Many people have realized that the quality of air inside the home is not of the same standard it once was. This has caused an entire industry to emerge with the goal and focus of cleaning up the air inside the home. This helps clean up the atmosphere because the amount of pollutants emerging from homes out into the environment is greatly reduced. Each air purifier is slightly different, despite having the same primary goal.

The Alpine air purifier is one of the best air purifiers on the market today. When doing a comparison for air purifiers online, you are likely to come across the Alpine air purifier without having to look very long. The Alpine air purifier is one of the smaller air purifier units that is capable of purifying the entire house on its own. This is part of what gives the Alpine air purifier so much credibility in the market today.

The Alpine air purifier also takes great pride in the fact that it is very portable and easy to move around, giving the consumer flexibility when they are trying to clean the air in their home. Most other air purifier units by different manufacturers are too large to be freely moved around.

The Alpine air purifier is also perfect for anywhere you might want to freshen the air, whether it is a storage room, attic, home gym or even an office. The Alpine air purifier is perfect for removing mildew, mold, pet dander and other harmful particles in the air; you are able to enjoy clean, healthier air in virtually no time at all.

The Alpine air purifier is not a cheap store brand. It stands for quality, integrity and standards that are completely unsurpassed in the field. While some Alpine air purifier units can be purchased for less than $200, you can rest assured you are getting a quality product that will last a very long time and keep your air much cleaner for years to come.

Is the price of an Alpine air purifier worth it? Most definitely, especially when compared to the reduced occurrences of allergies and other respiratory problems. Many consumers are able to breathe much more easily, knowing that the harmful particles in the air are removed, leaving clean air that leaves them relaxed and breathing better. <bio>Find more Helpful [ http://www.airpurifiersonsale.com/] Air Purifier tips, advice Click Here: http://www.airpurifiersonsale.com A Popular website that specializes in tips and resources to include Allergy Relief Air Purifier, Car Air Purifier, and [ http://airpurifiersonsale.com/air-purifier-humidifier.html] Air Purifier Humidifier </bio>

A Kenyan Safari to the Mount Kenya National Park and Reserve should be on your list of options when planning a safari if only because of its height, being the second highest mountain in Africa. Mount Kenya is 17,058 feet high and the National Park and Reserve has 1300 square kilometres of forest reserve with 715 square kilometres above the 10,500 ft tree line, where the entire mountain is National Park

This height means that what you are going to see a huge variety of spectacular scenery which makes the Park very special. There are lakes, tarns, glaciers, peaks, natural mineral springs, and the vegetation changes quite dramatically with the height from sea level. Add to this high altitude adapted plains game, and unique alpine vegetation with eleven species of endemic plants. The surroundings in the Mount Kenya Safari Park are truly breathtaking

You will find dry upland forest in the lower slopes, then after about 7000 ft this changes to montane forest of cedar and podo which then changes to thick bamboo at a little over 8000 ft, and then these die out as you climb higher, and you find smaller trees and high altitude mosses. After 10000ft you come onto high altitude heath and shrubs , and then finally above 11000 feet there is open moorland.

A Kenya safari is mostly about wildlife, and Mount Kenya national park has its fair share, again changing with altitude, and the season of the year. During the rains it is the dispersal area for Meru National Park especially elephant and buffalo. In fact electrified fencing has been put up near populated areas to keep the elephants off farmland.

The wildlife in the forest below the Park Boundary includes the aforementioned elephant and buffalo. To which can be added lion, several different species of antelope including the very rare bongo. If you are incredibly lucky you might see up to eleven species unique to this area above 2500 metres. There are the black leopard, black and white Colobus and Sykes monkeys, bushbuck, buffalo, elephant. Then lower down Olive baboon, waterbuck, black rhino, black fronted duikers, leopard, giant forest hog, genet cat, bushpig and hyena.. The very privileged few might even see albino zebra. Above the treeline you'll find high altitude zebra and eland.

The accommodation in the Mount Kenya National Park consists of one lodge, seven climber huts, and three self help banda sites , and three lodges and a self help banda site just outside the park.

To summarise the attractions of the Mount Kenya National Park and reserve.

There is excellent game viewing, fantastic scenery, with the lakes, tarns, glaciers, and high peaks. A number of rare birds and animals, and the high altitude plains game and the mountain forest. Added to this the natural mineral springs, and for a few intrepid souls mountain climbing itself, but this is not for the hill walker but more the skilled mountaineer.

