If you are a classical musician, opera singer, jazz performer, or pop group, you may have grown up dreaming of one day performing at the world famous Carnegie Hall. For over a hundred years, Carnegie Hall has been a status symbol of the highest echelons of musical taste and appreciation.

Carnegie Hall bears the name of Andrew Carnegie, who originally had it built to house the Oratorio Society of New York and the New York Symphony Society. Carnegie, who was famous for his philanthropy, served on the boards of both organizations. The great hall opened its doors on May 5, 1891 and featured the famous composer Peter Tchaikovsky conducting his musical works.

Quite a prestigious beginning for a music hall. Over the years, many famous performers have appeared at Carnegie Hall, such as Duke Ellington, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Yo-Yo Ma and yes, even the Beatles!

Carnegie Hall houses three concert halls and a museum. The Main Hall seats 2,804 people and is five levels. If you don't want to walk up 100+ stairs, you can always take the elevator. This is where all the big concerts are held. The acoustics are marvelous. The late classical violinist, Isaac Stern, once said about the acoustics "It takes what you do and makes it larger than life."

The love that Isaac Stern had for Carnegie Hall is evident as you'll see that the Main Hall is now called the Isaac Stern Auditorium. Believe it or not, Carnegie Hall was slated for demolition in 1960, but due to the efforts of Stern, it was saved and eventually purchased by the City of New York for $5 million.

The other two halls are much smaller and suitable for more intimate performances. Zankel Hall seats 599 and the newer Weil Hall seats 268. You can also visit the Rose Museum, which houses the Carnegie Archives, artifacts and memorabilia of the buildings history and performances.

When you reach the great hall, located at Seventh Avenue and West 57th Street, you'll immediately admire its Italian Renaissance style architecture. The hall was even designed by a musician, an amateur cellist named William Tuthill.

Just a short walk around the corner is the Steinway Building, which displays some beautifully crafted Steinway pianos, the same type of pianos that are often used by Carnegie Hall performers.

There are over 100 performances a season held at Carnegie Hall. If you have your heart set on attending a concert there, be aware that you'll need to buy your tickets way in advance, because they tend to sell out quickly. If you are lucky enough to attend an event at Carnegie, you'll enjoy some of the world's finest musical performances while admiring its splendor. <bio>Cruise the beautiful Hawaiian Islands =96 even if you're on a budget http://www.last-minute-hawaii-cruise.com </bio>

Vice President Cheney, upon his return from a visit to former Soviet Bloc nations, during which he criticized Russian President Putin in unusually direct, if correct, terms, found himself suffering from shortness of breath. Hesitant about consulting a doctor immediately, he performed a self-diagnosis and realized that his condition was due primarily to putting his foot in his mouth with alarming frequency.

Knowing the tenuous disposition of his cardiovascular system, he determined to remedy his verbal dereliction and signed up for a course at Dale Carnegie, where he expected to learn How To Win Friends And Influence People.

At his first class, however, he found himself unable to listen calmly to his lecturer and began to dispute with him. Taken aback, the professor explained that his statements were not based on his own beliefs but consisted entirely of the time-honored teachings of Dale Carnegie.

The Vice President was not assuaged, and announced, "You're just not living in the real world. Let me show you how it really is."

With that, he ambled to the blackboard and began to revise the statements the teacher had written there. Fortunately, a member of our staff, who always accompanies the Vice President when he thinks a story may be in the making, had accompanied him.

Here are selections from his notes on Mr. Cheney's revisions of Carnegie's teachings. For ease of comparison, we present the original Carnegie categories and principles, immediately followed by the Cheney update.

1. Fundamental Techniques in Handling People

Carnegie: Don't criticize, condemn, or complain.

Cheney: Easy fix. Just erase the word "Don't."

Carnegie: Give honest and sincere appreciation.

Cheney: Another easy fix. Let's add back the word "Don't."

2. Ways To Make People Like You

Carnegie: Smile.

Cheney: Honest people hardly ever smile; hypocrites do.

Carnegie: Make the other person feel important -- and do it sincerely.

Cheney: What other person? I'm the most important person in the room, even when I'm talking to the President.

3. Win People To Your Way Of Thinking

Carnegie: Show respect for the other person's opinions. Never say, "You're wrong."

