    <content:encoded><![CDATA[One's ability to persuade meant great social prestige in the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/ancient+greek+world" rel="tag">ancient Greek world</a>. Homer regarded the rhetorical skills of Nestor and Odysseus as tremendous inborn gifts. It was <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/aristotle" rel="tag">Aristotle</a> who first introduced <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/persuasion" rel="tag">persuasion</a> as a skill that could be learned. At that time, rhetorical training became the craze for citizens of Athens, especially for the politically elite.  The first book ever written on persuasion was Aristotle's The <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/art+of+rhetoric" rel="tag">Art of Rhetoric</a>.<br /><br />The book's basic principles established a foundation for persuasion that still holds true today.  Aristotle taught that rhetoric was an art form that could be approached systematically by a formula for all persuasive attempts. <br /><br /> Ethos refers to the personal character of the speaker.  Aristotle believed that audiences could be persuaded if they perceived a speaker as credible. In his own estimation: "We believe good men more fully and readily than others."  Aristotle also stated that "ethos is not a thing or a quality but an interpretation that is the product of the speaker-audience interaction." Ethos includes such things as body type, height, movement, dress, grooming, reputation, vocal quality, word choice, <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/eye+contact" rel="tag">eye contact</a>, sincerity, trust, expertise, charisma . . . well, you get the idea. It is the audience's perception of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/credibility" rel="tag">credibility</a> of the speaker. <br /><br /><br /><br />Aristotle taught that ethos was the most powerful of the three persuasive means. Indeed, scientific research has proven the power of individual ethos. A Hovland and Weiss' study gave students messages that were identical in all respects except for their source. High credibility sources yielded large opinion changes in the students while low credibility sources produced low opinion changes. <br /><br /> <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pathos" rel="tag">Pathos</a> is the psychological state of the audience. The psychological or emotional state of the listener can affect persuasion because "our judgment when we are pleased and friendly [is] not the same as when we are pained and hostile."  When considering pathos, it is important to know both the individual's actual state of mind and his desired state of mind. When you determine the difference between the two, you can use that knowledge to your advantage. By helping them see how they can get from their current state to their desired state, you can persuade people to do just about anything. <br /><br /> Logos is the substance of a message, or the logic presented to provide proof to the listener. Aristotle believed that humans are fundamentally reasonable people who make decisions based on what makes sense. This manner of reasoning is what enables the audience to find the message persuasive and convincing. <br /><br /><br /><br /> The Foundational Principles of Persuasion <br /><br /> 1. The Laws of Persuasion are Neutral <br /><br /> Central to understanding persuasion is the concept of neutrality. The laws of persuasion are neither good nor evil.  They simply exist. Just as nuclear power can be used to create electricity or an atomic bomb, persuasion can be used to create unity or to force compliance. Whether the outcome is good or bad depends on the person using the laws and how that person applies the techniques of persuasion. Some people desire to win at any cost, using any available tactics or misusing the laws of persuasion. These individuals are willing to use guilt, violence, intimidation, temptation, bribery, and blackmail to get the desired result. <br /><br /> However, when used properly, persuasion is our best friend.  Through persuasion we create peace agreements, promote fund-raising efforts, and convince motorists to buckle up.  Persuasion is the means by which the coach of an underdog team inspires players to win. It is also the method employed by the Surgeon General in convincing people to take preventative measures such as scheduling regular mammograms and prostate exams. Managers use persuasion to increase employee performance and morale. Hostage negotiators employ persuasion to convince criminals to free their captives. <br /><br /> 2. Persuasion Must Have an Audience <br /><br /> The art of persuading and influencing others always requires an audience. This component is constant, so it is critical to know how to adapt quickly to your audience's needs, wants, fears, and desires. Knowing how to research and read your audience will help you determine which tools or techniques of Magnetic Persuasion will be the most effective in any given situation.  Using the wrong techniques and tools, on the other hand, will automatically create barriers between you and your audience, which in turn will diminish your potential to persuade them.  