits beginning bowlers have in common is to rush. It's important to have some speed to deliver the ball correctly, but too much speed is the #1 reason for both gutter balls and 7-10 splits in beginning bowlers!

8. Maintain your balance Be sure to stay upright and focused on your target as you approach the foul line. Keep your shoulders square as you use your leg as a counterweight to keep your balance during the release.

9. Release the ball Keeping your arm slightly bent at the elbow, retract your arm behind your body, cradling the ball in your hand. Keep a smooth straight arc from back to front. Be careful of arcing around your body and back=85that's a common habit in many new bowlers! At the low point of your swing, release the ball. A relaxed arm and wrist make for an effective shot!

10. Follow through Keep your target in sight and your arm continuing its arc forward even after the ball has been released. Just "letting the ball go" and pulling your arm back will cause the ball to roll off-course.

The most important thing to remember when learning to bowl is to have FUN! By learning proper bowling techniques you will make the game much more enjoyable for yourself and for those who bowl with you. <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
What is the tool that will make the single biggest difference in your bowling game? Your ball, of course! If you're just starting out, you may not have your own ball. Luckily, the bowling alley has many "house" balls to choose from. They're the balls that fill the racks around the walls of the bowling alley, and they're free to use.

Light Ball or Heavy Ball?

Bowling balls usually range in weight from 10 to 16 pounds. Many alleys do have children's balls that weigh 6 to 8 pounds, but they aren't heavy enough to be useful to an adult-sized bowler.

Most beginning bowlers are comfortable with a 10 or 12 lb. ball. While it might make you feel macho to hurl a 16-pounder down the lane, if it's too heavy for you to throw comfortably a minimum of 20 times in the span of half an hour, it'll be too hard to control. How macho will you look throwing gutter balls, or worse yet=85dropping the ball?

However, if your ball is too light, it won't have the power to knock the pins down. A light ball thrown by a strong person has little power and tends to bounce down the alley. However, a small woman may feel most comfortable with an 8 or 10 pound ball to start.

House balls are free to use, so consider selecting 2 of different weights. You'll find the weight engraved on the outside of the ball.

Fits Like a Glove=85

The grip of the ball is very important. If the finger holes are too tight your fingers can get stuck, if they are too loose, you could have a hard time keeping hold of the ball.

Check the position of the finger holes as well. Are they too close together or too far apart? Your fingers should slide in and out comfortably, without feeling cramped or stretched out.

Beauty is Only Skin Deep=85

Take a good look at the outside of the ball. It should be smooth and shiny, free of pits, chips, cracks or scratches. If your ball is damaged, it won't roll smoothly down the lane or go where you want it. Many house balls have these flaws, but if you're careful you can usually find one in good condition.

Have a Ball

Of your own, that is! The best way to be certain that you have the right ball for you is to purchase your own ball. The pro shop in your bowling alley will have many choices, and the folks at your pro shop will be able to help you select just the right ball and drill your finger holes for a custom fit.

Whether you choose to use a house ball or buy your own, take into consideration the weight of the ball vs. your physical strength, the size and width of the finger holes and the condition of the outside of the ball. By selecting the right ball for your size and strength, you'll give yourself a distinct advantage on the lanes. <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
Could your score use improvement?

Here you are, at last! The roar of balls screaming down polished wooden lanes, the thunder of pins toppling, the delicious fragrance of the cafe and cheers heralding the triumph of a teammate... intense!

You've bowled enough to know that it's a serious sport. Closing your eyes, holding your breath and hoping for the best as you hurl a house ball towards the waiting pins is not your best choice...and you know it.

But just how does that "pro" in the next lane over make his bowling ball do those awesome tricks?

His ball screams from one side of the lane to the other, only to come out of nowhere, right into that sweet spot and "STRIKE!" again and again.

The answer is simple. By taking advantage of the ball's center of gravity, he gains incredible control over how his ball moves down the lane.

How does the center of gravity work?

Out of all the factors that can affect how a bowling ball moves down the lane, the center of gravity is the one that can make the biggest difference to the beginning bowler. Look at the balls in the pro shop. You will notice a small, off-color dot. This mark denotes the center of gravity on that ball. Just beneath this spot are a couple of ounces of extra weight, which allow the ball to roll straight when the finger holes have been drilled. The ball would wobble down the lane without this extra weight.

Clever bowlers realized that by drilling the holes slightly off of the center of gravity, the ball would be heavier on one side, shifting the center of gravity to that side. The ball would react differently when thrown, hooking to one side or the other, ensuring better control of the ball and hitting more pins, depending on the placement of the grip holes. Amazing!

How can you take advantage of the center of gravity when bowling?

Your local pro shop can help. When you go to purchase your bowling ball, simply have your pro watch you bowl. He has the experience to know just how much "off center" to drill your ball depending on where you stand, how strong you are, the weight and makeup of the ball you choose, how you throw and whether you are right or left handed. He will know just what you need. And the best part... Most shops will drill for free when you purchase your ball!

Taking advantage of your center of gravity is the first step on the path to become a serious bowler. The difference in having a ball with a center of gravity set just for you makes the single biggest difference to a beginning bowler and will help unleash your potential...taking you that next step in your bowling performance. With bigger scores to prove it! <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
We're all here to have FUN!

At first glance, bowling looks as simple as throwing a heavy plastic ball down a shiny wooden hallway in order to knock down ten pins at the end. As you'll soon find out, it's so much more! It's a sport that requires physical strength and coordination and mental strategies that are second to none.

Whether you're just going bowling with friends or are starting in a league, you're here to have fun! There are 8 basic rules of etiquette to follow to make the game more enjoyable for everyone:

1. Mind your manners. It's important to follow the rules of any bowling alley you visit, to be polite to staff and courteous to fellow bowlers. Some of the machinery is dangerous, and you can be hurt badly by engaging in horseplay.

2. Wear appropriate attire. Loose, comfortable clothing, socks and bowling shoes are a must. Most people don't relish the idea of putting their tootsies where thousands have gone before, but it is a necessary evil. Not only do bowling shoes protect the finish on the lanes, they protect you from slipping and consequential injuries. If you bowl regularly, you can purchase a pair of your own at the pro shop in your bowling alley or at many shoe stores.