If you are planning a memorable Kenyan Safari then a trip to the Mount Kenya National Park and Reserve promises to be a wonderful experience.

For more information on In Kenya safaris go to http://www.in-kenyasafari.com/pages/Site-Map.html <bio>Peter Stewart writes exclusively for http://www.in-kenyasafari.com as well as http://www.worldwidevacationspots.com and has visited personally many of the places he reports on, and has done extensive research on the others </bio>

The scenery is primitive and has understandably, been the setting for films such as the Tarzan films.

Apalachicola Barrier Islands

Apalachicola, an old town south west of the forest, is the state's oyster capital. The three marvellous Barrier Islands are across the bay.

One of these is St George Island - a 28 mile barrier island. It is still the least inhabited and is unspoilt, even though you can get there by road. Its miles of white sand beaches are uncrowded, great for swimming and catching a variety of fish. You can see many gracious wildlife like turtles.

Take a break from the beautiful seashore and visit one of the many restaurants serving fresh local seafood such as oysters of course.

Or go shopping on the Island for clothing, beach stuff, gifts and art.

Another of the Barrier Islands is Little St George Island. Perfect for those who like a measure of isolation. The island is about 75 miles from Tallahassee and is reached by bridge and causeway from US 98.

You can camp for free, but bring your own facilities. There is of course, the white sand beaches, bird watching (ospreys and eagles), wildlife (yes, and racoons) and last but definitely not least - fantaastic fishing.

The third of the Barrier Islands is the St Vincent Island. You can only get there by boat.

But is has many fresh water lakes and salt water swamps. It is a birdwatchers paradise. <bio>Tim Burton writes travel articles for the popular Orlando Villas Florida by Owner website at http://www.milkriver.co.uk and Worldwide Villas by Owner website at http://www.worldwidevillas.net Article may be reprinted but must include the all the author's bio </bio>

When buying snowboarding equipment the first item on most minds is the snowboard. So what are the basic 'need to knows' of the snowboard types?

Types of Snowboard:

There are three types of snowboard to consider: Freestyle, Freeride(all mountain) and Alpine (carving boards).

Freestyle Snowboards

These are wide, stable snowboards that are forgiving to ride. They are very responsive which makes them good equipment used for snowboarding for novices. The snowboard characteristics make them good for pulling tricks but less responsive in high speed carving due to flexibility and edge grip. They are often twin tipped and multi directional making them good for tricks and half pipes but ideal for beginners.

Freeride(all mountain)Snowboards

Generally the most popular snowboard on the slopes. Good for all mountain use, park or half pipe. Freeride snowboards tend to float reasonably well on powder, can carve and can be used to catch air, this make them popular boards. Freeride snowboards tend to be directional, meaning one end (the tip) is wider than the tail. They tend to be soft and manouveurable for beginners but offer enough stiffness for fast carves in harder snow, these boards offer a mix of characteristics between freestyle and alpine snowboards.

Alpine Snowboards

definitely not for the novice, these snowboards are stiff, narrow, long and built for speed. Built for speed carving and stability at speed with good edge holding powers they tend to be either symmetrical or asymmetrical but always built for one way travel.

Length and Width of Snowboard

Once you have chosen the type of snowboard that best suits your level of competence and ride style there are then several other factors to be considered in your choice of snowboard before buying.

Your height and foot size play an important part in your choice of snowboard.

The length of snowboard that will suit will be down to the riders height and ridestyle. Snowboards are usually 100cms to 180cms long.

A freestyle snowboard should stand tall enough to reach between the riders shoulders and chin when stood on end.

A freeride snowboard should reach between chin and eyebrows.

An alpine or carving snowboard should stand tall enough to reach a point between the forehead and a few inches above the head.

Foot size is important for determining the width of the snowboard. If your feet overhang the board there is a danger of catching an edge and tumbling. If your feet are too small then it is difficult to apply pressure to the edges to initiate turns. If you are an advanced rider using a carving board with big feet it may be necessary to alter your stance to avoid overhanging the edges.

Of course before you buy equipment used for snowboarding you should rent a few snowboards first to see what style, brand best suit you. <bio>John Rodgers writes for http://www.snowboarding-picture.com </bio>

There are miles of uncrowded beach on both the Caribbean and the Pacific coasts, the Monteverde Cloud Forest in the central highlands, and the cosmopolitan capital of San Jose. The country is ideal for adventure seekers. You can swing through the tree-top canopy in the rain forest, windsurf on Lake Arenel -- some of the best windsurfing in the world, enjoy fishing for swordfish and tuna, and hike the miles and miles of national park land. Costa Rica also specializes in self-sustaining resorts, a big plus for ecologically sensitive honeymooners.

