Are you nearing high school graduation and are unsure of what to do next or where to go to college? Or perhaps you are unsure if college is really the right next step for you? You should consider the option of serving with the army.

Think about all of the ways that your life has been protected and enriched because of the faithful service of men and women in the army. In many nations around the world it is the army that has allowed each country to become all that it is today. Imagine your life without all of the freedoms you love so deeply. Can you imagine living in a country where you could not attend school, could not get a job if you wanted one, or where you did not have the freedom to believe anything you wanted to? I cannot imagine a life without the freedoms and privileges that I have come to count on. And when I stop to think about it, the people serving in the army deserve a lot of my thanksgiving for the life I enjoy.

Serving in the army is a great way to be a part of a cause that is larger than yourself. In the army your life is not just about you, but it is about helping, serving, and protecting other people. There is no greater feeling than the one that comes from knowing that your life is counting for something huge, and serving in the army allows you this great feeling.

Deciding to serve in the army is also a great way to meet new people, experience new things, and see new parts of the world. Your years in the army can be full of learning and full of making new friendships that will last a lifetime. Many people who consider joining the army think that they will miss out on important things by not going to college right away, but just think about all of the extra experiences time in the army will give you. It will still be possible and even probable that you will have the opportunity to enter college once your time of service in the army is up.

Serving in the army allows young men and women to gain valuable skills and disciplines that will benefit you for the rest of your life. There is perhaps no better way to spend your first years out of high school than serving your country in the army. <bio>Matthias Reightman is a consultant for people considering serving in the army.
MacGyver probably had one. Rambo probably had one. George W. Bush should probably get one. Schwarzenegger certainly had one in Commando, and some of us remember a time back in the late 1980s when no self-respecting fashionista would be seen without one. For years, the Swiss army watch have been people's accessory of choice. They are not just timepieces used by the military as a standard issue. They are widely accepted means for keeping track of time. What's more, the Swiss army watch is unlike other watches in that it is given the same stamp of approval by those doyens of all that is precise yet stylish in engineering - the Swiss.

Some Things Don't Run in the Family

The Swiss army watch and the Swiss army knife are not just related, they are closely related. In fact, both have the same manufacturer. Unlike the Swiss army knife and its myriad attachments and extras, however, the Swiss army watch comes with almost no accessories. In fact, its design is so clean some people find it looking too painfully simple. The Swiss army watch would never win awards for complexity or creativity. It boasts of no extra space, no array of buttons, knobs, sundials, or secret compartments for hiding a wire garrote. As with almost anything Swiss, the design ethic applied to the general aesthetic of the Swiss army watch is to "keep it simple; keep it clean."

Going Commando

The Swiss army watch for men comes in a number of styles, made from a variety of different materials. The most popular is the standard "commando" Swiss army watch. Designs of this Swiss army watch range from the simple analog dial face with a leather strap, which tells the time where you are, to the very Aryan-looking Commando Chrono Nightforce.

This particular species of Swiss army watch comes with a robust and at the same time, sexy stainless steel strap, three large, Teutonic-looking knobs protruding form one side, a flourish of dials, digits, and date displays. Additionally, it is engineered to be able to tell the time in twenty different countries on any given date between AD 100 and the present day. Swiss army watch aficionados shell out as much as US$280 for the Germanic pleasure of being the proud wearer of this Swiss army watch!

It's a Girl Thing

If you think the Swiss army watch is for the male species alone, think again. While most of the Swiss army watches in the market have a bold and very masculine appearance, there are now Swiss army watches for girls. These Swiss army watches are smaller and prettier. What's more, they come in a wider range of colors.

Clearly, a Swiss army watch is not for the brave and good soldier alone. It's for anyone who wants to keep track of time the Swiss way - precisely yet stylishly. <bio>Experience the marvels of Swiss engineering first-hand when you get your own Swiss army watch ( http://executivegiftshoppe.com/swissarmywatch.html ) or Swiss army knife ( http://executivegiftshoppe.com/swissarmyknife.html ).
There's no doubt the Swiss Army Knife is no ordinary kitchen knife. It's been to battlefields and homesteads. It has seen campfires and bloodshed. It has lain in the hands of settlers, generals, and boy scouts. In fact, it has roots so firmly entrenched in human history you can't hack it off. More importantly, it remains as popular today as it had been more than a hundred years ago.