3. Remain behind the foul line. As tempting as it might be to get closer to the pins (They seem so far away at first!), any ball bowled from over the line is considered "dead." In other words, it doesn't count!

4. Give way to the bowler on your right. Instead of rushing to bowl as soon as it's your turn, always give way to a bowler in the lane to your right who is ready to go. If you allow other bowlers to concentrate on their games, they will afford you the same courtesy.

5. Roll, don't pitch the ball. Releasing your ball on an upward swing, or worse yet, pitching it overhand, will damage the lane and, more often than not, end up in the gutter. Release the ball on the forward swing when your arm is lowest to the ground.

6. Cover any extra holes in your ball. If you're bowling with a ball that has additional holes in it, the rules state you must cover them with the palm of your hand before releasing the ball. If you don't the ball doesn't count and is considered "dead."

7. Keeping it out of the gutter. We all get them in the beginning. The dreaded gutter ball can be disheartening at first. A gutter ball cannot contribute to a score. With practice, you'll learn how to keep the ball in the lane. In some leagues, they've modified the rules. If you bowl a gutter ball and it hops out of the gutter and knocks pins down, the pins do count. Be sure to ask what to do if this happens to you.

8. If you have a question, ask. The staff at your bowling alley will be happy to answer questions about anything related to bowling. From the rules of the game to how to complete a scorecard, they are there to help you.

By following these 8 basic rules of etiquette at the bowling alley, everyone will have more fun while learning to bowl! <bio>ImproveBowling offers a free bowling e-course that is great for bowlers interested in bowling tips for improving their skills.
Every time a bowler throws their first ball in a frame, there is ONE hope in the forefront of his mind, "Please let it be a STRIKE!"

Knocking down all ten pins with a single bowl is the best possible outcome and the goal to which all bowlers aspire. We all experience "beginners luck" at first, but then seem to lose sight of whatever we did to make it happen.

We all look up to the bowler who can get multiple strikes in a game. Thankfully, there are bowling tips and techniques you can learn to replicate that magic moment=85and bowl a strike over and over again!

Where do you begin?

Right where you stand. Literally. Your foot placement is absolutely fundamental to your success. Even if you do everything else correctly, if your feet are not where they need to be, the ball won't go where it needs to either!

Are you right or left handed? If you are left handed, aim your right second toe at the 1-pin. If you're right handed, aim your left second toe at the 1-pin. It may feel odd at first, but make no mistake=85it works! Watch the foot placement of pro bowlers and you'll see they do it too.

Keeping your proper foot aimed at the head pin allows your shoulders to relax and square up with the foul line, making the ball more likely to go where you want it.

Step up to the swing

You now know where you stand. Let's talk about where we're going=85to your first intentional strike. Cradle your ball and retract your arm. You're just four steps away from bowling your first strike ball! If you are right handed, step with your right foot, then with your left foot. As you step with the left foot your ball arcs downward. Take your third step with your right foot as the force of the ball lifts your arm upwards. Release the ball and use your left leg as a counterweight to keep your balance.

Release the ball

It's important to release the ball at the proper time. If you release too soon, your ball will start rolling too soon and it won't have enough energy to knock the pins down. If you release on the upswing, you're likely to divot the lane at worst, and roll into the gutter at best. The best time to release the ball is just as centrifugal force begins to guide the ball upward. You'll feel it in your hand as gravity begins to pull at the weight of the ball. Be sure your wrist is straight and relaxed and that you're aiming for the strike zone (the little "x" on the lane in between the arrows).

Follow it through

As you release the ball, remember to NOT look at it. Your eyes should remain fixed on your target and your arm should continue its upward arc until after the ball has been released. It happens all too often when a beginner pulls his arm back quickly and watches the ball, only to have it roll off course. Don't let that happen to you! Where your eyes are looking is where your shoulders and feet are usually pointing. And we know that to bowl a strike, they all need to be facing forward!

By following these easy to learn techniques, you'll be bowling strike after strike. Your friends will be amazed and the competition disappointed. You can stand proud knowing that you have mastered the skills needed to bowl a strike again and again! <bio>ImproveBowling offers beginner bowling tips for bowlers who want to take their game to the next level.
The wicket keeper is an essential and key part of the cricket team. Every team needs a reliable wicket keeper. As well as taking catches, stumping the batsmen and taking run outs, the wicket keeper is one of the team's most important players: motivating and inspiring the bowlers and fielders to raise their game and WIN.

To be a wicket keeper you need fast reactions and precise judgement as you have very little time to react to such things as fast deliveries especially if there are changes and deviations in the balls line due to variations in swing, movement off the pitch and edges.

You need to be alert and have high levels of concentration. Like a top batsmen you want to be able to 'switch on and off' your concentration between deliveries and overs to avoid getting mentally tired, as it's impossible to fully concentrate non-stop for hours at a time. High levels of fitness and flexibility are also very important for a wicket keeper as it can be very tiring because you are effectively doing hundreds of squats and diving around the field. So stay fit, warm up and down and stretch thoroughly to remain in peak condition and avoid injury.

Equipment for wicket keeping

-Wicket keeping gloves (and inner gloves), -Box, -Wicket keeping pads, -Helmet.

Basic technique: Wicket keeping stance

You can stand up to spin bowlers and slower paced bowlers. The wicket keepers stance is quite straight forward, you need to stand about one step behind the stumps, making sure no part of your body or equipment is in front of the line of the stumps.

Crouch down with your left foot (reverse for left hand batsmen) inline with middle stump, therefore on you are crouched a little on off side. Try to keep your head still and eyes level during the delivery to help you judge the pace and line. You should be balanced and relaxed with your weight slightly forward on the balls of your feet. Be alert and ready to react to the delivery.

Catching the ball

When you are catching the ball, aim to get your head/eyes above the line of the ball and your body behind the line of the ball. As the ball rises from the pitch, rise from the crouching position with the ball, so you mirror the height of the ball. Watch the ball into your hands and catch it with your fingers pointing downwards. You'll need to cushion the impact of the ball hitting your gloves when catching by 'giving' with your hands. If the ball continues to rise as it reaches you, step with your outside foot backwards and across, rotating your body outwards, taking the ball on one side of the body. To catch a ball delivered on the off side or leg side, move your feet and body across immediately to get your head back into line with the delivery. (Move the outside foot first and follow with the inside.) Rise with the ball as discussed above and 'give' with hands to reduce the impact.

