Angina is also called as angina pectoris and this gives you chest pains which are very painful and can cause lot of stress. This pain is mainly due to myocardial ischemia which means lack of daily quota of blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle. The reason for lagging behind in supply is mainly due blockages in one or more arteries of the heart.

This pain is mainly felt as an uncomfortable pressure, heaviness, squeezing of the muscles, tightening and the continuous ache. This pain is mainly felt in the breastbone and branches out in areas like the neck, jaw, thigh, arms, back, shoulder and sometimes in rare incidents may also occur in teeth.

The basic triggering factor for angina attacks is due to physical exertion. Even a simple task like walking, climbing stairs, jogging, and lifting things can get you angina attacks. There are other factors too such as stress, mental pressure and tension, being exposed to extreme cold or heat temperatures, consumption of alcohol as well as smoking.

Complains of indigestion, heartburn, weakness, nausea, shortness in breath and cramps are also some signs of angina. After exertion or your meals the demand for oxygen increases which is not fulfilled due to the narrowed arteries leading to an angina.

These attacks can last from 1 to 15 minutes which can be palliated by taking rest or by taking some medication. Sometimes these pains just leave as they had come, as the muscles get relaxed and supply of blood becomes easy. This kind of angina is called as stable angina. The other type of angina which changes its normal approach is called unstable angina and these are ones from which we should be worried about. This kind of angina is the first sign of heart attack.

Remedial measures for Angina

- Having a proper diet is very important.

-Being a vegetarian would help as most of the meat products have high cholesterol which risks your heart

- You can have the cantaloupe juice everyday, which contains adesnosine for thinning the blood. This would help in proper supply to the heart muscle

-Raise your bed level or keep your head raised as these would help in reducing your angina attacks at night

-Instead of taking a medicine you can keep your foot down on the floor as this would work in the same fashion like one of those medications

-Remain fit by avoiding exertion of any type

-Intake of more fresh fruits and vegetables

-Avoid oily and spicy food About The Author: Sharon Hopkins manages home remedies sites such as http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com to help you in your daily life with simple and easy home care remedies. It is one of the main factors causing the heart attack itself. A patient suffering from the Coronary Artery Disease has arteries which grow both narrow and hard. As a result the heart does not get the required amount of blood. The Coronary Artery Disease can also cause

a)Angina Angina is nothing but the discomfort experienced by the heart when it does not get sufficient blood. This leads to the chest pain. This chest pain is very often like squeezing in the chest, rarely a pain is experienced in the back, neck, arms, shoulders or jaws also. It can also cause an upset in the stomach or lead to indigestion. Angina does not actually mean heart attack but surely does mean that thee is a likelihood of a heart attack.

b)Heart attack Occurrence of the heart attack is due to the fact when the artery is completely or even severely blocked. This block extend for about a period of twenty minutes to achieve heart attack.

2.The Heart Failure The main reason as to why the heart fails is due to the fact that the heart loses its ability to pump blood to the body as in normal cases. This means that the organs do not receive sufficient amount of blood. It also does not mean that heart has completely stopped.

Certain signs of the failure of the heart include.

a)There exists a swelling in the ankle, the feet, and the legs. b)There is a decrease in the duration of breath. c)Feeling of being extremely tired. In this discussion there is the factor which cause the heart disease have been discussed. The two of the most famous types of the heart diseases also have been discussed. <bio>Justin foss is the proud owner of the site http://www.mymedicenter.com where he spends most of his time to make it better. </bio>

"Sometimes it's impossible to tell the difference between the symptoms of heartburn, angina and heart attack," cautioned Prediman K. (P.K.) Shah, M.D., director of the Division of Cardiology and the Atherosclerosis Research Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. "There are some useful pointers that might help a person know whether they're having a heart attack or not, but when in doubt, check it out."

Knowing your risk factors that may predispose you to a heart attack is the most important factor to keep in mind. They will determine whether you 'brush over' the symptoms or take them seriously.

Shah said: "If you smoke, have diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, are overweight or have a strong family history of heart disease and have any symptom related to the chest or heart, you should be suspicious." Heart attack symptoms include the sudden onset of tightness, pressure, squeezing, burning, or discomfort in the chest, throat, neck or either arm. You should be especially suspicious if these symptoms are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sweating, shortness of breath or a fainting sensation, Shah warned. "That's when a bell should ring telling you that these symptoms may be indicating a heart attack."

Angina is the most often seen symptom of coronary heart disease. Angina is pain in the chest or discomfort that occurs when the heart muscles do not receive enough blood. The pain occur in the shoulders, arms, neck, jaw and/or back. Angina may feel like indigestion.

"Generally we recommend that if you think you're having a heart attack, call 9-1-1," said Shah. "It's the safest thing to do. We tell people to err on the side of caution and overreact instead of under react."

The symptoms of reflux or heartburn can look like a heart attack. If you've had heartburn all your life and the symptoms you're experiencing are identical to those you've had before then you're probably experiencing heartburn and not a heart attack. But if the symptoms are accompanied by feeling light-headed or sweaty, "then that type of heartburn should be taken more seriously," Shah said. "It could signal that you've having a heart attack."

A heart attack is caused when the supply of blood to the heart muscle is reduced or stopped. This happens when the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart become blocked. Death or disability is dependent on the percentage of the heart muscle is damaged.

There is no way to predict the time of the day when a heart attack may occur, or the circumstances that may cause a heart attack. A heart attack can strike in the middle of the night, after a meal, in the middle of a rest period, during or after sexual activity or physical activity.

"Obviously, if you've been diagnosed with coronary heart disease, then any of these symptoms should ring a loud bell," said Shah.

Shah emphasized that many types of heart disease that he describes as different "flavors" do not produce pain but are as life-threatening as a typical heart attack.

A regular check-up by a physician when you reach middle age (between 45 and 50) or before beginning a heavy exercise program is essential, he said. "Certain heart conditions can remain hidden and put persons at risk for sudden death. It's important to point out that heart disease isn't just one flavor - there are many different flavors." <bio>Ethan Miller advises on improving your heath and reducing pain from his web site at http://www.heartpatrol.com

He invites you to get his FREE health guide http://www.lowcarbrescue.com </bio>

Lower cholesterol levels are something everyone needs to be concerned with. For some people it is easier to do than for others. It may be necessary at least for a short time to take prescription medication to get your cholesterol under control. Unfortunately, cholesterol prescription medication can have some pretty serious side effects. That's why everyone should know how to lower cholesterol naturally. It may help prevent the need for prescription drugs and may even be able to get you off them if you take them now. Of course when it comes to such serious matters as elevated LDL, you should follow the advice of your physician as to how to treat it.