Birth of a Blade Two companies produce the Swiss Army Knife: Victorinox and Wenger. These two were awarded contracts to supply knives to the Swiss army. Victorinox knives are known as The Original Swiss Army Knife while Wenger versions are identified as The Genuine Swiss Army Knife.

In 1891, Victorinox delivered its first batch of pocket knives to the Swiss army. Two years after, Wenger followed suit. In those days, the Swiss army had just syatyed using a new rifle that can be dismantled with the use of a screwdriver. If you're a soldier, and you have mortars and gunfire pounding at you from all sides, a screwdriver is the last thing you would ever lug around with you in battlefields and on missions. A pocket knife, on the other hand, is an object that will come in handy to you, not just to cut ropes and clothes, but also to maim and kill should you run out of ammunition. So, why not incorporate screwdrivers into pocket knives? And while you're at it, why not throw in a can opener and a reamer for good measure? This was precisely what Swiss Army Knife manufacturers did, and that year, the Swiss Army Knife that we know today was born.

A Cross for the Original and the Genuine In recognition of the Swiss Army Knife's role in countless battles, the Swiss army conferred upon the blade Switzerland's national symbol, the white cross. Swiss Army Knives today still sport this very striking mark, and whether you're buying an original or a genuine Swiss Army Knife, expect this white cross to come with your blade.

Cutting Edge Advantage Swiss Army Knives are made of stainless steel. They are very sharp and strong. It doesn't matter how small the blade, can opener, screwdriver, and reamer are. They not only serve their functions, they do so well.

Everyone's Blade of Choice Today, you need not become a member of the Swiss army to lug a Swiss Army Knife around. People from different walks of life from various parts of the world get their own Swiss Army Knife because it is singularly one of the handiest tools known to humankind. It contains a multiple layer of tools, and always comes with at least one blade. Moreover, a Swiss Army Knife's tools can be easily rotated in and out of its distinctive red casing.

A Swiss Army Knife is so handy and portable, in fact, many see it not as a knife, but as a survival kit. With a Swiss Army Knife in your hand, you can slice your way through life's many complications. <bio>Get your own Swiss Army Knife ( http://executivegiftshoppe.com/swissarmyknife.html )! http://ExecutiveGiftShoppe.com has everything Swiss and stylish, from a Swiss army watch ( http://executivegiftshoppe.com/swissarmywatch.html ) to a leather portfolio ( http://executivegiftshoppe.com/portfolios.html ). </bio>

This pocket knife has served well during World War II and had become one of the most popular tools in the military until the present.

From the very start, the Swiss army knife was designed to help in troubleshooting different types problems. In fact, many experts see this pocket knife as the ultimate troubleshooting tool. The original design of the Swiss army knife includes tools like the blade, the screwdriver, the wire tripper, can opener and the reamer. At that time, these were the things that were commonly used by soldiers in the field.

As time goes by, several other features were added into the Swiss army knife to answer the different needs of people. As of 2007, most Swiss army knives already have about 29 features including a laser pointer which can be handy when giving business presentations and a detachable USB flash drive which can accumulate 4 or more gigabyte of files.
By the end of the third century A.D., the empire was getting plagued by civil war and barbarian invasions. Eventually the old legions became disorganized and spread out. Cohorts were disbanded and others were sent to various regions to fill gaps in the defense. Legions were spread out across the empire's now huge territory. The empire had now expanded and subjugated many territories and people, and with that came the recruitment of non-Romans into the army. It helped appease and control the newly won areas by offering citizenship at the end of a military career.

The practice of allowing non-citizens to join the army began after the Marius Reforms. "The link between citizenship and military service" was now severed. Especially during the civil war period when many legions were raised, men were recruited to the army even though they lacked the essential requirement: citizenship. Especially when the Empire became so large that it was divided into the East and West Empires, "the imperial authorities found it difficult to recruit citizens over large areas of the empire". This meant that when a barbarian or other enemy threat arose in different areas of the east and west empire, it was easier to raise barbarian armies and use ally troops as a large chunk of the army, instead of having a "one size fits all" professional army across the whole empire. It was not that the Roman Empire's citizen population was declining during this period. On the contrary, citizenship had never been higher, and there could have been a steady flow of Roman citizens into the army if the imperial authorities did not rely so much on mercenaries and barbarians. This in the end, as we will see, directly contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire.