If you are standing back which you should be to medium and fast bowlers take your stance as discussed above, however stand in a position so that the ball is taken once it begins to drop.

Sometimes you may have to dive to take wide deliveries or thick edges, always try to take the ball in two hands if possible, roll after the dive if you can to reduce the impact of landing and changes of injury.

Stumping

You can attemp a stumping if the batsman is out of the crease after you have caught the delivery. Once you've taken the ball move your body weight towards stumps and move hands fast to break the wickets. <bio>Discover amazing cricket tips and tricks and learn how to play awesome cricket.
Beyond the ball, the most important piece of personal equipment a bowler can buy is a good pair of shoes. Picking out just the right bowling shoes, however, can take a little time and consideration. The payoff will be a great pair of shoes that help you avoid the rental stand while rolling a good game.

The first place to start when picking out a pair of bowling shoes is with the price. Setting a budget is not a bad idea. Shoes can range from quite affordable to very pricey depending on what specifications you have in mind.

The next consideration is in the style of bowling you actually intend to do. Serious players very likely will want a pair of bowling shoes that matches their throw style. For example, left handed bowlers can buy special shoes that help them set up for the throw just a bit better. This is a small edge, but one many serious bowlers take very to heart. For those who want bowling shoes, but don't have a big budget, ambidextrous shoes might be in order.

When picking out the right shoes and even setting the budget, it's not a bad idea to consider how much play time you actually plan to put in. The more the shoes will get used, the more likely it is you will be better off going with a more expensive, durable pair. Buying a really expensive pair of shoes for an annual trip, however, probably isn't the best use of extra money.

The last thing to consider (beyond size) is standard play habits. For example, do you happen to play more often at a particular lane where you know the conditions? If so, buy a pair of shoes to fit those conditions. If you tend to move around a lot, shoes that offer changeable soles for different lane conditions could be a good idea.

There are some great reasons for those who bowl more than just once in a while to consider getting their own bowling shoes. They include:

* Cost savings. If you're a weekly bowler, a pair of shoes might end up costing less than rentals over the course of a few months.

* Sanitation. For some people, it just doesn't matter how much disinfectant goes into rental shoes, the idea of wearing shoes someone else did just turns their stomach. A good buy in bowling shoes is ideal for these folks.

* Comfort. When a pair of shoes fits and fits right, it can really make a difference in comfort on the lanes.

* Performance. There's just something about having the right shoes on that tends to make game play improve, at least a little. While a good pair of shoes won't take a player's score and increase it by 100 every time, it can provide a little edge that can actually make a big difference.

Anyone who bowls more than once every blue moon would likely benefit from a good pair of personal bowling shoes. Providing comfort, the right fit and perhaps even some cost savings over the long run, this is a small investment in the game that can make a big difference. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling shoes page. </bio>

A bowler who has the ability to bowl swing is an important asset in any cricket team as swing bowling is a great way to baffle a batman, add pressure and take wickets. The swing bowler has the ability to move the ball in the air either away from the batsman or in towards the batsmen. The swing is created by holding the cricket ball in a specific way so that when it is released from the hand the varying levels of air resistance combined with the position the seam is directed causes the ball to swing in the air.

The swing is accentuated by polishing and shining one side of the ball so that is smooth relative to the other side, which should get roughened up through the natural course of play. Select a side to shine at the start of the match and ensure all the bowlers and fielders know which side to polish. You can polish it by rubbing sweat into it and then rubbing it on your cricket trousers.

There are three generally recognised swing delivery types, in swing, out swing and reverse swing.

The out swing delivery is a ball which when bowled by a right handed bowler to a right handed batsman swings from the leg side towards the off side. The aim of the out swinger is to encourage the batsman into playing a drive and ideally the swing will increase the chance of getting an edge and getting the batsmen out caught behind, so make sure you've got some good catchers behind the stumps. You want to pitch the ball quite full, aiming at or just outside off stump so that the batsman is forced to play at the ball.

The grip for the out swing delivery is quite simple and provided the seam is up right at the point of release it should swing. You need to hold the ball as normal for a medium paced delivery with the seam vertical, however for the out swinger the seam needs to be vertical and pointing towards first or second slip at about a 15 angle, so that your fingers will be running slight across the seam. The shiny side should face the leg side of the batsmen, thus the rough side faces the off side and the direction of swing. The increased air resistance on the rough side and seam position will cause it to swing through the air towards the offside. The run up should be slightly angled and bowled from close to the stumps.

The in swing delivery is basically the reverse of the away swing in that when bowled from a right handed bowler it swings in towards a right handed batsmen from the off side towards the leg side. Have a straighter run up and deliver the ball slightly wider on the crease. In contrast to the away swing bowler, the in swing bowler aims to get the batsmen out LBW or bowled by pitching it up. Aim to bowl it so that it swings from outside off stump and pitches in line with middle and off stumps, be careful though because if you start it too straight it will swing down leg side and be easy for the batsman to hit away.

Tip - If you find yourself swinging the ball uncontrollably, hold the ball across the seam so that the seam runs horizontally, this will help negate and reduce the amount of swing.

You need to make sure that your bowlers and fielders are aware of which side of the ball in polished and that is constantly shined between deliveries. Most bowlers will shine the ball themselves but it is always useful to nominate one or two fielders to shine the ball as well while the bowler is walking back to his mark.

Changing weather conditions have an often noticeable affect on the amount that the cricket ball will swing. Dry hot sunny days don't favour swing bowling, whereas overcast, cloudy conditions are found to be most influential at generating more swing. So take this into consideration when deciding who to bowl if you are captain. <bio>Discover amazing cricket tips and tricks and learn how to play awesome cricket so that you can explode your cricket results and destroy your opposition!
When you watch cricket on television, it can appear to be quite an easy and simple sport, but under the helmet of the batter, there is a whole different game going on inside the batters mind in an attempt to banish any possible distractions, and focus every bit of mental energy on the ball as it is released from the bowlers hand, this is the psychological side to batting.