Cheney: Why? Since I'm the Vice President, the other person is always wrong.

Carnegie: Begin in a friendly way.

Cheney: Again, why -- when you're about to tell the person something that's not friendly?

Carnegie: Get the other person saying "yes, yes," immediately.

Cheney: Here we agree.

Carnegie: Try honestly to see things from the other person's point of view.

Cheney: What for, if he's wrong to begin with?

Carnegie: Throw down a challenge.

Cheney: Now we're talking.

4. Be a Leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing Resentment

Carnegie: Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly.

Cheney: Mind if I just erase the first syllable of the last word?

Carnegie: Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.

Cheney: If I made mistakes, I wouldn't be the Vice President.

Carnegie: Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

Cheney: OK, that's why I'm here. Tell me how. Then maybe I can relax.

The teacher, gasping from his own shortness of breath, uttered, "I have no idea."

"Then, if you don't mind, I'll excuse myself. As a Vice Presidential courtesy, I won't charge for the updates." <bio>Tom Attea, creator of http://NewsLaugh.com, has had six shows produced Off-Broadway and has written comedy for TV.
Andrew Carnegie paid Charles Schwab a million dollars a year as president of U. S. Steel. When criticized by some of the board members for paying this salary to a man who knew nothing about the steel industry, Carnegie replied, "We have the greatest steel minds in the world, now we need a man who will help this organization to grow effectively. Life's greatest ability is the ability to influence and motivate others and Charles Schwab was one of the greatest motivators in the world."

This is the concept that made Andrew Carnegie so fantastically successful. He earned $600,000,000 in his lifetime, he gave away $365,000,000 in his benevolent interest, but the key to it was his fantastic ability to motivate people. He had in his Master Mind Organization, some 45 people; then in the smaller groups, some 15 people. The requirement was total unity, no hostility, individual initiative and compensation, and dedication to the common purpose. On one occasion Carnegie said "take from me my millions and my buildings and leave me my people and I'll soon build it back again."

Let me give you some suggestions today, to improve your personality:

1.Find out these things about every person you meet: His name and how he spells it, his family, his business, and his home. He will be happy to tell you about these things, they involve himself; and a man would rather talk about himself than any other subject in the world. You honor him when you urge him to talk about himself. In addition, you're finding out those things about him that you need to know to cement your fellowship with him.

2.Look for, pick out, and compliment, some good in every person you meet. You may have to look for it in some people, but you always find something good you can comment on. Be sincere and specific about your compliments.

3.Never use sarcasm. It comes from the root word which means "to bite human flesh like a wild dog cuts flesh." Sarcasm tears the very heart and joy and peace and happiness out of an individual. Never use it.

4.Direct questions to the individuals: Learn all you can about each person you meet, keep asking them questions; they will delight in telling you about themselves.

5.Believe and urge other people to achieve their very best in life. Challenge them to achievement, give them something worthy to look up to. Especially this should be practiced by children and youth. They feel so inadequate, they feel so inferior, they haven't had life's achieving experiences yet. So throw down a challenge, give them something high and noble to attempt.

6.Seek and excite the spark of enthusiasm in every person you meet. Enthusiasm is not a loud noise, it is spirit, excitement, conviction, encouragement, belief. Bruce Barton has said, "if you can leave your child but one thing, leave your child enthusiasm."

7.Leave a little hope and happiness in every life you touch. Some=ACone has said "when I met him I was looking down, when I left him I was looking up." There is nothing finer to be said about a person than that kind of influence.

8.Repeat only those things that will honor, bless, and enrich every person you've talked with and about. Gossip always is exaggerated. It always gets worse, and the more people it goes through, the worse it be=ACcomes. Repeat only that which will bless other lives.

Let me assure you that the practice of these rules will make your life a more wonderful, radiant experience, and everyone you contact will be blessed. Why not take one of these rules for a week. Practice it, master it, make it become yours. Then, take another one the next week. You'll find your life will take on deeper meaning as you become a master in motivating people. <bio>Mr. Glenn W.
Napoleon Hill made more millionaires over his lifetime than anyone who came before him...even more than Andrew Carnegie.

His book, 'Think and Grow Rich' even today influences the minds of people all around the world.

