Is there any drink more fun and refreshing than an ice cold milkshake? I don't think so. Milkshakes are a part of American food culture and have spread all over the world. Here's my list of the best milkshake recipe you can find anywhere.

Classic Vanilla Milkshake -- Made with vanilla ice cream and vanilla extract. The original "plain" milkshake is still a crowd pleasing favorite. Adding a maraschino cherry on top makes it a little more special.

Old Fashioned Chocolate Milkshake -- Made with chocolate or vanilla ice cream (depends on how intense you want the chocolate flavor), milk and chocolate syrup. This is always the second most favorite milkshake flavor. It's so easy to make and delicious to drink!

I Love Strawberries Milkshake -- Made with strawberry ice cream, milk, fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Yum! Makes me ravenous for one just thinking about it.

Purple Cow Milkshake -- Made with grape juice, banana and milk. Purple cows are cool (and very rare). This milkshake is a real treat for kids and kids at heart.

Chunky Monkey Milkshake -- Made with vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, banana and instant coffee. This milkshake may cause you to spontaneously get up and do the chunky monkey dance.

Cherry Vanilla Milkshake -- Made with vanilla ice cream, maraschino cherries, milk and chocolate syrup. A chocolate covered cherry in your glass.

Shamrock Milkshake -- Made with vanilla ice cream, low fat milk, mint extract and green food coloring. Pretty simple milkshake that you can enjoy at home, even though a certain well-known burger place doesn't make them any more.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Milkshake -- Made with creamy peanut butter, milk and chocolate syrup. A nice alternative to a peanut butter sandwich.

Caramel Latte Milkshake -- Made with coffee ice cream, milk and caramel syrup. Just as good or better than any drink at your local coffee or donut shop, plus, you can make this at home anytime you're in the mood to treat yourself with something extra special.

Whoppers Malt Milkshake -- Made with vanilla ice cream, chocolate malt syrup and whipped topping. This is the easiest way to make a milkshake that has that old fashioned malt taste. <bio>Donna Monday You can find all of the above milkshake recipes and more by visiting this site and clicking on the Milkshake-n-Smoothie link. http://www.best-free-cooking-recipes.com </bio>

Signs of a stomach ulcer can include nausea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain just beneath the ribcage, indigestion, vomiting, symptoms of anemia, weight loss, and blood present in vomit or bowel movements.

If you experience these symptoms for any length of time, it is important to seek medical attention. These are not symptoms to be ignored.

Stomach ulcers occur when there is a break in the tissue lining of the stomach. These ulcers normally occur in the stomach or the first part of the small intestine that leads out of the stomach, called the duodenum.

Commonly stomach ulcers are related to extreme stress, smoking and diet. Any of which are factors over which we have control, making it possible to heal a ulcer; if you work to eliminate some of the contributing factors that can lead to the development.

If you begin noticing the signs of a stomach ulcer, these signs should not be ignored. In fact, an appointment with your doctor should be your course of action if these symptoms persist.

In order for your doctor to make a specific diagnosis, several tests may be ordered to help determine the exact cause of your stomach pain.

One of the first tests your physician may order is the barium swallow or upper GI series of X-rays. This test allows your doctor to identify and locate any ulcers and determine its type and severity.

The barium swallow test requires you to drink a "barium milkshake." This thick "shake" contains a liquid that will light up on an x-ray. The barium will light up on the x-ray making it easier for your physician to see exactly what is going on and causing your pain.

You are normally asked to eat only bland, easily digestible foods for two or three days before the test. After drinking the chalky liquid, you will be asked to lie down on a tilting examining table, which as it tilts, evenly distributes the barium around your upper digestive tract and allows the x-ray to capture images at different angles.

Treatment options for stomach ulcers can consist of over the counter medications, prescription medications, modifying your diet, perhaps a lifestyle change that includes the addition of exercise and reduction of stress, and as a last result, surgery.

In summary, any signs of stomach ulcers should not be ignored as the delay in diagnosis and treatment could lead to further complications. It is important to understand, however, that in many cases you have control over the factors that contribute to stomach ulcers. <bio>For more important information on http://www.a-stomach-pain.com.
Bottled drinking water is pure, right? Not necessarily. Bottled water can be less pure than municipal tap water in some parts of the United States. In fact, bottled water can actually be municipal tap water. Two examples are Coca Cola's Dasani brand and Pepsi Cola's Aquafina brand.

What is bottled water?

"Description. Bottled water is water that is intended for human consumption and that is sealed in bottles or other containers with no added ingredients except that it may optionally contain safe and suitable antimicrobial agents. Fluoride may be optionally added within the limitations established." The United States FDA

Who regulates what bottled water has in it?

The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates bottled drinking water, which is classified as a "food". The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates tap water. Amazingly, the EPA guidelines for municipal water are stricter than the FDA restrictions for bottled drinking water! You might buy bottled drinking water that is acceptable to the FDA but is not acceptable for use as ordinary bathroom tap water.

The FDA's specific regulations for bottled water are found in Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR).

What are FDA standards?

Under the standard of quality (21 CFR, 165.110[b]), FDA allows certain levels of contaminants in bottled water.

Contaminants bottled water has in it.