As a batter, your aim is to score runs, stay in and help your team reach a certain particular target. To achieve this, you need to be in the correct mental state. To help reach this state of fierce concentration there are several things that you must do.

Firstly, you need to be clear your mind of any possible distractions, distractions can come in many forms; these may be concerns about the pitch, fielder's comments, being scared of the ball, fear of getting out etc. These matters need to be cleared out of the head prior to the start of the bowlers run up to allow for the stages of concentration that will soon follow, this is vital, if there are distractions floating around your mind, you are sure not to be focussing to your optimum level and are more likely to male a mistake.

Every ball requires you to concentrate at your highest possible levels, and in so you should have a strategy to help you concentrate. I was taught by a prominent cricketing figure this following method that I find extremely useful in exploiting my maximum concentration levels. Firstly, after clearing all distractions from your mind, as the bowler starts to run up, you should enter a state of fine focus, in this state, your mind should have no negative thoughts and be concentrating on the top half of the bowler, you vision should be like a television, only focussed in on the top half of the bowler as her approaches, in this period you should have constructive positive thoughts, for example I say to myself over and over "Focus, watch the ball, focus, watch the ball" etc... By doing this and saying positive statements, it stops negative thoughts entering the mind and also stops any possible distractions drifting into your thoughts.

As the bowler enters his final steps your focus level should increase to what is commonly known as a state of fierce focus, in this stage all mental powers should be focusing on the ball and the ball only, your mental screen should now just be the size of the ball. This allows your brain to compute and work out the line, length and flight of the ball and so gives you the maximum amount of time to help you get your feet and body into position as early as possible helping giving you the best possible chances of making a good decision and playing a good shot.

This should be applied to nets as well as matches as this will get you well trained and so it becomes second nature.

The Mental and Psychological side to Cricket - Bowling

As a bowler, like batting, to gain optimum results, there are certain thought processes that need to take place. Again, like batting you need to eradicate possible distractions from your mind as you prepare to bowl, such distractions include worries about the batsmen "hitting out", fear of making mistakes e.g. bowling down the leg side/a wide etc. With negative thoughts running through your mind, you are much more likely to tense up and make mistakes, your thought patterns should always remain positive.

Bowlers need a game plan (I discuss game plans in the free e-book), and they should plan their next ball as they are walking back to their mark. If you are deciding what ball you are going to ball while you run up, then you are likely to get caught in two minds and make mistakes. If you decide prior to starting your run up what type of ball you are going to bowl, e.g. slower ball, it gives you the opportunity to really focus and concentrate on how and where you want to pitch the ball. How you go about deciding where about you focus on e.g. the base of off stump, or where you want to pitch the ball is very much a personal matter which should be worked out in nets as everyone is different. <bio>Alastair Canaway, owner of http://www.1cricketlinks.com offers the best in cricket tips and articles.
Everyone who loves their sport knows that every time you play, you have to be in it for 100%. In bowling, we make sure that our technique is fine-tuned and that we always choose the best equipment we can. We have a ball for the first shot of the frame, a spare ball, and maybe even a hook ball. Whether we own the latest $250.00 state-of-the-art shoes or rent a reliable old pair form the bowling alley, we know that bowling shoes give us an edge as well. Unfortunately=85or fortunately, as the case may be, there is one thing at the bowling alley that you don't have complete control over; and that is the lane itself.

Lanes are like snowflakes=85

Just like snowflakes, you'll never find two lanes that are exactly alike. We spend most of our game figuring out and overcoming those differences, whether we realize it or not. But what makes the lanes different?

Where do you bowl? Older lanes, like older homes, have "character." They'll develop wear marks and divots, and if not refinished on a regular basis, will definitely cause your ball to make some unexpected moves. If the lane is damaged, it can interfere with the trajectory of your ball in a major way.

Many bowling alleys are choosing to simply cover their old, hardwood floors with a synthetic material that looks like wood instead of replacing them completely. The softer surface over worn wooden boards can impact on your ball's performance.

The brand new bowling alleys have fully synthetic surfaces on their lanes. While they look the same as wood, they are smoother and slipperier. If you're used to bowling on an old hardwood lane, it might take some practice to get used to the new surface.

Oil helps the ball go `round=85

Bowling alleys use thin coats of oil to help preserve the playing surface of the lanes. The oil is applied in one of many patterns, each pattern affecting the ball in a different manner.

Sometimes the bowling alley attendant might be a little too heavy on the oil, causing the balls to slip and slide instead of grabbing hold and rolling. Too little oil, whether by overuse of the lane between oilings or too little application of oil, can cause your ball to grab hold too early and use up all its power before it reaches the back end.

Because of the imperfections in the oil-application process, even lanes within the same bowling alley will be different. The same lane will be different in the evening than when it was freshly oiled in the morning, too.

So, my "lucky" lane is not all in my head?

Chances are, your "lucky" lane is special to you because of the way its imperfections compliment your own unique bowling style. There are many reasons why no two lanes bowl the same way. Get friendly with the workers at your bowling alley, and they will be able to tell you the best lanes to bowl. They can also tell you about how the oil is applied and the best techniques to use on that particular oil pattern. Lanes that are played on more often are likely to have less, or dried out oil and should be avoided.

Of course=85the easiest way to figure out what your bowling conditions are is to take advantage of the practice round before the scoring starts! With a little know how, you can make any lane your "lucky" lane. <bio>ImproveBowling offers a bowling guide ebook that is great for bowlers interested in improving their bowling game, especially for beginner and recreational bowlers.
It's gained a reputation of being a game for the those without class and manners, but the truth is bowling is a an ancient sport that carries with it quite a few rules about proper behavior. These rules are taken very seriously by those who frequent the alleys, so it's a very good idea for beginners to learn a bit about the sport and its expected bowling lane etiquette.

Bowling itself dates back thousands of years into the history of man. It is believed that bowling pre-dates written history. As the years marched forward, so did the game and along with it the rules of the road. From ancient man and the courts of English kings to local alleys in cities all over the world, bowling alley etiquette has evolved into what players of today expect.

