You see your doctor every six months for a checkup. During this time, he checks your cholesterol to see how your levels are looking. If your levels are high, he may suggest some things you can do to help lower your cholesterol, and then make an appointment to check your levels again in six months. But what if you want to check your cholesterol more often? Is there a way to keep closer tabs on your cholesterol levels than just seeing your doctor every six months?

There are several ways to test your cholesterol levels at home. Your local pharmacy or drugstore probably stocks or can order a wide variety of these home cholesterol kits. Some of these kits are similar to a blood glucose meter while others use a litmus type test.

One of the least expensive of these home cholesterol tests allows you to place a drop of blood on a chemically treated pad. After a short period of time, you compare the resulting color on the chemical pad with a color chart which gives you a general idea of your cholesterol level. These tests are inexpensive and are ideal for those who just want to get a general idea of how their cholesterol levels are looking.

For those who want more specific results, there are also cholesterol meters available for sale. These cholesterol testers work much like a blood glucose monitor and give you a more precise reading than the litmus-type tests. To use these testers, you place a drop of blood on a test strip which is inserted into the cholesterol meter. You are then given a specific number that represents your total cholesterol level.

If you plan to check your cholesterol at home, there are some important factors to keep in mind. First, your cholesterol will not change drastically from day-to-day. Therefore, there is no reason to check your cholesterol every day. It will take at least one week for any diet or exercise changes to make a difference in your cholesterol level. It is also important to test your cholesterol at the same time each day. The best time to check your cholesterol level is in the morning before breakfast.

Also, an at-home cholesterol check will only give you a total cholesterol level. There are no home tests yet that will discover both an HDL and LDL cholesterol level. In fact, the only way to find out your LDL or bad cholesterol level is to have your doctor conduct a fasting blood cholesterol test. While doctors sometimes conduct a nonfasting cholesterol test, only the total and HDL levels of these tests will be accurate.

If you want to keep a closer eye on your cholesterol level that just seeing your doctor every so often, there are various cholesterol tests and testers to choose from. Depending on how much money you want to spend on a tester you can get a general idea of how high your cholesterol is or you can get a pinpointed number. <bio>Get the latest in cholesterol levels know how from the only true source at http://www.lowercholesterollog.com.

Check out our cholesterol levels pages. </bio>

The great debate continues. For decades we've been hearing all about the evils of cholesterol. In recent years, we were told that maybe cholesterol wasn't so bad after all. Now it seems that this mysterious substance falls on both sides of the fence. That's why you need to understand the differences between good cholesterol and bad cholesterol.

It's important to realize that there is no cholesterol free diet. All people have cholesterol in their bodies, as it is a natural and important part of our physiology. Those with low cholesterol can suffer from thin blood or bleeding disorders. A healthy supply of cholesterol can be good for your body, and will keep you healthy in the future. For this reason, you must learn as much as you can about good and bad cholesterol.

Bad Cholesterol Inside the small particles that make up cholesterol, there are additional particles called molecules. These smaller particles are also known as carrier molecules. The carrier particles are made up of proteins that are found in the foods that you eat, mostly nuts and meat. These carrier particles of won't dissolve because they are attached to cholesterol, which is a type of fat. The bad cholesterol being carried by the proteins are known as lipoproteins. High levels of bad cholesterol will make your blood thicker and cause it to move more slowly. These can also be associated with arteriosclerosis.

Good Cholesterol The particles in your blood aid in the digestion and the transport of cholesterol through your body. These andquot;good carriersandquot; and the good cholesterol are known as apportions. If you have a higher level of naturally produced and processed cholesterol, you are known to have high-density lipoprotein. These higher levels of good cholesterols will help the blood flow easily through your body.

The cholesterol in your blood will fluctuate over time. They won't always be high, and won't always be low. It is possible to control the levels of bad cholesterol in your body by cutting back on certain fatty foods, and trying to limit your stress levels. Have your cholesterol checked every year. If you are treated for high cholesterol, be sure to exercise regularly and take your medications as prescribed. <bio>Robert Miller writes articles for several online magazines, especially http://tybul.com and http://bazox.com </bio>

Here are some simple but accurate, quick to digest facts about the subject of low cholesterol.

We have probably been enlightened by a thousand books and articles regarding the harmful effects of a high cholesterol level and how to lower it down to a healthy range. But is a low cholesterol level as undesirable as a high cholesterol level?

Experts believe that very low cholesterol levels may be symptoms of hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid gland, liver disease, malabsorption, malnutrition, hypocholesterolemia, and insufficient absorption of the nutrients from the intestines.

Extremely low cholesterol levels which are considered abnormal are known as hypocholesterolemia. There is an ongoing study that links this particular abnormality to tuberculosis. The study aims to consider the prospect of using cholesterol as a means for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis.

Dutch experts recently conducted studies to gather more information as to whether or not low total blood cholesterol levels can raise the risk of depression in men. They have observed that men with low cholesterol levels display depressive symptoms of anger and hostility in contrast to the men with cholesterol levels within the normal range. Other recent studies have discovered that aside from the risk of depression, people with very low cholesterol levels are prone to anxiety, suicide, and hemorrhagic stroke. These studies further state that people with cholesterol level under 180mg/dL are two times more at risk to developing hemorrhagic stroke compared to those with levels at 230 mg/dL.