1. Coliform. Coliform are rod-shaped bacteria, such as E. coli, that are normally present in the human intestine. The FDA says that bottled water may have up to 9.2 coliform organisms per 100 milliliters. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

2. Arsenic. Arsenic is a poison. The FDA says that bottled water may have up to 0.05 milligrams per liter of arsenic. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

3. Chloride. Chloride is a compound of chlorine, a substance used to disinfect tap water. The FDA allows up to 250.0 milligrams per liter of chloride in bottled water. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

4. Iron. Iron is a metallic element. Your body needs some iron, but not too much. The FDA permits bottled water to contain up to 0.3 milligrams per liter of iron. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

5. Manganese. Manganese resembles iron and is used in fertilizers. Bottled water may contain up to 0.05 milligrams per liter of manganese. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

6. Phenols. Phenols are corrosive, poisonous acidic compounds. Your bottled water may contain up to 0.001 milligrams per liter of phenols. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

7. Dissolved solids. "Dissolved solids" is a catch-all phrase. The FDA allows bottled water to contain up to 500 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, of whatever type. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

8. Zinc. Zinc is a metallic element. Your body needs some zinc, but not too much. The FDA permits bottled water to contain up to 5.0 milligrams per liter of zinc. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

9. Fluoride. Fluoride is purposely added to some bottled water. If so, the label should say so. In addition, bottled water that is not labeled as containing fluoride may contain up to 2.4 milligrams per liter of fluoride. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Chemical contaminants bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows set levels of the following chemical contaminants in all bottled water. Amounts vary, but some are shocking, such as Barium. FDA regulations permit up to 2.0 milligrams per liter of barium. That is nearly the same as natural fluorides, even though barium is a toxic metallic element. Cyanide, another poison, is permitted in bottled water. See 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Here is a sampling of chemical contaminants bottled water has in it, along with the permitted milligrams per liter.

* Barium.................................... 2.0 * Chromium.................................. 0.1 * Copper.................................... 1.0 * Cyanide................................... 0.2 * Nickel.................................... 0.1 * Ethylbenzene (100-41-4)................... 0.7 * Monochlorobenzene (108-90-7).............. 0.1 * Styrene (100-42-5)........................ 0.1 * Toluene (108-88-3)........................ 1.0 * Xylenes (1330-20-7)....................... 10.0

Pesticides bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows set levels of pesticides in bottled water. There are set limits for each of 29 different pesticides. People who purchase bottled water believe, normally, that they are avoiding pesticides by doing so. For a listing of these pesticides, see 21 CFR 165.110[b].

Disinfectants bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows bottled water to contain set levels of residual disinfectants and disinfection byproducts. Examples from 21 CFR 165.110[b]:

* Disinfection byproducts

................... Bromate................................. 0.010 Chlorite................................ 1.0 Haloacetic acids (five) (HAA5).......... 0.060 Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM)............ 0.080 * Residual disinfectants

................... Chloramine.............................. 4.0 (as Cl2) Chlorine................................ 4.0 (as Cl2) Chlorine dioxide........................ 0.8 (as ClO2)

Radioactive materials bottled water has in it.

The FDA allows bottled water to contain set levels of radioactive material. See 21 CFR 165.110[b]. Three examples:

* "The bottled water shall not contain a combined radium-226 and radium-228 activity in excess of 5 picocuries per liter of water."

* "The bottled water shall not contain a gross alpha particle activity in excess of 15 picocuries per liter of water."

* "The bottled water shall not contain uranium in excess of 30 micrograms per liter of water."

Bottled water has in it more than regulations allow.

When bottled water does not meet the standards set out by the FDA, it might still be sold. By law, it should bear a suitable label.

Examples:

1. "Contains Excessive Bacteria"

2. "Contains Excessive Arsenic"

3. "Excessively Radioactive"

What You Can Do

* Take time to know what bottled water has in it. * Look for bottlers' web sites and compare information. * Write to bottlers with specific questions. * Remember that bottled water does not mean absolute purity. * Be sure yours is healthy drinking water. <bio>=A9 2007, Anna Hart.
The first steps in order to determine whether a patient has appendicitis or not are the patient's medical history and a physical series of exams. The abdominal lower right portion has a great sensitivity when it is pressed and the patient may also have increased fever. If the pain gets worse in the moment of releasing pressure, it means that infection got to the peritoneum causing rebound sensitivity.

Leucocytes Count

The number of leucocytes inside human body increases in case of infection. This increase is produced in different degrees following the stages of inflammation. This is not a specific situation for appendicitis, also occurring in case of other diseases so that this method is not enough to give a diagnosis so that other tests are necessary in addition.

The analysis of urine

By means of the microscope, the composition of urine is analyzed to establish whether besides leucocytes and red blood cells there are also bacteria. But this procedure is not recommended in case of inflammation or affection of the kidneys or bladder, because it looses accuracy. Diseases of the urinary system can often be confused with appendicitis and it is also possible for urine to appear normal in case of appendicitis.

Abdominal X-Ray

For children, X-ray scan proved itself very effective in the identification of faeces that block the appendix, this method having sometimes the same good results in diagnosing appendicitis in adults.

Ultrasound

This procedure implies the identification of internal organs by means of sound waves, but the appendix is perceived only in half of the cases. The impossibility to perceive this structure doesn't necessarily exclude the possibility of inflammation. Ultrasound is more effective in women because of its capacity to identify ovarian or fallopian tubes problems that can be taken for appendicitis.

Barium Enema

This method uses an insertion of liquid barium through the anus to fill the large intestine. This test usually identifies modifications of colon's shape that might suggest an inflammation and also the presence of other affections such as Crohn's disease.

CT scan

Besides the cases of pregnancy CT scan is very effective in identifying a possible abscess and excluding the possibility of other conditions with similarly symptoms to those of appendicitis.