Learning how to behave on the lanes is as much an important part of the game as figuring out how to score correctly. There are some major dos and don'ts when it comes to bowling lane etiquette. They include:

Do's * Get the proper gear. It is considered a major breach of bowling lane etiquette to wear street shoes on the lanes. Make sure to have on the proper shoes. Get rentals if you don't have your own. Street shoes can damage the lanes and disrupt the oil pattern on them (not to mention the fact many are not designed to handle the slick surface).

* Observe right of way. This is perhaps the number one rule of bowling lane etiquette. The general rule of play is to allow the bowler to the right of your lane to go first if you both arrive at the same time. This helps ensure that concentration isn't interrupted by two people trying to bowl simultaneously.

* Use common courtesy. Bowling is a game that many people take very seriously. Keep common courtesy and politeness in the front of your mind.

Don'ts * Interrupt bowlers. It is considered a serious breach of bowling lane etiquette to talk to bowlers when they are trying to make a shot. Let the person who has the lane concentrate.

* Heckle. While it might be fun to pick on a friend who has bowled a bad frame, it is considered very rude to do so, especially in league play. Remember common courtesy and this bowling lane rule will make perfect sense.

* Cheat. This is a serious breach of bowling lane etiquette and something that just shouldn't be done. Keep the game clean and fun and let the pins and the score fall where they may. While it is nearly impossible to cheat with computerized scoring, some manual set ups still exist.

* Talk too loud or yell. Rowdy groups on the lanes can cause problems for everyone in the vicinity. Have fun, but try to keep the ruckus to a minimum.

Bowling is an ancient sport that has evolved through the years. From ancient man and stone objects to modern man and computerized scoring, the game might have changed a bit, but the basic rules of the road remain. The game is meant to be fun and it does carry with it a need for good sporting conduct. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling lane page. </bio>

We've heard it many times before=85 practice makes perfect. And for good reason-it's the truth! The best way to get better at anything is to practice; bowling is no exception. However, how you practice will mean the difference between slowly improving and supercharging your game!

Bowling Tip #1: Use the right tools

In any sport, using the correct equipment for the job you have to do improves your performance. In bowling, the ball is the most important piece of equipment you will use, so choose the right one for the job! Be sure to try out many, and select one that's the right weight, material and finger-grip fit.

Bowling Tip #2: Are you bowling enough?

To progress at bowling, you need to bowl at least once or twice a week. The most economical way to get this amount of practice in is by joining a league. Usually, the more experienced players show up before the game to practice. This is when you can learn the most, from people committed to the sport.

Bowling Tip #3: Learn to walk the walk

While professional bowlers tend to use a 5-step approach, that's just not suitable for someone just learning the sport. Beginners are usually more comfortable with a 4-step approach. You can practice your approach without throwing a single ball. Keep your shoulders square to the front, your head up, arm swing smooth, and your pace consistent and even.

Bowling Tip #4: Let `em roll

Spend time rolling the ball. A bowling ball should never be thrown. How do you tell the difference? A thrown ball will land with a loud "clunk" and then slide a few feet before beginning to roll. A rolled ball lands quietly and quickly rolls down the lane. If you find that you're in the habit of throwing the ball, simply slow down. Try taking a slow, deep breath or two before bowling to settle any anxiety. You will hit more pins with a rolled ball than with a thrown one.

Bowling Tip #5: What you think is what you do

Spend time visualizing and analyzing your shots. Visualize your movements and your shots before you do them. If your ball goes consistently too far right, begin a little further left. You will learn to "feel" when you've bowled a good ball. When you do, write it down before you forget. What did you do? How did the ball feel? Where did the ball hit? Keep it for future reference so you can do it again.

Bowling Tip #6: What if I can't be at the alley enough to practice?

Any smooth surface with a long, clear distance is suitable for practicing your approach. It's not safe to practice the release, however, as a bowling ball will easily roll straight through walls if you miss your target! Not to mention you'll ruin the surface of your ball. When practicing at home, mark your foul line and arrows in masking tape or other material that will not damage your floor. Also mark where your toes need to be for each step. Practice your approach until it's second nature.

You can practice your arm swing outdoors with a bucket of water with a small hole at the bottom. The water drops on the ground will mark the path of your arm and the direction the ball would go. It's a good way to see if you arc around your body when you bowl and which direction your arm is going. This can be a very enlightening experience.

Bowling Tip #7: Don't spare yourself the trouble

It's a very good idea to practice picking up your spares. A bowler who can consistently pick up his spares can easily hold a 180 average without getting any strikes. It's especially useful to practice bowling at the 7-or 10-pins by aiming at them and bowling across the strike zone (the "x" on the lane) from the opposite side of the lane.

By practicing these bowling techniques on a regular basis, you'll be honing the skills that will help you improve your bowling game! <bio>ImproveBowling offers bowling tips for bowlers who want to take their game to the next level.
Cricket, although international and popular all over the world, is quintessentially a very English game. It is played between two teams, each consisting of eleven players. At any time on the field are two from one side (the batting side) and eleven from the opposing side (who would be bowling/fielding).

The first team that have all eleven players on the pitch are the fielding team and the team that have just two players on the field are the batting team. Cricket is usually played on a large oval pitch on which the fielders are distributed around the pitch according to the instructions of their captain and bowler. In cricket there are specific fielding positions on the pitch, all with their own unique name.

In, or around, the middle of the pitch, there is an area called "the wicket". This is a thin strip of grass that is 22 yards long, 8 foot 8 inches wide and very flat. It has a set of three stumps also know as wickets, at each end. The three "stumps" are about a yard high and they are set in to the ground a few inches apart. They are connected by two wooden "bails" that are balanced on indentations on top of the stumps. The aim for the bowler is to knock the bails off of the top of the stumps by "bowling" the ball at them. And the object for the batsman is to defend the wicket from the ball. "Bowling" is a way of throwing the ball that is unique to cricket, where the arm must remain straight as the ball is delivered.

