Popular with new and more experienced gardeners alike, annuals are some of the most beautiful, lively, and interesting of all flowers. The massive diversity of annuals, their wide range of colors and styles, and their ease of care make annuals an in-demand choice for gardens everywhere.

Do you know what makes and annual plant truly an annual? For an annual to really be an annual, the plant must finish its entire life phase in one planting season. The seeds germinate, the flowers bloom for the spring and summer months, the plant lays its seed and the plant then dies, all in one planting cycle.

There are some plants that are treated as annuals but are not truly annuals. Some sensitive perennial plants are used as annuals and replanted each year, especially in colder northern regions. While these plants could regenerate in warmer planting zones, in colder zone they are can't re-germinate and are planted as annuals instead.

Conversely, some annuals are used as perennials. Some varieties of annuals drop such a large amount of seed in the fall that the seeds are able to germinate and bloom the next year. The plants are not perennials, but their seeds simply germinated and took root, and proceeded to bloom the following year. Some of the more common perennial impersonators include snapdragons and petunias.

There are several ways in which you can start annuals in your garden, either by planting them as seed, buying seedlings (or smaller plants), or buying more established plants. Many annuals can be bought as cell packs, which are a sort of multi-pack. Whenever buy plants to transplant, make sure that you plant them as soon as possible. If you can't plant them immediately, then make sure to keep the plants in a shaded area and water them regularly. Remember to also water the planting area so that you can moisten the soil well before you put your new annuals in the ground.

When using annuals in your garden it is important not to plant them too early in the season. The soil should be warm and the air temperatures should be stable before planting any annuals. To get the annual plant out of its packaging, lift the seedlings gently out of their packs by pushing on the bottom of the container. Try to make sure that the plant and its soil comes out intact.

If the roots of the plant are compressed, loosen them by tenderly breaking up the root ball or cut the sides using a small knife. Doing this will promote deeper rooting and longer plant life after the plants have been put into the ground.

Make sure that you plant your annuals in the ground at the same depth in which they came in the packs. After placing the plants in the ground, gently pack the soil down around the annual and water the area thoroughly. You should then apply a good fertilizer that is phosphorus-rich. Apply the fertilizer at a strength of two tablespoons of fertilizer per gallon of water.

Following these steps will help get your annual garden off to an excellent start. In no time you will have a garden filled with vibrant annual flowers. <bio>To learn more about flower gardening and to pick up a free gardening report visit http://www.flower-gardening-help.info </bio>

Mortgage insurance provides lenders a form of financial guarantee which covers the lender in cases in which the borrower defaults on a loan. For those looking to buy a home, agreeing to loan terms which include mortgage insurance, increases the purchasing power of the buyer a great deal.

Agreeing to buy mortgage insurance allows individuals the opportunity to buy a home with a down payment of only 5%-10%, as opposed to the 20% that is often required when the lender does not have the guarantee of mortgage insurance.

Buyers typically purchase and pay for mortgage insurance in three different ways. These ways include paying in annuals, monthly premiums, or singles. We are going to take a closer look at the available mortgage insurance payment options below:

1.) Annuals: The annuals payment option allows the lender to collect the first year's premium at closing and then all subsequent payments are made on a monthly basis.

2.) Monthly Premiums: This payment option requires the buyer to only pay for one month at closing and all remaining payments are then made on a monthly basis.

3.) Singles: The singles payment option requires the buyer to make a one-time single payment that is typically financed as part of the mortgage amount.

Mortgage insurance ensures the lender is covered in cases in which the borrower can no longer pay the loan and defaults on it. It is also a powerful bargaining tool for potential borrowers who are unable to come up with a large down payment. Offering to pay mortgage insurance can decrease the amount of ones' down payment by 10% to 15%.

But it is important to note that mortgage insurance does not have to be paid forever. After a certain period of time and when certain conditions are met, mortgage insurance is no longer required to be carried on the mortgage. <bio>For more information on getting better Mortgage Rates and great money-saving Mortgage Broker tips, and resources, visit http://www.lenoxnationalmortgage.com </bio>

If one is aware of the ways of looking after his garden, a huge change can come over in the appearance and general well-being of his plants. If you follow the easy clues given below, you will have a blossoming, healthy garden.

Chief Attention Should Be Given To the Fundamentals

One's floral garden requires ample water, the light of the sun and rich, luxuriant earth. The well-being of plants will suffer much if they are devoid of these necessary requirements. A floral garden should be watered repeatedly throughout arid weather.

Bulbs should be planted at the right profundity. Do not amass earth or mulch about the stalk while planting out perennials and shrubs, for in that case, the water will draw off and not go inside, as it should. The stalk could decompose due to too much warmth.

Plant Perennials along with Annuals

Since they develop and blossom for many years, the bulbs of perennial plants do not require being planted again. On the other hand, annuals blossom and develop merely in their season. If you plant perennials with annuals, you may be sure of having flowers all the year round.

Deadheading Will Promote Number of Blooms

Deadheading is the process by which, the top of a flower is clipped, following its drooping. More flowers are generated due to this process. The plants will be stricken with maladies like mildew if the deadheads are thrown in the garden itself.

Differentiate between the Useful and the Harmful Insects

Usually, garden bugs are not harmful but useful. Insects like butterflies, bees and beetles are called pollinators. Pollen grains are transmitted from flower to flower by these insects, so that fertilization takes place. For existence, 80% of the plants with flowers depend upon bugs.

Lifeless plant substance is decayed by sow bugs, dung beetles, and microbes like bacteria, fungi and others. The earth becomes richer in this manner, so that developing plants can utilize a greater number of nutrients.

Bugs like aphis, responsible for genuine harm, are prey to normal predators such as lacewings and dragonflies.

Intermittent use of fluid fertilizers helps flowers to remain in bloom for a long period.