2.Diving in Grand Cayman -- The Cayman Islands, just east of Cuba, offers some of the best diving in the world. Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, boasts dozens of dive sites as well as the pristine seven-mile beach and Stingray City, a unique stingray refuge where visitors can swim with 30 to 50 relatively tame stingrays. Accommodations on the island tend towards low-rise, mostly beachfront, condominiums. Nothing is too far away on this 22-mile long island.

3.Bicycling through Belize -- Belize, on the Caribbean coast, offers quiet hillside retreats, stunning Mayan ruins, and undiscovered beaches. You can canoe into remote Barton Cove, an ancient Mayan burial site; stay in Francis Ford Coppola's exclusive jungle hideaway; and peddle alongside waterfalls, beaches, and caves. It's like being in your own Indiana Jones movie.

4.Heli-climbing in the Rockies -- Experience the Canadian Rockies like few others have. A helicopter whisks you up to alpine meadows and inclines for a day or a half-day of hiking -- or you can choose one spot in the morning and another in the afternoon. This trip is not roughing it, however. When you're not exploring Canada's beautiful mountain slopes, you'll be staying at one of the legendary Canadian Pacific lodges, noted for their elegant rooms, spectacular views, and gracious service.

5.Hiking in the Alps -- Join a small group of like-minded adventurers for a trek through the foothills of the Swiss Alps. A typical week-long tour takes you through quaint mountain villages, to secluded mountain meadows, and up steep mountain passes. The average day's travel is about ten miles and in the evening you'll stay and dine in historic and friendly alpine inns.

6.Camping in Yosemite -- The 1189-square mile Yosemite National Park offers over 400 campsites, ranging from primitive to fully-equipped. Yosemite is one of the National Park System's most dramatic, and ranges in elevation from 2000 to over 13,000 feet. Visitors can enjoy the park's over 7000 species of plant life and over 250 varieties of animals. Activities include climbing, hiking the over 800 miles of trails, rafting, and horseback-riding <bio>Chris Morton ran hotels and restaurants for 17 years - catering for 100's of weddings.
Situated in Wake County, the town of Wake Forest serves as a suburb of Raleigh, which accommodates more than 20,000 people. Many might confuse this location as being the current home of Wake Forest University, but the former Wake Forest campus is now occupied by the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. While they situate their lives away from the hustle and bustle of highly populated locations, they are still close enough to enjoy the attractions and activities offered in the vicinity.
Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last week announced that the government would allow "sustainable" logging within 3% of the Amazon rain forest. The objective of the law is to reduce illegal logging while giving rural Brazilians employment. The plan is also aimed at generating revenue for forest management and protection.

Logging licenses will be restricted to private Brazilian companies, and by changing logging patterns, it is hoped that less damage will be done to the rain forest.

Current illegal logging practices, which account for most of the production, pay little heed to environmental regulations. A 2005 study found that "stealth logging" -- the selective logging of mature trees carried out under the protective canopy of the forest -- causes considerable damage to the forest.

In fact the study found that such selective logging is almost as harmful as if the forest was just cleared. Selectively logged areas are up to 8 times more likely to be settled and eventually cleared because of the access roads that are cut into the forest.

Logging itself is not thought to be the main cause of deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. That honor goes to agricultural expansion -- cattle ranching, soybean production and subsistence farming.

The Amazon area has lost more than 132,000 square kilometers of rainforest since the end of the 1990s.

The hope is that Brazilian firms will be able to operate profitably in the Amazon without damaging or diminishing the forest. Given the importance of the Amazon district to the ecology of the entire world, this is an experiment that all of us should hope will be successful.

**Brazil automakers sustained by exports

Although the Brazilian domestic market for new automobiles was down slightly in February, exports increased, keeping the overall level of vehicle production moving upwards. February production was up 3.3% over January and 3.9% over February of 2005.

Analysts had expected exports to decrease as the value of the Brazilian real strengthened. The real has gained almost 25% against the U.S. dollar since the beginning of 2005. But, in fact auto exports increased -- a sign that the Brazilian economy is stronger than expected.

Although domestic auto sales were down by 3.8% from January, this is an increase of 11.3% over February 2005.