Laparoscopy

Through a small camera attached to a thin tube inserted in the abdominal region, a general view of the internal organs, including the appendix in obtained. This method is very useful because it also provides the possibility of immediate surgery but it requires general anaesthesia.

No test can tell for sure whether the patient has appendicitis or not, so, in case of suspicion, the patient has to be supervised by a doctor for a while, take one or more of the tests above or have a surgical intervention. <bio>For more information visit http://www.whatcausesappendicitis.com </bio>

Crohn's Disease (CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Although Crohn's disease can affect any area of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anus it most commonly affects the ileum or the lowest part of the small intestine.

The chronic inflammation can cause pain and can cause the intestines to empty quickly and frequently resulting in diarrhea. This disease can be quite painful and at times debilitating and even more concerning is the fact that Crohn's can also lead to life-threatening complications.

Irritable bowel syndrome, Ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease all have very similar symptoms making the diagnosis of these diseases difficult at best.

Signs and symptoms of Crohn's can range from mild to severe symptoms and may develop gradually or appear suddenly, and without warning. Abdominal pain, often in the lower right area, and diarrhea are the most common symptoms of Crohn's disease.

Other symptoms can include weight loss, rectal bleeding, cramping, diarrhea, bloating, gas, skin lesions, joint pain and fever. Rectal bleeding is a serious issue and can be persistent, leading to anemia. The severity of symptoms varies from person to person.

Crohn's disease is diagnosed usually after your physician has ruled out other diseases. In order to diagnose CD, your physician may order blood tests to look for a low red cell count which may indicate anemia, an increased white blood cell count which indicates an infection, and a high sedimentation rate indicates inflammation.

A colonoscopy is one of the commonly utilized tests for diagnosing Crohn's disease. With this exam, your physician will insert a thin, flexible, lighted tube with an attached camera into your rectum.

This exam allows your physician direct visualization of your entire colon. It also allows your physician to take a biopsy, in which a small tissue sample is taken from the colon and studied further.

Your physician may also order a barium enema. This diagnostic test allows your doctor to evaluate your large intestine with the use of an X-ray.

Another exam is known as a flexible sigmoidoscopy. It is often used in conjunction with a barium enema. In this procedure, your doctor inserts a slender, flexible, lighted tube into the rectum to examine the sigmoid, the last 2 feet of your colon. Both of these tests can be uncomfortable and are not as reliable as a colonoscopy but fortunately are over fairly quickly.

Although there is currently no specific medication designed just for the treatment of Crohn's disease most treatment options focus on treating the symptoms of CD.

If you are suffering with an infection or abscess, medication specific to those conditions are generally ordered. Besides medications, other treatments include nutritional supplements, surgery, or a combination of these options. Treatment goals focus on reducing inflammation, pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding.

Even though there is currently no known cure, this often difficult to manage disease can be improved by working with your physician to design a treatment plan just for you. <bio>For more important information on stomach pain be sure to visit http://a-stomach-pain.com where you will find advice and tips on common stomach pain causes such as Crohn's disease, constipation, and other articles that you can view at http://www.a-stomach-pain.com </bio>

Science has been searching for the connection between weight problems and our brains for a long time now. New research points to a gene that could prod people to overeat and gain weight. The most recent findings indicate that obese people seem to have fewer dopamine receptors in the brain... giving them less of an ability to feel pleasure in eating and encouraging them to eat more to get the same pleasure.

The research used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the pleasure centers of the brain in a group of 53 female university students and 33 teenage girls, looking at the response to food. Subjects were given sips of a chocolate milkshake, and then a tasteless solution. Participants were also checked for the presence of a genetic variant called Taq1A1, linked to a lower number of dopamine D2 receptors in the brain. The body mass index of the subjects was then tracked for one year.

At the end of the follow up, researcher found that subjects whose brain was less activated by the chocolate milkshake and who had the gene variant, were also most likely to have gained weight during the year of follow up. The increase was 3.6%. "This is the first imaging study which found less activation of dopamine receptors in [some] humans," said study lead author Eric Stice, a scientist at the Oregon Research Institute in Portland.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that gets released when you eat... bringing that feeling of pleasure. In our distant past, this "pleasure chemical" was a reward to the body for eating a life sustaining meal. The amount of dopamine released is related to the level of pleasure experienced, and it seems that some of us are just genetically predisposed to not have the number of dopamine receptors we need.

Earlier work has shown that obese individuals tend to have fewer D2 receptors than leaner people. This may explain why some can eat anything they want and not gain... and others feel they eat normally and still gain.

This latest work is the result of a collaboration between clinical psychologists from Oregon Research Institute and the University of Texas, and sensory neuroscientists from the John B. Pierce Laboratory and the Yale University School of Medicine. The research was funded by a grant (R1MH64560A) from the National Institutes of Health Roadmap for Medical Research.

"What is new here is that for the first time they have identified the consequences of this genetic polymorphism (type) in how the brain functions," said Dr. Nora Volkow who has worked to identify the role of the D2 gene (the one missing in the ORI subjects) in overeating. Now the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, she's worked hard to make the link between addictive behaviors and the human brain. She also makes the connection between lack of dopamine receptors and other abusive behaviors, instances of people doing things like drinking and drugs compulsively, even when they know better.

And while you can't change the genetics of your brain right now, there are things you can do to help yourself fight back against weight problems. Eating a healthy diet, and consuming meals more slowly are important first steps. You'll also want to be sure you're active - getting two to three workouts per week - to help activate the dopamine pathway and reduce the urge to overeat.<bio>Over 14,000 people have joined Kirsten's popular (and sometimes controversial) Daily Health Bulletin, so why not join them and stay up to date with natural treatments for weight problems and other health news daily. You also get 5 comprehensive health reports free when you join - giving you all you need to treat common ailments, lose weight, look younger and feel healthy</bio>

Stomach cancer mortality is higher in Japan and Chile, presumably because of the different diets in those countries where they are less dependent on red meat.