>From the start of the empire to the end, the army steadily became more culturally diversified. By the third and fourth century, the army increasingly relied on employed barbarians and allies to do the fighting, instead of training the vast population of Roman citizens. The army became more of a "mercenary" body, as the number of allied troops outnumbered the Roman ones. This diluted the once proud and powerful army into a mixture of unreliable troops. <bio>John hilde is the owner of Armor Venue. The prices in the market keep on changing for the Military team logo and gear, it also depends on the demands for the products.

Alternatively Military team logo and gear are sold at a reasonable price when there are exhibitions that are held for Military camps.

People have different likings and so for some Navy team logo and gear fascinates and to some Air force or BDU's.

There are many military lovers who love to collect anything connected to Military and they stack it in their home.

These military lovers feel proud of everyone who is in Airforce, Army, Navy, and BDU; because they know that they are fighting for the country <bio>Dana Bradley writes about http://www.teamlogoandgear.com and http://www.teamlogoandgear.com/Coupons/FansEdge.com.html </bio>

Your little boy has finally grown up. It seems like yesterday that you were carrying him in your arms. And, in a few years that seemed like a flash, he has turned into the sixteen-year-old before you. It is a moment any father would be proud to witness. As you regard him with pride, you can't help but wonder what you should give him for his birthday. A new car would've been perfect but you have already made up your mind to give it to him after his graduation.

The Next Best Thing To A New Car

Perhaps you could give him a Swiss army knife. Having survived many battles and camping trips, a durable Swiss army knife is the best way to spell out endurance and perseverance. These two qualities will serve him well as he journeys through life. Life can be harsh and he may meet a lot of setbacks that he would need to get over in the future.

Being an object that is used in the military, a Swiss army knife can also be a symbol of loyalty and devotion. Many soldiers have fallen and risen with their knife safely tuck in their belongings. Better yet, when their ammo has run out, their knife becomes their only hope for survival. The Swiss army knife has accompanied many soldiers in battle and has stayed with them through the good times and the bad times. With this as a gift, you can emphasize the importance of loyalty and devotion in any relationship. It is also the best way to say that you will be with him through thick or thin. And, just like a Swiss army knife, you can always be counted on.

Because this compact instrument contains a collection of tools that can be used in many situations, many boy scouts have a Swiss army knife. Whether it's as simple as opening a can of beans or as complicated as attending to someone who needs first aid, the Swiss army knife is always ready to help. By giving him one as a gift, you are sending him the message that he should always be prepared. In life, many obstacles will come his way. And, because you care about him, you want to remind him that he should always be watchful so that he could prepare himself to overcome them.

It's More Than a Knife

A Swiss army knife usually consists of a blade, a can opener, a screw driver, a reamer and other day-to-day tools. It is portable and compact. And, you can take it anywhere. It perfectly carries the message that size doesn't matter. No matter how small it is, its efficiency as a tool doesn't decrease. And, because it has different tools and sizes, it can suit many personalities. Even better, it can deliver all the messages that you'd like to relay to your son. It symbolizes all the virtues and lessons that you would like to pass on. <bio>Looking for a swiss army knife (http://www.executivegiftshoppe.com/swissarmyknife.html)?
The soldier released his parachute mid-air. He reaches the ground and wades through a murky swamp, making sure to raise his rifle above his head. He uses his compass to move towards the coordinates he was given. Then, he peers through his binoculars and sees the fortress that he and his battalion have to storm for a search and rescue mission. After surveying the place for a few minutes, he grabs the communications receiver attached his uniform belt and calls headquarters. They inform him that he and his battalion have to strike at exactly 16:00. The soldier looks at his wrist, only to discover that he had left his Swiss army watch at the base!

The Army, the Army! Switzerland's military has the characteristics of both a regular army and a militia. It is probably best known for its up-to-date equipment, including Swiss army watches. The army's origins can be traced to the Old Swiss Confederacy's cantonal troops. This group had two functions: it may be called upon to help its own members, or to fight outside threats. These armies were later changed to a federal army. In the late 1980s, the size of the Swiss army began to shrink, and the trend continues to this day.