Flex-fuel vehicles continued to be the biggest sellers, accounting for 93,000 or 76.6% of the total sales. Flex-fuel vehicles run on any combination of gasoline and ethanol.
Are you looking for a way to stay fit and have fun in the winter? Consider cross-country skiing! Depending on your weight, the intensity of your skiing, and whether or not you choose to ski hills, cross country skiing may burn between 400 and 1400 calories per hour. In fact, since cross-country skiing involves a simultaneous use of the arms and legs, many exercise physiologists consider it to be the best form of aerobic exercise. The main difference between cross country Skiing and alpine or downhill skiing is that cross country skiing, the skier is attached to the ski only with the toe of the boot.. In alpine skiing, the entire boot is attached to the ski. The free heel allows cross-country skiers to climb uphill which is not very comfortable in alpine skis.

Cross-country skiing dates back to Scandinavia 4000-4500 years ago, when it was used as a method of transportation. Today, the sport is divided into two disciplines: classic skiing which uses a straight-ahead gliding motion, and ski skating which makes use of glide and edge movements similar to ice skating or roller blading.

Cross-country skiing is part of the Nordic family of sports, which include a number of exciting ways to play in the snow. Biathlon is a combination of cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship. Nordic combined combines scoring of jumping and cross-country skiing events. Ski orienteering involves a marker search on skis with the help of a compass and map.

Compared to downhill skiing, the gear used for cross-country skiing is some of the most affordable outdoor sports equipment available. You will need the following types of equipment for cross-country skiing:

- Skis with bindings attached, - Poles and boots. - Clothing suitable for cold-weather aerobic activity

Some people choose to go cross-country skiing on packed trails, while others like to ski anywhere there is snow. There is a distinct difference between skiing on packed trails and skiing andquot;off-trackandquot;. On packed surfaces your skis will have greater gliding ability and with classic tracks, you will have two grooved channels that your skis can follow. Off-track ski conditions are dependent on the weather and any previous skiers that have been in the area. However, off-track skiing can feature obstacles such as fallen trees, swollen rivers and inconsistent snow quality. This is usually not an issue in commercial cross-country ski areas, who conduct extensive trail work throughout the summer months. <bio>Raquel S. Hunter is a writer for MamasHealth.com.
Rainforest deforestation impacts the planet, local and global economies. We're going to focus on the local changes, and work from there, up the chain of events and causality. The typical cycle is that rain forest lands get clear cut and used for crop lands, then cattle grazing lands when the crops fail, then abandoned (or used for housing if conveniently located), when even grazing lands fail. This is part of a vicious cycle =96 most of the nutrients in a rain forest biome are tied in the living organisms, not the soil itself. When they're clear cut, and burned, most of the resulting land is poor for agricultural use, low in phosphorus and nitrates, with soil that will blow away when the first wind storm hits. Soil exhaustion and salinization from over irrigation makes things even worse. This is, in many ways, analogous to strip-mining the soil, much as one would strip mine for copper or iron ore.

In an active and thriving rain forest, minerals and nutrients cycle quickly. When the rain forest is chopped down, those nutrients aren't there any more. They're shipped off as building materials or simply burned to clear the land. When grasses are seeded for cattle ranching, the soil is already starting depleted, and gets more so quickly. Eventually, the grass gets overgrazed, winds and rains come down and wash the soil into estuaries, and the process cycles even faster.

Erosion from deforestation is an attendant problem. The cover provided by the rain forest canopy keeps the tropical sunlight from baking the moisture out of the soils, and the aspiration of the plants helps capture rain clouds and seed clouds for rain. After the forest has been cleared, rainfall drops considerably. The tropical rain forest is a perfect example of a system where the combination of elements creates a whole greater than the sum of the parts.

There are several programs in place to try to preserve rain forests; the problems come from the fact that, in terms of local economics, it's hard to convince a farmer that clearing more land to raise more crops and make more money is a losing proposition compared to leaving the rain forest in place as a refuge for vermin and predators. Trying to preserve islands of rainforest land hasn't worked; the minimum area for viable rainforest biomes is around one hundred square miles, and most of the island experiments have been a tenth of that or less. Now, larger non governmental organizations are trying to buy up large tracts of rainforest land to keep as nature preserves, or to use as a basis for ecological tourism as a revenue stream to offset land use taxes, and the economic incentives for clear cutting.

