The next day, their joints and muscles lock up in pain. Then, they get discouraged, stop exercising for a while and give it up altogether. Workouts should start out smooth and easy. <br /><br /> Here is a warm-up routine to do 1 set of before every workout, but doing 3 sets of these alone can be a pretty good workout; particularly if you are a beginner. <br /><br /> LEG STRETCH  Lean over deeply on your left foot while your right leg is stretched out to your right side. Maintain balance.  Slowly, raise yourself with your left leg to a standing position.  As you stand, spread your <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/feet" rel="tag">feet</a> wide apart. Then press both palms in front of you while having their fingers pointing in different directions one set of fingers pointing to your left, the other set to your right. If your left fingers point to the right, your left hand should be under your right hand.  Push both palms against each other, the left palm pushing upwards, the right palm pushing downwards.  Exhale as you push, and inhale as you relax. Do this ten times. Then change the positions of your palms (left over right) and do the same procedures.  This exercises your forearms, arms, shoulders, and latissimus muscles (the muscles at the sides that give your body a V shape). <br /><br /> NECK PUSH  Gently move your head to your right side while your right hand gently pushes back against it. Do this once.  Gently move your head to your left side as your left hand gently pushes back against it. Do this once.  Gently move your head backwards as your left or right hand gently pushes back against it. Do this once.  Gently bow your head to the front as your right or left hand gently pushes against your forehead. Do this once.  This exercise strengthens your neck muscles. Never do neck rotations. <br /><br /> PUSH-UP  Do slow push-ups from 10 to 15 counts. Lean forward until your head and shoulders leave the floor, trying to touch your knees with both hands. Hold the position as you count to 10. Relax and repeat 5 times. Stand with hands on hips, feet slightly apart. Move your hand backward onto the small of your back. Keep your knees straight. Gently bend backwards at the waist as far as you can. Use a straight back kitchen or dining chair for this exercise. Stand behind the chair, holding the chair back with both hands. Lift one leg up and back, keeping its knee straight. Return it slowly to position, and lift the other leg up and back in the same way. Repeat 5 times with each leg. This exercise will strengthen hip muscles that support your back, as well as the back muscles themselves. <br /><br /> 5. Back and hip muscles. You may want a mat under you for this one. Lying face down on the floor, tighten the muscles in one leg and raise it from the floor. Hold the leg up while you count to ten, and then lower it slowly to the floor. Lift the other leg, count to 10, and lower it slowly to the floor. Repeat 5 times with each leg to give added strength to your back muscles and the hip muscles that support them. <br /><br /> CAUTION: Back Pain Exercise Demands Warm-up! <br /><br /> You've heard it before, but this word of caution is important. But how do we know if our dog is <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/overweight" rel="tag">overweight</a>? <br /><br /> A check-up with your veterinarian is always best, especially since he has your dogs records from his last exam and can compare weight as well as any other clinical indicators. However, you can perform a similar examination at home. <br /><br /> Start by running your hands down the dog's sides, over her <a href="http://www.artwoo.com/tag/rib+cage" rel="tag">rib cage</a>. If your dog is overweight, he will have no tuck, if he is too thin, the tuck will be extreme, along with a pronounced rib cage. <br /><br /> A good rule of thumb to follow is simply if your dog looks healthy and nourished he probably is. Before you begin a diet on an obese animal or trying to force feed a too thin animal, please consult your veterinarian for a check-up.