It doesn't really matter how healthy you appear or feel, if you have elevated LDL which stands for low density lipoprotein or 'bad cholesterol', then you are at increased risk for coronary artery disease. You should begin to find ways to lower cholesterol naturally before your levels get too high.

Unfortunately, all too often, a person is not even aware they have elevated LDL in the blood stream until it is too late. A possible first symptom would be angina which is chest pain caused by lack of oxygen going to the heart. Angina can also be linked with other conditions but should never be taken lightly. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry when it comes to any type of chest pains. And if you experience angina in combination with other symptoms such as dizziness, fast heart rate, pain radiating in one or both arms, or a heavy pressure in the chest, seek medical attention immediately.

There are many things which can lead to elevated levels of LDL in your blood stream. Some things you can't control such as heredity and gender. But other causative factors you can control such as weight, exercise, and smoking.

Middle aged people who are overweight are particularly prone to health problems and high cholesterol is just one of them. The risk can be greatly reduced by bringing the weight to a more normal level through diet and exercise. Diet and exercise are two of the most important and beneficial methods to lower cholesterol naturally.

It may be necessary to go on a specific low cholesterol diet if you want to lower cholesterol naturally. Oatmeal has gained a reputation as a good food to eat on a low cholesterol diet and rightly so. It is high in fiber and experts say the fiber absorbs excess cholesterol from the liver and then excretes it.

Garlic is another popular food used to lower cholesterol naturally. Studies have indicated that sufficient amounts of garlic on a daily basis can lessen the risk of heart disease.

The three most important things you can to lower cholesterol naturally include eating the proper diet, getting plenty of exercise on a daily basis, and living a healthy lifestyle. <bio>Jane Wyvern is an established freelance writer.
Calcium is very important to the human body especially to women who have given birth. It is responsible for making the bones and teeth strong. Nevertheless, a bone with high calcium content can stand the heavy stress that is given by work done by a person.

However, calcium can also be harmful to human when it is absorbed by organs not needing it. It may cause paralysis, other health complication or even death. That can happen when calcium goes into the heart's muscle. Calcium can make the muscle of the heart to contract and can narrow the arteries which may later be able to cause heart attack or stroke.

The pharmaceutical society developed a drug that can block the entry of the calcium to the heart and its components. The drug is commonly known as calcium channel blocker. There are different calcium channel blockers and some of them are dihydropyridine, phenylalkylamine and benzothiazepine.

The following questions may be asked to totally know Calcium Channel Blockers:

What are Calcium Channel Blockers?

They are drugs formulated to block calcium entrance to the heart and its components. It prevents calcium to penetrate the heart because calcium can cause complications in the heart that may lead to heart attack and other health problems. Calcium channel blockers may lower angina (the pain experienced by a person due to low oxygen intake in the heart carried by the blood) in the heart. It can lower angina by means of dilating the arteries and lowering the pressure in the arteries to allow more oxygen intake. It can also work by means of lowering the pressure in the heart, causing the latter to pump blood easily causing it to require less oxygen.

What are the usages Calcium Channel Blockers?

Primarily, calcium channel blockers are used to prevent the entry of calcium to the heart. It is specifically used to treat angina, high blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms. Calcium channel blockers are also used by cardiologists as beta-blocking drugs for heart attack patients.

What are the side-effects of the Calcium Channel Blockers?

Most medicines have side effects and can cause negative reactions in the human body. A person treated with calcium channel blocker may experience constipation, headache, edema or the swelling of the legs, nausea, dizziness and drowsiness. A person may also experience low blood pressure due to high concentration of the medicine to lower high blood pressure.

Those are the basic things to know about calcium channel blockers. Do not be afraid of the side-effects of the medicine because they are still tolerable. When cure is assumed, side-effects are neglected. <bio>This content is provided by Low Jeremy.
All of our muscles need a continuous supply of oxygen carried by the blood and the heart is no exception. However, due to diet, age, and other factors such as high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking, our coronary arteries may become smaller or clogged. When the blood flow to the heart is restricted, it results in coronary heart disease, sometimes known as CHD. Angina occurs when not enough blood carrying oxygen can get through to the heart. This often causes a pain in the left arm or chest. When the blood flow is cut off completely, a heart attack occurs. Any part of the heart that is not receiving the oxygen it needs begins to die and permanent damage to the muscle can be done. What are the symptoms of coronary heart disease?

Some people may not experience any symptoms. Others may feel short of breath or experience a mild discomfort in their chest area. Still others suffering from coronary heart disease experience a constant chest pain that may hinder their everyday activities.

Those that suffer from angina say they feel a pressure or heaviness on their chest. This can sometimes include a burning sensation or they may say it feels like their chest is being squeezed. Other symptoms associated with coronary heart disease include dizziness, queasiness, shortness of breath, and can include heart palpitations. Pain may spread to their neck, jaw, or arms.

If you suffer from angina, the doctor will try to diagnose what type you have -- stable or unstable. Just like the names, stable angina tends to occur at certain times such as after you exert yourself, after a large meal, or when you get upset. The pain lasts between one and five minutes and usually resting helps alleviate the symptoms. If you have no pattern as to when you experience the pain, it is known as unstable angina. This is the more severe type of the two.

Once the doctor establishes that you do have coronary heart disease, he may ask you to take some tests to see to what damage has been done. One test he may order is the electrocardiogram (ECG). This will show him the electrical activity of the heart. A stress test is normally done on a treadmill. This forces the heart to work harder, a time when problems often show up. Your blood pressure and heart rate will also be monitored while taking the stress test. A nuclear scanning involves the doctor inserting a small amount of radioactive material into your vein. He can then see damage done by using a scanning camera. Finally, a coronary angiography is a test where a catheter is inserted into an artery (usually in your arm or leg) and it films the heart while it pumps. The picture it takes is known as an angiogram.

What is the treatment for coronary heart disease?

That depends on the severity. If it is less severe, the doctor will probably suggest lifestyle changes. Many people do not care for this treatment because it involves giving up things they love. You will need to change your diet so it is lower in fat and cholesterol. You will also need to start on an exercise regiment as well. Even a small amount of exercise can lower your risks of a heart attack. Smokers can drastically reduce their chances of a heart attack when they quit smoking. Even if you have already suffered from one heart attack, stopping smoking can prevent another.