Some efforts are being put in place to teach local farmers to work with the rain forest ecosystem rather than competing with it, using clearings in the rain forest for garden plots, and attempting to harvest the bounty of the rainforest directly. These have met a great deal of resistance because of the difficulties in balancing immediate short term profit with long term sustainability. <bio>Learn about Preservation of Endangered Rainforest Birds and Plant Species at http://www.paradiseearthonline.com </bio>

Forestry is one of the key industries in Northern Ontario. Northern Ontario's forest areas play an important role in providing livelihood to forestry communities all over the region. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources, about 90% of the forest area in Ontario is publicly owned. Since aboriginal times, Northern Ontario has been dependant on forests for its livelihood and so has its social, economic, and cultural development. The twentieth century saw the development of sawmills, paper and pulp, logging, and other such industries in Northern Ontario. Today, the forest product industry, tourism, fishing and hunting, lumbering, and transportation contribute to the livelihood of more than 90,000 people all across Northern Ontario.

The forests sector industries ensure that they indulge in effective forest management. Since the livelihood of the region depends on the forest areas, effective measures are taken to ensure that the natural resources are sustainable and able to provide for the entire forestry community. High standards in terms of environmental protection and reforestation are provided to the precious natural resources. Apart from communities in Northern Ontario that are dependant on the forestry industry for their bread and butter, there are also communities in Southern Ontario that exist on the basis of the forestry sector, making using of products such as timber, paper, lumber, and so on. Thus, the forestry industry and community in Northern Ontario is playing a significant role in the economy and standard of living of other regions in Ontario as well.

However, the forestry communities of Northern Ontario have their own share of problems too. Although Northern Ontario has been blessed with abundant natural resources, and even though these sources are being used to generate power, they have not managed to alleviate the costs of power itself. The astronomical pricing of power is causing a loss of jobs and affecting the livelihood of the forestry communities. The government must ensure that power is produced at a price so that its supply can be carried out at a reasonable cost. Lack of an organization or a committee to regulate the forestry industry produce and ensure that adequate reforestation takes place is also a big problem faced by the forestry community in northern Ontario.

The signing of the Ontario Forest Accord in 1999 has been a breakthrough in terms of advancement for the forestry community in Northern Ontario. An effort has thus been made by the government, the forestry communities, and the environmental community to understand each others problems and come up with effective solutions together. <bio>Explore the Greenstone region's rich heritage of fur, gold, and forestry at interpretive sites in various communities or experience a traditional Pow Wow and learn of the ancient ways of the First Nations people. http://www.greenstone.ca/ </bio>

They call this an eco-experience. But a Karkloof Canopy Tour on the Midlands Meander in KwaZulu Natal is more than that. This is adventure. This is adrenalin. This is like your first time on a red or a black ski slope. You're thinking, "This is too fast. This is too dangerous. I'm gonna die".

So what's the skinny? Using state of the art climbing and safety equipment, they suspend you on a pulley attached to a steel cable 30 metres above the Karkloof indigenous forest floor. And then it's "Goodnight Vienna".

What and where is the Karkloof Forest? The Karkloof Forest is in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands. It is pristine. And when you see the size of the trees, you'll know. They're old. It is also home to the Karkloof Blue butterfly, which inhabits a few hundred square metres of the forest. And it's found nowhere else in the world.

And Karkloof Canopy Tours? Well they're the psychopaths that make a living out of jumping your adrenalin level to the point where it's practically squirting out your ears.

Sure it's a big rush. But don't think these guys aren't serious about safety. The kit is "state of the art". The whole thing's been designed with the strictest civil engineering standards in mind. You begin with a safety briefing. Your harness and gear are checked and double-checked by the lead guide. And then you're off!

"Off" means you've managed to screw up your courage, closed your eyes, muttered a prayer, and leapt off the first of seven platforms -- high up in the trees. Catch your breath, calm your heart rate. You've got eight slides, the longest of which is 170 metres long as you whiz and zigzag, down the pristine indigenous Karkloof forest valley.

By the way, did I mention that they call this an "eco-experience"? You did notice the 20-metre waterfall you zoomed over, the river you screamed your way across, the beauty of the forest, the extremely rare bird-life, the Samago monkeys? You did notice these things, didn't you?

No?

Then you'd better go back and do it again tomorrow!

Karkloof Canopy Tours is a member of the Midlands Meander Association which regulates and markets the Midlands Meander -- the largest "arts and crafts ramble" in South Africa. It's not only "arts and crafts", as you've probably gathered. It's jam-packed with a variety of accommodation establishments and things to see and do. The symbol of Midlands Meander in KwaZulu Natal is the Karkloof Blue butterfly. Bear it in mind, the next time you're travelling to South Africa. <bio>Brian Kemp owns and runs http://www.hallscountryhouse.com a http://www.hallscountryhouse.com/Midlands-Meander.html establishment in the http://www.hallscountryhouse.com/drakensberg.html </bio>

What a great tool the internet is. It seems whatever childhood memory you may possess you can simply punch it in to Google and a huge number of references will appear before your very eyes in the fraction of a second. In this case it was the Grand Pier at Weston-Super-Mare.