When you effectively integrate the principles and laws of Magnetic Persuasion with the characteristics of influence, power, and motivation, your audience will always be friendly and desirable results will be the outcome. In the Pre-Persuasion chapter, I will spend more time on analyzing, adapting, and reading your audience.<br /><br /><br /><br /> 3. Effective Persuasion Requires the Adaptation of Skills and Techniques <br /><br /> Have you ever tried the same approach with a customer that your boss uses on you and had it bomb miserably? Becoming a Master Persuader requires more than mimicking other persuaders. You must not only fully understand the wide variety of persuasive techniques available, but you must also be ready to use the techniques best suited for any given situation. Acquiring this level of skill demands a commitment to watch, analyze, study, and apply the concepts of Magnetic Persuasion. <br /><br /> As mentioned earlier, "everyone is not a nail." Human nature is as varied as the colors of the rainbow. Human actions and thoughts are never perfectly predictable because each of us has different emotions, attitudes, beliefs, personalities, and traits. A beginner's tendency is to find one persuasive technique that works and stick with that. Unfortunately, you cannot use the same persuasion tool on everyone. Depending on the situation and the techniques you use, people will agree, refuse, or be indifferent to your efforts. The Master Persuader has many tools and can therefore adapt and customize them to suit any situation or personality. <br /><br /> 4. Effective Persuasion has Lasting Impact <br /><br /> Do you want short-term temporary results or long-term permanent results? Effective Magnetic Persuasion has lasting impact, but it requires dedicated study and long-term commitment on the part of the persuader.     <content:encoded><![CDATA[ "Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work." =96 Aristotle <br /><br /> As we reach the end of another work week I begin to hear those now famous words being uttered by various people, Thank God It's Friday! I sometimes think of myself as the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/luckiest+man" rel="tag">luckiest man</a> alive because I never felt that way. In fact, I longed to be at work even when I was at home during the weekends. Not that I had a bad home life but you see I really loved my work. I was one of those <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/crazy+people" rel="tag">crazy people</a> who said on Monday morning, "Thank God it's Monday". But don't consider me to be part of the majority here. No, it was the majority that said T.G.I.F. That term became so popular it was adopted for the name of a chain of restaurants. Have you ever eaten at a T.G.I. Friday's? <br /><br /> Of course I am not here to write about restaurants, and you knew that. What I am interested in here is the prevailing attitude of people towards their jobs. The fact that so many people can't wait to stop working on Friday is a sign that so many people do not love what they do for work. This is a <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/topic+that+interests" rel="tag">topic that interests</a> me because although I am retired, my love in occupation was to be a pre-<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/employment+skills" rel="tag">employment skills</a> trainer and motivational instructor. Everyday I told my <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/adult+students" rel="tag">adult students</a> the same thing: that they should do the kind of work that they enjoy. If you haven't read it yet, get a hold of Marsha Shinetar's book "Do What You Love -the Money Will Follow." The book goes a long way in supporting Aristotle's view that enjoying one's job does bring perfection to work. She speaks much about treating yourself with dignity and choosing work that aligns to the great "I" who you are. She speaks of the psychology of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/right+livelihood" rel="tag">right livelihood</a> and shows the importance of choosing work that matches your unique set of skills and characteristics. A job is as unique as we are. <br /><br /> However there are the practical kinds of people who will tell you that work is work and all work, even un-<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/enjoyable+work" rel="tag">enjoyable work</a> must get done by somebody. Money is the thing that counts and having a job that produces earnings so you can put food on the table is what is necessary. They further say that it takes a grown up to do work that we don't enjoy but must be done. "Grow up" they say, "and be willing to bite the bullet while you earn a living." <br /><br /> Interestingly, these who encourage us to do what we do not enjoy can quote some pretty supporting statistics that indicate that productivity is up in America despite the fact that people enjoy their jobs less than ever before. What are we to make of this argument? <br /><br /> I will say there is something to the idea that we need to make a livelihood and earning in a job we don't feel comfortable with may need to be done from time to time; especially when one is just starting out in life and finding their footing. We are bound to make bad choices of employment, but we don't need to charge off and quit work to find our pie-in-the-sky dream job without giving