But how did Dr. Hill become so tremendous? So outrageously successful? At a very early age, he understood a very important success principle.

'Billionaire' Dan Pena over in Scotland also understands this very same success principle.

Most people say they want financial fr.eedom...a nicer home, another car, to travel more, to be able to make your own hours.

We see Dan Pena's obscenely beautiful castle and comment, 'I want that too.'

But Dan is quick to tell you about all the years of hard work and sacrifice he put in which made that castle his own.

And it took Napoleon Hill all but 3 seconds to tell Andrew Carnegie he was willing to work the next 20 years for him without any sort of pay or compensation in order to succeed.

So in light of what these two great men have accomplished, answer this for me:

"What are YOU willing to pay for your financial freedom?"

What are YOU willing to DO in order to have the things you've always wanted inyour life?

(What price are you going to pay if you DON'T do what it takes!)

People who have little can feel the pain of their circumstances and are more apt to do something to make a change in their lives. This is because we all naturally move toward pleasure and away from pain. Their challenge of course is that they have to learn a whole new way of doing things.

Those who have a lot and still strive to reach higher goals usually have some of the success principles already at work in their lives and need new strategies and paradyms.

Where do YOU fit in here?

Are you struggling to make ends meet? Are you saddled down with mortgages and other types of debt?

Or are you somewhere in the middle...where you have some, just enough to keep you moving on the hamster wheel of life each day?

9 out of 10 people tell me they're 110% committed to doing what it takes to succeed.

You know what? All but 1 or 2 of those 9 people are simply talking and not ready to actually roll up their sleeves and scrape their knuckles getting the work done.

I'm telling you this:

"You have to choose financial freedom and then be willing to do what it takes to make it happen."

You cannot hope for it. You cannot wish it into existence. And you cannot gain it from outside yourself.

We don't all have to be Dan Penas and Napoleon Hills.

But take the wisdom from their achievements and make it your own.

If you can't dedicate your next 20 years or if you're not willing to sacrifice the precious moments of being with your family in order to get your own castle, then at least do this:

Take a small step.

Make an extra sales call.

Get up 20 minutes earlier each day to work on your vision or work out your muscles.

Cut out ONE TV show and get working on your future.

Choose It. Commit To It. Make It Happen.

Keith Matthew Pathways To Power, LLC

P.S. - If you haven't yet picked up a copy of the 'How To Attract Success' Kit, I highly recommend you go here now and get it: http://www.pathwaystopower.com/attract.html <bio>Keith Matthew and Laura Roman Lopez have been teaching personal development and wealth building techniques for 12 years.
We are starkly set today to be in the glimpse of great wealth. Today, successful people are finding endless opportunities to advance their financial freedom while helping a lot of people. However, while these stories are inspiring, most see it as impossible or "out of their realm." This thinking is a reflection of the plight of people in the bins. Our effort in achieving wealth therefore starts with changing that mindset.

Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich is a good initial action to change that mindset. Although this book was written more than 70 years ago, it still communicates the same shout that by the most successful people today; that achieving financial freedom is an exercise of continuing shift in thinking.

This is a book of conceiving and achieving. It first argues that "whatever your mind can conceive and believe it can achieve." This argument is the essence of Napoleon Hill's interview with the 500 richest men in America during his time. This is certainly the idea that has come across the likes of Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Elmer Gates, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and many more. Hill's book is therefore the summation of the thoughts of these great men.

Background of Think and Grow Rich

Think and Grow Rich was borne out of the efforts of the famous Andrew Carnegie. As a Swedish immigrant that grew from poverty, Andrew Carnegie saw the need for communicating the practicalities of money making. Carnegie tabbed Napoleon Hill for such ambitious project. Today, the book has sold over 7 million books and is the main source of inspiration for highly successful people 70 years after it was written.

This book outlines thirteen steps to achieve financial freedom. Napoleon Hill first talks about desire as the starting point of all achievement. In this book, desire is not a wish, a dream, or a leaning. Instead, desire talks about the emblem of passion, which allows one to focus on his goal at all cost. For Edison, the desire to invent allowed him to be what he is. In short, desire is burning, not just a silly figment of our actions.