Remember to trim lifeless and injured twigs. Fuchsias, on being grazed, usually break. The wrecked twig is not useless. Pot it and you will have a novel plant. <bio>Faisal Diab is involved with an online gardening project that informs and educates the gardening enthusiast through well-written articles.
Herbs are in existence for a long time and have served a variety of purposes. People have used them to cure illness and spice up different dishes; some people even believed them to possess magical powers. Do you dream to possess a herb garden of your own? Well- we present some ideas for you to set up your own herb garden.

Initial Planning

At first, select the herbs that you desire to grow. Also decide the types that you would prefer - perennials, biennials or annuals?

You also have to plan for the space that your plants will occupy in the garden. If you wish, you can have such specific information by purchasing books tailor made for the purpose.

Initially, chalk out a plan on paper for your garden. You should maintain proper distance between the annuals and the perennials so that when the annuals are pulled out, the perennials aren't disturbed. You can plant perennials on your garden-edge. This way when you till the garden, there won't be any risk of digging them up.

Another important fact to keep in mind is to plant the shorter ones towards the front side and the taller ones at the back. Also, keep adequate space between successive rows of plants so that they can grow properly. It would be very helpful if your plants are planted in the proper positions.

Lay-out plan

You can have a square herb bed. You can also divide your square bed into four segments by two paths of 3 feet that cross at the middle. You can use brick or stone for bordering such a garden. You may also use a wooden ladder. You can plant the herbs between the rungs of the wooden ladder that you lay on the garden. You may also try wagon wheel bed where the process of planting is very similar to that of wooden ladders. You just have to plant the herbs between the wedges of the wagon wheel.

Growing your plants

Though different varieties of plants have varying needs, majority of them need alkaline soil. So, you should select the herbs that you wish to plant while you are in the initial stage of planning. This will help you to chalk out the routine your plants will need. In case your herbs germinate from seeds, strictly follow the instructions on the packet regarding watering, soil and temperature.

To grow herbs is one of the easiest jobs. You simply have to make the necessary arrangements regarding sunlight, effective drainage, fertile soil, adequate moisture and humidity. Even if you just meet these requirements at the minimal level, you will be assured of a healthy harvest. <bio>Faisal Diab is involved with an online gardening project that informs and educates the gardening enthusiast through well-written articles.
Most of us are in awe of some of the landscaping we see when we travel. We can create that type of ambiance in our own backyards. Magazines and do it yourself shows are giving us the knowledge we need to transform a simple crabgrass filled backyard to an outdoor oasis.

You just need to do some planning and budgeting first and foremost. It wouldn't hurt to draw a rough draft of your plans. It does not have to be perfect sketches; simple shapes will suffice. Sketching your plans in color will help you distinguish your plants and flowers.

If the budget allows, and you don't feel confident enough to do it yourself, hire an expert; however, be proactive so that you will have some ownership in your project. You can at least tell your friends you selected the perfect spot for your sunflowers.

Once you've selected your perennials, plants that bloom annually and biannually, you can select you annuals. Your annuals usually die off after one blooming season. They are interchangeable from one season to the next. Some annuals may be transferred to the house in winter if they are still growing in the fall.

Fruit trees are a popular addition to a backyard oasis. The fragrance of the flowers and fruit awakens the senses. You will have to consider where you live in making your tree selection just like your flower selections. The position of the trees will be of utmost important. Away from the house would be ideal.

Backyard ornaments or statues make great accents to your oasis. Many people are doing it themselves. A short wooden bridge could lead to another beautiful part of your oasis. A fountain is a must for that tranquility and sedation we all need to take relaxation to the proper level. Then there is the lighting element.

Solar spikes are what people are using to light the ground these days. A string of lighting, lanterns and/or torch lighting makes everyone look attractive. There are so many types of fire pits available these days; you can be creative with your choices including making your own. Then there's seating.

I suggest that you make 2-4 different seating areas, depending on the size of your back yard. It gives 2 or more people the opportunity to hold different conversations. It also gives the homeowner a variety of spots to enjoy. A couple of Adirondack chairs and matching table in on area, a swing in another, and an umbrella table and chair set in yet another area. If there are a couple of mature trees in the yard, a hammock may serve you well here. Make the space your own and it is instantly an oasis.

Once you've planted your favorite flowers, trees and plants and you've outfitted your oasis with Adirondack chairs, and or loveseats, you've cut on the fountain, and the lights you're ready to turn on some soft music, prepare your favorite beverage and reach for nirvana. That's the way I see it, now how about capturing your own vision...<bio>To Find more about adirondack chairs and adirondack chairs.
Everyone needs some form of flower guide to get the most out of their gardens, especially those who may not have time to garden every day. Flower gardening is all about stimulating the senses with a display of colors. So what should we plant, and when?

The buzz in gardening seems to be about whether to plant annual or perennial flowers. Some of these flowers give us textures, shapes and heights, while others just go blooming crazy all season long. Here's a basic flower guide for these two kinds of flowers that will help you design a spectacular wash of color for your garden.

Annual Flower Guide:

Annuals do all of their growing in one season. The seeds germinate in the spring, the plants bloom and grow all season, and then they die. You will have to plant them each season, but the result is instant color. Also, if you make an error in your design about color or height, the wrong effect will only last a year.

Annuals produce an endless array of colors and sizes, and most are easy to plant and grow. They can be used for cuttings, in mass plantings, for edging, in rock gardens, in mixed beds, in containers, and in hanging baskets.

Indeed, most annuals are fabulous plants for the weekend gardener because they are so versatile and not too finicky. For all their glorious color, annuals are very inexpensive. You can start them indoors as seedlings, or buy bedding plants from your nursery or garden center. The majority of annuals bloom for most of the growing season.

Here's a list of some great annual flowers that are easy to grow, show off spectacular colors, and are worth every dig of a trowel to plant:

Begonia - Grows 6 to 12 inches tall. Flowers are white, pink, red, rose and scarlet.

Tricolor Chrysanthemum -- Grows 2 to 3 feet. Flowers are white, yellow, gold, red, or maroon, with contrasting color bands on the base of the petals. (This chrysanthemum is different from the perennial chrysanthemum called the "garden mum".)