The bowler has to "bowl the ball overarm while keeping his arm straight all of the time. If he bends his arm and is, in effect, throwing the ball, it is not allowed and called a 'no ball'. The bowler bowls the ball six times each "over", then another bowler bowls six balls from the other end of the wicket. The bowlers can be changed for other members of the fielding team, as usually each team will have at least four people who would be classed as bowlers.

The object for the batsman is to hit the ball away from his wicket, far enough from the fielders so that he has enough time to run between the two sets of stumps and so score a "run". He can also score a run without hitting the ball as long as he can run before the fielders knock the bails off of the stumps; this is called a 'bye'.

The other batsman stands at the other end of the wicket and has to run at the same time as the batsman facing the ball. The batsman has to reach the other end of the wicket to the crease before the fielders knock the bails off of the stumps. The batting crease is an area that is 122cms in front of the stumps. When the batsman is in this he cannot be out by the fielding team knocking the bales off of the stumps.

When the bowler is bowling the batsman has to defend the stumps from the ball being bowled with his bat whether or not he is standing in front of the crease. But if he stops the ball from hitting the stumps by using his legs then he can be out by LBW, or "leg before wicket".

He can also be out by one of the fielders catching a ball that he has hit before it has bounced on the ground. When the batsman are running between the stumps, if either of the batsmen are not in the crease when the fielder hits the stumps and knocks the bails off with the ball, then they are "run out".

Each time the two batsmen run successfully between the two sets of stumps, they get one run. If the batsman manages to hit the ball over the rope that marks the boundary when it has bounced or rolled on the ground, he gets four runs. If he hits the ball over the boundary without it bouncing on the ground, then he gets six runs. Each "innings" lasts until 10 out of the 11 batsmen are out (two batsman must always be on the wicket, so one batsman can not bat on his own). This is because the batting team need two players on the pitch at a time so that one can be at each end.

The team that wins is the team that has the highest number of runs after everybody has batted or the number of overs being played runs out. If the two teams have he same score then the match is a draw, unless one team has fewer players out than the other. Most club games are played over one "innings". This means that each team bats and fields once. But some games are played over two innings where each team bats and fields twice. Games are very often played over a certain number of "overs" that are agreed beforehand by the captains or according to league regulations and can be altered according to the weather, if play is interrupted. In club cricket both teams usually play in cricket whites. <bio>Do you want a brand new cricket bat?
While most people enjoy wearing a hat, only a few know how they are made. The type of hat determines the construction and materials used. For example, some hats that are made from a generic blank are blocked into shape with steam and heat. While others that are sewn, some are made from weirdly shaped pieces of material that don't even resemble the hat to be made.

Some of the hats that get blocked are felt and straw. In industrial uses, large machines can block more than one hat at once. Blocking hats was originally done by hand, but is now done by machine. Depending on the style of hat to be made the brim and crown may be manufactured using two different forms.

There are many different kinds of hats that all start out looking the same, since steaming the hat is what allows it to take its shape. Fedora, bowlers, and other types of hats are made as a shaped felt blank. Any shaping or creases that are desired are put in after the hats are placed onto the hat block. This is the same process that straw hats are also made.

The hat that is often coated in a stiffener and/or protective varnish is the straw hat. Whereas felt hats contain sizing to stiffen them. There are many other processes to making hats. Adding a brim wire is also necessary to finishing a blocked hat.

Everyone is familiar with baseball caps; these types of hats are shaped and sewn. The fabric used to make the hat is many times treated with a stiffener and then sewn together. If the crown or brim needs to be shaped, this procedure is often done after the hat is put together, except if it would harm the hat.

After the procedure the hat should be finished and be like any other hat.

The hat has been through a lot of complex procedures by the time it arrives at the local store. Since a hat is a 3 dimensional object the process of making it is really more like sculpting art than garment making.

The next time you wear a hat maybe you will think of it as wearing a beautiful sculptor instead of a simple article of clothing. <bio>Red Hat Society Ladies stop by http://www.marylusuniquegiftsonline.com to see a wide variety of Red Hat merchandise.
There are really only two needed items to play the game of bowling. The first is the ball and the second is the bowling shoes. You don't need to own either of these as it is standard practice to rent them at the bowling alley. However it won't take you long to realize that most serious bowlers have their own ball and bowling shoes.

The reason for that is fairly simple when it comes to the bowling shoes. And if you have ever used rented bowling shoes, you probably can well understand why. If the bowling shoes do not fit properly then it is distracting. If you have your own pair of bowling shoes then they become an extension of your feet, they fit properly and feel good and you get used to their little quirks and the way they glide on the lane.

If you are new to bowling you may not even realize that special shoes are mandatory. They are because of the gliding motion one makes when approaching the lane and releasing the ball. Regular tennis shoes cannot give that glide.

In fact, when it comes to bowling shoes, each shoe is designed differently as they function independent of each other. One shoe is glossy smooth so it gives the bowler a flawless glide. The other shoe has a stickier sole so it acts as a brake to stop the glide.

This is why bowling shoes not only come in various sizes but also come in a designation of left and right. A right handed bowler will want the brake shoe on the opposite foot than a left handed bowler would wear it.

If you have to rent your bowling shoes at the alley, chances are you will not get to select left or right handed bowling shoes. This is another major reason that anyone who loves to bowl on a regular basis will purchase their own shoes.

Bowling is one of the most popular games in the world and it is a game of utmost precision. Your bowling shoes must be lightweight and fit properly so that you can tell right away if your stance is off. If your foot happens to be positioned improperly, it can ruin the chance for a strike.

Bowling shoes today are much more fashionable than in times past. They look more like sneakers. Of course you can still buy the more traditional appearing shoe. In fact, bowling shoes come in a wide variety of styles and colors as it isn't the outward appearance of the shoe, but rather the sole which plays an important part in the game of bowling.