Research points out that the metabolism of serotonin, a substance that regulates a person's mood, may be influenced by cholesterol. As the study found out, the levels of serotonin is decreased in men having low cholesterol levels.

Some doctors believe though that getting your LDL way below the normal level is better. The reason why LDL should be the main focus in cholesterol lowering is that this particular lipid acts as the bad guy. They are the ones that accumulate on the walls of the blood vessels, forming a plaque over time which results in blockage of blood flow. Lowering your total blood cholesterol shouldn't be way beyond the normal level, as experts say, because your total cholesterol is not only made up of the bad (LDL) cholesterol, but the good (HDL) cholesterol as well.

So it's not a question of how low you should go. Checking your HDL level should be done as well. Increasing it will make it more effective in counteracting your bad cholesterol. <bio>The article you have just read is just one of several informative articles on the subject of cholesterol that you can find here: http://www.low-cholsterol-recipeonline.com </bio>

The need to know and understand the healthy levels of cholesterol arises because it has a dominant and prominent role to play in the maintenance of your proper health. The cholesterol is a part of blood flow, and yet it has an independent status. It does not mix with the blood. It is capable of controlling the blood flow.

The defined levels of cholesterol, in terms of medical science, are: Desirable level, Tolerable (border line high risk cases) level and High risk levels. Well, here is the defined classification of these levels.

Desirable Level Of Cholesterol: Less than 200 mg/dL Borderline High Risk Level Of Cholesterol: 200 to 239 mg/dL High risk Level Of Cholesterol: 240 mg/dL and more

Now let's have a close look at each of these cholesterol levels one by one.

When your cholesterol is at the desirable level you don't have much to worry about heart diseases. But, don't think that you have the free license to eat what you want. You need to be still cautious about your food habits. The level can change any time. And once it changes, the fear element will enter your frame of mind. So, continue to eat low saturated fat foods, plenty of fruits of vegetables and make exercise a part of your daily schedule. It is also desirable to have cholesterol levels measured once in a year. Take this as the thumb rule, if you are a man of over 45 and a woman of over the age of 55.

If you find yourself in the borderline high risk level of cholesterol, you need to be vigilant. Mostly 30 to 40% of the cholesterol affected people fall under this group. You need to take immediate steps to bring down this line level of cholesterol to the desired level. It is not that you have the heart risk straightaway at this stage. Nevertheless, proper medical examination and the proper analysis of the results obtained by your physician are necessary at this stage. Don't make your own calculations. Take the expert advice. Continue with the diet control and the excellent exercise schedule, without fault.

As for the third category of high risk zone, it does not require any elaboration and further explanation. You are in the "war-zone." Any miscalculation or misadventure could be fatal. The chances of stroke are high and real. Your physician may ask you to undergo several tests to decide whether you have any other complications, apart from high cholesterol level.

When you are a cholesterol candidate in the second and third category, apart from what medications your physician gives you, total life style changes are necessary. Medicines by themselves will not give you a permanent cure, unless you adopt some healthy lifestyle changes. <bio>http://www.urcholesterol.com/ and Cholesterol Levels provides detailed information on cholesterol, cholesterol levels, cholesterol foods and more. </bio>

Blood cholesterol testing is usually performed with the help of health specialists. However, with various home medical supplies available on the market, you can now monitor your cholesterol levels in the cozy ambiance of your house with the aid of a home cholesterol and blood monitoring test kit. But what are the benefits of having a cholesterol test kit at home?

Why use a home test kit?

One great benefit of a cholesterol test kit is that you are able to identify whether you need to make changes in your lifestyle to reduce your cholesterol. It has been identified that the risk of heart attack is higher when your blood cholesterol is above normal. As a result, it is imperative that people maintain low cholesterol levels to reduce this risk. Using home medical kits to monitor your heart health regularly is a practical way to determine if your cholesterol level is normal.

Preferably, you should have your cholesterol examined at least every 3 to 5 years. Home tests can be regularly used to keep a check for any sign of increase in cholesterol when it may not be easily noticeable. A visit to the doctor just to check your cholesterol level may be time-consuming. And because of this a home cholesterol test kit can be a more efficient approach to getting peace of mind.

The application of cholesterol test kit for home use has answered the consumers' wish to have a cheap option to monitor cholesterol on a regular basis without visiting their doctor. Precise and simple to use, they can be an early indication of potential problems.

Though heart disease and high blood are deemed as the most common threats to people, early prevention and detection of symptoms through home cholesterol test kits can help win the campaign. But, even if you see no clear symptoms of high cholesterol, being conscious on your eating habits and keeping an eye on your overall health is essential for long term health. <bio>Kathryn Whittaker has an interest in Health related subjects.
Ordinary, we know cholesterol mostly in negative aspect. In fact, we actually need cholesterol to make bile salts, hormones and vitamin D. Cholesterol is generally created by liver. Cholesterol will stick to the artery walls if you have too high level of cholesterol in the blood. Mainly, there are 2 types of cholesterol: low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

HDL or good Cholesterol

In our blood, there are allow one-fourth to one-third of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).High levels of HDL cholesterol seem to protect against heart attack. On other hand, low levels of HDL cholesterol (less than 40 mg/dL) increase the risk of heart disease. There is some proof that the HDL cholesterol molecules clean up the blood vessels walls, and cleans out excess cholesterol and is being transported back to the liver for further processing.