Dahlia -- Grows 1 to 6 feet. Flowers are every color except blue and green.

Geranium -- Grows up to 2 feet. Flowers are white, pink, scarlet, orangish-red, red, and salmon.

Impatiens -- Grows to 1 feet. Flowers are white, pink, rose, scarlet, violet, salmon, and orange.

Marigold - Grows 6 inches to 4 feet. Flowers are yellow, gold, orange white, near red, and mahogany.

Zinnia - Grows 6 to 36 inches. Flowers are all colors except blue.

Perennial Flower Guide:

Basically speaking, perennial flowers live more than one growing season, returning year after year. When perennials finish blooming, their foliage provides wonderful background texture, form, and color for your garden.

Perennial flowers may only bloom for a short spell and at certain times of the growing season. This makes it more difficult to plant a garden limited only to perennials and still achieve the desired effect of constant color. For this reason, mixing perennials with annual flowers is the key to a fabulous garden of continual color.

Let's look at some favorite perennial flowers that offer magnificent color and depth to any garden, and will grow just about anywhere:

Butterfly Weed -- Grows 1 to 3 feet. Flowers are bright orange (great for attracting butterflies!) with pretty pods covering the plant once the flowering ends. Blooms all summer.

Chrysanthemum or "Garden Mum" - Grows 1 to 4 feet. Flowers are all colors but blue. Blooms in the fall.

Daylily -- Grows 1 to 3 feet. Flowers are all colors except blue and white. Blooms from late spring to fall.

Felicia -- Grows 1 to 2 feet; Flowers are blue-petalled with yellow centers. Blooms from early summer to fall.

Hosta -- Grows up to 3 feet. Flowers are white, lavender or pale violet, often with colorful foliage. Blooms from summer to early fall.

Peony -- Grows 2 to 4 feet; Flowers are white, pink, maroon or red. Blooms from late spring to early summer.

Shasta Daisy - Grows 1 to 4 feet. Flowers have white petals usually with a yellow center. Blooms all summer.

With a little experience and planning, you can create a flower garden that blooms from one end to the other, from spring through fall. Bring together a few of these annual and perennial flowers for a wonderful mixed garden.

Learn as you go, make your own improvements... but most of all enjoy whatever time you do have in your garden. Soon you'll be writing your own flower guide inspired by your garden creations!

Copyright 2006 Robert Mosse <bio>Robert Mosse is a garden and lawn care specialist and author of the "Easy" Lawn and Gardening Book Series.
Remember that a home is the most expensive thing that most people ever buy. It is your home where much of your time is spent. Many people enjoy spending their free time fixing up their home. While weekends may not offer a lot of time for major projects they do allow plenty of time for the easy home improvement projects.

You can do quick projects involving the living room. It doesn't matter if you have a very formal living room or it is a casual area, there are many easy things in the way of home improvement that you can do to spruce up your living room. While some may not consider painting to be a quick and easy project, it can be if you just add one color and do not paint the entire room.

If you paint just one wall or add wall paper it will not cost very much nor will it take very much time. If the room is not square you can make the project even quicker by sprucing up just the smallest wall. It might be just a small wall at the end of a hallway, but fresh paint or a new look can brighten up the whole area.

Another easy to do but often overlooked improvement is to update a lighting fixture. It only takes one new fixture a few tools and a little bit of time. It is easy to ignore light fixtures but it is just as easy to update them. They can dramatically improve and modernize the look and feel of a room. You can also use this as an opportunity to save some future money by purchasing a highly energy efficient light.

Surely you can find time to get your wrenches out for a few hours. You may have leaky or corroded water fixtures. They are not difficult to replace and there are many how to websites or books that will provide easy to follow steps to do just that. Shiny new faucets will make a big improvement to your kitchen or bathroom and you may end up conserving more water through this project.

Don't forget to do your home improvements outside as well. You may not consider hours of digging in the dirt as a great way to spend your weekend. However, improving your yard is not as hard as it may seem.

Your local hardware store or plant nursery always has a good supply of inexpensive plant options to brighten up your yard. Planting a few bright annuals in the spring is a home improvement project that brings instant curb appeal.

It is possible to buy whatever is in season, plant it and end up spending perhaps as little as ten dollars. These lower cost plants may not last more than one season but they are a quick and easy way to brighten up your home and yard.

In order to make longer term improvements to your yard you should consider planting trees. This will take a little longer than planting annuals as it involves more location planning and more digging. If digging large holes is not for you, the nursery can do this for you for a fee. Regardless, once the tree is planted properly it can provide home improvements for years to come. <bio>Jerry Cahill writes on a wide variety of topics with the goal of providing useful information.
Planting flower seeds in the spring has some distinct advantages over growing them at any other time of the year. The spring rain and mild temperatures make the ground perfect for sowing new flower seeds. When planting a flower garden, most flower seeds can be planted as soon as there is no more threat of frost. Annual flower seeds particularly need warm weather and spring rains in order to take hold and grow. If the warm weather is present, but not the rain, make sure to water new flower seeds liberally. If the soil is particularly dry, try adding a potting soil or peat moss mixture in order to give flower seeds the best chance to flourish and bloom.

While there are other times of the year for planting flower seeds, spring is the ideal time in for seeds to grow. When planting annual flower seeds in the spring, the gardener doesn't have to wait for the dormant period to be over, and will not be looking at a short life for the plants. Flower seeds grown in the spring will have the advantages of the rain and the spring warmth in which to sprout. Once the ground is thawed and there is not likely to be more frost, it is time to ready flower seed for the garden. In dry areas, the ground will need to be watered regularly in order to create the ideal environment for new flower seeds. In many dry regions, the soil may also call for fertilizer, peat moss, or mulch as well.