Pilot Your Way Through Life Among all the Swiss armed forces, the Swiss Air Force is the smallest. Consequently, there is much competition to get positions as aircraft pilots. In fact, at the age of 16, parachutists and potential pilots must conduct training during their own spare time. One can join a unit of candidate pilots after finishing officer school and finishing basic training. Though you may not join the Swiss Army, you must practice or train hard for any type of position you wish to have. A Swiss army watch can assist you in this undertaking by ensuring that you keep appointments and follow schedules.

An Engineering Marvel Soldiers training for Switzerland's military learn several practical lessons. Although they are far from begin boy scouts, the Swiss Army lives by the same rule. "Be prepared" is a mantra Swiss soldiers have to live out. It is thus not surprising that Swiss army items, such as the Swiss army watch, are engineered with the same mantra in mind. The Swiss army watch, like the Swiss Army itself, is ready for just about any blow or challenge. Designed to be durable, classy, and precise, the Swiss army watch is the very epitome of everything that's wonderful and amazing about Swiss engineering.

Keeping Time Uniquely What makes a Swiss army watch so distinctive? The first is the workmanship. The Swiss, in general, are expert watchmakers. Switzerland is even touted as the watch-making center of the world. The Swiss are such excellent watchmakers, in fact, watchmaking is one of the country's oldest, if not the largest, industry. The Swiss government supports watchmaking in every way, including establishing schools and courses for training people in the craft of making Swiss army watches. Other reasons a Swiss army watch is on a league of its own include remarkable finish, durability, precision, and incredible attention to detail.

So, should you get your own Swiss army watch? The answer is a resounding yes. A Swiss army watch will not only help you keep track of of time, it will let you keep time accurately and uniquely. <bio>Get your very own Swiss army watch ( http://executivegiftshoppe.com/swissarmywatch.html ) when you visit http://ExecutiveGiftShoppe.com.
The French and Germans have argued about the territories of Alsace and Lorraine for centuries. In 1871, after losing the Franco-Prussian War, France was forced to cede the territories back to Prussia. When Germany invaded Belgium in 1914, France seized upon the opportunity to restore its honor and reclaim the coal rich regions of Alsace and Lorraine. On August 14, 1914, the French army under the command of Generals Foch and Dubail marched into Lorraine. The German forces (Sixth Army) were led by Crown Prince Rupprecht and equipped with machine guns and heavy artillery.

The German strategy was simple. On August 14th, they began a controlled retreat intending to draw the French armies into attacking heavily defended areas. The French First and Second Armies easily marched forward. On August 17th, Foch's XXth Corps was able to seize Ch=E2teau Salins. On August 18th Dubail's 1st Army advanced into Sarrebourg and on the same day the 2nd Army took control of Dieuze. As the French armies continued to advance, they were met with increasingly heavier resistance from the German troops.

Rupprecht grew impatient with the retreating strategy and requested orders to attack. There are contradictory reports whether the order to counter attack came from Army Chief of Staff Helmuth von Moltke or if Rupprecht used his own authority.

On August 20th, the German Sixth Army attacked the French 2nd Army. Since the French army had been advancing extremely fast, they had no trenches or other defensive positions to thwart the German offensive.

The XXth Corps led by Foch was able to maintain its position, but the 1st and 2nd armies were pushed backed. Gaps began to form in the French lines. On August 22nd, only 8 days after the French offensive began, the Commander-in Chief of the French Army Joffre was forced to order a retreat to Belfort, Epinal and Toul where trenches were in place and a stalemate between opposing forces followed. <bio>Get military knives at http://www.thompsonoutdoors.com/-c-21_66.html </bio>

Let's face it. The battle of the sexes has not answered any questions. If anything, we're more baffled about the workings of the opposite sex than ever. It's no wonder why dating and relationships are such tedious exercises. Each expects too much from the other, leading to disappointment and ultimately, disaster.