LDL or bad Cholesterol

High amounts of the bad LDL cholesterol will deposit cholesterol on the blood vessels walls forming plaques. More and more plaques will narrow the blood vessels and may finally block blood flow. As a result LDL cholesterol is considered the bad cholesterol. Importantly, saturated fats and trans fatty acids are factors that raise blood cholesterol. Unsaturated fats which found in nuts and fish can lower the LDL cholesterol level. In addition, soluble fiber found in fruits, oats, barley and legumes can also lower LDL cholesterol.

Increasing the GOOD cholesterol

Regular aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging or bike riding, which boost up your heart rate for 20 to 30 minutes at a time, may be the most useful way to enhance HDL levels. The duration of exercise, evidently, is rather important than the intensity of exercise increasing HDL cholesterol. Obesity also consequences in increased LDL cholesterol and also reduces HDL cholesterol. If you have excess weight, you should reduce your weight to increase your HDL levels.

If you smoke, giving up tobacco will cause in an increase in HDL levels. Drink alcohol, other factor, can significantly increase HDL levels. More than one or two drinks per day can speed up health problems including heart failure and there are individuals who will, probably develop such problems even when limiting their alcohol intake to one or two drinks per day.

Trans fatty acids are currently present in many foods which label partially hydrogenated vegetable oils so cutting trans fat from the diet is not easy. Trans fatty acids not only increase LDL cholesterol levels, but also reduce HDL cholesterol levels. Removing them from your food will significantly in increasing HDL level. On other hand, increase the monounsaturated fats such as canola oil, avocado oil, or olive oil and in the fats found in peanut butter in your diet can increase HDL cholesterol levels without increasing the total cholesterol.

You should eat more soluble fiber because it both reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol. Soluble fibers are found in oats, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. Other dietary means to increasing HDL is cranberry juice which has been shown to increase HDL levels. Fish and other foods containing omega-3 fatty acids can also increase HDL levels.<bio>Health Care</bio>

Cholesterol is not good for health. Or so, we have been told. But that may not be the whole truth. If you thought that having as low cholesterol as possible is the way to go, the impression needs to be corrected. Studies have proved that low cholesterol may also be a bad news in many cases.

A few researches have found some association of cancer with low cholesterol. However, it does not mean that low cholesterol is somehow instrumental in causing cancer. Prior to developing cancer symptoms the patient starts feeling a dip in his appetite, which causes his cholesterol level to sink.

This very talked-about study started by testing blood cholesterol levels in the patients. It was found that among the cancer patients the blood cholesterol level starting going down eight years before the person died of cancer.

There was another study, this time from Russia, which showed those people who had low cholesterol level were more inclined to drink heavily and grow thinner over the time than those who had normal cholesterol levels. Besides, the low cholesterol people were found to be less educated though this fact doesn't seem to have a medical angle but the experts are yet to find how these two things are related.

Though there is no evidence to show that low cholesterol level makes your life shorter. Yet, if you feel you have low level of cholesterol in your blood, visit a doctor forthwith and have yourself examined. Low cholesterol levels may be an early indication of developing cancer, and, as we all know, if detected early, cancer can be effectively treated.

So, you need not worry yourself too much about having low cholesterol, but must keep having regular checks-up. Medical experts are yet to figure out as to what all complications can be caused due to low cholesterol. Whether it is an indication of a disease or a problem itself, is yet to be known. The best way is to keep oneself informed about the goings on in one's body. So, make regular appointments with your physician and do keep them. If work leaves you with less time, get a cholesterol test kit to check the cholesterol level at home. And the moment you see any alarming fluctuations, let your doctor know immediately. <bio>The author writes about a number of different topics.
Total cholesterol level can be determined through a simple blood test, and in fact, an at-home test kit is available and can be just as accurate as the standard tests procured in a doctor's office. So how do you know if you're at risk for heart disease or blood clots from cholesterol? The first step is to know your 'number'. In other words, have your cholesterol level checked.

240 mg/dL and over -- People with cholesterol levels over 240mg/dL are at increased risk for heart attack and stroke. If your cholesterol level is 240 mg/dL or greater, consult your doctor and follow his/her advice on lowering that level.

200--239 mg/dL -- Consult your doctor. Your doctor will be best equipped to interpret the results and test further for LDL andHDL levels.

Less than 200 mg/dL -- This is where your cholesterol level should be. Even so, to ensure that you have the right balance -- more HDL than LDL cholesterol -- you should follow the Guidelines for Healthy Living.

Although these levels are important guidelines, they do not give the whole picture -- they are really just rough guidelines. The LDL cholesterol level is a more important indicator of overall cardiovascular health, but having your cholesterol level checked will not necessarily give you your LDL cholesterol number.