Those with more severe cases of coronary heart disease may need to undergo surgery. Coronary angioplasty is one type of surgery for coronary heart disease. Often referred to as balloon angioplasty, this involves a catheter going through the artery that is blocked. The balloon on the end is inflated to help open up the artery. If the artery cannot be opened, you will need a coronary artery bypass operation. In this, the surgeon removes a blood vessel from another part of the body and graphs it onto the blocked artery. The blood is then able to go around the blockage by way of this new vessel. Even after having these surgeries, you will be asked to change your lifestyle.

If you experience any type of chest pain, it is imperative that you visit your doctor to get a checkup. Chances may be it is nothing life threatening, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. <bio>Dr. Beth Paxton is a general health practictioner providing helpful information for families and patients with Heart Disease. http://www.doctors-advice.com/heart-disease/ </bio>

When the heart becomes "starved for oxygen", heart disease and heart attacks occur. This happens when fatty deposits stick to the small walls of the veins and arteries surrounding our heart. Unfortunately, the older we get, the smaller these veins become, and the easier it is to develop heart disease. However, there are signs and preventive measures.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) does not always cause a heart attack. You may have severe CAD without even having any chest pain. However, any of these symptoms should be reported to a doctor because they could be a sign of CAD:

Chest pain Shortness of breath Palpitations (an irregular heartbeat, skipped beats, or a "flip-flop" feeling in your chest Fast or racing heartbeat Weakness Dizziness Nausea Sweating (not due to exercise)

Angina (chest pain) has been described as an "uncomfortable feeling" usually just below the breastbone. But there are other places that the pain of angina can be felt as well: the left shoulder (because your heart is on the left side of your body), arms, neck, throat, jaw or even your back. Angina often resembles heartburn or indigestion. If you have these symptoms for more than 15 minutes, please seek emergency treatment.

If you have not had any symptoms and have not had a heart attack, you can work on preventive measures to reduce the risk of heart disease:

and#61607;If you smoke, stop! This goes for all types of smokers, not just cigarette smokers. We've all heard and seen the commercials about lower cholesterol. It restricts the oxygen and blood flow to the heart and can thus cause a heart attack or heart disease. Everyone over the age of 30 should be screened. If you have a history of heart disease in your family, you should stay in touch with your medical practitioner as to how often you should be screened.

and#61607;Raise HDL! HDL is the "good" cholesterol that takes the "bad" cholesterol from the arteries to the liver, where it is removed from the bloodstream.

and#61607;Calm down. As your heart beats, force is applied in your arteries. This force is your blood pressure. Higher blood pressure means harder working heart and kidneys. Harder working heart and kidneys mean higher risk of heart disease.

and#61607;Slim down. Excess weight means a harder working heart. As stated above, we know that a harder working heart means higher risk of heart disease. In fact, too much weight can cause your internal organs to perform differently.

and#61607;Exercise. You don't have to run marathons to maintain a healthy heart exercise regimen. Any exercise that raises your heart rate for at least 30 minutes a day at least 3 days a week is enough to gain "heart" benefits.

and#61607;Eat right. This statement is pretty self-explanatory. We all know exactly what we should eat. The problem is doing it.

and#61607;Stressed? Find safe ways to reduce your stress levels such as walking or other light exercises, because stress can also cause the heart to work harder...

and#61607;Limit alcohol consumption.

Beyond these preventive measures, you should always consult your physician if you have any concerns about your heart health. <bio>Read more Health related articles at: http://www.health-mag.com </bio>

Not only are chocolates pleasurable and sinfully delicious, they also stimulate your mind and give you a boost of energy especially when you're on the go. Eating a chocolate a day can have wonderful benefits for your mind and your well-being, as longs as you watch your over-all calorie and sugar intake for the day. Chocolates contain various ingredients that affect your brain and body chemistry. Some people even attest to its potency as an aphrodisiac and is said to elevate the mood. Some of the main ingredients contained in chocolates that stimulate the senses include sugar, theobromine, phenethylamine, and tryptophan.

Sugar High

The most obvious stimulating property of chocolate is sugar, a basic food carbohydrate that gives a jolt of energy to the body, but is also the culprit for chocolate's sinfulness and notoriety when it comes to health and nutrition. For an immediate high, sugar is a friend, but its boost will wear out as fast as you got it. Bingeing on sugar in the long run can make you feel sluggish and worse off in the first place. Take note that too much sugar can cause tooth decay, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Luckily, there are sugar free chocolates that taste just as yummy such as diabetic chocolates.

Theobromine's Various Health Benefits

Theobromine is the bitter alkaloid in chocolates, or more aptly, in the cacao plant, and is mainly responsible for chocolate's mood-elevating effects. Theobromine is somewhat similar to caffeine in its chemical components and effects, but to a lesser degree. Dark chocolate contains more theobromine than white chocolate, which only contains trace amounts of this compound. Cocoa powder, sold in groceries, contain an average of 108mg of theobromine per 5g (about a tablespoon) of powder, roughly 2.16%. Concentrated cocoa can have at least 10% theobromine while chocolates in general can contain 0.5% to 2.7%. Throughout history, theobromine has been used to treat foredema, degenerative angina, and syphilitic angina attacks, as published in the Principles of Medical Treatment. It was also used to treat or aid circulatory ailments and problems such as hypertension, vascular diseases, angina pectoris, and arteriosclerosis. Today, theobromine is used as a diuretic, heart stimulant, and as a vasolidator (for widening blood vessels). There are also studies being made on the possible anti-cancer properties of theobromine.

Phenethylamine, the "Love Chemical"

Phenylethylamine is known to increase the brain's dopamine level, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in countering depression. Also called the "love chemical," low level of phenylethylamine can lead to attention deficit disorder and even depression. While dark and milk chocolates are loaded with phenylethylamine, it is quickly metabolized by the enzyme monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) and may not reach the brain in significant concentrations.

Tryptophan

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and is a biochemical precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in modulating and controlling anger, moods, body temperature, sleep, aggression, appetite, sexuality, and metabolism. It is also a precursor to Niacin, most commonly known as the vitamin B3, essential to the body's metabolism and DNA repair. Tryptophan is an essential part of a healthy diet and act as building blocks for protein biosynthesis.<bio>Chris Alleny writes about various subjects including food.
Sometimes, you can treat high blood pressure with a simple change of diet, exercise and lifestyle. Other cases are not so simple to resolve, and the doctor may prescribe a high blood pressure medication. The particular medication will depend on other key factors, such as the severity of your high blood pressure condition. It would also depend on any other existing medical conditions.