Secondly, he talks about faith or the belief that desire can be attained. Faith allows us to be continually focused on our desire because we know that we can achieve in the future. Napoleon Hill implied that faith makes miracles. In a parallel view, in order for a desire to be all encompassing, it must border on miracles. Thus, faith and desire are strong suggestions in achieving financial freedom.

A Step by Step Approach to Changing Mindset

While there are thirteen very helpful steps to achieve wealth creation, Napoleon Hill also outlines action within our fundamental minds. Thus, in Think and Grow Rich, the art of decision making and the mastery of procrastination are discussed. Procrastination and decision go hand in hand. Most people tend to hold decisions because they lack a sense of judgment, or they do not like risk taking. However, every pause that we make is time lost in what could have been a productive action. Napoleon Hill states that most successful people do act quickly and decide often. Therefore procrastination is not a problem of laziness but a myopic view on the value of decision making. It should be our attitude to put action ahead of us.

This book is definitely a must read for people who have not grasped what thinking rich means. While most people will continue to believe their status quo which puts them at the bottom of the financial chain, Think and Grow Rich will help you change a lot of your values and help you see the world in a different light. Taking steps to financial freedom as set out by a timeless book starts from our heads. After that, you will be surprised what a change of perspective will do to you. <bio>Robert Taylor believes in the "Think and Grow Rich" principles. The first thing one has to do to reach any goal is identify what it is that is desired. Write it down. Now that it is written down these thoughts are now taking on a physical form.
Riches are our target. When studying the ways to improve your earning and personal financial potential, the focus has to been confined, exclusively, to the instruction of how to transmute the definite purpose of desire for money into its monetary equivalent.

This treatise is a Manifestation Manual for money, and while it is true, there is more to manifest than money, we unashamedly adopt as our study, our pursuit, and the education we give to worthy students coming up the ranks, the application of the methods of manifestation to money.

Besides, earned money brings actualization. And actualization fosters a life of contribution.

From everything I have seen, independent wealth gives you the height from which you have the vision to decide how you would like to contribute to the earth and the inhabitants during your brief stay here.

That is a thought of proportions vastly more grand than the daily survival thoughts of the masses of humanity. Need you be reminded?

Fortunately, we are not studying the poor, but the wealthy. Truly, with the things that wealth gives you, you can live even after your death.

Witness the names written here. Names still resounding in the ears of aware people even 100 years after their crowning achievements played out on the stage of the living moment.

Have you heard of the Ford Foundation? How about Carnegie-Mellon University, Vanderbilt University, The Rockefeller Foundation.

This is just a spattering of the worthy fortunes still working in our generation from the acquisition and investment of wealth.

Of course, we acknowledge riches cannot always be measured in money. Money and material things are essential for freedom of body and mind.

There are some who feel the greatest of all riches can be evaluated only in terms of lasting friendships, harmonious family relationships, sympathy and understanding between business associates, and introspective harmony which brings one peace of mind measurable only in spiritual values.

All who read, understand and apply this philosophy will be better prepared to attract and enjoy these higher estates, which always have been and always will be denied to all except those who are ready for them.

Actualization happens when the most highly achieving, contributing people get the most juice out of life. It is necessary to have an independent income to do that. Manifestation and Actualization are two important ingredients to fulfilling your desires.

Conventional schooling is of no value. It was the Carnegie idea magic formula, which gave him a stupendous fortune and ought to be placed within reach of people who do not have time or resources to investigate how people make big money. It was his hope that I might test and demonstrate the soundness of the formula through the experience of men and women in every calling.

He believed the formula should be taught in all public schools and colleges, and expressed the opinion that if it were properly taught, it would so revolutionize the entire educational system that the time spent in school could be reduced to less than half.

His experience with Charles M. Schwab, and other young men of Schwabs type, convinced Carnegie that much of that which is taught in the schools is of no value whatsoever in connection with the business of earning a living or accumulating riches.

Indeed, it is true. They just do not teach people how to become outstanding, entrepreneurial contributors to society, or how to design and grow your own business. Instead they focus on norming the population. Whether you like to admit it or not, you know it is true.

When it comes to acquiring financial independence, not just a better job, a higher rung on the rat race, study after study has detected no measurable advantage correlated to education.