Annual flower seeds can be planted as soon as the weather is mild. Hardy annuals, those with a higher tolerance to cold, can be started at the very beginning of the growing season, even if there is the possibility of another frost. For those who wish to have their plants flowering as soon as possible, starting annual flower seeds indoors in the late winter or cold part of the spring, and then transplanting them outdoors, is one way to get early blooms. This makes for an early flower garden using cheap seed instead of using expensive plants or seedlings from a nursery. But annuals are not the only flower seed variety that responds well to spring planting.

As we move on towards the middle of spring, where the weather is lovelier and the frost is long gone, regular annual seeds that require warm temperature can be planted. For hardy annuals you can plant them in the early spring as they have a strong resistance towards cold spring frost. While you plant your hardy annuals, you can simultaneously plant your regular annual flower indoors and later transplant them outdoor when the weather settles. Once you have the regular and hardy annual flowers in your garden, you can see the result of having the prettiest garden as your flower would bloom continuously throughout the season. Besides annual, a lot of other varieties of flower seeds also can be planted in the season of spring as well.

Perennial flower seeds usually need some cold temperatures before being planted, but can do this naturally in the soil. Perennial flower seeds should be started early in the spring both to give them some cold temperatures in which to germinate, and to ensure that they will be large enough by winter to survive freezing temperatures. If the climate is warm and mild all year, these flower seeds may need to be refrigerated before they can be planted. Perennial flower seeds grow into flowers than can live for three years or more, making them a popular favorite for gardeners. Taking special care of these seeds will eliminate the need to replant them each year.

During the early spring, when the temperatures are still teasingly cold, perennial flowers can be planted naturally in the soil. This is because most of the varieties of perennial flowers need a little bit of cold weather to germinate before they began sprouting. This is also to ensure that they would have matured nicely and can withstand the cold and harsh condition when winter arrives. Not only that, growing perennial early in the spring would also guarantee that you would have a blooming garden with flowers earlier than any type flowers. Although not very suitable to plant in warm climate countries, those who simply insist of having them needs to keep them refrigerated before planting to give them time to germinate. Even if one is staying in a cold weather country, and had bought the seeds a little bit too late in the spring they still have to conduct the same practice of refrigerating these flowers. The beauty of perennial however is their life span as they can easily last for three years or more. Their life span would be longer if one takes good care of the seeds and nourish them appropriately.

Another seed that is usually planted in the spring is wildflower seeds. As the seeds can take root easily and are generally less tending than other types of flowers, it is known as one of the hardiest and most resilient flower varieties around. Not only that, they are usually cheaper and can grow easily in most climates. However, it needs to be planted in the early season so they can benefit from the spring rain in order to survive. It does not require any special fertilizers but may need some tilling in order to grow. Because wildflower seeds are cheap, easy to grow, require little labor and resources, most of the states have taken to planting them to prevent erosion. That's also the reason why most people plant them at their flower garden.

Although the cost of bearing the wildflower seeds is cheap, the flowers that they produce can be quite a sight. That is also one of the reasons why many homes choose to have the wildflowers at their backyard or even along their driveway. The ease in which they can sprout and grow, as well as requiring little tending and care makes it a favorite in a garden or a yard. To get a better chance of them surviving longer, one can do a little bit of tilling. Like other plants as well, even if it's low maintenance one still need to water it especially during the dry season to ensure it will stay blooming in your garden. <bio>Jeff is the founder and president of http://cheapseeds.com, a leading retailer of flower seeds, wild flower seeds, perennial seeds, annual flower seeds and much much more. </bio>

When you go to the supermarket you can see fresh herbs for sale. These same herbs can be grown in your garden with a minimal amount of trouble. You can grow them from cuttings or seeds. You can divide the heavy growing herbs and plant new herb plants. Whatever format that you decide to use, herb gardening adds zest to your world.

Herbs are annuals, biennials and perennial plants. Herbs like Basil, Coriander and Dill are annuals that bloom for one season only and then die. Caraway and parsley are biennials that live for two seasons and bloom only in the second season. Perennials like chives, fennel, mint and tarragon 'die' over winter and then blossom each season once the plant has established itself.

Herbs need to be planted in a 20 by 4 foot garden space. In this garden, you can have separate plots for each type of herb. This mini plot is a 12 by 18 inch herb garden. With the many herbs that are being used, colorful and frequently used herbs can be planted around the borders of your plot. Parsley and Purple Basil are examples of colorful border herb gardening.

For your herb garden to thrive the soil should not be very wet. Herbs do not grow in wet soil. To make your herb plot well drained, remove about 15 to 18 inches depth of soil. To the bottom of the hole add some crushed stone or other material that is similar to the stones.

A compost and sand mixture added to the soil will lighten the soil's texture making it easier for the water to seep through the soil and drain away. Hummus will enrich the nutrients within the soil and restore the soil's Ph level. Then refill the hole higher than it was originally.

The herbs can be planted in the ground late winter. Herb gardening requires that you first grow them indoors in shallow trays. The herb seeds must not be covered with a thick coating of soil. The soil needs to be light and well drained. This type of soil texture will ensure that your herb gardening gets off to good start.

Once your herbs are planted outdoors there are a few insects that can attack the plants. Aphids like anise, caraway, dill and fennel herbs. The red mite spider attacks low growing herbs. Rust can be a disease-like status for mint plants.

But these minor troubles aside, herb gardening is a peaceful and intriguing activity that takes its place in history. Whether you use herbs for cooking, medicinal use or even aromatic usage, the art of herb gardening is making a comeback amongst gardeners. Join their ranks and enjoy the pleasures of using your own herbs.

To your gardening success!
Hanging baskets can be as plain or as ornate as you choose. Full, ornate hanging baskets are absolutely lovely when found hanging from lamp posts, porches and patio rafters. Of course there are other places to show off your baskets, including Shepard hooks and strategically placed brackets attached to outdoor structures. Such brackets made for this purpose can be found in your garden and hardware stores.

The thing to keep in mind when planting your hanging baskets is you are going to want to fill them with lots of trailing, flowering plants. Then you can add an upright plant or two in the center of the baskets for a more balanced overall appearance.