Know Your Medications

There are many aspects of blood pressure medications to consider for treating the condition. While your doctor is the one who will decide the treatment, you should have some knowledge about the various medications. For example, how they react or interact with other conditions or medications. Visiting the local pharmacy can help answer questions or concerns before approaching your doctor, but information is the key.

While most people treated for blood pressure don't need other medications for another medical condition, some do. When taking more than one blood pressure medication, it's important to make sure those medications would not conflict with one another other. Also, let your doctor know what other medications you are taking before he prescribes a particular one for you.

Other Health Problems

If you have high blood pressure and have no other ailments, the doctor will more than likely prescribe a blood pressure medication such as thiazide-type diuretics. This medication suits those without other medical problems. Thiazide-type diuretics have been proven to not only lower blood pressure, but also to prevent heart attacks and strokes. They are less expensive than other high blood pressure drugs. And these diuretics are the most common of first drugs prescribed to treat high blood pressure. You only need to take most of these medications once a day.

Other blood pressure medication such as a beta-blocker can reduce risk of strokes or heart attacks. They help protect hearts weakened by coronary artery disease. Similarly, enzyme inhibitors help to protect the kidneys for those suffering from diabetes and kidney insufficiency as well. Enzyme inhibitors also protect the heart after a major heart attack or if you have congestive heart failure.

Calcium channel blockers help people suffering from angina. Similarly, alpha-blockers improve blood levels of certain fats. For those suffering from other medical conditions, such as diabetes or congestive heart failure or angina, the doctor will most likely prescribe a beta-blocker. Doctors will also consider the age of the patient. Often, medications in seniors react differently than in younger and more healthy patients.

What are the side effects?

As with any blood pressure medication, side effects can occur. They include, but are not limited to, increased need to urinate, difficulty sleeping and dizziness. Other side effects can be some sexual dysfunction in men, nasal stuffiness or headaches.

Many people use blood pressure medication and never experience these side effects, so don't let the fear of them stop you from taking the medication. Work with your doctor to find the right medication with the least amount of side effects for your specific condition. No matter which blood pressure medication the doctor prescribes, it is important to follow instructions to the letter. <bio>Get the latest in blood pressure medication know how from the only true source at http://www.bloodpressurefile.com.
With heart disease being the number one cause of death in Americans and high blood pressure being the "silent killer," high homocysteine levels are considered by most researchers to be as dangerous as high cholesterol levels. An aging heart is proven to be less efficient and much more likely to develop disease. Thankfully, certain nutrients and specialty compounds may help to promote healthy blood pressure, homocysteine levels and heart function, which ultimately exert a positive impact on heart disease.

One of the most significant remedies in traditional medicine is Dansheng, which has historically been associated with the circulatory and cardiovascular systems consequently, leaving it to be recommended for conditions surrounding the blood and heart. Many studies have shown that dansheng dilated coronary arteries, increased coronary blood flow, and scavenged free radicals in ischemic diseases, which reduce the cellular damage from ischemia and improve heart conditions. Studies have proven that dansheng can improve the ischemic state of the myocardium by dilating the coronary vessels and, in turn, decreasing serum lipid peroxides and increasing levels of SOD in patients with coronary heart disease.

These effects could potentially be associated with dansheng's ability to inhibit platelet aggregation, reduce blood viscosity, improve myocardial ischemia, and protect the cytomembrane. Dansheng has even been shown to effectively improve and protect myocardial ischemia in patients with coronary heart disease who are undergoing non-heart surgery.

Hawthorn has traditionally been used as a cardiac tonic, and current used for it include treatment of angina, hypertension, arrhythmias, and congestive heart failure. Research has shown that it may improve cardiac muscular contractions and blood flow in coronary arteries. The use of hawthorn has been validated by Germany's Commission E, in which it was reported that hawthorn improves subjective findings as well as increases heart work tolerance, and decreases blood pressure/heart rate. Similarly, clinical research has confirmed that hawthorn is beneficial in treating mild congestive heart failure. Regarding angina, hawthorn extract, when taken three times per day, improves heart function and exercise tolerance in angina patients.

Garlic has also shown significant contributions toward cardiovascular health. Garlic's lipid-lowering effects, which have been proven in six randomized, double blind studies. Garlic also has an anti-hypertensive effect, which was proven in two randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled studies. A review and meta-analysis of randomized trials was conducted to determine the effects of garlic on blood pressure. Of seven trials comparing the effects of garlic to a placebo, three demonstrated a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure and four in diastolic blood pressure.

Garlic has also been shown to have a positive impact on platelet function. Garlic's ability to prevent and possibly reverse atherosclerosis was tested in one of the longest clinical trials on garlic to date. After four years, subjects experienced an average reduction in plaque volume of about 2.6 percent, while the placebo group increased in plaque volume by 15.6 percent. This allowed researchers to conclude that garlic has a preventative and potentially curative role in arteriosclerosis therapy.

Finally, cayenne also has a history of traditional use for its ability to simulate circulation. Traditionally used as a catalyst herb in herbal combination formulas, cayenne's stimulant effects sped up circulation and thus aid in absorption. This herb increased absorption ability is believed to be due to the fact that cayenne can draw blood to the intestinal walls aiding in food digestion and absorption in the intestinal tract. Whether you choose dansheng, hawthorn berry, garlic, or cayenne in single or herbal combination, you can go wrong by choosing natural herbal supplements to help restore heart function and prevent heart disease.<bio>More information on cayenne and hawthorn berry is available at VitaNet ®, LLC Health Food Store. http://vitanetonline.com/</bio>

Not only has there been an increase in information about risks, symptoms, and causes. There has also been an increase in the number of treatment options available for various types of heart disease.

One treatment we now have for many coronary heart disease patients is the stent. Questions remain about the stent, though.

1. Are stents effective in heart disease? 2. Are stents effective in heart disease long term? 3. Are stents more effective in heart disease than other treatments?

What a Stent Is

A stent is a tiny tube made of wire metal mesh. This tube is inserted into a partially blocked artery to prop it open and allow blood to flow more freely.