Over the last 25 years the incidence of stomach cancer in the western world has decreased by 50% and the resulting death rate is less than a third of what it used to be but in less developed countries it is still a major cause of death, probably because in these countries by the time the disease is diagnosed (usually by means of a Barium meal) the stomach cancer is at a very advanced stage.

TYPES OF STOMACH CANCER

There are several different types of stomach cancer, some of which are very rare. The most common types of stomach cancer start in the glandular cells of the stomach lining (adenocarcinomas), this is where stomach acid and digestive enzymes are made, and where most stomach cancers start. When the stomach cancer becomes more advanced, it can travel through the bloodstream and spread to organs such as the liver, lungs, and bones. Stomach cancers that start in the lymphatic tissue (lymphoma), in the stomach's muscular tissue (sarcoma) or in the tissues that support the organs of the digestive system (gastrointestinal stromal tumors) are less common and are treated in different ways.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Early clues to stomach cancer are chronic dyspepsia and epigastric discomfort, followed in later stages by weight loss, anorexia, a feeling of fullness after eating, anemia and fatigue. Blood in the stools may also be present and if the Cancer is in the Cardia (top) vomiting may occur.

CAUSATION

The exact cause of stomach cancer is unknown although the presence of the Helicopter pylori bacterium seems to be a major factor. Predisposing factors include environmental influences such as smoking and high alcohol intake. Because stomach cancer is more common amongst those with a family history and with people with type A blood, genetic factors are also implicated. Dietary factors, particularly methods of food preservation such as pickling, smoking or salting also have an influence on the prevalence of stomach cancer.

DIAGNOSIS

Stomach cancer is diagnosed through an examination that may include an upper gastrointestinal (GI) series; endoscopy or gastroscopy where a thin flexible tube is passed down the throat so the doctor can see into the stomach, esophagus and upper part of the bowel Barium meals and Barium swallows. Because stomach cancer can spread to the liver, the pancreas, and other organs near the stomach as well as to the lungs, the doctor may order a CT scan, a PET scan, an endoscopic ultrasound exam, or other tests to check these areas.

Stomach cancer can spread (metastasize) to the esophagus or the small intestine, and can extend through the stomach wall to nearby lymph nodes and organs. Metastasis occurs in 80-90% of individuals with stomach cancer, with a five year survival rate of 75% in those diagnosed in early stages and less than 30% of those diagnosed in late stages.

TREATMENT

Although stomach cancer may be treated with surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy, in many cases surgery is the treatment of choice. Even in patients whose disease is not considered surgically curable, resection offers a palliative effect and improves potential benefits from chemotherapy.

The nature and extent of the cancer determines what kind of surgery is most appropriate. Common surgical procedures include, partial and total removal of the stomach.

Antiemetics can control nausea, which increases as the cancer advances. In the more advanced stages, sedatives and tranquilizers may be necessary to control anxiety. Narcotics are commonly necessary to control sever and unremitting pain.

In some cases of advanced stomach cancer, a laser beam directed through an endoscope can vaporize most of the tumor and relieve obstruction without an operation.

PROGNOSIS

Stomach cancer is curable if detected early, but most people don't seek medical help until the disease is quite advanced, possibly because symptoms occur late and are often vague and non-specific. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidant vitamins (such as A and C) appears to lower the risk of stomach cancer. The rate of stomach cancer is about doubled in smokers so the cessation of smoking is essential.

In the United States and most of the Western world, the 5-year survival rate ranges from 5--15%. In Japan, where stomach cancer often is diagnosed early, the 5 year survival rate is about 50%. Five year survival rates for more advanced stomach cancers range from, around 20% for those with regional disease to almost nil for those with distant metastases.

Treatment for metastatic stomach cancer can relieve symptoms and sometimes prolong survival, but long remissions are not common. The survival of inoperable stomach cancer is usually only a few months if untreated. With chemotherapy the average survival is about 12 months. If cancer is found before it has spread, the five-year relative survival rate is about 61%.<bio>Dick Aronson has been involved in the healthcare industry for 35 years.
Heartburn or pyrosis is a painful or burning sensation in the esophagus, just below the breastbone caused by regurgitation of gastric acid. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. Heartburn is also identified as one of the causes of asthma and chronic cough.

Heartburn Diagnosis.

Physicians normally diagnose gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) based on symptoms alone. When the clinical presentation is uncertain, other tests can be performed to confirm the diagnosis or exclude other disorders. Confirmatory tests include:

Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Series: A series of x-rays of the upper digestive system are taken after drinking a barium solution. These can demonstrate reflux of barium into the esophagus, which suggests the possibility of gastro esophageal reflux disease. More accurately, fluoroscopy can be used to document reflux in real-time.

Ambulatory pH Monitoring: A probe can be placed via the nose into the esophagus to record the level of acidity in the lower esophagus. Because some degree of variation in acidity is normal, and small reflux events are relatively common, such monitors must be left in place for at least a 24-hour period to confirm the diagnosis of GERD. The test is particularly useful when the patient's symptoms can be correlated to episodes of increased esophageal acidity.

Endoscope test: The esophageal mucosa can be visualized directly by passing a thin, lighted tube with a tiny camera attached (an endoscope) through the mouth to examine the esophagus and stomach. In this way, evidence of esophageal inflammation can be detected, and biopsies taken if necessary.