The ideal hanging baskets are created from those peat-lined wire baskets you can find in the nursery department of your favorite home improvement store. The reason these work so well is due to the fact that once they are filled with soil, you can place your plants not only inside the basket, but also poke them through the sides and bottom of the baskets, as well. Once the plants are going well, the overall effect is an entire globe-like display of beautiful, blooming flowers.

There are many different kinds of trailing flowering plants. Some of my favorites include trailing petunias, verbena, lipstick plants, trillium, and bridal veil. And, an absolute must have addition to a hanging basket is alyssum. While alyssum isn't a trailing plant per se, it's great for adding solid patches of color that bloom the entire summer. Alyssum comes in pure white, yellow and variegated shades of purple.

It's quite permissible to add some plants to your hanging baskets that may not bloom during the summer season. This would include Creeping Charlie and various herbs. Really, the whole idea is to just stuff your basket with a variety of small plants keeping in mind they are definitely going to grow! In other words, it's best to plant your young plants no closer than 3-4 inches apart.

As with any other container plantings, you will need to feed those in your hanging baskets. You can choose a compost which has already had sufficient nutrients added to last the entire growing season. This is a grat start for annuals. You can also buy slow-release pellets which you mix into the compost in the dosage recommended by the manufacturer. The alternative is to apply a liquid feed once or twice every two weeks throughout the growing season.

You will also need to make sure your hanging baskets are kept well watered. If you aren't sure that you will have time to water your baskets every day during the summer, think about investing in a drip system and a water timer. Again, both can easily be found at your local home improvement store beginning in early spring.

Lastly, give due consideration as to where you will be placing your hanging baskets. Most annuals mentioned herein love full sun and will reward you with bloom after bloom all summer long with little deadheading involved. However, if your basket will need to be placed in a shaded area, go for trailing fuchsias which come in all sorts of gorgeous colors. <bio>Liz Norman is an avid gardener and free lance writer.
Has your late summer garden seen better days? If your outdoor paradise is getting a little ragged, and you would like some easy and cheap gardening tips to get it back into shape in time for fall, keep reading!

Most gardens, no matter how well they are designed will have periods without a lot of bloom. But a late summer garden is more than just lack of bloom; it's overgrown plants, ratty leaves, spindly annuals and brown spots in the lawn. Here's how to fix these garden problems.

Cut back your blooming perennials by half. This will stimulate new growth, and create need for another flush of flowers in the fall for many varieties. It will also clean up the overgrown look of your flower beds.

If you still have brown foliage from spring bulbs showing, it is safe to cut them to the ground now. They have already stored all the energy they need for spring bloom, and the dead plant matter isn't doing anything for the look of your garden.

If you have a pest problem, you should be addressing it. You can use commercially available Sevin dust for many of the most common predators, or seek out an organic alternative. One good way to identify what is eating your plants is place a piece of white paper under the leaves of the plant being attached and give the plant a good tap or shake. Whatever pest is the culprit should fall onto the paper for easy identification. If you're stumped, pop it in a jar and take it to your local nursery for identification and advice on how to eradicate it while doing the least damage to beneficial bugs. Remember, we need those bees! Don't' poison them.

If you have annuals planted in containers or beds that have seen better days, cut them back hard. Apply a good dose of water soluble fertilizer and they will bounce back and start re-blooming for you. Petunias, alyssum and geraniums all need a good rejuvenation this time of year, but will bloom well into fall if you try this trick.

If your lawn has developed some dry spots, try raking in an organic compost or fine bark to protect the soil and hold in moisture. Water frequently during the day for a week or two until you start to see new green growth. Cut back on the watering gradually, but be consistent until the lawn is once again green in the spot.

A late summer garden may seem to have gone to sleep, but its pretty easy to throw a big basket of water on it and wake it back up. (Both literally, and figuratively!) Use these easy and cheap gardening tips to renew your garden, and have a beautiful spot to spend those quiet autumn afternoons.

Want free gardening tips and ideas?
Spring is here and decorating is in the air. We all love putting out fresh new looks in our homes this time of year, but have you thought recently about the outside? Often we're so busy decorating or redecorating inside, we forget to do the same outside as well. So here are a few quick and easy outdoor decorating tips that will help spruce up the curb appeal of your home:

1. Paint: You can paint the entire house and trim, or simply touch up the trim alone... either way will make a huge impact on how your home looks to the passing public.

2. Porch or Patio: If you already have a porch or patio, simply putting new furniture out can make a wonderful difference in the presentation of your home. Alternatively, you can simply buy new cushions or covers for your existing patio furniture. Other quick patio spruce ups can be as simple as putting out a few flowering potted plants, adding gnomes or statues, or putting a small water fountain into the space.

3. Walkways: Having walkways outside your home add a cozy, homey and inviting feel to the overall outdoor presentation. Just a straight concrete walkway can be spruced up by putting a bit of garden bed edging along each side... putting small solar walkway lights on each side... or planting colorful annual flowers such as petunias on each side. If you don't already have a walkway and want to create one, I think the prettiest are those made of stone. Add an extra decorative touch by making the walkway curve or wind a bit to your front door instead of leading straight there.

4. Yard ornaments: These can be as simple as a small bird house, a pole mounted outdoor lantern light, or even a wheelbarrow with flowers. Putting a little something extra in your yard defines you and your tastes, plus it gives your home a more unique personality that stands out from your neighbors.

5. Flowers, Plants, Vines and Bushes: Probably the most popular way to spruce up a yard quickly is to simply put out some pretty plants, bushes, vines and flowers. Annuals are great for adding dashes of color quickly, because you can usually buy them this time of year in bloom. To get continuous color and greenery, plant some perrenials too. Then once the annuals are starting to die out, you'll have something to replace them. You'll also have the added joy of seeing the perrenials sprout again for several years to come.

Would you like additional outdoor decorating tips?
Should the joy of gardening be reserved for those with a garden? Certainly not! You'll reap great happiness, plus pretty flowers and tasty vegetables, with container gardening.