How a Stent Is Inserted

Surgery is not needed to insert a stent for heart disease. A stent is usually placed during angioplasty. In angioplasty without a stent, a small balloon at the tip of a catheter is inserted into an artery (usually in the groin) and inflated to force open a blocked area inside the artery. If the physician believes the balloon is insufficient, and a stent is needed, the stent is collapsed to a small diameter and put over the balloon catheter. The doctor then moves the stent and balloon up the artery to the blocked section. The balloon is inflated, and as it inflates, it makes the stent expand. The expanded stent is locked in place, and forms a supportive framework that holds the artery open. The balloon and catheter are removed.

Time a Stent Remains in Place

A stent is permanent. It is intended to remain in the artery, holding it open. The expectation is that it will improve blood flow to the heart and relieve heart disease symptoms for years.

Over those years, though, are stents effective in heart disease treatment? Or do they present potential problems?

Effectiveness of Stents

Within a few weeks of the time a stent is inserted, the artery's inner lining begins to grow over the metal surface of the tiny tube. This growth tends to block the artery again. Additional plaque may also build. When this happens, the artery closes at the same place, and heart disease symptoms return. The most notable symptom is probably chest pain.

In an effort to avoid this growth, pharmaceutical companies developed a new stent to replace the bare metal stent. The new stent is coated with drugs that release slowly. The drugs help keep the artery from closing again. In either case, the patient must take anti-clotting medications, but it is hoped that the newer stents may be effective long term.

Stents Versus Other Treatments

The final question is, of course: are stents more effective in heart disease than other treatments? Many prescription medications have been developed for the treatment of coronary heart disease. Suppose a patient opted to forego the stent and rely solely on medications. What then?

A landmark study published in March 2007 showed that, after 5 years, heart disease patients who had stable angina, and were treated only with prescription medications and aspirin, did just as well as those who had a stent placed in an affected artery. They survived at the same rate. Those with stent placement had more immediate relief from angina pain, but that playing field leveled over time.

The study discovered that more than half of heart disease patients who get angioplasties - 1 million plus annually - have stable heart disease. That means they would do just as well with medications as they would with stents. The authors of the study said that as many as 85 percent of all stents placed are unnecessary. In the U.S., the cost per patient of placing unnecessary stents is between $30,000 and $40,000.

Stents are effective in heart disease treatment, but medication is just as effective in patients with stable angina.

The Decision Maker

The decision maker is usually an interventional cardiologist. An interventional cardiologist is the one who performs angiography, the most prevalent test to see if an artery is blocked. He or she will require the patient's written permission, prior to angiography, to insert a stent immediately if blockage is found. In other words, the interventional cardiologist will be the decision maker for the heart disease patient.

The patient has no opportunity to discuss the severity of the blockage or the possibility of treatment other than a stent. Unfortunately, interventional cardiologists are showing signs of reluctance to give up stents. The patient will have to make a firm decision before angiography, and withhold permission if treatment with medication is preferred.

Disclaimer: The author is not a physician, and shares this research for educational purposes only. Please ask your physician about whether stents are effective in heart disease. <bio>=A92007, Anna Hart.
To be told you have "heart disease" can strike fear into anyone hearing it for the first time, however it's not as bad as it sounds.

In this article I am going to explain some of the terms, causes and remedies associated with heart disease.

Heart disease is a general term used to describe several different conditions, all of which are potentially fatal, but are also treatable and/or preventable. Heart disease is primarily a disease of lifestyle, and is largely preventable through risk factor awareness and modification.

However it is a serious condition and if ignored it is a major cause for heart attacks (myocardial infarction), congestive heart failure, angina pectoris, stroke, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), and ischemia (reduced blood flow). The most common form of heart disease is coronary heart disease, also known as coronary artery disease

Coronary

Coronary artery disease is the most common form of heart disease, it is caused by a narrowing or clogging of the coronary arteries that supply the heart with oxygen and nutrients.

Coronary artery disease and the resulting reduced blood flow to the heart muscle can lead to other heart problems, such as chest pain (angina) and heart attacks (myocardial infarction).

The risk of coronary heart disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control those adverse factors that put people at greater risk for heart disease and heart attacks.

Cholesterol

If you have too much cholesterol in your bloodstream, the excess is deposited in arteries, including the coronary arteries, where it contributes to the narrowing and blockages that cause the signs and symptoms of heart disease.

High levels of the wrong type of cholesterol (LDL) can be life threatening especially because this type of cholesterol has the capability to choke the arteries and thus cause a heart attack.

What happens is that the levels of the lipoprotein, which is made in the liver and in cells lining blood vessels, rise with things that make heart disease more likely, like smoking, obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Conversely the levels fall when patients stop smoking, lose weight and get their cholesterol and diabetes under control.

Cholesterol levels should be less than 5.5. If your cholesterol level is 6.5 mmol/L or greater your risk of heart disease is about 4 times greater than that of a person with a cholesterol level of 4 mmol/L.

The best defense against high cholesterol is simply controlling the risk factors that could lead to coronary artery disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and being overweight.

Regular aerobic activities have a good effect on blood vessels and cholesterol.

Dietary aids to lowering cholesterol

• reduce cheese intake and/or substitute low fat varieties
• choose reduced fat milks
• substitute polyunsaturated margarine for butter
• choose lean cuts of meat and remove all visible fat
• eat skinless chicken, fish or beans
• beware of pies, pasties, fish and chips and commercial cakes (hidden fat)
• make cakes at home with polyunsaturated fat, cook chips with polyunsaturated or mono unsaturated oil
• lose weight if overweight.

High blood pressure also causes many other types of cardiovascular disease, such as stroke and heart failure.

Arteries

Coronary artery diseases are diseases of the arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood. If you suffer from CAD it generally means that blood flow through the coronary arteries has become obstructed, reducing blood flow to the heart muscle.

Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients, which are carried to it by the blood in the coronary arteries.
Critical illness insurance can be a Godsend for anyone who would suffer financially if they were to be diagnosed with a critical illness such as cancer, a heart attack or stroke. If something such as this should happen, then the bills would soon mount up, bills including your mortgage, your medical bills if any, taking care of your family and the future - these all come into play.

Critical illness cover gives you a tax-free lump sum payment that can be used as you wish. Some people pay off their mortgage, others use it to pay for private medical treatment or put it in the bank to allow them to carry on paying their every day bills along with making any changes that might have to be made to their home to accommodate their illness.

The illnesses covered by this policy varies from company to company as well as how much you pay for your policy. There are many types of policy available and the level of cover will determine how much you pay for the insurance and also what is included in the cover. However the policy can be tailored to some extent, with some companies offering benefits for what you can afford to pay.