Like it or not I am not as young as I used to be and was just thinking of all the happy times myself and generations of other kids had on the pier at Weston-Super-Mare which sadly was destroyed by fire this week. I can remember the joy of winning a pocket full of loose change on the "coin waterfall" machines only to lose it straight back again or worse still drop it and tearfully watch the coins disappear down the gaps in the wooden deck to be consumed by the mud below.

The journeys to and from Weston were always memorable too. On the way you would have all the euphoria of reaching your journey's end with the promise of candy floss and donkey rides and such like tinged with the anxiety of are we actually going to make it there? Back then it was only my Grandparents who had a car and my Grandad was a slave to his British cars. I recall he had a Morris Oxford which was a bit notorious for overheating and although we lived in Bristol which is about 20 miles from Weston you could pretty much guarantee we would only make it as far as the Clifton Suspension Bridge before clouds of steam would emanate from under the bonnet.

Anticipating this eventuality I would always carry my I-Spy books with me. I was right into cars so it would usually be I-Spy cars. I would sit there for hours happily car spotting. Upon sighting of a Chrysler Sunbeam my sister and I would annoyingly sing the advert theme tune "Put a Chrysler Sunbeam in your life" sung by Petula Clark which was being sang in playgrounds up and down the land.

Shortly after the demise of the Morris Oxford my Grandad bought a brand new Chrysler Alpine which was light years ahead of the Oxford which had it's origins in the sixties. The Alpine was cutting edge and ensured we had many trouble free trips to Weston and even beyond!

Chrysler had bought the troubled British car maker the Rootes Group and I discovered that our beloved Alpine was built at the Ryton car plant which was just down the road from where I now live until it's recent closure and subsequent demolition. Chrysler had bought a liability with the Rootes Group which although gave us many much loved vehicles was not sustainable and pretty much bankrupted Chrysler Europe who wisely off- loaded Rootes to PSA (Peugeot Citroen). My Grandad who was so pleased with his Alpine stayed loyal and went on to own a Solara which was actually a Talbot but he didn't mind!

Chrysler which has recently severed its ties with Daimler and put the financial worries of the past behind it now has a solid range of vehicles to choose from. The Dodge and Jeep brands are also incorporated under the Chrysler Group of companies.

There are a few crossover vehicles in the ranges such as the Dodge Nitro but the heritage of each brand has been maintained and the latest offerings from Chrysler are arousing significant interest. The new SRT designed 300c SRT-8 is an awesome beast of a car with a 6.1 litre V8 engine, definitely not for the feint hearted! The Voyager and Grand Voyager has staked a claim as being the most popular MPV on the market and when you drive one you can see why. Sales of the retro PT cruiser continue to be buoyant.

Chrysler has made its mark in automotive history and thanks to Petula Clark we will always remember the Sunbeam!<bio>Jon Barlow recalls Chrysler of yesteryear but your Chrysler Dealer should be able to hook you up with a modern alternative</bio>

Scientists at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology studying satellite date have found that only 1 to 2 percent of forest disturbance in the Peruvian Amazon occured in protected areas, which means that land-use and conservation policies have been successful. Protected areas are 18 times more effective at reducing deforestatio than unprotected areas.

Lead author Paulo Oliveira said, "We found that only 1 to 2 % of this disturbance in Peru happened in natural protected areas. However, there was substantial forest disturbance adjacent to areas set aside for legal logging operations. This leakage of human activity outside of logging concessions is a concern."

Peru's tropical forests are larger than France, which stretch 661,000 sq km and is second only to Brazil's forest area. The Peruvian government has been conscientiously putting aside large areas as parks and reserves while allocating around 40,000 sq miles of forest for long-term commercial timber production by 2005. With deforestation rates of less than 1%, Peru has comparatively lower rates when compared to its neighbors.

Scientists used the Carnegie Landsat Analysis System (CLAS), a "satellite-based forest-damage detection system" that penetrates the rainforest canopy to reveal the impact of logging. The CLAS system can uncover forest changes at a resolution of less than 100 by 100 ft.