Carnegie had arrived at this decision because he had taken into his business one young man after another, many of them with little schooling, and by coaching them in the use of this formula, developed in them rare leadership. Moreover, his coaching made fortunes for everyone of them who followed his instructions.

The practical value of this philosophy in the chapter on Faith, you will read the astounding story of the organization of the giant United States Steel Corporation, as it was conceived and carried out by one of the young men through whom Mr. Carnegie proved that his formula will work for all who are ready for it.

This single application of the secret, Actualization and Manifestation by that young man, Charles M. Schwab, yielded him a huge fortune in both money and opportunity. Roughly speaking, this particular application of the formula was worth 600 million dollars. And that at a time when a million dollars was still a staggering sum.

Today, in the New Millennium, the much heralded Twenty First Century, in the upper middle class neighbourhoods of cities around the world, a million dollar income is a common thing. Not so at the turn of the Twentieth Century, 100 years ago, when first setting the philosophy of success to paper.

Put your ear balls on this one. If you were to take the 600 million dollars created from that single idea in 1903 and adjust it for inflation to today, that would be approximately 12 billion dollars.

Clearly the realm of Bill Gates thinking=85 another practical visionary who turned an idea into billions of dollars.

These facts and they are facts well known to almost everyone who knew Mr. Carnegie , give you a fair idea of what the lessons learned may bring to you, provided you know what it is you want. <bio>Mark Ashbridge is a Certified MasterMind Consultant studying 'The NEW Think and Grow Rich' directly from the author.
If you're like most people who take piano lessons, you do! ?Whether you're young or old or somewhere in between, you aspire to make beautiful music and... right away!

?You've probably heard the old joke: ? "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" asks the inquisitive tourist. ?"Practice, practice, practice!" replies the wise old responder.? ?But wouldn't you much prefer to learn the secret to sounding good just for your own satisfaction and enjoyment? ??That's probably why you take piano lessons=85 However, most piano students forget to pay attention to the very areas that would enable them to sound great!

?Do you do one or more of the following?

1. Ignore the timing by not counting or tapping your foot.

2. Play everything at the same volume.

3. Disregard the key signature and just start playing the piece.

4. Use too much pedal.

5. "Type" or bang the keys and disconnect one note from another.

6. Allow the accompaniment (usually the left hand part) to overpower or drown out the melody.

7. Listen to talk radio instead of spending some of your time listening to music.

If you recognized any of the above habits as things you do, congratulations! ?Now you know why you aren't sounding like a pro yet.

(Parents: Have you noticed these traits in your children who take lessons?)

Obviously, you want to sound good! (And you parents want your kids to sound good, don't you?) ??So instead of treating piano practice like a chore, here are seven ways to start you on the way to Carnegie Hall:

1. Pay attention to the timing: count or tap your foot.

2. Notice the dynamics (indications for differences in volume) and follow them.

3. Look at the key signature before you start to play and mark all of the sharps or flats if you need to.

4. Use the pedal with care. (Pedal changes are often marked in classical pieces, and should be made in songs with each chord change.)

5. Employ correct fingering as you work towards playing smoothly and connected (unless the music asks for staccato: detached playing).

6. Listen for the melody. Can you always hear it while you are playing?

7. Focus on spending some time listening to music every week. (With wonderful tools like iPods, MP3 players and the internet, it's easy to find recorded versions of the pieces that you play as well as music that motivates and inspires you.) Give these suggestions a try. ?Start today. ?You'll be surprised at how much better you sound!

Copyright =A9 2007 by Ed Mascari http://www.edmascaripianostudio.com <bio>Ed Mascari has been teaching piano privately to children and adults for nearly three decades. Groban is known for music that's mature beyond his years, and his classical baritone style is capturing the hearts and ears of millions of fans. A look at Groban's life will help explain how his style and status came to be.

Early Life

Joshua Winslow Groban was born on February 27, 1981 in Los Angeles. He was seen as a musical prodigy from an early age, and dedicated a large part of his life to the study of musical arts. Groban fell in love with singing immediately, and made his performance debut in the seventh grade. However, his love for music caused his grades to fall, so he had to put his performance career on hold for a time in order to regain control of his academic pursuits.