proper notice. Surely it is better to stay at the job until another can be acquired with a smooth transition. Work the bad job then and endure it if you must and do it with honor and with respect. But that doesn't mean we can't still look for the right job that fits us well. <br /><br /> Working in a job that fits your disposition and talents will benefit everyone concerned and you can't argue with that logic. Sure, there will be times in our lives when acting mature and keeping a job we don't like will be necessary. But if it is not necessary, work at the job that fits you well. Shinetar says in her book, "I have come to believe that our right work is just as important to our personality health and growth as nutrients are for our bodies." <br /><br /> Aristotle may be an old timer to us, but this is one true principle that doesn't change with time. Work at what you enjoy doing.     <content:encoded><![CDATA[If you've taken a first-year college history course - or read through a basic <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/history+textbook" rel="tag">history textbook</a> - you may have noticed a small gap. It's only a thousand years or so.<br><br>For a long time, the history of Western culture was told like this: around the fifth century BCE, math, philosophy and science developed, thanks to the hard work of some very smart Greeks such as Thales, Plato, Archimedes and Aristotle. Then Rome took over Greece, and Rome fell, and things went dark for a thousand years or so. Then the Renaissance came along, and thinkers like Galilei and <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/johannes+kepler" rel="tag">Johannes Kepler</a> took up where the Greeks had, in effect, left off.<br><br>Thanks to new historical research - and broader awareness of non-Western countries and of the very rich intellectual cultures being developed east of the Urals - this picture of the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/history+of+math" rel="tag">history of math</a>, philosophy and science is changing, slowly. But still, teachers tend all too often to skip over one of the most interesting stories in intellectual history - the way that math and logic, including the best insights of Greek logicians, became the property of Muslim countries during the long twilight period, from Rome's fall to the Renaissance, when most Europeans could no longer read Greek. Without the work of these great Muslim scholars, math today might be a very different animal. The Islamic <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/arab+empire" rel="tag">Arab Empire</a>, beginning in the eighth century, was a world intellectual capital, and Arabic became a language of learning to rival Latin. Some of the best mathematical reasoning in the world was done here.<br><br>We may as well start with <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/muhammad+ibn" rel="tag">Muhammad ibn</a> Musa al-Hwarizmi (9th century), a Persian astronomer deeply learned in the mathematical lore of ancient India. From his name (in its Latin form) we get the word algorithm, and from one of his book titles we derive algebra. It's appropriate that he should be associated with the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/history+of+algebra" rel="tag">history of algebra</a> - after all, his books preserved most of what the ancient world knew about algebra (as well as his own brilliant innovations), and his works helped to spread the use of Arabic numerals (the numbers we know and use today) to the West, thus making algebra a good deal more feasible. (To understand why this is important, imagine trying to do algebra problems while using Roman numerals: XIIa times XXVb equals c? No, thanks.)<br><br>Then there's Al-Karaji, who around 1000AD invented the proof by mathematical induction - one of the most basic logical maneuvers in math. Poet Omar Khayyam, writing in the twelfth century, laid the groundwork for non-Euclidean geometry. During this period, Muslim mathematicians invented spherical trigonometry, figured out how to use decimal points with Arabic numerals (though the decimal itself had long been invented by Hindu mathematicians), and developed cryptography, algebraic calculus, analytic geometry, among other things.<br><br>As important as any of these contributions, though, was the rescue of Aristotle's texts from obscurity by Arab scholars. For long periods during the middle ages, Aristotle was considered by Western intellectuals as one of the world's great thinkers - but most of them hadn't read him. The few of his works that had survived the twin falls of Greece and Rome were available in sometimes poor, or rather freehanded and inaccurate, Latin translations, and many of his most important works weren't available at all. Here and there a Greek manuscript survived, but almost nobody, at this point, could read Greek. (Widespread teaching of Greek had to wait for the Renaissance - even famously learned scholars such as the poet Petrarch struggled over it.)<br><br>The same went for such seminal works as Euclid's Elements, the greatest known treatise on geometry. During this long period, when it was thought that these brilliantly logical works were gone forever, Islamic scholars kept their own copies and translations. We can write about anything under the sun and even those over it. The number of topics which you can write about is as boundless as your imagination. And yet, there are a lot of people who use this reason.