Bowling shoes must be cared for properly and never worn outside of the bowling alley and certainly never worn on the street. You can buy bowling shoes at a major sporting good store or through your local bowling center. You can actually shop online for bowling shoes too. That way you can get an idea of what is available and the price range. But it is always best to try them on before you buy. You can't really tell how well they are going to feel and fit until they are on your feet. And since bowling shoes are vitally important to your ability to be able to bowl with precision, you want to take the effort to get the best shoes possible. <bio>Anne Morris provides articles on http://www.morebowling.com.
All businesses that outperform their competitors have two key characteristics in common: a highly-energized workforce, plus hordes of delighted customers that keep coming back. Two nice things to have - but of course everyone knows the reason so few businesses enjoy a clear competitive advantage is precisely because these two things are so difficult to achieve. But wait. If it's really as difficult as all that, shouldn't those few businesses that manage to pull it off be absolutely exhausted by the effort? When you take a close look (as I have) at those rare businesses that consistently achieve both objectives - flashpoint businesses, as I refer to them - what you invariably see is just the opposite. Employees at all levels seem perpetually fired up, as if every day they're engaged in some kind of fun group activity. Is there some big secret about "energized workers" and "delighted customers" that these flashpoint businesses understand, and everyone else seems to have somehow missed?

There most certainly is. And it has to do with what most people consider the basic difference between "work" and "play". The first step on a shortcut to competitive advantage is to understand the specific elements that make play so much more satisfying than work.

Play Element 1: Challenge Achieving better bowling scores would be so much easier if the bowling pins were closer. On the other hand, who would pay to go to a bowling alley where anyone could knock down all the pins every time with ease? Knocking them all down over and over again would quickly begin to feel like the kind of repetitive, pointless activity most bowlers experience at their jobs, and go bowling precisely to get away from. To be fun, it has to be a real challenge=97that's key.

In most workplaces, there is no one single well-defined "mission" that takes precedence over everything else. Instead, there are all kinds of tasks and objectives and deadlines that often make workers feel they're being pulled in a dozen directions at once. For many, the only real challenge on the job is resisting the temptation to quit.

Contrast this with flashpoint businesses, where the one crystal-clear overriding mission is to draw business away from competitors by attempting to delight every customer every time. In these businesses, the reason it looks like workers are having fun is because in many ways their work feels like a game with a single, challenging, shared objective.

Shortcut to Competitive Advantage, Part One: Challenge everyone in your business to think of -outperforming the competition through superior customer care" as the primary objective that overrides all others at all times.

Play Element 2: Rules Every play activity has it own elaborate set of rules. In a new game, even before play begins, all the rules are carefully spelled out. These rules add to the challenge, and keep the game fair for all.

In the work setting, the rules are often vague and unclear. They may even seem to shift and change from time to time, based on different situations as they arise. Workers often feel reluctant to take initiatives, unsure if doing so will later earn them praise (for "thinking outside the box") or rebukes (for "breaking the rules"). They tend to adopt a play-it-safe approach.

By comparison, most flashpoint businesses spell out their values and their priorities=97the rules=97over and over again. "Your goal is to delight the customer, but not by doing anything that harms the organization in any way." "We want to pull business away from our competitors, but never in an unlawful or underhanded way."

Shortcut to Competitive Advantage, Part Two: Ensure that your workers understand how the game is to be played=97how, for example, you will be giving them opportunities to come up with their own ideas for enhancing the customer experience. Clarify what constitutes a "foul" or a violation of the rules.

Play Element 3: Scoring In play activities of every kind, there exists some sort of scoring mechanism that lets the players know immediately how well they're doing. This immediacy is critical. How popular would bowling be if the pins were in the dark, and players never found out how well they played until their scores arrived in the mail weeks later?

This is what it feels like for most workers on the job. They don't find out how well they're doing until the "quarterly reports" come out, or until their annual performance evaluation meeting.

Things are different in flashpoint businesses. There, spontaneous positive feedback from happy customers becomes the number-one scoring mechanism. At the same time it also serves as the number-one employee motivator, the basis for endless internal celebration and recognition.

Shortcut to Competitive Advantage, Part Three: Harvest immediate positive customer feedback by every means at your disposal, (especially informal face-to-face conversation), and direct as much of this feedback as possible to your workers.

Play Element 4: Satisfaction Bowlers know before every game that they won't succeed in knocking down every pin every time. Players in every kind of game know they'll never achieve a perfect score=97but this does nothing to diminish their attempts to do so. And when their score tells them their performance has moved closer to the unachievable goal, their feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment is profound. There's shouting and high-fiveing and every kind of exuberant victory dance imaginable.

Flashpoint businesses also know they won't succeed in delighting every customer every time. But when the feedback indicates they've moved closer to that unattainable objective, the same kind of cheering and celebration erupts. It's something that's almost never experienced in the majority of workplaces, and it's something that's almost routine in flashpoint businesses. They've once gain beat the opposing team, and once again the dance of victory unites all of them in their shared accomplishment=97and in their shared determination to play the game again, and strive together to win another round.

Shortcut to Competitive Advantage, Part Four: Create a culture of celebration that maximizes workers' sense of accomplishment with every "rave review" from delighted customers. This is the motivational fuel that quickly gains the most powerful competitive edge in any business=97and helps sustain it over the long term.

Customer-focus consultant Paul Levesque's latest book is Customer Service From The Inside Out Made Easy (Entrepreneur Press, 2006).

Copyright Paul Levesque. <bio>Paul Levesque studies businesses where motivated workers drive up customer satisfaction and positive feedback from customers drives up motivation.
When it comes to a sport that provides lots of family fun, few can match a quick trip to a local bowling alley. Although it might take years to reach "pro" status, almost anyone of any age can play this game. The game can be altered for young children and it is one even teens tend to enjoy, as well.

There are plenty of reasons why a family trip to a bowling alley can be a great idea. They include:

* Bonding. If the idea is to find an activity everyone can enjoy and do together, this beats the television hands down. A quick game at a local bowling alley provides plenty of opportunity for family time that happens to equal fun time, too. Unlike watching television or movies, this particular activity provides lots of opportunity for talking, bonding and respect building.

* Affordable. Bowling is one of those sports that can be very cost effective. Those on a budget can take advantage of lower-priced day trips and rentals of balls and shoes. Families that really get into the action can splurge and buy their own equipment. This can really be a shoestring operation if a family wants or needs it to be.

* Weather isn't a concern. Some other family sports might require ideal weather conditions to enjoy. Rainy days, snowy days and even really, really hot days have no impact on this family activity.