Soon, however, Groban was back in the swing of things academically and got back into his music. He enjoyed several opportunities for early exposure, including working as a rehearsal singer for such events as the Grammy Awards. Groban didn't completely lose sight of his studies, though, and after completing his diploma at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, he enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University to continue his musical studies.

Career Progress

Groban spent only one year at Carnegie Mellon before he dropped out. The reason he left school was because he was offered a recording contract, and Groban felt it was time to take his skills to the stage. He worked the live circuit for awhile, and his sultry voice soon created a high level of demand for Josh Groban tickets.

In 2001, he released his first album, Josh Groban, and it was a success. Groban has since released three additional albums, and he is quickly gaining acclaim as his style continues to evolve. Groban has also put in time to help those less fortunate, as he donated his talents to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, among other causes.

Overall, Josh Groban may not have a lot of time under his belt on the music scene, but his talents are transcendent. Every new release shows not only where Groban has been, but where he's headed, and Josh Groban tickets will only become more difficult to find as this star continues to ascend. <bio>Written by Jay Nault, sponsored by http://www.stubhub.com/ .
You are in an interview with a loan examiner who works for a mortgage lender for bad credit. He sits across the table - a dignified-looking man in an expensive lead-grey suit and silk power tie. His hairdo looks like a wig, with not a single strand out of place. He looks you up and down, and then asks why you are applying for a loan. You explain that you are not wealthy like him, so you have no choice. During the interview, you repeatedly refer to the examiner as "man," "dude," and "dog," creating an uncomfortable look on his face. Towards the end of the interview, you announce that you must "bounce," so you can drive home and feed Eggbert, your pet chicken. You then abruptly stand up, turn around, and head for the door.

Know Who You Are Talking To We do not talk to our brothers and sisters the same way we talk to our bosses. "Code-switching" is the fancy term for how we talk to different people, using different lingo. Regardless of whether we are talking in person, over the phone, or through e-mail, we must always remember who we are talking to. While it is wise to use the terms "sir" and "ma'am" in interviews with mortgage lenders for bad credit, it would be nerdy, if not downright weird, to address our buddies or girlfriends the same way. The wish of every person on Earth is to feel important. When you refer to the president of a country as "dude," or to your girlfriend as "ma'am," the implied message is: "You are NOT important."

Be Nice Stating or implying that someone else is unimportant is only a compliment in Wonderland, where up is down. According to Dale Carnegie's book "How to Win Friends and Influence People," one of the cornerstones of dealing with people is "Don't criticize, condemn or complain." To protect what Sigmund Freud referred to as our ego, it is our nature to feel that we are right-even when we are wrong! So when dealing with mortgage lenders for bad credit, only speak positively of the company and your situation. This will give the impression that you value and respect their institution.

Two Little Words with a Big Meaning Carnegie recommends that when dealing with people, we should also show truthful and heartfelt appreciation. In other words, we should show our thanks, but only if we mean it. This will make the party being thanked feel appreciated and important. When dealing with mortgage lenders for bad credit, we have several opportunities to do this. Make sure to thank mortgage lenders for bad credit for sending you information or giving you an interview in-person. And if you are approved for the loan, you could even send them a token of your appreciation.

How to Build a Want Lastly, Carnegie writes that it is important to create a "want" in people. It is human nature to first be concerned about our own interests. So, when dealing with mortgage lenders for bad credit, never give sob stories about why you have no downpayment for a mortgage. Rather, show how you could, and will, pay back the money that you hope mortgage lenders for bad credit will lend you. That will make them feel important.

Mastering how to talk to people effectively will make dealing with them easier. Mortgage lenders for bad credit are no different from your friends or co-workers. It's not only what you are telling them that matters; it's how you say it. <bio>Looking for mortgage lenders for bad credit ( http://www.whataboutloans.com/mortgage/mortgage-lender.html )?
Scientists at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology studying satellite date have found that only 1 to 2 percent of forest disturbance in the Peruvian Amazon occured in protected areas, which means that land-use and conservation policies have been successful. Protected areas are 18 times more effective at reducing deforestatio than unprotected areas.

Lead author Paulo Oliveira said, "We found that only 1 to 2 % of this disturbance in Peru happened in natural protected areas. However, there was substantial forest disturbance adjacent to areas set aside for legal logging operations. This leakage of human activity outside of logging concessions is a concern."