There are all types of gardeners, living in all types of homes.

Even if your little piece of the world consists of a balcony, patio or rooftop, you can still get your gardening fix. Container gardening offers bright, beautiful, stackable, and practically limitless options for getting the most green out of your space.

In the past, gardening was an interest shared solely by landowners. These days, even those confined to condos, apartments and flats can grow a dream garden without owning a trace of turf.

Container gardening is simply planting fruits, flowers, herbs, or vegetables in a suitable vessel. Container gardening provides all the delights of landscaping, without the hassle of weekly mowing. In your container garden, you can grow annuals, perennials, climbing vines, even shrubs and small trees.

Creating a truly beautiful container garden means a lot more than putting a few plants in a few pots. A gorgeous garden requires careful thought and planning, whether it's on an acre of land or an 8 by 8 foot patio. The first step to planning your container garden is to find your USDA zone. This will help you to determine which types of plants will grow best under your conditions. For example, tropicals might not thrive on the west coast.

Take note of the amount of daylight your balcony or patio receives, and note if it is morning or afternoon sun. The direction of sunlight can make a big difference in how well your plants will grow. When you have done your research, it's time to choose your plants.

Whenever possible, purchase your plants directly from the nearest nursery, as these will generally be well-established plants that are ready to transplant. You should never leave tender young plants outdoors in temperatures below 45 F temperature, or expose them to soaring winds. If there is the risk of frost, be sure to bring your plants of all sizes indoors for the night.

Virtually any plant that grows in the ground will grow in a container. Plants need nutritious soil, ample sunlight, regular watering and good drainage in order to grow and thrive.

Virtually any type of container will do, as long as there are holes for drainage. If the water is not able to drain out, the roots will become soggy and eventually rot, killing the plant. Be sure that your container is big enough to let the roots grow and become well established.

Be creative with the containers you choose. Mix and match a variety of colours and materials to create interest.

Container gardening is a great option for budget-conscious people.

Pretty pots, a few bags of potting or topsoil and seedling plants or packs of seeds are all you need to create paradise on your patio. You should also pick up appropriate fertilizer and feed your plants as directed. In doing so, you'll have bigger, more brilliant blooms and healthier foliage.

Everyone loves the taste of fresh vegetables, and there's no reason why you can't harvest your own from your container garden. Most vegetables require only water and sunlight, so if you can provide these two elements, you've got yourself a salad in the making. Herbs, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes and even beans can be grown quite successfully in container gardens. You'll fill with pride as you offering these delicious homegrown gems to your dinner guests.

Even if you don't have a balcony or deck, container gardening can still be an option.

You have windows, so get clearance from your landlord to hang window boxes. You can also grow annuals and vegetables on sunny window ledges inside your home.

Community gardens are also great options for apartment dwellers. Ask your condominium manager or landlord to set aside a plot of land for a garden. You and other tenants set aside separate plots to plant and tend, or pool your resources and share the responsibilities and the rewards of the entire garden.

The onset of autumn doesn't necessarily have to mark the end of your container garden. When tender annuals and vegetables have withered, replace them with Mexican feather grass, cornflowers, eulalia grasses, lavender cottons, million bells, jasmine and other hardy varieties that can withstand autumn's chill.

Ask your garden centre, or search online to container gardening ideas from the industry's top gardeners, landscapers and outdoor living space designers. You'll find suggestions on how choose and care for your pots, how to grow succulents, roses and bulbs, and much more.

Even if you don't have a garden, you can still flex your green thumb.

Create a container garden and enjoy the beauty of nature, wherever you are. <bio>Robert Jones contributes articles to several web sites, including http://kemop.com and http://easy-recreation.com </bio>

It can be easy and inexpensive to start garden seeds indoors for spring planting. Here at The Garden Glove, we use several methods.

Method #1- Purchase an inexpensive dome style seed starter from your local garden center or discount store. These usually sell for less than $10, and contain everything except the seeds to get you growing, including a humidity dome to keep in heat, and soil or soil less cubes. The only downside to these is that the growing blocks are usually pretty small, so if you are going to plant fast growing annuals such as sunflowers, morning glories or squash, you might want to wait to just two weeks before last frost. Otherwise, you will have to transplant your seedlings into larger containers as they outgrow the seed dome.

This method works very well for growing perennials, since they are slower growing than annuals as a rule.

Make sure the growing medium is moist, place the seeds at the depth recommended by the packet, and place the dome on. You will see moisture condense inside the dome. This is great for starting out, as the heat and moisture is trapped in. However, once seedlings start to appear, you MUST remove the dome to prevent "damping off" a fungal disease that will kill the seedlings. Add water as necessary to keep the soil moist, but not wet.

Method #2

The second method is the most economical one. This is where we plant seed into reusable or recycled containers. These containers must have drainage, and be able to be moved easily. Tupperware, egg cartons or pots made from recycled newspaper are several popular ideas. Placed on a tray, such as an old cookie sheet they make great planting flats, if not too terribly attractive. It helps when using this method to enclose the entire tray in a clear plastic bag until seedlings appear. This does the same job as the $10 dome, by keeping in heat and moisture.

Method #3- This is my preferred method, and one I just started using two years ago. I picked up a tabletop portable greenhouse. It has several metal shelves for seedling flats covered by a poly "tent" to keep in heat and moisture. This makes it very easy for me to move the entire set up outdoors for daylight, and the tent keeps the heat in, even when it hovers near freezing outside. I can grow several hundred seedlings in this setup. I caution you against leaving it outdoors during windy conditions, however. Also keep in mind during sunny days it can heat up inside the greenhouse quite quickly, so make sure you tie up one side and occasionally monitor the temps in your greenhouse. When the weather is warm enough, remove the poly tenting entirely.

Once the seedlings are up, they must have very bright, though not direct light. Using a windowsill during bad weather is acceptable, but to grow healthy and strong, seedlings should be placed in either artificial light, or on a protected porch for much of the day. Make sure you bring them in at night, and don't leave them out on frosty weather.