* Self-esteem building. Bowling can actually be a pretty big self-esteem builder. As children and families get better at the game, the improvements will be evident. As long as parents don't put too much pressure on the score and work to make a trip to the bowling alley fun, the confidence booster can be fantastic. It also provides parents an opportunity to teach youngsters to be good sports.

Going to the bowling alley with young children might take a little patience, but there are some things parents can do to help ensure the venture is a great one. These include:

* Exercise patience. Whether it's teenagers or younger children going to the bowling alley, it is very important to remember the game is just that. Children will likely need some good instruction and they might not be all that great starting out. Remember, you are all there to have fun, not bowl a perfect 300.

* Make it a personal competition. Rather than make it a game against each other, try bowling to beat your own personal scores. This can help give kids the leeway they need to learn and take the pressure off.

* Pick the right equipment. Make sure the shoes fit right and the balls aren't too heavy or too light. If these things are in place, the game is a whole lot more fun. Consider using gutter bumpers for really small bowlers. Don't forget to forego them as soon as they are ready. This in itself can be a great confidence builder.

A trip to a bowling alley can provide all the right ingredients for a great family outing. Generally quite affordable and typically very enjoyable, this particular sport is one that can be enjoyed by almost anyone. <bio>Get all the latest in bowling know how from the one and only true source at http://www.bowlingquestions.com

Be sure to check our our bowling alley page. </bio>

The sweep and the reverse sweep are two batting shots which are not commonly used, especially the reverse sweep which is rarely used. However both shots can be used in certain batting situations and are an effective way to score runs and keep the score board ticking over.

There is a high element of risk with the sweep shot, so good judgement and excellent timing is essential. Avoid playing the sweep and reverse sweep early on in your innings especially to straight deliveries, as it is not a good idea to play it until you have your eye in and know how the pitch is playing and what the bowler is doing. As for example, if the ball stayed low it would be quite easy to misjudge and get out LBW or bowled which you definitely want to avoid, so be patient and play yourself in first.

The sweep and reverse sweep are both cross batted shots and should ideally be played to slow deliveries which are of a good length and not too full. To play the orthodox sweep shot, first wait for the ball to be released before making any movement -- DON'T PREMEDITATE THE SHOT!

Once you have determined that the ball is there to play the sweep shot to, move your front foot as far down the wicket towards the pitch of the ball as you can. As you are moving forward bend both knees simultaneously so that you whole body is low down, let your back knee touch the ground to act as an extra base of support. Try to stay balanced and relaxed. Bring the bat down from the off side and across the ball towards the leg side and aim to hit it either in front of or behind square leg. You can roll your wrists over the ball as you hit to help keep it on the ground. Aim to have your arms fully extended when you contact the ball.

To play the reverse sweep, get in to the same position as for the orthodox sweep, however this time, bring you bat down and across from leg side towards the off side, so you are aiming to hit the ball through the gully area. This shot requires very good coordination and timing as you have to twist the bat round so that the bat face faces the off side at the point of contact without altering your grip.

Common problems:

-Premeditating the shot- deciding to play the shot before the bowler has bowled the ball. Wait until the ball is released from the bowlers hand before deciding to play the shot.

-Playing the sweep too early in the innings before getting your eye in. Wait until you are set and know how the pitch is playing and what the bowler is doing before attempting the shot.

-Trying to hit the ball too hard. Good timing and technique is better and more effective as you need to reduce the risk as much as possible.

-Playing the shot to deliveries which are either too full or too short, so good judgement of length is required.

Remember that the sweep and reverse sweep are quite hard shots to master and carry quite a lot of risk, so make sure that if you intend to use them, practice the shots in the nets and in training to get a feel for the shot and so you know when to play it; so that when you come to use them you are confident and skilled enough to do so. <bio>Discover amazing cricket tips and tricks and learn how to play awesome cricket so that you can explode your cricket results and destroy your opposition!
The act of trying to knock over a series of pins by rolling a round object towards them may not be new, but this great activity is as challenging and engaging today as it was in the past. Archaeologists have found evidence of bowling-type games from as long as five thousand years ago. This makes bowling one of the oldest sports on record, dating all the way back to the civilization of the ancient Egyptians. Every time you pull on your bowling shoes and head for your favorite lane to try and hit a few strikes, you are participating in a ritual that has amused and challenged humans since the year 3200 BC.

Although the unique pedigree of bowling hardly sounds like a recipe for one of modern America's favorite family pastimes, the truth remains that the game is roughly ninety percent derived from ancient Egypt and ten percent derived from nineteenth century law dodgers. Add a splash of turn of the century technology, and you have the modern game of bowling.

>From what historians have been able to piece together, the basic game of bowling did not change very much between its inception at the dawn of human culture and the middle of the nineteenth century. At that time, the ancient game of ninepin bowling had caught on all over Europe and had made its way to the United States where it was a very popular sport in the underworld community and became a favorite target for gamblers. This led the government of the state of Connecticut to pass an 1841 law that prohibited owning a ninepin bowling alley. This was an attempt to fragment the gambling community by making it impossible for them to meet in the bowling alleys where they usually gathered.

To get around this law, the gamblers in the area simply changed the rules of the game. They added an extra pin to the bowling setup; thereby making their alleys into tenpin bowling alleys. The tenpin bowling alleys were technically legal to own and operate simply because they hadn't existed when Connecticut banned the game of ninepins. The game of tenpins proved to be more fun than its predecessor, and ten is the number of pins that we still play with today.

Once ten pins became the standard for the game, the only aspect of bowling that remained old fashioned by today's perspective was the ball. The first modern bowling ball was not introduced until 1905. Before that time, most bowling balls were made of a wood called "lignum vitae," which was prized both for its light weight and its durability. However, wooden bowling balls did not have as much spring or bounce as the materials we use today.

The first rubber bowling ball hit the market in 1905, and was immediately popular. By 1914 a new rubberized plastic compound was created specifically for use in bowling balls. This compound was known as Mineralite and its use transformed the game, enabling faster rolling speeds and greater precision. This created whole new styles of bowling techniques, many of which are still in use today by both top bowlers and by young children who are just starting out.