Manometer test: In this test, a pressure sensor (manometer) is passed through the mouth into the esophagus and measures the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter directly.

Biopsy test: A small sample of tissue from the esophagus is removed. It is then studied to check for inflammation, cancer, or other problems.

Heartburn Treatment.

Prevention: If heartburn occurs when lying down, raising the head with pillows or sitting up frequently provides relief -- although care must be taken to avoid placing continuous strain on the neck. Avoidance of certain foods shortly before bedtime is frequently advised to avoid future attacks.

Medications: Antacids, H2-receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors are used - in that order - to treat heartburn.

Antacids: Daily treatment with Antacids is effective for 25-30% of people with GERD. Acid-blocking medications are the most effective for mild forms of the condition.

H2-receptor antagonists: With the advent of proton-pump inhibitors, H2-receptor antagonists are not widely used.

Proton-pump Inhibitors: Proton pump inhibitors are a class of medications which can be effective for people who do not respond to antacid or acid blockers. Proton-pump inhibitors directly block acid production in the stomach cells and provide more effective relief than less powerful medications. In order to prevent heartburn the medication disfigures and disables the proteins (proton pumps) that control the pH of the stomach, allowing the body to digest them.

Restricting Diet: Restricting diet is very important, since 90-95% of sufferers of heartburn or esophageal disorder can link their symptoms to specific foods. Therefore, it is important that heartburn sufferers manage their diets as a way to treat their heartburn. Sufferers should choose the kinds of foods and drinks which have little risk of causing acid reflux, while some kinds of foods or drinks should be avoided as they are major heartburn triggers. <bio>Find more information about Heartburn http://www.heartburn-e.com and what to do about it when you got a painful Heart Burn that simply will not go away.
Those who suffer from acid reflux and are looking for some acid reflux relief may experience more than complications other than bile reflux. Some acid reflux sufferers experience spasms in their esophagus. Your esophagus connects your throat to your stomach and is structured like a long tube. A healthy esophagus moves food to the stomach through a series of synchronized muscle contractions. Esophageal spasms upset this natural process creating many unpleasant symptoms.

What is an esophageal spasm?

Esophageal spasms occur when the muscle contractions within the esophagus lack coordination and prevent food from properly moving through your esophagus to the stomach. Esophageal spasms affect the muscles that are situated within the walls of the lower esophagus. They can occur in the following two ways:

1. Diffuse spasms -- This is when food traveling to the stomach is slowed due to irregular or simultaneous contraction of the esophageal muscles.

2. Nutcracker esophagus -- This is when food progresses normally to the stomach, but the muscle contractions are abnormally strong and painful.

Researchers are not exactly sure what causes esophageal spasms, but one theory is that extremely cold, hot or spicy food can trigger a spasm. Another theory is that GERD or heartburn, which causes irritation and inflammation in the esophagus, can trigger a spasm. Whatever the real reason, one fact remains -- People who are prone to acid reflux and have GERD are more prone to esophageal spasms, and the chances of developing this condition increases as they age.

The following are some symptoms of this condition that you should be aware of:

- Chest pain that is usually intense and is often mistaken for heart pain. This is the most common symptom. - Pain when swallowing - Trouble swallowing - Feeling something is stuck in the throat - Regurgitating food - Heartburn

How are esophageal spasms diagnosed?

This condition can be hard to diagnose due to the fact that its symptoms closely resemble other disorders such as GERD. Nevertheless, should your doctor expect that you suffer from esophageal spasms; the condition may be diagnosed through -

- Barium esophagram -- This is the most common test for people who suffer from trouble swallowing. The Barium esophagram utilizes X-rays to examine the esophagus and is the best test for detecting esophageal spasms.

- Esophageal CT scan -- This is a test that uses computerized tomography (CT) scans to create and capture cross-sectional sliced images of the inside of the body. The test may reveal that the esophageal muscles have abnormal thickness which could mean esophageal spasms.

- Esophageal manometry test -- This test involves the insertion of a thin tube into the esophagus via the mouth or nose. The purpose is to measure how effective the esophageal muscles are during the swallowing process.

Is there treatment for esophageal spasms?

Yes. The following are some suggested treatments:

- Manage underlying conditions -- If you are prone to heartburn or suffer from GERD, manage these conditions to reduce your chance of spasms.

- Lifestyle changes -- Change your eating habits such as avoid eating certain foods including those that are spicy or acidic, and avoid lying down directly after eating meals. Lifestyle change is also the best way to prevent esophageal spasms from occurring.

- Biofeedback -- This is an alternative therapy that teaches you to use your mind to control your body. Electrical sensors help you recognize the way your body responds to psychological stress so you can control it.

- Medication -- Muscle relaxants including nitrates or calcium channel blockers are often prescribed to reduce the severity of muscle contractions. Tricyclic antidepressants may also be recommended to help relieve pain.

- Surgery -- This treatment is extremely rare but sometimes is the only option in serious cases. Myotmy may be performed to help weaken muscle contractions, or an esophagectomy (the removal of the esophagus) may be needed. <bio>By Kathryn Whittaker.
Grocery shopping is one of those things that just has to be done. We can't put it off just because the kids are awkward. We still need to eat. The key to stress-free shopping with kids is time -- and plenty of it. How long would it normally take you to do the weekly shopping? OK. Double it. If you're short of time then try and make some elsewhere. If you try to rush the big weekly shop you'll get stressed, the kids will get stressed and you'll think the world and his wife is staring at you.