<br /><br /><br /><br /> I think the problem doesn't lie within the `lack of topics' but on `lack of inspiration'.<br /><br /><br /><br /> Things to Write About <br /><br /> There are actually a lot of things that you can write about.  Nature is one of the most common topics. Nature's beauty inspires a lot of writers. Our right for the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/pursuit+of+happiness" rel="tag">pursuit of happiness</a> was also written by Thomas Jefferson in our <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/declaration+of+independence" rel="tag">Declaration of Independence</a> of the Thirteen Colonies; but what we use as our guide to obtain happiness is essential to truly achieving happiness. <br /><br /> If one reads the beginning <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/paragraph" rel="tag">paragraph</a> and the first sentence of the second paragraph of our Declaration of Independence, you will have, what I feel, is a realistic guide to how to achieve happiness. I have copied the beginning parts of our Declaration of Independence below for you to read for yourself, and I have underlined what I feel is our clue to what is our guide to this pursuit. <br /><br /> The Declaration of Independence of the Thirteen Colonies  In CONGRESS, July 4, 1776 <br /><br /> The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America, <br /><br /> When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. <br /><br /> We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. <br /><br /> I also read and see these patriotic words and their meaning from a Christian viewpoint. How you interpret these words maybe different than my interpretation. <br /><br /> Our Father in Heaven's first wish for us is that it is that we develop and have a deep, meaningful relationship with Him. His second wish is regarding our treatment and actions towards our fellow man be the same as we would do for ourselves. These are the primary commandments of our Father, but because of Him also granting us (free will) He does not make us do them, it is up to each of us as God's children to follow His wishes. Just as us as parents we can instruct and guide our children, but we cannot make them follow our wishes, we only hope that they will see their importance and meaning as adopt them as part of their character in their own lives. <br /><br /> If each of us does not respect and treat our fellow man with the respect and dignity as an equal, life can be hell on earth. Also, if each of us does not have a continuing and growing relationship with our Father in Heaven life can be hell on earth and beyond into the afterlife. <br /><br /> People from different walks of life, stature and income levels have made the statement that they feel something has always been missing in their lives, and not until they initiated an ongoing relationship with the Father in Heaven did this void seem filled. These constant reminders throughout history and in our daily lives themselves should be a neon sign for our guide as to what we need to do in the pursuit of happiness, but as the adage goes "History repeats itself." Why is this statement true? Naturally we don't invite <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/stress" rel="tag">stress</a> in to our lives, but it has a way of just showing up. <br /><br /> Granted most people would like to slow down, and enjoy life a little more. But circumstances beyond are control prevents us from achieving a much desired peaceful existence. Work, jobs you name it all <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/add" rel="tag">add</a> up to stress. <br /><br /> Here are some simple suggestions that one can make to alleviate not only fatigue, but help chase away the blues. <br /><br /> To start chasing away those blues, enjoy some <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/chinese+food" rel="tag">Chinese food</a>, such as a Sweet and sour chicken, orange beef. Any Chinese food that has a wonderful tangy flavor is said to simulate the brain center that is responsible for joy. So if you are having a really bad day. Perhaps you should do Chinese for lunch? <br /><br /> Treat yourself to a hot fudge sundae. The ice cream has loads of calcium plus folic acid, which have been proven to be mood elevators. The combination also boosts the production of serotonin, which is known to keep one happy for a longer period. It is a very well know fact, even a short meditation can be very rejuvenating to the body and soul. <br /><br /> Sit down and reminisce, by looking at family photos. You can't help but have wonderful feelings viewing past good times that have been capture in photos. <br /><br /> A wonderful way to relax at bedtime, a relaxing bath, topped off by baby powder. Yes baby powder. Not only is the powder soothing. The sent is known to be very relaxing. And in some trigger wonderful childhood memories. <br /><br /> If you want to feel peppy, get a massage. I am not talking about a costly Spa massage. This massage can be done just about anywhere. Ear massage; massage your entire ear with two fingers using just a light pressure. Yes it works; you will feel a good gust of pep. <br /><br /> My last suggestion, take time to listen to your favorite music. When you are on that tedious drive home after work, get the crank out by cranking up the radio. Make sure it's at a volume you can feel. Don't be afraid to turn up the volume. Music has a way of banishes the blues, and chasing a way fatigue. Studies have shown, enjoying music increasing the amount of oxygen to the brain, hence more energy, and a better mood. <br /><br /> Come through your door at night with a bit of pep, and a better attitude.     <content:encoded><![CDATA[Most of the mathematical concepts we encounter every day - numbers, addition, subtraction - seem so basic, so hard to avoid in discussing reality on even the most basic level, that it's hard to imagine someone having to sit down and invent them. Who was the first person to look at two rocks and think, "Two more and I've got four?" The very idea almost seems absurd.<br><br>But mathematics is, in part, a language - not just a set of <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/logical+relationships" rel="tag">logical relationships</a> and entailments that seems deeper than words, but a set of notations that allow us to discover those relationships. You can't see that twice two makes four, until you have a symbol for "two" that your brain can operate with. And those symbols - that language - did have to develop, strange as it may seem. (<a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/prehistoric+artifacts" rel="tag">Prehistoric artifacts</a> seem to indicate that the earliest humans had only four "numbers" at their disposal "none," "one," "two," and "many" - showing just how much our ability to talk about numbers depends on having the right words for them.)<br><br>We don't know which culture was the first to develop a number system more elaborate than "one, two, lots!" A 20,000-year-old bone found near the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/nile+river" rel="tag">Nile River</a> seems to show a sequence of prime numbers - which would indicate fairly sophisticated mathematical knowledge from fairly early on. Then there was the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/harappan+civilization" rel="tag">Harappan civilization</a> of the Indus Valley in present-day North India and Pakistan. As far as we know, these folks were the first to use decimals, among many other important concepts.<br><br>Archaeology also seems to find evidence of a sophisticated number system during the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/shang+dynasty" rel="tag">Shang Dynasty</a> in China, 1600 years before Christ. Archaeologists often turn up new discoveries bearing on the history of human consciousness - so it's hard to say who was the first to develop this or that idea with any certainty.<br><br>But many mathematical ideas - like many other things - begin with the Sumerians. This culture - considered by some historians the <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/cradle+of+civilization" rel="tag">cradle of civilization</a> - flourished near present-day southern Iraq between three and five thousand years ago, and besides contributing the world's first known work of literature (the still-impressive tale of Gilgamesh), they developed a numerical system based on sixes. If you've ever wondered why an hour has sixty minutes, or a minute sixty seconds - after all, it'd be much simpler if everything went by 100 (so that our basic unit of time was made of 100 smaller units, rather than sixty seconds, sixty minutes)- it's in part because of lingering Sumerian influence. As Sumer's culture declined, it was absorbed into the Babylonian Empire, which also seems to have produced mathematical thought, if the handful of Babylonian mathematical writings still remaining to us provides any indication.<br><br>Babylonians, Egyptians and ancient Indians all seem to have shared at least one important discovery - the so-called Pythagorean theorem, a rule having to do with how to figure the length of the sides of certain kinds of triangles. (Clearly, this discovery was of use to the culture that built the Pyramids.) The fact that this theorem was common to all three major ancient cultures suggests the degree of traffic they may have had with each other, despite some historians' suggestion that each culture was mainly closed-off to other places. And the fact that we know the theorem as the Pythagorean theorem - after the much-later Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras - illustrates the well-known, and often-criticized, tendency of some historians to want to give the ancient Greeks credit for everything.<br><br>Not that the Greeks don't deserve plenty. Greek mathematics grew up alongside Greek philosophy and Greek science - indeed, the three disciplines weren't really separated; for the ancient Greeks, all the disciplines of knowledge were one thing. Thales, for example - whom you'll often find cited as the first Western philosopher - used geometry to calculate the height of the pyramids, among other things. In any case, Greek thinkers took the young art of math to a new level of sophistication. Euclid wrote a geometry textbook so percipient as to remain useful today, Aristotle defined laws of logic, and Archimedes remains near the top of some math historians - all-time greats list.