LDL Levels

Less then 130 is optimal; 130-159 is borderline, increasing your risk for heart disease; 160 or greater puts you at greater risk for heart disease.

HDL Levels

Less then 40 increases your risk for heart disease; 60 or greater decreases your risk.

Traditional cholesterol testing is a good indicator for assessing heart disease and stroke risk; however, there are many variables that can not be controlled in this traditional testing, such as genes, race, age and past medical history. A person may appear 'heart healthy', at a good weight, fit, and eating a balanced diet, and still have unacceptable cholesterol levels. On the other hand, another person may have acceptable cholesterol levels -- even acceptable HDL cholesterol levels -- and still be at risk for heart disease. There is still much research to be done on cholesterol and our bodies' manufacture and control of cholesterol levels.

Fortunately, there is another test available, rather than the traditional cholesterol testing, which provides a more in-depth study of cholesterol levels. This is the VAP, or Verticle Auto Profile. This test not only indicates the HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, but also provides an analysis of the many subclasses of cholesterol and it offers a more comprehensive indication of who may be at an increased risk of heart disease. In fact, statistics show that the VAP has a 90% detection rate for persons at risk for heart disease, whereas traditional cholesterol testing may miss up to 60% of the patients at risk! Please see the VAP website for more information on the importance of this test, especially for anyone at risk for heart disease, and for information on taking the VAP. <bio>Elizabeth McNally is a certified RN and has worked in heath care for the past 30 years.
Blood cholesterol is one of the most important constituents of the blood/body. It has varied bodily functions, and it builds up healthy cells. It is an essential constituent of the cell wall (membrane), and if the level of blood cholesterol falls below normal, the walls of the red blood cells (RBC) are likely to rupture, thus causing a severe fall in haemoglobin (Hb).

Cholesterol mainly comes from the diet, i.e. from butter, ghee (saturated fat), egg-yolk, non-vegetarian food. Sea food/fish contains a low content of saturated fat. However, polyunsaturated fats like safflower, corn, sunflower, soybean, and cotton seed oils, etc do not give rise to serum cholesterol levels in the blood. These are recommended both for prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol.

Cholesterol is also synthesized/made in the body. It has got limited excretion. Some is passed in faeces/bile, but is mostly retained in the body. The level of blood cholesterol rises as soon as the person eats.

The normal blood cholesterol level should be between 150-199 mg/ dl, and if it is more than 240 mg/ dl, it is considered a high level of blood cholesterol. Patients having a blood cholesterol level between 200-239 mg/ dl are borderline cases. Both in high and borderline cases, repeated check-ups of blood cholesterol are required.

However, those with a normal level of blood cholesterol must get their blood it checked-up, at least every five years, especially after the age of 40. In general, all persons above the age of 20 must get their blood tested to exclude high levels of cholesterol.

In children above 2 years of age, blood may be tested for cholesterol levels in case they have a family history of high blood .cholesterol/ coronary artery disease / stroke.

Blood cholesterol level may increase when a woman is on oral contraceptives or is pregnant. The level tends to decrease after the pregnancy is over, or after oral contraceptives are stopped. It may take even 5-6 months to come to normal levels. Screening for high blood cholesterol must be carried out through medical camps/house-to-house surveys to locate patients suffering from this malady, as they require immediate treatment. Significant importance is now being given to the levels of cholesterol among the general population. It is very important to know the level of blood cholesterol in a person at an early age

Blood cholesterol can be tested at any biochemical laboratory, after recommendation from the physician. One must talk to one's physician about the testing of blood cholesterol. The cholesterol level should be checked while fasting in the morning, and if a person takes alcohol, he should avoid it for at least 48 hours before the test. Above all, .the test must be carried out by an experienced biochemist. If the blood cholesterol level is high, it is advisable that a lipidogram be done.

High levels of blood cholesterol are dangerous for the body. They cause narrowing, and even blockage of the coronary arteries (blood vessels supplying the heart) and blood vessels supplying the brain, leading to heart attacks and strokes (paralysis, etc.) respectively. The chances of developing these diseases become higher if one has, in addition, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. The risk also increases if one has a family history of high blood cholesterol/heart attack. The danger is also greater in persons who are addicted to heavy smoking/tobacco chewing, and have sedentary habits. In females the risk is much more after menopause.

High levels of cholesterol may lead to gallstones, and may even be responsible for cancers. <bio>Author sites: http://www.herbalremedieslk.com , http://self-health-tips.blogspot.com , http://www.e-self-help.com </bio>

You've heard all about the dangers of high cholesterol. Perhaps your doctor has warned you to watch your own cholesterol levels. Then again, you may have also heard that cholesterol is a naturally occurring element of the human body.

There are many misconceptions about cholesterol, so it's important to understand the facts.

Cholesterol is a substance that is found in your blood stream. Each and every one of us has cholesterol in our blood. Without cholesterol, our blood would be thin and our bodies would not function normally. Cholesterol is used to produce additional cells in the body, and has many reproducing uses. This type of cholesterol is considered to be andquot;goodandquot; cholesterol.

The other cholesterol is considered andquot;badandquot; cholesterol. This is the cholesterol your doctor warned you about: the one that invades your body through foods like butter and red meat. People with high cholesterol have thicker, fattier blood and are at risk of serious health problems including heart disease and blood clots.