GP Asner said, "Our approach has improved over the past eight years, but relies on a core set of methods that have consistently worked. We spent years developing them in Brazil, then went to Peru and completed this study in only a year. We are now operating over Borneo. Our approach is proving a good way to monitor rain forest disturbance and deforestation anywhere in the world."

Researchers found that Peru's forest disturbance and deforestation rates between 1999 to 2005 were only 0.2% a year, with an average of 244 sq miles and 249 miles a year. More than 85% of the damaged forests were in Madre de Dios and near Pucallpa. 75% of the damage was found within 20km of roads. Even within those limits, forests set aside by the government were more than 4 times better protected than areas not designated for conservation.

The authors said, "Overall, only 2% of the forest disturbances and 1% the deforestation detected in the entire study area occurred within the boundaries of natural protected areas. Furthermore, territories occupied by indigenous communities contained 11% and 9% of the total forest disturbance and deforestation, respectively. These results clearly show that these two forms of land-use allocation can provide effective protection against forest damage."

"The establishment of protected natural areas, the titling of native territories, and the sanctioning of selective logging activities, have combined with the Peruvian Amazon's traditional conservation allies--its remoteness and a complex hydrological network--to ensure a moderate level of success in the conservation of its forest ecosystems. Economic development of the forest sector, which employed 279,000 people nationally in 2001 (24), is essential for the well-being of human populations, but poorly monitored logging concessions, along with the challenges of uncontrolled road access, may hinder efforts to maintain ecological function and diversity in Peruvian rainforests in the future," the authors continued.

"Increased satellite monitoring of logging and other forest disturbances will thus be essential to conservation, management and resource policy development efforts in Peru and other rainforest nations," they concluded.

"This is another study from the Carnegie group showing the world how tropical forests can be systematically monitored amazingly quickly and at a reasonable cost." said Michael Wright of The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, which helped support the research. "I foresee that CLAS-like satellite analysis systems will become the standards routinely used by local conservation agencies to track rain forest disturbances and deforestation in the future."

The study was published in the on-line edition of Science Express this month.<bio>L.
Choosing the Location for your Christmas Tree Forest.

Most homes have a Foyer or Entryway just as you walk in the front door. This can be a fairly small space in a single level home or a much larger two storey room with a staircase. Foyers can be almost any shape from long and narrow, almost hallways to just about any size rectangular shape. The size and shape can be a little tricky and might require a little creative thinking but it is still the perfect place for any size Christmas Tree Forest.

The first thing to do is asses the space you have to work with. Some single storey homes have tall skinny windows on either one side of the door or on both sides. There is also usually a longish wall leading to the back of the Foyer. This would be the perfect place for your Tree Forest in this style of home. In a two storey home there is usually a wall that gradually rises with the staircase, so that the back part of the wall is taller than the front. A Tree Forest works very well in filling the empty space in the taller portion of that wall and is also a beautiful accent for stair rails.

Once you've chosen the spot you want to use you will need to take some measurements. You need to know how high your ceiling is, how much room you have along the wall you will use and how far out from the wall you can come.

Choosing your Christmas Trees.

The next thing to do is decide if you want to use live Christmas Trees. They can be purchased in different sizes and they add a very nice pine scent. The other option is Artificial Pine Christmas Trees. Artificial Trees are beautiful as well. They come in a wide variety of sizes and can be purchased with or without lights. Which ever you choose you will need at least 3 to 5 in different heights. For a smaller, single storey space you will need one 7 to 9 foot Slim Norway Pine Pre Lit Christmas Tree, depending on your ceiling height, one 4 to 6 foot Slim Norway Pine Pre Lit Christmas Tree and one 3 foot Table Top Artificial Christmas Tree. If you have a two storey Foyer then you could choose as many as 5 trees. I recommend using an uneven number of them and maybe choose two 7 to 9 foot trees, one 4 to 6 foot Artificial Christmas Trees and two 3 foot Small Artificial Christmas Trees. In either case you can fill the gaps between trees with smaller 2 foot Miniature Artificial Christmas Trees.

Decorating your Christmas Tree Forest.

Decorating the Trees can be kept very simple and easy by just adding a few Unique Ribbon Bows. You can use Red Velvet Ribbon or choose a theme such as Western or South West and use Red Bandana Ribbon for your bows. Carry your theme up your stair case and put a few bows on the Artificial Garland winding up the stair rails.<bio>Debby Brown has been a writer for Christmas Decorations and Gifts for several years.
Park rangers are nature lovers by nature. They enjoy being and working outside. Perhaps it is the fresh air that they enjoy so much. Or, it is the wide open space. It could also be the interaction with the park visitors or all of the above.