The Almost Perfect Man

Is there such a thing as a perfect man? This is a question foremost in most single women's minds. After years of searching, most women have come to the conclusion that there isn't. There are those lucky enough, however, to have found a man close enough to perfection and definitely mate-worthy. These men dress right, have good hygiene, and keep great jobs. They are stable in every possible way =96 financially, emotionally, and mentally. If you do manage to snag one of these rare species, do your best to keep him. Chances are it'll be awhile before you find another, or worse, never.

Know One When You See One

How do you know when you've found a keeper? Men are a strange bunch and most women can't tell right away that they've found the cream of the crop. Some women will tell you to look at the teeth. If they're too perfect or too flawed, dump him. A man who is forever-and-ever material supposedly has teeth that are just right.

Short of prying open every one of your date's mouths, there are, of course, better ways to know if a man is a keeper. Over the years, women have accumulated intelligence on how to tell, ranging from finding out about his past relationships to whether he has a Swiss Army knife, the latter being a very effective determinant. If your man owns a Swiss Army knife and actually knows how to use it, start looking for wedding dresses.

Knife It For What It's Worth

So what's all the fuss about a Swiss Army knife? It's quite simple, really. A Swiss Army knife symbolizes responsibility and readiness, meaning a man is responsible enough to take care of a family and might be quite ready for matrimony. You've just found yourself a Boy Scout =96 always prepared. A Swiss Army knife is also a beacon of masculinity and maturity. You'll never have to wonder if he bats for the other team, or if you have a big baby under your care.

Of course, the man's Swiss Army knife has to be more than for show. He has to know what each of those steel blades are for and must have used each of them at least once. After all, anyone can own a Swiss Army knife, but very few actually know the merits of owning such a tool.

Indeed, finding the perfect (or almost perfect) man is a task almost as gargantuan as finding the Holy Grail, especially in this day and age when nobody believes in destiny anymore. There isn't always somebody for someone, only for a select few. Not everyone believes in happy-ever-after anymore, only that it's happy right now. But if you believe with all your heart that The One exists for you somewhere, chances are he is. <bio>Trying to find a gift for your man?
Army rings, military rings, and navy rings are considered as one of the top men's accessories next only to ties and a good watch. Almost every man worth his salt knows what kind of army rings, military rings, and navy rings to buy. They should not be hollow, but solid-backed. Authentic rings are also usually made of solid gold or silver. These rings are not metal-plated with a token dipping in gold. These are made with the good stuff. Of course, having a good ring does not end with buying it. Proper maintenance is key if you want your ring to last. Even if your ring can beat that of Frodo's, it still needs to be cared for.

These rings are still jewelry and ordinary metal jewelry care is enough for light cleaning. However, for stains that won't budge, resist scraping. Instead bring your army rings, military rings, and navy rings to a professional jewelry cleaner for expert cleaning. But for those who want to save some bucks (these rings aren't cheap), there are a few tricks to keep your ring from being damaged and some tips for light cleaning.

First, keep your army rings, military rings, and navy rings free of perspiration and dirt. This goes without saying that before doing any potentially dirty and rough job like mowing the lawn or home renovation, it is better to take your ring off. Perspiration may discolor your ring if it is soaked for long periods. Dirt particles are rough and can scratch your ring. Even if your ring is solid gold and not like the cheap gold-plated ones, it is still better to take precautions.

Second, avoid exposing rings to chemicals like detergents or chlorine. Why? Because army rings, military rings, and navy rings don't mix with laundry. Also, only insecure show-offs wear rings in swimming pools. Aside from being tagged as an insecure show-off, your are throwing away a fortune by discoloring and tarnishing your rings in water with chlorine.

Third, always wipe rings using a clean cloth to remove surface grime. The cloth must be soft and smooth to improve the luster of your army rings, military rings, and navy rings. Do this before storing your rings because surface dirt like oil and dust may cling to your ring and cause permanent discoloration. Store rings in soft individual pouches or in their original, velvet-lined box. This will keep them from getting rubbed or scratched against each other.