If blood test results have shown that you suffer from high cholesterol, you need to make immediate changes to your diet and lifestyle. People with a high daily cholesterol intake typically include many fatty foods in their diets. The more fats you ingest, the more will stay in your bloodstream. Cutting cholesterol can add years to your life.

Cutting cholesterol begins with education. Know which foods are healthy, and avoid those that are not. Read ingredient labels in the grocery store. You'll likely be surprised by what you learn. For example, most processed peanut butters are high in cholesterol. Fatty meats and butter carry a load of cholesterol as well. Choose your foods wisely and pay attention to everything you eat. Cutting cholesterol can be easy to do, and you'll be amazed at how quickly the amounts can add up, even at an average mealtime.

Daily exercise is another simple and effective means of cutting cholesterol. Take a brisk walk every day. Ride your bike to work. Play with the kids. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. These are all simple yet very effective ways of adding exercise to your daily routine, and cutting cholesterol from your system. Being active helps your body to digest foods more effectively, and it helps to lower your stress levels. These, in turn, help to lower cholesterol levels.

If you are concerned about cholesterol, take the time to educate yourself before you begin to face serious health problems. Learn how to cut your cholesterol, before it cuts into your lifespan. <bio>Barbara Smith contributes to several Internet magazines, such as http://bazol.com and http://mifot.com </bio>

Many of us know what cholesterol and heart disease are. What most of us don't know is that there are arguments whether cholesterol is the main cause of heart disease. Some experts say that cholesterol is one of the main cause of heart disease while there are others who think otherwise.

Experts from the Framingham Heart Study have determined that high blood cholesterol is one of the factors for a coronary heart disease or CHD. The result of their study showed that the ones who have a higher cholesterol level is the most likely he will have a coronary heart disease or CHD. Coronary heart disease is unusual at low cholesterol levels. A connection between high blood cholesterol and heart disease was also confirmed by another group of experts. Their studies showed that lowering the total LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels drastically reduces coronary heart disease. Recently, a series of trials of cholesterol using statin drugs showed that lowering the total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol greatly reduces the chance of experiencing a heart attack, angioplasty (a bypass that requires surgery) and dying of coronary heart disease-related causes.

What are the risk factors that increases the risk of developing heart disease? The risk factors are the condition that one has. Even though some risk factors can be modified some risk factor can not be changed. All in all, the more risk factor that you have the more chances you will be experiencing a heart disease. Here are some of the risk factor that can not be modified:

* Age (55 and above for female while 45 and above for male) * Family history (parents or sibling who died of a heart disease at the age stated above)

Here are some known risk factors that one can change:

* High total cholesterol and high LDL (bad) cholesterol * Low HDL (good) cholesterol * Smoking * High blood pressure * Diabetes ( the risk of developing a heart disease is high if you are diabetic) * Physical inactivity * Obesity or overweight

It is advisable to go to a physician if you are not sure if you have a high blood cholesterol.

Although some expert agree that the high blood cholesterol and heart disease is somewhat connected; there are also a few expert who tend to disagree that too much animal fat or high cholesterol and heart disease go together. They argued that there is no such thing as "bad" or "good" cholesterol. They believe that mental stress, physical activity and change of body weight may influence the level of the blood cholesterol and that a high blood cholesterol is not dangerous but only reflects an unhealthy condition. There lots of factors that some experts disagree with each other. Whatever causes of high cholesterol and heart disease are. The only sure thing is... to live a healthy life. <bio>T J Madigan has been established in online business since 1998 and is director of a number of successful online projects one of which is http://www.articles.net.au your best source for FREE articles and information. </bio>

Cholesterol is a typed of fat that is needed by and found in all of the cells in your body. It functions to protect nerves, produce some hormones, and manufacture cell tissues.

Your liver produces all the cholesterol you need to perform these vital functions. Therefore, the cholesterol which you obtain from the foods you consume is extra and excess cholesterol. Since the body does not require and therefore does not use this extra cholesterol, it accumulates on the walls of your arteries. These extra cholesterol deposits harden into a plaque. As a result, the artery passages become narrow and there is less space for the blood and oxygen to move to your heart. This causes a condition called arteriosclerosis.

Sometimes, the cholesterol build-up blocks an artery. If the blocked artery supplies blood to your brain, you are at risk for a stroke. If an artery supplying blood to your heart is blocked, you may suffer a heart attack.

However, there are two types of cholesterol: LDL or low-density level cholesterol and HDL or high-density cholesterol. The LDL is bad cholesterol but the HDL is beneficial to you.

All cholesterol is transported through the blood in particles called lipoproteins. The outside of the package is composed of protein and the cholesterol is inside.

The LDL lipoproteins are detrimental to your health because they deliver cholesterol to your body. The HDL lipoproteins are beneficial to you however, as they take the cholesterol away from the bloodstream and carry it to the liver. Therefore, your total cholesterol count reflects a balance between HDL and LDL.