You can create an artificial light system easily with a cheap shop light from the home improvement store, and a both a warm and cool 40 watt fluorescent tube. It does not have to be one of the more expensive plant growing tubes. Hang the lights from chains off a scrap 2x4 stand. Keep the lights very close to the seedlings, and leave on for at least 12 hours a day.

Starting garden seeds indoors will save you money and allow you to grow plant varieties in your garden that are special and unusual. It's easy, so try starting your seeds indoors today! <bio>Want free gardening tips and ideas?
Purpose

The first step in planning a garden is probably determining what kind of garden you would like to have. Gardens range in style and purpose so it is important to have a clear idea of the kind of garden you are trying to grow. Some main types of residential gardens include: flower gardens, vegetable gardens, zen gardens, herb gardens and formal gardens. Some of these are best suited to specific climates and locations. In order to make a good decision about the kind of garden you want to have it is important to know a few things about the space your garden is going to be taking up and the weather conditions that may help or hinder your garden's growth.

Climate

Where you live will greatly influence what you are able to do in your garden. It will probably be almost impossible to grow a tropical garden in Canada and rather silly to grow a cactus garden in a rainforest. You will achieve the most pleasing results in your garden if you make sure to grow elements that are native to your area; easy to grow; or simple to replace. If many of the elements in your garden are fairly uncomplicated, it will leave time to maintain your more precious orchids and roses.

Maintenance

While every gardener had the best intentions, it is important to know how much time is going to be spent maintaining the garden. Annuals must be replanted every year which allows you to recreate a new garden every year. However, the drawback of annual flowers is the need for constant upkeep. Annuals are comparably thirsty plants and need to be well-watered (but not over-watered). Many annuals require "pinching" or "deadheading" for better flowering. For many of us, the value of perennials, which will leave behind seeds that re-grow the next season, can be appreciated for the lack of tending needed.

Soil

Make sure your garden's soil is healthy. Healthy soil grows stronger plants and attracts fewer pests that might damage your plants. There are some simple ways to test your own soil. Ideal soil for growing veggies in your own garden will crumble easily when you attempt to form a shape from it. If it holds shape to easily, it may be too moist and overworking wet soil can damage the soil structure for several growing seasons, seriously reducing the likelihood of healthy plants. If you soil seems dusty, it is probably too dry for many plants and will most likely be harder to work.

Space

Take a look at the space of your garden. This will help decide what should be planted and where. Think out the logistics of your garden. Where are faucets located in relation to your various plants? Are there any areas where the ground is uneven and unlikely to drain properly? How do sun and shade play across the area? Are there places that are unlikely get sunlight? It may be a good idea to sketch your area. The more time you spend planning your garden the more pleasing your final result will probably be.

Aesthetic

A garden should also have a visual composition. The plants, flowers and/or various statuary pieces should work together in the given space to create something aesthetically pleasing. Think of how your garden looks from different angles and vantages, like from house windows and doors. Great looking garden fountains are available at http://www.garden-fountains.com/Categories.bok?category=Garden+Fountains.

Color palettes

Pay attention to your color palette. There are many ways to choose the colors of your garden. While there is neither right nor wrong in color selection if you've contemplated your palette ahead of time you will have greater control over the final appearance. Some of the most simple color schemes select from either warm or cool tones, while others rely on a single color for a striking monochromatic effect. While for an interesting and dramatic look you might select several analogous colors like shades of red and red violet and then use a complementary color, like golden yellow as an accent. Depending on the kind of garden you are planning you may want a wide variety of colors. Try to create grouped plantings when using many different colors to create a design and visual flow. Many single colored flowers will look dull from a distance.

Composing your garden

Appreciate the space you are using. If your garden is going to be planted along a fence or against a house wall use a vine to add height and shape to your garden. Examine textures and shapes. To keep balance in your garden, make sure to use not just long stemmed flowers but also groundcovers and low plants with a variety of leave sizes and shapes.

Add focal points

By using a fountain, birdbath or other piece of statuary, you can add year round ornamentation as well as a focal point for you garden. If you plan your garden carefully it can be beautiful year-round and not just at the height of the growing season. By using many planters and pieces of statuary in your garden you are have the advantage of complete control over your garden's shape. Take a look at some garden planter options. A garden consisting of planters can be arranged and rearranged to suit different moods, and different seasons to create something that provides visual interest year round. So if your having trouble deciding on a permanent look, using planters can give you design flexibility. Planters also provide shape and allow for greater control over plant growth.

Tips

When using planters it is still important to think about the heights and textures of every flower and plant and the containers that hold them.

Use ornamental rocks and small pieces of garden statuary to compliment taller planters. Place something tall and with an interesting texture and bright color in the center of your planter and surround it with lower, more simple textures for balance. <bio>http://www.garden-fountains.com is recommended by Elizabeth Jean as a source for wall water fountains, garden décor, or waterfalls. </bio>

Garden design is very difficult for those who have very little experience designing gardens. Of course like anything, the more you do it the more of a feel you develop a feel for it thus making it easier to do successfully. But, you are a novice garden designer, and then it's hard to know which flowers will like nice together, how high this and that shrub will grow, or when this or that tree will bloom. Garden design is a lot more than just creating a collage with picture of flowers in bloom. You have to remember when each flower will be at its peak. For many, the thought of free garden design software is attractive.

Before I discuss a piece of free garden design software, let me point out that there are several pay for software packages that are really cheap and affordable. Also, you can often find people selling used versions of garden design software for reasonable prices. As you consider free garden design software, keep in mind that they will not be as powerful as the reasonably priced pay for versions you can find out there.

The best free garden design software I have seen out there is actually a free version of a more robust pay for package. This is going to be the case with any free software that's worth using. But that's ok, what you are able to do with this free software is still impressive.

This free garden design software allows you to upload a picture of your own yard as the background for designing your garden. Then one-by-one you can add in hedges and shrubs, trees and flowers, annuals and so on. The software comes stocked with actual pictures, not illustrations, so you can see exactly what your garden will look like. When you are done, you can print the result on your color printer or email the results to friends and family.