It is imperative that you fully understand critical insurance policies, as with any type of insurance there are many exclusions within them. Policies will only pay out for the conditions which are listed within them and these usually include heart attack, stroke, any major transplant of an organ, cancer, coronary heart by pass and multiple sclerosis.

However even with these being outlined within the policy it still doesn't mean that it is cut and dry, for example with some insurers you have to have proof that your heart problems are not such as angina, as this is excluded from some policies. So always make sure that you read the small print and what is and is not covered by the policy.

Usually there will be a waiting period before you can make a claim on a policy and a critical insurance policy can usually be taken out between the ages of 17 and 70. <bio>David Thomson is Chief Executive of BestDealInsurance (http://www.bestdealinsurance.co.uk) an independent specialist broker dedicated to providing their clients with the best deal on their home, motor and life insurance. </bio>

Is ongoing chest pain a sign of heart failure? Chest pains of any type can be frightening. You may think you are having a heart attack. The thought that it might be heart attack can increase chest pains. You should see a doctor immediately to be sure.

Supposing, though, that you have seen a doctor about your ongoing chest pain. You were not having a heart attack. Your doctor sent you home, but the chest pains continue to come and go.

Is ongoing chest pain a sign of heart failure that the doctor might miss?

Possible Reasons for Ongoing Chest Pains

Chest pains are often, but not always heart related. The nerves flowing from the spinal column can echo pain, making us think one part of the body hurts when the problem is actually in another part. Once we are convinced that chest pains relate to the heart, it can be difficult to find the true source of the problem. Physicians are frequently faced with this dilemma. The chest pain is not "all in your head". It is real pain. It may not relate to the heart, however, no matter how much your head tells you it does.

We do not have space here to list every cause of chest pain, but we can give examples. Assuming you have already undergone physical examination for your chest pains, consider the following. You will want to discuss your chest pain with a qualified, licensed physician.

* Anxiety: Chest pains often are caused by anxiety. Your body responds to stressors by preparing for fight or flight. However, you do neither. Instead, you continue the anxious state of preparation. Your body continues to pour forth chemicals to help you fight or flee. This process can trigger ongoing chest pain. If this is true in your case, the ongoing chest pain is not a sign of heart failure. It is your body's warning that you need to reduce anxiety.

* Angina pectoris: Chest pains may indicate blocked arteries. Do you get the chest pains when you engage in physical activities, try to handle emotional stress, or endure extreme temperatures? Do the chest pains feel like pressure under the breastbone? If so, ask your doctor to check for angina.

* Costochondritis: This cause of chest pains is really an inflammation of the joints in your chest. Inflammation where ribs and breastbone connect may cause chest pain along the edges of your breastbone. Your pain may get worse when you cough or take a deep breath. An anti-inflammatory medicine or heat may relieve the pain. This problem usually goes away on its own. Ask your doctor about it.

* Periconditis: Chest pains may also be caused by another type of inflammation - inflammation of the heart lining.

* Musculoskeletal: Ongoing chest pain may be a matter of muscle strain. Perhaps you twisted or lifted in such a way as to pull a chest muscle. This type of ongoing chest pain hurts when you touch the chest.

* Gall Bladder: A gall bladder attack can cause excruciating chest pain. This can stop and start many times. It is related to eating, however, and not to the heart.

* Acid reflux: A common cause of ongoing chest pain is acid reflux, GERD, or heartburn. This feels like the heart is in pain. It can come and go frequently. Ask your doctor if your ongoing chest pain may be related to your digestive system.

Make the Connection

Is your ongoing chest pain a sign of heart failure? It might be =96 if you have other symptoms of heart failure. Do you have trouble breathing? Do you become uncomfortable when lying flat because you feel short of breath? Are your legs and arms swollen with excess fluid? Have you gained weight from water retention? Do you feel like you have indigestion, and you would rather not eat because of it?

With your ongoing chest pain, do you feel tired, weak, and not able to do the physical things you usually do? Are you restless and confused? Does it seem that your attention span has grown shorter and your memory is failing?

These are some, but not all, of the symptoms that accompany chest pain if you are experiencing heart failure.

Helpful Tip

Your doctor will probably be able to make a tentative diagnosis of heart failure if you have swelling and are short of breath. He or she will listen to your chest, tap the chest, and even take a chest X-ray. If your doctor suspects heart failure, other tests will be ordered.

Many therapies can help ease your heart's workload. If your chest pains are caused by heart failure, your physician can help.

CAUTION: The information presented here is for general educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for medical advice. You should not rely on this information to make health decisions. Consult your family doctor about your personal condition. <bio>=A92007, Anna Hart.
Generic Cialis is reasonable and easy on the pocket supplement to the original treatment for erectile dysfunction which is known as Cialis. Generic Cialis contains the same active ingredient Tadalafil which is being used in the Branded drug. Manufacturing of this drug is completely in accordance with the standards set by International Pharmacies and FDA. Generic version of Cialis works as effectively as Cialis or even quicker with much better results. Effect of the drug is much longer than the other pills which are available in the market with a much higher success ratio.

The generic version of Cialis is same as the branded drug in terms of purity, quality, strength, and dosage. The working is quite effective and convenient, as you don't have to be dependent on time. You can choose your moment; you don't have to be dependent on a moment.

Generic Cialis has the tendency to build up in your body; the levels of tadalafil can start increasing on a steady basis. The drug doesn't cause an erection but makes the body respond to stimulation.

What Is It Used For?

ED is a condition where the penis does not harden and expand when a man is sexually excited, or when he cannot keep an erection. A man who has trouble getting or keeping an erection should see his doctor for help if the condition bothers him. This medicine may help a man with ED get and keep an erection when he is sexually excited.

How Is It Works?

When a man is sexually stimulated, his body's normal physical response is to increase blood flow to his penis. This results in an erection. Tadalafil helps increase blood flow to the penis and may help men with ED get and keep an erection satisfactory for sexual activity. Once a man has completed sexual activity, blood flow to his penis decreases, and his erection goes away.

How Is It Used?

Take CIALIS in 10mg dose (you can split a 20mg tablet to two 10mg pcs). For most men the recommended starting dose is 10 mg. This medicine should NOT be taken more than once a day. Some men can only take a low dose or this medicine because of medical condtions or medicines that they take.

Are There Possible Side Effects?