Lastly, don't be rash and quick to use those advertised jewelry cleaners and polish. Unless from reputable manufacturers, they are likely to discolor your army rings, military rings, and navy rings. Instead, like a true Boy Scout, make a simple solution of mild detergent and water. Dip a soft fabric in it and wipe your rings with the cloth. In the same manner, use water to remove the detergent and soap residue from your rings. If you don't know what a detergent is, rubbing alcohol will do. Just don't forget to wipe it off your army rings, military rings, and navy rings. It is still a chemical, you know. <bio>For more valuable information on army rings, please visit http://www.armyrings.net </bio>

The power and effectiveness of the army also emanates from the superior fighting force and battle tactics of the army. Until the Marius Reforms in the late 2nd century B.C., the Roman army was comprised of five main troop types. Generally the youngest and poorest were recruited to the Velites. They served as skirmishers in the army and were intended to pepper the enemy with initial Javelin fire. They were equipped with swords, javelins, and a small circular shield (the parma). Velites also covered their helmets in wolf skin, to differentiate themselves from the rest of the army.

The main fighting force of the army consisted of three main troops: the Hastati, Principes, and Triarii. The Hastati, named after the thrusting spear they used to carry called the Hasta, were armed with the gladius (Spanish short-stabbing sword), two pila (one heavy and one light), and carried an oval shield called the Scutum. All troops wore bronze pectoral armor and a bronze helmet. However, the Hastati wore tall upright feathers to increase their apparent height and intimidate the opposing army.

The Principes were modeled in the same fashion as the Hastati, except they wore no feathers and were composed with more experienced men.

The oldest and most mature became the Triarii. They also were armed and armored in the same fashion except they carried a thrusting spear instead of the pilum. It should also be noted that the first class of every troop type, based on their finances and property, wore a shirt of mail, to separate and give them a sense of elitism from the other men.

Much of the success of the Roman army can be attributed to the command structure also. Though after the Marius Reforms the army was much more organized and therefore more effective, the early Roman Republic army was still organized legibly, not into hordes. The Hastati and Principes were divided into ten groups of 120 men called maniples, and the Triarii into ten maniples of sixty men (600 in a legion). There were ten maniples of Hastati and Principes in each legion, totaling 2400 men. The remaining force was made up of 1200 Velites. Each maniple had two centurions, in which the most experienced held the command of the maniple. A legate was in command of the whole legion consisting of 4200 men. <bio>John hilde is the owner of http://www.armorvenue.com They sell authentic, historically accurate armor and weapons replicas.
The next major change in the army took place at the end of the 2nd century B.C. when Gaius Marius was elected Consul, placing him in command of the Roman army. Ceaseless attacks from the Germanic tribes forced large armies to be raised to defend Rome. However, just with Cannibal in the beginning, the legions suffered defeat after defeat, and the number of "legal" men (men who owned land) to be recruited was dwindling. Most had already fought and died or else was still fighting the Germanic tribes. In this emergency, Marius had no choice but to break the norm and devise a new recruitment method. Thus, the Marius Reforms took place. They were a serious of reforms that helped professionalize the Roman army and make a more efficient, uniform fighting force. It also greatly affected the citizens and society of Rome, mostly due to the new recruitment method.

Because land owners available for recruitment were dwindling to dangerously low numbers, he offered the general masses a chance to join his army. This included the jobless, poor, and uneducated in Rome and surrounding provinces and cities. With a solid financial structure that ensured payment and wages, war spoils, as well as retirement benefits he gave the "mob" of Rome a chance to earn money, land, a job, and a life worth living.

As Marius offered employment to anyone who was willing to fight, he also introduced something that was lacking in the previous army and would eventually become very important in the coming years: extreme loyalty. Before, the army consisted of landowners and farmers who were forced to serve for six years and longer if they wished. Of course, they wanted to get back to their wives, families, and land. Now, the legions consisted of the landless, and jobless (with of course, some wealthy), and service was increased to 20-25 years or longer. The army was now looked upon as a lifelong career, and was mostly an all volunteer army, except in times of emergency.