Peru's tropical forests are larger than France, which stretch 661,000 sq km and is second only to Brazil's forest area. The Peruvian government has been conscientiously putting aside large areas as parks and reserves while allocating around 40,000 sq miles of forest for long-term commercial timber production by 2005. With deforestation rates of less than 1%, Peru has comparatively lower rates when compared to its neighbors.

Scientists used the Carnegie Landsat Analysis System (CLAS), a "satellite-based forest-damage detection system" that penetrates the rainforest canopy to reveal the impact of logging. The CLAS system can uncover forest changes at a resolution of less than 100 by 100 ft.

GP Asner said, "Our approach has improved over the past eight years, but relies on a core set of methods that have consistently worked. We spent years developing them in Brazil, then went to Peru and completed this study in only a year. We are now operating over Borneo. Our approach is proving a good way to monitor rain forest disturbance and deforestation anywhere in the world."

Researchers found that Peru's forest disturbance and deforestation rates between 1999 to 2005 were only 0.2% a year, with an average of 244 sq miles and 249 miles a year. More than 85% of the damaged forests were in Madre de Dios and near Pucallpa. 75% of the damage was found within 20km of roads. Even within those limits, forests set aside by the government were more than 4 times better protected than areas not designated for conservation.

The authors said, "Overall, only 2% of the forest disturbances and 1% the deforestation detected in the entire study area occurred within the boundaries of natural protected areas. Furthermore, territories occupied by indigenous communities contained 11% and 9% of the total forest disturbance and deforestation, respectively. These results clearly show that these two forms of land-use allocation can provide effective protection against forest damage."

"The establishment of protected natural areas, the titling of native territories, and the sanctioning of selective logging activities, have combined with the Peruvian Amazon's traditional conservation allies--its remoteness and a complex hydrological network--to ensure a moderate level of success in the conservation of its forest ecosystems. Economic development of the forest sector, which employed 279,000 people nationally in 2001 (24), is essential for the well-being of human populations, but poorly monitored logging concessions, along with the challenges of uncontrolled road access, may hinder efforts to maintain ecological function and diversity in Peruvian rainforests in the future," the authors continued.

"Increased satellite monitoring of logging and other forest disturbances will thus be essential to conservation, management and resource policy development efforts in Peru and other rainforest nations," they concluded.

"This is another study from the Carnegie group showing the world how tropical forests can be systematically monitored amazingly quickly and at a reasonable cost." said Michael Wright of The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, which helped support the research. "I foresee that CLAS-like satellite analysis systems will become the standards routinely used by local conservation agencies to track rain forest disturbances and deforestation in the future."

The study was published in the on-line edition of Science Express this month.<bio>L.
Do you trust your feelings and take action for yourself based on your feelings? Many of us grew up learning to mistrust our feelings. "Don't be ridiculous," my mother often said to me when I asked her why she was angry. "I'm not angry," she would say with anger in her voice. "Don't be ridiculous" was what I often heard in response to many of my feelings. So I learned to mistrust my feelings. It took me many years of inner work to regain trust in my feelings.

Feelings are information. Our feelings such as anger, anxiety, depression, and hurt are letting us know that we are telling ourselves something that is not true, or treating ourselves in unloving ways. Our uncomfortable or lonely feelings around another person may be telling us that the other person is being judgmental, needy, angry, blaming or inauthentic.

For example, Sally consulted with me because she often found herself repulsed by her husband's sexual advances. She was confused because she loved Tim very much, and there were times when she was sexually attracted to him. But most of the time she was turned off to him.

"Sally, when Tim approaches you for sex, what is his energy like?"

"Most of the time, I feel like he is pulling on me and demanding something from me. It doesn't feel loving, it feels needy. But when I say something about it to him, he tells me that it us my issue -- that he loves me and just wants to express his love. I get so confused."

Sally has a hard time trusting her feelings because her mother was constantly invalidating her feelings as she was growing up. She has the same problem with a neighbor:

"It seems to me that Chelsea is often subtly judging my daughter in front of her, yet when I've said something to her she makes me feel like it's my issue."

"Sally, if you decided to trust and honor your feelings, what would you do differently with Tim and Chelsea?"