OK so how do you make time? Well, why not combine the shopping with a meal out? You'll save time on food preparation and washing up and it doesn't need to be expensive. Most large stores will serve food these days fairly cheaply. The added bonus of doing it this way is that the kids think it's fun. Children always think eating out is fun. You might not but they'll enjoy it.

Preparation is the next most important item on the list. Remember that children won't cry to deliberately annoy you until they reach 15-18 months old. Any younger than that and there's usually a reason. Make sure you have a small drink and snacks. Raisins are great because they take ages to get out the packet with little fingers. You can play games with older children and ask for their help with little items. Never try and shop if your child is likely to be hungry or thirsty and try to do it when they're least likely to be bored. This is another good reason to combine the shop with a meal as your kids will have eaten and had a drink and I find they can be interested for a while after lunch. The only problem is you will need to be prepared to leave your trolley and find a toilet for the older toddler round about aisle 5 (and 9 - and immediately once you've just unloaded the trolley!)

Finally -- there's nothing wrong with a bit of bribery once in a while. If you're shopping in the morning or mid-afternoon then perhaps you could offer to go for a milkshake and biscuit if they're good. If you're shopping after lunch then maybe put a small ice-lolly in the trolley for afterwards.

So -- to re-cap you need time (the less time you have the more stressed you will be), to be prepared (finding your child has a dirty nappy just as you get to the store and then remembering that you left the supplies in the house is really annoying - trust me), a little treat (not essential but always useful) and a lot of patience (always). Enjoy! <bio>Dylan maintains the http://allaboutkidssite.com website and is also involved with http://www.iinfodaily.com, an information site. </bio>

Sometimes, the infection is so serious ,that it needs antibiotic treatment in order to back off, and only after that, surgery can be performed, to avoid over-infection in case of a new incision.

Almost as common as the previous one is the abscess, generated by the localization of infection in a specific place, close to the appendix. Pus must be extracted from the abscess by surgery or non-surgical methods.

Researchers couldn't determine whether there is a purpose for the appendix inside of the human body, so that long-term consequences for health generated by appendectomy don't usually appear, except for particular cases, such as Chron's disease.

General information regarding appendectomy:

- The appendix represents a structure attached to the large intestine having the form of a worm.

- In case of viral or bacterial infection of the appendix, appendicitis appears.

- Appendicitis may complicate and evolve into peritonitis or abscess.

- Appendicitis is frequently indicated by pain, fever, and increased sensitivity of the abdomen

- Diagnosis can be given in most of the cases by taking into consideration medical record and physical exams but also by means of leukocytes count, X-ray abdominal scan, barium enema, ultrasounds, CT and laparoscopy.

- Infection of the wound and abscess are the most common complications of surgery

- To cure appendicitis the use of antibiotics and appendix removal surgery are necessary.

- Appendicitis is difficult to diagnose because it shares common symptoms with other diseases that affect the abdomen or pelvis.

In the case of appendicitis, the visit to the family doctor is the best thing to do if symptoms have been seen. Because of the number of conditions that generate abdominal pain, he's the person that can give the most appropriate diagnosis. Quicker treatment will eliminate the risk of later complications. <bio>For more information visit http://www.whatcausesappendicitis.com </bio>

Everyone is familiar with facial acne and back acne, but what is Acne Keloidalis Nuchae? Acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN), also often termed as razor bumps, is a type of papule that usually appears on the neck, nape or beard area. Improper shaving of facial and body hair commonly causes AKN.

Shaving is the most common solution to removing hairs. After a few days, you might notice some reddening and itching on the shaved area. Shaving causes the end of the hair to be really sharp. Sharp enough to cause skin irritation. When hair grows and curves back, it can hit the skin and cause AKN, which is also a type of skin inflammation. AKN breeds when hair tries to grow back and meet some foreign body like dirt. If not treated immediately, this can lead to harder bumps that usually appear in the beard and neck area.

The best way to prevent AKN is to simply avoid shaving. It this can't be done at least follow some pre-shaving regimen. You can soften your hair by using a washcloth drenched in hot water for five minutes. Preshave solution can also help the skin prepare for shaving. You can also opt to purchase lubricating shaving gel or oil. If you have a severe case of AKN, head on to your dermatologist and he can prescribe a medicated shaving solution.

When shaving, stroke in only one direction. Avoid stretching your skin. Do not use multiple strokes while shaving on the same area. Using an electric shaver rather than razor is also advisable. Try not to shave too closely to the surface of your skin. If you are used to shaving everyday, try to change your shaving schedule to at least three or four times a week.

If your dermatologist agrees, you can also try to use "shaving" chemicals that are available in the market. These products can remove facial and body hairs without actually shaving them. They contain calcium thioglycolate and/ or barium sulfide depilatories, which can dissolve hair easily so that shaving would be unnecessary. It is important to read through the packaging information of these kinds of products as they may cause chemical burns to individuals with sensitive skin. <bio>Jason Rickard is the owner of http://www.yourfavouriteshop.com - Offering White Noise and Relaxation CDs - Visit http://www.hapahapa.com for more articles </bio>

Are you looking for a way to make a quick and healthy meal? Look no further than a smoothie. A smoothie is perfect to replace a meal, as a healthy snack or as a quick meal for on the go.

A smoothie is a drink filled with a variety of fruits blended into a smooth liquid. It is like a milkshake full of nutrition. You can add protein powders or other healthy supplements to make a smoothie even more nutritious.