Since high cholesterol levels in the blood do not generate any symptoms, it is important for people to have their cholesterol levels checked. Men Less than 35 years old and women under 45 should be tested every give years. Once the target ages have been reached, testing should be done annually along with a routine physical.

However, if your levels are high, or if you have other risk factors for heart disease you may require more frequent tests.

All testing should be done when the person is healthy. A serious illness or accident will cause cholesterol levels to drop while pregnancy will result in high levels. Doctors recommend that people wait at least six weeks after these events before being tested.

Certain medications such as anabolic steroids, beta-blockers, and epinephrine will cause cholesterol levels to increase. The use of oral contraceptives and Vitamin D also raise levels. Be sure to inform your doctor if you are taking any of these.

An ideal overall cholesterol level is less than 200. Results of 200 to 239 place one in the borderline high group while over 240 places you at risk for heart problems.

LDL should ideally be below 100. However 100 to 129 is acceptable. Borderline high is 130 to 159 and if you are over 160 you are at risk for heart disease.

Conversely, HDL should be high. If below 40, again you are at risk. Sixty or higher greatly lessens the risk factor.

Since heart disease is America's leading cause of death and high blood cholesterol, occurring in 17% of our population, is a major risk factor, it is to your benefit to monitor your cholesterol levels.<bio>8th Step in Drug and Alcohol RecoveryAddiction, Recovery and Making Amends</bio>

Not all cholesterol is created equal. Does this seem like a strange statement? While it may seem strange, it is true. Not all types of cholesterol are the same. Your body creates some cholesterol; you add some to your body by the foods you eat. Also, medical experts consider some cholesterol bad while they think that you also have good cholesterol. What, good cholesterol? With all the negative publicity we hear each day about cholesterol, how can you believe that any form of this substance is good?

To understand how expert can call one cholesterol good, you must first understand the role of cholesterol in the body. Since the body naturally produces this substance, it makes sense the body needs this substance to survive. Cholesterol's main role in the body is to preserve and build cell wall membranes. Cholesterol also aids in digesting fat soluble vitamins and is important in producing hormones.

So, as you see, cholesterol is a substance the body needs for it to be healthy. Cholesterol becomes bad when there is a surplus of it in our systems either because our body produces too much of the substance or when we take in too much cholesterol though the foods we eat. This excess cholesterol can build up in the blood vessels, clogging arteries and causing heart disease and heart attack.

This is the point where doctors begin to distinguish between good and bad cholesterol. Medical researchers refer to good cholesterol as high density lipoprotein or HDL cholesterol, while they term bad cholesterol as low-density lipoprotein or LDL cholesterol. You can also call HDL cholesterol good cholesterol, because the medical practitioners believe that your bodily processes work to transport this cholesterol out of the body. This is good because it does not stick around to plug up your arteries. Meanwhile, it is LDL cholesterol that builds up in the arteries and causes heart disease.

Therefore, if you want to avoid heart disease, your goal should be to raise your good cholesterol levels and lower the bad cholesterol levels. What, then, is the ideal good cholesterol level? Doctors want your good cholesterol to be above 50 mg/DL. Any reading between 35 and 50 mg/DL they consider acceptable while they look at those below 35 mg/DL to be too low.

Now, what can you do if you find your good cholesterol level is too low? What are the best ways to raise it? Here are a few things to try. First, lose some weight. If you are overweight, this change can drastically help improve cholesterol levels. Join a weight loss program to help you reduce your weight. Exercise can also help to raise your HDL level. If you smoke, quitting can also help to raise levels of good cholesterol.

As you can see, all cholesterol is indeed not created equal. By increasing your good cholesterol, you can cut your risk of heart disease and stroke. Several lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and giving up smoking, can help improve your levels of this good cholesterol. <bio>Get the latest in HDL cholesterol know how from the only true source at http://www.lowercholesterollog.com.
Typically, when the word cholesterol is mentioned people automatically assume something bad but cholesterol can be both good and bad.

Because cholesterol can be both good and bad it's important to learn what it is and how it affects your health, as well as what you can do in regards to treatment if the need be. In a nutshell, there are two types of cholesterol - LDL and HDL.

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol is carried in the blood stream. HDL cholesterol is considered good because it protects our heart from strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. As a result, low levels of HDL increase the risk of heart attack. The optimal level of good cholesterol is about 40mg/dL.

On the other hand, bad cholesterol, also known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is considered bad because if present in excessive quantities has a tendency to clog in the arteries which increases the chances of heat attacks or other heart related diseases.

When excessive amounts are present in an individuals blood it has a tendency to build up on the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain and together, with other substances it forms form plaque. Plaque is a thick, hard deposit that clogs arteries which results in a condition known as atherosclerosis.

The optimal level of bad cholesterol is 200mg/dL or less. Higher amounts tend to increase the chance of heart problems due to an increased change of clogged arteries.

Another important factor regarding optimal cholesterol health is triglycerides. Triglycerides, which are a form of fat, are also produced by the body but they are also come certain types of food. The reason triglycerides are important is because individuals with high triglycerides tend to also have high total cholesterol levels - high LDL or bad cholesterol and low HDL or good cholesterol levels.