Whatever it is that drives someone to the park ranger profession, one thing is for sure, they must also enjoy wearing many hats. This is because park rangers get involved in so many things in the course of doing their job. In this article, I will discuss the many hats a park ranger could wear in discharging his or her duties.

In no particular order of importance, they are:

1. The park ranger could be called to wear the hat of a law enforcement officer. This will mean ticketing or arresting a park visitor.

You see, just as in anywhere else in life, the law can be broken in the park. For example, a park visitor can indulge in too much alcohol consumption in the cause of enjoying what the park has to offer. And we know what too much alcohol consumption can lead to. This person can become unruly or abusive to other park visitors.

In this case, it is the job of the park ranger to arrest or evict the person from the park. The failure of the park ranger to do this, could lead to dangerous situations. One of them could be somebody getting killed or seriously injured.

2. The park ranger could be called upon to control forest fire. Forest fire can be devastating. Families have lost their homes and valuables because of forest fire. Add to this the loss of wildlife. Then, you begin to understand why it is important to control forest fire.

Park rangers are one of the government agencies entrusted with controlling forest fire. They must watch park visitors to make sure they don't start fires that can rage out of hand. Something as simple as throwing a cigarette butt out can start a forest fire. While ordinary park visitors may not know this, park rangers know this too well. So they must educate and watch park visitors to keep this from happening.

3. The park ranger could be called to wear the hat of a search and rescue person. It is quite easy for park visitors to wander too far from other people. This is especially so for children. They can easily stray too far from their family and not be able to find their way back. In this case, the park ranger must help locate them before something harmful happens to them.

Another thing that also easily gets lost in the park is animals. Dogs and cats are perfect examples. One minute they could be with their owners, the next minute they could run too far into the woods. Here again, the ranger must come to the rescue.

The park ranger does indeed wear many hats. I have only scratched the surface. If you are interested in the park ranger career, I encourage you to do more research on what you will be doing on the job. This way, you will have no surprises after you get into the profession. You can do so by visiting websites which cover the park ranger career in more detail.

Note: You are free to reprint or republish this article.
The company is a manufacturer of the Ecoquest Air Purification system. This system claims to relieve breathing problems such as asthma and allergies and other breathing difficulties. The technology of this air filter is somewhat the same as any other air filter, but this one has a carbon filter and a ultra-violet light ionizer source.

The main advantage of the UV source, they claim, is that the UV is able to kill microorganisms and bacteria in the air. The ionizer then reduces the pollutants in your home by producing ozone. But there are some that claim that Ozone is a gas and is a major component in Smog.

Cell damage can be caused by Ozone in the nasal passages and lungs, and this can be a harmful threat to anyone that has a breathing disorder. Air purifiers are a benefit if they are what they claim they are. If, in fact, Ecoquest is making a product that does what they claim, then they should be able to sell them without any problem and you should be able to make some money doing this business.

They seem to be venturing in laundry purifiers and nutritional supplements now. Their nutrition products include sports nutrition and weight management. They also are involved in water purification systems.

Ecoquest seems to be disconnecting themselves from their predecessor, Alpine Industries. What some don't realize, Alpine is the parent company for Ecoquest. When the Federal Trade Commission found out about the claims, they told them to stop. Well, the company didn't stop all the way; they did post a warning label on the side of the purifier stating a new warning. But they didn't stop making the claims that it relives asthma and respiratory problems.

There were some litigation between the company and the FTC and the company was fined $1.49 million on the health claim charges. I guess it doesn't pay to sue the Federal Trade Commission when they have the upper hand.

So, needless to say, Ecoquest has not had the best reputation to work with. They have a network marketing system in place and have even tried to sell them door-to-door to get their name out as Ecoquest, and again distancing themselves from the Alpine Industry name.

In their business opportunity end of things, they provide you with the ability to do retail sales or you can help others build their business. They offer incentives such as travel dollars, company funded travel and expense program. They offer a luxury bonus car and annual profit sharing. Another incentive they have is trips to exotic places all over the world as a vacation for you. And they offer earnings from 6% to 42% on your group activity.

As with any other MLM business program, they all seem to be the same. If you work hard and stay committed, you will make some money. If you think just by signing up a few recruits will do it for you, then you will be disappointed. Check out the company and review them compensation plan. Is this a company that you can feel confident with and represent them in such a way that those around you will want to purchase their products?