Not sure how to make the perfect smoothie? Read on. It is really quite easy. You will need a blender, so make sure to buy one at a local store. There are a variety of blenders, but a simple and inexpensive one should do the trick for starters. Next, head to the grocery store to stock up on all the ingredients you will need to make the perfect smoothie. You will want a combination of a few fruits. Most smoothie lovers use a banana and then a couple of other kinds of fresh or frozen fruit. You can use peaches, mangos, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or any other kind of fruit you prefer. Be sure to pick up some low-fat or non-fat yogurt as well. Yogurt adds nutrition and is good for creating the creamy texture in smoothies. You may want to add some fresh fruit juice to a smoothie, so add your favorite variety to the cart as well. Pick up protein powder or supplements as desired.

When you have collected all of the ingredients you need, the fun can begin. It is time to make your smoothie. If you are someone that needs to follow a recipe, you can find recipes for perfect smoothies online, in newer cookbooks, or even on the back of the yogurt container. And if you do not need to use a recipe just experiment and have fun. Try different combinations of fruits and play around with different amounts of each fruit until you find something that pleases your tastebuds. Simply put all of the ingredients into your blender and blend away. For a more icy texture, try adding a few icecubes to the smoothie. When you have the smoothie blended just right, simply pour it into a glass and enjoy with a spoon or a straw. It is that easy.

Even kids will love smoothies. It is a great way to get your kids to eat their fruits and begin to enjoy making healthy eating choices. Put their smoothies in fancy cups and allow them to make a party out of it. Smoothies will not have any artificial sweeteners, but the natural sugars in fruit make the smoothies seem as good as ice cream or desserts.

So the next time you need a quick and healthy meal in a hurry, look no further than your blender. Throw in a unique combination of fruit, juices, yogurt, and healthy supplements and enjoy a smoothie, the perfect meal. <bio>After making smoothies for years, Belina Storrey considers herself an expert smoothie maker.
A customer called me last week about stucco spraying his rec room ceiling and asked for some pointers. I explained how to go about it to him.

First of all I let him know you have to prepare the ceiling the same way as if you were going to paint it, this guarantees perfection. And if further, you could even finish paint it and then spray the stucco on. This is done when you want the stucco to be evenly thin not very heavy. The white background will camouflage the discrepancy of the stucco.

Next we cover up all things from the spray; basically anything the spray can land on or stick to. You need to now take some two sided tape and stick it to the wall butt under the ceiling, being careful not to go too low or too high onto the ceiling. Once you have gone all the way around the room with your two sided tape, you can now stick a light plastic drape onto the wall. Starting from the entrance where you will be spraying from, go all the way around the room and overlap the starting point by about 2 ft to ensure the spray is contained.

Now that your floors and walls are covered you can get your spray mixture ready. I use a medium texture which comes in a 50 lb bag. Fill a 5 Gal pail a little less than full of water and pour the mixture in slowly. Stirring it with a paddle, I use my inch drill and keep on adding mixture till it's a milkshake consistency (Not Blizzard or Wendy's but runnier) relatively light. Make sure the mixture has no lumps in it; if it is too thick it will clog the gun. After you have this soupy mixture ready, pour it into the hopper and start spraying a corner with a short blast to prime the gun. Once the gun seems to be spraying properly, start in the corner spraying sections about 2 square feet and work down the ceiling watching the way your gun is depositing the spray. Correct as you spray for density and evenness. As you work across, move backwards and continue the other way watching your overlap, as it is quite forgiving. You have to stay in one spot for a long time to really over do it. Once you have done the entire room, look around the ceiling for flaws and just touch them up in short blasts.

Make sure you are happy with the job and double check it. You won't be able to fix it after you removed the coverings.

Finally, when you are finished spraying, the cleanup starts. Have a large garbage bag ready for your cleanup. Remove the plastic from the walls, pulling down and away from the ceiling, careful not to scrape off the stucco. As you're pulling down the plastic, wrap the wet side into the center, keeping everything clean and dry. Finally, wrap the drop sheet inward not to spill its contents on the floor. Place all waste into the large garbage bag.

Finally, if you see somewhere that you have some over-spray, it's still not too late to scrape it and wipe it off. <bio>Visit http://www.HollywoodPainting.com for more information about a stucco spray and the other options we offer. </bio>

Finding an effective constipation remedy that will help relieve the pain can seem quite daunting for those who regularly suffer from constipation. Constipation is a condition where a person has difficulty moving their bowels and there are a number of ways in which it can be diagnosed such as a physical examination, colorectal transit study, anorectal function tests, barium enema x-ray, and sigmoidoscopy or through a colonoscopy.

However there are number of constipation remedies around which should hopefully help to improve the situation as well as remove the problem.

A good one to use is to train your bowel. If you can attempt to have a bowel movement at the same time each day (preferably first thing in the morning) as this is when your colon activity is at its highest and you can practice this quite easily.

Ensure that you improve your eating habits but including plenty of high fiber foods (cereals), and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. It is important that if you suffer from constipation you limit the amount of ice cream, cheese, meat and processed foods that you consume.

Drink plenty of water (about 1.5-2 litres each day) and avoid those drinks which can cause dehydration such as coffee and alcohol.

Also take up some form of regular exercise and not only will it help to alleviate the problems associated with constipation it will provide you with other health benefits as well.

However, if you find that are still not having regular bowel movements even if you have made the changes above then you wish to consider using a bulk forming laxative such Psyllium or Methylcellulose and they can be used for a long time without any side effects.

There are also other medications that can be used to remedy constipation such as Hyprosmotics, Lactulose, Polyethylene Glycol, Glycerin and Sorbital as well as salines like Magnesium Hydroxide, Magnesium Citrate and Sodium Phosphate.