Because cholesterol levels change it's important to get them checked fairly regularly. Proper cholesterol levels are a major part of optimum health and so it's important to understand where you stand. Do you have too much of the bad, too little of the good, are both out of whack or ideally, are both good cholesterol and bad cholesterol in check.

Tip - For options in finding the best lender for you, check out the links below. <bio>Visit http://www.cholesterol-gateway.com or http://www.cholesterol-gateway.com/links.html or http://www.cholesterol-gateway.com/sitemap1.html for more information on cholesterol. </bio>

Seven out of 10 people over 45 have high cholesterol, so if you're looking for a diet for high cholesterol you're not alone. Cholesterol levels in the blood rise as we age, so if your cholesterol level is still within normal limits, averages are they won't be for long.

At first blush, looking for a diet for high cholesterol is easy, right? If you've been searching for a `nano-instant' you've heard the refrain =96 Eat a low-fat diet!

However, recent research has proven this statement to be out of date. It seems it's not the amount of fat you eat it's the type of fat that's important. In fact, in a recent eight year study done with 49,000 women, eating a low-fat diet did little or nothing to prevent heart disease, breast cancer, or colon cancer.

What mattered was the type of fat on the diet. It turns out it was saturated and Trans fats, that increased the risk for certain diseases, while good fats, (read monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) lower the risk. The key it seems is to substitute good fats for bad fats.

Cholesterol has been one of the most vilified and misconstrued elements of this century. Cholesterol is naturally present all through the body, including your brain, your nervous system, muscles, your skin, liver, intestines, and of course your heart.

Cholesterol is needed for the production of certain hormones including testosterone and estrogen, and is essential to the synthesis of vitamin D which is necessary for healthy bones as well as being utilized to repair the membranes around our cells. Cholesterol is very important for our wellbeing.

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance which is transported around the body in the blood attached to lipoproteins. But what is not commonly known is that the average person makes about 75% of blood cholesterol in his or her own liver, while only about 25% is absorbed from food. The biggest influence on your cholesterol levels (HDL and LDL) is the mix of fats in the diet.

Saturated fats raise total cholesterol levels and tend to boost both good HDL and bad LDL cholesterol. Trans fats however, tend to raise bad LDL and lower good HDL. But some fats are good because they can improve cholesterol levels. For instance, Omega-3 fats actually help to improve blood fats like cholesterol.

If you're worried about the type of the fat in foods you eat, you are wise to do so. Diet changes are usually the first step in lowering cholesterol before medicines are added. You can expect to lower your cholesterol numbers by as much as 20% with diet improvement.

There are several other things you can do to improve your cholesterol numbers. Quitting cigarettes and other forms of tobacco help to increase HDL levels (good cholesterol), and depress LDL levels (bad cholesterol). Increasing vitamin C intake (ascorbic acid) will also encourage the body to produce less cholesterol, particularly LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). And last but not least (you knew it was coming) exercise will also help lower your overall cholesterol level.

So if you're looking for a diet for high cholesterol, there are several which will help you improve the type of fats you're taking in and lowering your cholesterol. <bio>B.J.
A lot has been written in recent years about blood cholesterol levels. Not all that long ago, it was thought that eating foods high in cholesterol caused you have have high blood cholesterol levels, and this in turn could lead to heart disease, heart atacks, and other heart related problems. And because of these beliefs and fears, people were encouraged to eat foods super low in fat.

The problem with that philosophy and teaching is that it was a bit too generic and broad. There are actually types of fat that are good for you. In fact, these so-called "good fats" are essential for proper nutrition and health. There are also "bad fats" however, which can be a contributing factor to health and heart related problems.

Cholesterol levels in your blood now have a similar distinction. Where once it was believed that you need to have your total cholesterol levels below a certain number - such as 200mg - now it's becoming clear through scientific studies and research that this isn't always a good measuring stick. Instead, there is "good" and "bad" cholesterol. And those numbers are what's important, along with the ratio of one to another.

LDL cholesterol is considered the "bad" type, and that stands for low-density lipoprotein. Without going into a lot of medical and scientific terminology, let's suffice it to say that LDL cholesterol can have harmful reactions in the human body. In contrast, there's HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, which creates beneficial reactions in the human body.

If you find it difficult to remember which one is supposed to better and which isn't, think of LDL cholesterol as the one you want to keep low - use the L at the beginning as a reminder trigger - and HDL is the one you want to keep higher (H=Higher). The ratio between your LDL and HDL cholesterol levels is important too.

Now unfortunately testing is still a bit imprecise. In some cases, medical professionals will still do a general cholesterol test which gives you the overall levels. It's becoming more common though, to at least estimate the LDL to HDL cholesterol ratios, or total cholesterol to HDL levels, but both of these are estimates instead of actual measurements.

Some say that LDL levels should fall at or below 100mg, while newer recommendations are calling for less than 70mg. When total cholesterol to HDL is measured, it's said a 5:1 ratio or less is best.

Now you can get cholesterol from foods. Primary sources of cholesterol are from animal products such as eggs, peanuts, flax seeds, and beef. Some cholesterol can be found in plants as well, but it's usually a much smaller amount. Most people assume - and books even teach - that there is no cholesterol in plants at all. This is a misunderstanding however, because the American FDA does not require it to be on food labels if there is less than 2mg per serving.