Another cool feature of this free garden design software is the ability to watch the plants grow over the course of one, two and even five years. It's not enough to just see what your garden will look like at a single snapshot moment when everything looks perfect. This free garden design software allows you to see what your garden will look like at different stages of its development.

All software has a learning curve and isn't always easy to use or intuitive. This free garden design software comes with a video tutorial to get you started.
What could be more appealing than the riot of shapes, colors, and textures to be found in the flower-cutting garden interspersed with outdoor sculpture and concrete water fountains? It is easy to start one with just some basic design and planning tips.

What is a Cutting Garden?

The cut flower garden is designed to be functional by the nature of its very existence. Cutting gardens first began in the 16th Century for the purpose of bringing them inside to decorate the house and this tradition continues to this very day. Nearby concrete fountains were common not only for drinking water, but also for watering the garden plants.

A large cutting garden makes the perfect setting for weddings and other events and gatherings. Many people don't have large spaces to dedicate to a cutting garden alone, but a perennial border left with blank spaces will suffice quite nicely for cutting flowers to be brought inside.

A Cutting Garden Should be Informal

Combining flowers, fruits, herbs, and vegetables, the cutting garden (also called cut flower garden) style is the perfect solution for today's busy gardener who wants a gorgeous garden and also wants to be environmentally responsible. Instead of depending on pesticides and fertilizers to achieve a lush garden, the cutting garden style gets nature to work on your side with crop rotation, dense planting patterns, organic soil amendments, and a variety of plant types. The crop rotation principle applied to the cutting garden is a way in which the cutting garden style emphasizes a perfect approach for modern homeowners with small yards. If a water source is nearby, a small concrete fountain is always a nice touch or cascading water features.

The most important thing to remember about cutting gardens is that they are very unpretentious, catholic spaces, easily achievable, and certainly within everyone's grasp. They don't require big budgets since additional structures such as trellises or arbors are kept to a minimum and most of the plants can be grown inexpensively from seed. You won't need to employ a landscape architect, because that will be your job. You won't need to cut the grass every Saturday morning, because there won't be much. For at least half the year you won't have to pay high prices for organically grown cut flowers because you'll have your own. Best of all, you won't have to attend night classes on garden design, because there aren't any. Naturally, you'll look for pleasing color, height and texture combinations, but symmetry and balance are not paramount considerations.

The most successful cutting gardens are simple ones that work directly with nature. These are the gardens that are the healthiest and therefore the loveliest. Authentic cutting gardens were not contrived affairs, being the result of country artisans who were short on free time and whose aesthetic senses were closely linked to the countryside. It is this lack of sophistication that makes these plots tick, and the surest way to ruin a cutting garden is to try to make it formal or to try to "tidy things up" with boxwood hedging. Neatness has been thrown on the sacrificial altar in favor of unabashed exuberance and bounty. Cast stone fountains also need to be of simple design in the flower-cutting garden. A cast stone fountain that looks like a watering can is an example of informality.

The result of all this freedom and profusion is a great deal of flexibility for the plants themselves, not to mention the gardeners. In formal gardens, spring bulbs must be ripped out in order to make way for bedding plants, which reduces them to the status of pricey annuals. Bulbs can be stored and replanted. Strictly herbaceous borders planted heavily with bulbs and perennials offer no nooks and crannies for cut flowers. Neither of these approaches is characteristic of the cutting garden.

Evaluate What You've Got

The first consideration for making a cutting garden will be to review the existing permanent structures and plant material on your property. Rather than trying to hide garden sheds and garages, "tart them up" with climbing roses, trellises and window boxes full of cutting flowers such as nasturtiums, pansies and tiny zinnias. Plant colorful annuals, tender bulbs and sturdy perennials. Add a rustic bench or two and a wall fountain or concrete water fountain for an elegant touch. <bio>Elizabeth Jean is an outdoor gardening writer and frequent contributor to http://Garden-Fountains.com, a popular Internet destination for water fountains and garden statuary. </bio>

Garden tillers are really quite expensive considering how often the average gardener uses one. Garden tillers are exceptionally useful when creating a garden, especially if you are creating a garden where there is currently a lawn. Garden tillers are also excellent for tilling and cultivating a garden of annuals, though it can be very difficult to till or cultivate a garden full of perennials without tilling the plants as well. Garden tillers come in all different varieties, strengths, speeds, and sizes. The garden tiller that will match your needs will depend on your average usage. If you just purchased a home on three acres of land without any landscaping and you are ready to get busy with the dirt, then a large garden tiller with multiple settings is in order. If you own a town home in the city and have just a little patch of land to cultivate, then obviously you won't need the most powerful or the biggest garden tiller. Garden tillers will adequately do the job of a shovel, a hoe, and even a rake all in one motion. Garden tillers do require a certain amount of upper body strength to operate, especially the large garden tillers. As garden tillers do their job, obviously the dirt becomes quite loose, often a few feet below the earth's surface. This makes for a rather unsteady surface to walk on while trying to manage a large piece of equipment. This is something to keep in mind when purchasing a garden tiller. A slight individual may have a very difficult time with a large garden tiller. Some garden tillers come with a setting that allows for the neat and clean trimmings of the edges around the garden. This is a very handy feature in a garden tiller, especially if you are using it to create a brand new garden. Many of these garden tillers come with an available ground clearing feature, which allows the garden tiller to chew up and cultivate the top layer of weeds, small bushes, and even some tiny saplings. This is useful whether you are actually putting in a garden or you are simply fighting the annual weed battle with the woods behind your house. Purchasing a garden tiller is a fairly large financial commitment, although one that can save your back, your knees, and your very valuable time. Most people who own them believe that they were well worth the expense, even if they only use it once a year. The physical toll on the body that was relieved by the annual gardening is priceless. <bio>Lanny Hintz writes about http://www.flowergardennursery.com </bio>