However if you have found that neither of the above methods work for you then you may try such medications as Anthraquinones such as Cascara Sagrada, Emollients such as Docusates, Senna and Mineral Oil.

There are also stimulants such as Phenolphthalein, Castor Oil or Bisacodyl which may also help to remedy the problems associated with constipation but such medications as these need to be used under strict supervision of a doctor or healthcare worker and only as a short term measure as most of these have some side effects.

People who are using laxatives should discontinue use slowly and after some time the colon will be restored to its normal working balance.

Finally, you should only use enemas or suppositories as an emergency treatment and if all else fails then surgery may be your only alternative. <bio>Lee Dobbins writes for http://www.colon-articles.com where you can learn more about having a healthy colon and read about more constipation remedies. </bio>

At one point or other in our lives we have all experienced some form of heartburn. The effects of heartburn may be mild or frequent and painful, but they are symptoms that we can ease. There is however, an unfortunate side effect that can occur due to frequent heartburn irritations. This complication is a heartburn ulcer.

What exactly is heartburn ulcer? A heartburn ulcer occurs when the lining of the esophagus deteriorates due to the effects of the stomach acid that has been repeatedly refluxed into the esophagus. Due to the corrosive effect the acid has on the esophagus lining,a hole is burned through the lower section of the esophagus.

Heartburn ulcers are usually located in the lower section of the esophagus and they are sometimes connected to GERD disease. Gerd is chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease. There is a possibility that someone told you that heartburn ulcers are contagious. This is a myth. You cannot catch heartburn ulcers from anyone. A heartburn ulcer is usually a symptom of another problem.

As heartburn ulcers erode the lining of the esophagus, there is a strong possibility of bleeding occurring. This condition may lead to iron deficiency anemia. So what are the causes of heartburn ulcer?

The main cause of heartburn ulcers is the destruction of the esophagus lining by the H. Pyloridus bacteria. H. Pyloridus bacteria are usually found in the stomach. When the stomach acid reflux back into the esophagus the H. Pyloridus bacteria is usually brought into contact with the esophagus. Repeated acid reflux will bring a high amount of stomach H. Pyloridus bacteria into the esophagus where it will be strong enough to begin eating away at the esophagus lining. Paving the way for a heartburn ulcer.

There are other causes that can develop heartburn ulcers. These include the continuous usage of anti-inflammatory medications, smoking and use of cigarettes and nicotine products as well as tobacco chewing.

The digestive disorders of GERD and Bulimia are also thought to have connections with heartburn ulcer.

For a person suffering from a heartburn ulcer how can it be diagnosed? Your doctor will refer you to a gastroenterologist. A barium x-ray or endoscopy will be taken to see if you do indeed have a heartburn ulcer.

The main complications that heartburn ulcer sufferers have, are bleeding and perforation of the esophagus. Luckily heartburn ulcers can be treated. The underlying cause of the problem must first be found and then treatment may be started. Some of the common treatments that are used are antibiotics to eradicate H. pyloridus.

Anti-reflux medication, and the elimination of risk factors and prevention of complications must also be taken into account when medication is being prescribed for heartburn ulcers. For more information on heartburn ulcers, it is best if you talk with your doctor, as this can be a very serious condition. On a parting note, also try to avoid the twin evils of stress and anxiety. They too will aid in giving you a heartburn ulcer. <bio>Author's sites: http://www.easyhomeremedy.com , http://www.myanxietyguide.com , http://www.home-remedies-for-heartburn.com </bio>

Computer recycling refers to the practice of salvaging useable components from obsolete electronic devices or safely disposing off electronic devices. It is a practice that each one of us must inculcate because inappropriate handling of discarded computers and other electronic devices can cause environmental hazards.

Studies estimate that over 40 million electronic pieces become obsolete annually. These pieces have constituents such as lead, cadmium, barium, and mercury, which are hazardous to the environment. In a landfill, these materials seep into the ground and then into our food and water supplies. This can cause serious health concerns over a long period.

Obsolete Computers: Environmental Threats Obsolete computers that are simply dumped in the garbage drums are the biggest threat to the environment. The computer monitors have cathode ray tubes containing four to five pounds of lead that contaminates the environment acutely. Besides lead, the computers have many other hazardous elements such as mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium. When inhaled over a long period, these elements cause high blood pressure, liver and nerve disease, blood with poor iron, and even brain damage to the exposed group. This causes great concern, considering several million computers become obsolete annually.

Therefore, we must handle the obsolete electronic devices carefully. Moreover, different Environmental Laws have banned the illegal landfills by the disposals of computers and other electronic equipment. These laws necessitate sending the un-functional computers to a reputable recycler for harmless recycling. The laws also specify the need for regular recycling to avoid such computers from piling up.

There are several methods to deal with old computers. Some of them are as follows:

Give It For Reuse: If your computer is in a decent condition, you can sell it to a company or an individual so that it can be used further, or simply donate it to someone needy.

Trade It In: There are many computer dealers (e.g. HP) who offer trade-in promotions on computers and peripherals.

Auction It: You can sell the computer on eBay or any other auction site. You can also organize a quick garage sale and see if any of your friends or neighbors wants the computer.

Set up a Server: You can continue using the old computer as a server to store and share data.

Salvage Some Parts: You can see which parts of your computers are in good working condition. You can salvage those parts and use them in your new computer.

Go for computer recycling and safe the planet earth! <bio>Barney Garcia writes about many different topics.