Like with VIAGRA and LEVITRA, the most common side effects with this medicine are: headache, flushing, stuffy or runny nose, indigestion, upset stomach, dizziness. These side effects usually go away after a few hours. Talk to your doctor if these side effects persist. This medicine may uncommonly cause: an erection that won't go away (priaprism), changes in vision such as seeing a blue tinge to objects or having difficulty telling the difference between the colors blue and green. If you experience other bothersome side effects, contact your health care provider.

What special precautions should I follow? Do not take this medicine if you:

Take any medicines called "nitrates." Nitrates are commonly used to treat angina. Angina is a symptom of heart disease and can cause pain in your chest, jaw, or down your arm.

Use recreational drugs called "poppers" like amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate o take medicines called "alpha blockers." Alpha blockers are sometimes prescribed for prostate problems or high blood pressure. If Cialis is taken with alpha blockers, your blood pressure could suddenly drop to an unsafe level. You could get dizzy and faint.

Are allergic to tadalafil, or any of its ingredients.

You have been told by your healthcare provider to not have sexual activity because of health problems. Sexual activity can put an extra strain on your heart, especially if your heart is already weak from a heart attack or heart disease.

Do NOT change your dose of this medicine without talking to your doctor.

Do NOT DRINK alcohol to excess when taking this medicine (for example, 5 glasses of wine or 5 shots of whiskey). When taken in excess, alcohol can increase your chances of getting a headache or getting dizzy, increasing your heart rate, or lowering your blood pressure.

What About Interactions With Other Drugs?

Before taking any new medications, by prescription or over-the-counter, including supplements, talk to your doctor.

Medicines Especially tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following: alpha blockers (Hytrin; Cardura; Flomax; Minipress; Uroxatral) called nitrates ketoconazole or itraconazole ritonavir (Norvir) or indinavir (Crixivan) other medicines or treatments for ED NOTE: YOU CANNOT USE CIALIS, erythromycin LEVITRA or VIAGRA on the same day.

What If I Miss A Dose?

Follow dosing instructions. This medicine is used when needed and not taken on a regular basis.

How Should It Be Stored?

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 F (15 to 30 C). Keep away from children.

Note: The above information is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise and judgment of your physician, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional.
There are no specific high blood pressure symptoms, and if you have high blood pressure, you cannot tell by the way you feel. If you experience severe high blood pressure then you may end up being hospitalized. A lot of people suffer from high blood pressure and it is indeed a matter of concern. High blood pressure symptoms may lead to some serious health hazards like heart or kidney disorders.

Suffering from cardiovascular diseases like angina, heart attack, kidney damage, eye problems, gangrene may be high blood pressure symptoms. The cardiovascular high blood pressure symptoms are related to other high blood pressure symptoms irrespective of the fact you smoke or not, or if you have diabetes or even high cholesterol.

Some lifestyle factors can add to high blood pressure symptoms but it might be the case, that in spite of the same lifestyle some people experience high blood pressure symptoms and some do not.

Hypertension or high blood pressure symptoms can run in the family. However, that does not mean you cannot notice high blood pressure symptoms if any one does not have high blood pressure in your family. If you are overweight, if you consume a lot of alcohol, if you eat a lot of salt, or if you are under a lot of stress it is likely that you could develop high blood pressure symptoms.

Many people with hypertension don't have any specific high blood pressure symptoms. You may not know you have high blood pressure. Some of the usual high blood pressure symptoms are headaches, neck aches, black out, fits, blurred vision etc. If you have such symptoms, you must regularly check your blood pressure, lead a healthy lifestyle, you should try losing weight if you are overweight, take proper and regular medicines, visit or consult your healthcare provider at regular intervals, keep a healthy diet, exercise daily, and quit smoking.

You may also have to get a number of tests done if your high blood pressure symptoms have an impact over your body. These tests might include: examination of your urine, a blood test, checking the condition of your kidneys, a chest X-ray, identifying any enlargement of the heart muscle, and an ECG. These are a few check ups that you might have to undergo if you suffer from hypertension.

If you suspect you are suffering with high blood pressure you should consult your primary care physician immediately. <bio>Paul Johnson.
One of the many forms of insurance that you can take out to give you financial peace of mind in the event that something should happen to you is critical life insurance. This type of cover will pay out a lump sum should you be diagnosed with one of the illnesses outlined within the policy.

Critical illness insurance will pay out if you are diagnosed as having a pre-determined critical illness, there are a range of around serious illnesses which are now included in a policy such as this, but of course this will vary from company to company and the policy which is on offer, so you should always ensure you understand what your particular policy covers.

However the majority of policies do cover certain conditions which are classed as core or foundation conditions and these include cancer, heart attack, kidney failure, a major organ transplant, coronary heart by pass, multiple sclerosis and a stroke. However not all illnesses are covered and in fact recently, new rulings have been set out by the Association of British Insurers regarding which conditions can be claimed on.

Due to this it is imperative that you understand conditions which are excluded from critical insurance policies. For example, conditions such as non-evasive skin cancer and prostrate cancer which isn't considered to be advanced is excluded from within a policy. Of course these are just a few examples and there are many more.

Even conditions such as heart attack has to be clearly outlined, for example there has to be evidence that there are pains in the area of the chest, along with changes to an E.C.G scan for example. If the heart problem is thought to be caused by angina then in some cases this is also excluded from the policy.

Critical illness insurance benefits everyone, those who are married and have dependant children as well as those who are single. Critical illness cover can be used to pay off the mortgage or for private medical treatment which can be more beneficial than having life cover which will only pay out if you die.

Critical insurance cover can be taken out from between the ages of 17 and 70 and can be taken out for a pre-determined amount of time, such as to go alongside the term of your mortgage. From taking out the cover there will normally be a period of time in which you cannot make a claim, for the majority of policies this is usually a period of 3 months.

Choosing the right type of critical insurance can be a problem as currently there are over 200 different versions of critical insurance cover, so understanding the type of cover you need is essential. Understanding the level of cover is also essential as some policies seem to cover just about anything, when in fact there are a lot of hidden exclusions, while a high price is charged for the product. <bio>David Thomson is Chief Executive of BestDealInsurance (http://www.bestdealinsurance.co.uk) an independent specialist broker dedicated to providing their clients with the best deal on their home, motor and life insurance. </bio>

People should start understanding the need to read their personal cholesterol reading. Cholesterol is destructive to the heart. This means that everybody should be conscious of the level of cholesterol count present in their body. To know the ideal cholesterol reading for you, you might need to go a health center for assistance. Unfortunately, this isn't a common practice among people. More often than not, one merely goes to his or her doctor whenever he feels really sick.