"Humm...well, I think I would stop being so tentative and stop judging myself and be firm with them."

"So what would you say to Tim when he is needy with you?"

"I would say, 'Tim, I love you and I am turned on to you when you come to me with your love, but not when you come to me with this empty needy energy.'"

"What would you say to Chelsea?"

"I would say, 'Chelsea, it is not okay to judge my daughter. If you keep doing this, I will not spend time with you.'"

"And what would you say or do if they tried to make it your issue?"

"I think I would say, 'This doesn't feel good,' and then walk away.

"How would you feel if you did this?"

"I would feel great!"

Andrew has a similar issue with his wife Susan. Andrew often feels Susan is being what he calls "not real." "There is something about her that is often inauthentic -- like she is being a certain way to get approval from me and from others. I feel smothered by it and I shut down. Then she complains about my withdrawal and about my not wanting to have sex with her. But when I try to explain it to her, she gets angry and defensive and tells me that I have a problem with intimacy."

"Andrew, you are not trusting and honoring your feelings, which does create a problem with intimacy because you withdraw rather than speak your truth. If you were to totally trust your feelings when Susan is being inauthentic and pulling for approval, you would speak your truth instead of withdraw. Susan doesn't know when she is being inauthentic. She is just confused by your withdrawal. If you learn to trust your feelings and honor them by telling your truth, you will likely see much improvement in your relationship."

Andrew was surprised to learn that Susan actually appreciated hearing his truth, and their relationship is gradually improving. <bio>Margaret Paul, Ph.D., best-selling author of eight books, including "Do I Have To Give Up Me To Be Loved By You" and co-creator of the powerful Inner Bonding healing process.
Wherever you are from, we wish you a warm welcome from Citylocal Fife, 'the business directory in Fife' based near the Royal Burgh and City of Dunfermline and covering all the ancient Kingdom.

WELCOME to the Kingdom of Fife!

If you are visiting Fife by road from the North or South, then we apologise for taking your money for the privilege of crossing the bridge(s); and rest assured we wouldn't do that if Dunfermline were still the Capital of Scotland instead of the young upstart, Edinburgh. It does however indicate that the Scottish Parliament places more value on Fife than Edinburgh.

Dunfermline is a city with many easily accessible and interesting attractions, from its ancient 12th-century Abbey to the restored 15th-century Abbot House where you can enjoy a snack and drink in its cosy café, or you can choose to explore the bustling High Street and once you have finished your retail therapy you can relax and absorb the atmosphere in 'Oolahs', a modern and well appointed café in the High Street.

Andrew Carnegie the world famous industrialist and philanthropist was born in Dunfermline in 1835, and as you explore the City you will find his 'ghost' is everywhere, no more so than in his family home, a humble weaver's cottage which been preserved and extended to include a museum of his life.

Only a few minutes drive from Dunfermline, you will find several villages worth visiting, Culross (another Royal Burgh) to the West, is in my view the most interesting, and when you walk along the narrow cobbled streets you can imagine yourself back in the 16th or 17th century. The village is kept in first class order, and the pan-tiled houses with their crow-step gables have been sympathetically restored. There is plenty to see and do for both adults and children, and if time is short I would suggest that your priority is The Palace (built between 1597 and 1611) which was the home of Sir George Bruce, an enterprising merchant and coal baron. Its original interiors feature some magnificent painted woodwork and ceilings, and it has mediaeval gardens to the rear. The Palace has its own first class tea rooms, and 'The Red Lion', a local pub, has an excellent restaurant with a varied and very reasonably priced menu.

Limekilns and Charlestown although not on the same scale as Culross are also both picturesque coastal villages, with their own character and history, and are well worthy of a visit, especially in the summer months. There is a good selection of beer and meals available at the 'Ship Inn' in Limekilns, and 'The Elgin Hotel' in Charleston is also worth a visit. In our next edition we will cover the towns of Aberdour, Burntisland, Inverkeithing Kinghorn and Kirkcaldy as we move up towards the East Neuk on the way to St Andrews. <bio>Angus Whitton http://www.citylocal.co.uk/cities/Fife/business/All http://www.citylocal.co.uk/cities/Fife/news http://www.citylocal.co.uk/cities/Fife </bio>