In the Pre-Marius times, the soldiers might have been loyal to the general, but were really fighting for the survival of Rome, their lands, and their families. Now, the troops were extremely loyal to the Legate, as Marius encouraged a strong bond between the troops and the General. Though the immediate effects of a loyal army to the general may not have been seen, it had major impacts on the Roman society during the next several centuries. Eventually, the army itself had a role in selecting emperors. They, along with the generals, commanded more influence than many of the emperors and senators. During the civil war period, the loyalty of the army to the general was very important in the eventual taking of Rome by Octavian (or better known as Augustus) and setting himself up as the first emperor of the Roman Empire. <bio>John hilde is the owner of Armor Venue.
Since the Early Roman Republic, the army was becoming a major part of the lives of the people. Wars and battles were fought just about every year, and it was common to have rituals to signify the beginning and end of the campaigns for the year. During the time of the republic, the army was solely a citizen army, and all citizens were liable for service (provided they were financially able to own some land) within the considered military age of seventeen to forty-six. Every year a selection process took place called dilectus. All men of military age were required to visit the capitol of Rome for possible recruitment. Citizens with property valued at over 400 Denarii--a silver coin which was the principle form of payment in the Roman times--were liable for service. When enrolled in military service, the men were required to serve a maximum of sixteen years, but often were only expected to serve six years with a callable period for the remaining ten years. Some went into service only one year at a time, and then would attend the selection process every year until their six years were up. It was not uncommon that all youths who were eligible for military service served in a campaign for a few years during their lives.

The army also gave the chance to give glory and honor to the family name, though there was more pressure on the rich and elite property class to do this. This also is another important factor that affected the lives of the Roman citizens. Serving in the army and becoming a veteran or hero was one of the biggest honors a Roman could have. If a certain officer gained enough power and influence through the army, he was also respected and often times had place of leadership and power in the senate. Therefore, the army directly was related to the balance of power within the political realm of the empire.

In the late 3rd century B.C., the army of the Roman Republic was just emerging as a formidable power, as they now controlled the Italian Peninsula south of the Po River. The army was now rapidly becoming an offensive war machine. What made the army during this period so effective? The biggest contributor was the important trait of being able to adapt and improve. After fighting with the Greeks and other societies that used the famous phalanx as their main tactical formation, the Romans adapted a more flexible and looser fighting method, which had a distinct tactical advantage over the phalanx. Also, the struggle with Hannibal showed that brilliant generals with inferior numbers could crush an enemy of superior numbers with less able generals. Rome realized that they needed to superior leadership to be an effective fighting force. <bio>John Hilde is the owner of an ancient armor, weapons, and accessories website called Armor Venue.
Sporting a manly ring can boost any man's confidence. Army rings, military rings, and navy rings are among men's top choices. There is nothing like the power and authority (even imaginary) associated with what these rings represent that is appealing to most men. However, all rings are not created equal. The market is flooded with rings that are of low quality. So before investing your cash in these flimsy imitations, here are a few things to look and ask for in buying an authentic, classic ring.

Quality products are made from quality materials. Before being blinded by a ring's gold sheen ask if that ring is made from solid gold. Be wary because some manufacturers use cheaper metals such as brass. The finished rings are then given a thin gold plating. Cheaper price for the same look right? Be careful though because platings are easily scratched and prone to wearing off. Over time, your golden ring will have a mottled appearance of patches of gold and brass. Since you are buying army rings, military rings, and navy rings for their powerful appeal, buy one whose appeal would last. Classic rings are made of solid gold. Meaning, the price you pay for them is worth it since they will last long. Their value as an investment would also fetch higher rates as time passes.

Classic army rings, military rings, and navy rings are characterized by having solid backs. They are not hollow like the cheaper rings. The classic rings' solid backs also gives them substantial weight to resist pressure. They are made for longer wear because the risk for crushing them when bumped, or any deformity is minimal to almost none. They are also less likely to irritate your skin than rings that were hollowed out. Classic rings are also more comfortable because of their solid back structure. Better or even perfect fit is guaranteed because classic rings are largely custom made.

Cheaper rings are mass produced unlike classic rings. As a result they have pits, uneven surfaces, and ugly marks. On the other hand, classic rings are hand crafted. This means that there is more attention given to details. Finishing is done by a master polisher. The rings, especially the army rings, military rings, and navy rings are carefully polished to give them depth and bring out their classic beauty.

In the final analysis, cheaper army rings, military rings, and navy rings are only good if you don't intend to keep and wear them for long. However, if investment, quality, and long-term use are what you had in mind, forego buying cheap rings. It would be better for your finances and worth your investment to buy classic rings. After all, when it comes down to it, classic rings have the best value and quality worth their price. <bio>For more information on Army Rings Military Rings, please visit http://www.armyrings.net </bio>