Your body's cholesterol count is an indicator of your risk factor as far as heart failures are concerned. Heart failures are the most dangerous effects of high cholesterol level. While you think that today's medicines are very advanced, experts are still finding it hard to give out effective solutions for the simplest of heart diseases. Most of the medicines being sold today are merely used to address the symptoms but not really cure the disease.

It is important for everyone to know what their ideal cholesterol reading is. This is for your own protection. If you know for a fact that your cholesterol level has increased, you can do what has to be done to lower it. On the other hand, if you don't know that your cholesterol count is increasing everyday, you might be surprised one day why you have difficulty breathing and feeling some chest pains. To know what cholesterol level is normal and what is high, consult with a heart doctor or a cardiologist. He would start by taking a sample of your blood and send it for analysis. This is called the blood cholesterol test. If you do this as frequently as required and if you heed the advices of your doctor, then you will free yourself from diseases such angina, atherosclerosis, and arteriosclerosis.

The blood cholesterol test would require a medical assistant or a nurse to prick your skin at the inner elbow. A certain amount of your blood has to be extracted and tested. It may hurt some, but it should be worth it and you won't have wounds anyway. Once the test is done, you would know your actual cholesterol count, along with other relevant information about your blood.

There will be a total of three data obtained -- the total blood cholesterol level, the level of good cholesterol, and the level of bad cholesterol, which you're more interested in. A person may have a total cholesterol value of 100 -- 500 or higher. As for total blood cholesterol count, the ideal is not more than 200. You should strive to get 199 and below to be safe. Borderline figure is 200 to 240. Being in the borderline doesn't mean you're safe or you're at risk. It would still depend upon your body build, your heart failure history, and other factors. Your doctor can tell you if you should decrease intake of certain food items or not. However, if you found out that your cholesterol level is 240 and beyond, then you are indeed at the risk of acquiring heart diseases if you're not careful. You might need to initiate some changes in your lifestyle.<bio>Part 2 - For part two of this article, head on to www.normalcholesterollevelonline.com where you can also find the truth about foods high in cholesterol and how to lower triglycerides.</bio>

Perhaps no other disease is as closely linked to nutrition as diabetes. Not only does nutrition play a role in its development, nutrition is also one of the disease's most powerful treatments.1 Because of this strong and critical connection to nutrition, researchers have carefully studied the use of nutritional supplements in the treatment of the disease. They found that many vitamins, such as vitamin C and the B vitamins, minerals such as chromium, as well as herbs like Gymnema sylvestre, can safely, effectively, and naturally lower blood sugars and help prevent diabetic complications. What is even more important, however, is that these vitamins, minerals, and herbs can be combined together in a scientifically validated diabetic formula to work synergistically.

People with type 1 diabetes must be treated with insulin in order to stay alive.

If uncontrolled for many years, diabetes mellitus can lead to more serious health problems:

1. Blood vessel damage within the eye (retinopathy). This can lead to blindness.

2. Kidney disease (nephropathy) or kidney failure.

3. Nerve damage (neuropathy) especially of the hands and feet, causing tingling, numbness and weakness.

4. Narrowing of the blood vessels due to fatty deposits (atherosclerosis). This increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and poor blood flow in the legs.

Uncontrolled gestational diabetes can result in a large baby and a difficult birth. It can also increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Diabetes - Circulation problems

High blood sugar damages blood vessels. When high levels of sugar are continuously in the blood, the blood vessels become thicker and less flexible, causing poor circulation. Poor circulation can impair healing, especially on the feet and lower legs. High blood sugar also causes higher levels of fat in the bloodstream. The fat clogs and narrows the blood vessels. Partial blockages deprive the heart of some necessary nutrients. A complete blockage can result in a heart attack, heart pain (called angina), or stroke.

Magnesium

Although the relationship between magnesium and diabetes has been studied for decades, it is not yet fully understood. Studies suggest that a deficiency in magnesium may worsen the blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. Scientists believe that a deficiency of magnesium interrupts insulin secretion in the pancreas and increases insulin resistance in the body's tissues. Evidence suggests that a deficiency of magnesium may contribute to certain diabetes complications. <bio>7% of the population has Diabetes!
The high fiber content, lignans and omega-3 qualities in flax seed are natural preventative properties for heart disease. Studies prove that when flax seed is added to the diet, harmful LDL cholesterol drops, while good HDL cholesterol remains or increases.

Flaxseed is a whole grain that can be found in health food stores and some supermarkets. It can be sprinkled on food, or is sometimes used in baked goods, such as muffins or bread.

What is So Special with Flaxseed?

Flaxseed contains a substance called alpha linolenic acids. Alpha linolenic acid is omega 3 fatty acid, similar to those found in fish such as salmon. Omega 3 fatty acid is a type of essential fatty acid, which can only be acquired from food.

Aside from alpha linolenic acid, flaxseed is also rich in another substance called lignan, which is a type of phytoestrogen and also provides fiber.

Flaxseeds and Cholesterol

Flaxseeds can help lower cholesterol, protect against heart disease and control high blood pressure. Several studies indicate that flaxseed oil, as well as ground flaxseeds, can lower cholesterol, thereby significantly reducing the risk of heart disease. Flaxseed oil may also have a protective effect against angina (chest pain) and high blood pressure. In addition, a 5-year study done recently at Boston's Simmons College found that flaxseed oil may be useful in preventing a 2nd heart attack. It may also help prevent elevated blood pressure by inhibiting inflammatory reactions that cause poor circulation and artery-hardening plaque.

Good food, no magic bullet

All plant foods, including flax, have good things to offer. Garlic, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, legumes, and whole grains all have a range of beneficial chemicals. If you want to add flaxseeds to your diet, that's a good idea. But if cheeseburgers are your main source of calories, adding flaxseeds won't help much.

Known as linseed in Europe, flaxseed is prized by health-conscious eaters everywhere due to its abundant omega-3 fatty acid content. Small, oval-shaped flaxseeds come from the flax plant, which is grown in European countries, including France, Belgium, Russia, and Germany. In the United States, flaxseeds are primarily produced in Montana, Minnesota, Texas, and the Dakotas. <bio>Good health requires the right ratio of http://Flaxseed.ewhy.info fatty acids to Omega 6 fatty acids in the diet. Researches has proven that the ancient Flax Seed is the magic pill! </bio>