Keep in mind though, that eating foods which contain cholesterol does not mean you'll automatically have cholesterol related health problems. Some of these problems can be caused by - or at least contributed to - by poor eating habits in general, poor exercise, and genetics.

Cholesterol levels can be hereditary. Like many health problems today, it's been found that some genetic backgrounds have much higher risks for certain health problems than others do. <bio>If you're concerned about keeping your cholesterol levels on a healthy track, you should consider trying herbal supplements designed specifically for this.
Cholesterol is a sterol lipid, a form of fat, found in the cell membranes of all body tissues of humans and animals. Most of it is synthesized internally in the liver, but a part of it comes directly from animal-derived foods (meats, eggs and dairy products) present in the diet.

Cholesterol is an essential ingredient of many physiological body functions. For example, it helps produce bile, combines hormones and vitamin D, and metabolises fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). It is, therefore, important to keep cholesterol levels within an ideal range, not too low and not too high.

Link Between Cholesterol Levels and General Well-Being

Studies show a link between lower than ideal cholesterol levels and depression, anxiety, mood swings, and Parkinson's disease. On the other hand, high cholesterol levels can lead to a host of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, paralysis, and so on. This happens because the build up of a hard fatty deposit (the plaque) in the arteries and consequent narrowing and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).

The problem of plaque formation gets worse if the fraction of HDL cholesterol in the blood is low. HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is the good cholesterol that prevents the buildup of plaque in the arteries. The HDL helps to carry the plaque-forming bad cholesterol (LDL) away from the arteries and tissues to the liver for breakdown and disposal. LDL means low-density lipoprotein.

The Age Factor

The need to pay attention to cholesterol levels increases with age. It is, therefore, important to know the various causes that can contribute to high LDL cholesterol levels and low HDL cholesterol levels. Some of these risks are:

Obesity: Obesity implies being overweight because of excess fat in the body, and excess fat translates to high cholesterol levels. The higher the total cholesterol, the higher would be the LDL level and, normally, the lower would be the HDL level.

Heredity: Heredity is another risk factor for developing high cholesterol levels, however, you can control it to some extent by adopting a healthy lifestyle and a low-cholesterol diet.

Diet: Diet plays an important role in controlling your cholesterol levels. Foods rich in cholesterol, saturated fats and trans fats push your cholesterol levels too high for your well-being.

Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical exercise decreases the HDL level, which in turn raises the LDL level and the total cholesterol level.

Smoking: Smoking hardens the arteries and decreases the HDL level, by increasing the LDL and total cholesterol levels.

Blood Test

A blood test called lipid or lipoprotein profiling measures the blood serum cholesterol levels, first on a fasting stomach and then after meals.

The lipid profile will give information about the total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol.

Lab technicians measure all cholesterol levels in milligrams of cholesterol per deciliter of blood (mg/dL).

The desirable total cholesterol level is less than 200 mg/dL.

You can consider 200--239 mg/dL as borderline high, but more than 240 mg/dL is considered high.

The matching figures for LDL cholesterol are: less than 100 mg/dL (optimal); 130--159 mg/dL (borderline high) and 160--189 mg/dL (high) and more than 190 mg/dL (very high).

An HDL less than 40 mg/dL is considered a major risk factor for heart disease.

>From 40 to 59 mg/dL is considered satisfactory, and above 60 mg/dL is what provides protection against heart disease and is highly desirable.

Any treatment for high cholesterol levels aims at lowering the LDL level while raising the HDL level. Adopting some lifestyle and diet changes that minimize the risk factors can effectively lower moderately to borderline high cholesterol levels, without the need for prescription drugs. But for higher cholesterol levels one has to resort to cholesterol-lowering drugs as well as making therapeutic lifestyle and diet changes. <bio>Get the latest in cholesterol levels know how from the only true source at http://www.lowercholesterollog.com.
Do you love to eat fatty foods? If so, then you could be a candidate for certain heart related problems. According to medical studies, the incidence of heart attacks and coronary artery disease is a result of an escalation of blood cholesterol levels. For that reason, people with cholesterol levels that are above the norm should protect themselves from suffering any form of degenerative disease by lowering their blood cholesterol. This can be realized by observing a low cholesterol diet, while at the same time engaging in moderate physical activities. If diagnosed with high cholesterol levels, there is also medication that can help in controlling cholesterol levels.

Having an excess of cholesterol in the blood is suggested by medical experts as the number one cause of hypertension, and heart disease. In general, the concept that cholesterol is harmful for the body is definitely a false impression. Cholesterol is an important component in our body's complete metabolism. It functions as a vital substance in the formation of cell membranes and also is responsible in producing vitamin D and other significant hormones in the human body. However, an increase in cholesterol levels may damage our entire physical condition. For this reason, controlling cholesterol is important.

Most doctors tell their patients who suffer from high cholesterol to lower their cholesterol level. This can be achieved by following a diet that is low in fat. Watch out for foods that are high in cholesterol and fats; adding non-fat and low-fat foods to the diet also helps. Also one of the best solution in controlling cholesterol is through exercise.
